1. why did you choose your url?
well i was bad at making choices back when i joined tumblr too, so i asked my sister what my url should be and she very wisely said that it should represent who i was so i went with the obvious and have never looked back since*
*except for the two week period in march 2021 when i was rainbowsam hashtag goodtimes
2. any side blogs?
yeah, a lot. way too many actually. but most used currently are the-messedup-priorities-so-far (reblog blog for general stuff) and oi-oi-oi-oi-erwin (aot blog bc i'm newly ✨ obsessed ✨)
3. how long have you been on tumblr?
i complete five years in jan <3
4. do you have a queue tag?
yes, it's 'queueueueueueueueueueue' but the number of ue's vary with the weather. also i don't always tag the queued stuff as queue since tumblr has a fast-queue button now so most of the time, you won't really know. (like right now actually, cause 80% of the stuff on my blog is queued *mysterious laughter*)
5. why did you start your blog in the first place?
pinterest showed me the way and then my sister diagnosed me with tumblr material :')
6. why did you choose your icon/pfp?
it's a closeup of bangs!sam eating a rainbow. how could i ever resist? (also: icon credit to @xojo for stilling and magnifying the gif <3)
7. why did you choose your header?
i was going through my picsart phase and editing dozens of spn screencaps a day when i stumbled across purple dog shirt sammy on a bed with a laptop and felt, what the kids these days call, recognition of the self through the other <3
8. what's your post with the most notes?
a "list" of things spn taught us, posted on november 19th, that just has 'get vaccinated' written on it. there's way funnier "lessons" in the notes though
9. how many mutuals do you have?
how...am i supposed to know? (no, genuinely. where do i find out?)
10. how many followers do you have?
4793. and no, i also have no idea where they're coming from. i love them tho 💖💖💖
11. how many people do you follow?
spanning over a multitude of fandoms, over a thousand :)
12. have you ever made a shitpost?
bold of you to assume i don't have entire tags dedicated to them
13. how often do you use tumblr a day?
it's gone down recently because I've got some exams and other real life stuff coming up but it's still an easy couple of hours. more, probably :D
14. did you ever have a fight/argument with another blog?
yeah, a few times, i think? there's been the usual stuff with w*ncesties on my own posts but that's practically a rite of passage. and there were a couple of times somebody was mean to my friends. but it's been a very long time since either of those things so yay!
15. how do you feel about the you need to reblog posts?
at this point, i'm immune to both the "need" to reblog and the annoyance caused by somebody pointing it out, so whether i reblog or not really just depends on the post :)
16. do you like tag games?
very much! the joy of being thought about outside of my direct sphere of existence my beloved <333
17. do you like ask games?
absofruitly, but i'm phenomenally bad at completing them :< doesn't stop me from starting new ones like every other week though. thank you for bearing with me :')
18. which of your mutuals do you think is tumblr famous?
a lot of them actually? can't blame them for being so perfect, ngl 🤷🏻♀️ but anyway here's two famouse friends: @super-sootica and @queer-as-frikc :3
19. do you have a crush on a mutual?
well, i DO end up asking @paper-lilypie to marry me every now and then. might just be a coincidence tho :/
tagging everyone who's already been tagged up there and @3dg310rdsupreme @irrlicht-ghostfront @bluefirecas and @sherlockisactuallyagaysname if you wanna <3
#tag games#this is like weeks old im so sorry for when this randomly shows up in your notifs eth#but i'd started it before my ''''hiatus'''' so i completed it. are you proud of me :')#about me#long post#shey rambles

1. Why did you choose your url?
A vague reference to the Octavia butterfly scene from The 100 1x03, which remains one of the most aesthetically pretty things I’ve ever seen even seven years later. (And at this point, ebf is so much a part of my identity here that I’ll probably never change it.)
2. Any side blogs?
Not that I actively use.
3. How long have you been on tumblr?
Since 2011.
4. Do you have a queue tag?
Yep, just “queue” - no fancy here.
5. Why did you start your blog in the first place?
Someone I was friends with at the time thought this would be a good place for me... ten years later, here I still am, lol.
6. Why did you choose your icon/pfp?
Marie the cat is one of the fictional characters I vibe most with - cute femme who will still fight anything that irritates her. That particular icon, which has also been my icon on ao3 for I-don’t-even-know-how-long-anymore, is an expression I make a lot in real life.
7. Why did you choose your header?
Another babe that means more to me than I could say in this space, and also too lazy to ever change it at this point. (Like, I swear I’ve vibed with other things since trash show happened to me but sometimes you would not know it from my aesthetic choices.)
8. What’s your post with the most notes?
What She Chose. Currently at 226 notes, which is good for a fic in general but even more so for (a) a niche rarepair that (b) I only ever wrote that one time. It has gotten notes within the last week and I have no idea how people are still finding it.
9. How many mutuals do you have?
Hell if I know, am not sure how to check.
10. How many followers do you have?
2,903. I suspect most are dead blogs at this point, but if I keep up with current attention-all-over and a little more fic writing I may FINALLY break 3k soon.
11. How many people do you follow?
1580
12. Have you ever made a shit post?
Not by intent?
13. How often do you use tumblr a day?
If I’m home and on the laptop then I’m probably at least passively on here.
14. Did you ever have a fight/argument with another blog?
Not that I can remember? Depends on if y’all wanna count the whole 2012-Les-Mis... incident parade, might be a way of describing? But I try to keep my head down here / block and blacklist relentlessly.
15. How do you feel about the ‘you need to reblog’ posts?
I scroll past and ignore. I was raised in a cult-adjacent environment and I have manipulative extended family members, I am COMPLETELY immune to guilt especially from people I do not know.
16. Do you like tag games?
Usually don’t do them but enjoy seeing what y’all tag me in.
17. Do you like ask games?
Yep, fun time.
18. Which of your mutuals do you think is tumblr famous?
No idea.
19. Do you have a crush on a mutual?
None that don’t already know about it. <3

Today Is My Birthday
And I'd hoped to write a better-laid-out post about that, but I lost my backpack on the bus, including my laptop.
>And also the essentials that I keep in my bag because I'm not accustomed to having a place I can leave them that isn't attached to my body
>You know when you're already carrying one thing so you forget you need to carry multiple things? It was that. I had a box from the food pantry and had to squeeze through the crowded bus after missing my stop, and missed the bag
>I immediately reported the lost backpack by calling the helpline, but it may take up to 5 business days to even learn if they find it, and I have class, assignments, job correspondence, and every other need of compute /today/. But I'm trying not to stress about that, because literally everything in my life is like this and stress has never helped before.
------
But anyway - I'm 21 now! I'm hoping the increase in legal rights will include something useful to improving my life, though I don't know yet. I need to sit down with like a caseworker and learn what all the kinds of support structures are, because I've found I'm kind of bad at enumerating like that.
I always do depth-first searches and then know quite a lot about something - including that I'm not eligible for it. I don't systematically screen through options based on what's possible, but learn incredibly detailed portraits of each in order - meaning I never get past the start of any list.
Relatedly, I want to be more polarising in my personal life, but am not sure how to operationalise this. The current status quo is that everyone starts off with a non-specific positive impression of me, and then eventually gets tired of waiting up for me as I depth-first engage with everyone else in the queue.
Ideally, something like 90% of people would mostly engage with me indirectly and not really mind because they would have decided for themselves that we wouldn't fit. And then I could depth-first with the 10% who have a high likelihood of fitting well with me.
------
The question is living my life in a way that properly broadcasts what my API is, so that people with compatible APIs immediately realise this and can move to the front of the queue. The most important features of this being:
A really strong appreciation for honesty, genuineness, and a lack of artifice. Liking the things you like wholeheartedly. Letting your true beliefs shine through in word and deed. And /especially/ caring more about being honest than being nice.
I think that's probably the best splitter, as most people think of themselves as both, and I really want to prioritise the relationships that will clearly put honesty above niceness. If you care more about being a nice person, you'll always be tempted to lie to yourself about whether your actions hurt others to preserve the belief that you're nice. I want to vibe with the people who are willing to directly look at their shadow, with the strength to say when things I might find harmful are worth preserving.
Mostly dependent on high honesty, I value a strong willingness to directly problem solve on the level of the relationship. This is the thing that commitment means to me: The willingness to invest in real maintenance. If there is a problem, having the first response be to directly formulate the problem and assume good faith in our trying to address it. I've seen a lot of relationships die from an unwillingness to tear up the floorboards when the foundation is rotting. I will always prefer the pain of seeing problems to the loss of the relationship itself.
And just as important is that we have compatible ways of building and maintaining connection. I love physical contact, and what I really want in a friendship is someone I hug when I see, squeeze their hand for emphasis, ruffle their hair for affection, and brush against them just because it feels good to.
I want to dance with them, no matter how many times they claim they can't dance, because they mean that they can't dance well enough to impress me, and impressing is /not. the. point./ (Wouldn't it be crazy if you never spoke to people because you felt every word you said had to be impressive? Well, firstly, I have that problem these days and I can confirm it's crazy. And also this is how I experience dancing and I just as much want to see your way of moving as your way of speaking - as idiosyncratic as can be.)
And best of all, the ability to be in flow states around each other without being focused on each other in that moment. To be moving around each other without collision or confusion, with occasional smiles and touches just because we like each other, but without being pulled off course for the work we're doing in that moment.
------
These are the relationship properties I want to aim for. I know that to get there I need to live my life in such a way that pulls in the kind of people who want that sort of relationship. The question is - how? What should I be projecting in my life to ensure people choose knowingly?
I definitely think part of selecting for prioritising honesty is being more disagreeable, but I want to do that right. After all, I /do/ want to be nice - I just care /more/ about being honest, and I want to know how to live a life that makes that clear. How can I live such that I will draw in the truth over any more comfortable lie?
Similarly, how do I make a preference for physical contact clear, given that in practice I rarely touch others? I don't because I can rarely be sure the other person is cool with it, and strongly lean toward caution - but everyone else is also doing that, so the net result is no one touching and no information to select on. Are there ways to broadcast to the world that I'm pro-touch when in practice touching others is rare?
I think I've already done a good job broadcasting to the whole damn city that I like music and dance, given that I dance basically everywhere, and my earphones imply it's to music. The problem is how to make it clear how much I want other people to be dancing with me. Not 'with' in the sense of doing the same dance, but just to have others who use the language I do. I think my question for my 21st year is: How can I live my life such that other people want to get up and dance too?

