was talking about how hu.a cheng really does have this adorable personal arc where he had waited 800 years to prove himself to his object of religion only for his god to immediately surprise him by his humble nature, strange quirks, and returned affections, and how over the course of the novel he really gets to know the person past the god just as xie l.ian is allowed in to see the soul behind the ghost king. 

then at the end of the novel hu,a cheng is able to express to him that he understands him in and out now -- he’s seen all that xie l.ian has experienced, has witnessed and felt it all, that he cares and loves him so much that he would martyr himself him -- but only now, having truly met him, he knows that xie l.ian would never let him do that out of his own love and compassion for hu.a cheng. and from their time together, hu.a cheng finally sees their relationship as foils, equals, partners able to empathize and living for each other.

E-Ming

HC stated early on when asked that he dug out his own eye because he went “mad”. This was during the time he was under the effects all ghosts/demons do when Mt TongLu opens and a small group of mortals was unfortunately caught in the middle of the mountain. Rather than wreck havoc on them, he chose to dig out his eye and weaponize it to save them. This act of bravery and selflessness caused a rare occurrence, Hua Cheng was able to ascend to heaven as a ghost. But ascension was not something he wanted, nor was being a ‘good person’ the reason he could not be laid to rest. He was still waiting to meet someone, a god who had already fallen, who at this time still needed protection in his point of view. It felt like a sham, that the heavens which cursed his existence when he was alive, would take him in now. So in a flash of red, Hua Cheng jumped back down from the heavens and continued on his path to becoming a Ghost King. It left him with deep resentment not only for the heavens but most of all, himself as a reminder that they pushed his God out too. 

Thus we have the origin story of his silver scimitar, the hilt decorated with an at times, spinning red eye.

His weapon E-ming is obviously is a representation of some his buried feelings in its sentient “puppy-like” behavior. The deep, barely contained, hatred going on between HC constantly chastising E-Ming, slapping it around, calling it useless and trash is due to the memories associated with its origins. 

Since HC hates being weak, it can be presumed that him punishing E-ming constantly is him punishing himself for his failures but ultimately, I would say it is mostly over his intense feelings of not being enough. E-ming’s power comes from all that childhood resentment of the abuse and stigma he faced in the time he was born to his death for having a red “monstrous” eye. Being beaten, isolated, chased away, made to crave death and rage on.

When he went mad and carved out his eye, HC forged the life stealing silver scimitar known as E-ming to wreck revenge upon all who had hurt not him, but his treasured person. It was to act as the judge and jury for all who wronged the both of them, and forever be his shield against those who would cause further harm to him and XL.

HC’s self loathing is so strong, he sometimes can’t stand to see this blade be adored and siddle up to XL. It’s not necessarily because of jealousy, it’s because HC himself feels that despite all these sacrifices he has made that no part of him is worthy of XL. Yet around XL his blade acts on its own, revealing his true feelings no matter how much he wants to bury them, seeking out the tender affection it craves to receive and full of the childlike adoration it has yearned to give for 8 centuries.

I was having a discussion on disc about the color red in Chinese tradition as a symbol of love, happiness, and luck and how the term for red is “Hong” when it dawned on all of us that it seems kind of fucked up and horribly ironic that Hua Cheng’s mortal/childhood name was Hong Hong-er (loosely equivalent to, “little red”) which was basically like calling him lucky or joyous when from birth everyone saw him as an omen of bad fortune and pushed him out/abused him for it which ultimately led to the bad fate that befell him as a teen... and I,, thought deeper about it because he was born with one red eye so that could have been why they started calling him that and it only makes it w o r s e with this double meaning --

going further on that, Hauhua’s whole thing and why he’s fretting over XL being manipulated and abused is because he wants to protect XL from enduring the pain that he himself lived through until it drove him to sui.cide and literal death. it drives me nuts that people often wanna claim that HC had no personality or development in the books when he had so much, it just wasn’t obvious for XL’s lens. 

there's a huge characterization jump that people underestimate in the god cave scene, especially. the statues represent a state of mind & side of Huahua that in that moment they're all seeing this arguably creepy ass obsession of his come to light, he's matured enough to feel guilty about and question his own behaviors and feelings. the fact that XL even looks him in the eye and while he doesn’t whitewash what he’s done, he knows it’s not important to what needs to be talked about between them at that moment.

