Strawberry, 37, married, pan genderqueer afab, she/her or w/e really
Made this blog with the express purpose of just having a space to gather shiny things that make me smile, since literally all my other social media has degraded into constant living hell. Still working on finding peace and not falling into the "there's horrible things happening in the world and therefore I have to make that my entire personality" trap.
❤️ Harry Potter / ❌ JKR and all TERFs
Will I be safe here?
This blog is a mess of fandoms and topics, but if you'd like to hang around I'd like to assure you that it is safe here regardless of your race, sex, gender, orientation, religion, or the place you were born. I'm only human, though, so if I ever mess up please tell me!
To be especially clear (because there's a lot of spaces out there being exclusionary right), now that means this blog IS safe for you if you're transfem, transmasc, nonbinary or genderqueer of any expression, a woman, a man, an intersex person regardless of if you're part of the queer community, a queer person whose partner is of the "opposite" sex and/or gender, Jewish, or from Israel.
However, this blog is NOT safe for you if you're racist, a TERF, hate men, hate women, transphobic, gatekeep the queer community, support Hamas, antisemitic, an anti, tell people to kill themselves, or voted for Trump. Please keep this in mind if you fall under any of these labels, as this blog will occasionally come for you and I will happily block anyone who threatens to make this space unsafe.

My problem with so much of politics is that so many people are lead by their emotions about something instead of stopping to think rationally about anything
Like this stupid communism bill in Florida like listen…you will never catch me being a commie I know that’s controversial on tumblr dot com but I simply am not a communism girlie and I never will be. But creating a bill to force KINDERGARTENERS to learn about the ~evils of communism~ is so fucking weird. Especially when it’s coming from the same party of people who insist that a child seeing a rainbow in a classroom is them being brainwashed by gays
And of course you’ve got people who escaped communist regimes supporting this bill and I of course am not diminishing what they went through and how they feel about it, but at the same time there is such a clear agenda in this bill to force literal children into one mindset and it’s gross! It’s creepy and weird and everything they accuse queer people of doing!
And I don’t trust these people to share an accurate history of communism because these are also the same people who made it actual curriculum to teach that slavery “had many benefits to black people”
I am genuinely so afraid for the kids going to school in this state because I highly doubt anyone outside of school is taking the time to teach them correct history. Or science. Or literally any subject. And you hear it all the time how in general the kids in school today are not doing well like it’s BAD out here. And you already see the effects of it all around like these young people are lacking so much education in so many areas hell I’m seeing it in adults too we really are as a society so so stupid there’s no other way to say it.
Anyway that’s my rant for the day

warning: this page contains a lot of cursing
i am also pretty much an asshole so you are warned and don't be surprised later.
my name is Sol or Eden. my pronouns are he/they/it. i am 18+.
i'm not a native english speaker and i've never lived in an english-speaking country. even though i know the language pretty well, not sure i'm gonna bother to check how i write here all that much.
i am queer disabled person and i don't owe you any information besides what i'm ready to tell(and it's not all the information about my identities or diagnoses). well, that principles work pretty much for everything on this page.
so, my diagnoses, i am okay to tell you about. all in one way or another (depending on what is accessible to me) professionally diagnosed, unless specified otherwise.
neurodevelopmental disorders:
[dots in the middle of lines used to separate each point]
• autism
• adhd - combined presentation
• chronic tic disorder - motor tics
• most likely dyslexia, but i never had a chance to talk to a professional who can diagnose this particular disorder
mental illnesses:
• bipolar disorder
• ocd
• clinical anxiety, social anxiety and panic attacks, but i don't have a specified diagnosis, because it is way too complicated and not exactly important with that many others
• dissociative identify disorder
• borderline personality disorder
• avoidant personality disorder
• narcissistic personality disorder
• eating disorders - atypical anorexia and bulimia
• maladaptive daydreaming - important note: it is not recognised by diagnostic manuals as a disorder as of now, but recognised by medical community backed by research
physical disabilities:
• fibromyalgia
• chronic fatigue syndrome
• chronic migraines
• osteoarthritis in an ankle - it may not exactly be considered as full mode-on disability, but actually annoying as hell in way it fucks with my life from time to time
• some unknown shithole of an illness that has been destroying a whole fucking lot for over a year in my life and health and i still don't know what the fuck this is
if someone decides to go and be like "well, that's too many disorders" and then shit on me(and someone else in the same situation for that matter, which i've seen happen to lots of people):
1) learn about rates of comorbidity(coexistence basically) of different disorders and ways they form(yep, for many of them reasons are pretty much the same or existence of one can higher the chances of another)
2) you don't know shit about anyone`s medical history and anyone`s family's medical history, so you have no idea about the hereditary or any genetics-related stuff
3) you don't know anyone`s real life history
and actually, you just don't know jack shit about up-to-date information about most/all of these disorders and don't care about it, are being a pathetic worthless noisy fucker whose opinion no one asked and simply an asshole for the sake of being an asshole. maybe, extra asshole if you actually know, that you're wrong.
i can post about queerness, disabilities, psychology, psychiatry, other medical fields, social and political issues and just random stuff. sometimes i can post personal experience or opinions and sometimes scientific information. or there may be posts with a mix of these. i'll try to mark scientific information as clearly as possible and post resources within my ability. i may decide to post(and even repost, which i'm not fond of in most other topics) random fandom stuff.
i am a refugee immigrant and i'm not telling you anything else, like where i grew up or where i live, unless i decide so myself.
i don't like a lot of social media "rules" (culture?), including the tumblr one.
for example, firstly, i don't like how people just don't understand what nuance means and whatever the fuck this is with absolute statements on every single topic. (and i'm not talking about centrist bullshit, when it comes to basic rights, i mean, like, everything.)
secondly, i don't like that shit ton of discourses that happen again and again. doesn't mean i don't have opinions on the topics or won't post anything about them, but unless i am specifically in an argumentative mood, me saying something doesn't mean i would like to argue with someone (i will just block and won't care what anyone thinks about this kind of politics on my page).
thirdly, if i don't talk about some issues, but talk about others, it means just that, nothing else. no one, and i mean no one, talks about every single important issue in the world. even organisations with lots of people in them whose work this is. just some issues become "popular" to talk about, and it means everyone has to or else, and other issues... well, not as important or what the fuck ever.
finally (well, for now, that's actually only a fracture of problems), i don't have "don't interact" list, because i see it as pretty pointless and sometimes even counterproductive, so i'll just block whomever i'd like to.
if you deem me "problematic" and/or don't like me, i don't fucking care, you can just close the page and even use freely available block button.