Have you seen ‘Inside Llewyn Davis’?
It’s a good job I don’t post a new blog every week – I’d have nothing to talk about.
Whereas, leaving it a few months between updates, I have LOTS to cover. You ready? Let’s begin:
Since returning from Texas, I have completed a month’s contract onboard another ferry, after my management were kind enough to offer me a way out of short-term pecuniary disenfranchisement. It was the sister-ship of the one that I normally find myself on and I’m pleased to say that it was the better of the two: the indoor smoking room (I no longer smoke) was a [much larger and better equipped] gym and the gym room was a very plush TV room with a full satellite package.
Given the cricket world cup was taking place during my contract, it was wonderful to be the only person on the ship who wasn’t busy working during the day. I had the whole TV room to myself (about 25 yards from the mess, food, drink, etc.) to indulge in what was an amazing tournament.
On my last two contracts I was playing in the main theatre (in the belly of the ship) with a party band but for a month I was providing troubadour, solo, action upstairs in the Sky lounge – my first contract as a soloist. After an initial knee-jerk reaction to accepting the contract of downloading a ton of backing tracks, so I could provide a range of musical options, I realised pretty quickly that this was completely unnecessary.
Performing 4x 30min sets a night: I started out by planning 3 days’ worth of unique sets, which I figured I could adjust and tinker with until I was happy with how they all worked out. Slow, mellow ones to start with before whipping the crowd into a frenzy with sing-a-long classics later on in the night. I think I had about 150 songs in my solo repertoire to choose from and it’s basically about 7 or 8 songs a set (depending on how long I drag them out for).
It was the usual mix of songs that I know I can play and sing – which work in a solo setting – and a desperate grab for as many other suitable songs which I could learn or which I really wanted to try out acoustically.
However, pretty early in the contract, one of the ladies on security in the port was kind enough to pass on her head cold to me. My throat was soon swollen enough for me to ask my Entertainments Manager (EM) if it would be OK if I just played some instrumental stuff until my voice was better. His reaction – reading between the lines, and the indifferent shrug – told me that he couldn’t care less what I did as long as I was up there making some form of noise for my allotted times.
Now, this meant that the bar staff / bar manager in my venue must have been happy with what they had heard of me so far: they are always the ones to complain if something isn’t working or going to plan. This pleased me: the bar staff have to listen to the solo act over and over and over again, every night for weeks on end, so whereas the passengers might only hear one or two performances, the staff will hear every single one.
They become very sensitive to how good/bad people are in both their playing and their selection of material – normally the lack of it. 150 songs might seem a lot, but that’s only 5 days worth before you repeat yourself IF you stick to playing every song.
Anyway, to cut to the chase, I quickly got the 30 min sets down to 3 or 4 songs – only two of which I might sing on. I needed to come up with a few more jazz instrumentals to bluff my way through as the staff were hearing Autumn Leaves and Blue Bossa every night, and I don’t want to drive them too mad…
It was a good exercise in needing to be creative with a looper pedal as well as figuring out which of my repertoire I could drag out for around ten mins with solos before and after each verse/chorus…
It meant that I could reduce the songs on which I did sing down to a select, polished group. It was a great relief to know that I could just throw down a loop and meander whimsically around some melodic lines for the duration of the sets. Audience were happy, bar staff were happy – I was over the moon!
The audiences were a mixed bag. Most were very receptive: in the warm summer evenings, the top lounge where I played was the place to be. Plus it is right next to the open smoking decks – so there have been some good numbers of bodies in, most of the time. They don’t seem to mind me in the corner with a looper pedal just noodling away and I’ve been able to play all the requests thrown my way so far. The German passengers seem extra friendly and receptive – apparently they LOVE a bit of Dire Straits, which suits me right down to the ground because so do I.
As per most contracts, there were times when a small, appreciative crowd were loving everything I was playing – just as there were times when a large, unappreciative crowd couldn’t have cared less what I was doing. In my final week, I was determined to give it everything I had in those final shows – I poured my heart and soul into everything I did. And no-one noticed, cared or gave a hoot.
Such is life!
Some nights I sucked, didn’t want to be there… some nights I was on fire, didn’t want it to end… I had a ton of fun, even if it didn’t feel like it all the time. I also got to head into Amsterdam a couple of times which was wonderful, it’s possibly my favourite European city and I’ve spent so many hours wandering around the canals and streets.
There’s a breakfast café very near the station which always – ALWAYS! – has a queue of about 10-15 people waiting to get in. It’s called Omelegg and I’ve always wanted to know what the food is like in there… all the online reviews say it’s incredible… my lifetime quest to find out for myself continueth…
The party band who were onboard were a nice bunch. They were in the lamentable – but not uncommon – position of joining the ship with a guitarist who was young, naïve and completely unprepared for the contract. However, he was a nice, well-meaning guy and the others didn’t seem to be willing to cuss him out: they were kind of hand-holding him through the contract. Bless.
Bands are responsible for making sure they know what they are doing, are rehearsed, etc. and apparently this kid had known for a year that he was doing it. Sounds like his reasoning was as follows (taken from ad verbatim quotes from the band):
· I’m the best guitarist at my university
· I can play anything and I can sing a bit
· I should be able to figure out / jam along to whatever the band play
I was torn: between admiring the sheer, bare-faced audacity of naïve youth and gobbling popcorn at the eye-widening, car-crash drama of it all. I managed to catch a few of their songs – when our set-times overlapped a little – and it was, indeed, painful to witness.
I wish I could say that I hadn’t been there before, in his shoes (albeit under slightly different circumstances), but I had. All I can say is that if you survive a baptism of fire like that and STILL want to pursue it as a career, you’ve already displayed enough courage and determination/perseverance to almost guarantee some level of success. It is being right at the bottom of a very steep, painful learning curve.
I also loved my Ibanez jazzy hollow-body guitar on this contract, too. I bought it in Hong Kong a few years back (the Tom Lee store there is incredible: an Aladdin’s cave of guitar goodness) and hadn’t really touched it since. I wasn’t sure if the contract would stipulate ‘acoustic-only’ – but that was me being overly cautious. Not only does it sound great – that oaky, woody, jazzy sound you’d expect from that style of guitar – but it plays so much more easily than anything else I own.
And, because you guys are always most interested in the tragic, nerve-wracking, up-and-down drama of my life as a musician, I’ll fill you in on current events.
I’d been lining up a contract for later in the year, back onboard the last cruise ship where we did the acoustic duo gig. This time as the party band, which – although fraught with its own logistical challenges – was at least a contract on the table. Indeed, I had digitally signed and returned it and was relieved to have another 5 months of work booked in to keep my head afloat.
However, the delightful and immensely-talented LT had previously – and both I and the drummer were loosely aware of this – auditioned for a cruise line which paid nearly twice the money for not quite half the work, but certainly a much more agreeable working environment.
So, it was with a sense of dread and doom that we read her message saying that she had been offered a contract with this other cruise line and we weren’t going to be able to tag along. We weren’t going to do the contract without her and we all knew that she was destined for greater things than earning minimum wage with no days off for five months.
So, here I am under fairly intense financial pressures and no work on the horizon. It’s all very Inside Llewyn Davis, which pleases and disgusts me in equal measures. On the plus side, in my attempts to get some sort of a side-gig going, I’ve done some work as an extra on a major Netflix production which was being filmed in Wales. It’ll be out later this year, I’m hoping to get some screen time – it’ll be something to laugh about with my family.
So yeah, there’s the update. I may leave it as long again to allow enough to occur to make it a riveting read… but then I don’t have much on at the moment and may end up publishing frequently as a means to pass the time…
*salutes*

Online services through the generations
New Post has been published on https://3veta.com/blog/articles/online-services-through-the-generations
Online services through the generations
People from every generation are working from home a lot more. They are also beginning to demand more of their everyday tasks to be quickly done from the comfort of their own sofa. Like a doctor’s consultation, your son’s tutoring or even your Zumba class. This is where online services provided by video chat are proving extremely convenient. It’s therefore no surprise that their popularity is growing vigorously.
As with most other technological advances, this phenomenon of online services from home fits differently into every person’s life. We adopt innovations in many different ways. But there is one factor that allows us to know pretty accurately how a certain person would react to a new technology. It’s the generational factor.
From Gen Z to Baby Boomers, everyone has their reasons to use video conferencing for online services. And when it comes to offering them, the motivators are even more diverse for each generation. We will examine the following generations:
Gen Z
Millennials
Gen X
Baby boomers
Generation Z
Born after 1996, some Gen Zers aren’t even old enough to vote yet. The oldest of them only entered the jobs market a few years ago and are still far from the corporate tops. With their limited buying potential, aren’t they the least interesting in terms of consumer economy? Well, we are talking about online services here. A video chat that ticks off an item from your to-do list. And this is where you hit a sweet spot with Gen Z.
Gen Z youngsters have grown up surrounded by technology. Тherefore they look for conveniences in every area of their lives. Online shopping is like second nature to them. Out of all generations they have benefitted the most from digital educational tools. This means that they will consider any queueing or travelling to offices an unnecessary waste of time.
Do you see how they will be the perfect customer of a home-based online service? As they gradually increase their disposable income, they will start needing various consultations more regularly. And they are certain to opt for the digital option.
What will they fancy?
One thing to consider though is that while Gen Z are digital natives, they are exclusively bound to their smartphones. Laptops are a device of last resort to them. According to a Snapchat survey 78% of Gen Z admit their mobile phone is their most important device to go online. At the same time 57% of them feel insecure without their smartphone. So providers who are after the Gen Z users should ensure their mobile app has all the bells and whistles of the desktop one.
And bells and whistles are a very Gen Z thing. You can attract them by offering a fully integrated experience in your platform. This means scheduling, in-app messaging function, file exchange, visual tools. Being extremely impatient too, they will definitely not tolerate online service apps that make them go through numerous unnecessary steps.
You might wonder what channels to use to promote your service to Gen Z.
Social media? Think again.
This young generation are the kings and queens of Snapchat and Instagram, but according to McKinsey, they’re more pragmatic and analytical about their decisions than the other generations. When deciding on products and services their most trusted source are family and friends. This is good news for providers of online consultations because they gain their customers through word of mouth anyway.
Gen Z is an exciting market and will be soon showing its full potential. But if there is one generation that you must never neglect when you talk about technology, it’s the Millennials.
