Sorry for the lack of content for the past few weeks! I kept putting off posting, but now I am back!
Since the last update I have:
Participated in Teachers’ Day
Traveled to Amritsar and the Wagha Border
Ran a Half-Marathon
Explored Delhi more with friends
1.) Teachers’ Day- A national holiday in India that celebrates the contributes of teachers to society. It is celebrated on September 5th every year, which is the birthday of India’s second president Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, a celebrated teacher himself. On this day, there are celebrations and senior students take over teaching duties for all classes for the day. At Bluebells, this day consists of an assembly to recognize teachers and their achievements, a performance of dance, theatre, and music for the students, and finally another assembly and dinner in the evening for teachers’ families. I was part of the orchestra that played a rendition of Soul Sacrifice by Santana, contributing by playing the congas (I am still working on acquiring a video). The first two photos are from our evening performance (1. the whole band 2. My contact and advisor at the school Ms. Preeti Puri and I)
2. Amritsar- Following Teachers’ Day I traveled to Amritsar in the state of Punjab. Amritsar is home to the most famous Sikh temple (The Golden Temple) as well as the capital of Punjab. I had the opportunity to visit the Golden Temple late at night and it was truly a beautiful sight (there were signs requesting that visitors don’t take photos but here is a link to the Wikipedia page ). I also learned a lot more about Sikhism and the history of this temple from the various pilgrims all around the temple who were eager to teach me about their faith and history. The following morning I went to one of the other highlights of Amritsar: the Partition Museum. This museum documents the build-up, events during, and aftermath of Partition. The combination of personal artifacts, historical documents, photos, and videos was extremely well put together and immensely informative. I would highly recommend this museum to anyone who is traveling in India because it gives such a great account of such a violent and influential period of Indian and Pakistani history that greatly influences the relations of these two countries today from culture to politics.
3. Wagha Border- After learning about Partition and the basis for the tensions between India and Pakistan I got to witness this first hand at the Wagha border. Here at this very small stretch of border India and Pakistan put on a daily theatrical military show of force and national fervor. I have never seen anything like it; it was terrifying, humorous, and captivating all at the same time. Vox Borders does a really good feature on this that I highly recommend (link here). In the third photo above, you can see an example of the theatrical high kick performance by both the Indian and Pakistani border guards.
4. Half-Marathon- As a result of my frustrations around finding ways to be active in an unfamiliar and chaotic megacity, I decided to register for a half-marathon here in Delhi. As I trained for weeks at the crack of dawn running laps of my small neighborhood park in the still blistering heat, I often questioned my decision. However, when the race actually came last week I was really happy I decided to enter. I finished sub-2hrs despite crashing around 12-13km and overall enjoyed the experience despite what my face may say in the above photo. I still prefer bikes to running, but in a bind, I am glad that I can run to be active.
5. Friends in Delhi- Over the past month or so I have developed a network of primarily ex-pat friends here in Delhi. This has provided a nice social outlet forcing me to leave my rooftop suite (I live on the roof of the school haha). We have explored the food scene around Delhi, gone bouldering, and just hung out. Many of them work in the development sector, which has given me exposure to a field I didn’t really know much about before this. I even went to one of my friend’s presentations about rural sanitation (latrines) this week. It is an interesting position to be the outsider amongst this group, given that I do not really know where I stand with regards to my viewpoint on international development, particularly economic development. But my friend Andres (above) has been happy to engage in these type of discussions with me!
Life at school has been pretty slow the past two weeks because high school students have been taking mid-term exams and not attending classes because of this. However, my 8th-grade classes have been making laudable progress on their climate change projects so I am excited to see their presentations in a few weeks.
Next weekend I am going on a 6-day school trip to Ahmedabad and other areas in Gujarat; I am excited to see a new area and one that is not often frequented by foreign tourists. After that, I am heading to the mountains for some fresh air and mountain biking (one of the things I have been missing the most recently).
Other than that, the lack of class time has given me free time to think about the end of my time here, my return to the US, Fulbright, and post-Fulbright; this has produced many ideas and thoughts which I am eager to keep exploring and thinking about.
I have also been able to connect a bit with friends in the US, who I have been missing lately, and I would love to hear from more friends, so feel free to reach out :) I miss Maine and Lewiston, particularly now during my favorite time of the year to be in Maine, but I hope to make it north during my two months back in the US before I leave for Malaysia!
