I saw your post and got super worried because I assumed it was the artist I've loved since they started here on tumblr. So, I went on the dreaded 🐦 app and low & behold, stan culture ruins things once again! Kinda glad I wasn't around during the heyday of GOT because it must've been absolutely insufferable! 😖😖😖
Fandom during GOT's prime must have been insane already, but I do think it's gotten worse in recent years. There used to be the unspoken rule of "if you've got nothing nice to say don't say anything at all" that appears to have completely vanished from fandom spaces. Cuz if I see a post with an opinion I don't like/agree with, or fanart of a character I don't care for, or fic of a ship that I dislike, I'm not gonna leap down OP's throat about it. I'm just gonna scroll, maybe vague post about it on another app (I've vague posted about some dumb Twitter opinions on here on occasion), and then move on. But this idea that, if someone doesn't like the same things you like, they're not only morally reprehensible but personally committing some kind of wrong against you specifically is insane. It's more than that trend I've mentioned about trying to equate fandom with morality, it is, as I said in the tags of that post, something that reeks of insecurity. There's a bunch of people in varying fandom spaces that feel that their own opinions simply must be validated, because their opinions are correct, but it's not enough for them to think it, other people need to think it too.
And it's an issue that has dominated Team Black in HOTD specifically. Cuz I'm not seeing it from Rhaenicents, from Greens, even from show casuals. It's diehard Team Black and primarily TB book purists at that who find Rhaenicent fanart (especially ones that take Emma D'Arcy's actual appearance into account), or Team Green posts, or even regular posts expressing any sort of appreciation for Team Green actors or sympathy for some of the characters (especially Alicent or Helaena) and just lose their minds. Insult the poster or the artist, deride actor's appearances, weaponize actual political language to support their point despite no real tangible thread of connection ('killing Lucerys is basically femicide' omegas aren't a real thing and killing that boring ass boy is not, in fact, femicide, there are actual femicides happening in the real world right now, focus on those), and get hopping mad at the fact that these varied posts exist. It's greed to an almost biblical proportion tbf, it's not enough that most show casuals agree with their opinions, that most people with both book and show knowledge are on their side, that the narrative of the show supports their views (in the Jaehaera art thing specifically, that canon dictates she's gonna die and that Daenaera and Aegon are gonna be married and have a reasonably happy married life). Everyone needs to be on their side, nobody had better dare have opposing views to their's. And if those opposing views exist, well then those people have earned all the nastiness that's gonna get thrown their way for having those opposing views.
Like, you're that insecure? You need everyone to agree with you in order to hold fandom opinions? You can't just like something for your own reasons and ignore people who don't agree? Other people, people who don't even know you exist, hold that much power over you? Team Black, are you guys really so pathetically weak?
Anyway, fuck people who tag butch Rhaenicent art with snippy "Daemicent!!!" quote tweets, fuck people running TG fanartists off of social media because you can't handle drawings, fuck people going up to actors and saying vile shit to them based on their characters, fuck everyone who tries to be an asshole about Olivia's looks or TGC's looks or Phia's looks, and fuck stan culture. Everyone's who's so deranged about their fictional opinions that they act nasty to real human beings should simply find the nearest noose and hang themselves by the neck until dead, the world will be an infinitely better place and no one will miss them.

as a person on team green twt that surrounds herself with alys rivers enjoyers/alysmond shippers, i don't think they were the first to start things, though at the same time i don't believe them to be blameless. there were countless times when a completely unrelated alysmond tweet started getting traction and all of a sudden its author was under fire with helaemond shippers on the front lines. to this day no tweet about alys, even outside of romantic context - for example just talking about the potential of her character, can avoid gathering at least several negative and private quote retweets either from other shippers, team black stans or even jealous aemond fans.
im guessing because of that they're super defensive over her character and resolve to putting their anger and frustration onto the first visible target. which is probably the same reason behind always mentioning alys' status as aemond's canon lover. and as much as i can't stomach helaemond (while at the same time honestly believe it to be a better alternative to l*cemond, at least in this instance people aren't using the likeness of a real life minor in nsfw content) i do agree that everyone has the right to ship what they want if they're not harming anybody along the line. ig all i want to say is that bad apples exist on both sides of the conflict. ive found out that its better to just curate the content you want to engage with, ignore the rest and under any circumstances not bother oneself with snarky quote retweets.
no, i still think they were the first to start things. a lot of us didn't even know who alys was before she and alysmond were shoved into our faces asking "but why don't you like her and this ship? why are you incest freak shipper? ew gross" when we didn't even know who she was.
i've personally closed my eyes to my own moots tweeting really insulting stuff about helaemond shippers only to later, some of them, to start suddenly ship helaegon. funny that, lol
also the "alys come on screen, they are shipping your man with his sister" that were obviously started by alys and alysmond stans.
also between the two of us, most tweets i've seen are alys in the context of her relationship with aemond and very little stuff about her as a character so yeah
and believe me, all the hate you see now, started way back. hotd barely finished when i saw the first anti helaemond tweet and i was like "who's this girl?"
i'm sorry but this was one of the most unpleasant experiences within the hotd fandom outside of team black stan bs so i'm really not very welcoming of it. it has left a very bitter taste in my mouth and it's a side of green twitter and green fandom that i dislike
the names i've been called, the way alys and alysmond shippers interacted with helaemond shippers who make fanart, the way i've had multiple people come into my mentions uninvited to argue on behalf of it, even trying to pose like they're not fans only to later admit it and resort to namecalling.
just last week someone said "don't share the movie where ewan is a r*pist without proper warning, but what can i expect from a helaemond shipper?" implying somehow that we're all really morally bad people
and as evidence about how i argue about every other topic on my blog, i'm not likely to let go of my resentment because it's been a bad experience and i am resentful of it.
as a last note, it's a bit backhanded to say the only thing that makes helaemond better than lucemond is because it's not ped*philia.