Millennials
Everybody is interested in millennials and there are good reasons for this. People born roughly between 1980 and 1995 are currently the world’s largest living generation. They have finally recovered from the economic recessions and have a total spending power of $1.4 trillion in the US . They will be a significant consumer of online services but also have various reasons for entering this segment as providers.
Millennials are the most mobile generation with more than half planning to live in their homes 5 years or less. They are also known to dislike commuting which all contributes to their propensity to choose home-based professions. Millennials are currently accumulating valuable professional experience in the corporate world. Come a few years, and they will be looking to practice their knowledge exclusively to their own advantage.
As users of online services from home millennials are already ahead of other generations. There is strong evidence that they require telemedicine services more than the generations before them. Currently only 15% of GPs in the US use telemedicine tools. Since millennials don’t have great healthcare needs yet, you can imagine the kind of revolution that will happen very soon.
How can you win a millennial customer for your online service?
Well, unlike Gen Z, millennials will not choose an online service just because it is online. Millennials are savvy customers who like to visit both physical and online shops for their purchases. To trust an online service they need to be certain about the quality of the service and the technological benefits. Providers have to make sure that their credentials are visible and that they have an informative website. Any extra options that your platform offers will be welcomed by the millennial user.
Enough said about millennials. The future of online services from home becomes even more exciting when you factor in the mature generation – Gen X.
Generation X
Gen X is sometimes forgotten by media and analysts and that is totally unfair. Known as “the slackers” and “the forgotten middle child”, they are in fact quite remarkable. People born between 1961 and 1979 are not as numerous as the Baby Boomers and Millennials. However, they are currently at the top of their careers and concentrate the largest spending power in the world.
However, Gen X seems to have a widely appreciated problem in the corporate workplace. According to data from the Harvard Business Review, Gen X is the most overlooked for promotions generation. They are however highly skilled, and actually have more direct reports than millennials on similar positions. They are also great communicators and know how to show empathy. This makes Gen Xers the perfect candidate for an online consultant – where your success really depends on your qualities.
In addition to that, many Gen X people are currently looking after their growing children. Аt the same time they are taking care of aging parents. That makes it quite difficult to fit a 40-hour office week and the leap to freelancing is more likely.
Gen Xers are also not afraid of adopting new technology. While Millennials top all charts in terms of technology use, Gen X is now adopting new technology much faster than 10 years ago. As providers of online services, they will appreciate the benefits of a robust video platform with well integrated features.
Gen X as users of online video services
As users, Gen Xers use both laptops and smartphones and will prefer consultants that allow them to have that choice. Their large disposable income makes all sorts of consultations very useful for them – financial investments, tax advice, even career coaching. Managing their heavy workloads takes up a significant amount of time. Therefore choosing an online video solution becomes a necessity for them.
Last but not least, let’s take a look at Baby Boomers. Online video consultations actually fit them really well. Read on to see why.
Baby boomers
Baby boomers are now going into their retirement age. You would expect them to have a decent disposable income, having finished raising their kids and paying their mortgages. It doesn’t seem to be quite so simple though. The financial crises of the 2000s have had an effect on savings and many baby boomers are delaying retirement. The problem is they are getting older and are generally less tech savvy than millennials and Gen X. This means they will not be the most competitive on the jobs market.
However they are highly skilled due to their long experience. Therefore they will be valuable providers of online consultations in the traditional professions – doctors, lawyers, business consultants.
On the other hand, many baby boomers who are more comfortable in their finances will choose to retire early. This could be either to look after grandkids or to pursue their long neglected hobbies. We often see them leaving their workplace only to start struggling with all their free time. Online consultations present a fantastic opportunity for them to maintain social contacts and attachment to their profession.
Of course, that means baby boomers will require the support of online consultation platforms. For their needs they are likely to choose simple, but reliable solutions that streamline the consultation process. That allows them to focus on what they love.
We shouldn’t underestimate the baby boomers as users of online consultations either. They already need regular access to healthcare and are the second largest living generation. So it’s only a matter of time until they become the largest users of telemedicine. For those of them who are with restricted mobility all other online video services will be particularly helpful.
Which generation to focus on?

Will there be fans at NFL games in 2020? Team-by-team attendance & ticket policies during COVID-19
If you’re having trouble keeping track of the NFL teams that will allow fans in their stadiums for games during the 2020 season and those that will not, you are not alone. Bills coach Sean McDermott and Vikings coach Mike Zimmer are just as frustrated.
“I think it’s honestly ridiculous that there will be, on the surface, what appears to be a playing field that’s like that — inconsistently across the league with the different away stadiums,” McDermott told media members on Aug. 24. Said Zimmer a few days prior: “It’s going to be very hard because some stadiums they’re allowing people in and it looks like we’re not going to have any fans in there early, which really stinks because we have unbelievable fans, and they make that place rocking every Sunday.”
The 2020 NFL fan attendance spectrum of which McDermott and Zimmer speak is massive. Some teams like the Raiders have already announced they will not host fans at any of their eight home games this season. Others like the Cowboys have announced plans to let fans attend the games at varying percentages of stadium capacities.
MORE: SN’s NFL predictions for the 2020 season
The is the result of the NFL allowing each of its 32 teams and those organizations’ local officials to make the calls on whether to let fans attend pro football games amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The league has established on-field protocols in an effort to keep players and team/league personnel safe from the virus, but the situations in the crowds of its 30 stadiums are in the hands of the locals.
“It’s not surprising that there are regional variabilities, because obviously there are differences in the state of the pandemic and the state of the infection as you move across the country,” said NFL chief medical officer Dr. Allen Sills on a recent media conference call. “So the fact that there’s not one-size-fits-all approach shouldn’t be surprising given the medical situations across the league.”
Below are the latest developments regarding the fan attendance policies for all 32 teams in 2020 as the Sept. 10 NFL season-opener approaches. They obviously are subject to constant change.

You will not possess time to clean your brand new house on the time of the move, especially prior to things begin being actually loaded in to it. Consequently, you need to steam-clean carpetings and also wall structures prior to you transfer if needed.
Additionally, to spare yourself the time and trouble, work with a house cleaning service to address the effort for you.
If you require cottage for the lag time period, book it earlier instead of eventually
If there's going to be a period where you are caught between houses, or are actually unable to move into your brand new home because of makeover work, you must try to set up brief cottage as quickly as you can. Hotels are cheaper if you manual beforehand, and you will not encounter the same need for rooms as you would if you left it till the last minute. If you are wanting to place some belongings into storage for the time being, contact your closest products storing center to learn what's accessible.
Make the most of your Wi-Fi
The Wi-Fi may not be established at your brand-new property for a few days, therefore maximize functioning cordless internet in your present property while you can. It could be a great concept to publish out any instructions you need to comply with, or even any sort of instructions for brand new digital products for your new residential property. You can regularly seek a local café or even use your mobile phone information if you need to have critical net gain access to.
Produce a beneficial factsheet for your home's brand new proprietor
It would be extremely handy for your residence's brand new proprietor if you produce a factsheet that particulars every one of the necessary relevant information regarding your house. This will also make it less probably for the brand new proprietors to maintain calling you andasking questions when you're attempting to put together your new house. You need to consist of where the stopcock is actually, where the gas and power meters are, when the bins are accumulated and who supplies the electricity, broadband as well as residential phone.
Make moving time easier
Set up kid as well as family pet care for the day of the technique
The time of the huge action is actually usually fairly frantic and occupied, so the final factor you wish is to possess a youngster (whether that be actually a child or a dog) rollicking to create the day a lot more challenging. Try to arrange for family members or an enrolled childminder to take care of your little ones while you relocate house. For household pets, you could take advantage of a dog shipping service to make sure they reach your brand-new home securely.
Stuff a moving-day survival package
When the special day arrives, you may certainly not possess time to stand out to the store if you require one thing important. This is actually why you ought to comprise a carton of things that will certainly be of use to you in a near-empty house. It ought to feature: a teakettle, dairy, tea, coffee, coffee cups, bread, bottled water, toilet roll, toiletries, flatware, and also layers.
When you get your new home, there is actually an opportunity the water and power may certainly not be activated however, especially if your house is actually a brand new build, thus attempt to pack items that will create your lifestyle less complicated in a planet without features.
Moving house will certainly take a ton of company as well as preparation, yet with assistance from a specialist staff of moving companies, the anxiety actually may be lifted from you. Pickfords offers an extensive moving service, whether you are actually moving domestically or even abroad. Our team have the locations to declutter your valuables, before arranging and stuffing all of them, and after that transferring all of them to your brand new residence. When there, our experts will help discharge the products and be sure that every little thing is actually where you desire it prior to our team leave behind. I’ve changed my page info/description to reflect what N+C fandom projects I’m currently working on. Further details are below the cut.
But first... reminder that any of you are more than welcome to message me anytime! I joined this site in large part for the community, so if you want to talk N+C I’d be more than happy to get to know you. You don’t need to have the same fav characters/pairings as me to talk to me (I’m entertained with how many friends I’ve made here who initially didn’t think I would talk to them because of their preferred pairings). As far as I’m concerned, diversity is the spice of life. <3
Now, on to projects...
- I successfully figured out how to make language patches for the N+C games! Yay! I’m working on Osu Boys (one of the N+C April Fools joke games) as a proof of concept. It’ll be finished shortly.
- I’d already started on TnC Poker as my original “learn to patch” game before @seragaki-yuki wisely suggested Osu Boys as a better starting project. There is actually a TON of dialog/text in TnC poker, believe it or not, so I’m picking away at it slowly between other projects.
- I definitely plan on making a patch for Rhythm Carnival as soon as I get a copy. Most of the text is actually what I’ve already translated for the 10th Anniversary video, so it shouldn’t take too long to do once I get started on it.
- I plan on making patches for TnC Typing and True Blood once the others are finished. I have hard copies of both already. I’m *hoping* to recruit some help on the translation front prior to attempting these games, though, since I feel like it’s a bigger deal if I screw things up. FYI, the actual typing portion of TnC Typing will still be in Japanese (both kana and romanji), because that’s just how the game is set up. It’s supposed to help you learn to type in Japanese - you don’t need to be able to understand it, just copy the letters on the screen.
