Taken on 2021 1st & 2nd February during my time with @americanconservationexperience, I was find striped rabdotus snails (Rabdotus alternatus) remaining inactive until night staying on the walls of our lodging at Laguna Atascosa. You could see the varied shell patterns of individual snails. #animal #animals #wildlife #texasnature #texaswildlife #txwildlife #txnature #nature #invertebrate #invertebrates #fauna #snail #snails #texassnails #snailshell #snailshells #landsnail #landsnails #gastropod #gastropods #mollusk #mollusks #animalia #mollusca #gastropoda #stylommatophora #bulimulidae #rabdotus #rabdotusalternatus #stripedrabdotus (at Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge) https://www.instagram.com/p/CYKP5MfvIul/?utm_medium=tumblr

Meet Tippy the prairie rabdotus snail! They came with their two friends who don't have names yet. These three are very adventurous and very big eaters! I think we're gonna get along just fine :)

Striped Rabdotus | 漏Seth Patterson聽 聽聽(Rio Grande Valley, upper delta, Texas, US)
Striped Rabdotus land snails, Rabdotus alternatus (Stylommatophora - Bulimulidae), climb trees and other objects to escape heat radiating from the ground during hot summer days. During periods of drought they can form a hard, moisture-retaining membrane of dried mucus, called an epiphragm, and enter a suspended state known as estivation. Once the rains return, the snails seem to magically spring to life.
Rabdotus alternatus is a species native to the United States (Texas).