this also ties back to how HC puts XL on such a pedestal as his one true god, and how over the course of the book you can spot minute details where he starts to love XL as the person he is, not as a fallen prince who was wronged --- but a awkward and kind of silly old guy who he routinely has to reminds not to eat dried/old food just because he’s hungry and who spends his time trying to earnestly help(assisting in farming in puqi) and teach others(teaching HC how to write, taking in Ban Yu.e) to improve their lives. you can see how HC is caught off guard by this multiple times, how he sometimes is so surprised by genuine behavior that he flinches. he mellows out considerably in his interactions with others around XL when they start being around each other so often it becomes domestic.

in the same way XL learns over the book that even when he’s scum on the bottom of someone’s boot, he can still be loved and find happiness even when faced with failure, HC gains some perspective; he learns he can trust someone to understand him and not judge or punish him for his shortcomings or happenstance (even if sometimes he’s not in the right). HC is a very complex broken character that i think gets wrongly written off because he presents himself as a smooth operator with a bad boy streak and it makes me just kshgsdkjgsdg

THE FIVE FEATURES ARE THE SOUL.

Since ancient times, the people of Xian Le had believed that the spiritual aura of a person resided upon the five facial features; the spirit of a person was on their face, and the best must be offered to the heavens. Thus, in the midst of a ceremony, the Martial Warrior must wear a golden mask to hide their features, because his face could only be appreciated by the gods, and the mortals have no right to see it.

I was rereading the God-Pleasing Parade chapters from book 2 today when I stumbled upon this quote and it gave me a Big Think on HC and how he views himself a monster, ugly to society. There’s so much that can be unpacked from this quote, which I will touch on but try to keep it short and centered on HC mostly but we’ll see fgsdgs I just wanna talk about my muse feelins sfsdf

With the information of this quote, it opens up a whole new perspective on the horrors of those last years of HC’s mortality and kingdom of Xian Le itself, which fell in part to an epidemic that caused bumps to form on victim’s faces and body that slowly transformed into human faces which slowly consumed the person inside out. It was meant to make the people acknowledge the suffering of the people of the neighboring Yong An nation which received no help during famine and by the Gods’ punishment, reminded the people of Xian Le they were not the pinnacle of civilization - thus the face of their nation was also marred. Thus the nation’s soul was tainted and destroyed.

With that in mind, the devastation this epidemic wrecked upon the mental health of that nation can easily be segued into how heavily HC views his own facial marring also as his own soul being tainted, incomplete, or even worse--monstrous.

HC said softly, “If I was ugly,”

“Huh?” XL gaped.

HC finally turned his head slightly, “If my real face is ugly, would you still want to see it?” XL was taken aback, “Is it? Although there’s no real reason, but I think your real face mustn’t be that bad.”

“Who knows,” HC said half jokingly, “What if I’m discolored, disfigured, ugly, monstrous and horrible, what will you do?”

At first XL thought this line of inquiry was rather fascinating. So the number one demon king of the ages, feared by the heavens, would care about his looks? But when he thought about it deeply, he didn’t think it very funny anymore.

It’s to be noted that HC’s true form is unknown to most of the world. Even the appearance he first greets XL in is a two-eyed, wealthy looking teenager. This book loves to play on themes of masks/disguises, and for HC his ability to shapeshift is his own mask to hide the reality of what he is--and more so, how he views himself. We know by the 3000xth time XL mentions it in the first three books alone that HC is no ordinary beauty in his true form, even endowed with the traditionally Chinese beauty ideal of having a widow’s peak to boot! And yet, he hesitates in the aforementioned quote because he’s “disfigured”. Because he’s “no good” thanks to the gaping hole in his face. 

It’s easy to think that HC believes himself ugly because he lost his eye, but I think the loss of his eye (and treatment of E-Ming thereafter) is tied in more with his sadness/regret to not have been able to protect the face of perfection to him from being tainted--from pain. 

More likely this view of himself stems during his childhood in Xian Le, actually. A time when he was discriminated, bullied, starved, to the point of HC developing a deeply rooted resentment for humanity. And why? Because beneath those dirty bandages he always wore over one eye in the brief 10-12 years XL met him, HC was born with a “demonic” red eye. To be born under a star of misfortune with such a disfigurement, it was likely seen by the people of Xian Le in the very way they saw the Human Face Disease -- a mark upon the perfection of their peoples. A blatant curse upon the gods existing on the face, meant to be held as something perfect for them. It’s little wonder HC felt wronged at a young age, to be seen this way, but it clearly effects him even 800 years later. 

Perhaps he’s taken to heart these odd, forgotten traditions of Xian Le in the same way he covets his Xian Le vambraces, his Xian Le prince. In not having a complete “five features”, his soul is not intact. Is not perfect. These are his vulnerabilities, the things that remind him he is a monster--but also perhaps, the things that remind him that a monster can also be human.

