My Favorite Skate Video Parts

There are so many great video parts that have been created throughout the years. It's amazing to witness skateboarding's progression and how insane things are getting these days. I would like to share my favorite video parts that have stuck with me since I first started skateboarding in 2001.

Frankie Hill - Propaganda (1990)

It wasn't until after college that I started digging into skateboarding's roots. Powell Peralta, H-Street and Santa Cruz Skateboards were putting out some quality skate videos during the late-80s/early-90s. Tommy Guerrero's "Future Primitive S.F." part influenced many upcoming street skaters. Competitive skate park scenes began to fizzle out and the streets started to take over. Pioneers began to mark legendary territory for the rest of us scope out and enjoy. Although his skating career was short-lived (due to a knee injury), Frankie Hill earned his spot as a legendary skater. His style was noticeably "hesh.” Fast skating, sloppy landings, caveman boardslides, hucked ollies, speed checks.... The standout reason why I chose this part was because of the epic mute/japan grab, down the dirt mountain gap. The shot of the run up, the hang time (the dude's floating!) and the stokage whistle at the end makes this my favorite sequence in a skate video.

Mark Gonzales - Video Days (1991)

Who doesn't love The Gonz? Video Days is one of the greatest skate videos of all time. This is where skating on film really started to see a shift. Spike Jonze and the Blind team began to use line-filming to their advantage. Gonz's video part shows how longer clips can reveal more style and creative flow. It is a joy to watch Mark gracefully carve and manual down the street, with Coltrane's "Traneing In" playing. His indy grab down Wallenburg was the first recorded trick at that spot, alongside the boardslide down the Santa Monica double kink. The super stylish frontside boardslide in the parking garage is really cool to see. Mark's skating and personality always reminds me to skate for fun and leave some room for creative flow while skating at a skatepark or anywhere else.

Guy Mariano - Mouse (1996)

Guy Mariano had the sickest style in the mid-late 90s. There is something really special about this part. Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man", the switch big flip, the pushes toward the front tail on the fence, the endlessly re-playable switch mid-line turnaround, the switch pop shove-it crooked grind, the small wheels and baggy clothes...it's the coolest part ever. His skateboard repertoire is stacked at such a high level here; it's no wonder why this video part is considered one of the greatest ever made. Guy has an incredible amount of skill and style riding switch. Every time I watch his part, I have a tough time deciphering if he is goofy or regular footed. The filming is fantastic and I believe it captures the west coast style in a definitive way. The clips that are collected here are all gold and the song is just.. tasty. I love this part and I have some memories of me skating through South Bay area schools with this song running through my head. This is the video that will always get me hyped and ready to go out and skate.

Jason Dill - Mosaic (2003)

I love Dill, man. The early-mid 00's is where I really started to pay attention to skateboarding. As a kid, Kerry Getz was my favorite skater, mostly because my friends and I got to meet him and skate the AWS/Habitat training facility for a day. I still enjoy Kerry's part in Mosaic, but Jason Dill's part always stands out in my mind. The "Whose Line is it Anyway?" voice-dubbing improv in the beginning is hilarious! A good song was chosen for the part (Spoon's "The Way We Get By"). I particularly enjoy the fact that he's really only skating and filming at 2 spots (the DIY foundation plaza in Los Angeles and Paral-lel in Barcelona). It's a different pace when compared to other professional parts that have multiple clips from 10+ locations. It's really enjoyable just to watch him skate around and take his time between tricks. His fakie flip, fake front shuv and front crook line is really sick. His flick on the fakie flip looks really good on film and he had a front crook pinch before "the pinch" was a cool thing to do. Mosaic, Inhabitants and Mind Field were some of my favorite videos growing up. I love skateboarding and I hope that I will be able to get back on my board soon.

Scratch everything I said about driving here. Superpower rescinded. This city stresses me out. We’ve been out during the heart of rush-hour lately and it’s too much for me. I suspect this is because - now as a mother - I don’t want my kids orphaned simply because an impatient, beeping micro driver t-boned into me. My friend Ashley mentioned once that, prior to having kids, she lived life at about a 9/10 in terms of risk-taking; but post-children, she rated herself a 0/10. She admitted this wistfully or almost ashamed; but it’s a deep primitive instinct we’re talking about, not easily trifled with. I think the thrill is also gone for me. It’s been replaced by annoyance at the gridlock and anxiety that I won’t get back in time to nurse Lev. No wonder he’s so thirsty at night!, an irrational voice pipes up in my head, just loud enough to be heard above the din outside.