Agree with this for the most part, but I am in no way violent. *chews on a telephone wire with my sharp teeth*, now down to business.
My issue with UKJ and Zora is that it was used as a way to redeem him. I don't care who he dates or fucks, I've drawn his fat lemur ass getting railed before. But the way the show uses Zora to make him "good" is lazy, uncreative, and a problematic trope. Perpetuating the idea that "you only need love, then you will be a good person" is just the whole "I can fix him" narrative in a different point of view. Being in love with someone doesn't automatically fix you, or make you a better person. Those things take time, effort, and a WILLINGNESS TO CHANGE AND IMPROVE. The way it's presented in the show is so jarring and sudden. Like what? One day he gives up on his hopes and dreams of murdering his nephew because he went ogga bogga at tall woman? No. That's lazy on the writers part. I know they just wanted him at Clover's wedding, but I feel like it would have been better if they cut the whole forced romance shit with Zora and made him attend with a character he actually has history with....CRIMSON!!!!!! He could have been her (platonic) plus one, and be giving KJ dirty looks the whole time. KJ is completely oblivious and hilarious hijinks ensues. But no. Madagascar fan blog on tumblr dot com operation-penguin can't have nice things *pouts so hard my dick explodes*.
Also "craving masculinity" doesn't mean he's queer. If anything Zora is presented as the most feminine out of all the mountain lemurs (and also aside from clover, crimson and a few others, most of the lady lemurs look very similar to the male ones meaning that this probably isn't much of a deviation from the norm). Zora's most "masculine" features are her hight, deep voice, and "gross"/violent behavior. Liking any of these things in a woman doesn't make you queer. This is of course looking at her with the most generous view. Tbh I don't like Zora at all. She's nothing but a romantic plot point for two of the male characters, and she's obviously meant to embody a mean spirited joke at "masculine" women. At times characters like her feel very transphobic, like "HAHAHAH the WOMAN is sooooo FUNNY.... WHY?? she behaves like a MAN and looks like a MAN!!! HAHAHAHH SO FUNNY SO FUNNY HAHAHHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!" She feels particularly odd in specifically AHKJ because of how outwardly queer KJ himself is.
Am I saying that a female character can't be masculine or exhibit masculine traits? No. If that's how anyone is going to try and spin this you're either taking my words in bad faith, or didn't read any of this. Female characters (and male, enby, or any other gender of the vast spectrum) can and should be written in a way that isn't restricted to a small box of whatever the fuck "feminine" or "masculine" is, it's a fucking goodie bag put whatever the hell you want in them. But when you are taking a character and subverting expectations for their gender as a way to get cheep laughs it's pathetic. Such low hanging fruit and it's rotten. Unfunny, did not laugh, do better.
Also you need a straight man to enhance the wild cards. I won't tolerate Maurice hate.
But.....
you 🤝 me
Jover bad
So like ur cool <3 no hate brother
ok ive never done this befroe and dont even know if these are hot takes but anyways ALSO IM SORRY I SAY LIKE ALOT
i feel like alot of the girl ahkj villains all have something to do w being married if u get me and idk i just dont like it 😭

MAURICE LORE IS SO IGNORED LIKE THE FUNNY MADAGASCAR GUY WAS ACTUALLY SUPPOSED TO BE THROWN INTO A VOLCANO AS A BABY FOR LIVING BELLS AND THESE LIVING BELLS TURN OUT TO BE SNAILS HIDING FROM FRNECH PEOPEL AND IVE SEEN LIKE 2 POEPLE TALK ABOUT IT
ok thats it im so bad at unpopular opinions
also idk how to make this anonymous so
Yea ur right about the girls, tbh the way women in the whole franchise are treated just like romance objects for the male characters :/// even clover, although I do think she's treated the best. Still, her arc is concluded with her marrying sage....
UKJ IS MY FAVORITE I WANT HIM BEATEN AND BRUISED, BLEEDING OUT ONTO PAVEMENT!!!!! Him and Zora SHOULD NOT HAVE GOTTEN TOGETHER!!!!!!!! THAT WASN'T A REDEMPTION ARC. He's still evil, he still wants his nephew DEAD. Also he's one of the only characters in the show to use the word "sexy". (This is shameless self promo for my fic<3)
I'm pretty neutral on shipping tbh, I don't really care?? But I definitely don't ship them, they are friends <3
Mort has standards, my husband has never done anything wrong shut up.
MAURICE LORE IS WILD!!!! Idk why he's not more popular??? Only love for Maurice on this blog :]
Also I may have anon asks turned off??? Oops O_o sorry if you get the FBI sent to your house over this. Btw don't apologize about writing a lot, have you seen my posts talking about mort HAHAHAHAH-

The History of Queer (on Tumblr)
So a while ago I had someone ask “what is the whole history of queer then? Because I looked at it and decided it was a terrible bad word” and well, the history of it does kinda suck. But a lot of that history is not including the specific history of ‘Queer’ on tumblr. Before tumblr... Queer was everywhere! But this got pretty long and so it’s going under a read more now:
Essentially what’s happening is a bunch of TERF’s decided that they did not like how all-encompassing the word ‘queer’ was now. How it included EVERYONE in the community and excluded NO ONE. Well, this just would not do, they are gatekeepers at heart, after all, so you can’t have a word that so easily and efficiently includes EVERYONE in it! So on tumblr they began to remind everyone ‘queer is a slur uwu!!’
The problem with this is, of course, at one time it was indeed a slur. They point us to the early 1900′s-1970′s, but conveniently ignore the reclamation movement of the 80′s and 90′s, where we fully reclaim the word ‘queer’.
Enough terfs are able to infiltrate different spaces that messages like that still spread. They did not seem to be bigoted, they seemed like all the other “gentle reminders” that floated around a few years ago. It’s super important to note too, at this point? Queer had been so fully reclaimed that it was used as the topic name for literature and study (queer theory, queer literature, queer film, queer history etc.).
People do not use slurs for Acadamia in that way (i.e. you see African American History/Film/Literature/etc. etc. etc., not N***** History. Because the latter would be HUGELY inappropriate.) The specific use of the word queer indicates that no one is viewing it as a slur anymore.
Now enter the newest gatekeeping and exclusionary movement: The Aspec-Exclusion movement! It’s very easy to run exclusionism nowadays, because all you have to do is take all of the arguments from the last exclusionary movement, and apply it to your own. Swap the groups out. The previous exclusion movement (and still on going today) was the bi-exclusion movement and the one before that was the trans-exclusion movement.
