Will.of.Oz (Unexpected Musical) — PattyCake Productions music video

For the third offering in their Unexpected Musicals series, the PattyCake guys got even more ambitious. Combining the club jams of the Black Eyed Peas with the spectacle of The Wizard of Oz required a bigger cast and more locations than their first two videos. Not to mention all the costumes, props, set pieces, and visual effects. But they pulled all of it off with their own unique flair.

Trivia:

According to PattyCake's Instagram teasers, it took 68 yards of fabric to make Glinda's voluminous gown, 2500 hand-stiched sequins to cover each pair of ruby slippers, and 57 pounds of actual tin to make the Tin Man's armor.

The Lullabye League is portrayed by Layne's step-daughters.

Jonathan Shane Ferrell isn't just one of the munchins. He's also one of the artists from Makeup & Creative Arts who provided the incredible character prosthetics.

PattyCake released their first public blooper reel for this project, and it is very fun.

The team at Makeup & Creative Arts released a time lapse prosthetics demo video for their Oz collection a couple years later with Dan Varnum donning the Lion's mane, Kathy Castellucci reprising her Wicked Witch role, Geoff Castellucci going gray silver as the Tin Man, & Paul Kaleka getting stuffed into the Scarecrow's burlap.

Rachel slipped back into Dorothy's gingham dress the following year to play Judy Garland in PattyCake's "La La Land" video.

Tony had performed "Let's Get It Started" many, many times during his decade as Dracula in the "Beetlejuice Graveyard Revue" at Universal Studios.

"Let's Get It Started" was also part of the opening medley for VoicePlay's second episode of The Sing-Off, though not the section the guys were featured in.

Layne had previously created a remix of "I Gotta Feeling" back in 2010 through his studio, Rayne's Room.

Can you connect the German city of Kiel to Diehard please? Thanks

Well the lazy way of doing this is the villain in Die Hard is Hans Gruber who was German and Kiel is in Germany. I could also be like: Oh Bruce Willis was born in Germany and yeah. But I love making things more convoluted than that...

So, we all know that Bruce Willis is in Die Hard, but an even more important role was his role as Tony Amato in one singular episode of Miami Vice, which we all know stars Don Johnson in it, who we all know was in Rian Johnson's movie Knives Out, which we all know. Ok I'll stop, even if this is just for you. You know actually I really wanted to connect this to Knives Out and then to 10 Things I Hate About You or 3rd Rock from the Sun because of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, but I have changed my mind, as it turns out Edward James Olmos is in the same Miami Vice episode as Don Johnson. Okay, so Edward James Olmos is Admiral Adama in Battlestar Galactica, which also stars Michael Hogan, from your favorite TV show ever, Teen Wolf. BUT, he is also in Skyrim as General Tullius. Skyrim also has Christopher Plummer as Arngeir, who was also in Knives Out. But that's not as fun as connecting to Charles Martinet, who was in the Mario movie despite not playing Mario but whatever. Now, as much as I love Charlie Day and want to connect through him, I feel the need to connect through Crisp Rat, but I'm resisting that cause I had a revelation. Charlie Day is in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, starring Danny DeVito, but Kim Whalen was in an episode of that show, and I love Starkid. Corey Dorris is also in Starkid and he was in an episode of Future Man, which has our icon, Josh Hutcherson, who was in Journey to the Centre of the Earth with Brendan Frasier, who was in the Mummy with Rachel Weisz, and she is married to Daniel Craig, bringing us BACK to Knives Out. Am I losing track of the mission?? NO!!!! So, Knives Out has many amazing cast members, but one of the more iconic ones, is Frank Oz. I just realized that my goal was to eventually bring my connection to the Lion King, and I can easily do that now cause Frank Oz is Yoda, but also that's lame cause I wanted to bring it to Matthew Broderick, but let it be known that we could just do Frank Oz to James Earl Jones at this point. So, Frank Oz was in Star Wars with Mark Hamill, who is in many, many things, such as Avatar, which features Dee Bradley Baker as Appa. He is also Perry the Platypus in Phineas and Ferb (for some reason my brain broke and almost wrote Despicable Me). Phineas and Ferb features Thomas Brodie-Sangster, which is always very funny to me, but it also has Ashley Tisdale, who was in the wonderful movie, 2009's Aliens in the Attic. Aliens in the Attic features many people, including Austin Butler, someone who was in the After movies, Tim Meadows, and Andy Richter, who played Mort in Madagascar. Ben Stiller is in Madagascar, who was in Night as the Museum, which has Rami Malek, who was in Bohemian Rhapsody with Joe Mazzello, who is in Jurassic Park (AND a movie called Star Kid). Jeff Goldblum is in Jurassic Park and also in Thor: Ragnarok, which also has Sam Neill in it, but unrelated to the goal at hand. Thor has Chris Hemsworth, who was in 2009's Star Trek, starring Chris Pine, who was in Wonder Woman with Robin Wright, who is in the Princess Bride with Cary Elwes, who was in Psych. Since they are not in the same episode, James Roday Rodriguez is in Psych, and so is Ally Sheedy, who was in War Games with Matthew Broderick.

