Hello! I am newbie at tumblr and read at your page that reblogging artists' work is a bad thing. Why? I thought it is good and help to get them up on the front page :) Thank you for answer!
Hello, hello! I’m glad you asked and I have no issue explaining :) Reblogging an artist work is a good thing. However, reposting it is not. There is a MASSIVE difference between reblogging and reposting, and there are different types of reposts.
Reblogging art from an artist is a great thing because it grants attention to their work in a manor the artist deemed acceptable. The artist themselves posted the work to their own blog as an original post, and when you reblog that post, it links back immediately to the artists blog and gives them the proper notes and credit they deserve for creating such amazing work. It also shares the work in a controlled manner for the artist to keep track of.
Reposting is another matter entirely. Reposting is where you see art you really like, save the image or work onto your device, and repost it as an original post on your own blog even though you didn’t create the work or ask permission to share it. In doing this, you’re not only stripping the credit from the artist who created the work regardless of what type of work it is (illustrations, graphics, writing, etc.), you are essentially stealing and hurting the artist by doing this. Reposting any works that you did not create yourself without express consent from the creator is a very bad thing and it makes a lot of amazing artists leave fandom entirely. The ONLY time reposting is acceptable is if it is an authorized reprint.
Sourced Reposting is where you see art you really like, save it to your device, and repost it as an original post without permission, but still source back to the original artist. THIS IS STILL BAD. You should always ask an artist for permission before sharing their works, not just out of respect, but because some artists could get into a lot of trouble thanks to reposts, and can also lose work thanks to reposts if they’re in the creative work field. You may think you are helping an artists by sharing their work in this way, but in reality; you could be severely harming them and their careers.
Authorized Reposting is when you see art you really like, and then ASK THE CREATOR if you can share their work on another website or use it for another purpose from what the artist originally intended (sharing on tumblr, using for icon, etc.). If the creator approves and you properly credit and link them for the work you are sharing; that type of reposting is fine. THIS IS THE ONLY TIME REPOSTING IS OKAY!!
Regardless of this though, if the artist posts on tumblr, you should ALWAYS reblog from them and give them proper credit. Maybe even leave nice messages for them in your tags or directly on your relog. If they post outside of tumblr, but you want to share their work; ask permission. If they refuse, respect that. If they grant permission, source and credit them properly, etc.
