Made an animatic of a scene from The Clone Wars Gets A New Victim Chapter 35: Checkmate. This is one of my favorite scenes in the entire story and has some of my favorite lines.

Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.

Grim Kennet and Anakin Skywalker parallels.

The difference between them is that Grim learns to overcome her darkness and search for the light. Anakin surrenders to his darkness, trapped forever by its clutches.

Flames of the Soul

Fire symbolizes many things, sometimes it can be comforting such as the kind warmth of a fireplace or sometimes it can bring about this dark feeling of dread as it destorys whatever is in its path leaving behind only ashes in its wake.

Grim and Anakin both have fires in their hearts but the kind of fires are different.

Grim's fire is the comforting type, like a campfire as one star gazes as the flames keep them comfort and warmth. Though if uncontrolled the fire could burn into the destructive type. However Grim tends to her fire well and so it remains safe and a symbol of her hope.

Anakin's fire is the destructive type, the type that ravages anything in its path. Leaving behind a trail of ashes. His fire is one of fury and passion that causes him to fall faster into a pit of endless torment.

Grim and Anakin both have fires in their hearts but the fires are different kinds.

Grim & Anakin Foils

Why Grim stands while Anakin falls

Grim acknowledges her mistakes while Anakin refuses to do so.

Grim has a sparking example of what to Not Became and also as the knowledge that even if she fails there will be good in the end, that Light will win.

Grim has hope and tries to cling to it because after being thrown into a world she knew was going to most likely end up in chaos, it was all she had left.

The difference between Anakin and Grim is the fact that Anakin was always given the easy way, when he discovered what he would become he fell in despair and became a Sith.

Grim didn't have the option to do that, she wasn't given a easy way, she had to be a Padawan in the middle of war time and deal with everything that was happening.

She didn't have time to fall, especially not when everything was echoing in the back of her mind, becoming louder and louder and louder as the war went on because she knew what was going to happen.

Grim always gets back up. Even when pushed to the brink. Even when she knows she has failed. She gets back up and continues to hold on to and look for the light. To hold onto hope. Anakin gives up. He goes for the easy route. However Grim remains determined through everything. Yes there are times where she almost quits, but she doesn't. Grim always stands back up.

Grim is basically what would have happened if Anakin took the hard way and tried to get back up

The foil is that Anakin took a easy way and Grim didn't.

The question haunts me

Though it is clear that we see the tragedy

He is dead

I understand that these were all my mistakes

The padawan embraced the older Jedi - they understood. They feared for the future and were desperate to prevent the deaths of those they loved.

Though desperation changes a person, when one is desperate they do things that they never would do.

Grim ignited her lightsaber, the purple blade impaling her brother.

"I'm sorry," she whispered to him, as tears began to fall once more.

She let go of the embrace, but before the dying Jedi could fall to the floor she caught him. Anakin looked up at the padawan. Betrayal etched on his face. His own tears shimmering in the light of the stars. "Why?" he asked her, as he began to fade away.

"I have to save them," she replied. "It's too late for us, but maybe not for them."

I think Grim and Vader should have more interactions but I also think they shouldn't interact that often and Vader more haunts Grim's mind as she knows that she could've prevented this monster from existing and knew he would be created but did nothing to stop it. Grim and Vader shouldn't encounter much maybe four or five times in the span of the Empire. Still Vader haunts Grim's every moment because she has realized she could've been him and he could've been better.

I think the first time they encounter after Mustafar should be only a week after Grim stops hiding. I think Grim hides her fear and pain by remarking about Mustafar and taunting him for his loss there. I think she should barely escape the fight alive. I think Vader should go through his whole "Anakin Skywalker is dead" spiel but imagine if he added that Grim already knew that because she admitted it before he even fully fell, before he even became Vader.

The next time the encounter more years have passed. Grim is now a full fledged Rebel. Their fight is longer and Grim is stronger than before. Still Vader captures her. Grim is afraid. She thought Vader would kill her. Vader is after Kenobi. Grim refuses to betray Obi-Wan, she tells Vader she won't betray him like Vader did. Except she doesn't say Vader. Grim never calls him Vader. She calls him Skywalker. She knows who this monster is. She despises that she called him her brother once. Grim barely escapes with her life.