This means they reached back to the original TERF movements to exclude aspecs (and even straight back into plain old homophobia!), and of course, a LOT of TERF’s are also exclusionists (because that is what they’ve been doing, and all the arguments were borrowed from them and therefore extremely familiar to them already). In fact, they were the foundation for each of the Exclusionary movements we’ve seen, at least specifically on tumblr.
With the Terf’s “gently reminding” everyone that “queer is a slur and u should never use it” it began to leak into that movement as well, and quickly flooded all through exclusionist ranks Now they begin to attack anyone who does not censor out the word ‘slur’ and ‘gently remind’ people as well. Despite stealing all their arguments from terfs, having an inordinate number in their ranks, and repeatedly expressing they hoped violence would befall aspec people and being full rape apologists, a lot of people on tumblr don’t... really care if the person they reblogged from is an aphobe and decided they must know what they’re talking about despite being teenagers mostly, and therefore very easily manipulated.
Also with the ‘always listen to the person in the oppressed group, but only if they agree with me, specifically’ mentality they seem to have. Numerous actual queer people have said ‘the resurgence of ‘queer is a slur’ is directly from terfs and our identity is not a slur, also every word we will ever have or use is a slur or was a slur, or was taken from a slur at some point’, but because what we said was different from what they already had been told... well. Many people on this site suck at ‘grey area’, and have a massively black and white view of the world (not uncommon with teens though), and if the previous information was from someone they cared about and trusted... well it’s pretty likely they’re going to assume their friend was right over this person, or the fifty other people saying it.
Now we’ve got this new movement on our hands then. A whole lot of teenagers, many of whom have been called queer 0 times in their lives (but probably saw the everything bad is gay’ thing the straights did a while back) are screaming about how it’s a slur to everyone and anyone who will listen. It’s no longer a “gentle reminder uwu”, it’s “What, you id as queer? How embaressing LMAO you’re an adult, don’t you know that’s a SLUR”, or coming on to posts by queer people that say “I love using queer because it simplifies things for me!” and saying “UH JUST REMEMBER: IT’S A FUCKING SLUR!”.
Queer positivity cannot exist any more on the site without someone inevitably reminding you that your identity is a slur and that you should never, ever use it for others, and in many cases, you should never use it for yourself.
What is happening is called ‘Re-weaponization”. Weaponization is the conversion of something into a weapon. Well Queer was a weapon up until the mid 80′s, but it wasn’t any more, no one used it as a weapon now, or at least VERY few people did because it no longer held the same power or weight. We used it as our armour now. It’s not as insulting to yell ‘Queer!’ at someone when they simply yell back ‘Yeah? And?’.
Well, now we have a movement on tumblr -the anti-Queer movement- that wants to take that armour, reforge it into a weapon, and put it back into the hands of straight people. If there is one thing I have learned, it’s that using the word they hurl at you as your armour makes that word hurt less. If someone said ‘hey queer!’ at me I would not be that upset by it because. Yeah? I am queer? What’s your point? And no, not everyone HAS to reclaim it. But you do have to stop criticizing the people who DO use it, and you can leave it with ‘I’m not comfortable reclaiming the word for myself’. You never have to go into detail. But you DO have to accept that a lot of us LOVE queer, and that we have EVERY DAMN RIGHT to love and to use that word for ourselves as our armour against the word. Straight people can’t hurt me with it if I make it a part of me.
To even so much as demand we censor the word for you (when you can easily download a NUMBER of internet and browser extensions that will do that FOR you), is to attempt to reweaponize the word. To demand we censor ourselves instead of letting us live out loud and proud is to attempt to reweaponize the word. To demand WE not use it for OURSELVES, to insist you will ‘never use that word’ when someone tells you ‘this is my identity’? Yup! You’re reweaponizing it!
And you especially have no business doing this if you were never actually called queer. You have no business doing this if queer was never even a slur in your country. And yeah, I have seen that. One of my abusive former friends did this quite a lot, he was not from a country where queer was a slur, it had NEVER been a slur there, but he INSISTED no one be allowed to use the word EVER and said ‘I’m not using a slur to refer to people’. He also simultaniously called himself a gay f*g, both words of which ALSO began as slurs, but interestingly enough no one is telling people not to reclaim or use THOSE words, and it is 100% because terfs want to use those words themselves, and it was terfs who began the anti-queer push on tumblr.

So, now that I’ve processed THAT POST and the insanity behind it that made me spend the last week having panic attacks, followed by flashing back to all the traumatic shit I dealt with in the last 10 or so years thanks to people with similar mentalities to the puritanical, power-hungry demons on this site. Except that was in real life, and I can’t handle this crap anymore.
This year, I finally reached the breaking point to the extent that my family had to stop pretending I’m not damaged. I still can’t go to therapy, but I am taking anti-anxiety/depressants now. One of the things that elevated my already-high stress level was The Old Guard fandom and the toxic environment that killed the one joy I had last year.
What was that? Seeing a movie with an un-stereotyped, irreligious, artistic queer North African man who looks like a male version of me. Seeing him in a loving relationship with a fellow Mediterranean, like so many of the couples I grew up around, parents of ethnically mixed friends I had. I came into the TOG fandom, excited, immediately making posts of facts, translations, seeking out other MENA/Mediterranean people to connect with, because fuck has it been lonely.
And I did. Very briefly. Before shit went to hell because of Hélène and her circle of tyrannical friends.
I still can’t believe they were allowed to get away with this.
I went out of my way to write ridiculously detailed posts on MENA culture, history, language and religion, answer so many questions, with links and details that could only come from someone who grew up with this stuff and spoke Arabic. And I had people questioning my validity??? Talking shit about me, bullying me, or even trying to discredit me because I *gasp* stated a fact that upset their racist headcanons.
Meanwhile, a very Americanized Rich White French Woman, was allowed to get away with constantly changing her ethnicity, religion, economic status, skin tone, family history, make up insane contradicting stories of suffering, and claiming oppression points from so many unrelated demographics. Not just that, she got to peddle racist bullshit as fact, frame the Amazigh of Morocco as if they’re Native Americans, all the way down to the claims that her grandfather was a ‘shaman’, when that couldn’t be farther from the truth. That, and applying Black American stereotypes, experiences, and issues to MENA people, especially to herself.
And use the ‘I’m insert minority’ excuse to get away with being an unrepentant monster.
I smelled a rat ages ago, but any time I expressed it to someone they didn’t believe me, and then when I saw what happened to my friend after he DM’d her as a ‘fellow Moroccan’, the horrific shit that was mobilized against him that chased him off the site, I knew I couldn’t handle what would happen to me if I tried to question her bullshit. The stress this fandom gave me was much more than what I had managed to stomach all these years and I had reached a breaking point.
