I don't sew much anymore, but I needed something at work to hide my unwashed hair, so I bought this gorgeous fabric I've been coveting (I work at a sewing store):
Tumblr media
I cut it into a square and tied it around my head rockabilly style. It looks great, but it will look better once it's hemmed, so I'm gonna wash it and square it. I'm whip-stitching the edges so that they don't fray in the washing machine. This is my first time folding over the fabric to whip-stitch for washing: half the sewing!
This is also my first time trying Gütermann's hand quilting thread, in my continuing quest to find thread that won't tangle when hand sewing. So far it's pretty good!
Notes:
This is actually the scrap I cut off in order to square the piece I used as a bandana. I'm practising on this so that I don't mess up the good piece.
Fabric is Hamil Textiles #24471. My boss says it's 100% cotton but it feels like it has rayon in it.
Thread is Gütermann Quilting, 100% cotton, Col. 5114 (we don't stock a quilting thread that actually matches the blue in the fabric).
In case you're wondering: I don't own a sewing machine because I prefer to sew by hand.

Great example of everyday noragi (work clothes, worn by farmers for ex.) from Taisho period. Note the makisode sleeve shape, offering freedom of mouvement!
You can see the close-up of the weave, made from asa (bast-fiber like hemp or linen) and kamiyori (twisted paper thread). Despite its "rugged" materials, weave is delicately interlocked with regular black stripes.
The coat also presents geometrical sashiko (white quilting), both reinforcing easily worn areas (collar, hems, inner center back), and decorating the garment.
PSA for writers: please please please don't put characters doing manual labour in "silk" kimono. I'll be forever grateful ;)

I've started quilting my quilt and I thought it would be fun to approximately quilt in the shape of major roads (thanks yarrow for suggesting this in april) but now I want to quilt it more densely and feel locked into the road thing as 1) it is a sin to lie 2) as i am learning, Boston has an infinite number of roads
I will actually probably do leafs or vines or so on but wanted to share my road conundrum
Additional planning materials:

If you're interested in textile art, please understand it will not end at one of the arts. Interested in weaving? There are many different types, so now you're learning about the culture these styles come from, and with that comes learning about their clothing. Now you're interested in learning how to sew clothing, and much of it has some kind of embroidery. So you do research and see how beautiful it is, and different types of embroidery exist. You decide to learn embroidery and get curious about lace because often they're seen together.
Prepare for a journey and get real good at organizing. You'll soon lose space because of supplies and tools.

Full video of the DTIYS by Hiro-Doodlez! Pictures are great and all, but it's really something special to see it move around and fold and behave like fabric!
I'll definitely be hanging this up once I get home. Again, thank you to @hiro-doodlez for such a fun project! I had so much fun making this and learned so much!

All desire to finally make myself a beautiful and intricate queen sized quilt for winter has been squashed after realizing that long arm quilting is like 400$ minimum even if i provide my own batting and backing

About a year ago I made most of a quilt top and then haven’t touched it since. Naturally, the most logical next step was to start a completely unrelated and significantly more complex quilt top.
And I now present the beginning of: Space Cats!
Tumblr media
This one block took me all frickin day, so as I maybe eventually work up the other 19+ I’ll try to post updates. So stay tuned for more space cats maybe.