Their every encounter Grim and Vader begin to see themselves in the other. They despise it. They haunt each other. They don't encounter often, but they never escape.

Shadows settle on the place that you left

Our minds are troubled by the emptiness

The Jedi Temple was the place that they left. Once it was full of light and now because of Order 66 it has been tainted by the darkness. Anakin's mind may not be troubled by the emptiness of life within the place he once called home, but Grim's mind is. There used to be so much life within the Jedi Temple and now it is gone.

Destroy the middle, it's a waste of time

From the perfect start to the finish line

Grim and Anakin's relationship was great at the beginning. They were close friends and Grim couldn't help but see Anakin as a brother, and Anakin saw the padawan as his little sister. As the war went on their friendship began to grow weaker as Grim avoided Skywalker knowing who he would become. At the finish line of the war Grim saw Anakin as dead, for all that was left was for him to become Vader. 

And if you're still breathing, you're the lucky ones

'Cause most of us are heaving through corrupted lungs

On Mustafar all that is left is fire. In the end Anakin is destroyed by the flames.

Anakin was afraid to let go of Padmé and fell to the dark. Ahsoka had to leave the Jedi and Grim let her go.

We are the reckless, we are the wild youth

Grim and Anakin are both young and wild, and tend to be reckless and impulsive, never listening to their Master.

Chasing visions of our futures

Anakin has visions of the future that Grim knows of. Both of them wish to change this future for the better and to save lives. Chasing after the future in vain hope that maybe it can be changed. For the future isn't set in stone, yet tragedy seems to be destined for the two of them.

One day we'll reveal the truth

After the war  - if they hadn't failed. Both of them had planned to reveal the truth. Anakin would leave the Jedi to be with his wife, and Grim would tell the Council everything that would've happened and she would no longer hide the fact that she was from another universe.

That one will die before he gets there

On Mustafar Grim goes to kill Anakin. She is determined to kill him before Obi-Wan gets there. To end Vader before he can take any more lives. Anakin fights back against the padawan, also determined to kill her. Both thinking the other will die. Anakin doesn't know that Obi-Wan is coming but Grim does and she wants to make sure Vader is dead before he gets there. Or she might die before he gets there. In the end neither of them die, but Grim does lose an arm before he gets there.

Seeing what happened at the Temple broke Grim. She wasn't in the light, even standing by Obi-Wan and Yoda's side. She slipped into the darkness and her grief was replaced with anger and hate. Anakin's fear had long since turned to anger. The anger in their hearts matched the flames of the world around them as they faced each other on Mustafar.

It was a flood that wrecked this

The "flood" here is Order 66, and their home is the Jedi Temple. Everything is gone and has been erased and the pictures of memories that existed for so long have been destroyed by the darkness.

Anakin caused the massacre at the Temple. Even if Grim wasn't there for it she saw the aftermath and she knows he caused it. Sidious may have given the order but Anakin chose to follow. He caused it.

Well, I've lost it all, I'm just a silhouette

I'm a lifeless face that you'll soon forget

In the end both of them die on Mustafar. Anakin Skywalker died long ago. Grim was fighting a ghost and she knew that in her heart. He was just a lifeless face, and Grim was left as a silhouette who had lost it all after Order 66. She had lost her family from Earth and now she had lost her family from Star Wars and in that grief she turned to the darkness.

My eyes are damp from the words you left

After Mustafar all Grim can think about are Anakin's screams. They haunt her every moment, knowing she could have stopped it. Knowing also that it could have been her and that Anakin could have chosen differently, chosen the light still.

To distract our hearts from ever missing them

But I'm forever missing him

Grim mourns everyone. The Jedi. The Clones. The Light. All gone, as she tries so hard to distract her heart from missing them. However she will always miss her family, even the brother who betrayed her. She will miss Anakin Skywalker forever.

Anakin Skywalker made the choices he did in the end. Grim Kennet never spoke up. She lives with the guilt, and believes she caused it even if she never did the actions or spoke the words. The blood is shared on both of their hands. They caused it.

I had the idea of Grim dragging Anakin out of the lava because she still cares about him but Anakin is absolutely still dark and angry and so he tries to kill her.

Someone take away my Mustafar privileges.
