you watch in dismay as your ball floats away.

you roll your eyes playfully. "i can't shoot straight to save my life."

kazuha raises an eyebrow, then smirks. "well, i guess it fits, considering you're not exactly straight either."

you laugh at her remark, but before you can respond, she steps behind you. "let me help."

“ugh, not again.”

kazuha gives you a teasing look. "what is it with you and losing your ball?”

you shrug dramatically. “it’s a talent.”

without a word, she grabs a flashlight from her phone and heads toward the bushes where your ball disappeared. you watch as she crouches down, vanishing briefly into the darkness before emerging a few seconds later, holding up your ball triumphantly.

finally, as you wrap up the eighteenth and last hole, kazuha laughs and puts her arm around your shoulders. "i think we can both agree that you won.”

you scoff, "i really don’t believe that."

laughing, you give her a light shove as you both walk to return your clubs. the night air feels a little cooler now, the soft glow of the waterpark fading behind you as you make your way back to the car.

You’d had a wonderful dinner with Jake, he surprised you after work. The night was still young with stars just starting to twinkle in the sky and as he was driving home you saw a billboard advertising a nighttime mini-golf course.

“Can we go mini-golfing?!” you ask him excitedly. “It’s two exits away!”

Jake looks at the billboard apprehensive but replaces it with a soft smile.

“Sure, Sugar.”

He takes the proper exit and finds a parking spot right in front. It’s packed with families and other young couples doing date night. There was an Icee machine, cotton candy, and big pretzels in the concession stands near the entrance. Jake opened your door, helped you out and held your hand all the way up to the ticket booth.

A teenage girl stared wide-eyed as Jake smiled politely at her.

“Two for mini-golf please?” he asks. He releases your hand so he can pull out his wallet, his black Mastercard shining in the night as he hands it to her.

“S-sure,” she stutters. When she grabs the credit card she drops it and it clangs on the metal countertop. She turns tomato red as she swipes the card but it’s approved instantly and she slides it back to him. “You can pick out your ball and putter over there.”

“Thank you,” Jake smiles then tugs you along. 

You pick a neon pink ball and Jake wants you to pick one for him so you find a green one to match his eyes. You write down your names on the scorecard and wait your turn at the first hole as a family of three are going. It’s two women and a little boy about four years old, he hits the ball and follows it down the green while both moms are encouraging him and snapping some photos.

“You two can go ahead, Louis likes to whack it in,” the one closest to you says. 

“We don’t mind waiting,” you smile then turn to Jake, “Isn’t he adorable?”

“He is determined,” Jake grins. 

When they make it to the second hole, Jake has you go first and you line up for the shot. The first hole is winding with rocks alternating down as obstacles so you’re trying to aim in between them. You hit it with your putter and the ball doesn’t hit a rock until the very last one which lands your ball against the wall but it’s near the hole. 

“Good job, Sugar,” Jake praises and you smile proudly at him before moving out of his way.

It takes him a bit longer to line up his shot as you watch him carefully, he seems nervous and antsy. He swings his putter and the ball hits the very first rock, rolling right back to him.

“That’s okay, go again,” you tell him. 

He moves the ball back to its spot in front of his feet, his leather shoes shining against the outdoor lights. You back up a little to admire him in his fancy outfit playing mini-golf so you inconspicuously pull out your phone to snap a picture. 

“Hey! No flash photography,” he warns.

“Sorry,” you giggle pocketing it back into your Coach crossbody. Another gift from Jake.

He lines up again, biting his lip and hits the ball. It goes halfway down the green so you follow him to the spot. He hits two more rocks before he finally makes it to the hole. He lets you go first and you tap it in easily but he takes two more strokes. Jake looks mildly irritated as you move to hole number two but you pass it off as not playing in a while.

As you move along the course Jake becomes increasingly irritable as it takes him double the time to score than you. You get to the fifth hole where you have to hit your ball into one of three holes so it will drop down below. Yours goes in the middle and you get a hole in one but Jake’s ball is hit a little too hard and it smacks off the back wall rolling right to him. 

“Fuck,” he hisses quietly and you snap your head at him. You’ve never heard him swear before. He’s gripping the handle of his putter tightly.

“Have you played mini-golf before?” you ask carefully.

“Of course I have,” he grunts and goes again. The ball goes in the hole on the far left and you run to the edge to see it roll into a makeshift sand pit. “Where’d it go?”

“In the made-up sand pit,” you smile apologetically. The muscle in his jaw ticks and he walks past you to go down the small flight of stairs. 

You follow him just as he angles himself awkwardly on the green and wood chips so he can hit his ball. He hits it a bit too hard and goes way past the hole. He grunts again and you move in front of him.

“Hey, hey, hey, slow down,” you place your hand over his hand gripping the putter too tightly. His grip relaxes at your touch but his expression is still hard as he looks down at you. “Are you sure you’ve played before?”

“Once when I was younger. I’m used to regular golf, where you have to hit it hard. This putter is too small and this course has too many weird obstacles,” he huffs.

A snorted laugh escapes you and you cover your mouth while Jake tries to move out of your way. 