People in this fandom literally going through F&B and trying to whitewash everything Alicent has done and said in the books just because HOTD is currently writing her as sympathetic and as whitewashed as possible.  This tweet was in response to someone pointing out that Alicent’s comments about pregnancy and childbirth being easy for her to Rhaenyra were insensitive considering what happened to Aemma, but not ill intended.  And I agree with this.  Alicent was trying to reassure Rhaenyra and realized her mistake right away as you can tell on her face.  However, this thread went on and started predicting that pretty much everything F&B said about Alicent wasn’t true and basically she was villified, which is fucking ridiculous.
Yes, F&B is written like a history book, with multiple sources with their own biases, however you have to lay it into context, just like with real historical sources, and not think that everything that is written is wrong.  First we have to look at the sources of this information, which is Grand Maester Runciter, Septon Eustace, and Mushroom.  Mushroom notoriously sides with the Blacks, while Septon Eustace, who is considered the more accurate source, sides with the Greens.  Then we have to look at who is writing this history book, Grand Maester Gyldayn during the reign of Robert Baratheon, a king who has a notorious hatred of Targaryen’s.  And who else has issues with the Targaryen’s from the beginning?  The Faith and the Citadel which both reside in Oldtown where the Hightowers rule.  F&B is obviously written with most of the bias being towards the Greens, as in they clearly favor the Greens.
Now I’m not saying that things were taken out of context or that Alicent and Rhaenyra both were unfairly villified just because they were women, it’s obvious this was the case due to how almost all of the women were portrayed in F&B, but you can’t justify some of the things Alicent does and says in this book, including the quote above.  How in the hell could that quote be taken in any other kind of context than what is presented, which is obviously full of maliciousness?  How could that quote be whitewashed in any fucking way?  Alicent is the one who constantly calls Rhaenyra a “whore” and calls Rhaenyra’s children “bastards” and says that she hopes “the whore” Rhaenyra dies in childbirth when Viserys dies.  Alicent let Viserys’ body rot for days while she planned to usurp the chosen heir to the throne.  Anyone thinking that Alicent is this pure saint that she was entirely, unfairly attacked and that she’s an amazingly kind and compassionate queen who is a political mastermind has another thing coming.  Is Alicent evil?  No.  Is she a horrible person at times?  Yes.  Is she a gray character?  Absolutely!  Was she obviously a pawn at the beginning of F&B and a victim of the patriarchy?  No doubt.  But being a victim of the patriarchy does not give someone a free pass and does not whitewash a person from the stuff they say, do, and participate in.  And the fact that Alicent, as a woman, condemned Rhaenyra for making her own choices as a woman, and enforced the patriarchy, is no doubt insidious in its own way.  Alicent isn’t perfect, and while she’s being whitewashed in the show so far to make her more sympathetic, I highly doubt this is going to remain true for much longer.  So I look forward to all the Alicent Stans scrambling to try to explain and excuse her upcoming gross behavior and mediocre parenting skills.

Hey, I just want to say I LOVE UR NETTLES ART. You’re so talented.
I can’t begin to describe the happiness I felt when I saw how beautiful and accurately you drew nettles. The HOTD fandom is so racist they’re always lightening her or drawing her to look grotesque.
Like I saw one tweet that stated I quote “Daemon would never cheat on Rhaenyra with a low born ugly black girl”. I was so pissed. They don’t even bother to hide her racism
Anyways, ignore what the haters say and keep doing what ur doin. Your one the only pro nettles accounts I’ve stumbled upon on the internet.
Ps: I look forward to more nettles individual art and possibly some for Baela and Rhaena:)
_______________________________________________
Aaaaah thanks <3333. I know the feeling well, spent years having zero Netty content until I learned how to do my own lol. I’m glad I can provide for others lmao.
You know, I love me some ugly girls who are allowed to be ugly and I straight up don’t mind at all if Nettles is indeed ugly, but I feel like in her case there’s more of misogyny/racism against her from the maester’s perspective than her being actually ugly in canon. Still, I think it’s important to keep her traits (scar; crooked teeth etc) cause none of those should be in any way demeaning of her worth.
But yeah, people saying Daemon wouldn’t go for her are simply just straight up racist. I did have a daemyra shipper actually saying that with all the words (“if he leaves R for her, it’s only for the sake of representation, because it’s not realistic to have him leaving R for a black woman”). When I say they aren’t even hiding anymore, I’m not joking. Twitter is a cesspool when it comes to Nettles, and I predict it will become worse, so I’m here in the trenches already.
I have no plans of stopping posting about her, I hope the show makes her as cool as she has the potential to be.
Ps: I’m gonna take notes on your Baela/Rhaena request, I might do my own interpretation of them mixing show and book elements ♥️
