Quick Philippine Comics Review

Dante, Damian and Pascal--That’s the one with a gay couple and their cat daughter, it’s rated PG for some reason despite having possibly rather risque scenes that should push it to rated 13. Later Pugad Baboy cartoons are rated 13 for profanity, well I don’t know why DDP doesn’t get a similar rating for possibly risque scenes.

I also think the artstyle’s reminiscent of Steven Universe, which I suspect the cartoonist behind this was either heavily influenced by it as a fan or more plausibly worked on it as an animator. The way he draws faces looks similar to what’s there in Steven Universe, though more sexualised when it comes to the male form.

Not that I have anything against the male form, but I feel some scenes don’t seem that family friendly whenever a man gets sexualised there. But then again one of my brothers said that there’s a lot of yaoi on PenLab, including more explicit cartoons like My Jowa Crosswise. That one’s rated 18.

It’s not to my taste, I kind of prefer Pupung and Pugad Baboy more honestly.

BURIED GOLD: Oh, Feliciano (Jocson)

Back when I was researching for ☆ LOST & FOUND ☆ while agonizingly restricted to the frustratingly insufficient internet, the most I could find that vouched for Feliciano Jocson as the true designer of the PH flag as we know it today were from two memoirs, neither of them available online. Now that I have legitimate library access once more, I managed to dig those very memoirs up, and the concerned sections.

Testimony #1: Julio Nakpil

He was commissioned by Andres Bonifacio to compose a national hymn for the Revolutionary Government. Too bad the version we got now was by the other camp. (Speaking of Bonifacio, his widow — Gregoria de Jesus — would go on to marry Nakpil).

All Nakpil had to say was a highly frank and overly simplistic sentence at the bottom of the page I shared below. While the RRL section of the thesis grind was always the hardest part, this was precisely why your teachers taught you all never to rest on one source. This was a bane for historians that wanted the tsi— I mean, details.

Testimony #2: Artemio Ricarte

A member of the Katipunan who rose the ranks and later took part with the Philippine Army against the invading Americans. "Vibora" (viper) was a nickname he earned.

This first section to be shared was, more or less, an account of events in defense of Jocson, that matched up to that of Nakpil's above.

Translation:

e — Mr. Feliciano Jocson’s noncompliance to the peace [pact]; His rebellion, capture and disappearance — On the day of General G. Mascardo’s arrival in Biyak-na-Bato, Mr. Feliciano Jocson was also present and expressed his utmost disapproval to the pact, not to reject peace itself, but because of his exclusion by the ingenuine Mr. Aguinaldo, regarding the talks held, resulting in a signing of policies and ultimately the acceptance of peace. In reaction to his stubborn defiance, Mr. Aguinaldo no longer wished to invite him to their travel to Hongkong. At this point, Mr. Aguinaldo had barely left en route for Hongkong, when Jocson, upon returning to his station in Pugad-baboy, part of Caloocan, Manila, had begun to recruit people, in order to continue the Revolution that he was to preside over, and because he used the name of Mr. Andres Bonifacio, he attracted both members and non-members of the Katipunan. And as Jocson forged the signature and seal of President Emilio Aguinaldo onto letters, he was able to grasp control over many rebel leaders, in particular those based around Manila, among them Col. Modesto Ritual who was elected General by Mr. Jocson and the Lt. Col. Mr. Nicomedes Carreon, the younger brother of Mr. Francisco Carreon. Both men were killed in Matikiw, within Pangil, Laguna de Bay, under the directions of the Secretaries-General named Enrique and Leon. In early March 1898, Jocson had hoped to make a surprise attack on the city of Manila, had the men he gathered at Camba Street, Binundok (Manila) not been ambushed. Those very men were bombarded by the Spanish soldiers, using only meager artillery. Few had been captured because of the ones who were not suddenly killed, were finished off with heavy hits from the butts of rifles and kicks. Such an atrocity that was enacted by the Spanish at Camba Street, was also carried out in the towns of Kandong, Ilocos Sur, and San Nikolas, Cebu, because the locals had also revolted at the beginning of the year 1898, all of them being enthralled by Jocson’s passionate speeches. This was the accusation set forth by Aguinaldo’s affiliates within the Spanish government of friarism or paid by the friars, for the actions of Jocson were sincere in their intent of disrupting the pact in Biyak-na-Bato. Because of Jocson's failed attempt on the city of Manila, he rode off, alongside some companions, on the steamer Laguna, disembarked on the town of Laguna de Bay and there was arrested by the men of Katipunan leader Mr. Venancio Cueto, who the day before had received an order from Gen. Pio del Pilar instructing for the capture of Jocson and his associates, because they [Jocson and his men] were ordered by the friars, to continue the Rebellion, and included descriptions of noteworthy facial features of Jocson, for immediate identification. Mr. Jocson and his companions were locked up by Cueto like prisoners in his own house... [illustration] Caption: The 2nd Flag of the Philippines And in my dying breath Will I feel more alive But after Jocson’s interview with Mr. Apolinario Mabini, the Sublime Paralytic, who happened to be hiding in Cueto’s home, Jocson’s men were scrutinized until they were allowed to live like free guests inside [Cueto’s] house. Once Mr. Pio del Pilar learned of Jocson’s capture, he traveled to Laguna de Bay alongside his beautiful sweetheart named Mónica, and, under an oath that took place in front of Mr. Paciano Rizal, that he (del Pilar) would not give away Jocson to the Spanish authorities, and that and that he would bear no guilt, in word and in deed in the presence of anyone - that [Venancio] Cueto finally released his captor, Jocson. Without a doubt, General Pio del Pilar abided by these conditions, and thus he alone should be solely held responsible to answer for the unfathomable loss of this fierce patriot who established the departmental government of the seven provinces of Luzon, became its Secretary of the Interior, and who created (p. 73, part C) the tricolor flag, with its sun and three stars, that watches over all of us here.

