9 - interactions with their best friend

Absolute ease and comfort. The kind of friendship where you can anticipate their reactions and feelings and share glances at just the right moment, then struggle to stave off laughter together. With people he considers best friends, Mahon is very hands-on - he likes grabbing them for hugs, grabbing them to emphasize a point, holding an arm to show he’s listening, holding the back of their head when they’re standing close by with nothing else to do.

Lots of innuendo. And inside jokes no one else would find funny. And dares. And replacing any instance of using the word “hello” with a massive, crushing bearhug that lifts someone off the ground. He’s here to spread love!!!

Inquisitor Viera

Viera means the path of a story or dream, which feels inevitable as she sort of got sucked into her destiny against her will.

When she was a baby, her mother, an City Elf prostitute, was fleeing an Alienage in the Free Marches joined up with Clan Lavellan after hearing word that they were not far from the city she was working in. Her mother never explained why she left but once she became a Lavellan, she kept the identity very close to her heart and her infant child was even given a more traditional elven name.

Having been the child of a city elf, she wasn’t so much discriminated against as passed over for many opportunities. She ended up working as a cook for the clan and grew up otherwise happily in the forests and plains that they made their home in. She was especially fond of the Halla and spent much of her free time with them, when there was time that was free. In her most private moments she’d freely admit that she would prefer Halla to people.

She’s a happy go lucky sort of person, she’s cheeky, liked to goof off as a child  and even as an adult. It was very rare that anybody took her terribly seriously. As a Dalish elf she is very protective of that identity however and regardless of how true or not her religion may be, she knows that this is the incarnation of her religion and way of life that saved her from an existence in poverty in an Alienage.

Eventually she fell for a hunter, Halen, and they were married and had a child, Fenora. They were married very young and Halen had a very hot headed nature, which lead to his death shortly Fenora’s birth while attempting to defend the camp against human bandits. The loss took a great toll on herself and thus, when it came time to select a spy for the meeting at the Temple of Sacred Ashes, she happily volunteered. Fenora was a young girl at the time but begged her mother not to go. But Fenora was left in the care of her grandmother and Viera left.

And that’s where DA: I begins.

In terms of combat skills she hit the ground running, the most comfortable thing she knows how to hold is a knife and ends up wielding daggers as a result. She then specializes as a Tempest later on and wears elven a combination of the three armors that elves can have in the game, pieced together to make something functional that she can wear and fight in with ease.

As for her choices throughout Inquisition, in general she denies the possibility that she was chosen by Andraste herself, the title of Herald makes her absurdly uncomfortable for multiple reasons, primarily that she doesn’t really believe in Andraste or the Maker. She’s comfortable with mages having grown up with them in her clan and sides with the mages, she can’t imagine being trapped in a tower her entire life and knows that her mother was essentially trapped in an Alienage for her whole life, she never would push that life upon another.

Politics really aren’t a strong suit of the Inquisitor, she kills Florianne and reunites Briala and Celene though she doesn’t truly understand the implication and frankly was blinded by the fact that if she could be reunited with Halen she would want to be. She also supported Leliana for the Divine after having become very close to her throughout her time in Haven. If anybody could reconcile the people of Thedas and treat them equally, a softened Leliana could.

More than anything, she wants order and stability back and ensures that the Grey Wardens are rebuilt, even though Alistair is killed in the fade instead of Hawke. She very much related to Hawke and couldn’t bring herself to let Hawke die.

When it came to the Well of Sorrows, Viera was very torn. On the one hand she didn’t think it right to allow a human being to take in such powerful information. She made a point of doing all of the rituals at the Temple of Mythal but wasn’t sure if she truly was worthy of it’s knowledge. In the end she took the knowledge for herself because at the very least it would be better suited in the hands of an elf than a human at the very least.

However in the midst of all of this, her clan was killed. Up until that point, she’d always assumed that she would go home and back to her family when all of this was over. She threw herself into the Inquisition knowing that she had truly nothing else. An identity that she was very hesitant to accept was one that she now could not let go of or she would have nothing left. Upon meeting Ameridan, she truly realized how fraught her existence was. Even if she did everything right, it would only lead to being forgotten much like her clan, lost to history.

Initially, she had every intention of keeping the Inquisition together but it is ironically the Iron Bull that changes her mind. Who is her canonical love interest. At first they began sleeping together as a way for her to not feel so numb, less like the weight of the world was on her shoulders but it very slowly turned into something more. The realization that she wanted to start over, have a clean slate free of the Inquisition, which had trapped her and kept her feeling as though she didn’t have a choice other than to keep it installed. But Solas knows them all too well (even though Solas and Viera were never very close) and she can move about the world freely without her title.

So she and Bull part ways temporarily while they begin to rebuild a new force to stop Solas. Her arm is replaced with a crossbow after getting some training with it from Varric and from there on, she dedicates herself to keeping the world safe.