Anyway, let me just drop some sad thoughts n info here about Hua Cheng’s, deep, deep battle with his self esteem and worthiness.

“I’m suffering! Everyday, I wish I’d die. Everyday, I want to kill off everyone in this world, and then kill myself! I’m living in agony! For what should I live for in this world? What does it mean to live?”

These words were such an oof when he cried them out to the small little shrine he built for Xie Lian. He was no younger than thirteen at the time, beaten and shamed and home life was clearly not good for little Hong Hong-er that he was better off sleeping in a cruddy shrine. Hua Cheng had been born with red left eye and it marked him as a monster or creature by others. It’s the reason he bandaged his head, later because the children and citizens of Xian Le went from mocking him calling him ugly, to beating and terrorizing him. 

It’s a huge point of weakness for him, this insecurity -- being seen as an outcast and ugly. It carries well into his adultlife, the deep impression of thinking “I’m ugly”.  IT’s wild to think someone that young felt that much despair, to the point even Xie Lian and his fellow gods MQ/FX were shocked by it,

Hua Cheng chuckled for a bit, and suddenly said, “If,” Xie Lian turned his head to face him, “If?”

Hua Cheng didn’t turn around, but continued to look at the dilapidated ceiling of the shrine, and Xie Lian observed the left side face of the handsome young man.

Hua Cheng said softly, “If I was ugly,” “Huh?” Xie Lian gaped.

Hua Cheng finally turned his head slightly, “If my real face is ugly, would you still want to see it?” Xie Lian was taken aback, “Is it? Although there’s no real reason, but I think your real face mustn’t be that bad.”

“Who knows,” Hua Cheng said half jokingly, “What if I’m discolored, disfigured, ugly, monstrous and horrible, what will you do?”

He deflects his insecurities often with humor  ( ex; wanna get married gege? / just joking ! ). Of course, the Hua Cheng we know in the novels is handsome as all hells, ethereal, strong and powerful to the point where multiples times random citizens and passerbys will comment on it to XL or ask if he’s married, or even try to come woo him with good cooking ( jokes on them, he likes ge ge’s burnt poison soup! ). Yet I don’t think it’s by design his ghostly form is attractive. He has an aesthetic, no doubt, but it’s only later over time that he seems to think that perhaps he is kind of good looking because he still is at random times self-deprecating to the points of thinking himself too ugly to be with Xie Lian, who to him is a walking picture of untouchable beauty.

This ghost king that shook up the heavens really is fighting his biggest demons with himself in self-esteem and a short lived, depressing childhood.

Thank Xie Lian that he spoke to that child in the ramshackle temple that day, even though speaking to followers was illegal, and telling him that he should believe in Him. That single beacon of light, that answer in a time of darkness, quite literally saved a young boy’s life a 2nd time from what it could have been.

Of course I could expand deeper on his sense of worthiness to Xie Lian, but I think that would warrant another post specifically on their relationship and Hua Cheng’s huuuuuge idol worship.

Keep thinking about how HC has a ‘demonic scent’ in canon that’s highly appealing/desirable to other ghosts because he’s so much more powerful than the average demon or ghost and they apparently can differentiate “low level trash” from top of the food chain entities.

POVERTY

today’s sad thought is dedicated to how emaciated Hua Cheng appears in every instance Xie Lian met him as a child that he never looked his age( ie; looking 6-7 when he was 10, looking barely 10 at 12-13), and how even now as a grown adult he remains characteristically slender and pale(besides, being a ghost ykno). he would have refused to eat, rather placing his scraps of food as offerings to Xie Lian’s altar if not for the crown prince’s divine intervention encouraging him to eat. still, i think he was heavily neglected and probably learned how to earn/gather food on the backstreets of Xian Le from a young age.

So the Hua Cheng as one sees now appears lanky and probably has a pretty boney waist. That isn’t to say he’s not strong, for he was a gifted young soldier, however malnourishment has its effects on growth....

DIANXIA LOVING HOURS

one of hc’s favorite things to do is hold xl’s waist. while he never gets tired of holding his hand, there’s something about putting his arm around his side and tugging him close-- in having the full length of his body by his side. it’s grounding. it’s safe. he also likes to get away with doing it when gege’s distracted playing hero ( “san lang, hold on tight!” “okay.” *squeeze* ), though catching him off guard and making him blush is just as satisfying for him tbh!