I think I went too hard on translating the caption beneath the illustration.

The citation in parentheses was from an earlier section of the book, which actually gave relatively more detail on the occasion of seeing the flag design itself. In my opinion, this was much more satisfactory than Nakpil's efforts.

Translation:

When the government of the Philippine Republic settled in Maragundong [Maragondon, Cavite], Mr. Feliciano Jocson arrived, and from the plaza up to the convent, gave out a loud cry: “Long Live the Freedom of the Philippines!” And to kindle the hearts of the people, announced, among other things, that the arms he purchased from Hong Kong were due to arrive, and with only a little more fortitude in the battlefields will our victory be absolutely certain. Per Mr. Jocson’s request, he was granted permission by Mr. Emilio Aguinaldio to establish a government within the island of Luzon, to be named “Departmental Government of the Seven Provinces of Central Luzon.” Mr. Feliciano Jocson, alongside Mr. Teodoro Gonzalez, was met by [Artemio Ricarte] Vibora at Mainam ó Kaytitingga, Alfonso [Cavite], and in the conversation between Vibora and Jocson, he proposed an insignia in the legitimate establishment of the Departmental Government, and he proceeded to reveal to Vibora a single image of a tricolor flag with a sun and three stars. The provinces that comprised the aforementioned government were the following: Tayabas [Quezon], Laguna de Bay, Morong [Rizal], Manila, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, and Bataan.

Serving a last round of tea, both to give the bitter but necessary closure for Jocson, as well as a correction to a suggestion I made in my previous footnotes.

It was a certain Pio del Pilar who went after Jocson. He was not related in any way to the Gregorio ("Goyo") del Pilar, because Pio deliberately chose a different surname from what he was born under to protect his family. In retrospect, it proved to be a poor choice when it came to preserving one's reputation.

I cropped out two paragraphs — indicated by ellipses — and their corresponding footnotes (the only ones in this section) as they seemed irrelevant.

Admittedly, what left me more shaken was not the recurring (but unsurprising) behavioral pattern of backstabbing between camps, but the mode of discarding captives and the subsequent discovery of their bodies.

Such acts had an extra sting to them when they remained prevalent in the present day.

Surprises

Wow! We are now (it rhymes) in the 3rd month of the year. Time does really fly fast!

February, the month of love, but for me it was the month of surprises. I really thought this going to be a chill month, as it started without anything particular in my mind.

