“A Truth Universally Acknowledge”: The Seventh (and Second-to-Last) Set of Teasers
Thrilling news everyone! This morning, within the last hour, the campaign for A Truth Universally Acknowledged: Queer Fanworks Inspired by Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice” crossed our base funding goal!! This is wonderful news, and guarantees that Duck Prints Press will be able to publish this awesome collection of artwork and stories, and be able to make the related merchandise too. We’ve got fund goals to get our backers more stuff (at no additional cost) and to give our contributors raises, so now – we’ve hit the minimum, and the sky’s the limit!
Thank you to everyone who has helped spread the word about this project. We couldn’t have done it without you.
There are only three days left before the campaign ends, and only a few teasers at well! Today, we’ve got three artists and two authors for you!
Art Teaser: radicalhoodie
radicalhoodie is the artist behind our lovely campaign bookmark!
radicalhoodie of course also contributed to the anthology.
Title: untitled
Story Teaser: Dei Walker
Title: Orbital Conjunction
Excerpt:
Mary Bennet’s stomach swooped, heart racing, pulse rushing in her ears. She’d never felt this way before—and if she were lucky, she never would again. Her fingers clutched at the armrest of the copilot’s chair as centripetal force shoved her into the gel-filled seat while the tiny ship pivoted then shot off in another direction. At least she assumed it was changing trajectory; the sight out the viewport before her was an oppressive matte black dotted with white, every angle looking the same. It made the terrestrial animal in the back of her mind scream for the safety of ground and walls and all that was good and right in the universe.
In the pilot’s chair, Anne de Bourgh’s laugh of sheer delight filled the small ship

Title: Gazebo in the Rain

Title: The Triad Plot
Excerpt:
Caroline turned and met Lizzy’s eye over her book. “I think to be really accomplished, a woman must study music, dancing, drawing, and all the modern languages.”
“Is that all?” Lizzy’s words made Caroline’s lips widen in a smile that showed her eyeteeth. Heat crawled up Lizzy’s neck; she could not tell if anger or attraction caused the sensation. How vexing that attraction was still a possibility, despite how Caroline had treated her.
“I find,” Mr. Bingley broke in, as if to dispel the tension, “that Miss Bennet’s care for her sister makes her quite accomplished.”
Vindication drew a smile on Lizzy’s lips and she gave Mr. Bingley a grateful nod. “Thank you. I also find care and compassion to be among a woman’s most valuable qualities.” Her gaze made Caroline scoff and look away. Curiously, Lizzy caught a hint of a smile on Mr. Darcy’s lips. “Have you any comment on the matter, Mr. Darcy?”
His eyes held hers for a moment before they flicked to Mr. Bingley’s. “Just that I find women more surprising than any other creature.”

"A Truth Universally Acknowledged": Our Fifth Teaser Post
The crowdfunding campaign for A Truth Universally Acknowledged: Queer Fanworks Inspired by Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice is about two/thirds done, and we’re more than halfway through our teaser posts! The campaign ends December 5th, and our special Flash Backer Level (with a massive discount on all our anthologies, old and new!) ends December 2nd. We’re so close to our base funding goal – almost 90%! – so if you’ve been thinking about taking a peek, there’s no time like the present. Maybe you’ll be the backer who pushes us into officially funded!
Two of our authors, Téa Belog and nottesilhouette, opted to do related stories – not in the same settings or about the same characters, but about similar themes. In the final book, we gave the creators the option to write a paragraph or two about the inspiration behind their pieces, and Téa and nottesilhouette talk a lot in theirs about how their pieces are in dialogue with each other. As such, we’ve of course included both their teasers in the same day’s post!

Title: unwound thread and wilted roses
Excerpt:
It wasn’t something she ever expected, not before Bingley and his party went to stay at Netherfield. Despite all the barely disguised offers, batted eyelashes, and pointed looks, Georgiana never expected her brother would actually fall in love.
William never cared for courtship or marriage; he never had any inclination toward romance. His friends, while few and far between, were loyal and platonic and nothing more. In Georgiana’s eyes, he was never looking for romance in the same way others were. And maybe most importantly of all, he never seemed unfulfilled or restless in the way that some people did when they were searching for love. Or even just marriage. Despite the grand fortune bestowed upon him, William never mentioned looking for a wife.
And that… that had been a relief.