Or maybe I’m just overtired, so everything feels harder. Santa Cruz is a bustling metropolis, gritty, young, and ambitious. We live in a very small oasis of grass and fruit trees, surrounded by mariachi bands, marching bands, Carnaval loudspeakers, Pentecostal churches, fruit sellers, and traffic traffic traffic. The noise busts its way in. For the past two days, a neighbor’s car alarm has deafeningly gone off at 6 AM sharp, as if on a schedule. “Could you hit snooze, please?” I murmured to Matthew through my pillow. “Please?” 

The alarm detonates for about 20 minutes, during which time my sleepiness hightails it out of here, and doubts skulk in its place: are we parenting okay, are the kids getting enough quality time with us, should we include a coffee farm tour at the team retreat or a visit to the colonies, did I use the right Spanish in that meeting or inadvertently insult everyone, when is that visa application due again? I twist and turn, offering prayers up, kicking the sheets off, stuck in a loop; then eventually I’m up and groggily jotting notes on scratch paper. The alarm stops, finally, just as I’m headed to the shower. I decide to leave the lights off, and bathe in the humid, quiet, dark of our windowless bathroom. 

Cities. They’re stressful, man.

To be honest, it’s not enormously different from where we lived in Saint Paul. We endured plenty of ambient traffic noise there too, being within spitting distance of I-94, plus the usual scuttle and buzz of the inner city: people, sirens, bars, car alarms. I truly think car alarms should be made illegal. If we don’t burn this planet up first, I think in 300 years people will look back at the noise and light pollution of this current age and think: Neanderthals... sheesh.

People tend to use the word “compound” for where we live now and family members who’ve inadvertently done so can attest to how much I hate it. For one, I can’t think of a single positive connotation for the word. Two, if we live in a compound, then literally every single other Bolivian in Santa Cruz does as well. Even the most humble abode has some kind of fence with razor wire around it. We have a freshly painted white brick wall around our little oasis - and so do our neighbors to the left, right, across the street, and behind us. So it’s not exactly Guantanamo Bay, if you catch my drift.

But we’re an NGO, so of course, it feels a little different I guess. We use the word “campus”, but this is also confusing, mostly to other expats. “So there’s like a school there?”, they clarify, brows furrowed. Bolivians seem to have the least trouble with it. 

“What would you call - [circling my hands in wide, opposite rotations, palms down]... this?” I ask my coworkers in Spanish. “This whole... area.”

“Casa?”, they respond, both bewildered by the weird question and totally unconcerned.

Ah yes, casa. And that in fact, is the correct answer. Crazy, frantic Santa Cruz, me, superpower-less in the face of its dastardly traffic, the noise, the heat (oh lord, the heat), our little oasis, all of it - yes. Home.

Aftershock Festival is an event where simply parking and getting in can be an adventure in itself. It’s held at Discovery Park, along the confluence of the Sacramento and American rivers, between Natoma’s and downtown Sacramento. Besides the traditional methods for getting to a concert, you could also bike in using the bike trail and there’s free bike parking at the venue where your cycle will be kept safe. You could even park downtown and rent a scooter to ride over to the ADA entrance on the west end of the park. A shuttle service is also offered, to off-site parking.

Once inside, there are several vendors, food tents and beverages to choose from. Despite the fact that all the bathrooms are portable, they are well kept and set up with hand washing stations. There is plenty of space to sit in the shade of a tree and eat your food, or get close to your favorite band. With 3 stages, there is a band playing almost constantly and only occasionally will you find 2 bands playing at the same time.

This year’s lineup featured chart-topping artists like Tool, Korn, Stone Temple Pilots, Staind and Blink 182. Additionally included were the heavier sounds of Slipknot, Rob Zombie, Lamb of God & Gojira – Just to name a few. There were also top bands from around the world, like Bring Me the Horizon (UK), Babymetal (Japan) and The Hu (Mongolia).

There seemed to be an enjoyably overwhelming amount of musicians to see. The artist’s start & end times were coordinated perfectly by event management, with just enough time for people to maneuver into position for the next show. Crowds were managed well with the use of wristband access points, well placed fencing and sturdy aluminum barriers.

