Chapter One: No Rest For The Wicked
(If you want to be added to the tag list lmk!)
prologue \\\ chapter 2
Tumblr media
The REDACTED Clause; If a government employee has housing available and is willing and open, military personnel could temporarily seek refuge there if needed.
——
Well, it appears Eliza wasn’t lying. The cabin was empty. You decide to spend your first day of vacation unpacking and exploring the cabin. Unpacking only took you an hour or so, with you only needing to find a space to store your clothes and pick which bedroom you were going to stay in. You ended up deciding to stay in the master bedroom on the second floor, with a bathroom attached.
The bedroom was, for lack of better words, bare-bones. There was a bed (king-sized, yippee!), a nightstand, a dresser, and a television mounted onto the wall. You couldn’t decipher if this was Adam’s room or not, you wouldn’t be shocked if it was. The bathroom attached didn’t have any products in it, or toilet paper, but it did have a larger-than-average tub.
With nothing important left to do, it was time for exploring. A quick scan of the first floor told you that you weren’t staying in Adam’s bedroom (thank God), and he had preferred a much smaller room downstairs. You could infer this because of the posters mounted into the walls and the large, computer desk on one side of the room. You also located the kitchen, with the dining room attached. The kitchen had a pale blue tiling that matched the cabinets and carpet in the living room. The fridge was nothing fancy but it would make due. The dining room was surprisingly large considering he probably never has company over. The dining table was approximately 8 feet long with 3 chairs on each side, the wood seeming to be Walnut.
There was another bathroom on the first floor, down the hallway from Adam’s bedroom. You could tell this was the one he used because of the 5-in-1 shampoo in the shower. He didn’t have any feminine products in his cabinet (duh), so you mentally added them to your shopping list. He did, however, have a first aid kit under the sink. You shrugged it off, paying it no mind. You were confident you wouldn’t end up needing to use it.
You make your way to the living room and flop backward onto the couch. It was an ugly, plaid pattern, yet shockingly comfortable. You go over your shopping list in your head as you switch the television on. You would need to stock up on pads or tampons, as well as get groceries for dinner. You noticed earlier while going through the rooms that the outlets were a different type than in the States, so you would also need an adapter. As you close your eyes and try to make sense of your mind, the excitement of the day and jet lag catches up to you. Quietly, with the TV on in the background, you drift off to sleep.
——
The last thing you expected was to get awoken by not one, but two pairs of fists slamming on the front door. You jump up, sleep still in your eyes, and stumble to the door. You peer through the peephole and see four men in uniform, one getting held up by another and bleeding everywhere. What. The. Fuck.
“For the love of god, open the bloody door mate!” A gruff, British accent spits out.
Without thinking, you swing open the door. The men urgently push past you into the cabin, except for one.
“Where’s the dining room, love?” He tries to ask gently, but you can tell he has a sense of panic to him. He holds eye contact with you, dark brown eyes looking into yours. His hat dons the British flag, but it’s stained with blood.
Wow. What a hunk.
“It’s uh- there.” You say dumbly, pointing down the hall. All four of them disappear into the dining room, leaving you alone. You freeze for a minute, assessing the situation. Oh shit. That man is probably bleeding all over the table. You rush past the kitchen to confirm your suspicions. Yes, the man with the large wound on his side was in fact on the table, bleeding all over the place. The largest man in the room, and for sure the creepiest considering the strange mask on his face, was holding pressure to the wound end telling the man below him to ‘stop fucking moving.’
“Medkit, Garrick, where’s the goddamn medkit?” The man with the gruff voice throws his hands in the air in exasperation.
“Respectfully, captain, I'm fucking looking!” Brown-eyed hunk spits back, digging through his pack
“I, er, have one.” Both men’s heads whip around to face you. You blink back at them. “Oh right. hold on-“ You rush into the first-floor bathroom, accidentally shoulder-checking the wall on your way there. You swing open the cabinet under think. Aha! The first aid kit. Wow, you didn’t think you would need it, let alone so soon. You hand the first aid kit over to ‘Garrick’ as soon as you reenter the dining room. He gets to work on the man on the table, cutting his shirt away and disinfecting the wound.
You stand awkwardly in the corner of the room. You take this moment to thoroughly inspect their appearances. They all seem to be military men, likely special forces or the like. The man with the mask on has a deep voice and doesn’t seem to be talking much. You think you see blood on his leg but it’s hard to make out with the black on his uniform. His accent seems different from that of the others, but you think he’s still English. The man on the table has a short, buzzed mohawk. You can’t decipher what the hell he’s saying, with the accent and the cursing coming out of his mouth. You are more focused on the blood dripping from the table to the pale blue tiles on the floor. Your eyes water and you can feel the bile rise in your throat.
You turn and run into the kitchen, vomiting into the trash can. You never thought you had a phobia of blood, but you have never seen a wound of that caliber. Jesus Christ, you hope he doesn’t die here. You wipe your mouth and try to steady yourselves.
“Towels.”
Your eyes widen and you spin around, seeing ‘Ghost’, whose name you heard from Mr. Mohawk, standing in the doorway.
“…Pardon?” You blink, shivering under his intense stare.
“Where are your towels.” You point at the cabinet on the right side of the room, eyes never leaving his. He strides over there in two steps and grabs almost all the towels out of the drawer. He leaves without so much as a thank you. Wow… rude.
You compose yourself and follow him. Garrick is still stitching up the mohawked man’s wounds, working as quickly and efficiently as humanly possible.
“Excuse me, love, but where is your husband?” The man with the facial hair asks you. You look around, before pointing to yourself. He raises a brow in response. “Yes, you.”
“You have the wrong person, I’m not married.”
“No? Are you sure?” You furrow your brows.
“Yeah, I think I would know if I was married.”
“Then how do you know Adam Baker?”