- Regarding the DMMd games, I don’t want to attempt to patch Re:Code before a better translation patch for DMMd/Re:Connect is made, otherwise all of the same mistakes will just be repeated over again. I was pretty late to the N+C fandom, but I have definitely picked up on how unhappy many fans seem to be with the original translation (which frankly scares me a bit, since my own translation skills are far from perfect). I’ve sort of put out antennae to find some of the other fans who have done work on re-translating DMMd. Since I’m already working on so many other things, I won’t aggressively pursue them right now, but if other fans want these games translated/re-translated badly enough to be willing to do some actual work on them, I’m definitely willing to help out in whatever ways I can to make sure that it happens. (Justice for Mink!)
- Regarding the other N+C mini games like Nyanda, Lamento Typing, and Chiral Mori... I don’t personally have any plans to work on them, but that might change if someone else was really inspired to translate these guys, wanted to pick them up as their own projects, and just needed an editor to turn them into an actual patch that people could use and play with.
- I seriously need to finish my own gift project for the N+C Exchange, so progress on the translation front will be a little slow for the next couple of weeks until the release date on August 31st. But I’ll pick right back up after that.
- I’m actually RPing now! That’s been a lot of fun. I RP Nano (TnC), but I have a merged DMMd/TnC universe if any DMMd RPers want to play with me (or just want to talk merged-universe conspiracy theories). Even if you don’t RP, you can always send me asks, anon or otherwise. I’m not too picky - I’m just happy to have an excuse to write.
- I really want to find more time to work on my original fanfic... I’m a much better writer than translator (I hope!). If I’m procrastinating on my other projects, there’s a good chance that it’s because I’m writing and don’t want to stop. Unsurprisingly the vast majority of original content that I write centers around Nano. Fair warning, I went really dark with some of it, even for N+C. I’ve also written a few DMMd fics, but... lately I just want to focus on Nano right now, because I find him to be a very inspirational muse.
- Our discord server is alive and very active, both on the project and social front. Lately we’ve been playing a N+C Cards Against Humanity game with a custom deck created by @kisamaa more-or-less in-character. It’s such a weird and fun cast. Depending on who’s on (since we’re all around the world) we’ve got: Nano, Shiki, Arbitro, Alpha, Akushima, Usui, Sly Blue, and Leaks. Shenanigans are inevitable. We’re starting up some new games, too. Send any of us a message if you want a link. (I’d just post the link here, but apparently the links expire and I’ve had a couple of people complain about it, so it’s easier to send them to folks directly.)
- I’m working on scanlations for several different doujinshi, it’s just been a little slower than usual on account of everything else I’m doing. I’m still focusing on Alpha and Nano doujinshi, with some Clear stuff thrown in for good measure. The next one that will be released is Experiment Time! which has a good combo of both sexiness (Alphas testing out their sexual functions in many different ways) and angsty existential robot problems. Once I get the three big doujins that are half-finished completed, I am going to start on Hiki’s three volume series “The Last Days.” It’s a very angsty BE!Clear/Aoba series designed to tear your heart out. Hiki is my fav CleAo artist, both because of her impressive artistic talent and her storytelling expertise. (And here I swore I’d never do BE!Clear... ah well, so much for that...)
- If you haven’t already heard, there is a really awesome and active new DMMd scanlation group that has recently formed and focuses primarily on NoiAo doujinshi (but are working on doujins for several other pairings as well). They’re looking for more translators, editors, and proofreaders, so contact @desamparo7, @seragaki-yuki, and/or @a-little-harmed-shinra if you want to help out with their projects.
- I’m still scanning/digitizing doujinshi for multiple people/groups. My make-shift “scanner” which I posted a tutorial for earlier still works better than any professional scanner I’ve tried. I should probably update my tutorial on post-processing, though - I’ve since gotten it down much faster with noticeably better results since I originally posted. (Speaking of which, if I’ve promised you something and haven’t given it to you yet, please remind me. It isn’t an intentional slight - there’s just a lot to keep track of sometimes and I get scatterbrained.)
- I’ve scanned all three of the 10 Years Archive books. I’ll get back to posting artwork from them shortly as I get them edited... I’ve been spending so much time on my Nano blog lately that I forgot my queue ran out on this one. XD I will post the full-spread 2-page images later in their entirety, because it takes some creative photoshop skills to get them to match up exactly and I just don’t have the time to do that right now. (But I will do it!)
- Random, but I’m so ridiculously excited to get a hold of that TnC benefits poster that came with the C92 Comiket Rhythm Carnival. Nano in a sparkly rainbow butterfly costume... seriously WTF? (It’s especially funny to me because I used to cosplay/RP Caterpillar many years ago when I still went to Nocturnal Wonderland... and I was just talking about how he reminds me of Nano. Apparently N+C thought so, too! Now I have this weird mental image of Nano sitting on a mushroom smoking hookah... and I’m not sure it’s any sillier than Nano in a sparkly butterfly costume holding a magic wand.)

So I’d think it’s fair to say that most people going to Red Dragon Con 4 will probably have attended an RDC before, but just in case, or if you had a tough time getting things in place last time around, here’s a tips list, from the basics to extras.
Autographs! - All Gold/Regular ticket holders get 1 autograph per guest included with their ticket price, Bonus Guests are chargeable to regular ticket holders and Extra Guests are chargeable to everyone. If you would like extra autos beyond what you’re allocated you can buy them at the con (from the desk by sign ins) and you can do this in two forms. Either you can buy a photo, and the cost of the photo includes an autograph, or you can buy a “badger” which means the guest will sign something you’ve brought, like a funko or an artbook. Autos are £10/£15/£20 depending on the guest. Badgers and photos are exactly the same price. Autos are called by ticket type and number, please do not queue unless you’ve been called as you won’t be allowed in the room. The calling is done via notices on the screens in the talks, via a white board in the atrium and via starfury’s con twitter. You’ll be given a card containing your “free” autos, if you lose it you won’t get a replacement and each auto is ticked off as you get it. If you bring something to be signed by a guest, whether or not they are willing to sign it is entirely at their discretion, I would recommend not bringing anything that you think might cause a stir.
Photos! - No photos are included in your ticket price. You buy what you want before/during the con. All guests will do individual shoots and groups selected by Starfury (this typically depends on which guests characters work well together) and then also they’ll do a shoot with all the guests. Photos are typically (Eddie Izzard was an exception) not organised by ticket type or number, but preorders went first as of RDC3. When it gets closer to the con you’ll be able to buy selected photo shoots online, and this is the only way to guarantee you’ll get hold of a photo ticket. Though it’s v. unlikely they’ll turn you away. Photos are £20 (for individual guests, though the “main” guest i.e. Mads, Hugh etc may cost slightly more) and then the groups range up to £130+ for the photo with all the guests (and if you want more than one attendee in the photo it’s £5.00 per extra person.) The photo queues are scary but do go quick. I would recommend not buying all your photos for the Saturday or Sunday, spread it out. There is a (free) bag drop off so they aren’t in your photos, but you do have to carry your preorder email or cards with you when you go round.
Talks! - Talks happen on both Saturday and Sunday from around 12pm to about 5pm. There is a break for lunch (but this is when the fan meets take place, see below) of about half an hour. The seating for the talks is Gold at the front, stewards and then regular ticket holders. All the talks are about an hour long and are made up entirely of questions from the audience, there is a microphone at the front and people queue for a chance to ask a question. (If you’re unable to queue, someone can hold a place for you and when it’s your turn, a microphone will be brought to you.) Talks are filmed and projected onto huge screens.
Fan Meets! - My knowledge here is limited because I’ve never done one but the essentials are, if you’d like a “meet and greet” scenario whether you’re a gold or regular ticket holder, you can buy a ticket to have a talk with some of the guests. These are held (as above) during the talks break on both Saturday and Sunday, so if you want to do them your schedule becomes pretty hectic. There are select tickets for each talk, you have to sign up at the registration desk. Only certain guests do them, Bryan and Hugh didn’t for RDC3 (for obvious reasons.) Details I’m not too sure on, so please correct me if you’ve been to them: Sessions are 30 mins, tickets are £20 and the groups are of about 10 people.
Meet and Greet! - Gold ticket holders only! This is run immediately after the opening ceremony and golds will be directed to the room as soon as it’s over to be seated. Tables are of 9 (with a chair left for the guest) and you’ll be asked how many are in your group before you enter the room. Guests will then work their way around the room, spending about 5 minutes at each table. With regards to how long it lasts for, that’s anyone's bloody guess. RDC1 we were there until midnight, BTRDC we were out at like 10:30 (lots of gold ticket holders didn’t show to the con) and RDC3, well, 4 in the morning. Basically, it lasts as long as it takes for the guests to get around and as long as you’re willing to wait. Bryan Fuller is of course the worst offender, but regardless of who is attending, prepare yourselves for a wait! (with booze and pizza and probably some sort of activity.)
Stewarding! - I’ll definitely be stewarding this time around! Basically it means you help out with the con a little over the course of the weekend, most people will have a 3(ish) hour slot on the Saturday and the Sunday. Things like being on the door and checking badges or doing the bag drop for photo sessions etc. You won’t miss any autos/photos you buy (you may be able to skip some queueing too if you’re stewarding during the sessions,) you get to sit behind the golds in talks and you get a group photo of the guests as a reward at the end of the weekend. (Check out my one from RDC1) I’ll post when Starfury are asking for sign ups and put the info on my RDC4 page.
Gifts for the Guests! - Keep them small if you can, Bryan and Hugh had gift collections at RDC3 and then we know that Bryan shipped all of his stuff back to the US. This was a later addition to get the queues running faster, so I don’t know what they’ll do for RDC4, but regardless, there is a high chance if you give them bulky stuff they’ll have to leave it.
Self care! - It’s very easy to not eat or drink anything over the weekend, I would recommend bringing a bottle you can fill up with water and snacks. For RDC3 I didn’t have a single square meal (but that was super bad, I’m changing it up to ensure I do actually eat this time around) it’s that easy to forget about. You aren’t going to want to go up to your room constantly either so bringing a bag you can carry everything in for the day is also important
Guest care! - They will be in and around the hotel, getting to and from sessions, getting into cars and sometimes in the bar. Please don’t use this as a chance to swipe a freebie. The weekend is crazy for them and because it’s Hannibal and they’re awesome, they are probably already going above and beyond what they’re paid to do. Unless they’re willing and able (like for example, Vlad turning up at the hotel on one of the evenings) please just let them do what they have to do in peace. You have plenty of opportunities to interact with them and ask your questions over the weekend.
Misc!
