Wang Chuan Feng Hua Lu (忘川风华录) Masterpost

Wang Chuan Feng Hua Lu (忘川风华录) is a Vocal synth (Vocaloid and SynthV) music project. It consists of songs themed around different figures throughout Chinese history. The project is a collaboration between different artists and creatives, with music and videos featuring prominent traditional Chinese elements. The project's title translates to "The Records of Magnificence of the Wangchuan" - In Chinese mythology, "Wangchuan" (or River of Forgetting) is a river in the Underworld that can rid one of their past life's memories, similar to the river Lethe.

A mobile game adaptation has also been developed by NetEast. Unfortunately, I haven't played it so I can't give much insight on it. However, I assume that its premise is similar to that of the idea behind the project as a whole: all these historical figures meeting each other in the Underworld after they died. Maybe.

This is where I take several characters from different Chinese media (mostly cnovels and cdrama) and run a poll on which one is the 'best'. What does best mean? It's up to you! I am here to talk about my OCs!

Because @elianaroselight and I have talked about them so much we developed 4 RPs about them (that have been going for over a year now) and got a whole system going

Buckle up, it's long

First, there's Ju Ling's family, who now has 3 mates and 7 children (without counting the ones she lost). Her mates are Ju Jing the oni, Ri Shi and the white tiger of the west, Baihu. Her siblings are Hua and Ping, who have, respectively, the vermilion bird of the south, Zhuque, and the azure dragon of the east, Qinglong, as their mates.

Then there's Yue Shi and his mate Fengbao. Feng became friends with their doctor Jiahao, who had two twin kits that became friends (and enemies if you ask Shu) with Feng's kits. Jiahao's husband is Pingyi, who teaches sign language, and is friends with Ju Jing because he and his sister (name missing) were all at the same orphanage. Pingyi is also Cixin's teacher, Zan's adopted son. He's not mute or def but has trouble speaking and often communicates by repeating sounds or words (in the voice of the person that spoke them). Cixin and Tai Shi (one of Ju Ling's cubs) have pet ducks together.

The biological mothers of Tai Shi and the rest of the tiger cubs are Lan (who has Tai Shi, 2 tiger cubs that she lost, and Ju, a lynx cub she adopted) and An (who has Jingyi, Ling Min, Heng and Yawen) Tai Shi's dad is Qiong Qi, no one likes him. Baihu is the father of the other cubs. Depending on the AU, An and Lan are platonic mates with Ju Ling and the others and live in a huge ass house.

But anyway, Baihu is a big sweetheart who does his best to be a good baba. He loves seafood and spicy food and Ju Jing and Ri Shi very much feed into that. Lan grew a passion for gardening and plants and it was a great bonding moment for her and Ju Ling.

But anyway, all of An's cubs are adorable Jingyi likes plants and helps her moma with her garden. She even found a salamander once and wanted to keep it as a pet. Heng loves the sky and the sea, which works well with his uncle Ping, who works at an aquarium, and his yeye who used to be an astrologist. Yawen likes the sky, but specifically the clouds. He loves Wukong's nimbus and asks him to conjure it any time he comes over. And Ling Min is a little fighter that loves dragons and adores her gugu Mei.

Then there is Bai He's family. Obviously, her parents are the general Ba and Beng. Her wife is Zhi Hao, a gibbon demon the size of a wardrobe which works as a blacksmith. So you know, guaranteed thirst trap. Their children are Hua Mei, the oldest girl, Hao the only boy, and their twins Guiyin and Li Lei who is named after the empress of the kingdom of women, who Bai He is friend with.

There's also Kai Hu's group of friends! They call themselves the lost ones because Kai's cousin calls him Peter Pan. They are Chao a cat fish demon (not a catfish. a cat and fish demon), Juan a one-eyed cat demon, Fen a bunny demon, Bo the only human and Huangshu, a gibbon demon that was adopted into Kai's family and became his cousin.

And then there's Shu's group (she is one of Yue Shi and Fengbao's triplets kits), aka Lupin gang wannabe. Shu is of course Lupin, then we have Leale, a dog demon who is 100% based on Jigen, I'm not even going to hide that, and just discovered that he has 2 siblings, and Rampion, who was made as a joke with Skelle but he fits in this group of misfits. And I can't forget the Fujiko of the group, Junjie, who is also one of Jiahao's kits. The other one of Jiahao's kits is Xinyi who married Bao, Shu's second brother.