To answer your question, yes, I came to the official conclusion that I really needed to get on track or this would literally last forever. Crazy how I can get myself to do this and not my homework. Ignore the fact that it took me over a month to respond to your question. Matthew Broderick is Simba in the Lion King, which also features Nathan Lane as Timon. Nathan Lane was in The Nutcracker: The Untold Story, which I know about solely because of Danny Gonzalez. Nathan Lane plays Albert Einstein in this movie, and so, within the lore of the movie, we could accurately state that because Albert Einstein exists within the movie, so does Max Planck, who knew Lise Meitner. I just wanted to say that cause I am aware as to how much you love her. But Max Planck was born in Kiel. Thank you and goodnight.

If I wanted to play this seriously, and not in my convoluted "6" Degrees of Michael Sheen way, probably could've connected Die Hard to Charlie Chaplin somehow, who met Albert Einstein but NO!!

Is ciel wearing Burberry during the murder arc?

Does our earl wear brands like Burberry?

Burberry was established in Basingstoke in 1856 (but has its HQ in London), so it was definitely around... even when Grandma P was watchdog. I find it interesting Burberry was established there because I once looked at Basingstoke as a potential area for Phantomhive Manor and its surrounding estate. Even tried to figure out whether St. Michael's Church in Basingstoke could be the reference for the parish church where Vincent and Rachel marry... and where Vicar Rathbone worked as reeve for Vincent -- because Rathbone even mentions St. Michael's Day -- but it doesn't seem to be. I still haven't definitively found the Phantomhive estate on a map of England, but the North Downs area is still promising....

I've also looked at Burberry for being the reference for Grelle's red trench coat, which I think might actually be true. (I think Abberline might be wearing an Aquascutum 🧥.)

But true Burberry has those single red lines, like our earl and the others have donned.

Yana-san is lucky to not get sued for it, since... as I mentioned in the linked post above, Burberry also has licensing in Asia, so the brand might be looking for knockoffs or other trademark infringements there. In the west, Target (among other stores) has been sued over the years by copying the signature check pattern, sometimes even with the single red line. Target is lucky that the lawsuit was dropped after talks. Idk why it was dropped, honestly. 🤔

Trouble mashup — VoicePlay music video

Mashups experienced a resurgence of popularity in the mid-2000s that lasted into the early 2010s, and the a cappella community was no exception. VoicePlay already had some in their concert setlists, but this is the first one they created a video for. They invited Rachel Potter, a buddy they'd met through the theme park performance circuit, to be their Taylor Swift stand-in, which turned out to be one of the best decisions they ever made.

My favorite bits:

the gradual layering to ease you in, spreading out the rhythm duties between all the guys

Rachel's fabulously disdainful expressions (and even more fabulous singing)

splitting the iconic "Trouble" chorus between Earl and Rachel, and using the megaphone to emulate the muffled effect from the original

the parallel harmonies from Earl, Eli, and Tony riffing up on ♫ "Me-ee-ee-ee-ee" ♫

Layne crushing the diction on Luda's "World" rap verse while making it sound more intimate and sincere than the original

the breakdown section, just the whole thing — funky rhythms, crunchy harmonies, bass notes in the basement, so good

Trivia:

This was the video that caught The Sing-Off producers' attention. After they saw it, they reached out to VoicePlay and encouraged them to submit an audition for the upcoming fourth season.

It also garnered a bit of national entertainment press, getting mentions in Playbill and Broadway World due to Rachel's involvement.

Even though she moved out of Florida, Rachel has remained one of VoicePlay's go-to collaborators, particularly for Disney and Broadway tunes. She has joined them for a dozen music video projects to date, as well as several live performances.

