*: this of course both applies in reverse and depends on how much energy Dew has - making a feather weigh 100g takes a lot less efforts than making a massive sheet of glass malleable, for example - alongside being used differently by different magic users. Dew specifically likes messing around with elasticity, which is what he did with the floor so Rowan didn't get a concussion, but it really differs from user to user, and is not a popular form of magic so research on it isn't the most thorough

Foggy Glasses and Corroded Copper: Rowan's Birthday- part 2

    Rowan was having a bit of a nice day. It was his birthday, so while not obligatory, he really wanted it to go well. He woke up on time, the train was empty enough that he could get himself a seat at the window, and his first class, Linear Algebra, went remarkably well, with him being able to write down all necessary notes with no issues! After the class was over, Rowan, as usual, went to the common room, both to find his classmates and to sort out his material for the next class.

    "Rowan, you're here!" Dew shouted, Rowan barely being able to react as they seemingly sprinted towards him and gave him a mix of a body slam and hug. He must have overestimated Rowan's strength, because Rowan quickly lost his footing, falling over with Dew on top of him. He hit the floor, but, weirdly enough, it felt... soft?

    Dew chuckled. "Did that scare you?" They said, still on top of Rowan. Their hand rested on the back of his head, as if to protect them - Rowan assumed it to be a secondary measure  though, considering they'd softened the floor already.

    "It did, a little bit." Rowan said, still stunned, but also feeling a tad embarassed by the sudden proximity to Dew's body.

    Dew quickly stood back up and pressed the tip of his shoe against the ground. A small burst of light emmited from it, and suddenly the stone  floor felt - appropriately - a lot harder.

    "Oh, sorry! I forgot to lift you up!" Dew said, extending his hand to Rowan.

    Rowan grabbed Dew's hand, his face still feeling warm from the sudden encounter, and stood up, shaking off a bit of dust that had gotten on him.

    "So, with that out of the way, Dew and I wanted to tell you something." Mist said, a slight smile visible on his face and his hands on his back.

    "Happy birthday! You're an adult now." Dew said, ruffling Rowan's hair. "You didn't give us much time, so we couldn't get you anything fancy, but we still wanted to make you something, so I made us a batch of cupcakes!" Dew concluded, pointing his finger towards Mist, who revealed he was holding one of the aforementioned cupcakes on his hand.

    "Here," Mist said, giving Rowan a small yellow cupcake with slightly messy chocolate icing on top, "you said a while ago that your favorite cake flavor is carrot, so I told Dew to make carrot cupcakes. They ended up with some ingredients left over, but I doubt that will be an issue for them."

    Rowan took the cupcake from Mist's hand and examined it more closely. The cupcake smelled quite similar to his father's baking, even the icing had a very similar consistency to how he made carrot cakes, though this one seemed quite a bit sweeter.

    "Thank you so much, you guys, I really appreciate this!" Rowan said with a wide smile.

    Rowan, Dew and Mist were chatting until their next class - the teacher missed a train, and was going to take a bit to get to the KIT, so they had some extra time to hang out before it began. For now, they were mostly talking about assignments, eating the birthday cupcakes, and just talking about their personal hobbies.

    "So yeah, the garden is going well!" Rowan said, a big smile on his face.

    "Speaking of gardening, there's sometbing I want to give you." Mist said  turning to his backpack and taking a small white box with a blue bow wrapped around it. He turned to Rowan and handed it to him. "Happy birthday! I didn't have much time, so this is the best I could do, but I hope you like it!"

    Rowan, speechless, took the box from Mist, removed the bow and opened it. Inside, there was a pair of gardening scissors, with a simple yet pretty design on the handle and which seemed to generally be of high quality - it was clearly a well-thought-out gift, which surprised Rowan given he didn't think he had mentioned his interests that often.

    "Thank you so much, Mist! This is amazing, I really like this!" Rowan said, clearly beaming.

    "Wait, what?" Said Dew, lifting their head from their hand to look at Mist. "How did you have time to buy that? And how did you know he'd like it?"

    "I passed by a store that sold gardening supplies on the way home and just asked for a good pair of scissors, easy as that." Mist said matter-of-factly, but with a slight smirk visible on his face. It was clear, to Rowan at least, that he was bragging about managing to get the gift in time. "And I knew he'd like it because he does mention gardening every so often, so even if this isn't useful immediately it will probably get some use later on."

