The fights I am interested, arbitrarily ranked and why
Alexa Grasso vs Claudia Gadelha - Grasso was closer than she’s ever been to being a title contender when she came up just short vs Esparza. What she take away from that fight? For the moment, JJ and Andrade don’t hold the belt so that means Gadelha could realistically get herself another shot with some timely wins. How has Mark Henry helped manage the holes in her cardio and boxing game? Or is it too late?
Carlos Diego Ferreira vs Anthony Pettis - we get to find out how good CDF is with his new striking skills. Always a great grappler and competent wrestler, CDF has come along as a striker in a similar vein to Rafael Dos Anjos over the last two years. He sets such a high pace and is able to throw in fluid combination. Pettis, who’s shown weakness to guys who can push him towards the cage, is the perfect litmus rest of how profficient he is at this approach.
Tim Elliott vs Askar Askarov - Askarov’s UFC debut was a bonkers back and forth with Brandon Moreno in which Askarov tried to drag Moreno into a grappling match but couldn’t keep it there fully. It ended in a draw. I can imagine a fight with an equally scrambly, more willing grappler in Tim Elliott will result in anything other than pure scrambling magic on the mat.
Nasrat Haqparast vs Drew Dober - In a division where nobody is ready til they’re ready, Haqparast is the most “ready looking” 155er I’ve seen in a minute. Dude has poise and skills beyond his years and experience and a style built for winning long fights. And Dober is the type of guy who will make him work for the win. Should be a banger.
Andre Fili vs Sodiq Yusuff - While Fili has tamed some of the Wilder parts of his game that made him a more dangerous finisher, he’s become a far more comfortable striker as of late. While I can’t root for Yusuff because of his camp, he’s shown some amazing promise. I can’t help but feel though, after his recent bouts, that he’s foregoing some of his defensive skills in chase of being “exciting”. Fili is the exact type of opponent to exploit that mindset and edge out a slow paced kickboxing match up.
Maycee Barber vs Roxanne Modafferi - I’m not sold on Barber as a better fighter than PVZ. I think she’s a tremendous athlete but I see a lot that’s exploitable about her game and I’m worried that the openness of the 125 division is going to see her elevated to a title fight before she’s ready. She has shown some ability to change up tact between rounds when things aren’t going her way though. Roxanne Modafferi on the other hand is someone who’s built up the technical aspects of her game late in her career, beating more inexperienced, athletically superior opponents in the process. My worry for this one isn’t that Barber gets exposed (she’s young, she can improve) but that she KOs Roxy early and we don’t see any noticeable improvements in her game when she appears to be on a collision course with Valentina Shevchenko.
Was gonna write a short thing about how Cowboy could beat McGregor but Then I realized I don’t care.