So, I left. I let them have my only representation in exchange for my sanity. I canceled all my remaining Joe-centric/culture posts and fic ideas for TOG and told myself to never let myself forget that I’m not welcome anywhere.
Oh, and these tweets?
They’re about me and nizarnizarblr, who was run off the site. I’m ‘an anti-arab fanatic’ for saying North Africans aren’t Arabs and that our dialects can be barely intelligible to actual Arabs. And he was a ‘rabid nationalist’ for saying the same things as me. We made large educational posts about OUR part of the world, OUR cultures, OUR experiences and that wasn’t approved by the Western Liberals of Tumblr dot com.
She fucking slandered us on a site known for mass-bullying campaigns and suicide-baiting people, called us these inflammatory terms because we actually knew what we were talking about. She used hot-button political terms to stoke mindless hatred against us, the people she was racefaking as.
This RICH WHITE WESTERN WOMAN hated that there were actual North Africans in the space she wanted to rule over, who could ‘threaten’ her position as the authority and token, and that us contradicting her could get her exposed, so she fucking weaponized her following.
DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW DANGEROUS THIS IS? DO I NEED TO EXPLAIN TO YOU HOW RACIST THIS IS? SHE COULD HAVE RUINED OUR LIVES!
The thing that had briefly brought me joy, encouraged me to write two enormous fics after a period of writer’s block, now makes me sick. The one space I should have belonged in could have killed me.
I, someone that actually shares Joe’s background and has been told I look like a female version of him, got suspicion, disrespect, hostility and chased out of the fandom along with fuck knows how many other Brown/Muslim people under the command of the embodiment of privilege and her cronies, that loved getting the platform to abuse others because they used her words as gospel.
Where are they now? The Anglo/North Euro women that appointed themselves the authority on how to write a MENA man, who tried to tell actual MENA/Muslim people in the fandom how he should be portrayed to the extent of organizing smear campaigns against us when we defied their authority? Why are they all suddenly so quiet when you couldn’t pay them to shut them up?
There was no way you could be friends with someone like Hélène, in groupchats with her for months, and praising her to high heaven for giving you ‘sources’ and ‘sensitivity reads’ and not know what kind of person she was. Considering they all were just as vicious and racist, xenophobic and antisemitic, they must have agreed. That’s why they defended her, went around DM’ing people to delete their reblogs of the exposé. It’s not that they didn’t believe the overwhelming amount of evidence, it’s that they were panicking about losing the pedestal she afforded them.
I ASK AGAIN: Why were they so horrible to actual MENA/Mediterranean/Muslim people yet had their head completely up her arse when she claimed to be ALL THREE. What made her so special? Why did she get sanctified while everyone actually part of those demographics was demonized?
They knew. The whole time they knew. This was all done to give her and her chosen few complete control of a fanbase, where their word was law and any deviation got you witch-hunted out.
Now that their golden goose of consequence-free tyranny had been scratched, they’ve switched to trying to deflect from the point of that post -- that she’s a sickeningly horrible person -- and are making it about the dumbest fandom shit imaginable.
This isn’t about that fucking half-baked movie. This about all the shit she’s done over the years and continued doing within the community that was built around it. Helene and her shithead friends, used her race-faking and lying about every part of her identity and background, and a fictional MENA man as their carte blanche to abuse others, when they HAD NO RIGHT OR SAY IN THE MATTER.
This woman didn’t just spend years lying about being poor to con people out of money, spouting tankie shit, being a genocide denier, a 9/11 truther, cycling through ethnicities, religions, backgrounds, pretending to be like 2 different types of Jewish while being antisemitic, spreading wrong cultural shit she Googled wrong as fact, a racist and a race-faker, who brown-faced and seemed to be bordering on digital blackface as well, I know I’m forgetting a bunch of other shit because HOLY FUCK!
This woman went about everything with a baffling amount of confidence, while I and so many others never disclosed our backgrounds, until this fanbase demanded it, out of the need to feel safe from racial abuse. Yet, she was basically pretending to be me and got popular off it.
She called Marwan Kenzari a slur that makes me sick, that is not a word that comes up randomly, especially the way she used it. It has to be something you say regularly, without hesitation, for it to be the first thing that comes to mind. Also, that image of him? The one that stirred up that hideous response from her? In it he looks like my dad, moustache, brown jacket, cropped hair and all. So, kosomik ya Helene.
The fact that her URL is ‘lgbtmazight’ when she isn’t anything of the sort is sickening. She couldn’t be arsed to check where Marrakech is or what color it was for her racefaking tall tales, or check that there tens of millions of Amazigh people in Morocco alone, or even understand that there are no literal translations, so NO ONE is using tbarkallah as a fucking mic-drop.
Seriously, she put no effort into this and everyone believed her.
And there are people defending her. How evil do you have to be to think there’s nothing wrong with any of this? Stop fucking making it about two fictional characters and think about the REAL PEOPLE THIS HAS AFFECTED!
I hope everyone that tagged her as or used her as a source deletes her posts off their blog, I hope no one recommends her wrong and racist posts as info, I hope anyone who claims she was their ‘sensitivity reader’ removes her name, I hope no one believes any of the shit she said or has their view of MENA people and culture shaped by her.
It’s the least you could do.

What are your thoughts on fanfic writing in the f1 fandom? I am pretty sure I saw you tweet about it at some point something small but I was too scared to interact with you on it over at twitter :D
So, this is a hotter topic than I’d really like it to be on my Tumblr and it’s my own fault but. Here we go.
RPF has some questionable ethics and some even more questionable origins. I’m ancient enough that it just used to get straight-up published as a ‘5 minute fantasy’ in young women and girls’ magazines where you’d get like, some 15 year old’s daydream about meeting a boyband member on holiday and falling in love and this was for some reason just treated as an absolutely normal bit of publishing not like ‘what the hell, that would be illegal’ and ‘why is this the fantasy we are encouraging girls to have as an ambition when it comes to sports or even pop success’ and y’know.
Anyway, the 90s: really can’t emphasise enough how fucking weird having only a few sources to get your media from makes them.
Back to RPF; its roots are in political obscenity, if you want to talk about the bawdy stuff. The French Revolution, in particularly, wrote lots of erotica (the kinkier the better) about the royal family as part of refusing to acknowledge their divine rights under the church. It was an anarchical refusal to accept the situation as it was and to undermine it.