    Dew just stared at Mist for a few seconds with a bewildered expression on his face, before furrowing their brows, closing their eyes and letting out a sigh.

    "I'm really sorry, Rowan, I didn't have enough time to get you a gift..." Dew said, once again letting his chin rest on his hand. "I know it's not the same, but is there something you need help with? I could lend you a hand if you want."

    "Don't worry about it, I really didn't give you two much time. Besides, you made the cupcakes already!" Rowan said, letting out a bit of a giggle.

    "You know that doesn’t count!" Dew responded, frowning a bit but staying still. "That was Mist's idea anyways... and Via's recipe." 

    "Alright then, if you insist..." Rowan took a moment to think. He really wanted help with driving, but his parents were always busy running the pharmacy - of course, he could wait until they were free, but Dew had mentioned enjoying driving before, so maybe that was worth a shot? "There is something you could help me with." Rowan said, adjusting his tie as he thought of how to explain what he wanted. "You see, I've been wanting to learn how to drive, but I don't really have anyone who could teach me available, so could you maybe help me with that? I know it's a big favor to ask, but-"

    "Sure, I'll do it!" Dew said, eyes lighting up as he got up from his seat and grabbed Rowan's hands. "what day works well for you? My schedule isn't exactly free but I can make room for this!"

    "Umm... I'm free on Sunday afternoons" Rowan responded, trying not to focus on how warm Dew's hands felt on his own

    "Sure, that's perfect! Sunday afternoons it is, then!" Dew concluded, letting go of Rowan's hands.

    They kept chatting for a few minutes, then went back to class, and finally had lunch. When Rowan went home, he could confidently state that his birthday had been a nice day.

Yk I'm actually starting to like how much DR makes Makoto seem bland - it feels to me like that's him selling himself short, for one, but also it makes his role as the Ultimate Hope that much more interesting, and that much more believable: his sense of self is not dependent on any talent of his, so while he's hit with grief as hard as everyone else, it's easier for him to hope for a better future without relying on The Thing He Can Do to get there (and that's what makes him beat Junko and recover the other students' hopes)

Hollow Knight's such an amazing game but there's one specific thing about it that I just cannot wrap my head around. What dictates completion rating, achievement collection and like actual tangible rewards?????

Colo3 is arguably the hardest thing in the base game (only surpassed by Radiance imo), and it gives no actual reward, just the achievement and 1% of completion. Okay. Makes sense. Serves as a fun challenge without forcing players that might not be too into the combat to do it for fear of missing out.

Path of Pain is the hardest platforming challenge in the whole game, so it gives no completion, no reward, and no achievement, just some bonus lore and a little token. Alright, fair, kinda makes sense even if I'm a bit bummed out that bragging about it is just like "look at this random Hunter's Journal entry I have"

AND THEN P5????? THE HARDEST THING IN THE WHOLE GAME GETS AN ACHIEVEMENT AND AN ENTIRE NEW ENDING???????

I was chatting abt Arcane with my sister and smth that's rlly neat is that Powder's instability isn't solely a result of her trauma or manipulation or anything like that - yeah, surely seeing the dead bodies of her friends and whatever Silco will do to her didn't help, but in episode 3 before the explosion (and apparently in the AU episode but idk I haven't reached it) she is having a full-on crisis after Vi told her to stay home (which was totally fair and reasonable). She was predisposed to those issues already, whether just because She's Like That or because she's breathing toxic chemicals 24/7, and ultimately she just needed a stable environment to grow up in. Unfortunately, Zaun is anything but stable.