- Lanyards for your con badges are an extra £2.50, please have this (and to make it easier, in change) ready when you sign in on the Friday evening.
- There is a raffle for the con banners and posters (signed by the guests) over the course of the weekend and winners are announced on the Sunday.
- Bring a folder to put your photos/ autos in. (Mine also has my name and telephone number on it just in case.)
- Lots of people are now wearing badges with their URL’s/twitter handles on so everyone knows who is who! Here is mine!
- FLOWER CROWNS! Please wear a flower crown! It’s a wonderful, beautiful thing that makes the whole event look much more like a Fannibal one!
- You don’t have to stay in the con hotel to come, and sometimes staying elsewhere is cheaper, along bath road there are lots of options. But if you’re staying in the con hotel and still want to keep costs down, it’s cheaper to bunk up! Single occ is £80 a night, double is £90 and triple (with 1 camp bed) is £110.
- There is a cash machine at the con hotel but you are charged to withdraw. But planning what you want and sticking to it (i.e. drawing the cash out pre-con) is the best way to stick to your budget and not go mad. I know exactly what I want photo/auto wise before I walk into the hotel and I do not deviate.
- Some people (particularly international fannibals) do arrive on the Thursday so there’s a little going on that night too if you want to make a longer weekend of it. The con discount for the cheaper rooms doesn’t apply for the Thursday so you will have to pay the normal rate (which is currently £132 for a double room.)
*This is how starfury/the hotel runs things as of the time of writing, I doubt they’ll change the set up too much but if they do, I’ll alter this post as soon as I’m aware. This post is built upon my own experiences of RDC1, BTRDC and RDC3.*
As always if you have any questions about the con let me know and check out my RDC4 page for the most up to date info on what’s going on.
#Hannibal#RDC4#info#some super basics#but i know that if some people aren't in full posession of the facts they become stressed out#and I really don't want people to stress out#tbh#it's a relatively easy weekend as long as you don't mind a little bit of queuing#AND you remember to eat#most of my RDC3 problems were caused by me just not having time to buy food#and then drinking LOTS

Get to Know Me
I was tagged by the loveliest @prince-of-elsinore for this get to know me tag game :) I’m going to mostly answer these questions as being about this blog, even though it’s a sideblog. For the folks I tagged, there’s a clean version of the questions below the cut if you’d like to answer!
-
1. why did you choose your url?
I have a deep fondness for the song There Goes the Neighbourhood by Sheryl Crow
2. any sideblogs? if you have them, name them and why you have them.
This is a sideblog :D I started it first as a place to dump posts that might be more controversial so I could get into tumblr arguments without alienating or exhausting a bunch of followers, back when I was a bit more self-conscious. I barely used it for years until I tripped head-first (back?) into the SPN fandom and was using it as a place to drop a ton of wincest posts as fic-inspo. Eventually it started to take on a bit of it’s own identity
@coldtomyflash is my sideblog for DCTV / arrowverse on the CW. It was my first sideblog and I created it so that my main didn’t become completely overrun with coldflash (the flash / captain cold) when that became my hyperfixation several years ago. still post from time to time and there’s an AO3 pseud with all my coldflash writing that is predominately connected to that blog. at some point i’m gonna join a new fandom and have to decide which pseud to post under...
@forthebothofus is a new and not-much-used sideblog I parked the url for in case I ended up getting really into Walker (CW). I’ve reblogged some stuff but I only have one foot in that content right now so idk where it will go, if anywhere.
@phynali is my main
3. how long have you been on tumblr?
since sometime in 2012, if not a bit earlier
4. do you have a queue tag?
not on here that i can recall (i tag very sporadically on here? it’s still partly a place for me to dump every SPN post i think looks pretty) but on @phynali it’s #thank queue for coming
5. why did you start your blog in the first place?
i explained why i started this sideblog up there, so to explain why i joined / started @phynali: it was for fandom. livejournal content was drying up and i couldn’t find new dedicated forums or communities, but i started noticing people link their tumblrs on AO3. i found out an irl friend who wrote fic had a tumblr so I asked her to show me the ropes
6. why did you choose your icon/pfp?
the first theme i setup for this sideblog was all winter imagery, maybe because of my love for captain cold or maybe because it was mid-winter in canada when i set it up (who can say). i haven’t changed the image because i’m both lazy and resistant to change
7. why did you choose your header?
brb checking what my current header is because i think i actually did change it recently -
ahhh right okay so there’s this sort of neon aesthetic i’m into related to an original writing project of mine called Rest for the Wicked and this is one of the images i dragged up for vibe i’m going for with one of the characters
8. what’s your post with the most notes?
on this blog? i honestly don’t know, i mostly reblog and add commentary so tracking notes on original posts doesn’t mean much. on @phynali i know that my post arguing against exclusionary bullshit when the ace discourse was in its heyday on here got 10k notes in the space of a day. i can’t claim all the notes though; i was arguing against the OP because she was spewing pastel-coloured bullshit, and the post blew up because because my friend moderated a well-followed discourse blog and reblogged my argumentative reply.
related to SPN, my post with the most notes is likely my one about Sam and bodily autonomy
9. how many mutuals do you have?
do... do people count??? i have no idea?
10. how many followers do you have?
on which blog...? @phynali has 1100+ but this blog has under 30, and tbh I’m kinda shocked it has any, given the lack of original posts or anything approaching a tag system. it’s all added commentary and reblogged art and somehow y’all are into that and i am delighted
11. how many people do you follow?
121 and it’s. too many. just. too many. i need to cut that down. i try to keep it under 100 and this is the most i’ve ever followed.
12. have you ever made a shitpost?
on @phynali yes, numerous times, mostly about my friend being the zodiac killer
13. how often do you use tumblr each day?
there used to be days where i was on all day every day with it the background. now i’m mentally healthier and my adhd is medicated and being treated so i have a bit more control over my social media usage. i’d say i’m on most days 1-2 times (morning and evening), but whether i just pop in to check if i have messages or whether i stick around and scroll varies depending on what else i’m doing that day.
14. did you have a fight/argument with another blog once? who won?
hahahahahahahahahahahha -
uhm. yes. note what this sideblog was made for in the first place: an easier space to argue with people (ironic that it’s the only blog i’ve ever had where i haven’t got into an argument with someone).
i’m a scrappy little shit and at any given time you can assume i’m actively restraining myself from getting into unnecessary internet arguments. i literally got off facebook because i got a reputation for take-down arguments in the comments of my friend’s posts, back in like 2010.
i don’t always win, but i either learn something, change my mind, and concede, or else i’m going to say i won because i’m stubborn like that
15. how do you feel about “you need to reblog this” posts?
utter garbage. i hate guilt appeals. the surefire way to get me to not do something is to try and guilt me. i will bite off my nose to spite my face before i allow someone to guilt-trip me
16. do you like tag games?
i do! they’re often fun :)
17. do you like ask games?
i also do! assuming we mean the ask lists you can reblog, that is. except they’re often very horny, romantic, or deeply personal? or maybe it’s just that the people i follow reblog those ones the most frequently. either way i don’t reblog them much because i’m seldom interested in the questions listed
18. which of your mutuals do you think is tumblr famous?
i’ve been here near a decade and still don’t know what constitutes fame on this website. there’s like 5 blogs i think of as tumblr famous whereas the rest of us are just chilling in this amorphous space.
19. do you have a crush on a mutual?
a crush-crush? no. a writer-crush? @lovetincture‘s writing is so beautiful i want to drown myself in it and they’re a good part of the reason i dipped my toe onto twitter (at which point my adhd promptly sucked me in because wow that website is constant stimulation just like this one). so i guess that counts?
20. tags?
if these folks are interested (no pressure though ofc): i know you already tagged @fallcolorspringrapid so how about @lovetincture, @redmyeyes (who recently posted this fic y’all should go read), and @digitalmeowmix :)
clean copy of questions to copy/paste below the cut
clean copy:
1. why did you choose your url?
2. any sideblogs? if you have them, name them and why you have them.
3. how long have you been on tumblr?
4. do you have a queue tag?
5. why did you start your blog in the first place?

Multifamily Trends in NYC, New Jersey: Similarities and Differences
Jeff Sica, CIO, Circle Squared Alternative Investments. Image courtesy of Circle Squared Alternative Investments
New rent-control regulations in New York City have impacted the market’s multifamily sector and put off certain investors. “Because of this, buildings with rent-stabilized units will be valued lower and will ultimately weaken the city’s tax base,” Jeff Sica, CIO of Circle Squared Alternative Investments, told Multi-Housing News. On the other hand, New Jersey continues to be a desirable area for multifamily investors due to its proximity to two of the country’s largest employment centers, according to Sica.
In the interview below, he weighs in on how residents’ needs are bound to change after the pandemic and what developers can do to meet their demands. Sica also shares how COVID-19 has impacted the company and its projects, as well as his view on how the multifamily market is expected to recover once the crisis passes.
READ ALSO: Why Waterfront Micro-Neighborhoods Are so Popular
What makes the New York and New Jersey areas favorable multifamily investment opportunities?
Sica: We are not as enthusiastic about the New York City multifamily market, but we remain fully committed to the Northern/Central New Jersey market. The passing of rent regulations in the Housing Stability and Tenant Protection Act of 2019 has made New York City multifamily less desirable at this time and we believe this has and will continue to drive interest into the Northern New Jersey market, which will increase competition as well as investment.
We feel strongly that Northern New Jersey will remain an attractive residential location as the high rental rates in New York City and the surrounding boroughs continue to drive residents to New Jersey’s communities. The Hudson River Waterfront continues to attract relocations of tech, financial and consumer products firms. With two of the country’s largest employment centers within a short commute, demand for Northern New Jersey multifamily will continue to be strong.
Tell us about your company’s recent projects and why these stand out.
Sica: NJCU West Campus is a 21-acre redevelopment that, when complete, will consist of four multifamily buildings, a campus dorm, a performing arts center and a grocery-anchored shopping center. This project represents a successful public-private Partnership, which will bring approximately $1.4 million annually in revenue to the school. The first project, The Rivet, in which we partnered with The Hampshire Cos. and the Claremont Co., received the 2018 Excellence Award from ULI Northern New Jersey and the project itself is one that we believe has set the stage for a whole new market in Jersey City on the West Side.

What are three trends that define multifamily development/redevelopment today in the New York-New Jersey region?
