I’m not far into Disco Elysium but I think it is telling that I keep finding myself having to take little breaks, or replay the most mundane scenes, because so many moments have made my heart just… swell.

It’s so melancholic, yet so absurd and so funny, so unfiltered. Its rambling conversations, its violently endearing depictions of unruly kids. The music and ambiance and setting and art, the frank discussions of class and race within its lore. Harry and Kim? I’m entranced by their dynamic so far. They chime so well off of one another, the way I’m playing first time around.

What’s gotten me most is it’s gut-wrenchingly raw interpretation of psychosis symptoms and dissociation being so competently written, and so realistic/relatable, but with this cushion of sincerity and artistry to hold your hand throughout. It simulates a mental collapse — its ugliness & chaos & inevitable self-destruction, but also the poetry & the strange allure someone might feel to remain in that headspace, in perpetual psychedelic escapism — without throwing you headfirst to drown in that simulation, which is especially important for people who have gone through that trauma before.

In fact, Kim feels like a wonderful metaphor for being the foot in reality that keeps Harry grounded as he struggles not to float into oblivion. Two sides of the same coin of survival in a cruel, amazing world.

It’s… beautiful? It’s just beautiful… it’s so beautifully tender. So philosophical.

Just bursting at the seams with humanity.

This game is a massive tangle of contradictions. Just like people can be.

I honestly don’t know how they did it. I know I’m singing high praise here for someone whose been playing it for only 3 days.

But I’m moved. I feel seen and understood with this game.

It’s kind of breathtaking.

Anti’s would hate the Splatterpunk book genre, me thinks. It was made during times of heavy censorship, so there’s graphic descriptions of very dark topics. We all know how booktok reacted to “Playground” after all.

The books give you a fucking warning before you read them. If you’re gonna read a Splatterpunk book, TAKE THE WARNINGS SERIOUSLY.

ragged breaths pour out of you as you scrub your hands clean of the crimson liquid which stains your hands and your very soul. it was brutal and beautiful—the colour and how the red strands swirled around as it united before falling down the sink pipe.

you blink and clench your hands. the very hands which so effortlessly carved up the heart from inside the man laying on your rough ‘operating table’. you are terrible, yes. there was no other word to describe you. a vigilante, maybe? but did it even matter when there is a part of you which feels the thrill of the killings and torture that you so cunningly come up with no mercy?

no, actually, there are other words to describe you. heartless, being one of them. the irony of that when you quite literally removed someone’s heart recently is not lost on you.

rotten. sadistic. torturous. depraved. murderer.

it was how you revelled in the pain you caused others; how you can’t stop the excitement spreading across your body when you see the utter terror in their eyes; how you sometimes let them have a moment of freedom, just to tear it all away at once and see as hopelessness encompasses every cell of their body. the scalpel that you used in carving the man’s heart probably possessed more sympathy than you did.

you are not the same, the voice taunts you. you are not the same person who cried over the dead raven for night’s on end. you can’t even recognise yourself. you are twisted and depraved and oh-so sick in the head. you are broken in ways you don’t even know.

you try to deny it at first, try to resist with every shaky breath that you do this for the greater good. but you know, deep down, you know that this is what you are: a monster masquerading as a human. you have as much heart as the corpse on your operating table with the empty chest.

you try to find some semblance of yourself on the broken pieces of the vanity mirror scattered around you. but you can truly see your twisted visage on the abnormal reflections. it was as if a sculptor had chipped away at you to add all the cruelty of the world and none of its gentleness.

you were made of jagged edges and sharp thorns. made to admire, not to love.

I also just realized that we really only get the 7 days before the crash to really see the people Curly and Anya were before the crash. It's not even the full seven days. We get the first two and the last two with a gap in the time for what could have gone down.

I just realized how vague it was and how quickly it all happened. They are such small moments and such short glimpses. She's only just told Curly two days before the crash. The next she told Jimmy and Curly had to confront him. It's further implied right after that conversation, Curly goes to collect himself and figure things out and Jimmy immediately crashes the ship, once he's far enough to not stop him, cause he knows Curly would never truly allow it to happen.

But he takes that as the okay to go ahead, because in the long time he's known Curly, that's always been the okay.

The difference in the gaps in the timeline really just paint a bigger less explained but more obvious picture.

just finished the demo and first of all, your lyrics are so good. like are you sure youre not a professional lyricist?? second of all, i love how you write the mc and their background. as someone who was in a psych ward at 14-16, i’ve never felt so seen while reading before. especially the scenes with mc’s single mom. it hurts with how accurate it is but it’s also very cathartic. you write beautifully and i feel like with sm care so i just wanted to thank you for sharing!!

Omg thank you. I swear, people complimenting my lyrics has been such a wonderful surprise. I spend so much consideration on them tbh 😅 I'm not a lyricist by any means, I just rly love music and dissecting lyrics and I used to want to be a singer (I know, I know, don't come at me) so I've been writing "songs" since I was a kid.

I'm really glad you feel seen by my writing. I'm partially writing this IF in hopes of connecting "target audience", i.e. other people who have gone through certain stuff, and it makes me so happy when I hear I'm achieving this.
