The Role of Queens in the Ghouls of the Clans series

Queens are given deep respect in the Ghouls of the Clans series.  They are the ones that teach kits Clan life and culture.  Their sharp eyes ensure that their charges do not leave the camp.  They give newborns their first food, and defend the weakest of the Clan from intruders.  Warriors are warned to never mess with one.

It is from the queens that kits learn the basic parts of the warrior code.  They gently remind their children that they must wait for apprenticeship.  They will scold kits when they wander too far or play too hard with their littermates.  They share stories of their Clan’s heroes whenever it’s time to sleep.  Becoming a queen is very taxing.  The worst could happen should a mother cat rest her eyes for a moment.

Feline pregnancies last for around two moons.  Warriors will not move to the nursery until the last half-moon or so unless they have medical concerns.  Many warriors scorn the idea of loafing around when they can still physically perform their duties.  The Clan experiences less strain this way, so it does not lose a provider unnecessarily.    

Medicine cats watch the queens like hawks.  They note if any mothers are experiencing issues like poor milk production, extreme fatigue, postpartum depression, or heavy stress.  Borage is brought to the queens regularly to boost their milk.  Other queens take over if a mother needs rest.  Stressed or depressed queens are brought out into the camp so they can socialize with Clanmates.  A particularly stressed queen may even be allowed on patrols to clear her head so long as the medicine cat feels it will not harm her.

Lake Clanborn queens and those from the Tribe of Rushing Water do not act aggressively towards most toms while in the nursery.  Living in close-knit groups for generations has bred the aggression towards toms and the male instinct to kill kits out.  

Loner and rogue females may still feel nervous around toms, however.  If a former loner moves into a Clan nursery and is known to have this issue, a ban is placed on most toms in the nursery area to minimize her stress.  The only exceptions are the leader, the medicine cat, fathers of any kits, tom-kits, and apprentices.  Likewise, former loner toms with instinctual urges to kill kits are warned away from the nursery area.

StreamClan and GorgeClan are particularly strict about keeping toms away from their respective nurseries.  Both of these Clans ban she-cats from fighting in normal circumstances thanks to a curse laid long ago by the Void, StreamClan and GorgeClan’s equivalent of the Dark Forest.  The fighting ban has made their queens’ protective instincts with their kits worse.  Toms nosing around young kits can provoke a StreamClan or GorgeClan queen into attacking.  Any tom visitors of the two Clans are warned to avoid their ���birthing dens’, where the youngest kits and pregnant mothers are housed.  A tom that irritates or provokes the queens will be severely punished.

Some lake Clan queens do not take the losses of their warrior duties very well.  They pace around the nursery trying to burn their excess energy.  Some of these she-cats will pick up warrior duties again as soon as their kits are weaned.  Others find they like caring for kits more than anything, and will stay on as permanent queens after their kits have grown.  Queens attempt to starve off boredom by inventing new games, telling stories and jokes, and mingling with other Clan members.  

Queens are one of the few ranks with name suffixes associated with the role; -flower, -blossom, -petal, and -poppy.  Apprentices are not allowed kits until they have earned their names.  Young cats that want to hone parenting skills will assist with kit care under the queens’ guidance.  Tasks include playing with the kits, scolding the kits when they behave inappropriately, comforting scared kits, cleaning the nursery, teaching kits about basic concepts, cleaning dirty kits, and settling the kits down for naps.  The queens will let the leader know if a young cat has earned a parenting suffix.

The queens take notice of warriors that wish to mentor their respective kits.  If they approve of the warrior, they will talk to the leader to arrange the mentor-apprentice pair.  The leader makes the final call.  Queens speak with the leader and elders to determine the best mentors.

Queens perhaps have one of the most exhausting jobs.  But, they reap their rewards when their kits become healthy well-mannered apprentices.  Their Clans deeply respect the work they do.  Clan traditions and culture are passed down by the queens.  If they were not present, the Clans’ history would collapse in dust.  No warriors would exist without them.

I was awarded Miss Congeniality which took me by complete surprise. 🤗 And aside from this royal weekend, as I walked into my dorm, preparing to face the reality of this upcoming week, I saw another sash.