Beyond that you’ve got historical fiction - Thucydides was all about working up a really good narrative take* on the Peloponnesian war back in the fifth century BC. Extra scenes, big dialogue, you know. If he’d known about self-lubricating buttholes then you BET Herodotus would have put them in the Histories.
Point is: writing fiction about real people isn’t really that weird, Shakespeare did a load of it. But we tend to problematise RPF and consider it strange, even amongst fanfiction.
Now, to 21st century sports and specifically F1. We speak here on Tumblr dot com, the audience where F1 fans skew most largely LGBT, non-cis and female or non binary rather than every other platform which is full of cis het men. Here is where we talk about fanfic. Because they don’t know we’re here, I assume, is the logic.
(they kinda don’t, to be fair)
Most of us do not see ourselves in sports. Most sports media is not aimed at the way that a lot of us were socialised to engage with stuff and most of us - lucky buggers like me aside - do not get to write the narratives of the way sport is engaged with or talked about or who does it.
A lot of us who live here on god’s abandoned internet have drifted in and out of fandoms and a lot of that will have involved engaging with fanfiction. Fanfiction is a really fun sandbox to play in, as an adult - we get told to stop playing, as we grow up and it’s no surprise that we still want to.
There’s a six monthly cycle of some AAA game that asks the question “is shooting people bad?” that prompts 10 broadsheet newspaper pieces on Videogames: Not Just For Kids Anymore (and sub in comics/superheroes/etc for games there) that makes everyone who knows that roll their eyes. Games and comics and superheroes are big, legitimised industries now that turnover hundreds of billions of dollars.
Fanfiction is an outlier, as the purest form of play in a lot of senses. Unfettered, it’s the democratic media platform; there’s no minimum standard for publishing, there’s no real limits beyond your own ethics on what you can publish. it doesn’t turn a profit, by its very definition and it allows lots of games and versions of itself within that.
For something with a ludicrously broad definition that encapsulates hugely different types of works, it has defined forms; from drabbles to wingfic, as structural formats, we also recognise fluff or hurt/comfort as genre. Fanfiction isn’t really the thing itself, it’s the bookshop and what you find in it will vary on where you look and often, the advice of the bookseller or friends you speak to.
If you’ve enjoyed wandering that bookstore and adding to its shelves as part of the way you engage with media and then you come to a sports fandom? Well, you’re gonna look for the fic. If you don’t see yourself in the sport, as a woman or a queer person then you can write yourself in. It’s sad that we sideline the fantasies where we exist - given they’re entirely normal to have - into places where we jealously guard them away from the reality we daren’t intrude on but that is how it is.
And fuck: if your whole reason for liking F1 is cus you wanna marry a driver and you’re writing those 15 minute fantasies about them like you’re 15 and they’re a poster then it’s not doing any harm - it’s a lot healthier than stalking them. You might even work out what you really want or more things about yourself, in the process.
(if it’s ‘to marry an F1 driver’ then I suggest you take some boring swimwear snaps somewhere that looks expensive, stick ‘em on Insta and wait for the DM slide)
One of the things I like best in fanfic is the possibility of a queer narrative without complications, of telling queer stories without having to justify them as Issues, of letting us see ourselves and our own awakenings because fuck, you know the big book shop (if such things still exist) has one shelf of expensive, niche published novels you find difficult to related to and three sex ed books.
F1 fanfic was one of the ways I wandered back to the F1 fandom and one of the reasons I work in the industry now. It was enough of an in to make me want to really think, to have that new crush energy of obsession and enjoyment, about motorsport in a way I’d drifted away from as I felt sidelined from the sport through my early-to-mid 20s. I found brocedes much more compelling, as an interpretation and a way of processing the intense rivalry between Lewis and Nico - even knowing it was fictional conjecture - than I did the equally fictional conjecture about their psychological states and potential weaknesses published in the sports papers.
So, yes, I have read some excellent Formula 1 RPF. I have written some frankly mediocre and in retrospect very poorly edited F1 RPF that I posted to Twitter in a drunken moment of excitement because I was happy I’d finished it and forgot, idk. I have a tricky relationship to being a Notable Person I guess, I hadn’t intended any harm and was mostly worried I’d get flack from the industry. Lol. Anyway, only saying it cus like; this isn’t just me talking about things theoretically.
There’s a lot of F1 RPF that is more insightful than a lot of columns about ‘inside the drivers’ minds’ working off very little more than the RPF is.
Some of it, I won’t lie, I find really fucking weird but I guess like, that ain’t for me. There are a lot of problems with RPF - it’s too male, too frequently misogynist, too keen to reinforce homophobic ideas, too often white and blonde, not radical enough but those issues are for the advanced class rather than the 101 overview I was aiming for here and go well beyond F1 or RPF.
Shit I should be writing the weather report. Fuck. I’m the worst. Err, there you go, that’s a whole thing.
(I don’t read very much - I am busy af - but occasionally and especially on long haul flights when the idea of anything other than soothing is impossible)
*Actually tbh Thucydides couldn’t write for fuck but it was early and you know how when a tag’s young you’ll read a lot of mediocre stuff?

1. A lot of times on lgbtq media, I’ll see things that include all wlw but will be labeled as for lesbians. Like “lesbian term”, “this song for lesbians”, or they’ll be posts or media talking about “lesbian only” experiences that could apply to all wlw. What bugs me is that bc lesbian has a very strict definition, I really don’t feel included in these. Whereas “gay” is an umbrella term and I often feel like I wouldn’t have these problems as a bi man cause I feel like gay covers me.
2. Lesbians of course have their own things, but I’m only talking about stuff that def includes all wlw but is called “lesbian”. Like “lesbian” couples that may have a bi women in them. I feel like there’s this split between communities bc any time I see a bi girl use the term lesbian(not as a label; for anything else) there gets so much crap thrown. While I know bi men prob feel that same sometimes, gay is such a universal term that I don’t see it as much. Idk if that’s invasive of me to feel
disclaimer: I was typing and typing and.... this kinds turned into a rant so. Take it or leave it, I don’t know how much sense I’m making. You know, up until ~50-60 years ago the word “lesbian” just meant every woman who had sex with women. That 100% included women who also had sex with men. (Note that at the time those labels were about sex acts and not about an identity based on attraction.) So many lesbians back then were what we would now call bisexual or pansexual.
However, lesbian separatists and “political lesbians” (basically the OG radfems) decided that a true lesbian should not have anything to do with men. And thus they started to exclude bisexuals from lesbian spaces and terminology and we were forced to make our own community. Which we did.