heart of stone (2/?)
AO3
It’s three days before Janis’ rest results are available. That night, her mom pops her head around her bedroom door and tells her they need to be at the hospital early the next morning. She had spent the intervening time lounging around her house, rotating through different sweaters and reading the same book over and over, all the while filling in Damian and Cady as much as she could, trying to reassure them and herself that it was nothing and in a few days she’d probably be fine. She’d be back bugging them in no time, probably by the first day of school, in fact.
And that better be true, she thinks, because she has never been so bored in her life. In those few days between appointments her biggest achievement was successfully showing her dad how to master Netflix and introducing him to Killing Eve. She had tried to draw, but no idea stayed still in her mind long enough for her to recapture it on paper. The pencil bounced between her hands as she looked through outlines of unfinished sketches, trying to make one jump out at her. She puts them all in her drawer with a resigned sigh, one of those impossibly rare moments where she willingly admits defeat and submits to her fate. Her body feels too weary to move and her brain completely burnt out, but her soul keeps pushing her to create, to be active and busy. Her hands weren’t meant for scrolling through her phone as she’s half asleep, they’re artists hands, built for innovation. The restlessness crept through her nerves and up to her brain, shaking it so much that when her mom hung up the phone and told her she had an appointment the next day, she threw her head back and thanked God.
But her initial relief is gone now as she and her parents follow the perky secretary’s directions down to the doctor’s room, passing sunshine yellow walls and hurrying over pristine white floors. She keeps her hands in her pockets, her heart clenching each time she catches a glimpse of a patient. Some of them smile, some of them don’t, some look normal and others… not so much, gaunt faces and loose headscarves. Wrong as it is, her anxiety only spikes when she sees them, not to mention her bedside manner isn’t the greatest. Perhaps it’s lucky her parents don’t set high goals for her because she’d never make a doctor.
Her dad keeps looking back at her, asking if she’s okay, and she tells him she is, even though her chest is pained and tight, either from worry or her own body’s weakness. Or worse, both. Her little personal storm cloud makes itself known again, desperate for her attention after she had put so much effort into ignoring it. It clings to her brain and strains against her skull, stretching over and whispering in her ear, telling her she should get used to this place. She might be seeing more of it than she wants to.
She closes her eyes tightly and stops walking for a second, wishing she could go back to a few days ago, lounging in bed with Cady when everything was normal and okay. But she can’t, so she jogs to catch up with her parents and keeps her eyes on her boots.
“Mr and Mrs Sarkisian.” The doctor they meet is around her dad’s age, brown hair beginning to grey with thick rimmed black glasses and wearing a funky green and blue tie over a white shirt. If he ditched the white coat and clipboard, he’d look like a dad. On his desk, amongst the paperwork and nameplate, is a Rubix cube, a framed photo of two kids and a stuffed frog chilling against the computer, wearing an oversized pair of sunglasses. Doctor Dad looks at Janis, his mouth opening and closing silently for a split second, a fearful glint in his eyes. Exactly what she needs. “And Janis, I assume.” She lets him shake her hand, not letting herself show how clammy it feels. His nerves sparks on the skin in a way only someone who has been through it could pick up on.
She’s been reading him since she first saw him and none of it puts her at ease. His smile looks like someone is pulling it across his face with wires and his eyes flash behind his glasses when he looks at her. His breathing hitches, his fingers fidget and when he sits down, she sees him pull himself back together, starting with the shoulders and up to the chin, straightening everything out, looking presentable. Approachable. Softening the blow he’s about to make. Maybe her parents take notice, or not. They’re specific things, only noticeable to those who are looking for them.
They do say ignorance is bliss.
“These… these types of conversations are never easy.” Oh, what a brilliant opening line. It makes her mom’s hand clasp her dad’s with a grip that’s white-knuckled and desperate. As for Janis herself, she squirms in her chair, biting down hard on her thumbnail. She feels like there’s a million little centipedes all over her body, scurrying around with their tiny feet, wriggling into her elbows, writhing beneath her knees, twisting around on her stomach. She could burst at any moment and they’d invade his office, bury themselves in his carpeting and make homes in the vents.
“Just give it to me straight, doc,” she blurts out. Her parents turn to her, more amused than surprised, and she offers a shrug, the beginnings of a smirk on her face. “Which might be hard in my case.” Her parents chuckle as she looks over at the doctor, herself getting a kick out of his own dumbfounded expression. “Because I’m a lesbian.”
“Oh, right,” he says, managing something that sounds like a laugh. He clears his throat and opens the file in his hand, blocking it from her view in a move that she isn’t sure is accidental. Pressure builds in her chest, her lungs feeling smaller and smaller inside her. The clock must be wrong, because it says only seconds have passed, but they’ve been there for far longer. Minutes. Hours, it must be. She grips the side of the plastic chair, drumming her nails along the underside and pressing her palm into the metal legs. Her mom rubs her hand down her back, asking quietly if she needs anything. She shakes her head, knowing ‘for this to be over’ probably isn’t a good answer.
“Janis… I’m afraid you have leukaemia.”
She’s falling.
Someone took her chair out from underneath her and she’s falling. She phases through the floor and keeps falling, her surroundings a silent blur. She tries to breathe but nothing can come in or out, her hand outstretched but no one holding it. She’s trapped in a bubble, one with no air or no sound, keeping everyone else away from her. She’s alone as she falls, nothing but the white expanse for company, her heart still, her mind empty. All she knows is she’s hurtling towards… something, at full speed and getting faster with each second.
“Janis!”
She blinks, the bottom of the chair cutting a deep, red line into her palms. But it’s steady beneath her, even if nothing else is. All at once, her body and mind come back to her, her heart beats faintly in her chest, weak from shock, and her breaths are quick and rapid. Her brain is a jumbled and confused mess, so much so that she preferred it when she couldn’t think of anything. Now her mind is opening ideas in a flash and tossing them out just as quickly; dashing around her head so thoughtlessly and rapidly that she can’t get a grip on anything. So instead she’s just sitting there, a ringing in her head and cold weakness in her chest, waiting for someone to fix this.
“Janis.” Her dad’s hand is on hers, his fingers curling around with a touch that’s so soft and gentle it almost doesn’t belong in here. Not with that word lingering between them. “Are you okay kid?”
How the hell is she meant to be okay?
“Leukaemia.” She drags her eyes up, not to meet the doctor, but to look past him, to look at the ugly shade of yellow his wall is painted and the framed certificate, declaring him as having graduated from somewhere with a degree in something. She bites her lip so hard she feels the beginnings of a little lump forming there. Like the ones on her neck. Like the ones they always say are a sign of…
The word sticks in her throat and she has to tear it out of her.
“Like… cancer? Like the cancer kind of leukaemia?”
“I’m afraid so,” the doctor says, his voice soft. She doesn’t know if she’s ever heard a voice that soft before, maybe when she was a kid, a really tiny kid and her goldfish died and her mom had to explain to her what death was.
Why did her mind have to go there?
It’s only now she notices one of the posters on the wall. Bright green lettering and a glossy photo of a little girl, fourteen, maybe thirteen, sitting up in a bed, a tube in her nose and a hat on her bald head, grinning brightly up a nurse with a sweet face. That’s what cancer is. It’s losing your hair and being in hospital and having tubes sticking in and out of your body. It’s other stuff too, stuff she hasn’t thought about and doesn’t know because it’s not for her. Cancer isn’t for her, it’s for old grandmas in knitted cardigans and tragic little kids who get to meet spiderman. Occasionally, it’s for teenagers and young people like her, but not her specifically. Never her. Cancer is something that exists far away, lurking around corners, on the tongues of adults who them about the dangers of cellphones or their health teacher telling them to eat healthily. It exists all right, but it doesn’t happen to her.
“Janis,” her mom says gently, running her fingers through her hair. Her voice is thin and shaking as though she’s about to cry. Why would she be crying? She’ll fix this. There’s no way this is real and now her mom is crying over nothing.
“I’m fine,” she replies, squeezing her mom’s hand back. Life comes back to her body and she looks up at the doctor, finally feeling heat inside her, attacking the cold emptiness and sending it back where it belongs. It flares up in her chest, a spark that she’d sorely missed these past few days. She grips her mom’s hand tighter, her own hand shaking and her fingers tight and tense. “I’m fine because I don’t have cancer.”
“Janis I know this is difficult to hear-”
“It’s not. It’s not because I am fine. Because I don’t have cancer, you did the test wrong.”
“Our team ran several tests. We ruled out other possibilities.”
“Clearly you didn’t if you’re telling me that I have cancer, which I don’t, so do another one.” Her grip on her mom isn’t just for her sake, but it’s also keeping Janis from getting up and flipping that desk over and telling Doctor Dad to get fucked. Who does he even think he is anyway? That degree can’t be much good if he’s telling her this and screwed up a test like that.
“Janis,” he sighs, gesturing with his hands like that’s going to fix anything. “I understand that this is a lot to take in right now-”
“It’s not,” she snaps, the smile on her face strained and sharp. “It’s not because you’re fuck-you’re wrong. I don’t-I can’t have-”
“Janis!”
Her mom’s voice is what pulls her back down. When she looks over at her, she sees brown eyes identical to hers, but they’re filled with tears and rimmed red and show a tiny spark of anger amongst the sadness. Her mom’s mouth is half-open, a plea waiting on her lips, begging her daughter to see sense. Her hand tightens around Janis’, her grip becoming less comforting and careful and more irritated and exhausted.
“Sweetheart… please.”
God she’s a horrible person. Her parents just heard probably one of the worst things a parent could hear, and she just threw a tantrum over it.
She looks at the doctor with uncharacteristic and unfamiliar shyness, trying to pick herself back up, present herself as anything close to reasonable after the meltdown she just had. Something about him makes her feel like he understands. Maybe she’s not the first to react like that. Or maybe it’s wishful thinking.
“So what happens now?” she asks in a flat voice.
“What happens now is you start treatment as soon as possible,” Doctor Dad explains. He leans forwards on his desk, his hands clasped together and when Janis notices the distressed expression on his face, the pain of guilt in her stomach only gets worse. “My colleagues have already discussed this and we think it would be best for you to begin within the next two weeks. The earliest start would be next Monday.”
“Next Monday?” she echoes, her voice cracking. “But… but I start school in three days I start before that, I can’t…” She knows it’s a lost cause and there’s no point to it, but it’s the last thing she has. Her school is the last part of her life that’s real in all this, so forgive her for clinging to it. She looks from her parents to the doctor, three different, grave expressions and only one is able to give her an answer.
“I’m afraid going to school will be out of the question,” the doctor tells her. Her mom’s fingers lace between hers, squeezing her hand in what’s meant to be comforting, but Janis can’t feel it. She’s too busy trying to push back another protest. “I’m sorry, Janis. There is the option of online school, but your treatment is likely to make you too tired to focus. It might be easier on your mental health if you saved school until next year.”
Saved school until next year. When everyone she knows is already gone and this year’s juniors will be seniors. She’ll have to wait a year for all the fun stuff that seniors get to do, cutting in the lunch line, going to prom, graduation parties, using the senior’s lounge. She’ll be sitting in a class of people she’s a year older than her, all in pre-formed friendship groups and likely knowing her as Cancer Girl. Cady, Damian, Karen, everyone else will be graduating this year and will move on to new adventures. And she’ll be left behind.
The idea makes her more sick than the cancer has.
“Jan?” her dad asks softly. She finds three pairs of expectant eyes on her and all she can offer is a small nod.
“Okay,” she whispers. She’s not sure what she’s saying okay to.
“What about the treatment itself?” her mom asks. “How is that going to work?”
“We might have to do a few more tests to find that out,” he explains. “But it would likely be chemotherapy. What we’ve discussed so far is two weeks in hospital and then a week at home to recover for around three months. Thankfully, the cancer hasn’t progressed far enough to warrant more, and we’ll want to keep it at that. The goal is to get Janis to remission.” She nods, her head starting to throb a little. She presses her fingers to her temples before she can stop herself, and that’s a red flag to both her parents. She drops it, muttering a lie about being fine.
“Of course there will be a lot of support for Janis through this,” he goes on. “There is an excellent support group and appointments can be made with a counsellor on a one-to-one basis.”
Somehow that doesn’t help, she thinks. It’s not meant to, she guesses.
It’s cold when they step outside, or that might just be her. The wind cuts through her jacket and the sweater she pulled on and attacks her skin, leaving her fighting off shivers. She pushes her dad’s arm off her when he tries to help her to the car. That only makes her feel worse, mentally and physically.
Being in a car with your parents after a cancer diagnosis is a weird experience. The tension between the three of them strangles her. An unspoken conversation passes between her parents in the front and frankly, it pisses her off. If they’re going to be concerned about her, they could at least do her the courtesy of involving her. But maybe it’s better that way because despite being an arm’s length from them, she feels as though she’s miles away. Like when they started driving, she stayed put. She sinks back into the seat and stares straight ahead, the pain in her head coming back louder and stronger, pushing against her skull and screaming behind her eyelids.
“Janis… are you okay?” her mom asks.
“Fine,” she sighs.
“Do you need anything? We can go to the gas station-”
“I said I’m fine,” she replies, firmer than before. “I just want to lay down.”
She’s not kidding. She wants to press her face into her pillow until everything blacks out and all that exists is the colours that explode behind her eyelids. Then they can fade to, and she won’t have to deal with anything anymore.
They drive on in a heavy silence, and the longer they go, the angrier she finds herself growing. She doesn’t know where it’s directed, at herself or her parents or the doctor or the universe, but it’s there, rising in tandem with her the pain in her head and making her restless. She grabs her upper arm and squeezes hard, pressing her nails in until it starts to hurt, just to get it out somewhere.
“Hey… why don’t we go to Dairy Queen?” her dad suggests, as though they’re on their way back from mini golfing. It’s a sweet offer and Janis almost smiles at it. But it’s why it’s sweet that she doesn’t want it.
“I don’t want to,” she replies. “I just want to go home.” Besides, there is a real risk of her upchucking a milkshake on the seat.
Her parents exchange another worried look, their hands clasping over the gearshift, and Janis has to bite back a scream.
When they do finally get home, Janis doesn’t wait for them to get out of the car. Instead she storms ahead, regardless of how it hurts her head more, because she’s so damn relieved to be out of that care and in open space. She opens the door with her own key, remembering to leave it open for them. She runs into the hallway and then stops almost immediately, her chest tight and her breaths coming in short, quick gulps. Something rushes against her and grabs at her legs, and she takes a minute to work out that it’s Maxie, no doubt pouting at her and wondering what she was doing and where she was and why she didn’t take him. He’s probably whimpering or barking, and her dad is probably trying to talk to her, but she can’t hear anything but the blood rushing in her ears.
“Oh my God,” she says out loud. Everything she’s held back in the car bubbles over and she can’t hold it back any more.
She just about makes it to her room in time to throw herself on the bed and start screaming. She doesn’t even sound like a human. It’s deep and it’s guttural, tearing at her throat and painted with rage and pain and fear. Poor Maxie is probably hiding in his bed, scared of the monster upstairs. Her eyes, her face burns and her bedroom melts away, leaving just a mesh of dark colours bleeding together. Tears and snot run down her face and over her hands and on the pillows, making the mark of a miserable, self-pitying girl going insane.
Her head doesn’t just hurt any more, it’s screeching and kicking at her and she can’t do anything about it. She can’t do anything about anything. That’s the problem. Her chest aches and her neck hurts and her mouth is dry and her eyes burn. But all that’s nothing to what’s going on in her heart and head, where dangerous, toxic cocktails bubble. All she wants to do is not feel, but she feels everything and it’s all just pain.
She runs out of tears at one point and they dry on her face as she looks up at the ceiling, the word “cancer” written in invisible ink above her. She thinks “I might die” and then rolls her eyes at herself for being bleak. She wants to tell her all the good stuff about new treatments and technology and whatever but it’s all surface level nonsense. Fear wins over optimism and it cuts right into her, deep into her soul.
She doesn’t know what she’s most worried about and she’s an idiot for it. Not knowing if she’s more scared of the fatal disease wreaking destruction and chaos inside her body or of not getting to go to Cady’s Mathletes competitions or see Damian in the musical. It should be plainly obvious what’s the worse one, but it isn’t. Is this her now? Vapid and shallow, more obsessed with her petty teenage fun than her health? Was she always like this?
Her parents find her laying across her bed, unblinking, the slow rise and fall of her chest the only thing that indicate her being alive.
“How long ago did you guys wait?” she asks flatly.
“Two hours,” her dad explains, shifting on his feet. “We thought you’d need some space.” She nods numbly at that. “Janis… I know this is a lot to process for you.”
“Understatement of the century,” she mumbles. At least she’s still got humour. The bed sags and she sees her mom sitting next to her, her hand reaching out to stroke her hair. Janis can’t remember the last time her mom did that to her, not like this, with dainty fingers that could send her to sleep.
“We’re going to be here the whole time,” her mom promises. “You’re not doing this alone.”
She is though. That’s the problem. They’re not going to be the ones in the hospital beds and taking medicine and missing her senior year. She is. They’ll be beside her all they like, and she hopes to hell they are, but they aren’t going through it with her.
“I know,” is what she says instead. “I know.” She pulls herself to a sitting position, grabbing her mom’s shoulder as her room starts tilting. It takes a few seconds of deep, shaky breaths and her eyes shut tight before she feels normal again. “I’m okay.” She looks up at the two of them, overwhelmed by a feeling of helplessness that makes her feel tiny despite her impressive height. “So what happens now?”
“We’ll take care of the official stuff,” her dad days softly, his arms wrapped around himself Holding himself together. “Letting the school know and all that. But… it might be better if you tell your friends.” She shakes her head on instinct. She can barely get that word out of her mouth on her own. In front of Damian or Cady, she knows she’d crumble.
“Sweetie,” her mom says. Her hand hasn’t stopped stroking her. “I know it’s hard. But they love you and they’re going to want to hear it from you. Not from us and not from the school either.” Janis presses her face into her knees, blinking away another wave of tears. They’re right. Of course they’re right. But that doesn’t mean that the idea of telling them makes her want to vomit.
Right now, only she, her mom, her dad and some doctors know. And she can pretend the doctors don’t exist and remove them from the equation. And when the only people who know are living in this house, it’s easier for her to pretend that it doesn’t really exist. She can push it away and ignore her parents and keep it inside these walls. Once she tells her friends…
It’s real. There’s no going back after that. Granted there’s no going back either way, but there’s no hiding either.
“Janis,” her mom agrees, sharking a look with her dad. “If it’s really too much for you… we can tell your friends for you.
“No,” she says with a shake of her head. “No, you’re right. They need to hear it from me.”
“Oh, baby,” her mom breathes, hugging her tightly around her shoulders. She’s not crying, but her breathing is ragged and her grip scared. “I’m so sorry. I wish this wasn’t happening to you.” Her dad sits on the other side of her and wraps his arm around her, letting her head on her head on his shoulder. The hug is clumsy and a little forced, no-one knowing when to let go and Janis quickly becomes uncomfortable in their embrace. The longer it goes on, the less like herself she feels.
She spends the rest of the day and most of the following morning looking at her phone, even when she’s eating or watching TV with her dad or playing with Maxie. Every gesture is half-hearted, the building sense of dread distracting her form everything else. She scrolls through the messages from yesterday, Cady asking how her appointment went and Damian asking if she was free and Gretchen asking her opinion on a shirt. All living in blissful ignorance.
It’s no contest as to who to tell first. She sits on her bed, Damian’s face looking up at her from the phone screen, one button all that separates the two of them. Just press a button. How hard can that be? Very hard, it turns out, when your arm feels like lead and you don’t even know what to say to him, your words written and crossed out and written again on the notebook beside you. The worst part is that she isn’t even sure what she’s scared of. There’s a lot to choose from and when it’s telling someone you love as much as she loves him, that only makes it worse. Like she’s on top of a skyscraper, about to be pushed off and into darkness.
She closes her eyes, takes a deep breath, and calls him.
“Hey,” he chirps on the other side, picking up after just one ring. She leans back on her bed, biting her nail, her heart ceasing beating altogether. In the back of her mind, she wonders if he’d been waiting for her. “What’s up?”
“Are you-can you come over?” she asks. “Are you free right now?”
“Uh yeah,” he replies. “Everything okay?” No it’s not, the okay train left the station yesterday and I missed it and I’m about to pull you off it too. “Janis… are you okay?”
“Just… how soon can you come over?” she says, moving from biting her nail to her knuckles. “It’s just… it’s kind of important and I don’t know if I can-”
“Woah, woah, woah, okay,” he replies. “Hey, my mom’s giving me a ride. I’ll be ten minutes, tops. Okay?”
“Okay,” she nods. “Thanks.” She’s not even sure if he heard that last word.
He’s seven minutes actually. Seven minutes between her hanging up the phone and the front door opening, her mom letting him in and telling him she’s up in her room. Every step closer only makes her stomach hurt worse and she prays she’s not headed for a panic attack.
“Hey.” His voice is gentle as he opens the door, stepping into her room cautiously, like she’s in the middle of a minefield. He must have picked up on the tension in her house; rather than draping himself across her bed or sitting on her desk, he lowers himself gently beside her, offering her a comforting smile. The same kind he gave her years ago when she was crying in a bathroom stall. God, she loves him. “Everything okay? You sounded nervous on the phone.”
“Because I was,” she confesses. Her hand wraps around Damian’s, him squeezing tightly, but she doesn’t feel the usual strength she gets from him. There’s just a cold, heavy weight in her stomach. “Oh God.”
“Hey, hey, hey,” he says softly, rubbing his hand up and down her arm, confusion and compassion in his eyes. “It’s okay. Whatever it is, it’s okay.”
“It’s not,” she tells him. Her chest feels like someone is tying a rope around her lungs. The words battle from her mind to her mouth, weary and unwilling. “It’s about my… that doctor’s appointment I had. We found out-”
This is it. The point of no return. No pretending or faking or daydreaming after this.
“Damian… I have cancer.”
Damian shakes his head a little, disbelief written all over his face. He keeps his eyes on her, waiting for her to laugh and tell him she’s kidding, almost willing it so. She wishes. Soon the doubt and hope melt away, his eyes turning sad and his mouth falling open, a small, strangled noise coming out as he realises she’s not kidding. As for her guilt tears her chest open and her face crumples. She begins to untangle herself from him, but he refuses, his arm in a firm grip around her shoulders. Maybe he wants to hold her or maybe he just can’t move, paralysed by what she dropped on him. The longer he goes without talking, the more it hurts her.
“What?” he asks eventually. “You… what?”
“Leukaemia,” she tells him as if that makes it better. He blinks, looking around the room like he’s searching for another answer.
“You have cancer?” he asks. She nods, exhausted from the two sentences she spoke, and he pulls her closer, her head falling onto his shoulder. Tears that aren’t hers fall onto her body and her own wet his shirt. His arms are weak around her as he tries to make sense of it. “How?”
“I don’t know how. It just happened,” she mumbles. “Karma, maybe. I don’t know.”
“Okay then let me talk to Miss Karma because this is… fu-this isn’t…”
“Go on. Say it,” she urges, a grin beginning to tug on her lips. “Just for me.” Maybe this will be the day Damian Hubbard finally says fuck.
“It’s fiddlesticks is what it is.” She laughs and it feels unfamiliar. He pets her hair in a steady rhythm, strength coming back into his body. “So what do you do now? Do you know? What even happens?”
“Okay.” She pulls away from him, seeing for the first time how red his eyes are. “I start… I start getting treatment next Monday.”
“Next Monday?” he interrupts. “But you can’t, we have school. We start school in two days!”
“Yeah I don’t think the cancer gives a shit,” she sighs heavily. “I’m just going to do senior year next year.”
“No,” he whispers, his face nothing short of heartbroken. Part of her is actually kind of weirdly flattered that someone cares so much. Most of her just feels worse every second for doing this to him. “But… we were going to… What about the LGBT society? I’m going to have to run it by myself?” He rakes a hand through his hair and looks over at her. His mouth falls open and his hand drops to his lap. “Oh God I’m sorry.”
“You’re sorry?”
“For making this about me,” he says. “This is about you.”
“Oh please, the other half of your soul has cancer, you can be a little self-centred,” she says.
“Who said you’re the other half of my soul?” he jokes.
“You did.” She lifts the half-heart around her neck, the twin to the one around his. He smiles sadly, his eyes glistening. She tosses her hair over her shoulder, holding on to the only trace of familiarity. “Besides, the club will survive without me. You can always get Cady to do it. I’m sure she’d love something for her college application.”
“Oh my God, Cady,” he says.
Why did she bring up Cady? she thinks as another wave of sadness crashes over and drowns her.
“Have you told her?” She shakes her head, swallowing the lump in her throat.
“How could I?” she says. “You’re… you’re one thing. Cady’s another.” She leans her head on his shoulder, closing her eyes. “I don’t know how to do that to her.” Damian hums in understanding. He doesn’t need to ask what she means. He saw her at her absolute worst five years ago, at her most scared and angry and broken. He’s seen everything there is to her and it hasn’t pushed him away. Cady thinks she’s seen the bad, but that’s just scratching the surface. While she heard how it was back then, Damian lived and breathed it.
What she has with Cady is perfect, far too perfect to be scarred by something like this.
“You know… I could tell her for you,” he offers. “If it’s too much for you.”
“No,” she cuts him off, opening her eyes. “I can’t make you do that.”
“You’re not making me do anything,” he tells her. She nods, but the conversation ends there. Of course he’d do that for her. He’s the most loyal person she’s ever met, worthy of the Hufflepuff badge on his backpack. He’d move Heaven and Earth for the people he loves, especially in their hour of need. Or months of need, she guesses is her case now. He deserves endless happiness and love and joy, and an amazing senior year.
Seconds pass in silence before she croaks out “I’m sorry”.
“Did you just apologise for having cancer?” he asks. He shifts and tilts her head to make her look at him, his hands cupping her face and his eyes severe. She’s never seen him like this before, completely serious, devoid of jokes or laughter, and it makes her nervous. “Janis Catherine Sarkisian, don’t you dare. Don’t you dare apologise for this. This isn’t because of you. This is because… I don’t know. But it’s not you.”
“Okay.” She covers his hands with hers, her breath catching. His thumbs wipe at her wet cheeks and she wonders what she did to deserve him. “Okay, I won’t.”
“Good.” His voice cracks and two tears race each other down his cheek landing in his lap. He takes a heavy, shaking breath before continuing. “You’re going to be okay. You’re going to be fine.”
“Of course you’d say that,” she mumbles, their clasped hands now sitting between them.
“You will be,” he says again, a fierce determination shining on his face. “Even if I have to go in there and physically fight that cancer myself.”
“You’d win,” she tells him, sniffling. They sit in the quiet, letting the weight of her news settle over both of them, a new and terrifying reality looming in front of them. Then she reaches out and pulls him into a hug; her arms wrapped around him, her head in the crook of his neck. As he hugs her back, she can feel the anxiety in his touch and how his touch is far more careful now. Like she’ll break if he holds her too much. But there’s also courage in there and above all, so much tenderness and it makes her heart grow and almost burst out of her stone cold chest.
“I love you,” she whispers against his shirt.
“I love you too,” he replies, ferocity in his voice, and Janis is struck by just how grateful she is that her best friend is Damian.