First week, one of my friend started planning a surprise birthday party to one of our friend in the office. It was a success! My friend didn’t even notice a thing. His family and friends were really happy at the outcome.

Second week, I got invited to a convention where local artists were selling their artworks. It was the second time I went in a convention full of temptations (haha yes). I bought a lot of stickers, not just ordinary stickers but my fanboy self is satisfied. Please see the pictures attached.

Indeed, this was the first February I went to a lot of events with of course, my beloved friends.

I hope you had a lot of love this February. Looking forward to many surprises in March!

Book Collection

I had to dust down my bookshelf and it was a good opportunity to take some photos of my books! This is most of my collection, though some are up on my really high shelf and so were not included ^^; If I clean that I’ll just add a follow-up. (also long post and really bad photos I’m so sorry)

So first of all are my two most favorite series ever, the whole Septimus Heap series + the Pathfinder trilogy by Angie Sage, and the Mistmantle Chronicles by M.I. McAllister (I’m missing the last book though....). I love them too much that even after being taught to disembowel literature for my Creative Writing course, you can’t ask me for an objective critique. I suppose some people will disagree and say that you should look at your favorite things even more critically, but I just can’t. I’m not good at critiquing anyway.

Here are three of my favorite short novels. I lean towards fantasy most of the time, but these three were very well written fiction (Because of Winn-Dixie is realistic fiction, and both A Single Shard and Island of the Blue Dolphins are historical fiction, I think?) A Single Shard is really good, I want to look at Linda Sue Park’s other works.

After settling on comics as my thesis I ended up adding much more visual lit and art books to my collection. I rarely buy novels now, unless a really intriguing one catches my eye at a booksale.

So here’s my manga collection! With an obvious bias towards Akira Himekawa’s LoZ mangas (ironically I still haven’t bought the OoT one, which is the first of the Zelda mangas I think?) I wish I could buy the other volumes of Silver Spoon, it’s a really good read. The KH manga I was luck enough to catch at a booksale for only PhP 65, which is hardly above $1! The Zelda mangas I bought at Fully Booked (same goes for my art books) I wish there was a Fully Booked closer to me, the only other bookstores are National Book Sale (which are 70% school supplies and 30% books and usually don’t carry comics) and booksales.

Now for Filipino Komiks! The reason I got really interested in comics as an area of study is Rob Cham’s silent graphic novel, Light. Before that, me and my family have been reading whatever volumes of Pugad Baboy we could get, so the really ratty looking ones are the ones we’ve managed to keep up to the present time (I also have the giant copy of Pugad Baboy X but didn’t get to include it here). Thankfully, National Book Store stocks Light and Lost, but that is for usually for bigger malls (they used to have Pugad Baboy, but now I rarely see it there, but my copies of Kikomachine Komix are from there too). Dead Balagtas’s Tomo 1 (which is really gorgeous!) I was able to get at a comic event my college organization held at the university. However, Ella Arcangel, Elmer, 12 and 14 were bought at Komikon, which I was lucky enough to attend in 2018. Sadly, Komikon is probably the only best opportunity to buy most Filipino comic stuff, and I live too far from Manila to go every time. I wish I can go again. I was able to meet sir Pol Medina Jr. and sir Gerry Alanguilan at Komikon, I even got my copy of Elmer sighed. Rest in peace, sir Alanguilan :<

Maybe I’ll make another post detailing more Filipino komiks stuff? I really have a lot of feelings on this subject haha.

Now for miscellaneous English comics. I included Arzach though that book is a novelization of certain stories (it does have some illustrations though!) Hopefully I can buy an actual compilation of Arzach comics sometimes, it’s something I’m really interested in. That aside, most of these books were from the Big Bad Wolf Booksale (look, book sales are just my weakness, ok). I really enjoyed these two volumes of Flight and I hope to buy the others sometime. Vogelein I got from...surprise, a book sale! And I really love that one too. What’s not to like with fairies, even clockwork ones.

Now for the jewel of the collection...