Mist hair tie symbolism? I vaguely remember hair ties being mentioned but don't remember the post (I'll probably remember it completely if I find the post so I'll know what you mean then but I can't find it through Tumblr search because Tumblr search esp on mobile is a dumpster fire mascaurading as a fireworks show)

Also there's rambling involved? Then I MUST hear

I don't *think* I've laid it out explicitly yet, but basically:

Mist's hair can't be too long without being tied, because that's a safety hazard

He would prefer to have it short, but he doesn't have the time to go get a haircut, so he just keeps it in a bun

As time goes on, and as he allows himself less and less time for rest, his hair gets so tangled that he physically cannot remove his hair tie

At a later point in the story, he, after actual physical pain, manages to either cut or at least untie his hair (haven't fully decided on which it is)

So that's the literal way the events go, but imo this is just a bit of a synopsis of Mist's character: he's so wrapped up in the concept of being perfect 100% of the time, and always giving it his all, and always working, that he has no time for self-care, and actually resting becomes difficult, if not straight-up painful for him. Only through being forcibly removed from his work and being told to rest by several different people can he slowly and painstakingly untangle the mess he created for himself, but it's only so painful because he didn't do so earlier.

After his character arc, I think he still has his hair on a bun when he's Doing Lab Stuff, but I also think he lets his hair down most of the time outside of it, he lets himself not be in Work Mode at least for some time

This is also contrasted with Spark, who has similarly long hair, but they instead always have it down because they can't care about the same regulations Mist is obsessed with (and later on they learn to tie their hair sometimes because they start to be more strict with themself)

Oooooooh YES I want the ramble about the color choices in Little Mist Perfect!!! Ramble away!! Please!!!

ALRIGHT SO

In Little Mist Perfect, I used the background colors for two purposes - character relations and setting the mood. In one case, at the same time.

For light blue, yellow, orange and turquoise, I'm using them to tie the panels to Mist and Spark. Notably, Mist's main color is blue and Spark's main color is orange, so the analogous colors they share are "switched" in their relevance. I use this to show the state of the relationship between the two. For example, in this one:

Turquoise is paired with blue in the upper part and orange is paired with yellow on the lower part. This is the part of the story where the two are closest, everything is going well and there aren't really any issues

On these two pages, on the other hand, everything is going wrong. The former is just Mist spiraling and thinking about how he messed everything up, but on the latter there is actually a conflict - the page is almost fully encased in blue, with only a bit of orange showing.

There's actually another bit of relevant context here! When it comes to Mist's design, the color blue is a sign of his repression - that's why the large blue coat encases the sweatshirt and pants he wears underneath, why the blue scarf is wrapped around the yellow fur of his neck, and why the weight of the lab accident, the incident that (in Mist's mind) is HIS fault, is on top of his head at all times.

So in the latter panel, it is the very act of Mist repressing his own feelings that is in conflict with Spark, it's his inability to accept the events of the previous night that are stopping him from developing a relationship with Spark at this point

Black/gray is a very simple color in here: I use it for Mist's lowest points, the times of crisis and deepest pits of repression

At first they're small, isolated parts of single pages, thoughts Mist can drown out and repress further, but after Spark's visit, when he's being confronted by his inner demons, he can't ignore it anymore - Mist has bottled up his thoughts for far too long and that has come to bite him in the ass.

Lastly, pink!

Pink is fun because it serves both purposes at once:

It sets the mood for some of the romantic scenes, highlighting the romantic feelings shared between Mist and Spark,

But it's also Agate's main color. It's the color of Mist's biggest regrets when it comes to his romantic life. It's the color of the mistakes he fears he'll make again with Spark. It's the color that proves he doesn't know what love is, not because he lacks experience with love but because he is fundamentally an unlovable person

Or so he thinks. Because as much as it's Agate's color, it's also the color shown with Spark's reaction towards him, the color that shows what they feel about him, and they simply do not think of him like that. In his anguish over how Spark must hate him for what he's done, Spark is realizing that they, in fact, do love Mist. He's not unlovable to them, he's perfect.

I think the color palettes are my favorite part, I love how you made them share a lot of colors but still gave them little touches that make their color palettes unique (like Miki's blue and Miko's yellow and red), it makes the trio seem complete but also makes them stand on their own as individual designs yk?

The clothing is also nice, I like how you sorta spiced up the standard Demon Slayer uniform :]

The technical execution of this panel is FANTASTIC. It's not as detailed as the other one but there is a lot here that makes this genuinely amazing: the subtle foreshortening of TWLaios's arms, the sort of glow effect that he has that contributes to the What The Fuck Is Going On vibe, the details in the architecture itself, the way Chimera Laios just blends into the background, looking like a massive looming figure too large for the party to fight, hell the subtle detail of TWLaios's buttons fighting for their lives, there's so much stuff here!!!!