How Shy met Ver Day 1 -- Wonderful
Next Chapter
“Oh this is beautiful.” Shiloh muttered as she gently picked up the object that had gained her attention.
She really only had meant to browse the judaica shop. Finding a place that sold Jewish items such as menorahs and head coverings, much less one that sold pretty ones was rare. It was practically her duty to look at the selection every time she encountered such a place. Shiloh had explained as such to her golem, Elliot, and he’d given her his equivalent of a sour look as wandered inside.
Just because she had a bad habit of buying things she didn’t need didn’t mean he had to be so grumpy about it.
This time, though, Shiloh had found something perfect for someone else. To the non-Jewish person, the item in her hands looked like a metal rod that had one rounded end attached to a chain, while the other end had the mold of a right hand with its index finger extended. To someone Jewish, what she held was a yad--a pointer tool usually used for reading the Torah without touching the sacred parchment--and a fancy one at that. The yad was bronze in color, with glittering orange beads (or perhaps rhinestones) spiraling from where the ‘wrist’ of the hand would be to the top of the bulb that held the chain.
She shifted her right hand to grasp hold of it more properly--using her right hand to model the one that sat at the end of the yad, keeping her own index finger on the body of the tool. It was a little big for her taste, but the person in Shiloh’s mind would love how it would fit into their bigger hands. Plus, she totally slipped in getting them a birthday present so finding something this nice would totally get them to stop bugging her about it. For a little bit, at least.
Her excitement lasted until she got a good look at the little paper price tag attached to the yad’s chain. She winced reflexively. “Of course something this perfect had a catch.” She muttered. Some quick mental math told Shiloh that spending that amount of money would put her in serious danger of not being able to cover rent. It wouldn’t be the first time that happened, but the landlord was getting really tired of late payments.
With the heaviest sigh she could muster, Shiloh set the yad back down among the others in the display. She stuffed her hands in her hoodie pockets as she made her way to the exit. Maybe I could win the lottery, she thought. Or sell some spells online. Plenty of other people make good money that way, right…?
It wasn’t until Elliot had grabbed her shoulder and pulled her roughly back that Shiloh realized that she’d nearly walked right into traffic while distracted. “Thanks, El.” She muttered. It was more of a reflex than a genuine statement. Hiking her shoulders further up, she continued walking down the street. Her golem followed dutifully.
“Perhaps you should consider taking up Catalpa’s offer of a smaller apartment.” Elliot suggested after a couple of minutes of silence. His monotone could be plainly heard despite the ongoing traffic noises. “I do not require an entire room to rest, and you have not been able to acquire enough furniture for the office you stated you wanted. He is certain to be willing to help with the process of moving.” There was no inflection to suggest such a thing, but the words indicated a level of concern for Shiloh’s well being. As usual, it was hard to tell if the care was out of his own volition, or if it was a subset of his role as a golem. Not that it really mattered to master and creation.
She sighed and ran a hand down the side of her face. “Except that I’d get too crowded in a one bedroom. Sure it’d help with my funds for a bit, but then what? Do I move out of there in a couple of years, only to find that I can’t pay again? I can’t do the moving dance forever you know.”
“Your mother and father--” Shiloh held up a hand behind her, stopping the statement before it could go any further.
“Not an option. I love them, I really do, but I’ve gotta be able to handle things on my own.” Her phone vibrated and she fished it out from her back pocket. “And the one person I’d want to room with travels too much for me to be comfortable signing a lease with them. Unless a miracle happens, I’m just shit out of luck, El.”
Her brow furrowed as she looked at the notification on her screen. It was a text from a number she didn’t recognize. Against her better judgement, she tapped the message and unlocked her phone. It read: “Hey, saw your ad for roommate? I don’t drink or do drugs and I don’t have a criminal record. I also keep to myself, so you don’t have to clean up after me. Can meet up at 11am Sunday to do face-to-face. Place of your choice. That good for you?”
Shiloh stopped in the middle of the sidewalk. Elliot stopped right behind her, which startled the person that had been walking behind the two of them. A satyr went around the golem’s massive bulk and gave a sneer before continuing on their way. Shiloh didn’t notice because she was frantically trying to figure out why some stranger was texting her about an ad. Did she put one together and she just didn’t remember it? Did someone do it for her? If so, how did they get her number and why are they acting on her behalf?
Elliot stared down at the phone’s screen. “It seems that the poster that you and Tessa made while you were intoxicated several weeks ago has finally gotten someone’s attention.” His voice was still the same tone, but Shiloh could swear that she detected some wry humor in it.
He was right, though: Tessa, her mermaid friend and neighbor had invited herself over for a New Year’s celebration--an excuse to get drunk without having to go to a party. She now could recall herself bemoaning her situation and Tessa providing a cold, damp shoulder to cry on. As if unraveling a sweater of memory, Shiloh now relived going from sobbing to putting together an advertisement to stumbling down to the lobby and tacking it up with the other requests from other residents.
Just this morning, she had been wondering what idiot could’ve made such a poorly put together ad for a roommate. Her cheeks flushed as she realized that her number was indeed on the poster itself. She hadn’t recognized it at all.
Her phone buzzed again. “You can ignore this if you’ve already got the roommate thing taken care of,” Read the new message.
On the one hand, this person probably was okay. They were polite enough to let Shiloh control where to meet in person. They also didn’t blow up her phone as soon as they’d gotten hold of her number, which was nice. The fact that they didn’t wait for her to reply spoke of a quiet desperation to find a place too, which could help her out in the end.
On the other hand, this was a stranger. Asking Shiloh to meet up in person. To discuss living with her. On a Sunday.
She very nearly texted back to say that it wasn’t going to work out when a thought occurred to her. “Ari’s supposed to be in town on Sunday, right?”
“Affirmative. They are returning from a business trip and should be available for you to visit before 11am.”
“It’s like you can read my mind.” Shiloh grinned as she texted the person where to meet her.
Luck might finally be turning in her favor.

27 July
It rained on and off for most of the night and was still lightly raining when we got up. Cian and Clare were first, they started the day with a quick game of badminton! Nia and Jay followed a little later. None of us had bothered taking our sleeping bags out last night based on the previous few days of sweat! Last night however it got cold enough for us to reach for our blankets. Somehow a choir group had amassed on site since last night and began practicing during breakfast. In contrast to last nights thunder, this a cappella group was a little bit of harmonising heaven! We packed up and (maybe even for the last time) said goodbye to the Avon campsite. First a visit to Aldi for lunch provision and then through Fontainbleu and then a general heading towards the south west. We knew we needed to put a few miles beneath us. We also knew we were about to drive through chateau county. Clare did the research, Jay drove, Nia and Cian read books. Clare found our fairytale chateau (we are only going to visit one): Chateaux de Sully-sur-Loire. A few miles deviation meant that we got to see one of the most impressive fortified buildings in the area. Along the route we passed through some beautifully quaint villages and amazing arable farmland. Acres of crops; sugar cane and sunflowers also huge barrels of straw. We pulled over at a massive field of sunflowers and took photos whilst weaving through the freaky flowers and the zillions of bees they were attracting. We also used this as a lunch stop. Jay decided to investigate a squeak that had recently materialised in the lower driver side engine bay. He discovered disaster. A break in the steel bodywork forming the lower section of the suspension turret. The split had separated the sections by about 1cm all around the engine bay. It looked pretty bad. It was pretty bad. The metal above and below the separation broke away in rusty clumps. This was terminal, the welding job to fix this was well beyond the vehicle price. A guy pulled up and asked if we were OK, he looked where Jay pointed under the wheel arch and told us "Bonne chance. Vous avez un grande problème." We ate lunch. Then drove to the chateaux. The chateau was fabulous from the approach. It really was a kind of Disney castle. There was a moat. The moat had shoals of tadpoles. Millions of them. Swirling like underwater tornadoes. We were sold. As many attractions, the entrance and exit were through the gift shop. But even this was exuberant - you could buy a 3 inch plastic knight for 10€! We were in touristville but tolerating it! The building was over 600 yrs old. It had sustained damage during WWII and had been restored and redesigned numerous times. The current decor told a story of the middle aegis to 19th century; both its defensive and pompous stature. The rooms were grand and the architecture amazing (the same guy worked on Notre Dame and the Louvre Palace). The carpentry was unbelievable - 3/4 of the oak roof was original (the replacement only required due to bomb damage). We wandered around the chateaux enjoying the grandeur of the four poster beds and tapestries and then stared down at the moat through murder holes. We reckon this was a good choice to visit. Back at the van we had a look for a parking spot and drove around 6 miles to a car park on the banks of the Loire. Fishermen were in the midst of a large competition and managed to catch a few smaller fish while we were there. Another group of fellas we playing boule on a dusty part of the track. It felt quite nice but a number of the reviews suggested that it got noisy at night with locals on nights out and lads racing on motorbikes. It felt pretty peaceful but it was Saturday and the evening had not yet started. We decided to go elsewhere. We found a municipal campsite at Sainr Benoit-sur-Loire. The pitches were among old woodland along the river. There were only a few other campers and everyone was well spread out. It felt perfect. We chose our spot and swiftly had a session of badminton before setting up the slackline. This time the line was almost at full length; the swing and bounce in the middle made it crazy difficult - none of us managed it, but also none of us hurt ourselves! We practiced and practiced - some improvements we think. Dinner prompted the discussion about our van predicament. We had briefly called into a garage which happened to be closed, but there was a guy working on his motorbike. He did not speak English and our French was not up to this but he was a mechanic. Jay showed him the crack / rust and used Google translate to find out if we could still drive it. He seemed confident that we should be OK for a while if we took it slowly. Therefore three choices seemed available to us: 1. call RAC on Monday and get back to UK thereafter; 2. Set off to drive back to the UK hoping to avoid RAC hassle Or; 3. Continue and see if situation gets worse before bailing out. We shared our thoughts with each other but did not settle on a decision. We like this campsite and will stay here at least another night. We have time to consider the options and make a decision. For now it was time for chocolate and Chinese checkers! By the time games had finished it was dark and almost 2300hr. Teeth, book, sleep.