The big and beautiful art books which I may or may not have deprived myself of a few lunches to be able to save up enough (also convenience store food dinners wooh! But please don’t copy me, eat healthily when you’re in college!!! >:0)

 I also have the Zelda Goddess Books and the BotW art book, which I I think I showed before in a Zelda collection post? But aside from that, here are the Art of Ghibli books which I thank Fully Booked for stocking. Howl’s Moving Castle was my first purchase because Howl, but man do I love the Nausicaa ad Ponyo art. I was also super, super lucky to get the art book for Kubo and the Two Strings at the Manila International Book Fair! That and a Japanese-only copy of Haikara Walker made my arm ache but I was so stoked to get them. (aand I forgot to include my Splatoon art book and Haikara Walker here. Oops.) I also have sky longing for memories/The Art of Makoto Shinkai up on the top.

I think that’s about it, but I very ready to discuss any of the books above if my rambling didn’t bore you ^^;

Kelan nga ba ako napamahal sa pag babasa?

Sa tuwing naaalala ko kung kelan ko natutunan at nahiligan mag basa, unang pumapasok sa utak ko si Mama. Tandang tanda ko pa nu’n, sa tuwing mag kakaroon sya ng sahod dadaan kaming palengke ng marikina. Sa tapat ng Sta Elena High School nun may maliit school supplies store na nagtitinda ng mga pocket books. Sa halagang 12, 15, 20 pesos nakakabili si mama ng 2 o 3 romance pocket book plus soduko, wordhunting o crossword puzzle at pocket book pangbata para naman sakin. Dalawa lang kami mama ko nu’n sa buhay. Wala akong kapatid kaya madali sakin nun ang mabored kapag wala na akong kalaro (it’s either kasi nag sesiesta yung mga kababata ko, or hapon na ang laro namin sa kalsada kapag wala nang araw). Kaya kapag nag sawa naman ako mag laro mag isa sasagutan ko yung binili ni tulag ng wordhunting o kaya babasahin yung pocket book na binili nya. 

Naalala ko tuloy, yung mga pocket book na binibili nya sakin nun kung ikokompara ko sa mga book ngayon, yung mga kwento at plot ay tulad ng mga ginagawa nina Rick Riordan at JK Rowling. Maiksi nga lang mga mga kwento. So nuon pa lang talaga mahilig na ako sa mga fantasy at fiction genre ng  storyline.  Tas kukulitin ko nu’n si mama na mamalengke ulit kami para makadaan dun sa store at ibili uli ako ng pocket book.

Naalala ko din nu’n bago ako matulog may maliit ako na bible. Bata pa ako nung nahiligan kong mag basa ng bible. 9 or 10yr old ata ako nuon. New testament na ng bible yung binabasa ko nun, tanda ko kasi unang pahina nun na “Roll of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, son of David, son of Abraham, Abraham fathered Isaac, Isaac fathered Jacob, Jacob fathered Judah and his brothers, Judah fathered Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar, Perez fathered Hezron, Hezron fathered Ram....” fathered ganito and so on and so forth. Hindi ko lang sure kung natapos ko pero sure ako nakakalahati ako kasi madami din naman pa ako kwentong naalala galing duon. Minsan namimiss ko yung batang ako, nakakatuwa na sa murang edad natutunan na nya magbasa ng bibliya.

Tulad ng sabi ko kanina madali ako mabored nuong bata ako. Kapag di pa oras ng laro sa kalye. Sa loob lang ako ng bahay, nag lalaro mag isa, nagkukulay, nag dodrawing at nag susulat ng kung ano ano (Elementary ako neto pero hindi ako mahilig mag aral at gumawa ng assignments). Isang araw wala na din akong natitirang babasahin, nabasa ko na din mga kwento sa elementary textbook na pahiram pa ng deped nun. Ayoko naman buklatin yung math textbook kasi wala naman ako mababasa dun at kasasabi ko lang, hindi ako mahilig magaral. Wala na talaga ako magawa that day, kaya nung napatingin ko sa isang boxes nga mga romance pocket book ni mama nag try ako kumuha ng isa. Hindi naman nya ako pinag babawalan mag basa ng mga pocket books nya, pero alam ko din naman kasi na hindi yun pang bata kaya hindi ko pinapansin. Pero na curious ako kung bakit humaling si mama dun at kahit wala pang kalahating araw e nakakatapos na sya nga isang pocket book (naiinggit pa nga ako nun at napapaisip sana ako din mabilis magbasa). So I tried one pocket book na precious heart romances. Hanggang sa naging 2, 3 at lahat na ng binibili ni mama binabasa ko na din. In short, grade 5 or 6 lang ata ako nuon alam ko na kiligin because of my mother’s pocket books. At sa maniwala kayo o sa hindi, kapag may intimate part or love making part nilalagpasan ko ‘yun (Pero later on nung highschool na ako binabasa ko na din. Hihi). Kinakabahan ako e, paniwala ko nun sobrang bata ko para makabasa ng ganun tapos takot ako mahuli ni mama na nababasa ko yung ganun part but anyway hindi pa din ako pinagbawalan magbasa ni mama ng mga pocket books n’ya. Nakakahinayang lang kasi 3 kahon na malalaki ang naipon nyang ganun at hindi ko alam kung san na napunta.