Making music is fun, but that doesn't mean the guys don't take it seriously. Layne clearly knew what he wanted the end product to sound like, and made sure he got what he needed.

Between rehearsals and filming several takes, doing all that body percussion left Geoff with some sore spots.

Hey Glass! I was just watching through some motn videos and realised that some are quite dull and lack chemistry... who do you think has the best chemistry/ makes the song more interesting. Also, I love you blog and could scroll through it for days!

Oh yes, I definitely agree that ‘Music of the Night’ can be quite boring once you’ve watched through, like, a dozen bootlegs of the scene. The song is nice, the blocking is iconic, but it can feel so rigid, and it’s difficult nowadays to find an actor who really makes it his own, or a Christine who functions as more than a living prop throughout it.

But there are some interesting ones! Here are a few recommendations (and when I say “interesting”, I mean they have to do more than sing it prettily):

Michael Crawford / any Christine except Dale Kristien - I can’t not include the OG Phantom! But I am also including him because he elevates the blocking, even if (or maybe because) he was the one to come up with it. With Crawford, every movement is languid, elegant, full of meaning. Most Christines he’s with are fine, there’s not a lot of difference in them, I just don’t recommend Kristien because her acting in that scene gives the Mirror Bride a run for her money.

Davis Gaines / Tracy Shayne - Gaines has an incredible voice, but like I said, I’m not picking people because they sing this song well. Like Crawford, Gaines is the definition of elegance, but in some ways he’s grander, in other ways more sensual, and he’s an expert at the light touch that leaves Christine (and you) wanting more. The one I recommend is his run on Broadway, where both his vocals and acting were at their peak (and where you can actually see him clearly).

Ethan Freeman / Jill Washington - Now for the complete opposite. Ethan Freeman is a socially deficient beetle of a man, and it is reflected in everything he does, particularly his hunched over, scuttling body language and movements. Watching his ‘Music of the Night’ is an exercise in not grabbing Christine and yelling, “Run away now!” His London run is preferred for the intensity of his performance.

Saulo Vasconcelos / Irasema Terrazas - The HANDS Phantom. Nothing else I really need to say; like another Phantom I’ll talk about in a bit, he excels in throwing in all these wonderful, unique details that makes his ‘Music of the Night’ a standout. Watch him in Mexico, where it seems he was given more freedom in the role.

John Owen-Jones / Rachel Barrell - I had to, or people would yell at me. I think JOJ’s ‘Music of the Night’ benefits more in the context of his whole performance. His version of this scene is exquisitely controlled; he is the master of his environment. It makes it all the more shocking when he descends into screaming rage in later scenes. But he does have excellent chemistry with Rachel Barrell, and his interpretation also provides a nice contrast to the next figure...

Earl Carpenter / Rachel Barrell - EARL. Probably the first man I think of when I think of “good ‘Music of the Night’“. Instead of control, he’s unsure; instead of power and commanding presence, he’s vulnerable, he desperately wants to be near Christine but is afraid of her reaction. Every time I watch him, I notice a new detail.

Flemming Enevold / Teresia Bokor - A fascinating Phantom, but one that you might not appreciate on first watch because he’s so subtle. It’s all in the hand movements - a change there, a little detail there - and in the inflections of his voice, where he’ll sing a note just a bit differently, or pause in an unexpected moment. The best way to say this is he kept me awake and interested in the song even though I was watching a blurry, wideshot video of him.

David Shannon / Gina Beck - Okay, most of this is Gina Beck, as David Shannon was unfortunately quite restrained in his performance. Beck is absolutely the opposite of a “living prop” in this scene, reactive, afraid at times then drawn in at others, constantly aware of the scene and hearing every word being said to her. You’ll be watching her more than the Phantom. Definitely see this scene with Shannon; her earlier video was at the very start of her run and she was nowhere near as good.

Jeremy Stolle / Samantha Hill - A Phantom who is restrained but it’s GOOD, another where it’s all in the tiny details. Stolle is utterly controlled in his body movements, holding himself back as if his life depends on it (which, being the Phantom, it probably did at some point), so he pours all his emotions into his singing, his walk, the tiny moments where he will let himself be close to Christine.