In which a temporary team is formed
Tumblr media
First: In which the human is transformed Next: In which they finish building a house Previous: In which they go to the kangaskhan’s home
In the morning, the group enjoyed a quick breakfast with Kangaskhan, who had to get up early for her job, before heading back to Pokemon Square to complete some missions. When they stopped by the mission board, they were reminded that Peaky still wanted to show them those wanted posters that Team Meanies had made up, so they decided to make a quick stop there, now that business at the post office had slowed down mostly to normality.
However, for once Peaky wasn’t available to speak with them, so they decided that they would have to return later. Luckily, Alex’s badge had arrived, so the stop wasn’t pointless. His badge had a similar appearance to Keahi and Nelvana’s, however smaller than theirs. He cheerfully pinned it onto the bag, as he lacked an accessory like the leading pair, and off they went.
There were still a few dungeons left to show Tsuki, and there ended up being enough jobs for those locations to take up the morning. They returned to Pokemon Square early, and enjoyed a simple picnic lunch before trying to check back in at the Pelipper Post Office. This time, Peaky was chatting with a pidgeotto behind the counter. They looked up at the sound of the quartet entering, and Peaky hopped over to greet them.
“Hey Team Galaxy! You here to send a letter?” Peaky chirped.
“Actually, we were hoping to see those posters you mentioned a couple days ago,” Keahi told them.
“Oh! Right! Here, I’ll grab one!” Peaky exclaimed, scurrying back behind the counter. “Each copy looks different, I think that they drew each one individually!” they added, “ah! Here we are!” Peaky hopped back over to the team, laying down a large paper in front of them.
Across the top of the page written “WANTED” in letters so big that there wasn’t enough room, and it had to be squeezed together to have the entire word. Underneath, written slightly more properly, was “Team Galaxy: Dead or Alive,” which made Nelvana take in an uneasy gulp of breath as she silently read it. Below all the text, were three poorly done drawings of Keahi, Nelvana, and Alex respectively. Whichever of the Team Meanies members had drawn up this particular poster seemed to have had a lot of difficulty with Keahi’s beak and Nelvana’s skull, the former ending up as just a triangle, and the latter being practically a spiky ball surrounded by pencil smudges.
“Huh, they forgot to write down the reward for catching us,” Alex commented, “I guess we’re priceless,” he joked.
Nelvana snickered, her tension at the text melting away the longer she looked at the drawings, “I have to give them some credit on my portrait, cubone skulls are challenging to get the hang of drawing,” she said, “that doesn’t excuse Alex’s nose though. At least they remembered your scar.”
“Yeah, but they forgot where! Why did they draw it through my eye?” Alex responded.
“I guess it looks more intimidating?” Nelvana suggested, “I think you really scared Gengar. Plus, they all had to draw from memory. And the one he could base off, he was probably more focused on finding more excuses.”
Keahi giggled, “they drew one of my eyes bigger than the other! And look at the feathers! They’re practically just one big mound!”
“I wonder if they’re just bad at drawing, or if they needed reference?” Nelvana asked no on in particular.
“I guess we’ll never know,” Alex answered, stepping back from the poster to signal that he was finished looking.
“Perhaps they should have taken art lessons from you, Nel,” Tsuki suggested, “then again, there is still the matter of whether you’d even give lessons.”
“Uhh, I don’t consider myself a good enough teacher to give lessons to anyone,” Nelvana murmured.
“Thanks for letting us see this anyway, Peaky!” Keahi chirped.
“No problem! Now I guess all of us should get to work, shouldn’t we? See you guys later!” Peaky replied.
The spearow fluttered back to the pidgeotto, who was patiently waiting for their return, and Team Galaxy turned and left the office. They went back home, and watched Nelvana doodled in the dirt while they waited for the others to arrive so they could get started.
Wynaut and Wobbuffet were punctual, arriving at noon, excited to get to work and help out the silver-ranked rescue team with their base. It was another ten minutes before the mankeys arrived, but they had reluctantly brought Primeape with them. It turned out that she had forcefully come along to assist with the basics, certain that everyone just needed a better push to get started than the next to no experience most of them had. She had modified their notes, and went ahead and put an order for all the supplies, which left Team Galaxy in a mix of thankfulness, and bitterness at their work being discarded so easily, when they had thought that they had a better grasp on all of this.
The materials wouldn’t arrive until the next day, but fortunately there was still work to be done. They had to prepare the land for building a new base, which mainly meant that they had to get rid of the old one. By breaking it apart. It was sad to have to destroy their old home, but knowing that they would build a better one kept their spirits up, and it helped release some tension. Wynaut and Wobbuffet weren’t able to help terribly much, but the mankeys enjoyed themselves in the destruction. Primeape simply continued supervising everyone, over calling out a comment or critique every so often, much to the displeasure of Team Galaxy, especially since the fighting-type wasn’t actually assisting with the manual labor.
With the area cleared out, they were left with no way to progress until the supplies arrived, and so everyone left for the day. Team Galaxy ended up having enough time to complete a few more missions before heading back to the cottage with Kangaskhan, enjoying another evening with the normal-type family.
It was the next morning that they spotted a new arrival in Pokemon Square; Shiftry. The older grass-dark-type was brooding off to the side of town, and surprising, Lombre was standing beside him. They appeared to be speaking to each other, but it was being done much too quietly to be heard by bystanders.
“Shiftry? He’s back? And there’s Lombre too?” Keahi whispered.
    “Who’s Shiftry?” Tsuki asked.
“He…” Keahi trailed off, “He was the nuzleaves’ team leader.”
“Ah,” Tsuki murmured, “do you know him well?”
“No, we only watched his team accept Jumpluff’s mission,” Nelvana answered quietly, tracing the cracks on her club as she recalled the event.
Despite them staying quiet, it didn’t take long for Shiftry to look up and notice the team. Lombre looked over as well, and stiffened upon seeing them. He was about to sneak away, but Shiftry dragged the grass-water-type over to the quartet.
“Hello Team Galaxy,” Shiftry greeted somberly.
“H-Hey,” Lombre mumbled, struggling against Shiftry in a way to try not to make it obvious what he was doing, but failing in all forms.
“Hi guys!” Keahi greeted, “we… we haven’t seen either of you in awhile, how are you?”
“I’ve… been managing,” Shiftry sighed, “look, I just wanted to thank you guys. For everything. You rescued me from Zapdos, and while you couldn’t rescue my teammates… you brought that damned murder to justice. So, thank you for that.”
“Oh, uh, no problem!” Keahi replied, “look, we…”
Shiftry shook his head, “look, don’t worry about it. I just want to move on, alright? Just needed to give you your thanks first. You deserve it.”
“Okay,” Keahi sighed, “so, you’re staying here now?”
“For now.” Shiftry nodded. “Anyway, this lil’ frog has something to say too,” he continued, shoving Lombre at them.
“Ack!” Lombre croaked, stumbling forward. “Geez, you don’t need to be so rough…” he huffed, brushing off his arms before turning back to Team Galaxy and stiffening again. “Shoot…”
Shiftry glowered down at Lombre, who was looking more uncomfortable by the minute.
“F-Fine!” Lombre hissed, “I’m sorry for distrusting you like that! And for almost joining Team Meanies to hunt you down! And for… and I really messed up, didn’t I? I’m sorry.”
Keahi smiled warmly at Lombre, “it’s alright. You messed up, but we forgive you.”
“Would have been nice to not have you be so reluctant about apologizing though,” Alex mumbled.
“He’s just a wimp,” Shiftry chuckled, harshly nudging Lombre.
“Yeah, yeah. Can I go now?” Lombre sighed.
“Sure, go ahead, frog,” Shiftry hummed.
Just as he said, Shiftry stuck around Pokemon Square during the next few days. He continued avoiding most of the townsfolk, but would give Team Galaxy a wave as they went by, and sometimes they would see him chatting with the kecleon brothers.
Construction continued as well, the supplies arriving on time to the Kecleon Shop for further work. Primeape kept coming with the mankeys to contribute with her advice, and by the end of the day, was actually helping with the work instead of sitting on the sidelines. It was a new, challenging, and long job, but they all found themselves enjoying their first few days of working.
It was the fourth day that brought more change. Arriving in Pokemon Square with Kangaskhan that morning greeted them with a large crowd in the center of town with many unfamiliar pokemon.
“Woah, that’s a big crowd. Wonder what’s happening this time?” Keahi gasped, “hey look! Those guys have badges! And so do they! And… is everyone here part of a team?” zie continued.
“Look, there’s Team New Blooms, let’s go ask them,” Nelvana suggested, pointing over to the familiar chikorita and machop.
The quartet weaved their way around the crowd towards the pair, who were standing beside a piplup and chimchar wearing matching scarves around their necks.
“Oh, hey Galaxy!” Melanie greeted, “you’re late!”
    “Late for what?” Keahi asked.
“We… we don’t know,” Everett admitted, “Shiftry sent out letters to every team asking us to meet here yesterday, but didn’t specify why.”
“Yeah, didn’t you guys get one?” Melanie questioned.
“No… but that might be because we don’t have a mailbox right now. We’re rebuilding,” Nelvana told them.
“Ah! That explains it!” Everett chirped, “anyway, this is Team Disaster! We started talking while we were waiting for Shiftry to get this meeting started,” he added, acknowledging the other duo.
“Hello! I’m Cecil, and this is my partner Poplar,” the chimchar said.
“Hey there,” Poplar huffed, crossing her flippers across her chest. “Let’s hope this starts soon, this is boring.”
“Be patient Poplar…” Cecil sighed, not looking to pleased to be waiting so long himself.
As if on cue, Shiftry began speaking, “alright everyone! Quiet down!” he yelled, and waited until the huge group went quiet. “Look, I know you’re all antsy and confused, so I’ll do my best to be quick, alright?” he continued, “I don’t like giving public speeches much anyway,” he added under his breath. “Team A.C.T. left to fight Groudon nearly a week ago, and no one has heard from them since!”
The crowd began whispered amongst one another again, and Shiftry waited for everyone to calm down again before continuing.
“So, this probably means they got stuck, and their badges malfunctioned. And I refuse to leave them there a moment longer! Which means we have to send out a team to rescue them! That’s why you’re all here! I sent letters out to every team that’s a silver or gold rank in hopes that we can combine forces for a search team,” Shiftry explained, “since clearly, as none of us have been able to achieve platinum rank on our own, there is no way just sending one team will be successful. I suggest that the stronger among us to face the perils of Magma Cavern, where Groudon resides. Any volunteers?”
This final question was met by silence for the first few seconds, filling the air with a tense silence, everyone wondering who would volunteer to go into the dungeon that the highest ranked team hadn’t returned from.
“Maybe we should go!” Keahi whispered to zir teammates.
“We should…” Nelvana agreed, but hesitated.
“What about the base?” Tsuki pointed out.
Keahi scrunched up zir face, “oh right… this feels more important though.”
“Look, if no one else volunteers, then we will, alright?” Nelvana offered.
    “Okay,” Keahi nodded.
    “I’ll go.”
A large blastoise wearing a striped green bandanna on his head walked from out of the crowd, and up to Shiftry.
“Magma Cavern sounds like there will be a lot of fire-types, and my water-type attacks will blast right through them!” Blastoise proclaimed.
With first volunteer, the ice seemed to be broken for others to join in this make-shift team as well.
“Very well, I’ll help out too,” Octillery, who wore a lavender sash around her neck, announced. “You’ll need the extra strength here, sweetheart,” she purred.
“Me too!” Golem, one of the few in the crowd with no accessory, called out. “We can’t only send in water-types! My rock and ground moves will shake up those caverns!” he boasted.
“Two waters and a rock-ground…” Nelvana murmured, “but… Groudon is a ground-type with drought. This won’t be enough to beat them if we’re just going off of type, which seems to be what they think they’re focusing on.”
Alex blinked, “you’re right… should we tell them? We should, shouldn’t we…”
Nelvana bit her lip, but nodded. With a glance back at their teammates, along with Team New Bloom and Team Disaster, they took a step further into the crowd.
“Hey, just a warning, Groudon is a ground-type with drought! Are you sure this is the plan you want to go with?” Alex yelled.
Everyone turned towards the pair, causing both of them to stiffen uncomfortably from being stared at. Keahi and Tsuki quickly joined them, Keahi leaning close beside Nelvana to comfort her.
“Knew it was a ground-type, but drought, huh? Where did you hear that?” Blastoise questioned.
“Ditto,” Nelvana answered courtly before Alex could.
Blastoise blinked in surprise, but Octillery chimed in, “don’t you kids worry about it. We shouldn’t have to fight Groudon, this is just a search mission. We just need to get through the dungeon, which will have fire-types,” she told them.
“Thanks for the tip though!” Golem added, “I think we’ve got this though!”
“Anyone else, then?” Shiftry asked, his eyes lingering on Team Galaxy for a moment as he scanned the crowd, before passing them by.
“I think we can take this! Feeling pretty confident about this mission!” Blastoise exclaimed.
“We should name our team, for good luck!” Golem announced.
“Boys… I don’t think we have time for that,” Octillery sighed.
Shiftry coughed, “you three can decide that on your own. If no one else wants to join them, then meeting dismissed, I suppose.”
Eagerly taking the chance to do their own thing, nearly all the teams departed, many of them to the Pelipper Post Office, and the rest out of town. Team Galaxy and a couple others lingered around the center of Pokemon Square, whispering to one another. Shiftry left the temporary team and walked up to the quartet.
“I’m surprised you guys didn’t volunteer,” Shiftry commented.
“No offense, but it might be for the better,” Blastoise, rudely barging into a beginning conversation that wasn’t his, said. “Look, Team Galaxy, you may have been through that path and beaten the bird trio, but Groudon is an entirely different story. We’re more experienced, we can handle this.”
Shiftry growled, rolling his eyes at Blastoise’s comment before turning and leaving towards Whiscash Pond. Octillery and Golem, along with their actual teams, who were the other few lingerers, waved Blastoise back over to them, leaving Team Galaxy along.
“Jeez, what a jerk,” Alex snapped, glowering at Blastoise. “Ditto though? Good excuse, helps keep us from explaining a lot.”
    “It wasn’t a ditto? I can’t remember…” Nelvana murmured.
“Nah, it was an illusion. Ditto worked better as a quick answer though,” Alex replied.
“Wait, you guys fought Groudon before?” Keahi questioned, zir beak gaping open in surprise.
“Not the real one, but yes,” Alex answered.
“…I… have a bad feeling about this search mission,” Nelvana admitted.
“Me too,” Tsuki agreed, “but it isn’t me sensing it yet, so we’ll have to see how this turns out. Hopefully it just stays as a bad feeling.”

