Flower Face: an Elain Archeron playlist
This is my love letter to Elain Archeron, my interpretation of what she sounds like were she to exist as music. Consider this more as an experience and less a list of songs with lyrics that relate to Elain. @elainarcheronweek
My Elain is made up in part of deeply personal headcanons, plus versions of her in works by @bloomingdarkgarden (What Bloomed in the Dark Garden) and @thefangirlofhp (sillage). She is Danielle De Barbarac, a quiet girl with a rich internal world and a heart capable of feeling every emotion ten fold. She has one foot in The Dreaming world of the mystics, and one foot in her rapidly evolving life in Velaris. She wants to be seen for who she is and loved for who she is, gardening-scarred hands and all. She quietly yearns for someone she can't have, never once sharing her woes with any of her sisters. She brings things to life and values learning, creation, travel. This is a musical journey that represents my interpretation of Elain's soul, her internal world, her life in Velaris, her hopes for the future. (It is Elriel leaning, as a disclaimer, because ... I simply cannot help it.) I started off the journey with nature sounds, because Elain is so deeply tied to the land in my mind, and with lush, atmospheric music representing how she presents to the world. As the list goes on, we go deeper and more secrets are revealed until the songs become almost entirely instrumental (moody and brooding in nature to represent an emotional landscape). There are songs in different languages or without words entirely, to represent her displacement into an unfamiliar land, in a changed body, and the uprooting of her ingrained beliefs about that land and the creatures living there; about her integration into the Night Court and her insistence that she belongs. It ends with her prayer to The Mother.
SONGLIST
(Sometimes I will include my decisions for including certain pieces. Other times, I hope you can glean your own meaning <;3) PART I
(nature sounds)
I often imagine Elain waking up at sunrise, before the rest of the city, and just imbibing the land, the birds, the flowers. Noticing things other's don't notice. Seeking solace among nature.
James Newton Howard - A Hidden Life (instrumental)
Mariee Sioux - Wild Eyes tiny darling ghost holder you our soft spirit breather... you plant your burderns way deep down in
Wickerbird - Llewellyn sleep, interred within old Avalon
A song that evokes visions, dreams, prophecy, distant lands
AURORA - Under the Water under the water, we can't breathe we can't breathe under the water, we die hearts will dream again lungs will breathe in feet won't fail you now arms won't let you down
This song has been on my Elain playlist since the start. I always reminds me of her journey into the cauldron, the terror and grief that befell her afterward, and learning how to keep going despite everything.
Flower Face - Cornflower Blue i wanna lay on the kitchen floor with you i wanna do all the things that lovers do bruised on your face like a watercolour bloom moonlight paints your skin cornflower blue
Elain develops feelings for a quiet Shadowsinger...
Steven Price - Ophelia (instrumental) Jean Luc Lenoir - The Mermaid's Croon (instrumental)
"The quiet dreamer"
Ane Brun - Joga (live version) all that no one sees, you see what's inside of me every nerve that hurts, you heal deep inside of me you don't have to speak i feel emotional landscapes
This is a quintessential Elriel song for me, so perfectly capturing how I believe she feels about him (how they feel about each other, honestly).
AURORA - Exist for Love and then you take me in and everything in me begins to feel like I belong
Joe Hisaishi - Heartbroken Kiki (instrumental)
Rachel Portman - Three Women (instrumental)
Elain, Nuala, and Cerridwen's blossoming friendship. Them in the kitchen learning how to make bread, them teaching Elain how to slyfoot, them whispering secrets about lovers and childhood to each other.
PART II (Powers Awakening, Hidden Secrets of the Magic of Velaris, Witches and Mystics)
AURORA - The Forbidden Fruits of Eden (an interlude)
Powers brimming just below the surface, unseen, but felt by Elain.
(nature sounds)
Elain starts visiting the Sidra more and more as her powers develop stronger. I just imagine her sitting by the water, with a scarf around her head, and a small picnic basket, just enjoying the quiet and thinking about her visions and dreams.
Thomas Newman - Starlit (instrumental)
Night-blooming Jasmine, Elain discovers her place in the shadows of Velaris
Karliene - The Fields of Ard Skellig
Elain digs her fingers into the soil of Velaris and night-blooming flowers blossom all around her. She learns the secrets of the mystics and how to control her powers. Our Lady Kingslayer comes into her own and surprises everyone with her strength of spirit.
The Naked and the Famous - Teardrop night, night of matter black flowers blossom fearless on my breath Runah - Witch how she bathes in it she never had a lover that said her name before the way it drops from his lips it's like she's never heard her name sound like a song and she craves it oh she has woken the witch she's becoming Kati Ran - Vinda slowly the journey goes like the walk of an old man seeking in waves and seeking in sand hear the psalm of the wind, its being sung over the mountain and you, will you listen to the melody in the evening Mykur - Nordlys (instrumental) Thomas Newman - Luthien Tinuviel (instrumental) Agnes Obel - Rosian (instrumental) Helisir - Brisingamen (instrumental) Johannes Bornlof - Wolfpack (instrumental) Honey Gentry - Aphrodite Aphrodite, hear my pain I want to fall in love again Not in love with a man of this world Fall in love with life itself
Elain's prayer to the mother