And then there's the thematic value of this scene. The fact that of the two creatures, the gigantic one hidden away in shadow is the lesser problem, the sheer joy both Laioses must be experiencing, the terrifying prospect of what the party has to do to win now, just the phrase "A nightmare appears" already does A LOT to convey the meaning of it all.

Honestly I'm still torn on which I'm voting for but I think I have to vote for the one on the right, if only for the expressions shown (TWLaios's crazed look Does Things to me)

Man shoutouts to Horikoshi for being fucking amazing in terms of drawing skills. That man gave the main villain like 10 hands (something something everyone always complains about how hard to draw hands are) and just went "lmao that shit easy I could probably outdo myself now" and made Shiggy have like an ever-expanding mass of fingers and hands at the final battle. What a fucking madman I truly commend him for that

Asgore Rants, part 1!

[Disclaimer: these are over a year old and as such don't necessarily reflect my love for this little goober]

Asgore is such a fucking cool dude, and I absolutely adore him. He's a great father, who loves and supports his children, a spectacular king, that did everything in his power to balance his own morals and keeping of hope for his kingdom, and seemed to be a great husband, as he and Toriel complemented eachother very well and were really affectionate, and their separation only happened due ti circumstancesout of their control.

I also love the way he's set up in Undertale, with the buildup of expectations of Toriel and Undyne warning about him initially, only for Papyrus and later Undyne again to disprove those allegations by talking about how he really is!

His battle is really well-done, with challenging attack patterns and a great and iconic moment right at the start, a really off-putting challenge if you're on Pacifist, and simple, but interesting ways of reducing challenge if necessary with the Pie and Talking while LV1; not to mention, his post-battle dialogue and the results of sparing him in certain scenarios are absolutely devastating to watch, whether that be for Flowey to kill him or for him to do it himself.

But wait! I've been almost exclusively talking about Undertale! He's also in Deltarune and that's where half of my love for him came from!

In Deltarune, he is absolutely miserable, after a mysterious divorce and removal from post of chief of police, but still manages to show how much he loves Kris by respecting their dislike for physical touch, is a sweetheart that is almost going homeless due to how much he expresses his love for people, as he gives flowers away instead of selling them, manages to emotionally support Rudy more than his own wife, and is trying to reconnect with his children despite the issues with the divorce. All in all, a great guy who did not deserve suffering as much as he did.

Also I think he is kinda hot but that's beside the point

To kinda clear up the whole situation from 2 days ago

The vent post two days ago was due to a bit of a mental health crisis I had when going home

I don't know if I *should* call it a crisis but I did pretty much cry for almost 3 hours straight so idk what else to call it

After I got home I got way better, I think I'm mostly fine now wrt that specifically but I'm still not like WELL well

The thing that caused the crisis was my crush saying one mean thing to me as a joke

He already apologized even before knowing about the crisis

I'm not hopelessly in love with him anymore tho LMAO

I didn't actually confront him about it because:

I think all of this happened because of The Thing I Didn't Want To Talk About that happened last week. It'll take a while for me to recover from that so more issues are likely lol

I kinda ignored him completely yesterday because I was afraid of lashing out but I did explain the whole thing to him

Hopefully we'll clear things up soon and my claim that he thinks I'm an idiot will be wrong

My hand slipped and I made another

And just after I made a post about it, I'm going to run out of stuff to say about him

I love Asgore, I think he's really well-written, shows a great deal of environmental storytelling, has some amazing music and might end up as some super good mlm rep for Deltarune!

First off, his writing is considerably different from the other characters. Instead of meeting and then knowing him, you get to know him before even seeing his face, by seeing the opinions of most other characters and going through his home. This includes, among other things, the initial dichotomy between "Asgore", the mean murderer who will take your soul, and "King Dreemurr", the fuzzy pushover who will happily let you cross the barrier. This difference is cleared up by Undyne, who clarifies that both are the same person, and that the player can most likely get him to let them go through. However, the absolute bombshell that is the nature of the barrier is dropped at the end of the CORE section, which makes conflict with him inevitable, and this is only exacerbated by New Home, which deserves its own entire comment but let's just talk about it for a bit.

