headcanon: solo career (2019)
word count: 1,342 words
esquire korea cover
ash’s second magazine cover plays off of the romantic image of his last album, daydream.
it is another men’s magazine, which doesn’t make sense to ash since men have never really been his strongest demographic, but if he is getting covers, it means dimensions will continuing to support his solo career, so he isn’t going to complain.
ash’s interview for this shoot is one of his more referenced ones among fans. he’s known for being pretty quiet and reserved, but in this interview, he’s more forward on his thoughts than his fans are used to. it generally earns positive reactions and signals the beginning of ash really stepping into adulthood in the public eye, something he’d been trying to do for two years at this point.
kolon sport
ash is signed as a brand ambassador for kolon sport not long after polaris leaves their years-long deal with puma behind.
in his role, he films a cf music video of a song, as is befitting of his image at this point. in his role as brand ambassador, he promotes the brand as a part of their campaign to bring awareness to an endangered flower on jeju island.
the deal isn’t a major mark in ash’s career, but it manages to establish a stronger brand presence for him, build a “cool” image, and reinforce his sensitive and aware branding.
taeyong 1st solo concert: unreality
ash’s first solo concert plays with themes of reality vs. unreality and day vs. night based on the concepts of his first two solo albums.
holding a solo concert proves that he has established a strong and loyal fanbase of his own that will show out to watch him. this has already been proven enough through sales to warrant the solo concert in the first place, but holding a solo concert is no small deal.
ash performs his original songs as well as a few covers.
chemistry
after two years, the duo from “trouble maker” finally make their return with a mini-album. with ash now into his twenties, chemistry ramps up the heat from the duo’s debut as a collaborative pair. gone are the days of cheeky troublemaking, and now enter songs with a hearty mix of both playfulness and boundary-pushing sexiness.
promoted single “now” see the pair showing off their chemistry more than ever and from implied threesomes to car make-outs to violence, the music video for “now” all but prides itself on painting as ash in the light of everything he isn’t supposed to be as an idol (and an innocent maknae). any worries that a sequel to “trouble maker” might drag him back firmly into being viewed as a pretty boy idol are assuaged by the un-idol-like light the mini-album casts him in and ash earns another chart topper to show for it.
ash is creatively involved in three of the six tracks, and though it’s a downgrade from his usual of being involved in every song on his solo albums, he is truthfully just more creatively invested in other projects at the time. he is more involved in the title track, “now”, this time around than he had been with “trouble maker” and the other two songs he helps create, “eleven” and “f.w.b”, preview the style he’ll grow into for his next solo album.
taeyong 2019 asia fanmeeting: a midsummer night’s dream
pretty much the same thing as his solo concert, only this plays off and shows demand for him not only in south korea, but across (east) asia.
the dates are arranged to take place right before polaris took off on their love yourself world tour so that the dates won’t overlap.
puma
ash goes back to promoting puma, this time as a solo face instead of with his group.
they use a similar strategy to kolon sport by having ash release a music video as a cf, “run the streets”.
the vibes of his next solo era are starting to leak into his solo activities at this point. his image has moved on from a romantic boyfriend to a more cool, artistic, and “authentic”.
“nappa”
ash hasn’t released an actual solo song since the previous november when he drops a new solo single in fall via portal. the song signals a different tone from daydream. if daydream unveiled his romantic fantasies, “nappa” is a harsh pull down to reality about his imperfections as a lover.
the music video holds over some of the eccentricity of the video for “the song” in a more down-to-earth way as he dines and dashes and throws up children’s toys. in interviews about the song, ash explains the music video represents immaturity in love.
between “now” and “nappa”, any (left over) built up ideals of a perfect romantic boyfriend are done away with in preparation for his next era.
1st look spread
another photo shoot and it’s once again used as a tool to shape his image.
ash embodies a james dean-like persona for the shoot, which is an association that will continue to be pushed with him over time.
calypso “gun” mv
ash plays the male lead in calypso’s comeback music video after a year and a half of no new releases.
he’d always felt an obligation to support calypso as his seniors and he’d written their single preceding this one, so when the offer is extended to him, he takes it despite his awareness of his rather unimpressive acting chops.
luckily, he mostly just has to keep one expression the whole time. his role is meant more to draw in his fans to check out calypso than showcase any real emotional depth, which is probably for the best.
fatalism
fatalism comes in as a loud contrast to his sophomore release. gone are daydreams of what ifs, and in enter the bleary reality of doomed love.
the album itself starts out as one might expect from an album preceded by chemistry and daydream. the sensual romanticism sits just between the two, but as the track list progresses, the cracks in the ash’s love story seep in in willingness to give too much of himself away to please his lover (“control me”) and insecurity and dissatisfaction (“the bad guys”). these flaws lead to a break-up (“make up”, “where do we go from here”) that places ash center stage in boiling envy and stinging heartbreak that leaves him empty (“d (half moon)”, “wine”) before he falls back to the start of the doomed cycle again (“bittersweet”, “circles”) by the album’s close.
the album’s visual this time reflects the more outwardly angst-ridden character seen in the album’s lyrics and story, with an emphasis placed on emptiness and distance. “i love it” is represented through a visual starring shots of ash and a model, but even then the video features each alone in empty rooms. “control me” places ash in a white void all alone and in “make up”, days pass by as ash lays regretfully in his room. “where do we go from here” once again sees ash and his love interest juxtaposed but crossing paths only to face opposite directions. “d (half moon)” places ash alone in the city or seemingly invisible to his love, signaling the isolation and helplessness, while “bittersweet” visualizes despondence and surrender to fate.
ash cites the greek myths of orpheus and eurydice and sisyphus as inspirations for the album.
fatalism’s negative emotions find themselves explained best in the album’s singles. “d (half moon)” serves as the pre-release, a crooning heartbreak ballad about being half-full without one’s love. the album’s promoted single, “bittersweet”, highlights his bitterness by explaining his sorrow and how he falls back into a helpless cycle of lust, love, and heartbreak.
the album concludes promotions without earning him another number one, which some take as a sign of fans’ waning happiness with him as he pushes the edges of his idol box in both his personal life and art.
he promotes on sketchbook for the album again, a promotional schedule he lobbied for this time after a good first experience.