So who among the Arthurian characters is into cottagecore? Morgan has to be right?
hi!
you know what i'm gonna have to disagree. i don't think morgan's affiliation to magic and nickname "le fay" are enough, especially bc she prides herself on a lofty status that elevates her above the humble rural living that cottagecore romanticizes. i mean here she is in the vulgate proclaiming herself a king's daughter (isn't she the daughter of duke gorlois?) while she prepares to kill her husband and get away with it.
queen shit. here are some characters i think would be into cottagecore.
arthur: when thomas berger wrote him as loving his simple life in wales with his family and sleeping out with the dogs and genuinely relishing his modest upbringing with his foster brother? i felt that.
blanchefleur: she definitely named herself "white flower" after her own garden's award winning blossoms at the county fair. she bottles it for perfume too, if you're interested. perceval always keeps a little vial around his neck so he can smell it and think of her while on quest or when he gets lost on his way to take out the trash. thanks wifey.
brangaine and palamedes: whether or not she can actually achieve this lifestyle whilst in the service of isolde, she definitely dreams of fleeing to the countryside with palamedes. it also makes his commute shorter (cottage is on the edge of the enchanted woods in which the questing beast roams).
culhwch and olwen: after the nightmarish tasks they underwent just to get married they absolutely retired far away from court life where those shenanigans wouldn't reach their children.
dindrane: she's the quintessential nun, one who didn't learn necromancy. she enjoys all the typical stuff expected in a remote hermitage; gardening, baking, making wine, going on an adventure bilbo style complete with chaotic means and tragic ends, bird watching.
fisher king and elaine: since the queen passed away they just want more father and daughter bonding time out on the boat to fish. they catch dinner in their little pond and take it home to cook and go to sleep happy. they do the same thing again the next day without any obligations besides living. nothing bad happens.
green knight and wife: pretty sure they invented cottagecore or at least introduced the concept into the realm. they have their own line of cottagecore starter kits with little seeds to grow personalized mini gardens for a country oasis even in the discomfort of your monarch-sanctioned barracks. so what if the plants they sell are annuals and you have to buy a new one every year. aren't you committed to the aesthetic?
isolde and tristan: did they or did they not smash in that grotto like their lives depended on it? i rest my case.
merlin: have you read mary stewart's merlin trilogy? my guy wanted the quiet life so bad it made him look stupid. he died as he lived, in the middle of fucking nowhere. say what we will he committed to the bit to the very end.
tor: he is literally a cowboy farmer kid turned knight. actually forget the whole list he's the only one.
thanks for the ask!

03/12/2023-Southsea and home
Photos taken in this set: 1-5. The exuberant, eyecatching and excellent male Black Redstart on the rocks/boulders east of Southsea Castle. The bird we came here again in the hope of seeing as we did in early November 2022 and I am thrilled we saw one again here. I don't think we've seen too many males in the strong collection of sightings we've been lucky to have of them over the years. I am ecstatic that we got some precious views of this beautiful and very pleasing bird to see as it flitted around on the rocks and sat nicely on projections. This was my first of the year, likely the last species I'll add to my incredible and unprecedented year list and it's a fitting one to see late on being a bird I have such a strong connection to. The species took my 2022 year list to 200 and today it's my 220th species of 2023 an amazing figure I am over the moon to reach in this sensational wild year for me. 6. The tree out the back looking lovely still, kissed by a bit of sunlight. 7, 10 and 11. Views at Southsea with beautiful and dynamic sky scenes. 8. A Carrion Crow on a sign at Southsea which was entertaining to see. 9. Some climbing nightshade berries at the car park which were lovely to see.
Woodpigeon seen closely, the quintessential Portsmouth and winter sight of Brent Geese on the green, Black-headed Gull, yarrow, daisy and oxtongue were good to see at Southsea too. A Robin seen dashing out of the front garden as we went out, Goldfinches, Collared Doves, Starlings, House Sparrow and Long-bodied Cellar spider were good to see at home today.