Tomas Ambt Kofod / Sibylle Glosted - Another fantastically detailed performance, and this time with an equally well-matched Christine. It’s hard to describe Kofod’s Phantom in this scene; he’s grand, dramatic, yet intensely focused and with a slightly manic edge. Glosted, meanwhile, is completely into the scene, unsure and just a bit shy but enthralled and loving the world he’s showing her. And Kofod’s freakout when Christine faints is amazing.

Greg’s development is displayed with as much poise as such a gauche character can be afforded, from seeming emotionally blank to succumbing to grief in Rachel’s room. Opposite Nick Offerman and other great talents in Me And Earl And The Dying Girl, Mann’s comedic delivery, both verbal and physical, is truly something to behold and never wanes.

8 Elliot Page – Juno (2007)

Juno is the blueprint for American Independent cinema, primarily for its Oscar-winning script and unconventional story of teen pregnancy. With a host of celebrated actors surrounding them, Elliot Page shines in what is arguably their most memorable and beloved role.

Miles Teller oozes charm in this role and makes it easy to understand how Sutter has made it through life without a thought for the future since everything comes easily to him at the moment.

Besides being the life of the party and effortlessly sweet, Sutter is a young alcoholic who, below the surface, realizes that he is sabotaging his future, and Teller does a marvelous job of exploring this side to the endearing protagonist. The serious self-deprecation that follows reuniting with his absent father, who is a vision of Sutter’s own future, is relayed masterfully and leaves the audience in awe of his performance.

4 Saoirse Ronan – Lady Bird (2017)

Star Saoirse Ronan had a number of stellar movies under her belt before Greta Gerwig’s Lady Bird, with her first Oscar nomination at the age of thirteen only the beginning of an illustrious career. Her range sets her apart from other young actresses in the game, spanning from sci-fi to period drama to raw, coming-of-age movies such as this.

The main character of this tale is anything but meek. Ronan is strong-willed and assured in the role and explores the everyday highs and lows of growing up while cultivating believable onscreen relationships in a way that can place any viewer right alongside her in Sacramento, which feels more like home the longer that you watch her senior year progressing.

3 Greta Gerwig – Frances Ha (2012)

A coming-of-age movie for people who are already of age, Frances Ha chronicles a woman’s journey into adulthood as, while she has technically grown up, it is clear that she’s “not a real person yet”. While most movies of the genre take place in high school, this one takes place in New York as Frances struggles to realize her dream as a dancer, maintain her relationships, and generally get by as a functioning adult.

2 Timothée Chalamet – Call Me By Your Name (2017)

In one of his best movies Call Me By Your Name, Timothée Chalamet stars as young Elio in a story of young love in 1980s Italy. He is both charming and bashful, causing the viewer to fall in love with him even faster than Oliver does, and he manages to convey so much heart and recognizable pain that the extent of his acting ability is never in question.

While Chalamet brilliantly inspires empathy for Elio’s confusion and inner turmoil throughout his relationship with Oliver, his final performance during the credits is a masterclass in understated yet powerful acting, as we watch the cycle of Elio’s heartbreak and are left reeling from his final, heart-rending glance directly into the camera.

1 Logan Lerman – The Perks Of Being A Wallflower (2012)

At only 20 years old, Logan Lerman delivers one of the most honest and moving portrayals of adolescence in modern-day cinema. For an actor who has had widely varying roles, such as a heroic demigod and a plucky rancher’s son, an introverted character like Charlie could have been difficult to embody, but Lerman does so with an awe-inspiring grace.

Lerman’s presentations of depression and trauma are never extravagant; his performance is highly effective using mostly subtle speech and action. He beautifully showcases Charlie’s innocence and love for his friends and keeps a powerful persona waiting behind a meek exterior to offer one of the greatest portrayals of a coming-of-age character that cinema has seen.

Review : Tiger (2021)

I’ve been lucky enough to be born in an era where a handful of athletes have been blessed enough to be some of the best to ever partake in their craft.  From Michael Jordan to Mike Tyson, Wayne Gretzky to Bo Jackson, Joe Montana to Tom Brady, Barry Bonds to Mark McGwire, Serena Williams and so on, some of the most iconic and gifted human individuals have emerged onto the scene, but only a small handful can compare to the sheer dominance, history and potential legacy of Tiger Woods.  As amazing as his accomplishments have been, however, he is certainly not free from controversy, and the HBOMax documentary Tiger attempts to put both sides of this complex individual into an understandable context.