Sumunod naman is nung 1st  year high school ako sa Sta Elena, Marikina. Hindi pa din ako natigil mag babasa nuon ng pocket books (pang kids or romance story man) Mahirap kami, hindi namin afford ng mama ko na bumili ng mga Rick Riordan or JK Rowling books sa national books store. Bukod dun, di pa din ako mahilig magbasa ng mga english novels kasi baka sumakit at dumugo lang utak ko sa mga words. So ayun nga, balik sa kwento. Nung 1st year H.S. ako sa sta elena, hanggang 12nn ang pasok ko. Every uwian dumederetso ako sa Marikina Sports center kung saan merong isang malaking public library. Hindi ko na maalala kung paano ko nadiskubre yun, pero after class duon ako naderetso at hindi sa sakayan pauwi sa bahay. Favorite ko mag tambay dun, bukod kasi sa malamig naiinlove ako sa amoy ng mga libro, lalo na yung mga 2nd hand book na kulay brown ang mga pahina, basta hindi yung mga brand new (obviously!). Hindi ko talaga problema nuon kung hindi ako makabili ng books kasi nga may free public library naman, at duon naman natuto ako mag basa ng mga enlish na young adult genre ng books, pero yung maninipis lang like 50pages or less than 200 pages. Nakalimutan ko na din yung mga kwento na nababasa ko dun sa marikina library, hindi kasi ako palatanda sa author, more on stories ako nag fofocus. Hahaba na ito masyado kung ikukwento ko yung mga nabasa ko nun. Pero anyway ayun nga, ang isang libro na binabasa ko sa marikina libray at inaabot ng 2 days kasi syempre hindi naman ako maghapong nakatambay dun, hindi ko din alam paano hiramin. So itatabi ko na lang sya sa isang shelf at tatandaan ko kung saan nakapwesto para the next day babalikan ko at tatapusing basahin.

Pero uunahan na kita, hindi ako loner or yung sobrang wirdo. May mga kaibigan naman din ako. May mga time nga lang talaga na mas pinipili ko mag isa at magbasa.

So moving on, dumating yung araw na kailangan ko umuwi ng probinsya at duon ituloy ang pag aaral ng highschool. Yung mga unang taon ko dun nakakapanibago, walang friends tas maaga pa nag sisitulugan mga tao, ibang iba sa nakalakihan ko sa marikina na na kahit gabi na may mga bata pa ding nag lalaro ng habulan sa kalye. Yung pasok ko pa sa school buong mag hapon. Namiss ko nuon yung library sa marikina. One time umuwi din yung tita ko from manila, may mga dala syang textbook na pang higher year at college galing sa studyanteng nag aaral sa private school. Inuwi nya kasi alam kong magagamit namin. Which is nagamit ko naman talaga. Walang public library sa probinsya kaya naman kapag dumarating na yung oras na wala na akong magawa, yung mga textbooks niiiscan ko. Yung mga klase ng textbook na naiuwi ni tita ay mga english literature, filipino literature at science book. Syempre alam mo nadapat kung alin sa tatlong yung ang di ko binubuksan. Dun ko natutunan basahin yung mge excerpt from mythology, tulad Odyssey,  Oedipus, Pyramus and Thisbe  at ilan pang ping kwento about mythology. Mga short stories at poems nina Robert Frost, Nick Joaquin, Lualhati Bautista. (Again hindi ko tanda yung ibang author kasi hindi ako ganun kafocus kaya moslty yung mga sikat na pangalan ang tands ko kasi until now nakikita ko pa din mga names nila). Pero may mga tanda din akong titles tulad ng, May day eve, The truce in the forest, Invictus Biag ni Lam-ang, excerpt ng Noli Me Tangere at El Fili, at madami pang short stories na hindi naman talaga literal na short kasi umaabot ng 5-8 yung pages.

