The Triple Goddess Trope
Like Wicca, the Triple Goddess can take many forms, but it typically boils down to the tropes of the maiden, the mother, and the crone. In The Summoning, the characters can be said to each represent a different aspect of the Triple Goddess: Lily the maiden, Morgan the mother, and Circe the crone. These tropes can also represent both the phases of the moon cycle and phases of the female life cycle.
The Triple Goddess is often represented by various combinations of Greek, Roman, and other goddesses/deities. In The Summoning, the crone is represented as Hecate and is invoked in Circe’s spell in several forms:
Virgo, mater, et anus, deam parte tribus, domina maleficos, primus Adam uxorem, malifica Morgaine, de lamia Aeaea, ululatus canis Hecate, vocavit Trivia, vocavit Chthonia, vocavit Ereshkigal, tria Dianae, nos vocare tribus in vas purissimum, venite ad nos, in hoc vas huius pura et munda corpus, adhaerē animam hanc virginem, descende ad nos, exaudi invocationem!
This roughly translates to the following (more official translation coming soon from a Latin teacher friend):
Maiden, mother, and crone, three part goddess, mistress of spirits, first wife of Adam, the witch Morgaine, the sorceress of Aeaea, dog-howling Hecate, called Trivia, called Chthonia, called Ereshkigal, tripled Diana, we three call you into this most pure vessel, come to us, in this pure and unsullied body, cleave to the soul of this maiden, descend to us, hear my invocation!
Morgaine, the sorceress of Aeaea, Trivia, Chthonia, and Ereshkigal are all different versions of Hecate or Hecate-like figures. Morgaine is the witch from the King Arthur legend; the sorceress of Aeaea is actually named Circe; Trivia is the Roman goddess version of Hecate; Chthonia is an epithet for many crone-type goddesses; and Ereshkigal is the Mesopotamian goddess of the underworld.
The names invoked in the incantation in the play also reference Lily, Morgan, and Circe’s namesakes (Circe’s being mentioned in the previous paragraph):
”primus Adam uxorem” = Lilith, the first wife of Adam / Lily
”malifica Morgaine” = the witch Morgaine / Morgan
”de lamia Aeaea” = the sorceress of Aeaea / Circe
The Maiden aspect of the Triple Goddess is often represented as Artemis, the virgin goddess of the hunt. She is a moon goddess, fitting with the Triple Goddess metaphor of the moon cycle. Her Roman equivalent is Diana, which I include here solely because of Wonder Woman.
The Mother aspect of the Triple Goddess, if sticking to the moon goddesses, is often represented as Selene, the personification of the moon itself. Together with Artemis and Hecate, they are the main lunar goddesses of Greek mythology.
