The Origins of Rød

My husband has run an RPG group on Monday nights for the last few years, but because I'm always at work I've never been able to join them. This week, however, I was at orientation in the morning and could join their first session of a new campaign (it also happened to be his birthday). We thought it would be fun if I made a quick, disposable character with no real backstory so I could sit in on the session and heroically die near the end to give the adventurers a fallen companion to think of fondly through their future triumphs.

In true TTRPG fashion, however, things did not go as we planned and instead the group tried everything in their power to work against me and keep my character from dying, creating a new recurring temporary squadmate.

Meet Rød, the Infernal Tiefling Fighter. Rød is incredibly attractive, but not very smart. A long time ago, Rød was married. Things weren't going well, but because Rød was terrified of both his warlock wife and her Undying patron (and, again, not very smart) he tried to fake his death to get out of the marriage. The patron then cursed him with the inability to die, no matter how hard he tries, and blessed his ex-wife with demonhood.

So now I'm in the group, but only on Mondays when the school is closed. Rød will continue to try to die every session I play, and at the end of those sessions (or if I'm ever on the brink of failing the death saves), he will mysteriously be sucked into the Hells to return the next time I can make a session.

10. Possessive Pronouns

Hello all! Today we're looking at possessive pronouns. We get a little grammar heavy here, but I'm sure you'll pick it up. You may notice that most have different forms... yep, they correspond to gender! More on that in a minute.

min (m/f) mi (f) mitt (n) mine (pl) - my/mine

din (m/f) di (f) ditt (n) dine (pl) - your/yours (sing)

sin (m/f) si (f) sitt (n) sine (pl) - his/her/hers/their/theirs (one's own)

hans - his (another person's)

hennes - her, hers (another person's)

hens - their, theirs (another person's)

vår (m/f) vårt (n) våre (pl) - our/ours

deres - your/yours (pl), their/theirs (plural, another person's)

Grammar

Possessive pronouns can come either before or after the noun. When placing it after the noun, you need to use the definite form. Both of these sentences are correct ways to say "my car is red":

Bilen min er rød.

Min bil er rød.

The first one is a more common and neutral structure. The second puts emphasis on the pronoun. Say someone asked you: "is this your car?" And the car is blue, you might say, "nei, min bil er rød" (no, my car is red).

For feminine nouns, you can use either the masculine form or the feminine form, but you can't mix and match:

You can also use possessive pronouns on their own to mean mine/yours/ours/theirs:

Den grønne bilen er min (The green car is mine)

Er denne boka din? (Is this book yours?)

Det svarte huset er vårt (The black house is ours)

Dette er deres (This is yours/theirs)

Sin/si/sitt/sine or hans/hennes/hens/deres?

Both sin/si/sitt/sine and hans/hennes/hens/deres refer to third person. Sin/sitt/sine refer to the subjects own object, while hans/hennes/hens/deres refer to someone elses. Take a look at these sentences:

Ingrid liker søstera si.

Ingrid liker søstera hennes.

Both these sentences can be translated as "Ingrid likes her sister". But in the first sentence, we're talking about Ingrid's own sister. In the second, we're talking about another girl or woman's sister.

Cobalt revolution shit:

Takes place six years after "The End", so this year since "The End" came out in 2016

"Red" and her group were 16-18 when it happened

The red army has taken bits of England (with American factions popping up at some point)

Tom, Edd and Matt lead the main revolution (British sect) while "Red", Greenie (Red's girlfriend), Daniel and Brian (Red's cousin) lead the American sect even though they're only 22-24 (until they move to the English sect to help Tom and Co. after the American sect of the red army is crushed)

"Rouge" is probably the youngest member of the red army at 23

The cobalt resistance (both sects) were basically forced to live underground because of how bad the red army's rule is

"Red" is the same type of monster Tom is (whatever that may be) but they're not related

Red helped make any and all technology the resistance needs (she used Tord's inventions against him, kinda like how Michael is doing the same in "The Phantom Files" to take down his father)

The reason "Red" and "Rouge" have basically the same codename is because they're basically the same, just on different sides

The two of them have a similar relationship to Tord and Tom

Both sides have made propaganda posters

(This whole au is going to be a modern and smaller scale cold war isn't it?)