Sa probinsya pa din at highschool days, eto naman yung time na kaibigan ko na yung 2 ding transferee galing sa manila din. Nakakahiram ako sa kanila ng babasahain tulad ng komiks na Pugad Baboy at Bob Ong’s ABNKKBSNPLako. Ako naman mahilig lang talaga mag basa at wala pa ding pang bili ng libro kaya tamang basa basa lang sa mga resources na meron ako. Yung isa sa transferee pala mahilig na that time sa english novels. Kasagsagan ng unang twilight movie, sya tapos na buong series ng book. Sa sobrang excitement nya sa kwento ng twilight, sa’ken at sa isa pa naming friend nya lang naikukwento yung nabasa na nya sa book, ayaw daw nya ishare sa iba. Ayaw din nya ipahiram yung book kasi sobramg favorite nya talaga yun. As for me naman, hindi pa ako nakakabasa that time ng makakapal na english novels. And since di nya mapahiram yung twilight books nya kasi sobrang iniingatan nya, yung isang book na  ang title is “The Host” ang pinahiram nya. Since si Stephenie Meyer  din naman daw ang author. Nung una ko nakita ang book, di ko sure kung sisipagin akong basahin since medyo makapal na para sa akin yun. Pero ni try ko pa din basahin. Simula nun nag crave pa ako sa mga ganung klase ng books. Tapos after ata ng the host, yung books 3 ng  Harry Potter din pinahiram nya ako.

Kaya nung nag college na ako sa bulacan, since hindi ko pa din afford bumili bili ng books, nagtyaga lang muna ako sa ebooks and syempre pati wattpad. Yes, pala basa ako nun sa wattpad, hindi pa sya nun ganun ka trend wayback 2012-2013. What comics should be

I feel that when it comes to comics by Joe Sacco, they all represent what else can be done with comics. Using cartoons to comment on current events and social problems isn’t anything new, things like Pugad Baboy and the like all deal with sociopolitical problems from time to time. I actually see comics journalism as the logical extension of this school of cartooning, albeit with greater precision and care taken to document what’s going on as the cartoonist illustrates and writes those stories. Joe Sacco must’ve kept a recorder and a camera in handy whenever he documents what went on in places like Palestine and Bosnia.

That’s not to say there aren’t any truly ambitious cartoonists out there in comics and especially comic books, but comics journalism is a fairly new field where one uses comics to document what’s going on in the world around us. Especially whenever it involves sensitive topics like what’s been done to Palestine time and time again, again these kinds of topics may have already been covered before in both editorial cartoons and daily cartoon strips but what comics journalism does is to tackle them in greater depth. That means more pages to transcribe and recall what went on when somebody like Joe Sacco was hanging out as he covered something.

It needn’t to be journalism to do the job, but I feel Sacco is one of the more ambitious cartoonists to date. He uses comics to discuss and portray hot-button topics like how war’s always being waged on Palestinian soil or what happened in Bosnia before in the 1990s, he spares almost no details about what else goes on however triggering they are for some people. But I feel his stories represent what comics can and should do when it comes to covering something in greater depth that isn’t always about one’s personal life, rather it ought to cover anything else like what prose nonfiction documents do. It could be about garment factories, a topic that I’ve never seen in comics (from experience).

There might be more ambitious cartoonists from anywhere, be it France or Japan, waiting to be translated but when they themselves get overshadowed by flashy speculative stories it can be this hard to find comics stories that focus on humans as they are. Let alone whenever it takes place in real life horrors like what’s going on in Palestine that should be addressed more often.