Part one speaks on the rich friendship and unconditional love between Earl, Kultida and Tiger Woods.  Before he was a year old, Tiger Woods had already studied his father’s golf swing intensely enough to mimic it, and with the guiding hand of his father, Tiger Woods went on to blaze trails once considered unthinkable in the world of golf.  As a young Black man in a predominately White sport, Tiger burst onto the amateur scene with three straight wins over three years before turning pro in 1996.  With a multimillion dollar advertising deal with Nike in place, Tiger went on to decimate his competition for years, including winning all four major tournaments in a single year.  With his name firmly placed amongst the legends, Tiger stepped into adulthood poised to be the undisputed darling of the sports world, but as with all great rises, a fall seemed inevitable.  The death of his father made a massive impact on Tiger’s life, and moving forward, things would never be the same.

Part two focuses on the intense scrutiny surrounding Tiger Woods and his extremely private life he kept from the public eye.  As an iconic athlete, pitchman with massive crossover appeal and barrier breaking icon, it was important to him that public perception was positive.  On the surface, his career and marriage to Elin Nordegren seemed like a picture perfect image of the American dream, but as many stories of fame have taught us, even the brightest stars often have dark secrets.  Outside of his loving marriage with his wife and newborn child, the tabloid papers uncovered Tiger’s infidelity streak, Tiger sought personal validation with his newly formed group of military comrades, and the sport that once drove his entire world suddenly began to take a backseat.  With his personal life choices taking a physical toll on his body, his golf game begins to suffer, but with 19 major tournament wins in sight (one more than the legendary Jack Nicklaus), his drive is more fierce than ever.  It seemed as if Tiger Woods’ life had reached a momentum that could not be stopped, but the introduction of Rachel Uchitel sent it down a path that eventually ended in self-destruction.

For a documentary that does not contain any direct interviews with the subject, Tiger is surprisingly insightful, honest and fair in the way it approaches Woods.  His accomplishments are given proper praise and examination, both in terms of the skill it took to achieve them and the context of him as a Black man making the achievements, which makes his incredibly unique story that much more of a Herculean undertaking.  I’m just a hair under five years younger than Tiger Woods, so I remember much of his journey in real time, but the access provided to his life pre-fame is intriguing and telling... his relationship with his father is the dominant element present, but some of the home video footage provided from longtime friend and former confidant Dina Gravell gives us a glimpse at the young kid that existed behind the dominant golf machine we were presented as a viewing public.  It also could have been very easy to go knives out when the story shifts to Tiger’s shortcomings and infidelity, but surprisingly, these topics are handled with as much delicacy as there is honesty, which gives us an equal parts unflinching and unconditional look at an individual with so much weight piled on their shoulders at such a young age that the impact of his compartmentalization as a coping mechanism would not be understandable until decades later.

It is this compartmentalization that stands out as the most intriguing learned aspect from the documentary.  We are told by individuals from all walks of Tiger’s life about his uncanny ability to channel his focus in an almost zen-like manner, so it makes sense that his infidelity, obligations as a public figure and duties as a husband could be compartmentalized in a similar manner.  Those who attacked his character often treated Tiger as if he should be of flawless character and without error, but just like most every other iconic individual robbed of a childhood, the character cracks seem much more drastic than those of the average individual.  On the one hand, it is hard to fathom how one man can portray himself as a top athlete with endless ambition, a loving family man, and a role model for a vast majority of the populous, but once one considers how an individual’s life experiences help guide us through future pitfalls, and we consider the fact that Tiger’s life was overwhelmingly centered around golf well before he was able to form a character, then his downfall is much less surprising and much easier to understand.

Unlike the Michael Jackson documentary, which seemed squarely aimed at destroying that monumental legacy created by the icon of icons, Tiger plays like a confession in hopes of character redemption.  It doesn’t take more than a cursory look to understand that even the people giving damning accounts of Tiger’s actions (or the actions that shaped him during his youth) are extremely protective of him, and despite how they may feel about him as an individual, their love for him shines through.  If anything, the Tiger Woods story can serve as a reminder that no matter how incredible an individual may seem, we must understand that nobody is perfect, and we must be willing to allow those who fall down to pick themselves up without us damning them to a life of shame.

HBO has always been strong in terms of documentary production, and Tiger continues this trend of compelling character studies and stories too unbelievable to be forgotten.  Hopefully, when all is said and done, Tiger’s accomplishments can be taken on their own merit, and his life can be accepted as having the same ups and downs all of us experience.
