people can design dungeons however they like because they're pretend. because it's pretend, i have no doubt that a wheelchair enthusiast could write an equivalent essay to what you wrote describing why wheelchairs are zesty and fun: a party has to consider some special features of one chatacter, dungeons are designed by the DM to take one player's interests into account, the chair would lead to interesting choices that matter being introduced into play (do you leave purplewheels the elf behind? who stays with her? what do they do without her purple orb spinning abilities?). the artificiality of the 10' corridor "dungeon" and people having to play along with the campness (CUBES) has been a "core d+d theme" since the Seventies.

I don't rightly understand why this character of someone who is trying to popularise putting their special interest into dungeons raises such feeling. do you have any examples of *actual people* trying to impose themselves on you and if you do, what power do they have over you other than that which you are giving them yourself? It sounds so paranoid: They are Demanding that We make The Dungeons Wheelchair Accessible.

any concept of s "core fantasy grammar" is a very strong one - since it is perforce a claim about the public doctrine and deep structure of desire, form, and behaviour that anyone MUST cultivate and develop to be a "fantasist" - and I think @samueldays is covering an awareness that his arguments are too weak to actually address this with aggressive barking and verbal abuse.

I do not know what an "Academie Fantastique" writing a "core fantasy grammar" would look like. I doubt anything like it could exist because the imagination is not so easily policed absent some giant IP-squatting behemoth like the Roman Catholic Church (which, admittedly, is an aspirational goal for WB et al.) I have never seen anything like a "core fantasy grammar" presented that is not at bottom a description of what kinds of stories the fanboy likes best and wants people to produce more content for him to consume, because it is a waste for talented authors to produce works for other people.

As I have written in a previous post, the introduction of 20th century bits of business into "fantasy tales" began in 1900. If you exclude these works from 'core fantasy', as you do when you make 'core fantasy' restrictive (no aluminium please) rather than inclusive (it's got to have elves in)', then 'core fantasy' is looking more like a ghetto within a ghetto and should perhaps be renamed something like 'post-post-post-Tolkien Old-Wave Rural Murderhobocore Fantasy' at, perhaps, the cost of a hurt ego in which one can no longer imagine oneself at the blazing heart of Imagination Itself.

Re: Fantasy elf wheelchair discourse:

Problem isn't writing a dungeon module with a wheelchair-accessible dungeon (though shouldn't it be a four-legged magic wheelchair construct instead?), you can give the excuse that the dungeon was designed for rolling constructs or something. Problem is trying to get moral leverage for being the guy that provided the wheelchair accessible dungeon module.

"Unlike you pathetic gamers, I actually care about disabled people," that sort of moral entrepreneurship is really obnoxious and people don't want to deal with it.