New Home is a fascinating window into Asgore's personality and almost every single object in it is cleverly put there to show insight into the Dreeemurr family, so let's go through every individual object with any sort of relevance. You asked for this.

The Worn Dagger is a christmas gift either from or to Chara, and shows their great relationship. Chara might have been interested in gardening, as their one wish before dying was to see the Golden Flowers, and they're pretty much omnipresent in New Home;

Speaking of that, the Golden Flowers are the only part of New Home with any color other than the ribbons in the gift boxes. This shows Asgore's interest in gardening, along with implying that the absence of his family stripped all color from his life, after all, the only colorful things in there are heavily associated with his children;

The empty reading chair signifies Toriel’s absence and shows that Asgore isn’t as into reading as her;

The locks show that he is open to interactions with the other Monsters, as he lets everyone just go to his house and talk to him, along with having the gameplay purpose of making the player go through his entire home;

The clothes drawer, macaroni art, and calendar also show his relationship with Chara, as he still keeps their sweater even after more than a hundred years, they made a drawing for him and he keeps a constant reminder of their arrival. As such, they were most likely his favorite child;

The Santa outfit is like 3 cans of worms in one, but basically Asgore compares himself to Santa and fills his role in the Underground, to the point where he addresses multiple gifts to Snowdin’s residents under his name. It also ties into his relationship with Rudy, but I’ll get there later;

The trophy and snail containers show how much Asgore misses Toriel, and give a little glimpse of their relationship;

The pie recipes in the garbage show that he is garbage at baking, or at least he isn’t as good as he would like, which coupled with the much more vibrant plants in NH than in the Ruins (like damn girl that flower patch was literally bigger in a garbage dump are you ok?), show that he and Toriel complemented each other with their skills;

The diary is something that I have never seen ANYONE talk about and that is an absolute travesty holy shit. He keeps up a public facade of positivity, down to his diary, meaning he doesn’t even get to confide in his own possessions, all because if his subjects might look there and realize that there really isn’t any hope;

The coffins show how much he respected the humans he took the lives of, as they’re put there along with Chara, who has already been established to be someone he loved very dearly. That comparison also shows how traumatized he was by killing the children;

The family photo. That is it;

The second throne, covered with a white sheet, is one of the many signs of there being a queen, which is something I haven’t really touched on, but that’s not confirmed until a neutral run with the Toriel Queen ending is done, which might be one of the later endings achieved;

Ok I think that’s it in New Home, so let’s get going, now about the music because it is very good. Determination is the first Asgore-related track and it’s a little sad, but pretty simple. Then there’s Memory, which is more of an Asriel track, but appears on Undyne’s monologue about Asgore, and it is one of the most beautiful leitmotifs in the game. Then there’s Small Shock, which is fairly simple, but had an amazing glow up in the Undertale 5th Anniversary Concert that turned it into one of the best tracks in that concert. Bergentrückung and ASGORE are fitting tracks for his battle that also serve as a little exposition dump by confirming that he’s the guy from the Game Over screen and that Toriel has a relation to him;

Now, last thing, the ‘mlm’ part. Asgore is most likely bi or pansexual! This is shown both in the Undertale Alarm Clock app and implied in Deltarune, as his relationship with Rudy seems romantic in both. In the Alarm Clock, there seemed to be an allusion to them kissing with Rudy saying “don’t forget the mistletoe”, they were really important for each other, and Rudy’s marriage not impacting their relationship implying that poly relationships are acceptable in the Underground’s society. A lot of that is also present in Deltarune, but at an earlier stage of relationship, with Rudy questioning Asgore’s gift of flowers, Susie questioning the mere presence of flowers, and the Addisons seemingly implying that poly relationships are also acceptable, as the gang doesn’t question them offering Marriage Shoes to a group of three. This implies that, with proper communication, they could still date each other while married to their respective wives.

Also this conversation, when you go back to the Hospital after going to Sans’s shop, deserves a mention:

Rudy: * 'Sides, your dad ain't much without his main man!

Susie: * Yeah he... had to ask the store guy for free pickles.

Rudy: * Dammit man! You know I would give you free pickles!

Rudy: * I'll kick that store guy's bony little ass!

Susie: * Yeah, me too!

Rudy: * We'll make him into a goddamn xylophone!