Tyrys Week, day 2: Comfort And Confessions
One hour to the end of today and I finally got time to post this chapter, this week is gonna be wild
Tj was shaking on his way to the swings that Monday afternoon. He was going to travel to out of the country for a two-month vacation at his aunt Sheyla's house in Scotland and was debating with himself if he should come out to Cyrus during a near future (possibly), which lead him to the swings, the best option to lay out some stress without all the sweat of the basketball hoop behind his house.
While making his way to the park, tj remembered all the times he had come out that year.
--
01
After his last game of basketball playing for Jefferson middle, tj and his parents went home for a rare homemade dinner, an event kept only for special occasions where tj and his parents would cook together some meal and chat for the whole time. Tj thought that was maybe the best moment he would get any time soon to come out to his parents, so right after they finished layering the lasagna and shoved it up on the oven, he started talking.
“Mom, dad” he stole their attention from their wine bottle, both looked attentively to their nervous son. “I… I have something I need to tell you” Tj stuttered but still looked them in the eyes.
“What is it Ty?” his mom asked with her soft voice, her simple clothes still a little wrinkled from dressing too quickly after her hospital shift to be at her son’s game on time,  her soft blond hair, a tone lighter than Tj’s own, fell at her shoulders with light curls and her green eyes that contrasted beautifully with her faintly tanned skin full of worry.
The basketball player looked at his father, an older version of himself, only with red hair and a full beard, his paler face exhibited the same concern his wife, they love me enough to be worried Tj said to himself internally I can do it.
Taking a deep gulp of air, he looked at his parent's eyes and left forgotten his prepared speech to a short and simple sentence “I'm pansexual” he said as he closed his eyes, not ready to recognize the rejection on his parent's faces.
“Ty,” his father’s voice called him after a couple seconds, he opened his eyes to see their faces full of confusion and another expression he could not exactly pinpoint confused “as much as I would like to say I fully support you” Tj’s heart beat so loud he almost didn’t listen to the end of his father’s sentence “but I think neither me nor your mom could say that without lying to you, since we both don’t have idea of what does that term means” he finished with an understanding expression, almost as he was hurting for not being able to fully support his child in this particular moment as much as he did on every other aspect of his life (including the discovery of his dyscalculia).
His mom seemed to feel the same, as she took a hold of Tj’s hand placed over the table, thumb softly massaging the back of it to assure her son that they meant no harm to him at any moment, only looking to comprehend what he was telling them. Fuck he thought again, exhaling the air stuck in his lungs for the last minute or so I'm so lucky to have them supporting and trying to understand me he then remembered daniel’s words about his family’s views on sexuality and got a little sad for the boy.
“I am pansexual,” he started, oh so much calmer now that his parents weren't going to get mad at him for being himself “ and being pansexual means I’m attracted to a person, no matter their gender identity.” His parents still seemed confused at that explanation “ This means that I can love either a boy, a girl, a person that is both or a person that is neither of those things” his parents looked less confused now, but his mom started crying and got up from her seat to hug Tj. His dad also hugged him, making all of them part of a family hug completed with sobs and wet tears from all three of the Kippens.
Suddenly a loud pig came from the stove, the warning that their dinner was ready, they were quick to separate from the hug and settle the table for the meal, their usual rhythm coming back as his mom cracked jokes and his father told them about his latest project on the firm he worked.
“So you guys are not mad at me?” Tj asked after a few minutes of eating his second portion of lasagna (his parents were indeed really good cooks), mouth still full of the delicious treat. His parents looked at him as if he had grown another head on his arm all of the sudden.
“Why would we be mad at you, ty?” his mom asked, taking a sip of her glass of wine to wash down the food she just swallowed.
“You know because I’m not straight?” he said a little lower “There’s this kid at school, he’s gay, and his parents didn’t fully accept it…”
“Oh baby, I so deeply sorry for your friend, but we want you to know we fully support you, even though we may need a few days to search more about the LGBT community.” His mom answered him.
“And we’re actually kind of ashamed, we didn’t know we were raising you in such a way you felt uncertain of our reaction to this subject, and if you ever felt pressurized to be something you aren’t, we are profoundly sorry for it.”
“And I'm sorry for you to even consider this wrong, how could I feel anything other than pride for my baby boy being able to love someone without restrictions?”
Tj smiled despite the squeezing feeling at his chest, he was so relieved he had understanding parents that loved and encouraged him that much
--
02
Tj never really came out during his first year of high school, he didn’t announce it publically with a megaphone, at the sound of born this way from lady gaga, and a rainbow parade complete with pink glitter in the middle of the cafeteria. It actually when pretty non-climatic to be honest.
He had just entered (after much work and dedication) the basketball team, being the only freshman to play court, so, as per usual on this situations, he got to be a little bit of a celebrity among his peers, being given high fives from random people at the halls, invited to parties at houses he didn't know the owner and girls asked him out almost every week.
So it wasn’t a surprise when his older teammates came near him at his locker during his interval between biology and history (both his favorite subjects, since he couldn’t choose between them both) and took a view of the inside of that said locker, where Tj had put up a small Panic! At The Disco poster (he got really into it since that day), sided by his class schedule, a note from Cyrus wishing him good lock on his high school journey and a small pansexual flag with the words ‘love is love’ written on it.
“YO KIPPENSTER!” called his team captain, Carlos, came accompanied by two other players- Alex and Leo – and the three seniors stopped behind him, hands on his shoulder in a sort of rough massage as Tj replaced his books for the next period.
“My man, why is there a random flag with that girly shit written in it?” asked Leo in a friendly mockery. Tj didn’t even look at them as he responded with half a mind
“That’s the pansexual flag. As in attracted to any gender or biological sex, as in my flag” and realizing what he just blurted out without a care in the world he dreaded himself for if those were panphobic shitheads he, without a doubt, might as well without a doubt he be throwing out all his hard work in the nearest trash can available.
“Oh, okay.” He heard his mates answer and the following “We don’t really give a fuck to who you fuck as long as you keep playing like you did yesterday. And talking about fucking, you going to Thalissa's party this weekend? You have to get laid man!”
--
And that was that up until now he had come out without any problematic consequences, his parents had gotten more involved with lgbtqa rights and his teammates only tried to join him with their friend and random people until they caught him smiling dumbly to his phone after a long practice and none other but forced him to confess his crush on Cyrus and proceded to tease him lightly every time Cyrus went to watch a game at  high school.
However, none of that mattered in sight of telling Cyrus about his crush on him.
Tj was really close to the swings the moment he identified the hunched up form of his friend (and object of his affection), Cyrus goodman.
“Hey, underdog!” he called as he got closer to the set of swings he knew all too well by now.
“Oh hey Tj!” the smaller boy greeted him with a visible lack of enthusiasm.
“What you swinging for?” he asked the now common question between them
“You are probably gonna think I'm stupid for it,” the Jewish boy said looking down at his black sneakers.
“After all this time you still think the worst of me, underdog?” Tj joked as a way of telling the boy he was safe “is that what you take from our relationship till now?” he said and cursed at himself internally, his mouth needed a better filter or else he would just keep coming out to people without the intention to do so and one day he would get himself in a bad situation, just as this one, he thought.
Cyrus, however, didn’t seem phased by the sentence, more worried about his actual problem than overanalyzing his friends choice of words. He sighed and seemed to accept his fate as to tell Tj his problems, the basketball player sat beside the boy on the other swing.
“Take your time” he tried to lift a little bit of the obvious pressure on the other boy's shoulders. Cyrus seemed to take the advice to heart as they sat there in a pregnant silence for almost five minutes.
“I'm afraid of going to high school” he blurted just as Tj thought this subject would just be classified as more of their ‘stuff’ and never spoken about again Tj face frowned in confusion.
“What are you talking about,” he said with light a voice “we’re going to study at the same school again,” he could not control his smile nor the butterflies on his stomach at the mere thought of being able to see Cyrus every day at school again “what would be there to be afraid? You’ll miss Slayer too much?” he joked
Cyrus seemed torn between happiness at the prospect of studying with Tj again and almost desperate by whatever else he was feeling.
“Tj, I'm not afraid of going to a different school from Buffy, I mean, I’ll still have andi and we’re still gonna go out together…” he affirmed with confidence “I'm afraid because I AM different” at Tj’s utter confusion he forced himself to say the words that still sounded too heavy at his own tongue “Tj, I’m gay”
Tj’s heart sank to his stomach, beat faster than ever before and not beat at all, all at the same time at what those words implied. He had a chance, the slightest that it was, it was still bigger and better than what he had imagined.
“Underdog, I can assure you no one gives a shit about your sexuality in high school,” he said, and then realizing how he had sounded he tried to fix his words “I mean, people won't treat you different just for that, I won't treat you any different” Cyrus seemed relieved, but then his anxiety came back with more doubts at his head.
“How can you be so sure?” he inquired from the older boy “ How can you affirm to me that I won't be made fun of or beaten or anything like that?” he grew even more anxious with every word, as well as did Tj, but for completely different reasons.
“I can be one hundred percent honest with you because” his throat felt drier than sandpaper, his hands sweeter than a fat kid on the line to the last McDonald’s burger ever. It felt like he was Lúcifer going to confess his sins to God himself (mental note, don’t read paradise lost after ten pm, or else you’ll end up making more religious comparisons). “I can tell that because I'm not quite straight and I haven't suffered any major bullying during this whole year”
Cyrus stared at him with a blank face, now completely calm all of a sudden “So let me get this right,” he started with a monotone tone to his voice “you are gay”
“Pansexual actually” the blonde boy interrupted.
“So you’re pansexual” Cyrus's voice acquired a heavier, more full of anger tone at every word “and you’ve been out to strangers for a whole year” he was now nearly shouting but contained himself “but to me, ‘one of your best friends’” he made quotes on air “you chose not to say a word?”
“Yes?” Tj said nor sure if he was supposed to be feeling bad or angry about what Cyrus was telling him. But then, before he could weight his options fully, Cyrus made something I've never seen before coming from the boy.
“Fuck!” Cyrus cursed, leaving Tj astonished “Oh my god, Tj, I’m such a shitty friend, ugh, I made you somehow feel like you couldn’t come to me and talk about it unintentionally, haven't I?” he started to beat himself up, that made the taller boy’s heart feel tight on his chest.
“No, Underdog, it's not like that.” He calmed the boy, holding his hands to stop him on his over the top sequence of gestures, it’s now or never. C’mon men, you can do it. Tell him how you feel!  “I didn’t say anything before because, because I…” that moment, Cyrus phone started to ring.
Looking apologetically to Tj, Cyrus got up from the swing set and answered the call. Tj only waited, knowing full well that Cyrus’ parents only called him on emergencies, preferring not to disturb their son during the day if not for something important.
Minutes later the brown-haired boy was back in front of Tj, biding his goodbyes and walking home, Tj and his reasons forgotten in midst of whatever his parents told him that left him in a near catatonic state. Tj watched him run home as his own cellphone ringed in his sweats’ pockets, most probably his mom calling him home so they could travel.
--
Cyrus arrived home were his two pairs of parents waited for him, having already come out to them not long ago made him feel lighter around them and allowed him to act more instinctively by their side.
He couldn’t believe when his dad told him on the phone, still processing the news ‘you’re gonna be a big brother’. But in his living room, he found his mom and stepmom both talking and touching their bellies in a protective way.
He was never happier than that afternoon, receiving the news of two babies on their way, commemorating until late with his family, he only remembered to tell his friends after he got up to his bedroom, too tired to keep partying on the first floor.
He sent a text to buffy and andi marking to see them the next day to share the news and was ready to send Tj the same text when he saw he had a voicemail from a said basketball player. curious, he made his phone play it.
“Hey, Underdog,” Tj’s voice sounded clear through the speaker “it’s me, obviously. I hope everything is okay with your parents” Cyrus smiled at the kind gesture  “I'm calling to give you a heads up that I'm leaving the country for two months since I’m gonna visit my aunt in Scotland…” he felt his heart sink a little, his best friend was going to leave for two whole months.
“about earlier, I'm sorry. I'm sorry that I was such a coward and didn’t tell you before, I'm so, so sorry.” He felt bad for Tj, the blond’s voice sounded strangled from emotion “I guess I thought you would see me in a different way if I’ve told you, or maybe you would realize how obvious I am” Tj let out a sad chuckle and Cyrus got even more confused at that exclamation.
“ you know, I wanted to do it face to face, but I guess this way you can have time to think about it  better without me around, you can decide how to act when I come back, if you want to keep things as they are…” there was a loud sigh from Tj, Cyrus could hear the sound of running water in the background now, as well as some voices  “so this is my admission of guilt. Fuck, am I really doing this at an airport’s bathroom? I'm so fucked up…” he almost laughed if not for the serious subject of the (one-sided) conversation.
“This is me confessing my crush on you. A crush that lasts for over a year now and just grew stronger, even though I tried to find other people to like, or trying to find reasons to not like you as more than a friend.” All air from Cyrus' lungs was knocked out at the impact of that confession. Tj has a crush on me he thought to himself, unable to do any other thing than just stare blankly at his phone, the only current source of light in his dark bedroom.
“As I said before, from now on the choice is yours, you chose if we should not be friends anymore, or be just friends or if you want to try and be more than that, cause I will follow whatever path you chose, no contestations. I'm not gonna contact you during this months to give you the time to sort things out within yourself. I'm sorry for the sudden bomb I just threw on you…Just,” his voice sounded painful and closer than ever to tearing up “I'm gonna miss you during this two months… goodbye Cyrus”

FINAL TALE SEVEN: Part 1
As the night begins to fall, a story echoes throughout the cosmos of a forsaken planet and of their precious, yet unruly people.
On that planet, there lived of two races that were forever in harmony: Humans…. And Monsters… Each intermingled and created magnificent structures that gave life to their kind. Humans and Monsters had their differences, but often overcame them and reunited with stronger and more powerful resolves…
One day, a corporation that provided seemingly limitless amounts of power across the world sprung into existence. That corporation was named, The CORE Company. The CORE rose after their creation of DETERMINATION Reactors that soon flowered across the land and giving many jobs and easy access to energy for homes and jobs.
The CORE Company soon created their own military, called The GUARD. A person skyrocketed through the ranks, becoming the international poster person of strength and intelligence. That person was every child’s hero. Their hopes and dreams… But, on a fateful mission, they vanished without a trace and was soon forgotten.
The CORE soon began to wreak havoc on the people that they swore to provide for and began to become manipulative and greedy. A resistance soon arose, being dubbed the fitting name of the DELTA ANGELS, and began to fight to destroy every reactor that was sprouted across the land as they heard the planet’s cries. Those very reactors were sapping the very life out of the planet’s SOUL.
At the head of the DELTA ANGELS was Undyne Wallace, a Monster of fierce willpower and a spear-loaded right arm that struck fear into the SOULs of The CORE Company. Her growing forces began to take down reactors, one by one, and left only 3 with in The CITY. Undyne could march in, arm in her hand, and could cause GUARD members to quake in their boots.
Although, she required a lick of assistance from an old friend’s child, for that the reactor that she aimed to take down was heavily guarded due to her resistance force making The CITY lose power. That child’s name was Chara Strife, an Ex-GUARD soldier that far excelled all but one soldier and carried a strikingly red and enchanted blade on their back. Chara had no sense of remorse for The CORE, but lacked the passion for the planet and its people. Undyne saw this and began to put in efforts to change Chara’s mindset to, hopefully, get them on her and her DELTA ANGELS’ side.
….
Chara leapt out from a racing resistance truck, as they began their first paid task from the DELTA ANGELS, and looked up at the hauntingly familiar reactor with a look of disdain. They glanced back down at the entrance and began to walk forward with light and swift steps.
Chara wore a repurposed GUARD uniform; A dark, forest green and sleeveless turtleneck, a steel shoulderpad on their left shoulder, a dark leather and steel holster around their waist and over their shoulders with their signature blade attached to their back, a pair of mismatched dark leather and steel gauntlets, dark, forest green pants, and a pair of heavy military boots. Their hair seemed to originally have been a military cut as their bangs were a bit long and parted to the sides to the side locks. Their hair was a bit tousled from the ride and a rather odd lock of hair curled and stood on top of their head. Their face appeared to be in a permanent scowl with rosy cheeks and a bit of scarring from scuffles they had gotten into. Their eyes were a deep, true red hue that softly glowed in the darkness of the reactor field.
A pair of GUARD troops marched forth as they pointed their guns at Chara. They sighed softly as they charged towards the pair with their right hand on their blade and drew the massive sword from their back with a spark of red magic having released the blade. The soldiers gasped and began to shoot at them, but failed to land a single hit as they dodged effortlessly. Chara slashed right through the closest soldier’s torso as a spray of blood spewed out and caused the other to run away in fear.
“…A pair of human soldiers. How amusing… And disgusting.” mumbled Chara, a sense of hatred traced their words, and they placed their TRUE BLADE right back onto their back with a loud snap and a red spark.
They began to march towards the reactor with a quick stride, as they wished to not waste time with this mission.
They soon were halted by the DELTA ANGELS’ leader herself, their scowl having become a touch darker. Undyne gave a cheeky grin as she soon spoke,
“Heya, punk! Are you prepared to get your hair singed from a reactor explosion?!” Her voice boomed, despite being a bit quieter than her usual shouts.
Undyne was a sleek, blue scaled Monster with slightly orange, red hair and webbings. Her eyes were a lively yellow with wide slitted pupils as her teeth were exposed to the air and were the same colour as her eyes. She wore a leather jacket that she had torn the sleeves off of, a thick metal tunic around her torso that appeared bolted(?) onto her body, a pair of dog tags hung from her neck, a hefty, black belt around her waist, a pair of dark green pants, and a pair of lightly tanned hide boots to match her single hide glove that was accented by a metal bangle. Her right arm was geared with a thick barrel that split off into four, smaller barrels that lightly glowed a teal hue inside of the tubes.
Tumblr media
“…I highly doubt that there will be any singeing of any person’s hair with my presence here,” retorted the Human as they tried to walk pass Undyne, only to be stopped with her hand on their chest. “…Punk…. I mean, Chara… I’m not trying to be rude or anything, but can you cut the crap? I know you’ve been through a lot ever since they left and abandoned you, but I’m your friend. I’ve asked for your help cause I trust–”
“Trust should not be flung and given away with such vigour. You will only end up becoming a tool to others, Wallace.” They snapped with venom in their voice and slapped Undyne’s hand away as they walked through the gate with a hastened pace. Undyne gave a loud sigh as she closed her eyes and rubbed her neck before racing after Chara.