Last group that I can remember is Ling Min's family. Her mate is Hebo, a leopard gecko demon, and their adopted kids: Xu Qiu a dear and lion demon, Bian a they/them human, Hongbo an otter demon and Wuyue a baby lizard demon that Xu Qiu found in the snow

2nd Year, Spring, 1st Month [5 February – 6 March], Xiao Yan dispatched Wang Shennian to rob Nanyan. Decreed the General who Assists the State, Zhangsun Zhi, as provisional General who Pacifies the South, to be Commander-in-Chief, and lead Army Director Bing Qiu, and others with the Five Armies to chastise him.

On dinghai [13 February], the various states of Humi, Bujiumo, Niumi, Banshi, Xiwanjin, Xindouna, and Yuebaniu all dispatched envoys to court to present.

On renchen [18 February], the states of Yada and Bozhi dispatched envoys who came to court, and tributed one white elephant.

On yiwei [21 February], the state of Gaochang dispatched envoys to court with tribute.

On bingshen [22 February], the King of Zhongshan, Ying, advanced to pressure Xiao Yan's Changbo Defence Post.

On wuxu [24 February!!], they dispersed at night, he killed and wounded several thousand.

On dingyou [23 February!!], he took Wuyang Pass. He seized Yan's General of Clouds Cavalry, the State-Founding Marquis of Songzi county, Ma Guang, General of the Best of the Army, the State-Founding Count of Qianling, Peng Wengsheng, General of Valiant Cavalry, the State-Founding Earl of Dangyang county, Xu Yuanji, and others, 26 generals, and took prisoner more than 7 000 people. 3rd Month, guiwei [10 April], the various states of Moshiluo, Ayaoshe, Sutudu, and Difuluo all dispatched envoys to court to present.

Summer, 4th Month, jiyou [6 May], decreed that due to the starvation at the Wuchuan Garrison, to open the granaries to relieve and aid.

On jiazi [21 May], a decree said:

The sage succour his generation. Afterwards matters decline and prosper, some things are corrected and some adapted, systems have no consistent existence. The previous court, as the cloud carriage had just moved, made a lofty foundation to begin the framework. The common people of the He and Luo, moving during past turbulence, and continually coming to new dwellings, were still not able to approach. South-west of Yique, crowding Man filled their gatherings. At Mianyang, the thieves city, connected towns constructed defence posts. The foolish and stupid Ba in their hearts were not yet pure and earnest. For those reasons they temporarily held down beginning the kindness of fostering, and for the moment put off sternness in the laws against perfidy.

Now the Imperial City has Heavenly strength, it is not similar to before. Yang, Ying, Jing, and Yi, all are fully in our possession. Protecting the defiles [from?] the various Man, [we] entangle [those who] do not return to adherence. In the feelings of Shang and Luo's people, sincerity doubles from former days[?].

Though at Fan, Xiang and southward, humaneness deviate from guiding the government[?], restraints isolating them from reform, is not the people's fault. However followers of the undependable are quick to rob and plunder, butchering and harming the virtuous and good, parting people from their fathers and older brothers. Yan's brutality truly is also deep.

Readily can release they who have robbed the people and show them great kindness. To relinquish these vicious thieves is not the command's mistake.[?] Also direct they who hem the borders to the provinces and garrisons, from now and afterwards, not listen to the robbers and bandits from outside the frontier, violating being a crime similar to within the frontier. If the provinces and garrisons' masters and generals understand and tolerate, and do not investigate, convict them according to the statutes.

5th Month [3 June – 2 July], the state of Gaoli dispatched envoys to court to present.

On xinchou [27 June], the Emperor, due to the droughts, decreased meals and cleared away the bell frames, and forbid and stopped butchering and slaughter.

On jiachen [30 June], favoured Hualin Chief Pavilion, and personally recorded the prisoners and convicts. Crimes punished by death and below were reduced one grade.

6th Month [3 July – 1 August], the state of Gaochang dispatched envoys to court to present.

On xinhai [7 July], a decree said:

The river and seas regions are similar, their chariots and books ought to be as one. The various provinces' tracks and paths from south to north are not equal. Now can extend directives to the four regions, to make distant and close not be of two kinds.

