 Dear Staff:

 Well, it was not too bad of a weekend weather-wise.  With my brackets busted a week ago, I did send some time watching the games, but also tried to get outside to enjoy the spotty sunshine.  I hope everyone was able to decompress a little in preparation for the push before April vacation.

I know over the next several weeks, SBAC and SAT testing will occur across the district.  I want to thank staff for their help in trying to make this experience as stress-free for students as possible.  We must remember that these are just one small sample of what our students know and are able to do.  They do not paint a complete picture of their hard work and that of their teachers.  Please know that we appreciate all that you do in preparing and administering these assessments..  

I would like to congratulate the following students for their recent success at the State HOSA Conference.  HOSA is an organization that strives to foster the leadership and understanding for future health professionals.

Two Wallingford medical careers students were recognized for their work:

·      Isabella Beauchamp (Lyman Hall High School) earned First Place for Medical Photography

·      Hannah Yother (Sheehan High School) earned Third Place for Medical Terminology

Congratulations to the students and the staff on their success!  

On Saturday, 25 students participated in the Regional Invention Convention Competition.  From that 25, 19 now are slated to move the State Competition at Gampel Pavilion at the University of Connecticut at the end of April. Congratulations to all the student participants.  We are very proud of your accomplishments!

I want to bring to your attention a talk that will be held at the Wallingford Public Library on Monday, April 17.  Dr. Ron Beghetto, UCONN Professor, will speak about creativity in the classroom.  The Neag School of Education at UConn, the Meriden Chapter of the American Association for University Women (AAUW), and the Wallingford Public Library are hosts of this event.

Community

I would like to thank all of staff and community members who participated in the Third Annual Special Education Resource Fair on Thursday evening at Zandri’s Stillwood Inn.  There were over fifty in-district and community vendors who shared information regarding the services that each provide to students with disabilities from the ages of three through adulthood.

I would like to thank the PPS Department groups who also had tables to share the services they provided to students with disabilities and their families.  Lastly, I would like to thank the PPS PTAC members and the entire PPS Department office team for making this event such a success.

Courage

On Thursday evening there was a meeting held at SCOW for families who are immigrants to the United States.  The meeting focused on trying to assist them in understanding their rights and also the steps they should take in this time of immigration change.  I want to thank all of the staff who attended to show support for the students and families in our community.  

No matter your political stance, we have a responsibility to the children of these families.  It is not an easy time for them, and we will continue to support them.  If you have any questions about what we are doing to assist our EL and bilingual students and families, please feel free to contact me.