WordPress Block Editor: The Ultimate Gutenberg Guide (2019)
Tumblr media
Here’s the deal:
If you’re new to the WordPress block editor, or if you’re looking for an easy-to-read resource you can reference as needed, you’ve come to the right place.
In this post, we’re going to walk you through the ins and outs of the block editor (aka “Gutenberg”) — what it is, how it differs from the classic editor, and how to use it.
Let’s jump in.
WordPress Block Editor (Gutenberg) Overview
What is the Gutenberg Editor?
When WordPress 5.0 was released in December 2018, the world was introduced to the Gutenberg editor — now known as the WordPress block editor.
Gone was the classic, TinyMCE WordPress editor. In its place was a modern, drag-and-drop block editor offering an entirely new content creation experience.
Drag and drop in action
In short, Gutenberg is a total revamp of the WordPress editor.
Using “blocks”, users of all experience levels can build custom posts and pages — without having to use third-party tools and plugins, and without having to know how to code.
What is a Content Block in WordPress?
Blocks are the vessels for your content.
With blocks, you can insert, rearrange, and style content in WordPress. What types of content? Here’s a small sampling (we’ll go over all of them later):
Tables
Images
Videos
Paragraphs
Quotes
Shortcodes
Social media (YouTube, Facebook, etc.) embeds
Widgets
Basically, anything you can reasonably imagine adding to a blog post or article can be added using blocks.
And you can add them faster and easier.
How is the WordPress Block Editor Different than the Classic Editor?
Here’s a quick side-by-side comparison.
First, the classic TinyMCE content editor:
Tumblr media
Next, the new “Gutenberg” block editor:
Tumblr media
The classic editor is reminiscent of Microsoft Word. There’s a place to write your text, and there’s a formatting toolbar to style your content (bold, italics, etc.).
The new editor uses a block system for content creation. Besides looking more polished and modern, the WordPress block editor allows you to:
Add tables (again, without knowing code or having to install plugins);
Arrange, rearrange, and mingle text and media by simply dragging and dropping elements from here to there;
Create content columns with ease;
Change the background colors and font sizes in each block;
Reuse blocks you use over and over (to save yourself time).
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
In other words, the two editors are different.
Very different.
How do I Use the Block Editor in WordPress?
With the background information out of the way, it’s time to walk you through the new block editor.
We’ll start with how to navigate it:
Block Navigation
Tumblr media
Add a new block
Undo and Redo buttons
Content structure (word count, headings, paragraphs, blocks)
Block navigation (a drop-down displaying all the block types used in the post)
Sidebar Navigation
Tumblr media
Preview and Publish the post
This is the classic WordPress sidebar: categories, tags, permalink, and publishing options
Block settings: when you click on a block in the editor, you get its unique set of options in the sidebar
Hide sidebar
More editor settings
How to Add a Block
In your WordPress dashboard, create a new post as you would normally. (Or, open an existing post so you can edit it.)
Click on the plus (+) sign in the top-left corner of the editor.
Select the category and the type of block you want to insert:
Tumblr media
Each block can be edited, deleted, saved as reusable, and moved up or down with drag-and-drop options.
Once you’re done with a block, you can insert more blocks. You can also duplicate a block or edit it in HTML:
Tumblr media
Types of WordPress Blocks (and How to Use Them)
Here are each of the types of blocks (broken down by category) offered by Gutenberg:
Common Blocks
This category of blocks contains the basic (“common”) elements people typically use in their blog posts. Most bloggers and writers will use these blocks more than others.
Paragraph Block
The Paragraph Block is simply a box for writing your text.
It comes with the standard formatting options — text alignment, font size, background and text color, drop cap, and more.
Tumblr media
Image Block
With an Image Block, you can easily insert an image by uploading it from your computer, picking it from WordPress media library, or copying its URL.
The standard WordPress options for images are included: you can add a caption, adjust the image size, add alt text, and more.
Tumblr media
List Block
With a List Block, you can create a list of items ordered by bullets (unordered list) or numbers (numbered list).
You can also add sub-items for each main item in the list, insert anchor links, and format the text.
Tumblr media
Quote Block
The Quote Block lets you add your favorite quotes in a beautiful, elegant style.
Write the text and its author, then format it just as you would in a Paragraph Block. You can use the default font size or a larger size.
Tumblr media
Heading Block
With a Heading Block, you can start a new section inside your post.
You can choose from six heading sizes. The first three are available inside the block, while the smaller ones can be found in the sidebar to the right of the editor.
Tumblr media
Editor’s Note: Even though it’s available in the sidebar, don’t use the H1 heading. It’s (typically) reserved for the headline of your post. Instead, start with H2.
If you’d like to learn more about them, here’s a post we wrote about common subhead blunders.
File Block
With File Blocks, you can add all sorts of files for your visitors to download: images, archives, docs, PDFs… you name it.
From the sidebar, you can choose to display a download button, open the file in a new tab, and link to either a media file or an attachment.
Tumblr media
Gallery Block
A Gallery Block is for when you want to add more than one image. It has the same features as the Image Block, but you can upload multiple images within the same block.
The gallery displays a nice grid layout. In the right sidebar, you can choose the number of columns in the gallery and each image’s destination page.
Captions are also allowed.
Tumblr media
Audio Block
Planning to feature music or a podcast interview on your site? You can use the Audio Block to upload and play audio files.
The block will display a minimalist audio player. You can choose to play it automatically and/or in a loop.
Tumblr media
Video Block
Using the Video Block, you are able to upload videos.
You have the option to autoplay and/or mute them. An awesome feature is you can upload a poster image for the thumbnail (in case you don’t want to display the featured capture it fetches by default).
Tumblr media
Cover Block
Using a Cover Block, you can create an image or video with text overlay. You can use it as a featured image for a post or as a header.
You can also adjust the background color and opacity.
Tumblr media
Formatting Blocks
This category groups blocks that focus on formatting content, such as pull quotes, tables, and verses.
Let’s go over each of them:
Code Block
Use the Code Block if you want to show your readers examples of code snippets.
The code won’t be executed; instead, it will display in a distinct style so it stands out to your readers.
Tumblr media
Classic Block
With a Classic Block, you can add a block resembling the classic editor and its classic formatting options. It’s a miniature TinyMCE editor inside a block.
Tumblr media
Table Block
A Table Block lets you easily insert a table in WordPress without plugins or having to know HTML code.
Write the number of rows and columns you need, pick the layout (default or stripes), and you’re set. Afterward, you can add rows and columns at the beginning or end of the table with one click.
Tumblr media
Verse Block
With Verse Blocks, you can add song lyrics or poetry verses.
When you press enter, you won’t be directed to a new block like in the Paragraph Block; instead, it will jump to a new row. You can write as many verses as you wish while remaining in the same block.
Tumblr media
Custom HTML Block
With Custom HTML Blocks, you’re able to write HTML code and quickly preview the changes.
You enter your code in HTML mode:
Tumblr media
And you preview it in Preview mode:
Tumblr media
Pull Quote Block
When you want to emphasize an excerpt of your article, you can turn it into its own block with a Pull Quote Block.
What distinguishes a Pull Quote Block from a Quote Block is its formatting. A Pull Quote Block has colored borders.
Tumblr media
Preformatted Block
Similar to the preformatted text option in the classic TinyMCE editor, a Preformatted Block lets you display the text on the front-end exactly as you type it.
The preformatted text uses a monospaced font, which means all characters have the same width.
Tumblr media
Here’s a preview of the preformatted text:
Tumblr media
Layout Elements
Blocks in this category help you beautify and arrange your post in a way that’s pleasing to the eye.
This includes blocks for adding colorful buttons, smart columns, media elements, and more.
Button Block
A Button Block lets you add a button to your post. You can customize its style (round, square, etc.), color, and the action to take place once it’s clicked.
Tumblr media
Columns Block
If you need to present your text in columns (“newspaper” style) rather than in full width, the Columns Block lets you do it quickly and easily.
Tumblr media
Media & Text Block
In the classic editor, placing images and text side by side required some developer skills. With the Media & Text Block, you can do it in just a few clicks.
Tumblr media
Lines and Separators Block
A Lines and Separators Block, as its name implies, allows you to add spacers between one piece of content and another.
This includes page breaks, line separators, and more.
Tumblr media
Embeds
The Embeds category lets you add content from social media sites, platforms, or any site from which you want to share posts or files.
You can choose to add blocks for Twitter, YouTube, Spotify, Flickr, and more.
Tumblr media
If you choose “Facebook” from the above list of blocks and paste a Facebook URL…
Tumblr media
…you’ll be able to embed the Facebook post directly inside your post:
Tumblr media
In the classic editor, this was significantly more difficult to do.
Widgets
With the Widgets category, your existing WordPress widgets (which were usually restricted to your blog’s sidebar or footer) can be easily added inside the body of your posts as blocks.
Tumblr media
Want to display a search bar or the latest comments on your blog right inside your post? You can by using the applicable widget block.
Need More Blocks? Try These Gutenberg Plugins for WordPress
As you can see from the list above, Gutenberg comes with a large selection of blocks right out of the box.
But if you need more, there are several WordPress plugins to give you even more functionality.
Otter Blocks Plugin
Otter Blocks is a free WordPress plugin providing 12 additional blocks, including Font Awesome Icons and Testimonials.
Once you’ve installed and activated the plugin, these new blocks will appear under the “Otter” category:
Tumblr media
Atomic Blocks Plugin
Atomic Blocks is another freebie offering (as of this writing) 14 new blocks focused on product owners. These blocks will appear inside the “Atomic Blocks” once you’ve installed the plugin.
Tumblr media
Stackable
Stackable provides 22 free blocks, some of which are already available in Gutenberg. However, they come with a different design.
If you work a lot with images, this plugin gives a few interesting layout solutions to blend text and visuals in an interesting way.

Common WordPress Block Editor Questions
Before we wrap up, let’s look at a few common questions related to Gutenberg. This is a living section and will be updated as time goes on, so if you have a question be sure to leave it in the comments section below.
How do I Rearrange Blocks?
Once you’ve created a block, you can drag and drop them as you please.
Hover over the block you want to reposition, then click and hold the dots icon to move it. Or, you can click the arrows above and below the dots to move the block up or down one position at a time:
Tumblr media
How do I Create Reusable Block Templates?
If you want to use a block more than once, click on the ellipsis (3 dots) and choose the “Add to Reusable Blocks” option:
Tumblr media
The block will be saved as a reusable block.
Once you saved at least one reusable block, the “Reusable” category will appear among the other block categories:
Tumblr media
How do I Disable the New Editor in WordPress? (Or, How do I Revert to the Classic Editor in WordPress?)
If you install the Classic Editor plugin, the previous (“classic”) editor will be restored.
The WordPress core team has committed to supporting Classic Editor plugin until “at least 2022” or “as long as is necessary.”
So, if you’ve upgraded to WordPress 5.0 or later, and you find you’re not yet ready to make the switch to the new block editor, this official plugin from WordPress will allow you to use the classic TinyMCE text editor you know and love.
Can I Give Access to Gutenberg to Only a Few Users on my Site?
Absolutely.
If you have a bunch of different users and user roles on a single WordPress site, you can allow/restrict access to the block editor only to certain profiles/roles.
Is it Called Gutenberg, the Gutenberg Block Editor, the Block Editor, or Something Else?
“Gutenberg” was the project’s name when it was in development. As such, many still call it the “Gutenberg editor” or, simply, “Gutenberg.”
After the release of WordPress 5.0, it became known as the “WordPress Block Editor” or, simply, “block editor.”
But whatever you choose to call it, it’s all the same.
Is Gutenberg a Page Builder?
Not in its current state.
However, the block editor is merely the first of three planned stages.
Stage three, full site customization, would turn Gutenberg into a full-fledged page builder.
How do I Know if a WordPress Theme or Plugin is Compatible with the Block Editor?
Once Gutenberg was officially merged into the core of WordPress in release 5.0, theme and plugin authors/developers needed to update their products to ensure they were compatible.
Most themes and plugins, especially popular ones, are now compatible with Gutenberg. However, you should always make sure themes and plugins are compatible before you install and activate them on your website.
With plugins on WordPress.org, look for the “Tested with” label:
Tumblr media
For themes, check if Gutenberg compatibility is mentioned on WordPress.org or its homepage:
Tumblr media
What Happens to my Old Posts After I Switch to Gutenberg?
Don’t worry — your old content won’t disappear.
When you update your site to WordPress 5.0 or later, each of your old posts will be converted into a “classic” block, which is similar to the classic TinyMCE content editor.
You can choose to keep your old posts “classic,” or you can convert them into blocks.
How to Convert Old Posts into Blocks?
Click the ellipsis (3 dots) and choose the “Convert to Blocks” option:
Tumblr media
This will convert your post into a series of blocks, which you can edit, delete, and rearrange as you would normally.
Gutenberg isn’t so Scary
Though it differs greatly from the classic TinyMCE editor, you shouldn’t fear the new WordPress block editor.
It’s fairly intuitive, it’s powerful, and it eliminates much of the clutter keeping you from what truly matters: creating great content.
You now have a simple, easy-to-follow guide to help you navigate the new Gutenberg editor.
We hope you found it helpful.
If there’s anything you would like to see us add, or any questions you have about the new WordPress block editor, let us know in a comment below.

Skeabost Hotel, Isle of Skye, Scotland
Don’t expect a lot of signposts to the Skeabost Country House Hotel when you turn off from the main road just outside the island’s main town, Portree. There might have been a couple of signs once upon a time, nowadays however, the route is virtually unmarked.
But if you carry on (and on) along the unpaved drive shaded by beautiful old trees on one side and the indolent river Skeabost on the other, you’ll eventually reach the hotel which has a commanding position overlooking the wonderfully-named Loch Snizort.
On the day we arrive, the Loch is perfectly still and seems to stretch as far as the horizon. It is disarmingly beautiful in the late afternoon sun and the views from the Loch-facing bedrooms must be delightful (our own, from the large suite at the front of the house, looks out onto the well-tended gardens and the car park – which isn’t as bad as it sounds as the grounds beside it are so pleasant).
Check-in is performed by a charming young man who welcomes us warmly and explains where everything is. Another staff member bustles by and acknowledges us with a cheery greeting.
It really does feel as though we are arriving in someone’s home (though not many homes can claim a rather gorgeous and magnificently threadbare sofa such as the one in reception. I learned later that it had, many years before, belonged to a senior member of the Third Reich, and it lost its appeal almost as quickly as I leapt off it).
There are just 14 rooms at Skeabost, some – like ours, the MacDonald – are decorated in the traditional country house chintzy style – as well as a handful in the modern boxy addition at the back facing the 9-hole golf course and the Loch.
9 hole golf course (c) Skeabost Hotel
Our room is apparently a suite (but it doesn’t have a separate sitting area so it is stretching the term a bit) but it is very large and comfy. If we’d brought the baby I’d have moved the cot into the bathroom which was so spacious that a more parsimonious hotel owner might have considered selling it as a separate bedroom.
spacious bathroom (c) Skeabost Hotel
I might also have considered sawing off one of the pillars of the four poster bed in order to watch television without having to perform the twist but we agree we haven’t come here to idle in bed, especially as one of us is planning an early departure with a view to climbing one of the Cuillin Hills at the far end of the island.

The convivial manageress, Janet, has thoughtfully provided guests with a little map of the immediate area – complete with directions to the island in the middle of the river where there is a burial site for the former Chiefs of the Clan Nicolson dating back to the days when the river – now a prime salmon-fishing destination, was where the warriors would throw the heads of their vanquished foes. Very Highlander.
A 10 minute walk – which can be at times slightly muddy and midgey (so do remember repellent, helpfully available at reception) leads to a rickety bridge that smaller or older people might need help getting over) over to the island. And then you’re really alone with the ghosts of the past. But rather than feeling spooky there’s just the sensation of being in the presence of some very old souls – and a few stone cairns.
Back at the hotel I take a quick trip down to the edge of the Loch – trying to avoid the early evening golfers taking advantage of the glorious sunset.
Then, having scoped out the lie of the land we’re ready for dinner and as the menu card in the room highlights the fact that local suppliers are used wherever possible we’re slightly disappointed to find that the bar (where the charming receptionist has morphed into a charming barman) only serves generic beer – and no local ales at all.
But the food is delicious and nicely presented and our charming waiter (guess who?) assures us that my plaice comes from the West Coast (though he can’t vouch for the rest of the meal).
There’s still time after dinner for another wander – the house has lots of nooks and crannies – including a wonderfully romantic rooftop turret with a panoramic view over the Loch and grounds that is sadly off limits to guests for the moment.
Surely someone is missing a trick here? With a bit of investment it would make a cosy little eyrie or private dining space.
fireplace (c) Skeabost Hotel
We hole up with after-dinner drinks in by far the most interesting room I’ve seen in a long time; the old games room which looks – by the condition of the threadbare wall coverings and the well-used snooker table as though it hasn’t been really appreciated since the building was first built for the Clan MacDonald.
At the end of the room are a marvellous ‘snug’ and a superb old fireplace partially blocked by a bizarre 1970s style fire screen. A selection of delightfully quirky books adds to our pleasure. We love this beautiful room which seems the only part of the place that retains a sense of the grand old building it must have once been.
breakfast (c) Skeabost Hotel
There are plans afoot I’m told, as we depart after a breakfast of kippers and poached eggs, to give the place a lick of paint – the outside could certainly do with it. I just hope the owners know what a treasure they have (and I don’t just mean the multi-talented, multi-tasking staff). The upkeep of an old building – especially one with so many corners and additions isn’t easy at the best of times. But somewhere this unique is worth restoring to its former glory.
Getting there
Nearest airport: Inverness – then a 2–3 hour drive.
By Train: Nearest station: Kyle of Lochalsh – trains connect with services to Scotland and the rest of the UK at Fort William or Inverness. Scotrail has fares on the London to Inverness Sleeper from £60.00 and from Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh from £11.30.

