Matchup #22: Ex (Puyo Puyo Tetris) vs The Sixth Doctor (Doctor Who)

On the left, we see Ex! Wow, the nominations for this one were particularly passionate. Among other, they mentioned:

While I did really like what I have played of Puyo Puyo Puzzle Pop so far and while I do think that it has potentially the strongest narrative in the series, I honestly really miss the writing style of the Puyo Puyo Tetris games and just how fucking insane they were. Don’t get me wrong, the game’s writing is still really fun and I’d gladly welcome a solid narrative considering how it is one of Puyo Puyo Tetris 1’s biggest flaws, but we still sadly don’t really get shit like this anymore.

1. How in the world do you consistently draw. I know you’ve probably been asked this but I really need to know.. I’ve been suffering horribly from art block and I want to go back to drawing 💔 (I had a very cute Father’s Day art idea with Ken and A but I had no motivation…)

no idea. i don't get art block, if i don't draw for too long i get really Weird and i have to draw. i get like Super Annoyed if i don't have any time to draw for a day. sorry, i'm the last person you should ask for art block advice.. i've heard some people say just doodling, drawing something you like to draw the most, or drawing something you never would have thought to draw helps? can't give you any personal advice

yes, i've heard of it. i don't play many games so i haven't really looked into it. i see that it has multiplayer options, and it doesn't look painfully complicated, so maybe if i can pry myself from my drawing tablet (unlikely) i'll think about it..

June had artfight right around the corner and thats my icon for the stardust team! July was artfight, of course, and though it was hard to choose which piece to use to highlight but i chose the piece i made for @/selahsketches August was my art for my splatoon ska band ocs, The Skankin Seahorses September was my art for me and my partner celebrating the release of the co-op update for Cult of The Lamb October had a lot of art! I think part of this are the more organized translation and preservation efforts from Japanese → English and of course the localization of Puyo Puyo Tetris 1/2

TL;DR: pretty good character complex and MATTHEW MERCER’S VOICE DOES THINGS TO ME This character basically has no chance at winning whatsoever, but it’s worth a try. Ex is literally the most tragic character I’ve ever seen but what is that outfit. Bro’s wearing possibly two(??) pairs of pants, his dress shirt has an unnecessary ammount of frills, the confusing suspenders that he just. BRO do NOT get me started on that bright ass pink bowtie. Despite his atrocious outfit, I swear he’s a good character. He was a father who had to leave his normal life and his only daughter to serve a possibly eternal job watching over the universes to make sure everything is peaceful and all, supposedly against his own will. But that occupation took a heavy mental toll on him because over time, the people he cherishes, even his own daughter, slowly forgot about him. Even worse, his daughter acts rude toward him, and considers the robot he built to watch over her as her actual father instead of Ex. Because of his lonliness, he literally caused the events of Puyo Puyo Tetris. He’s quite literally the embodiment of a sad kitten. Ok anyway I’m not sure if this is even propaganda at this point but I’m telling you, he played a good character. AND HIS VOICE. OH MY GOD. I can’t quite put my finger on it. It’s so relaxing to listen to.

Been seeing some people call the state Sig is in throughout the course of Puzzle Pop, "demon Sig." But honestly? There's a hint in the game that it might be the opposite, in a way.

It's not very big, but there's still FINAL STORY SPOILERS FOR PUZZLE POP UNDER THE CUT. Consider yourself warned.

So, here's Puyo Puyo Puzzle Pop's final boss theme:

If you're familiar the soundtrack of Puyo 20th Anniversary, you may recognize this song as an arrangement of Sig's theme, Rapid Carefree Advice (or Easygoing March, if you prefer):

But there's something that can be heard in Sig's 20th theme that isn't in the Puzzle Pop final boss music. Can you tell what it is?

For the past 20 years, each successive Puyo Puyo game has (eventually) included Crimson Wave!, the battle theme of Possessed Klug (aka the Crimson Soul, aka the other half of the demon Sig is a reincarnation of), as a music option in Free Battle. You probably know the one, but if not, here it is. The relevant part is the melody from 22 seconds, to 47 seconds.

That segment is considered the Crimson Soul's musical motif. Both Sig and Klug's themes quote this motif in both 15th and 20th Anniversaries.

That does, in fact, include Rapid Carefree Advice-- it's just in major key, not minor. Listen to the segment starting from 48 seconds and ending at the 1:18 mark. It might take a few listens to really hear it, but it's there. Can you hear it?

Now. Go back to listen to Puzzle Pop's final boss music.

Do you notice anything missing now?

The Crimson Wave! motif isn't heard at all. It ALMOST sounds like it might be at a couple points, but try as you might, you won't hear it anyway remotely like you hear it in the other two songs.

So what does this mean?

If the motif is associated with the demon, and Sig's status as (half of) the demon's reincarnation is reflected by his theme music including the motif in it's entirety...

What does it mean for it to not be there, when Sig loses control of his power?

My personal guess is, as we've seen from Satan (in 20th and partially in Quest's story mode) and Squares (in Tetris 2), too much raw power contained in one place makes some bad stuff happen. Satan unleashing more of his power causes time and space to start collapsing around him. Squares holding on all the power he had amassed from Marle and the rest of the cast threatened to destroy his body in an explosion.

And Sig's power? It seems that Sig's power can gain a violent will of its own that can overcome and potentially destroy the being that holds onto it.

Sig in Puzzle Pop is what happens when the demonic aspect of his being doesn't (or can't) keep the red power in check.

As for what to call that state/personality, if not demon Sig... well, a lot of my friends have taken to calling him "Sign't" (as in "not Sig"). I've taken to calling him that myself, now that my previous headcanoned name doesn't work anymore. But if Sign't sounds too silly for you (and you don't mind putting Kingdom Hearts into your Puyo Puyo), I'd like to propose "Heartless Sig."