Sica: I believe that the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated some trends in the multifamily market domestically but especially in Northern New Jersey. I think renters will be forever changed by this experience and amenity packages will become a larger driver in their rental decisions. There will be a rush from developers to deliver the most robust amenity package in order to differentiate themselves from competition.
Additionally, I believe that development will begin to include more smart home features such as automated parcel delivery lockers and keyless entry, as well as being connected through Alexa or Google Home. Lastly, I anticipate that we will see heightened demand for bigger apartments. After spending months holed up in a small apartment, I believe that larger units will look increasingly more attractive, especially to young families.
How do you see the New York and New Jersey areas transforming in the future?
Sica: The New York City market will continue to battle rent control laws, which limit rent increases after owners make major improvements, even after units become vacant and the rents have not been raised for years. We believe these new rent regulations will cap expected revenue gains through the life of a property and will force developers to rethink their investment.
New Jersey and areas like Westchester County, N.Y., will remain an attractive place to live and, in turn, a great place to own multifamily. We believe Class A buildings with robust amenities and accessible rents will continue to be in demand. The live-work-play concept will be prominent in future development in these areas, and communities that on the far end of train lines from major cities will begin to see substantial growth and investment. Our goals continue to be to provide high quality, sustainable properties that meet the needs of our tenants and the communities we invest in. We will continue to search for properties in communities that we believe to be ascending.
Why are transit hub developments in high demand in the area?
Sica: Transit-oriented development has been the flavor of Northern New Jersey multi-development for some time now and for good reason. With demographic trends shifting more and more to demand for walkable cities and the proliferation of ride-sharing services, fewer people are owning cars and are looking for communities with multiple commuter options to major employment centers. Communities that offer shopping and dining in a downtown, walkable setting will continue to thrive. These are the most desirable development sites for good reason and the competition continues to increase, which makes strong opportunities harder to uncover.
An example of a transit hub development for us is our Project City Line in Bayonne. Bayonne offers exceptional access to the Hudson Light Rail System and will soon offer direct ferry access to New York City. Bayonne, unlike some of its Hudson County Waterfront neighbors, is still an attainable, cost-effective place to live, with tremendous walkability in a town with a strong sense of community. We believe that with a forward-thinking city government, Bayonne is poised for massive growth over the next 5 to 10 years.
What are your plans regarding transit-oriented development?
Sica: We are always seeking to uncover the right opportunities in markets like Montclair, Morristown, Summit, Jersey City and the Greater Hudson County, but demand and competition for these sites continues to be robust. We have begun to find some niche deals in communities that share many of these same characteristics but are a little further down a train line. These properties will offer residents greater value, which is a segment often overlooked in the Class A transit-oriented market in Northern New Jersey. A lot of these towns are just starting to see revitalization and the best is yet to come.
How has COVID-19 impacted your projects?
Sica: With all our projects, we are abiding by the guidance provided in the governor’s halt of all nonessential construction. Depending on where we are with a specific project in the development process, we have been affected differently. The toughest aspects for us have been regarding municipal shutdowns, staff shortages, increased workloads and budget restraints. Because of the current state, it has been increasingly difficult to get inspections or complete permitting.
The first few weeks of COVID-19 also saw a dramatic decrease in planning board/approval meetings. Some are now being done virtually, but missed meetings have pushed some deadlines back. Moving forward, any delays in elections could also have an impact on projects in the queue for approval, pushing back a lot of people’s expected timelines.
What measures are you taking to handle coronavirus-related business challenges?
Sica: From a business standpoint, we have policies and procedures in place to work remotely and we are perfectly set up to execute virtually. We are constantly working with our partners to monitor our tenant base and ensure we are meeting their needs. We have a team of accountants and lawyers that we are in constant contact with to ensure our projects are evaluating options from any new state or local laws, as well as review any potential federal stimulus packages that might affect our projects. Additionally, we are looking into new and innovative ways to show our apartments, i.e., virtual tours.
How do you expect the multifamily market to recover following the crisis?
Sica: The multifamily market, especially in this area, has always been one of the first sectors to recover from an economic downturn. During the Great Recession, multifamily rents were more resilient than those of office, industrial and retail. Multifamily rents have outperformed those of the other major property sectors during and after the Great Recession in multiple ways. The sector experienced the lowest level of rent decline, the fastest recovery to pre-recession peaks and the longest post-recession period of rent growth.
While the COVID-19 outbreak is very different from the last few recessions, we are seeing, anecdotally, that people now have even stronger respect and appreciation for having a nice place to live. Unemployment levels remain an uncertainty, but, for properties located around major employment centers within transit hubs, we believe these projects should fair better as we enter recovery. Also, we believe this crisis and economic downturn will have lasting negative effects on the already record-low levels of homeownership.

COVID-19’s Consumer Health Care Behaviors: Telehealth, Trauma, and Trust, via PwC
In a matter of several weeks, people living in the U.S. have endured massive personal social, emotional, physical and fiscal disruption due to the COVID-19 pandemic. State mandates to shelter at home, the adoption of wearing face masks and covers in public, and re-making dining tables and dens into home-working spaces for kids in school or parents telecommuting, American homes have morphed into petri dishes of people undergoing dramatic changes in a very short time.
A new report from PwC looks at peoples’ changes in health behaviors in the first two months of the pandemic, asking whether these changes will stick “after” the pandemic fades.
PwC compared peoples’ challenges in daily life preventing them for adopting a healthy lifestyle. Before the pandemic, the top obstacles to healthy living were mental health concerns, feeling isolated, too much time spent using technology, and a limited choice of healthy food options. Once the pandemic hit, “feeling isolated or lonely” spiked up, followed by access to a safe environment for exercise, too much time on technology, and that limited choice of healthy food.
But feeling isolated was surely the most impacted health risk, as the dotted line in the first chart graphs.
The usual challenges people felt in daily life for their physical and mental health blur into a person’s financial health — which impacts personal health/medical spending. 22% of health consumers told PwC they’re adjusting spending on medications, and 31% on healthcare visits. The latter has translated into doctors’ medical practices seeing less traffic/visits, and thus, less patient revenue, significantly impacting some PCPs’ and specialists’ businesses in the first quarter of 2020 and will do so well into the second quarter and beyond.
“Getting consumers to come back for care may depend on how much trust the health system can build with them over the next few months,” PwC notes in the report.
One healthcare flow consumers and clinicians have adopted in the COVID-19 pandemic is telehealth. Media covered “virtual queues” of patients waiting to “see” doctors via telemedicine channels in the earliest days of the coronavirus in Washington state, New York, New Jersey, and other hot spots in the early phase of the pandemic.
The circle chart graphs what occasioned consumers’ visits telehealth visits for the first time in the pandemic. People dealing with chronic conditions (single and complex) comprised two-thirds of the first-visits, followed by 12% of people using virtual channels for mental health.
While telehealth has become a popular benefit in employer-sponsored health insurance plans, PwC found that 10% of consumers said their companies were offering new telehealth options post-pandemic.
One-third of employers in this study expanded work-from-home, 19% information for dealing with the pandemic, 17% expanding sick leave, and 15% of companies offered more flexibility for caring for dependents.
Health Populi’s Hot Points: Another aspect of life is transforming in this pandemic journey across all of us: the nature of trust across the many touchpoints of our lives. Edelman has tracked eroding trust with institutions for the past several years. Those on the losing-trust roster have been governments, media, and of late, “each other” in terms of social networks and political/social chasms across the world.
Last year, the Edelman Trust Barometer found that consumers’ trust was highest with “my employer,” and in 2020, consumers seek competence and ethics from organizations and individuals wherever we can find those features.
In the COVID-19 era in the U.S., PwC found that the top sources for gathering health information were first, local news, followed by national news and the State government (ahead of the Federal government by 5 percentage points and local government by 6 points). These details and differences are shown in the bar chart.
In terms of trusted sources, these top three channels were also the most-trusted, albeit with far fewer fans. Primary care doctors were trusted by one-in-four people, but only sought as an information source by 1-in-10. Hospitals were marginally more likely sought for health information in the pandemic, and health plans and pharmacists even less so.
“Health system communication with patients tends to be transaction,” PwC observes in the report.
I must note once again the ethical/trusted human capital inherent in physicians, nurses and pharmacists, perennially found by Gallup in its annual survey on honesty and ethics in U.S. professions.
Our doctors and nurses are on the front-line of the “war” on COVID-19. These heroes of health care human capital were already in the depths of depression and burnout early in 2020, as learned by the annual Medscape study on the issue.
The coronavirus has only exacerbated U.S. clinicians’ well-being. The latest, heartbreaking example of this is the suicide of Dr. Lorna Breen, an ER doctor working in New York City and surviving COVID-19. She took her life last weekend at her family’s home in Virginia.
As her father, a fellow physician, told the New York Times, “She tried to do her job, and it killed her.”
The PwC study asks how our health behavior now in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic might persist. Surely, the epidemic of mental health after the current virus pandemic — with the marked spiking up of feeling isolated or lonely, and experiencing mental health concerns — will be with us long after a vaccine is discovered. This will be even more true for clinicians who have been supporting patients in ICUs, ERs, and clinics across America.
We’ll need a whole lot of services, especially enabled through telehealth and virtual channels, to help us deal with our anxiety, depression and stress ongoing. Optum, part of UnitedHealthcare, announced yesterday their intention to acquire AbleTo, one of the most mature tele-mental health providers. This will be part of the new normal for health care in America — and justifiably so.

AP Itemization: Proposed items and reworks
Liandry's Torment (reworked)
Haunting Guise(1500) + Kindlegem(800) + 700 = 3000
50 AP + 450 HP + 10% CDR
MADNESS (unchanged)
TORMENT (unchanged)
The changes are meant to make this item largely comparable to Black Cleaver. It has a very similar stat spread, and its passives function similarly to Black Cleaver's armor shred, helping its users deal more damage in prolonged fights, and especially to tankier opponents. Its build path should feel a little better for Bruisers, who need early HP to survive the fights they take, and the CDR should help a lot.
Bloodthirsty Chain (component)
Amp tome(435) + Ruby Crystal(400) + 465 = 1300
30 AP + 200 HP
After damaging an enemy champion, heal for 20 HP over 10s (damaging an enemy again does not stack or refresh the duration)
Just another AP/HP component to be used in some of the items below. I actually created the item below first and needed a component for it, but there's no passive in that item that can be shared with other items and thus be put on a component item. Instead, I drew inspiration from Spectre's Cowl, whose passive later 'evolves' into Spirit Visage's passive.