Now in the last couple years, especially on tumblr, there’s been this attempt to “reunite” lesbians and bisexual women into a shared community called “wlw” or “sapphic”. Unfortunately there’s still lesbian separatists. And that’s how you get entire campaigns on tungle dot hell where people recycle radfem rhetoric to tell bi women we aren’t “allowed to use butch/femme because those are just for lesbians” and other historic revisionism like that.
Most of the time I see people use “wlw” or “sapphic” it's bi/pan women who make that effort. And I notice a development in which the same thing happens to wlw/sapphic as it did to “lesbian” back in ye olden days: bisexuals are being told to keep their mouths shut about their male partners because “this is wlw safe space and this shouldn’t be about Straight Things” and as a result many think that “sapphic” is just a synonym for “lesbian”.
And note that this is all something that happens in relatively niche online communities like tumblr. When we’re looking at mainstream media then it’s a whole other piece of cake because mainstream media, especially when created by and for cisgender heterosexuals, just doesn’t fucking care about these distinctions. Sometimes it’s “just” ignorance and not even malicous - they just really don’t know the difference. Sometimes (often times!) it’s textbook bisexual erasure.
Personally, I totally get how you feel. I don’t feel connected to the “lesbian community” at all. I have a couple of lesbian friends but I don’t engage in any lesbian community events (even though Berlin has plenty to offer). I don’t feel like I have anything to add there and frankly, I don’t feel like I can openly talk about the fact I am bisexual and dating a man.
Even terms like “wlw” and “sapphic” - even though I do use and appreciate the sentiment behind them - don’t really give me a sense of community or belonging. Maybe that’s also a generational thing. I also don’t feel like I have one type of attraction that’s sapphic and then another type of attraction that’s [insert adjective] for men (and another again for enbys?) - all of my attractions are bisexual so I don’t feel comfortable describing my attraction to women as “sapphic” bc it implies that it’s something different than my attraction to other genders. But again, that’s just my personal feelings. I don’t mind those terms and I don’t mind if someone would use those as umbrella terms for me or as identity labels for themselves - go for it. I just don’t feel any significant connection to them personally.
I’m also a petty asshole though so if some event or media or whatever is advertised as “lesbian* .... party / movie night / pride / book club” then I’m just like, well, I’m not a lesbian so that’s not for me, guess they’ll be missing out on getting to know me. And I get even more pissy when they add in small print “*also welcome to bisexuals” because if you wanna make an event for lesbians and bi women then why not advertise it as that? Putting us in parantheses or small-print is at best tone-deaf and at worst an expression of how little they value us.
Many lesbians aren’t actively biphobic and would never want to exclude us and would actually genuinely welcome us. So, don’t take this as me slagging off all lesbians. However... many, especially the younger ones, are still incredibly oblivious to the history of their own label (because radfems work very hard at erasung that history so it doesn’t include bi and trans women) as well as ignorant about the struggles that bisexual women have to face in particular both in mainstream society as well as within the LGBTQIA+ community. They often don’t realise how alienating it is for us to always only being an after-thought at best. Which is kinda hilarious given that they often (rightfully!) voice the same criticism when everything is made about cis gay men and lesbians are just the after-thought.
So long story short: I get it. It sucks. That being said, bisexual men also face a lot of issues and biphobia affects them in some specific gendered ways that are also pretty shitty. They really don’t have it better or easier then other bisexuals when it comes down to biphobia.
Now, you can either say “fuck it, lesbian stuff is for me, too” and ignore all the separatism and basically reclaim your rightful place in this community. Or you can stick to the bi community and seek out media/events that are explicitly for all the queers.
Maddie
#I may have said this before but I'll put it here again:#I feel a stronger connection and can relate better to gay men than to lesbians#*shrug emoji*#Anonymous

Wait aren’t sapphics inherently queer because queer means all lgbt people? I’m confused
Oh, anon, I wish I were you. I wish I was blissfully unaware of queer discourse. Okay, so yeah, I grew up thinking queer was an umbrella term for all LGBTQ+ people. I knew about some history around the word, and I grew up hearing terms like “queer studies” and “queer theory” and “queer community.” So, in general society, yeah, queer is usually used to mean all LGBTQ+ people, and, yes, sapphics would be inherently queer. However, here on Tumblr dot hell, there’s a whole discourse about the term. About how people “shouldn’t use it because it’s a slur” and how you’re not allowed to call it “the queer community” but you’re supposed to deal with it being called “the gay community.”
I, personally, find it... pretty irritating. Like, I understand having issues with the word on an individual basis, but it’s just.. it’s just so confusing to anyone who isn’t on this website and is so hard to explain without sounding absolutely ridiculous. I’ve explained this to other queer people IRL, and they do not understand why there’s discourse about this because it just defies the decades of our history spent reclaiming the word. So there’s that.. But also, queer is a really useful umbrella that encompasses all non-cishet identities and is a good term to describe your identity if you don’t want to disclose your exact orientation or if you don’t have a specific label for it. But yeah, since some people have issues with the word, they say not to use it to mean all LGBTQ+ people.

God you really can tell when people haven't experienced any kind of queer community outside of the internet. Please go talk to a queer person over 60, hell I'd take over 30 at this point. If you think you're an activist in some way because you make exclusionist and phobic posts on the tumblr dot com I am begging you to consider what you're actually contributing, and what voices you're stealing and talking over when you talk about the history of the community while never making an effort to talk to the people who were fucking there.
#I was talking to a friend before about it#He's 72 and very gay#And I was doing my best to explain what the online community is like#And he said it was shameful#And you know what he's right

(1) Can I just say I hate all this Freddie Mercury biopic wank with a passion? Like, this hellsite went from "Queen is one of those boring 'classic' bands all whites are obsessed with bc they won't even consider new music by diverse artists u.u" to "WWRY is clearly a song about rebellious queer youth, cishets don't touch Queen u.u" after someone pointed out Freddie's ethnicity and sexuality, to "why aren't they making Freddie gay in the biopic!!!11" and... whatever they're whining about now.
(2) And I HATE looking at all this bs and thinking "fake fans", bc I'm pretty damn sure that by most standards, *I* count as a "fake fan", too. I mean, most stuff I know about the band's history is actually stuff about Freddie, thanks to a few documentaries centered around him and my mom, the long-time fan with a big crush on Freddie who introduced me to Queen when I was a kid. Hell, I couldn't even name all their albums or anything needed to be considered a "true fan". But ppl on here... ugh. (3) It's like they're really embarrassed bc they were called out on mistaking "woke" stuff for "unwoke" stuff, and now they have this desperate need to prove their ability to discern wokeness by getting offended about something they don't even care all that much about, as loudly and dramatically as they can.