Okay, this has been long and rambly so I am cutting it off! I will try and be more punctual with the next post to keep it shorter! Off to play some pick-up soccer!
Much love,
Zack

*Why Don't We Remember Being Babies?*
Virtually nobody has memories from very early childhood because at that age, our brains don't yet function in a way that bundles information into the complex neural patterns that we know as memories. This is called "semantic memory
Until sometime between the ages two and four, try you however, children lack "episodic memory" -- memory regarding the details of a specific event. Such memories are stored in several parts of the brain's surface, or "cortex." For example, memory of sound is processed in the auditory cortexes, on the sides of the brain, while visual memory is managed by the visual cortex, at the back. A region of the brain called the hippocampus ties all the scattered pieces together. The hippocampus, tucked very neatly in the middle of our brain, is responsible for pulling those all together and tying them. At the age of seven, children could still recall more than 60% of the recorded events, but children who were just a year older remembered only about 40 %
The reason we don’t remember being babies is because infants and toddlers don’t have a fully developed memory. But babies as young as six months can form both short-term memories that last for minutes, and long-term memories that last weeks.

*How the Telephone Works.*☎️📞
When a person speaks into a telephone, the sound waves created by his voice enter the mouthpiece. An electric current carries the sound to the telephone of the person he is talking to. ... When a person talks into the telephone, the sound waves strike the diaphragm and make it vibrate.
When two telephones are connected, analog voice data is transmitted over the copper wires of the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network). The voice data is then converted into electrical signals which are eventually routed in the switching centers. Finally, a connection is made and communication is possible.
The number dialled on a landline is routed via the telephone wire to the Electric cross connect system at the local telephone exchange. This system has a direct mapping for the number dialled to the location of the called person. It simply switches the call to subsequent cross connects till the destination is reached.
Something that converts energy from one form to another is called a *transducer* . The loudspeaker in a phone works in the opposite way: it takes an incoming electrical current and uses magnetism to convert the electrical energy back into sound energy you can hear.

*NARASIMHA* Avatar, Lord Vishnu incarnates himself as a semi-man, semi-lion in this world. The king of demons (asuras), Hiranyakasyapa, wanted to become immortal and wanted to remain young forever. To this end, he meditated for Lord Brahma and because of his severe penance, the gods were frightened and asked Brahma to pacify the king. Brahma was impressed by his austerity and granted him a wish. HiranyaKasyapa wished that he be neither killed by a man or beast, nor in daylight or at night and neither inside or outside a building. Having obtained the wish he considered himself the supreme God and frobade all worship of gods by anyone.
But his son Prahlada, was an ardent devotee of Vishnu. This enraged Hiranyakasyapa very much. He ordered numerous ways to kill Prahlada including asking his sister Holika to sit with Prahlada in the fire. But everytime Prahlada escaped unhurt. Enraged, once he asked Prahlad to show him the Lord Vishnu. Prahlad said, "He is everywhere". Further enraged, Hiranyakasyapa knocked down a pillar, and asked if Lord was present there. Lord Vishnu then emerged as a half lion, half man from the pillar which was neither inside the house nor outside, and the time was evening, neither night nor day. He then killed Hiranyakasyapa thus saving the life of his devotee Prahlada.

Chapter 1 Challenges of Nation Building
TEXTBOOK QUESTIONS SOLVED : Q 1. Which among the following statements about the partition is incorrect? (a) Partition of India was the outcome of the “two-nation theory”. (b) Punjab and Bengal were the two provinces divided on the basis of religion. (c) East Pakistan and West Pakistan were not contiguous. (d) The scheme of Partition included a plan for transfer of population across the border.
Answer: (d) The scheme of partition included a plan for transfer of population across the border. Q 2. Match the principles with instances:
Answer: (a)-(ii), (b)-(iv), (c)-(i), (d)-(iii) Q 3. Take a current political map of India (showing outlines of states) and mark the location of the following Princely States, (a) Junagadh (b) Manipur (c) Mysore (d) Gwalior.
Answer: Please see the Map attached at the end of the chapter. The places are marked as 3(a), 3(b), 3(c) and 3(d). Q 4. Here are two opinions: Bismay: “The merger with the Indian State was an extension of democracy to the people of the Princely States.” Inderpreet: “I am not so sure, there was force being used. Democracy comes by creating consensus. ” What is your opinion in the light of accession of Princely States and the responses of the people in these parts?
