so! essentially the main thing here is whether your high-school diploma is enough for university study, i.e: is it qualified as a Hochschulzugangsberechtigung, HZB. I did the International Baccalaureate diploma, and based on the curriculum (and subjects chosen) you have studied, the route will be different for you. the German curriculum is of course best for studying there, but the IGCSE one is solid too. I am not sure for others, I live in kenya, so the main education systems are the Kenyan one, IB, and the Cambridge IGCSE one. best websites to use to figure out how to get there are as follow. the main categories are:

a. diploma valid in both country of education + Germany

b. diploma valid in only country of education, not germany

c. diploma not valid

based on your choice for your field, and also bachelors, masters or phd, all play a role. stem courses will generally not be taught in English, and you will just have to know German, if you want to study stem. unless you can find a specific international university, there are almost no courses (I could not find even one pure physics course in English) for stem in English. if there are, you will probably compromise on quality of education.

humanities courses are taught in English, so if you go into literature, business, psychology, economics, hotel management, etc. there are plenty of courses at very very good universities.

public universities are usually the best in Germany, have relatively low tuition (recently introduced in some uni's for international students) and are extremely high in quality.

what I am doing rn

my diploma went into category b, above. despite getting above average IB points, being a student with tons of extracurriculars, the subjects I took, along with the general regard of the IB diploma in Germany resulted in my situation.

I have to do a studienkolleg (a foundation course for international students). in order to apply for a stem oriented course, as I am going into physics (women in stem!!), I need a studienkolleg, and in order to go into the studienkolleg, I need B2 German.

I have essentially taken a year off (may 2023 - sept 2024) to figure out how I am getting there. I started German in September 2024, after figuring out I need to know it + I need a foundation. everyone online has said you can't learn a foreign language in a year - do not listen to them, it is entirely possible, difficult, but honestly doable.

so yeah! ask if you have any other questions. despite all this, the reason I want to study there is quality of education in relation to tuition, the job market, the benefits for international students, and the quality of life.

What the heck is a Studienkolleg?

If you're planning on studying in Germany, and belong to a certain country, whose education board is not recognised by the German government, for example, the Central Board of Secondary Education (India) or the education board in Russia, Vietnam or Thailand, you might have to apply for a course at the Studienkolleg, which is a German bridge course to bridge the gap between high school and the German university you want to apply to. I'm going to study at the Studienkolleg Mittelhessen, Marburg, Hesse, Germany starting from 3rd September.

1. It's a bridge course.

It's kinda like taking a gap year, but it's a lot like university, as far as I've heard from some of my friends living in Germany.

2. The Courses

At my Studienkolleg, you have the following courses:

W-Kurs for kids who want to study economics or something else in the field of commerce

T-Kurs for tech and engineering

M-Kurs for med school aspirants

G-Kurs for those who want to pursue the arts and/or the field of humanities

I wanted to pursue psychology along with G-Kurs. So, my course is actually G-Kurs (Psychologie)

3. Public Studienkollegs are always the best

Private Studienkollegs offer six-month courses but are expensive as hell. The tuition fees range from 500-600 €. That's literally my monthly expense. My Studienkolleg is a public institution. We don't have to pay our tuition fees, but we have to pay our semester fees, which consists of our semester ticket (it's a ticket specially for students which allows them to use public transport for free throughout the semester) and our contribution to the student union. The semester fees range from 200-350 €, which is cheap as hell. This also applies to uni students. Private educational institutions in general really suck in Germany.

4. You need to pass an entrance test to enter

You need at least have a B1 Level certificate in the German language either from the Goethe Institute or ZfA (Zentralstelle für Auslandschulwesen). I have DSD-I B1 certificate from ZfA. I had to appear for the German proficiency test, which consists of a vocabulary test and a reading comprehension test in Sociology and German Literature. If you have DSD-II (B2/C1), you don't have to appear for the German proficiency test. M, T, and W-Kurs applicants have to appear for a math test alongwith the German proficiency test (if they don't have a DSD-II certificate).

5. It's mainly for international students

You won't find German students in your class. There will be a bunch of Russians, Vietnamese kids, Thai kids and Indonesians. My friend and I are the only Indians in the whole Studienkolleg.

6. It's not a waste of time

It's an experience of a lifetime. You'll be studying in this stunning country with kids from all around the world and you'll get to experience an exam (Festellungsprüfung), which is very similar to the Abitur.

7. The medium of instruction is in German

All the courses are in German, which is useful since it's difficult to find English courses at good, state universities in Germany. It's also essential, if you plan on working in Germany later on. Each course also has Deutsch als Fremdsprache (German as a foreign language) subject, so you can qualify as a C2 Level student in German.

What are the Admission Requirements for bachelors in Germany?

For pursuing Bachelors in Germany (UG courses in Germany) you must complete your High School Graduation or Diploma graduation. In addition to that, you have to do one year course (which is equivalent to Studienkolleg) in your home country else you can opt for Studienkolleg in Germany.

Language Proficiency:

Proficiency in German language and English language is a prerequisite for admission requirements for bachelors in Germany. Because most courses are taught in German.

For Proficiency in German language, you have to clear either of the two main tests. -Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (DSH, meaning “German language examination for university entrance”) TestDaF (formerly Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache, meaning “Test of German as a foreign language”) with the minimum level of B2

For Proficiency in English language, you have to clear either IELTS or TOFEL with the minimum score of 6.5.

Note: Before attempting, check which test is accepted by the university you've chosen.

Financing your studies in Germany:

Proof of finances, you have to submit a proof that you are financially stable to complete your graduation in Germany. Either you can submit the documents of your parents' income or a financial asset with the monetary value of at least 8640 euros. If not, a permanent resident in Germany should assure to cover your expenses.

There are also some scholarship opportunities available in some universities to cover your expense during your bachelors program in Germany despite tuition fee itself is free. The applicant must prove that they have around 8640 euros for a year during the visa interview.

You can also choose for a blocked account in Germany. You can deposit minimum of 8640 euros and you can withdraw whenever you need.

Passport

You have to submit a copy of your passport which displays your personal information. It should be valid until you complete your bachelors in Germany.

Visa permit  

Apply for the right visa at the right time, because visa procedures takes months to be processed. There are different type of visa for students to study in Germany,

Language Course visa - Particularly for learning German language in short period of time, valid from 3 months to 1 year. This visa cannot to be replaced with student visa.

Student Applicant visa - when you didn't get the acceptance letter from the university or you are confused on which course to choose. If you are applying for Studienkolleg in Germany, this visa is applicable.

Student Visa - When your application is accepted by a German university.

Insurance

You have to provide a proof of health insurance when you enroll in a university. Germany has made an agreement with some countries which comes under the norms of European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). It covers any medical needs in Germany. If your country doesn’t come under this agreement you can opt for the Public or Private Health Insurance Policy.

You can opt for a Private Health Insurance which will cost about 35 euros per month. Whereas, the Public Health Insurance will cost you about 80 euros per month. With that in mind, don’t forget to take a travel insurance before going to the visa interview in German embassy in your home country.

You must need a travel insurance for visa permits. You can contact a travel insurance provider of your choice and take the insurance.

Once you land in Germany, you need to get a Health Insurance, without health insurance you can’t enroll in your University. It’s one of the main admission requirements for bachelors in Germany.