Big unpopular opinion - I really dislike the saying, "Laena tamed the rogue prince," especially the people who still use that saying for show daemon. They had viserys say, "daemon and rhaenyra share the blood of the dragon they are restless and chaotic" and I feel like that goes for both book/show daemon and rhaenyra and it really describes daemon perfectly. I love daemon and Laena's relationship especially book version but I wouldn't describe it as she "tamed him" it gets worse when i see the nettles and daemon shippers say the same thing that nettles "tamed daemon"
A) Agreement
I dislike it as well, since it makes Daemon seem more an animal than a human AND in the show we see Daemon broken or worn down by his separation from Rhaenyra and his dreams of Targ dragonriding glory, himself driving that glory for his house.
He wasn’t tamed, he seemed to lose a huge chunk of drive. Canonically, you could say Laena gave Daemon room to really indulge and explore his tenderer side, thus his leeway and becoming a father. But he never actually lost his quintessential "fire". Like Harwin for Rhaenyra, she gave him emotional safety.
B) Myth and Storytelling
The idea that anyone can be "tamed" through a relationship comes from people looking at the oversimplified or just misunderstood stories adapting from the tale of Beauty and the Beast archetype (not Disney; ATU 425 “Animal as Bridegroom”: ). Tales where a woman “taming” the bestial, undesirable behavior of a man or removing those qualities that the audience/society does not want or list as taboo.
Here is a description of “Animal as Bridegroom” (the super category) indexed as “The Search for the Lost Husband” in ATU:
refers to a group of folk and fairy tales about a human woman marrying or being betrothed to an animal. The animal is revealed to be a human prince in disguise or under a curse.
“Animal as Bridegroom” [ATU 425A]:
In folktales classified as tale type ATU 425A, "The Animal as Bridegroom", the maiden breaks a taboo or burns the husband's animal skin and, to atone, she must wear down a numbered pair of metal shoes.
“Son of the Witch (The Witch's Tasks)” [ATU 425B]:
This category of tales involves the heroine performing difficult tasks for her husband's family (more specifically, her mother-in-law). In this type, the heroine reaches the house of a witch (sometimes, her mother-in-law; sometimes, another female relative of her husband), where she works as her servant. One of the tasks is to go to another witch's house, and fetch from there a box, a casket, a bag, a sack of something that her husband warns not to open, but she does.
And “Beauty and the Beast” [ATU 425C]
Zipes summarized the tale thus: the third or youngest daughter asks her father (a merchant or king) for a gift (bird or flower). The only place he can find such a trifle is the garden of the beast or monster, who demands the merchant/king's daughter in return. Richard MacGillivray Dawkins, in turn, remarked that the heroine's sisters asked their father for material possessions (e.g., dresses), whereas she asks for a simple token that will lead her to the enchanted prince.
Uther remarks that this type contains the "presents for the daughters", lacking, however, a quest for the lost spouse.
But GRRM tends to subvert tales, not retell them 1:1, and we see it in Sansa’s story of always being paired with the conventionally unattractive, bestialized man.
And the idea, when focusing on how there is taming, is very metaphorically murderous. Check out rhaenyragendereuphoria’s post HERE.

Kaimbwala is a charming village with modest fields and mud dwellings that provides an insight into traditional Punjabi life. Because of its relative ease, the journey is ideal for families and casual riders. To ensure a hassle-free experience, book your Chandigarh bike rental near Sukhna Lake in advance.

25th May 2023: Winchester, Lakeside and home
Photos taken in this set: 1 and 2. Peregrine at Winchester Cathedral, I believe Winnie, a delight to see her in these crucial days of breeding with the chick coming on nicely, and extend my run of photographing Winchester Peregrines in consecutive months since November 2021. It’s always so magical to see them and I enjoyed it today, it was nice to chat to someone about the Peregrines and birds generally too. 3. Beautiful gladiolus in Abbey Gardens, a lovely colour. 4, 5 and 10. Beautiful views on a gorgeous sunny evening when cutting through Lakeside on my way back from the station tonight, it was good to see the meadows carpeted in the rich colour of oxeye daisies and buttercups and sorrel too. Lovely to be out in. 6. Roses on the way to the station this morning, I’ve had a good week and day for them. 7. A beautiful lunch time at Winchester Cathedral. 8. Wood avens and forget-me-not in Winchester, key flowers of a fair few nice ones seen here today. 9. Nice green trees near the railway station in Winchester.
Once again it was wonderful to see Swifts gliding through the sky at Winchester with some at home tonight too, a quintessential sight of spring and summer evenings. I liked seeing my first Brown House moth of 2023 before bed last night, this morning and this evening and an exciting view of a Buzzard gliding over out the front this evening and hovering at one point, I’ve seen them out the back before but never out the front I don’t think. Mallards in Abbey Gardens and Woodpigeon and Feral Pigeon were other Winchester highlights with buttercups, speedwell, iris, cleavers, red valerian and a type of knapweed other key plants seen there. Vetch and broad-leaved clover were nice to see at Lakeside tonight too and I enjoyed hearing Blackcap on arrival in Winchester this morning.