Title: tell that to my tell-tale heart
Excerpt:
“So proline has restricted phi and psi angles given its 5-ring structure—you can see how it’s an outlier on the Ramachandran plot here.” Mary points to a tight ring, curled up on itself, tiny compared to the way the other amino acids sprawl out and take up space across the plane of the graph. “And that restricts its ability to bond with other amino acids.”
Immediately, Lydia blinks back tears.
She feels ridiculous, sobbing over protein folding patterns, but god, proline’s just like her for real. Bent all wrong, all sharp corners and stolen valence electrons. The way proline twists up into itself, the only amino acid to bond the protein backbone twice—it’s like it’s holding its own damn hand, no space for anybody else.

Title: We Can All Begin Freely
Excerpt:
“Come,” she says, “let’s dance.”
“I cannot dance,” Charlotte says. “I’ve been crying.”
“Perhaps that is the best time for it,” Caroline says, and her tone has its usual velvet sarcasm, but her expression is the most earnest Charlotte has ever seen it.
“I do not know if I can,” Charlotte admits.
Caroline says nothing, only begins the dance with a smile. Charlotte cannot help but follow, though she tries to move stiffly, tries to maintain propriety; she tries to show that she knows how odd and uncomfortable she must look, so she cannot be caught off-guard and vulnerable by a joke at her expense from Caroline. But her body has cried away its stiffness and its shame for tonight. Her body moves softly, easily. Her body asks for more.

“A Truth Universally Acknowledged”: Four, Four Teaser Posts!
A Truth Universally Acknowledged: Queer Fanworks Inspired by Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice” is 80% funded! With 8 days to go! We’re really on a roll, and we’d love to keep that going to reach our goal early and maybe get to a stretch goal or two. Stretch goals are great for us, because they primarily are designed to enable us to raise the pay of our contributors!
In case you were wondering, there’ll be five more of these teaser posts after this one – so we’re almost halfway through the teasers. A lot of contributors means a lot of posts!
Story Teaser: Mikki Madison
Title: The Magnificent Mr. Markham
Excerpt:
“Why, Mr. Markham! How lovely to see you here!”
Mary swallowed a screech and spun to face her accuser. Georgiana lounged in the plush chair by the window in a most unladylike manner, her legs kicked over one of the arms while she leaned against the other.
“What are you doing in my room?” Mary demanded.
“You didn’t want to talk at the party, so I thought I would wait until we were somewhere you might be more amenable.” Georgiana gestured to the room. “Somewhere we won’t be overheard, for example.”
Art Teaser: Zel Howland
Zel is the creator of the spectacular art for the enormous folding fan we’re offering as a bonus! Here’s a bigger version so you can see some of the amazing details:
Zel has also contributed two pieces to the book! We’re only doing one teaser for artists who contributed multiple artworks, so you’ll have to wait to get a glimpse of the other.

Title: To Her the Pride
Excerpt:
“You could be so pretty!” Annabell offered during one of their small-group tea party practices. “I can bring my hair straightener tomorrow.”
“You’re not touching my hair,” Mia responded, pushing her untouched teacup away.
“Be polite,” Paige warned past her discomfort, glancing toward the prowling Mrs. Morrow.
“Why?” Mia demanded in return, turning those sharp eyes on her. “I asked Mrs. Morrow what it was for the other day, and you know what she said? ‘To make things simpler for people.’ So I said: ‘For who? It’s not simpler for me. Why should I make things harder for myself so other people can take it easy?’ and she didn’t have an answer for that. She just made me go to the reflection corner.”
“…did you reflect on it?” Paige asked, so mortified that she was in danger of getting sandwich crumbs on her dress from how her hand was shaking, but she was fascinated in equal measure.
“Yeah,” Mia allowed with a shrug. “I decided I was right.”
Paige had gone home that day with a spot on her lap from the cucumber slice that had dropped from her sandwich.

Title: A Handsome Face

Title: A Constant, Fearful Longing
Excerpt:
“You’re not afraid of anything, are you?” Georgiana asked with a cautious smile.
“Oh, I’m afraid of all sorts of things,” Lizzy said. Everything inside her churned restlessly. “But I’m not afraid of you.” She looked up at the stars and picked out the shapes that Georgiana had pointed out to her, and then the ones they had made up together in summers past.
She feared finding Pemberley deserted, of losing the truest friend she had ever been lucky enough to find. She had never felt so strongly with Charlotte, or even Jane. No other person had provoked in her such a constant, fearful longing.
A claustrophobic grief gripped her suddenly, that losing Georgiana was inevitable—if not to a riot of terrified townspeople, or to her imminent departure, then merely to the steady march of time.
“Whatever would I do without you?” she asked quietly.
You’ve reached the end of the post! Now check out the campaign to learn about all our contributors and offerings!