Baku-sitter: Chapter 10
Summary: Because his mother promised a favor, fifteen-year-old Bakugou Katsuki finds himself stuck babysitting a four-year-old Midoriya Izuku.
Ao3
Chapters: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
The next afternoon, the Saturday of that week, Midoriya-san drove over to Katsuki’s house as previously planned. An excited little Izuku bounced around in a toddler car seat behind her.
"I'm going somewhere with Izuku," Katsuki quickly told his mom as he headed toward the door. He’d neglected to inform her in the day leading up to, and certainly not because he was maybe slightly embarrassed or anything like that.
"What?" his mom questioned, looking up from a TV. "Where are you going?"
Katsuki kept his face out of view as he rested his hand on the doorknob. "Hero merch shopping."
His mom snorted. "Alright, nerd."
"I'm not a damn nerd!" Katsuki spun around and growled before he exited his house. He stalked to the vehicle sitting in his driveway.
"... Everyone thinks heroes are cool," he muttered under his breath in vain excuse.
"Hello, Bakugou!" Midoriya-san greeted through the backseat window that was lowered for her small son. She pressed a button and the car chunked unlocked.
"Kacchan! Sit back here!" Izuku urged with a bounce under the buckles that restrained his bountiful toddler energy as the teen made his way to the vacated side of the vehicle.
Katsuki eyed the enticing authority of the front seat. Then, with a sigh, he gave in to the toddler’s plea, opening the door behind and buckling himself in.
"Yay!" Izuku celebrated as his mom relocked the car and backed out of the driveway.
Katsuki noticed the unworn feel and look of the seats. They felt as though not many people had ever ridden in them, and he faintly wondered if he was one of the first to ever sit in the vehicle besides the two Midoriyas themselves.
Izuku brandished a silver coin out of his pocket proudly. "Look! I have money!"
"Don't lose it," his mother warned with a glance over her shoulder. Her obedient child recognized all the nooks and crannies inside the car that the little coin could fall into and stuffed it safely back into the protective containment of his pocket.
They eventually arrived at the rumored store, which was plastered from top to bottom in different heros’ faces even from the outside. Midoriya-san dropped the two off there at the front.
"You have your phone, right?" she checked with Katsuki, who nodded. "I'll be looking at some other stores nearby," she directed. "Izuku has that five hundred yen coin if he sees something he wants to buy. Contact me when you and he are done with browsing or buying or whatever it is you decide to do, though I know Izuku will want to walk away with an item." She gave her son a knowing look, and he smiled at her for being called out.
"Yeah," Katsuki affirmed.
Midoriya-san waved goodbye at the pair, her son waving back at her. He pulled the coin back out of his pocket as she left.
"Don't lose it," Katsuki reiterated sternly, eyeing the pair of clumsy toddler hands.
"I won't," Izuku promised, turning the coin over in his fingers, mesmerized with its potential.
Katsuki huffed. He could almost see the circular slice of metal rolling onto the ground and out onto the street, forever lost.
He felt the banknote in his own pocket. It was worth a thousand yen; his earnings from a single night of babysitting of the several others he’d earned. Ready to spend it, he led Izuku into the store.
Inside, it seemed like someone had mapped out the thoughts of a hero nerd’s mind. It was busyーwith images of people instead of with actual shoppers exploring the merchandiseーeverywhere to look being a depiction of some sort of new or well-loved hero. The immense amount of blue and yellow streaked with red and white revealed who was most popular.
There was nearly everything available to buy. From posters to figurines, keychains to bags, and shirts to notebooks, Katsuki couldn't believe he’d never seen nor heard of this place before.
"Oops!" Izuku exclaimed. A metallic clatter followed soon after.
"I told you not to lose it!" Katsuki scolded. While he craned his neck to scan the tiles beneath him for a shimmer, Izuku got on all fours and sniffed around for it like a puppy.
"Hey, you dropped this," he heard the smaller boy say. Katsuki looked towards Izuku to see him picking up an All Might themed pen for an immensely much taller man.
"Thank you," the man appreciated. Despite how sunken his eyes were, the blue twinkle in them that complimented his bony smile was still visible. "It must be nice to be short enough to pick things up off the floor, hm?"
Izuku nodded shyly at the stranger. Still, he must have been feeling courageous to have continued to converse. "Do you like All Might, too?"
The man chuckled with a smirk betraying secret irony. "Yes, I'm fairly fond of him, you might say."
Katsuki stepped forward next to them and spoke to Izuku. "Did you find your yen yet?"
"Oh!" Izuku remembered, returning to the floor to resume his search with renewed conviction.
he tall man shifted his thin frame. There was an air of familiarity about him. "Are you an All Might fan as well?" he inquired of Katsuki.
Katsuki wrinkled his nose and shrugged. "Whatever. This kid asked me to come with him."
The man snickered softly. "Alright then. Hope he finds his yen." He walked to the cash register to pay for his dropped pen along with a few other number one hero items he had gathered before he'd bumped into the two.
"Found it!" Izuku announced, crawling out from under a table with his coin held out in victory.
"And now you're all dirty from wiping yourself all over the floor," Katsuki complained, brushing the dust off of him a bit. "Pick something to buy and we can get out of here."
Izuku searched over the merchandise. "This?" He pointed to a high-quality backpack with the number one plastered on it in the top hero’s colors. The tag read a thousand times more yen.
"Too expensive. And too big for you," Katsuki dismissed. He considered it for himself for a moment, but ultimately decided against it with his own typical backpack at home. He observed the prices of smaller items instead. "You should probably get something like a keychain, since you already have a lot of posters."
Izuku took the advice and began assessing an array of the small dangling charms. He picked out a glimmering oval one in the likeness of All Might’s belt buckle and suit beneath. "This?" he wondered.
The price tag over the display read 500¥. "Yeah, just enough for your coin." He took a rectangular one of the same color scheme for himself that boldly declared, "I am here!" on its surface. Then he brought it to the register, letting Izuku place his choice on the counter himself.
"A thousand yen," the cashier added together and informed them. Katsuki pulled the according rectangular paper out of his pocket and handed it over.
Izuku hummed a whine, drawing his babysitter’s attention and stopping the teen mid-transaction. "My coin!" he pointed out, placing it on the counter.
Katsuki sighed. The cashier simply took the banknote and scooted the coin back towards the duo of customers as their change.
"Thank you, have a nice day," the cashier wished.
"Thanks," Katsuki replied. He pocketed the coin as he took out his phone and sent Midoriya-san quick a text. She replied soon after that she was coming right over.
"Do you think that All Might buys toys of himself?" Izuku wondered as she made her way back to the merch store.
Katsuki scoffed. "No, why would he do that?" The little kid’s mother pulled up just after to take them back to their homes.

Top Reasons to Use HTML5 Right Now
Keeping in mind the end goal to additionally demystify HTML5 and help these knuckle dragging fashioners and designers to bounce on the temporary fad I've assembled a main ten rundown of reasons why we ought to all be utilizing HTML5 at this moment.
There are lots of articles touting the use of HTML5 and praising the benefits of it, yes this is another one of those. With all these articles, with Apple pushing it, with Adobe building new dev products around it, and with so many web sites devoted to it, I still talk to fellow designers and developers who haven’t or won’t adopt it for a variety of reasons. I think the main problem is, it still seems like a mysterious creature to many. To many it feels more like the jet pack or the flying car — an awesome idea that is fun to think about but still not practical in its use. Wrong, the reality is that it is extremely practical right now! It’s not the latest Mercedes concept car being towed around form car show to car show, it’s a reality and it’s not going anywhere.
In order to further demystify HTML5 and help these knuckle dragging designers and developers to jump on the bandwagon I’ve put together a top ten list of reasons why we should all be using HTML5 right now. For those that currently use HTML5 this list may not be anything new or ground breaking, but hopefully it will inspire you to share the benefits of HTML5 with others in the community. We’ll do this Letterman countdown style (minus the celebrity presenter) and start with number ten – accessibility.
1 Accessibility
HTML5 makes creating accessible sites easier for two main reasons: semantics and ARIA. The new (some currently available) HTML headings like <header>, <footer>, <nav>, <section>, <aside>, etc. allow screen readers to easily access content. Before, your screen readers had no way to determine what a given <div> was even if you assigned it an ID or Class. With new semantic tags screen readers can better examine the HTML document and create a better experience for those who use them. ARIA is a W3C spec that is mainly used to assign specific “roles” to elements in an HTML document – essentially creating important landmarks on the page: header, footer, navigation or article, via role attributes. This has been well overlooked and widely under-used mostly due to the fact that it wasn’t valid, however, HTML5 will validate these attributes. Also, HTML5 will have built in roles that can’t be over-ridden making assigning roles a no brainer. For a more in depth discussion on HTML5 and ARIA.
2. Video and Audio Support
Forget about Flash Player and other third party media players, make your videos and audio truly accessible with the new HTML5 <video> and <audio> tags. Getting your media to play correctly has always been pretty much a nightmare, you had to use the <embed> and <object> tags and assign a huge list of parameters just to get the thing visible and working correctly. Your media tags just become these nasty, huge chunks of confusing code segments. HTML5’s video and audio tags basically treat them as images; <video src=”url”/>. But what about all those parameters like height, width and autoplay? No worries my good man, just define those attributes in the tag just like any other HTML element: <video src=”url” width=”640px” height=”380px” autoplay/>.
It’s actually that dead simple, however because old evil browsers out there don’t like our HTML5 friend, you’ll need to add a little bit more code to get them working correctly… but this code isn’t nearly as gnarly and messy as the <object> and <embed> tags:
<video poster="myvideo.jpg" controls> <source src="myvideo.m4v" type="video/mp4" /> <source src="myvideo.ogg" type="video/ogg" /> <embed src="/to/my/video/player"></embed> </video>
3. Doctype
<!DOCTYPE html>
Yup that’s it, that is the doctype, nothing more, nothing less. Pretty simple right? No more cutting and pasting some long unreadable line of code and no more dirty head tags filled with doctype attributes. You can simply and easily type it out and be happy. The really great thing about it though, beyond the simplicity, is that it works in every browser clear back to the dreaded IE6.
4. Cleaner Code
If you are passionate about simple, elegant, easy to read code then HTML5 is the beast for you. HTML5 allows you to write clear and descriptive code, semantic code that allows you to easily separate meaning from style and content. Consider this typical and simple header code with navigation:
<div id="header"> <h1>Header Text</h1> <div id="nav"> <ul> <li><a href="#">Link</a></li> <li><a href="#">Link</a></li> <li><a href="#">Link</a></li> </ul> </div> </div>
So this code is pretty clean and simple? But with HTML5 you can clean this up even more and at the same time give your markup more meaning:
<header> <h1>Header Text</h1> <nav> <ul> <li><a href="#">Link</a></li> <li><a href="#">Link</a></li> <li><a href="#">Link</a></li> </ul> </nav> </header>
With HTML5 you can finally cure your “divitis” and “classitis” by using semantic and HTML headers to describe your content. Previously you would generally just use div’s for every block of content than drop an id or class on it to describe its content but with the new <section>, <article>, <header>, <footer>, <aside> and <nav> tags, HTML5 allows you to code your markup cleaner as well as keep your CSS better organized and happier.
5. Smarter Storage
One of the coolest things about HTML5 is the new local storage feature. It’s a little bit of a cross between regular old cookies and a client-side database. It’s better than cookies because it allows for storage across multiple windows, it has better security and performance and data will persist even after the browser is closed. Because it’s essentially a client side data base you don’t have to worry about the user deleting cookies and it is been adopted by all the popular browsers.
Local storage is great for many things, but it’s one of HTML5 tools that are making web apps possible without third party plugins. Being able to store data in the user’s browser allows you to easily create those app features like: storing user information, the ability to cache data, and the ability to load the user’s previous application state.
6.Better Interactions
Awe, we all want better interactions, we all want a more dynamic website that responds to the user and allows the user to enjoy/interact your content instead of just look at it. Enter <canvas>, the drawing HTML5 tag that allows you to do most (if not more) interactive and animated possibilities than the previous rich internet application platforms like Flash.
Beyond <canvas>, HTML5 also comes with a slew of great APIs that allow you to build a better user experience and a beefier, more dynamic web application — here’s a quick list of native APIs:
    Drag and Drop (DnD)
    Offline storage database
    Browser history management
    document editing
    Timed media playback
7. Game Development
Yup, that is correct, you can develop games using HTML5’s <canvas> tag. HTML5 provides a great, mobile friendly way to develop fun, interactive games. If you’ve built Flash games before, you’ll love building HTML5 games.
Script-Tutorials has recently offered a four part series of lessons focused on HTML5 game development.
8. Legacy/Cross Browser Support
Your modern, popular browsers all support HTML5 (Chrome, Firefox, Safari IE9 and Opera) and the HTML5 doctype was created so that all browsers, even the really old and annoying ones, er, IE6 can use it. But just because old browsers recognize the doctype that doesn’t mean they can use all the new HTML5 tags and goodies. Fortunately, HTML5 is being built to make things easier and more cross browser friendly so in those older IE browsers that don’t like the new tags we can just simply add a Javascript shiv that will allow them to use the new elements:
<!--[if lt IE 9]> <script src="http://html5shiv.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/html5.js"></script> <![endif]-->
9. Mobile, Mobile, Mobile
Call it a hunch, but I think mobile technology is becoming more popular these days. I know, that is a pretty crazy assumption and some of your are probably thinking — mobile is just a fad… right. Mobile devices are taking over the world. The adoption of mobile devices continues to grow very rapidly and this means that more and more users will be using their mobile browsers to view your web site or application. HTML5 is the most mobile ready tool for developing mobile sites and apps. With Adobe announcing the death of mobile Flash, you will now count on HTML5 to do your mobile web application development.
Mobile browsers have fully adopted HTML5 so creating mobile ready projects is as easy as designing and constructing for their smaller touch screen displays — hence the popularity of Responsive Design. There are some great meta tags that also allow you to optimize for mobile:
Viewport: allows you to define viewport widths and zoom settings
Full screen browsing: IOS specific values that allow Apple devices to display in full screen mode
Home Screen Icons: like favicons on desktop, these icons are used to add favorites to the home screen of an IOS and Android mobile device
10. It’s the Future, Get With It!
The number one reason why you should start using HTML5 today is this: it’s the future, start using it now so you don’t get left behind. HTML5 is not going anywhere and as more and more elements get adopted more and more companies will start to develop in HTML5. HTML5 is essentially just HTML, it’s not scary, it’s not anything you really need to figure out or relearn — if you’re developing XHTML strict right now you are already developing in HTML5 so why not take full advantage of it’s current capability?
You really don’t have any excuses not to adopt HTML5 and begin your new love affair with it. Truly, the only real reason I prefer to use HTML5 is just to write cleaner code, all the other benefits and fun features I haven’t even really jumped into yet, but that is the great thing about it, you can just start using it right now and not even change the way you design. So, start using it right now, whether you are just simplifying and making your markup more semantic OR you are gonna build some sick new mobile game that will take over the world — who knows, maybe you can start selling stuffed animal versions of your gaming characters too.