Even with a busy lineup, Capital Chaos TV was able to get some quality interview time with two California bands, Santa Cruz and New Language.

The VIP section offered additional amenities, like shorter lines at the food and event merchandise vendors, shaded rest areas, plenty of seating areas, air-conditioned restrooms , a giant viewing screen with quality audio, and easy access to hilltop viewing areas for both the Kolas and Monster Energy stages. If having more opportunity to sit down, shade trees, additional food options and less walking are something you’re looking for, then the VIP package is worth the extra cost.

Overall, I felt safe in every area of the event. Even with the regular pushing and shoving that can be expected at an event of this size, almost everybody was polite enough to say, “excuse me” or at least try not to knock people down as they squeezed by. Unless, of course, you were intentionally (or unintentionally) caught in any of the circle pits that formed near the front of almost every show. There was plenty of event staff available to come to the aid of those that did experience injuries, along with well staffed mobile medical crews.

It’s a 20-minute drive from downtown San Jose to the Mount Hamilton GrandView Restaurant. From the terrace of the restaurant, the Santa Cruz Mountains turn violet as the sun dips and the waters of the San Francisco Bay shimmer. The planes glide below on their way to Mineta, and birds drift lazily on the thermals. As the sun disappears over the mountains, the lights of the city dance below.

The dining room, cleanly decorated with white tablecloths, lets the landscape take center stage. The waiters, many of whom are career servers, are dressed in classic tuxes and pride themselves on being exceptionally welcoming, knowledgeable, and sensitive to the diner’s needs. Maurice Carrubba, the proud owner, begins his tour of the restaurant by explaining his vision of an Italian steakhouse with a hint of Hollywood glamour, “a little old-school love,” as he puts it.

Maurice never planned to buy the GrandView. He was in the market for an investment property when he met a persistent realtor who was able, after a month of regular phone calls, to convince Maurice to climb the winding road up Mt. Hamilton to see something special.

Maurice listened to the history of how a stagecoach hotel and tavern built in 1884 evolved into a restaurant that had served the community for decades. The original building had burned, its replacement had burned, the building itself needed work, but the view, even in the rainy mist and faint light at dusk, was spectacular.

He bought the property with his brother and partner, Giuseppe Carrubba, and began an extensive remodel. As he worked, Maurice left the gates open, and locals wandered in, wondering about his plans. Maurice had envisioned an event space, rented out for corporate events or weddings. Yet as more people came to tell their stories and to beg him not to close the restaurant to the public, Maurice’s vision began to shift. “Through the remodel, I started telling people, ‘I’ll keep it open for one year, and you support us. If I see that you’re here, we’ll keep it open for another hundred years.’ ”

After the tour of the restaurant, Maurice hops onto his John Deere Gator to show off his farm. When the 50-acre parcel, just yards from the restaurant, came up for sale, Maurice didn’t hesitate. This old cattle farm, its soil packed and dry from decades of grazing, could one day supply the restaurant with everything it needed.

Though Maurice has never been a farmer, he’s not dabbling—he knows the name of every obscure heirloom bean variety in the raised garden beds. He is proud of his restaurant, but his face beams while he is at his farm. Eager now to show off the purebred goats and black and white speckled hens, he races across the fields, slowing down so as not to startle the horses grazing along the fence.

At the highest point of land are rows and rows of kale, beans, peppers, and tomatoes. Maurice points to the tomatoes. “This is the end of the tomatoes—they’ve been left on the vine a little long, so we’ll use them to make sauce.” Everything is planted with a purpose in mind—to create a seed-to-table experience, connecting the land and the food. Freshly cut mint from the lush herb garden goes to the bar for signature cocktails; basil and parsley go to the kitchen.

A full moon rises, giving the land an ethereal quality. Maurice seems to know that this is a special place and that it’s not just his enthusiasm that makes guests smile as radiantly as he does. The bucolic spot sits above the stresses of the valley below and offers a connection to a nostalgic vision of the past. Maurice dreams of an Arcadian paradise, a place that not only supplies his restaurant with the highest quality produce, but offers refuge for those who have lost their connection to the land. He envisions one day hosting a farmers’ market and growing Christmas trees. He wants to welcome school groups, show children that there is more to our great wide world than iPad screens.
