Athener Kaffee-Tagebuch: Krasopoulio tou Kokkora in Psirri

What a super day in Athens! After a leisurely breakfast we managed to catch the changing of the guards at Syntagma monument. In the afternoon we explored the trendy Psirri area. And finally a visit to the Akropolis while enjoying spectacular views over the city in a golden light sunset.

Street Art-Athens(nominate1)
Street art appears in public spaces in cities, sometimes as graffiti, sometimes as performances, or as murals. These works serve as a form of visual expression that conveys social, political or cultural criticism(Millner,2017).Therefore, in order to be able to travel, the best way to get an insight into the human, political and cultural background of the area is to observe street art. In the center of Athens lies a historic area called Psirri, which underwent a complete transformation before the 2004 Olympics. Once known for its high crime rate and bad reputation, Psirri has undergone a massive renovation and transformation into a trendy area with sophisticated bars and restaurants, and is now one of the most fashionable and vibrant areas in the center of Athens, with its unique charm and trendy atmosphere(Blocal,2022).
Tumblr media
Graffiti and murals are found in different locations in Psirri, and everywhere you look, graffiti makes the neighborhood lively and colorful. Some of the graffiti has been randomly created to provide an artistic vibe to the space. Others have deeper meanings, such as this one from Experiences, 'All dogs go to heaven', a wonderful portrait of Loukaniko, a dog that became a symbol of rebellion and freedom during the demonstrations during the Greek debt crisis. (n.d.). The meaning of the graffiti needs to be felt by the traveler through the city in order to reshape the “unofficial” identity of Athens, to gain a deeper understanding of the dynamics of what is happening in the area or simply to admire it.