Autumn, 7th Month, guiwei [8 August], the state of Qidan dispatched envoys to court to present.

8th Month, dingwei [1 September], the state of Dengzhi dispatched envoys to court to present.

On wushen [2 September], used the Heir of the state of Dengzhi, Xianglanti, as the King of his state.

The various states of Gaochang, Wuji, and Kumoxi all dispatched envoys to court to present.

9th Month, xinsi [5 October], ennobled the former King of Beihai's son Hao as King of Beihai.

On renwu [6 October], decreed to settle the names of the various gates and doors.

Winter, 10th Month, guichou [6 November], used the Minister of Works, the King of Guangyang, Jia, as Minister over the Masses.

Ahhh Wangxian!! I actually have a whole thread about how iconic Wangxian is for Chinese media and queers here.

Basically, beyond the really lovely story they have in canon, they’re actually a huge deal in real life too because not only did they give rise to danmei outside of China (a lot of thanks has to be given to them for the fact that all these gay Chinese novels now have English translations!)…

They also helped really kickstart China’s recent animation (donghua) boom!

The donghua adaptation of the novel came out in 2018, soon after their studio had done Quan Zhi Gao Shou in 2017, and both series did decently internationally and it continued to spiral from there. Now China’s animation industry has so many different creative series, but also the studio behind Mo Dao Zu Shi got a huge boost thanks to adapting this novel as well. ^^

Hell, Mo Dao Zu Shi also has a manhua and a cdrama and an audio drama adaptation besides the donghua and the original novel, so you can see how popular this ship is. And of course, the cdrama led to a boom in boys’ love cdramas in China overall too.

Back to novels though, without the popularity of Mo Dao Zu Shi and the rest of its author (MXTX)’s works (Tian Guan Ci Fu and Ren Zha Fanpai Zijiu Xitong), Seven Seas wouldn’t have seen the potential in danmei when fans reached out to them about publishing the novels officially in English. Now we have not only MXTX novels in English, but also Meatbun’s (Erha, Yuwu, Bing An Ben), Priest’s (Sha Po Lang and Zhen Hun etc), and even Meng Xi Shi (Qian Qiu).

This extends beyond Seven Seas too! We have Little Mushroom and Golden Terrace and more in English, licensed by other companies, and we’re even getting official English translations of manhua and baihe (lesbian) novels like Jing Wei Qi Shang.

It’s just…really, really cool, you know, seeing the rise of Chinese media—especially Chinese queer media, which fights censorship. And Mo Dao Zu Shi played a huge role in that rise. ^^

So like . . . I was prepared for the ending. And I don’t think it’s bad ending, although I definitely think it’s a sad ending. I get Mei Changsu’s choice and it was his right to make it. I wish he’d been honest with the others but I also get that they probably would have hog-tied him and thrown him in a basement or something.

Although tbh I have to give the side eye to the fact that Jingyan, known for military skill and competent governance, employed only Old Generals Who Don’t Actually Do War

In any case, my main complaint about the ending was that there were so many people we didn’t see! They had a cute clip of Jingyan’s kid and Tingsheng, which was obviously incredibly adorable, and we see Meng Zhi along with the ministers. But what about Xia Dong and her furry husband? Did Mu Qing ride south with his sister? How are Jingrui and his mom doing? What about Yujin, who definitely married Gong Yu and you can’t convince me otherwise? How’s Fei Liu handling post Su-gege life???

And there are characters we don’t even know what happened to! Whatever happened to Qin Banruo after she was captured? What about Xia Qiu? Was Xia Dong ever able to explain to him what had happened?

On the upside, the Emperor seems to have died, so that’s a plus.

Don’t get me wrong, I know that this show was dense. I saw a description saying ‘every scene is load-bearing’. But I still feel like it would have been nice to cut down a bit on the musical numbers and making the audience cry to check in with a few other people.

ETA: given the lack of dialogue, it is 100% possible to assume that Lin Chen came up with a miraculous antidote to the Bingxu Pill and Mei Changsu is off living in Jianghu. Who knows what that letter to Nihuang actually said? Jingyan could just be holding a funeral for Lin Shu because it’s easier if everyone thinks he’s dead! Now he can just sneak back into the city as a commoner and he and Jingyan can have secret visits together and he and Jingrui and Yujin are all great friends.

Yeah, that totally works. I’mma go with that.