It's a simple item, intended to encourage frequent trades with a very short cooldown sustain effect.
Dragon-Shark Fangs (new item)
Sheen(1050) + Bloodthirsty Chain(1300) + 650 = 3000
40 AP + 350 HP + 10% CDR
SPELLBLADE - After casting a spell, your next AA marks your target. Marked targets bleed m.dmg equal to 50% base AD every 0.5s for 1.5s (total 150% base AD)
PURSUIT - If within 450 range (edge-to-edge) of a marked enemy as they bleed, gain 5% bonus mvspd for 0.5s and heal 5-20 (based on lvl) + 5% AP (total 15-60 + 15% AP per SPELLBLADE proc) (numbers definitely not set in stone).
This is the Triforce 'counterpart'. Let's compare:
Its SPELLBLADE procs do less damage. I imagine its users will still be good at split pushing, but a portion of the power has been shifted away from tower destruction to good 1v1 power with PURSUIT.
PURSUIT provides sticking power, just as RAGE does, though it doesn't slow. Users will have to rely on their kits for slows (which, to be fair, seem to more prevalent in AP kits anyway).
It has an entirely separate effect in its sustain.
I want to highlight the last point a little bit. More generally, this is a distinction I'd like there to be between AD and AP as stats: generally, Attack Damage should really be increasing the user's attack somehow, while Ability Power has more freedom to strengthen its users 'abilities', whether those be heals or shields or movement speed buffs or whatever. This goes back to the stated goal of introducing something new with AP Bruisers, rather than just creating Bruisers that happen to scale with AP. This will largely be up to champion kits, of course, but an item like this will hopefully aid the distinction.
Another inspiration for the sustain aspect was the desire to have some sort of AP scaling besides damage. As discussed in previous posts, Triforce encourages building as a Bruiser instead of building burst because its damage actually does not scale with items, unlike Lich Bane. In addition, having the SPELLBLADE proc do nothing but damage would make it too similar to both Triforce and Lich Bane.
A note: I like the thematic appeal of the SPELLBLADE proc causing the target to bleed and the user following it, like a shark - I don't know if it overcomplicates it though, and it does feel a little anti-thematic to have a tower 'bleed'. Having the bleed not apply to towers would significantly impact the tower-taking capabilities though... which could be acceptable. In the end, there are a number of paths we could take here, and there's no 'best' solution.
While I do have more ideas (that I will be sharing soon), I want to take a moment to discuss these two alone first.
In particular, I think we could stop here, so to speak. AD Bruiser itemization is very much defined by Black Cleaver and Triforce, and I think these items are sufficient counterparts. Just as many champions build either Black Cleaver or Triforce and then build full tank, many champions could build one or both of these items and then build full tank. These changes alone would already open up the AP Bruiser path to many champions.
So, who would build these items? Sylas is an obvious candidate for DSF, as is perhaps Mordekaiser (depending on his upcoming rework). Some less obvious candidates are Nautilus and Cho'Gath, who both have low cooldown abilities and incorporate AAs in their trade patterns, so they can proc SPELLBLADE easily. Even less obvious (perhaps) would be someone like Swain, whose kit does not heavily encourage AA-ing much on its own - but Iceborn Gauntlet is not an infrequent purchase for him, so I could see DSF on him, especially with Kleptomancy. On an even more off-meta note, even champions like Leona and Taric could probably have some fun with DSF in top lane.
For Liandry's, I imagine it would be a solid option in solo queue (where damage is favored) on certain juggernaut-like characters to help them lean into their damage. Examples could include Mundo, Tahm Kench, and Maokai. Note that, since Liandry's and DSF do not share a unique passive (unlike their AD counterparts), several of the champions listed above could build Liandry's as well, before or after DSF.
We really must conisder how certain unintended interactions though...
Tanky AP assassins? (Fizz and Ekko)
Though I never personally suffered from it, Fizz and Ekko once terrorized top lane. Their base damage was high enough that they could build tanky and still kill their targets, while their mobility allowed them to stick very easily to their targets. Meanwhile, since they built as tanks and they're naturally very slippery, they were impossible to kill.
I think it's reasonable to fear what they could do with these items. SPELLBLADE synergizes very well with both of them (which is evident in how Lich Bane is a standard 2nd item for both of them), and one could perhaps be afraid of them building DSF into tank.
However, I would say that Riot sufficiently adjusted both of their kits to the point where they need significant amounts of AP to do their job, and I do not think DSF => tank items would give them the damage they need. They could build Liandry's with DSF, and they might have some decent damage with MADNESS, but there is an inherent delay there that helps me not worry too much. All in all, even if Fizz and Ekko ended up buying these items, I don't think we would see an unhealthy damage output from either of them.
Mages who build Liandry's Torment (Zyra and Brand)
Though I only described my motivation in terms of AP Bruisers, I did have these mages in mind as well.
One thing I wanted to do was highlight the anti-tank intent of the item. Right now, although TORMENT helps users melt tanks, the item also has 75 AP that gives its users plenty of damage against squishies. It's a good generalist item for champions with sustained damage that can proc (i.e. Zyra's plants and Brand's burn), but I'd like to see its users make an actual choice between melting the frontline or bursting the squishies. Thus, I'm pushing Liandry's as the choice for the former option, and I'd make a new item for the latter option.
I won't be designing this item, at least not for now. Mage items as a whole could use some work, but that's all definitely out of the scope of this project. Still, it's worth noting the gap I'd be leaving in the item space.
Before I end for now, I have one more item I want to share.
Blood Demon Amulet (new item)
Bloodthirsty Chain(1300) + Amp Tome(435) + Ruby Crystal(400) + 665 = 2800
50 AP + 400 HP
RELEASE (60s cd)
If you take damage that brings your HP below 40% max HP, increase your max HP by 30% over the next 3s, in 6 ticks of 0.5s each, preserving your current % max HP at each tick.
Note: If you remain at 40% HP, this effectively means restoring 12% max HP.
Gain DEMON FURY after these 3s.
DEMON FURY
Gain 30% size.
Gain 0-30 AP, scaling linearly with % missing HP, from 0 AP at 60% max HP to 30 AP at 0% max HP.
Lasts for 6s. Then, return to normal.
This is my AP rendition of Sterak's Gage. I'd really like to be able to feel it out in-game. Does it actually help users survive burst? Is it too annoying on certain users? While it's hard for me to answer these questions without actually seeing it in-game, I can discuss who potential users would be as well as potential concerns and general thoughts I had when designing the item.
The item provides plenty of HP and AP, so it would be great on champions that scale well with both stats. It also thrives at low health, and ideal users should have some way of helping them survive at low health without dying so they can make good use of the passive.
Vladimir and Cho'Gath both scale well with HP and AP, and they have the sustain and health respectively to fight for a while.
Mundo, Volibear, and Tahm Kench all have great HP scalings and have something to help them out at low health.
Sylas and Swain scale great with AP and have great sustain to help them avoid dying.
I think this item could be good on all of the above champions and more. There is a possibility though that it's too good on Vladimir, and if it were balanced on Vladimir, it would be too weak on other champions who don't make as good use of everything it provides. It's also possible that the HP passive doesn't actually provide much anti-burst like the LIFELINE passive does, but it's hard to fix that on its own - simply increasing the HP % increase could easily be too strong for skills like Cho'Gath's ult.
Other thoughts:
I'm a little concerned the passive will be too frustrating to play against. Its intended users are arguably already frustating since some part of their kit makes them so hard to kill, and this item is inherently designed to further that. I hope that it would instead create exciting gameplay, as the user and their opponents dance around this passive.
The size increase could be helpful with the magic damage passive on Abyssal Mask.
I actually forgot about METALLICIZE, the active on Gargoyle Stoneplate (though I'm certain I subconsciously drew from it for this passive). I'm not certain if this item can coexist with Stoneplate, or if the items occupy the same niche. This is obviously more offensive than the other, but it's not clear that the niches are separate enough.
Obviously, all of these items could use some work, but I'm not sure how much more I can do withotu actually testing them in-game. Still, as I mentioned earlier, the reworked Liandry's Torment and Dragon-Shark Fangs would be a great start to AP Bruiser itemization.
I'll likely take a break for now - I may return to AP itemization at a later point, especially if I take the time to understand mages and want to tackle their items simultaneously. I've got some ideas for a Diana rework I'd like to mess with though, so my next game design post will likely be about her.
Until next time, pce out! =)

11 things you must do before 2019 begins!
Reading Time: 8 mins
2019 is just around the corner and though you might be winding down and getting ready for Christmas, there is still plenty that you could pack into 2018 to end the year on a serious high.
Don’t let the dark and cold stop you enjoying yourself. There’s loads going on that can enrich your life.
Here are 11 things you should do before 2019 begins…
1. Buy cheap tickets for West End shows
2. Get your self-assessment sorted
3. Avoid a £1,000 fine by updating your driving licence
4. Buy new stuff in the Boxing Day sales
5. Buy train tickets before the price hike
6. Go ice skating
7. Clear out your clutter
8. Catch up with old friends
9. Sort out your CV
10. Start your New Year’s resolutions
11. Start getting your finances in order
1. Buy cheap tickets for West End shows
Definitely do before New Year: each year Get Into London Theatre hold an annual ticket promotion run by the Society of London Theatre so you can get cheaper tickets for over 50 top London shows.
Tickets are on sale now for performances from 1st January to 13th February and must offer a discount of at least 25%! Tickets are either £10, £20, £30 or £40 depending on the show and there are no booking or postage fees.
So don’t wait to pay full price for your tickets, get yours at a discounted rate at Get Into London Theatre. Make this your opportunity to see Wicked or The Lion King or any other show you’ve been dying to see.
If you’d like to know how to get cheaper tickets all year round then read our article on how to find cheap and last minute theatre tickets.
2. Get your self-assessment sorted
If you’re self-employed and doing your tax returns online then the deadline is 31st January 2019 (if you’re doing a paper tax return you’re already late…the deadline was October 31st!)
Rather than waiting until January why don’t you take the weight off your mind and get it sorted out early? At least you won’t have to worry about getting any nasty fines!
Read our definitive guide to filing your tax return if you’re in any doubt.
3. Avoid a £1,000 fine by updating your driving licence
This definitely one to do before New Year so that you remember!