The cobalt resistance has soup kitchens, clothes drives and more services available for those who need it

Their base is basically a really nice and clean sewer system (meaning they picked an old system that isn't used anymore, cleaned it out, completely renovated it and now it's their base)

"Red" already knew Tom, Edd and Matt before Tord came back and even stayed over (Brian has family in England and it was summer break so the group visited them, met the trio and were eventually able to move in next to them after the American sect of the red army was crushed)

Edd came up with a solution to Tom's eye cancer (the visor) and "Red" built it in return for him taking her and her group in

(I just looked up Tomska's age and it turns out he's 31, so that's how old C!Tom is in the main part of the au)

(I should just refer to "Red" and "Rouge" as their actual names)

Speaking of, they picked each other's nicknames (mocking how much red they were wearing at the time) when they were itty bitty kids (like 5 or 6)

The two of them adopted them as their names for a while to lessen the impact of the insult

If Ruslana/"Red" wanted to be accurate, she would've called Romana/"Rouge" rød which is Norwegian for red (yes Romana is Norwegian, no Ruslana didn't know, she thought she was French at the time)

I don't know when and how Romana joined the red army, or how she even heard of them to begin with (I do know the why, she wanted to spite Ruslana, that's it, that's the reason)

The female versions of the eddsworld crew are their male counterparts' twin sisters (again, this is my au)

Tom sees "Red" as his little sister/friend who he has no trouble mocking/insulting (this is mutual btw, it goes both ways)

Their relationship is similar to that of Tim and Kate

Tom drinks to keep the demon/monster from showing itself (I guess that's the term I'm using) because I think IRL Tom said that it's a rage monster of some kind (It shows up when C!Tom is angry or stressed)

I saw a video that mentioned it (the post IRL Tom made) as well as a blueprint on the wall of Tord's room that seems to be for the rage monster

The video said that Tord was (maybe) trying to replicate the monster for his own use

(Is that why Tord was constantly trying to make him mad in "The End"?)

Fuck it, my au my rules (it's canon)

There are suppressants (medication) for those who have to deal with it (like Tom, Tamara and "Red")

Ok but Tom finding out about Tord wanting to replicate the monster though (he found a blueprint, similar to the one I mentioned earlier, in his base after a riot gone wrong)

(I think that Tom would've gotten harsh treatment because of it, maybe in school or by strangers, the bowling ball mom and pineapple dad thing doesn't help either)

Edd was probably the only one that really got to know Tom and saw him as a person instead of this monster (Matt does later after Edd introduce them to each other)

Tord has said some shit but other than that he didn't really care (on the surface, he didn't want his plan to be known, why would he?)

Matt and Edd did (and still do) have questions about the monster but any conversation about it was shut down (they want to make sure he's ok both physically and emotionally but Tom doesn't want to talk about it)

The species (?) name is Khokinae (the word "Kalu" could be considered a slur)

Edd still draws but it's become more of a coping mechanism

Matt "mourns" his past self, mostly his looks, and keeps old pictures at the base (no mirrors though, he can't stand to look at his present self)

Jon still hangs around and even joined the resistance (even though he can't do much, because dead)

He's mostly emotional support

Tom could have self-esteem and body issues because of the monster thing

He probably feels like he's a bad person because of it too

(He does hide his feelings and pretends not to care)

Tamara and Norman are the only ones that see his emotional outbursts (and he wants to keep it that way)

The resistance doesn't have uniforms (they associate uniforms with the red army, red army = bad, so uniforms = bad by association)

They do have a flag, blue background with checkered circle (think of WTFuture!Tom's sleeves but with a darker blue)

They wanted a name too so they took the resistance leader's (Tom) sleeve color and picked a different shade (they landed on cobalt so, cobalt resistance/revolution)

"Red" is basically the techie, strategist, weaponry and backup leader (she led her own revolution back in America so, they kinda had to give her these roles)

She does her job well, with style and in a timely manner

(And yes the resistance still has harpoons, you can't separate Tom and his beloved harpoons/harpoon gun)

For my German novel translation, I had to look up “purpurnen” (that’s an inflected form).  When I discovered it means “crimson,” I remembered that in looking up some foreign words recently, I happened to see crimson and some word that was something like purpurn.  I’d forgotten what language though, so I had to look up some things.  [Blah blah blah boring exposition...]  Then I discovered that the French word pourpre means both crimson and purple!

Anyway, I lookt up the Norwegian word for crimson and discovered that it’s høyrød.  I knew rød was the word for red, so I lookt up høy.  It means tall, high, or loud (as an adjective, at least; as a noun, it’s hay).  So in Norwegian, crimson is “loud red.”