HAHAHAHAHA.
okay so, tldr: I hate this discourse and I honestly hope that it dies within two weeks out of the biopic for a whole lot of reasons amongst which the ones you said, but like, this discourse actually highlights a shitload of issues with the usual tumblr discourse which I will gladly go into now because I’m fucking tired and this movie isn’t out yet.
now, premise: while I don’t think that true fans are a thing - at most there’s casual fans or in-depth fans but I mean, a fan is a fan so I don’t believe in the *fake* fans thing..... the problem here isn’t that they’re fakes. it’s that they aren’t fans. period.
other premise: from what you’ve said you’re a casual fan which is normal and you DON’T count as fake I mean if you like them and listen to them and know something it’s basically being a casual fan same as I am with idk the rolling stones, I like the famous stuff, I have the fundamental records and I like them when they’re on but that’s it.
but, yours truly is a Not Casual Queen Fan in the sense that a) I got into them when I was seventeen and I’m thirty now so thanks it’s been a while, b) I own all the records, c) I own a decent portion of roger taylor’s/brian may’s solo records (and I have listened to all of them that I couldn’t buy), d) I went to see them live once (k it was with paul rodgers but nvm guys not my fault if I wasn’t born in time for freddie) and I love queen’s music and I’m also fucking cishet and you know what? these people Are Not Fans and they should stop pretending they are and just stop making themselves look like assholes.
SPECIFICALLY:
the movie’s not out yet and I’ve had to see FIFTEEN ‘FRIENDLY REMINDER TO ALL CISHETS THAT FREDDIE MERCURY WAS GAY (at least a couple said he was bi and they were less asshole-ish) AND POC AND IF YOU DON’T KNOW YOU’D BETTER LEARN NOW HAHAHAHA YOU THOUGHT HE WASN’T. spoilers: every fucking casual queen fan who has bothered to buy three records knows that. yes, also the cishets. like, as someone who went from VERY CASUAL (ie: I know three songs) to NOT CASUAL in the span of two months I can 100% assure you that before getting into queen the usual preconceptions are that freddie was gay and that queen = freddie + three other people. the first three things you learn when getting into queen are (more or less in order but it can change) that a) the band was actually brian may + roger taylor first, b) that roger brought freddie in because they knew each other already, c) that mary austin was a fundamental person in freddie’s life and that she was also brian may’s ex and knew him first before they got together, d) the members’s backstories including where freddie was born, so like...... this idea that CASUAL CISHET FANS wouldn’t know that freddie was a) not heterosexual, b) poc is just something a NON-FAN would say because guess what, most queen fans even at a casual level are 100% aware that freddie was a) not heterosexual, b) not ethnical british. and saying that OMG CISHETS DON’T KNOW it’s ridiculous because guess what, everyone knows and if they have no idea they do, though luck, we did;
(spoilers: I also am 99% sure that those ppl have no idea that roger and brian actually sing on the records and composed a shitload of the music and queen =/= ONLY FREDDIE but okay)
they have no idea that rock music in the 70s/80s was not so heteronormative and was not the cishetmalething they think it is. like, please look at led zeppelin (ie THE PEOPLE WITHOUT WHOM YOU WOULDN’T HAVE HEAVY METAL) and tell me they were heteronormative. like, you saw robert plant? yeah, me too. and the thing was that queen were revolutionary in the sense that they brought an operatic/theatrical approach to the music that no one tried before but guess what, the point is that they made it sell. the thing that I would like tumblr Woke People to grasp is that what made queen groundbreaking as far as Wokeness goes is that they managed to sell and become the monster-moneymaking group they were (while keeping things quality) with a frontman who was Not Heterosexual, Did Not Try To Pass For Heterosexual One Day In His Life and Never Shied Away From It. like, idk if people are aware that while the scene was way less heteronormative than they think it still wasn’t the most openly talked about topic around (I mean guys elton john did marry a woman at some point X°DDD), but going around in the seventies flaunting your non-heterosexualness around and selling millions of copies making your stage persona a selling point of your music wasn’t exactly common. like ffs one of the most famous queen songs has a video where for 3/4 of the time they’re in drag and the other part has freddie performing with the royal ballet (and guess what the song was actually written by john deacon and the idea of doing the video in drag was roger taylor’s and none of them as far as we know is Not Heterosexual, but never mind giving the rest of the band some credit when it came to Not Caring About Heteronormativity) and fine, that video was banned/controversial, but it still was a huge british hit and it’s in the top five queen songs Everyone Knows. and tbh I’m terrified of that video being shown in the biopic (which it should since the works was from ‘84 and they stop at ‘85) because I’m 100% sure that those people have no idea it exists and when they find out how long is it gonna take them to decide that IT’S PROBLEMATIC? I mean, Woke Kids on here think the rhps is problematic, I’m shuddering at the thought of what they’d think of the i want to break free video;
actually a lot of us cishet queen fans might have had a wake up call including, er, finding out certain preferences, thanks to either their music or their shows or their videos (*cough* I 100% assure you that watching roger taylor in drag was what made me realize crossdressing was my thing for good like I knew before but I didn’t actually put two and two together until I saw that video and went like ‘............. AH WELL SHIT THEN THAT’S IT FAIR ENOUGH’), and a lot of us cishet queen fans who weren’t, like, strictly playing to heteronormative rules back in the day found a lot to relate to in their music even without being queer ourselves and guess what I’ve never met a single queen *fan* who could give less of a damn about freddie’s ethnicity or orientation (as in: everyone was a-okay with it) regardless of their background. that was what made them groundbreaking and extremely important as well, because they managed to be that kind of record-selling records-breaking band while not shying away from having a Not Heterosexual frontman AND Not Heteronormative Heterosexual Band Members Who Also Didn’t Give Two Fucks About Their Lead Singer’s Sexuality so going like OMG NOW WE’RE GONNA TEACH YOU THAT FREDDIE WASN’T HETEROSEXUAL BECAUSE WE’RE WOKE is ridiculous because dearest susan, we already knew and we already were woke about that and to us he was the frontman of a band we liked for a bunch of reasons;
also I don’t think people realize that freddie was a role model/example for the entire next generation of rock bands frontmen even in genres that had zilch to do with him - I mean guys AXL ROSE had a hero-worship for freddie and sang bohemian rhapsody at the freddie memorial concert WITH ELTON JOHN and grn really aren’t the same exact sphere as queen jsyk, but if you look at axl on stage esp. when he was younger? guys. it’s obvious. like you can see the influence. but lmao, now ALL the very cishet(-ish) singers who OPENLY SAID FREDDIE INFLUENCED THEM DIDN’T KNOW ACCORDING TO TUMBLR DOT COM?