If you haven’t updated your driving licence for a while then make sure it is still in date – and has the right photo – before the new year.
You are legally required to update your licence and your photo every ten years or else you could be hit with a £1,000 fine! To renew your driving licence there is a £20 charge, and you can do so via the DVLA website.
Equally if you have changed your name or your address you must notify the DVLA or you could also face a fine. If you just need to change your name or address you can do so for free on the DVLA website.
Read our full article on renewing your driving licence here.
4. Buy new stuff in the boxing day sales
Knowing when to buy is the secret to being successful at this time of year. If you buy before Christmas you’re likely going to pay full price , but if you leave your buying until the new year the best bargains may be gone and prices will soon return to normal.
Your best bet is to hit the shops for the boxing day sales – all the prices will be down and you’ll be first in the queue for the best ones. Remember, these days it isn’t just about hitting the high street, don’t forget to shop online as well for, often, even better bargains!
In fact, even better (if you’re anti-social and hate the festive season anyway) is to start on the online sales on Christmas Eve. Yes. sounds wrong but loads of people are doing it and Christmas Day, rather sadly, is now one of the busiest days for online shopping!
5. Buy train tickets before the price hike
When it comes to buying train tickets, purchasing in advance should be your first port of call no-matter what time of the year. You can save a staggering amount if you book your tickets well before travelling.
But in January train prices will rise by 3.2% (twice the rate of inflation) so if you know what days you need to travel, start buying your tickets now and avoid the price hike.
You can also save by getting yourself a Railcard. These are open to people over 60, students, disabled, families and those in the South East region. They will take a third of your journey if you take the right trains. Take a look at Railcard.co.uk
To save money on tickets always use great sites such as thetrainline.com and Raileasy. It’s particularly handy to use Raileasy because they have a Split Ticket site where you can cut your train costs by buying two or more tickets that cover different parts of your journey. Bonkers, we know, but often if you do that you can get the journey much cheaper then if you had just bought one straight ticket!
6. Go ice skating
Ice skating is not something that many of us do regularly but December is the perfect month to give it a go. In London alone there are ice skating rinks at the National History Museum, in Hyde Park, the London Eye (‘Eyeskate’ – see what they did there?) and Hampton Court Palace to name but a few.
In Birmingham you can do it at Centenary Square, in Wales you can do it at the Celtic Manor, on Swansea seafront and at the Cardiff Winterwundercoverland. Outdoor skating rinks are all over the country so check online to see where your nearest one is.
Wherever you are there’s likely to be a rink somewhere near you so don’t let the opportunity pass you by. This is definitely one to do before New Year. You never know, you might just be a natural.
7. Clear out your clutter
It’s easy to let clutter build up over time and before you know it your house is filled with junk you no-longer want (especially after Christmas where people tend to buy you rubbish to add to your collection.)
As you know, we run the national Clear Your Clutter day in March (check out our Clear Your Clutter section here to see more) and we absolutely believe in saving and making money by shifting your junk, selling it, re-using and recycling and even swapping things you don’t need with your friends and neighbours.
Sort out your house and get rid of the things you no-longer want so you can enter the new year with a nice clean house. Don’t throw your things out though – remember, one man’s junk is another man’s treasure.
A lot of people sell junk and unwanted presents in January but if you do yours now you will have a better chance of making sensible money. Some of your stuff might make good Christmas presents that others will buy.
youtube
If you’ve got a lot of stuff to sell you could have a car boot sale – for more information read our article on turning your trash into cash with a car boot sale.
If you’ve got a load of old CDs, DVDs and games then you could trade them into a second hand shop or sell them online. There are some great sites to sell your stuff on such as Amazon and eBay.
8. Catch up with old friends
In the hustle and bustle of everyday life it’s very easy to drift apart from people you are close to and before you know it weeks, months and even years have passed since you last spoke to them.
One big think you should do before new year is to phone an old friend who you’ve lost contact with and find out how they are. Or if you’re a big social media user send them a private message and re-initiate contact that way. What better way is there to enter the new year with an old friend back at your side.
9. Sort out your CV
If you’re in regular employment then your CV may have been left to accumulate dust but it’s always a good idea to keep things up-to-date.
Obviously you never know what’s around the corner so it’s better to have your CV updated for when you need it. But on a positive note if you keep your CV online (as many do these days) and regularly updated then you might find yourself getting headhunted. Even if you don’t want to leave your current job, it’s a good way to negotiate yourself a pay rise!
A new year and a freshly updated CV should go hand in hand, so read our article on how to write a killer CV.
10. Start your New Year’s resolutions
No, we’re not making a mistake, we really do think you should start your New Year’s resolutions before the new year actually gets here.
Really it makes more sense to start now, after all starting on January 1st after you’ve stayed up late and likely drunk too much the night before, is probably not the best time to make decisions about life changes.
Plus it will mean you can approach Christmas feeling healthy and fresh rather than letting yourself get all bloated and then punishing yourself for it over the first few months of the new year.
For more information read our five reasons you should start your New Years resolutions,
Or
Vital tips for keeping your 2019 New Years resolutions
11. Start getting your finances in order
Ok, this one is easier said than done, but start making a conscious effort to get your finances in order so that when the new year comes you’ll at least be in a better position than you were the year before.
Do a bit of research, find out if you could get better deals by switching – did you know, for example, that 98.8% of customers can save money by switching their energy provider?
If all you do before the new year gets here is formulate a plan with clear aims (such as saving a certain amount, or thinking of an extra way to make money), you’ll be in a better position than if you do nothing!
Even doing a small thing like subscribing to our newsletter (wink, wink, nudge, nudge) can make a big difference as you’ll have regular money-making and money-saving ideas sent to you each week throughout the year, as well as the best bargains and important financial reminders.

A few weeks ago, Alon contacted me and asked me the following:
It so happened that I'm currently working on scaling some Python app. Specifically, now I'm trying to figure out the best way to scale SSH connections - when one server has to connect to thousands (or even tens of thousands) of remote machines in a short period of time (say, several minutes).
How would you write an application that does that in a scalable way?
Alon is using such an application to gather information on the hosts it connects to, though that's not important in this case.
In a series of blog post, I'd like to help Alon solve this problem! We're gonna write an application that can manage millions of hosts.
Well, if you have enough hardware, obviously.
The job
Writing a Python application that connects to a host by ssh can be done using, for example, Paramiko. That will not be the focus of this blog post since it is pretty straightforward to do.
To keep this exercise simple, we'll just use a ping function that looks like this:
import subprocess def ping(hostname): p = subprocess.Popen(["ping", "-c", "3", "-w", "1", hostname], stdout=subprocess.DEVNULL, stderr=subprocess.DEVNULL) return p.wait() == 0
The function ping returns True if the host is reachable and alive, or False if an error occurs (bad hostname, network unreachable, ping timeout, etc.). We're also not trying to make ping fast by specifying a lower timeout or a smaller number of packets. The goal is to scale this task while knowing it takes time to execute.
So ping is going to be the job to be executed by our application. It'll replace ssh in this example, but you'll see it'll be easy to replace it with any other job you might have.
We're going to use this job to accomplish a bigger mission: determine which hosts in my home network are up:
for i in range(255): ip = "192.168.2.%d" % i if ping(ip): print("%s is alive" % ip)
Running this program alone and pinging all 255 IP addresses takes more than 10 minutes.
It is pretty slow because each time we ping a host, we wait for the ping to succeed or timeout before starting the next ping. So if you need 3 seconds to ping each host in average, then to ping 255 nodes you'll need 5 seconds × 255 = 765 seconds and that's more than 12 minutes.
The solution
If 255 hosts need 12 minutes to be pinged, you can imagine how long it's going to be when we're going to test which hosts are alive on the IPv4 Internet – 4 294 967 296 addresses to ping!
Since those ping (or ssh) jobs are not CPU intensive, we can consider that one multi-processor host is going to be powerful enough – at least for a beginning.
The real issue here currently is that those tasks are I/O intensive and executing them serially is very long.
So let's run them in parallel!
To do this, we're going to use threads. Threads are not efficient in Python when your tasks are CPU intensive, but in case of blocking I/O, they are good enough.
Using concurrent.futures
With concurrent.futures, it's easy to manage a pool of threads and schedule the execution of tasks. Here's how we're going to do it:
import functools from concurrent import futures import subprocess def ping(hostname): p = subprocess.Popen(["ping", "-q", "-c", "3", "-W", "1", hostname], stdout=subprocess.DEVNULL, stderr=subprocess.DEVNULL) return p.wait() == 0 with futures.ThreadPoolExecutor(max_workers=4) as executor: futs = [ (host, executor.submit(functools.partial(ping, host))) for host in ("192.168.2.%d" % i for i in range(255)) ] for ip, f in futs: if f.result(): print("%s is alive" % ip)
The ThreadPoolExecutor is an engine, called executor, that allows us to submit tasks to it. Each task submitted is put into an internal queue using the executor.submit method. This method takes a function to execute as argument.
Then, the executor pulls jobs out of its queue and execute them. In order to execute them, it starts a thread that is going to be responsible for the execution. The maximum number of threads to start is controlled by the max_workers parameters.
executor.submit returns a Future object, that holds the future result of the submitted task. Future objects expose methods to know if the task is finished or not; here we just use Future.result() to get the result. This method will block until the result is ready.
There's no magic recipe to find how many max workers you should use. It really depends on the nature of the tasks that are submitted. In this case, using a value of 4 brings down the execution time to 3 minutes – roughly 12 minutes divided by 4, which makes sense. Setting the max_workers to 255 (i.e. the number of tasks submitted) will make all the pings started at the same time, producing a CPU usage spike, but bringing down the total execution time to less than 5 seconds!
Obviously, you wouldn't be able to start 4 billion threads in parallel, but if your system is big and fast enough, and your task using more I/O than CPU, you can use a pretty high value in this case. The memory should also be taken into account – in this case, it's very low since the ping task is not using a lot of memory.
Just a first step
As already said, this ping job does not use a lot of CPU time or I/O bandwidth, neither would the original ssh case by Alon. However, if that would be the case, this method would be limited pretty quickly. Threads are not always the best option to maximize your throughput, especially with Python.
These are just the first steps of the distribution and scalability mechanism that you can implement using Python. There are a few other options available on top of this mechanism – I've covered those in my book Scaling Python, if you're interested in learning more!
Until then, stay tuned for the next article of this series!