Answer: Accession of Princely States and merger with Indian union was to expand democracy all over the country because princely states never enjoyed their political rights. Indian government central government used force to extend democracy to some extent as this was mandatory to have a uniform base in the country. Q 5. Read the following very different statements made in August 1947: “Today you have worn on your heads a crown of thorns. The seat of power is a nasty thing. You have to remain ever wakeful on that seat… you have to he more humble and forbearing… now there will be no end to your being tested. ” -M.K, Gandhi “India will awake to a life of freedom…. we step out from, the old to the new…. we end, today a period of ill fortune and India discovers herself again. The achievement we celebrate today is but a step, an opening of opportunity …”, -Jawaharlal Nehru Spell out the agenda of nation building that flows from these two statements. Which one appeals more to you and why?
Answer: These two statements focus on the agenda of secularism, democracy, sovereignty and freedom. It focuses on the path which will lead to the real development and prosperity of our country. The first statement appeals to me more than the second one because it invokes the countrymen to remain awake, alert and conscious as it is not the end of our struggle. The time to build the nation initiates now. Q 6. What are the reasons being used by Nehru for keeping India secular? Do you think these reasons were only ethical and sentimental? Or were there some prudential reasons as well?
Answer: Reasons for keeping India secular: 1. All the Muslims did not leave India during participation, some muslims stayed in India as a minority and Jawaharlal Nehru wanted to deal with them in a very civilised and dignified manner. 2. He advocated security and democratic rights of Muslims as a citizen of India. No, these reasons were not only ethical and sentimental, but there were some prudential reasons also as: 1. India’s secular nature cherished its long term goals and principles like socialism, equality, liberty and fraternity. 2. Secularism stops any single faith to become superior and inferior to those who practicised another religion. Hence it considers all citizens equal irrespective of religious affiliation.
Q 7. Bring out two major differences between the challenge of nation building for eastern and western regions of the country at the time of Independence.
Answer: The two major differences between eastern (Bengal) and Western (Punjab) regions can be summed up as follows: 1. These regions were the muslim majority provinces to be joined. Hence, it was decided that new country Pakistan will comprise two territories i.e. West and East Pakistan. 2. Secondly, there was a problem of minorities on both sides of border (East and West). Lakhs of Hindus and Sikhs in areas of Pakistan and Muslims on the Indian side of Punjab and Bengal found themselves trapped with no option except to leave their homes. Q 8. What was the task of the States Reorganisation Commission? What was its most salient recommendation?
Answer: The State Reorganisation Commission was set up in 1953 by central government to look into the matter of redrawing of boundaries of state: 1. The commission evolved that states’ boundaries should reflect the boundaries of different languages to accommodate linguistic diversity. 2. The State Reorganisation Act was passed in 1956 which resulted the creation of 14 states and 6 union territories. 3. Its most salient recommendation was the formation of linguistic states i.e. to reorganise states on the basis of accommodation of their languages to prepare a uniform base for the nation. Q 9. It is said that the nation is to large extent an “imagined community” held together by common beliefs, history, political aspirations and imaginations. Identify the features that make India a nation.
Answer: India proved herself through all stages of three challenges at the time of nation building like: 1. India is a secular country where people speak different languages and follow different cultures and religions to be recognised as a nation of unity in diversity with common faith and beliefs. 2. Political aspiration ensures demo¬cratic setup based on parliamentary form of government creating political competition in a democratic framework. 3. India’s imaginations established a welfare state on the principle of equality and special protection to socially disadvantaged groups and religions as well as cultural communities. Q 10. Read the following passage and answer the questions below: “In the history of nation-building only the Soviet experiment bears comparison with the Indian. There too, a sense of unity had to be forged between many diverse ethnic groups, religious, linguistic communities and social classes. The scale-geographic as well as demographic was comparably massive. The raw material the state had to work with was equally unpropitious: a people divided by faith and driven by debt and disease.” —Ramachandra Guha (a) List the commonalities that the author mentions between India and Soviet Union and give one example for each of these from India. (b) The author does not talk about dissimilarities between the two experiments. Can you mention two dissimilarities? (c) In retrospect which of these two experiments worked better and why?
Answer: (a) Commonalities between India and Soviet Union: (i) Both the nations shaped the nation on linguistic basis. (ii) To promote welfare motives, the economic and technological developments took place in India also. (iii) States were divided on the grounds of geographical boundary and strength of populations also in both the nations. (b) Dissimilarities: (i) Soviet Union was divided into 15 independent republics/countries to be disintegrated.