LIKE, fuck’s sake, one of freddie’s major accomplishments in that sense was to ending up being a role model for younger singers in a genre where heteronormativity is way less common than everyone thinks BUT where not many people esp. back in the day would be open about their sexuality because it still was a taboo-ish thing -- like, gender roles were a lot more blurred but you wouldn’t hear many of those people admitting openly they were bi or gay or Not Heterosexual and the entirety of the rock scene especially mainstream but also not was entirely fucking aware of it, do these people think THE FANS wouldn’t?
also, we will rock you was WRITTEN BY BRIAN MAY AND IT WAS ABOUT A FUCKING ENCORE WHERE THE FANS SURPRISED THEM AT ONE SHOW IN LIKE MID-SEVENTIES which already shows that They Know Nothing because if they think freddie wrote all the queen songs then it’s already obvious they have no fucking clue about how queen worked as a band because all the members contributed something (guys john deacon wrote at least two of their major hits, roger taylor sang on all the records along with brian may and if you hear the back harmonies on ‘39 he goes way higher than freddie and a part in seaside rendezvous has both him and freddie mimicking other instruments with their voice and you wouldn’t know if no one told you first, brian may wrote a SHITLOAD of music for queen and it was an all-four effort, not just freddie + three other generic british dudes for fuck’s sake) so like, anyone saying that is already giving ample proof that they have no idea;
now of course you can interpret it as whatever the hell you want, but assuming that all of queen’s music that might relate to queer issues was written by freddie ABOUT QUEER ISSUES (this when freddie’s main topic of interest was... not really discussing his sexuality especially in the seventies like again, I want to break free is one of the queen to-go songs everyone brings up when it comes to that topic and IT WAS WRITTEN BY SOMEONE ELSE and the video concept was THANKS TO SOMEONE ELSE) just shows that a) you don’t know shit about the band’s history, b) you’re not a fan because you didn’t even bother to look it up on wiki, c) you’re trying to look woke at all costs;
they have NO FUCKING CLUE that most people in the 70s/80s/90s in the business were NOT politically correct according to their standards LIKE LITERALLY NO ONE WAS;
goes unsaid they probably haven’t listened to one full queen album from beginning to end not even the greatest hits.
tldr: I hate that they don’t seem to realize that things existed before 2005 and that music in the 70s/80s COULD and WAS diverse and *woke* already before they were even born, I hate that they decided that ALL CISHETS DIDN’T KNOW when thank you I think even my damned parents know and they don’t listen to rock music, I hate that they decided that queen APPARENTLY DIDN’T HAVE A FANBASE BEFORE THEM (lol) or that that fanbase didn’t understand them (triple-lol), I hate that they’re reducing freddie to his sexuality when he didn’t want that in the first place, I hate that they’re falling into THE MAIN MISCONCEPTION AROUND ABOUT THIS BAND as in THAT IT WAS FREDDIE + THREE OTHER PEOPLE and not an all-around group effort of people who were friends and deeply loved/respected each other and put the same share of work into it, I hate that they moment they see the movie and are introduced to the actual music/the actual story they’ll MOST LIKELY find problematic things to wank about because like hell they wouldn’t and I hate that they’re basically pretending to give a fuck about a band that I love and have loved dearly in a very non-casual way when they actually fucking don’t.
fucking hell please never let anyone make a biopic about either springsteen or led zeppelin or other people I actually like because this is bad enough, I don’t even want to think of what tumblr ppl would say if they knew anything about any rock artist of medium-large fame back in the day. peace.

Heya! Just wondering if u knew which slipknot songs are Abt trauma? I wanna add em to my playlist. Have a nice day!
i don’t think corey rly talks abt his lyrical content too much so i don’t know how many songs he’s #confirmed are about trauma. but y’know i have my ptsd bangers playlist that does have a shitload of slipknot on it.
https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/ptsd-jamz/pl.u-r2yB1aBuGozVP
if u don’t have apple music u can’t listen directly here but u can see what i have in it. like obvs most of these songs aren’t exactly written abt trauma lmao but they give me the trauma feelings.
ETA: also tbh this might be too spicy a take for tumblr dot hell and their ice cold takes on trauma (especially csa) but every song by slipknot is about trauma because they are all written by a person with a history of trauma. like how every song written by a queer person is a queer song. that shit is an intrinsic part of you.

First let’s talk about YOUR tags- “#and you tagged it as q-slur #as a cherry on top of the shit cake #get out of here with that trash” Yes I did tag this post with “q slur”. I guess you’re not familiar with the tagging system here on tumblr dot com, so allow me to explain. Since I made a post in response to debate on and discussion of the slur “queer” and its history, I tagged it as such so that people who don’t wish to see this topic can blacklist it, people who want to engage in such a discussion can find it, and so that anyone looking through my blog for specific topics can easily find posts about them.
Speaking of debate and discussion, I’m loving all of y’all in the notes who seem to have forgotten that this post is a response to a discourse post which asked the question “Who gets to use queer?” This is not my idea of an edgy hot take, it’s literally a response to a post made in the ace discourse tag. That is in no way a “hateful gotcha”.
And I’m gonna say the same thing I told another commenter who wanted to know why the AIDS crisis matters in relation to this word: When discussing the reclamation of a slur, you can’t separate the word from it’s history and the cultural and social implications of it. It will always be tied to Queer Nation and the AIDS crisis, as it should be. Would it have been acceptable for cis hetero people to call themselves queer then? I think no. Why is/isn’t it now? It’s a perfectly valid question to ask. I find it a hell of a lot more offensive to pretend like the word “queer” and attempts to reclaim it exist in a vacuum, removed from historical and cultural context.
And I’m well aware that ace people have been around forever, but “we’ve always been here, we’ve always been queer” NO, you literally haven’t been. Cis aces who don’t experience sga have absolutely not always been here and always been queer. They were not part of the fight to reclaim it, they were not part of the groups historically associated with it, and they are not members of the groups who’ve been targeted and hurt by it.
I want you to ask yourself honestly how you think Queer Nation would have reacted to some cis heteroromantic aces calling themselves queer in the middle of the aids crisis. Because I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that would’ve been pretty fucking offensive. And why weren’t any cishet aces calling themselves queer back then? 🤔 (This was a response to a specific post but I’d like to pose the question to all of you)