“No, no, no, I’m sorry, I’m so sorry!” you move in front of him again grabbing hold of his cheek. He pointedly avoids your eyes. “I’m not laughing at you, honey, I swear. It’s just…you’re so good at everything else, I thought this would be a piece of cake for you.”

“Yeah, well, it’s my achilles heel,” he grunts.

“If you don’t like it then why did we come?”

“Because you seemed so excited and I want you to be happy,” he finally meets your gaze.

“Oh, Jake, that’s so sweet,” you rise on your toes to kiss him softly on the lips. “We can stop if you want to.”

“No, we’re almost done and you’re enjoying yourself. Just promise me one thing?” he asks. 

“What’s that?”

“Don’t tell the guys I suck at mini-golf?”

PART 13: The Date

Last minute scheduling changes resulted in Katsuki offering to pick you up from the station rather than your apartment so he could take you out.  The text you got simply said: ‘Dinner & mini golf’ and you left your questions for later since you didn’t want him to feel self conscious (you didn’t think he had the patience for mini golf or any activities that may be crowded). It was going to be a good evening with him, because you were both excited about going out on a date. 

“I'm actually terrible at mini golf,” you confess, looking up at Katsuki as he hands you the yellow handled club. “It’s almost criminal to let me have one of these things in my hand.” 

“Good thing I literally get paid to stop crime.” His counter is met with a gentle nudge of his putter to your calf, and you roll your eyes as he leads you to the first hole. “We‘ll make a pro out of you.”

“I didn’t think you’d be big on mini golf. Small clubs, rules, a lot of people - doesn’t quite seem like your vibe.”

“I like that I don’t have to try hard. It’s nice to be good at things, but this is something I don’t care about being good at so I don’t really care to try.” 

For someone who didn’t care to try, he was pretty damn good at mini golf. It was actually a bit frustrating to watch him effortlessly sink ball after ball after ball with only a few strokes not hitting their intended target. The scorecard was thrown out after the second hole, his seven strokes compared to your fifteen proving there was no need to even try to compete or interest in keeping record of how bad you were at mini golf. 

You would give him credit for knowing when to tease and when not to tease you for your performance. Maybe he’d seen enough of Eijirou’s jokes fall flat that he knew when he’d get the desired reaction, that wouldn’t be surprising considering how closely he analyzed everything around him. 

“Can I show you something?” The question has you looking up from your obnoxious yellow golf ball to see him approach when you nod. “Your grip on the club is weird and I’ve noticed that your swing is weak, that’s why your shots never go where you want them to and go about two feet at a time.”

He’s standing behind you before you have a chance to overthink it, the warmth of his body at your back as he leans over you. Large hands carefully adjust yours on the grip of the club, the earthy smell of his cologne mixed with the constant smell of smoke washing over you like a forest fire.

“They go more than just two feet,” you defend, earning a breathy chuckle in your ear.

“Yeah, sometimes they go three,” he teases, his hands settling over yours as he steps closer. “It’s okay to smack the shit outta the ball. It’s not like you’ve got pro hero strength.”

“No, but with my luck it’d go flying and I’d hit someone with the ball.” 

“Yeah, that’s fair.” His arms start to swing with yours, getting into a steady rhythm with you as you try to focus on what he was saying. “Let’s hit the ball now, yeah?”

He moves with you as you step forward to line up with the ball, and again his arms move with yours to hit the ball with just enough force to actually send it towards the hole. 

“Look at that, at least four feet now.”

“You’re so mean.” You’re pouting as he steps away from you, instantly feeling the colder air against your back without his warmth blocking it out. He only smirks while picking up his beer from the ledge, leaving you to pick up your own drink as you lean against the ledge to watch him take his shot. “Dare you to hit yours one handed.”

“You think I can’t?”

“I’m sure you can, but can you hit it well?”

His response to the challenge is to line up the shot, then start to drink from his cup while swinging the putter - and you watch in amazement as the ball not only goes straight, but knocks into your ball to send it a few feet forward.  

“I hate you.”

“Nah, you think I’m hot.” The correction has your cheeks flushing, because yeah of course you did but so did half of the country. The number one hero was incredibly hot - and not just where his quirk was involved. “Don’t you, sweetheart?”

“Yeah, maybe.” 

Because he was, and the fact that he was interested in you was insane to think about. He was a pro hero, deeply committed to another pro hero, and he wanted to go out on dates with you. Sure, you were dating his boyfriend, but you were just a reporter - no quirk, just a pretty face that looked wonderful on television and some critical views on hero work. You still wondered how you had managed to pull Eijirou, your beloved chivalrous hero, when you had zero charm and minimal patience after he’d spilled coffee on you. 

“I think you’re pretty hot, too,” he comments as you walk towards your balls for your next shots, something that had your cheeks warm as you nudge him with your elbow. “Beautiful in general; but how smart and patient you are, combined with how much you care is pretty hot.”

“My insides are sexy?”

“Yeah.” His confirmation makes you smile, only for you to laugh when he realizes what you said and looks over to you with a blush. “Wait, not like that. Like your personality insides, not your organs.”
