#Repost @museum44 ・・・ Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X were never close, they did work together in 1962; that was one year before Malcolm X left the Nation of Islam. The occasion was Local 1199's 56-day strike of low-paid black and Hispanic hospital workers for union recognition at what is now Brookdale Medical Center in New York City. It was the only time Malcolm X identified himself with a labor union. Leon Davis, founder and for 50 years president of Local 1199, had served a 30-day jail term for refusing to call off the strike and was now facing a six-month sentence. Malcolm X was among a group of civil rights and labor leaders called together by A. Philip Randolph to address a strike-support rally on West 72d Street. Joining them as sponsors of the rally were Dr. King, who regarded 1199 as his favorite union, Roy Wilkins of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Bayard Rustin, Harry Van Arsdale Jr., New York City Labor Council president, and the veteran socialist Norman Thomas. They spoke against a giant backdrop reading "Negro and Puerto Rican Communities Support 1199's Fight for Union Rights for Hospital Workers." At the last moment Dr. King was called to a civil rights demonstration in Albany, Ga., and sent a taped message to the rally. If he had been present, it would have been the only time he and Malcolm X shared the same platform. MOE FONER Exec. Director, Bread and Roses Cultural Project, Local 1199 New York, Nov. 27, 1992 ‪ #BlackLaborHistory #Labor #APRPPMUSEUM #APhilipRandolph #PullmanPorterMuseum #Museum44 (at A Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum)

#Repost @aprpullmanportermuseum ・・・ The 3rd installment of our #ReCyclingHistory Workshop series was a complete success. Our first 4 workshops are strategically focused on setting the foundation and putting into context the historical significance of the series. They also focus on the historical significance of The African American Presence in the South Lake Front Region and Millennium Reserve. At our foundation we are focused on strong partnership building, collaborations and identifying the resources in the region available to help us implement the plan. We are proud and excited to have some strong partners who represents large organizations, groups and youth. #StayTuned for the 4th workshop coming next month that will be the beginning of our detailed outreach and implementation strategy. #TheMovementMovesOn #CulturalEconomicDevelopment #CulturalPolicy #InterGenerationalExchange #International #Tourism #TheGreatMigration #Centennial #Bronzeville #SouthLakeFrontRegion #MillenniumReserve #APhilipRandolph #PullmanPorterMuseum #PullmanNationalMonument Cc: @greatmigrationcentennial @museum44 @slowrollchicago @fieldmuseum @shellyjeansvintagebrand @wearemural @trailsforillinois @ypgroup_chi @centsofchange (at Bronzeville Visitor Information Center)

#Repost @museum44 ・・・ Executive Order 9981 was issued on July 26, 1948 by President Harry Truman. It "abolished" racial discrimination in the United States Armed Forces and eventually led to the end of segregation in the services. Not surprisingly, many commanders (including Gen. Douglas MacArthur) ignored this presidential order. Thurgood Marshall (Chief Legal Counsel for the NAACP) traveled to Japan on January 14, 1951 to discuss dozens of civil rights violations (continuation of segregation, disproportionate arrests of African-American soldiers, false imprisonments, unconstitutional military trials, trumped up charges, poor treatment, etc.) with Supreme Commander Douglas MacArthur. #VeteransDay #APhilipRandolph #PullmanPorterMuseum #PullmanNationalMonument #BlackLaborHistory #BlackHistory365 #Museum44 (at A Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum)

#Repost @museum44 ・・・ Today as we celebrate Veterans Day we remember the most important day in American history for Afrian Americans in the Armed Forces. Executive Order 8802 was signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on June 25, 1941, to prohibit racial discrimination in the national defense industry. It was the first federal action, though not a law, to promote equal opportunity and prohibit employment discrimination in the United States. The President's statement that accompanied the Order cited the war effort, saying that "the democratic way of life within the nation can be defended successfully only with the help and support of all groups," and cited reports of discrimination The executive order was issued in response to pressure from civil rights activists A. Philip Randolph, Walter White, and others involved in the March on Washington Movement who had planned a march on Washington, D.C. to protest racial discrimination. The march was suspended after Executive Order 8802 was issued. The Order established the President's Committee on Fair Employment Practice within the Office of Production Management to investigate alleged violations and "to take appropriate steps to redress grievances which it finds to be valid." The Committee was also supposed to make recommendations to federal agencies and to the President on how Executive Order 8802 could be made most effective. Following the end of World War II, the Committee was terminated by statute on July 17, 1945. #VeteransDay #APhilipRandolph #PullmanPorterMuseum #PullmanNationalMonument #BlackLaborHistory #BlackHistory365 #ExecutiveOrder8802 (at A Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum)