Hints
Get The Girl From Players To Go With You
To make the girl come with you pick her up by pressing a and x at the same time. Then just walk back with her. You can throw her at zombies to knock them down too. It barley affects her health.
Good Weapons
There are good weapons in dead rising such as a frying pan if you put it on a stove you can shove it in a zombies face and kill them quick by a burning death it will also grant you 2000 pp points to put the pan on and reward you 100 pp points to shove it in their face.
Defeating Isabella
Before the battle grab a shotgun or a sniper rifle at gun shop shot her in the head until she DIES
Kill Prisoners, No Life Lost
After you receive the gun in case one, go to second floor were the food shop is grab 1 pie and 1 orange juice put both of them in the blender behind the counter when it pops out of the blender it should be red when you drink it you will be untouchable for about a minute so when it comes time to kill the prisoners make sure you have 2 untouchables and at least 2 pistols and there you go.
Take Out Convicts Very Easy
First, go to the paradise plaza and get the mini uzi and some orange juice just in case. Then at 7:00 go to leisure park and watch the cutscene and then get on the pavilion. Try to lure them over to you then shoot the gunner until he dies. Jump off the pavilion and grab the machine gun and fire at the last two convicts until they die. Also there is a survivor you can save named Sophie after you kill the convicts.
How To Really Get Simone (girl In Players) To Go With You
The only way that I found to make her go with you is to go into case mode. The reason for this is because if you don’t do case mode you never meet Isabela and if you do case mode and talk to Simone, Frank mentions Isabela being able to help her.
The Uzi In The Garage
First you go out into leisure park. Then you get to the garage. You take the car and drive through the ticket thing once you get through that you go right. After that you go left into a smaller tunnel. Then you get out of the car and go through a door in a tunnel to the left. (I suggest you bring a weapon). Then you look behind the boxes to the left and there is an uzi there.
How To Make Nectar
First you have to get two bottles of orange juice. Then you have to find a blender and blend them together and you get nectar.
Goods Every Where You Go
When playing you can throw trash cans or card board boxes to get good weapons or food such as pistols, Stun guns, Shower heads, sicles, frozen peas, and squash.
Easy Genasidest Achievement
To get the zombie genacidest achievement first have a new game started. When at entrance plaza with all the survivors then go to the back for the cut scene with Dr. Barnabe. When done just keep fighting the zombies. (Hint, The trash can and 40in tv last for ever. ).
Light In The Dark
When the power goes out in the mall (after 10pm)you can enhance your sight by grabbing a toy light up sword (can be found in paradise, wonderland, and entrance plazas). It emits a red light that in a limited area lets you see better (note: does not work before 10pm).
In Game Cheats
The books found in the game can be used as cheat codes to upgrade weapons, hold onto items longer, perform item tricks, and increase power.
Take No Damage From Falling
When you unlock the knee drop skill you can use this skillto your advantage and drop to the ground taking no damage.
Extra Kick
When you do a ordinary roundhouse you get 10 pp, but if you push down on the movement stick[not click! ] and push x as soon as you land a jump you will do a leg swipe for 30 pp.
Easy Special Forces Guns.
First, start an Overtime Mode game. It is recommended you do to get more achievements. As soon as you leave the hideout, go to The Hunting Shack. Grab a shotgun. Then, head into the maintenance tunnel via park. Go underneath the Food Store. Then, waste the few Zombies there as you enter the hall that leads to the pharmacy. Turn to were you enter the store. Open the door on the left and stand in between the doorway. The S. F . Will see you. They wont shoot instead they try to get in. Waste them. Repeat as desire.

Once your up keep walking across there you should see orange juice, a box, and a teddy bear. Keep going until you find the uzi.
The other uzi is in Al’Fresca Plaza. Go to the fountain and there are a lot of zombies crowding it. Once in the fountain you should find a dumbbell and a Uzi. And there you have it the two uzi’s!

Now, if you want, you can usually makea small lap around the tunnels without the truckbreaking but if you dont feel safe, leave throughthe west side of the map back into the parkinglot. Now, you won’t have to worry about missions and the zombies will never get stronger.

After case1 is activated and Jessie gives you the gun, go directly to North Plaza. Once inside go to the Huntin’ Shack, it’s down a narrow hallway. How To Get A Unlimited Supply Of Guns
Get to North Plaza, and, with your map, find the Huntin’ Shack. Go inside to find Homicidal Cletis. When you start the fight, hide behind a store display. When he realods, pickup the display and move forward, and drop it close to the counter. When Cletis realodes again, hop over the counter, grab a shotgun, and jump back behind the store display. Youl be lucky if you finish that last move without being shot. Now, every time he reloads, shoot him with the shotgun. If you beat him, you can always come back to the Huntin’ Shack for guns.
How To Jump Vehicles
To jump vehicles to get the achievments for them, get to the park and get a car or motorcycle. Drive in the lake and drive out at full speed at the highest part of the lake. An easier way to to jump a motorcycle, is after the fight with Isibella on her motorcycle, you can take it and jump around ramps in North Plaza. You can also ride her bike around two other plazas.
Roller Coaster Ride
Ride the Roller Coaster around for one lap and get 10,000 PP.
Easy Boss Killing Chainsaw
In day two, at some point Odis will call about the roller caoster out of controll. Go check it out to meet Adam The Clown. If you succesfuly beat him, pickuphis chainsaw. You can put it in you invitory, ad it kills bosses in less than 5 hits. Most bosses come with a unique weopon, but this is one of the best.
Easy Way To Kill Sec Ops
The easiest way to kill Special Forces is to get to a Level between 40 and 50 and learn Disembowel. Get close to special forces and just do Disembowel. Dont forget to pick up thier machine guns!
Katana
Go to the paradise plaza. Go to the second floor and find the Columbian Roadmasters in the food court. Look over the rail and you should see an orange platform. Jump on it and there should be a katana there. The Katana is a one-hit-kill weapon and chops the limbs off zombies. It is one of the most powerful weapon in the game.

After tfis you willbe in the tunnels and otis will call you saying that he lost a maintenance key down there. You will need to take a right then the first left and then another right right away. You will come to a dea end with a door that is closed at the end. Mowe down the zombies near the door to make it easier to get in. Once in , go all the way back and to the right and it will be right there. If you go to the back and the left ther shoul be an Uzi.
Convicts Machine Gun
Get a nail gun or a pistol and go into the park. Get the attention of the convicts and make them run into a tree. While they are at the tree, get right next to the tree and in front of them. He should back up and try to ram you a couple of times but should not hit you if you are in the right position. The machine gunner will shoot you hardly any so this gives you plenty of time to pop the gunner in the head until he dies. You may then run up and take his gun.

Field Notes for First Essay
Troy Kitchen
I showed up around noontime and opened the door to see the rest of my class sitting and taking jottings. Many of my classmates were talking and some were getting up to buy food. It was seemingly peak lunch time so I thought it was weird that the place wasn’t busier. With the exception of our class, there were only a handful of small groups there. This could simply be that a lot of people are taking their food to go; it’s a weak but steady stream of people making their way through. Ambient music was playing, the type that’s meant to go on in the background, with no words. As I looked around to get a sense of the demographics, it was clear that Troy Kitchen caters more to the younger crowd, having generally accessible prices for students and middle to low income 20-30 year olds (didn’t see a lot of families there, but it was also a school day). There was no single predominant race represented; it was a pretty even mix of everyone (also reflective of Troy’s demographic). As there were many places to buy food and generally not many people coming in to eat, many of the employees behind the counters were yawning, staring outside, talking with one another, or just looking bored. I can’t say I blame them; smaller businesses like these probably don’t have many employees and as a result have to work long days. People who come in to eat pause immediately after coming in the door where they take a look at all the options, then eventually pick one place to go to. The placement of their decision-making is unfortunate for the coffee/bistro place that is located on the other side of the entrance/exit doors. I suppose once they sit down they notice, and if they want coffee they’ll go for it. I see the coffee shop employee bringing hot drinks out to two girls sitting down. The rest of the shops don’t do table service. As I look to the even more desolate side, I see some pretty neat wooden designs on the bar (which is currently unoccupied). The wooden designs (made by the owner) are a real conversation piece, and I would say it attracts people to the bar. Also on this side is a stage, which is for late night performances. From previous knowledge, this place is actually more popular at nighttime.
Spill’n the Beans
I entered Spill’n the Beans around 1pm, and there was no line to the cash register. I noticed the many different types of coffee available, as well as the various desserts in the display case. I ordered simply a coffee, and because I did not specify, the cashier recommended the standard medium blend. I’d say this girl was in her mid twenties, also caucasian. At Spill’n the Beans, you added your own half and half, sugar, etc. to your coffee. Somewhat separated from the cash register area was the main seating. Having been here for breakfast before, I knew this was usually pretty full in peak hours. There were only a few college age kids doing work on laptops, most of these with headphones in, and another group eating sandwiches. Once again, taking into account the time of day, most people may already be back at work, and others at school. So it made sense there weren’t a whole lot of people there. There was classic rock playing, this created a non-rushed environment. One of the girls who worked there went around bussing some of the dirty tables, gave us a smile. The main seating had tables for 2 and 4 people, and in addition to this area, there was also a section closer to the cash register with lower, cushier chairs and a fireplace. This is clearly an area meant for sitting down and hanging out. I could hear the prep chefs chopping what sounded like veggies, potentially for a sandwich or salad. There was a TV turned to some GMA-like show, though it seemed no one was watching. The setting gave off a somewhat industrial or rustic vibe, with old brick walls, metal art pieces scattered around, “hip” artwork along with old scenes of the streets of Troy. Not many people were coming in and out while I was there, but the people that were there weren’t leaving any time soon.
Mall Food Court
I showed up to Crossgates around 7pm, and it seemed like a pretty good time to see a diverse sample of people getting dinner. I sat down at a table meant for 2, there were many of these facing the rest of the food court. I looked around and saw a pretty ethnically diverse crowd. Many groups of people were eating at the 4 person tables - some groups of college-age kids (early 20’s), some young families, and one group that seemed like a couple developmentally disabled people and who seemed to be their carers. One boy in a wheelchair kept shaking occasionally and making loud groaning noises. Every time this happened, a lot of people would turn to look. The food court was very wide open, with Subway, Taco Bell, a hoagie shop, Wendy’s and two asian food places competing for lowest price (currently at $3.99). A common theme was quick service for grabbing a quick bite to eat. Some people stuck around longer than others but all of these food choices indicated to me that you were to eat quickly and conveniently to get back to shopping. There were a few people who sat down with their bags, others sat down alone. There were a few single seat countertop areas but not many solo diners were taking advantage, usually opting for the two person tables or some even at the four person tables. These people usually were buried in their phone, some had headphones in, and all of them had their head down facing their food. Typical mall pop music was playing, it’s not too offensive to any ears, and I assume is supposed to give a mass appeal vibe.
Dick’s
This shop was harder to get ethnographic research on because not a whole lot of people were walking through the store. And most of what I think is obvious is very deliberately thought out for a streamlined customer experience. As I entered the store, immediately through the doors were five or six clothing racks full of clearance goods. As expensive as sporting clothes usually are, this is a good way to immediately grab the attention of anyone who’s just shopping around, and maybe even enough to attract some people to the store. These clearance racks were by both entrances. On the bottom floor, you could find pretty standard ball sports, each corner or section all the way around the walls labeled by big letters “BASEBALL,” “LACROSSE,” or “FOOTBALL”. Training clothes could also be found, more toward the middle of the store. Big posters or signs with advertisements for top brands advertised intense looking athletes with catchphrases like “Protect this house” (under armor), etc. All an attempt at branding the products as the most effective, the most durable clothing for athletes to have. The aisles were all relatively wide, my guess would be it’s due to the relatively big/bulky nature of the goods sold. On the top floor, the categories were a bit more vague or obscure. They had golfing supplies and “OUTDOORS,” which covered fishing and hunting, and some camping/hiking supplies as well. On all the aisle caps they showcased the premiere products in that category, then they would put less expensive models further down in the aisle. They could be saying “this is what the pros are using, but you could get something a little cheaper…” Logically, they are stocked for the season, with more skiing goods than swimming necessities. There were a few other people in the store who looked to also be just browsing, a boy and his mother seemed to be looking at one prop target in particular but two other guys a little older than me were price checking some ski goggles. My guess is the floor staff don’t make commission, because none of them offered to help me in any way, instead they just tended to their business, folding shirts or straightening up goods in various sections.
Pizza DaVinci
My friend and I came here to pick up a bite to eat late at night, after arriving home from a racquetball tournament late at night. It was around midnight when I pulled up against the apartment building adjacent to the pizzeria. As we walked inside, I noticed the smell of fryer oil. The location is convenient for anyone on 15th street or Hoosick street. Being right on the corner by a stoplight, it’s easy enough to pull in here for a quick slice. The prices are reasonable, but when we walked in we noticed there was no menu posted. Only take-out menus in a stack by the register. There was a two-tiered rack of pizzas, about eight or ten total, meant to be sold by the slice. There was one drinks cooler by the cash register, and another two by the seating area. I could tell this place was optimized for take-out or delivery. I sat down to wait for my food and I noticed the light green walls with white trim. There were two doors to this place, with windows lining the walls. One door faced the speedway across 15th street, the other faced Hoosick street. While I was there, the delivery driver came in once to grab an order. A woman who looked like she might be pregnant came in to grab some pizzas and a soda (an order that she’d placed over the phone I presume). Also, a group of kids wearing RPI gear came in and ordered some slices of pizza. They sat down and talked about some of their other friends, and what they were planning on doing for the rest of the night. It was hard to put my finger on the nationality of the employees - either Greek or Italian, but there were about five of them behind the counter and in the kitchen. I could hear the pizza oven door open and shut every time. There was one employee sitting at a table looking at his phone. They seemed pretty relaxed most of the time, because there weren’t many customers to be attentive to.
Recovery Room
I went to the Recovery Room at 9pm on 50 cent wing night, and although I thought we were going off peak hours, there was still a 10 minute wait to get a table. I guessed this was because many students had 6-8pm class on Monday (in fact, that’s why we waited until 9). When we were seated, I noticed that nearly everyone sitting at a table was an RPI student. It makes sense that a good deal like 50 cent wing night attracts the college crowd, as most students are trying to save money for various reasons. The only exception to this one sided demographic was a couple of middle aged men at the bar. There is a lot of seating in the restaurant, and rightfully so, because there are many TVs meant for watching sports games. We mostly caught replays and different analyses or talk shows. There were remote speakers that could be tuned to different TVs, to listen to what a certain TV was playing. They didn’t have them out on tables, but I could see them on their storage rack. The lighting was slightly dim, maybe to contrast the brightness of all the TVs. There was also a small assortment of arcade games, possibly to distract the kids, and possibly to entertain adults waiting for their food. There were a lot of sports games, and that’s usually the type of friendly-competitive genre game you’d see at a bar. The people there were all dressed pretty casually, probably because they were college kids, but also because the sports bar scene attracts a casual customer base.
