Malaysian Open - Round One: A good day for the Hosts...
Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Nafiizwan Adnan and Ng Eain Yow kept hopes of a home winner alive as they both served up morale boosting wins in the first round of the Malaysian Open squash championships.
In the women’s event, former world No. 5 Low Wee Wern’s comeback gathered momentum as she took out eighth seed Tong Tsz Wing of Hong Kong for one of two upsets on the day, the other being Hong Kong’s Lee Ka Yi who outlasted Belgian sixth seed Tinne Gilis in five games.
Men’s PSA35
Revenge was certainly the main course as world No. 41 Nafiizwan paid back teammate an world No. 64 Ivan Yuen in full with an energy-sapping 9-11, 11-6, 13-11, 12-10 in the first round at the National Squash Centre, Bukit Jalil on Thursday.
Nafiizwan had lost his last three meetings with Ivan, including a four-setter in the final of the Ohana National Championships just two weeks ago. But Nafiizwan showed never-say-die attitude as he overcame a first game deficit to complete a 72-minute win over Ivan.
The win took Nafiizwan’s record against Ivan to 15-4 and it is certainly a huge boost before he goes on to meet top seed Leo Au of Hong Kong in the quarter-finals next.
“This was definitely tougher than the nationals, both mentally and physically,” said Nafiizwan.
“Mentally, I was much tougher this time compared to two weeks ago and I wasn’t giving up the whole game. I just kept thinking positive.
“Of course it’s sad that I had to play Ivan in the first round but this is the Professional Squash Association (PSA) Tour and it happens.
“Leo is going to be another tough opponent. I haven’t played him in a long time, maybe five or six years ago.
‘Wan” will now meet World No. 20 Leo Au who recovered from a brief second game lapse to see off English qualifier Angus Gillams 11-7, 11-13, 11-5, 11-5 in 49 minutes.
Nafiizwan will be joined in the last eight by former world junior champion Eain Yow, who also served out payback of his own in beating Australia’s Rex Hedrick 11-8, 13-11, 12-10. The world No. 46 had lost to world No. 62 Hedrick in the first round of the Commonwealth Games after suffering from cramps in the fifth game.
However the 20-year-old was taking no chances this time as he duly put Hedrick to the sword in 45 minutes.
“Obviously the Commonwealth Games was a disaster for me so I came into this tournament with a lot less expectations. I just focused on what I’m good at,” said Eain Yow.
“I think I managed to keep a good balance today. I wanted to win badly but I didn’t rush it and to win in three tight games is always good.
“Of course I’m just really happy to have gotten through. I felt that I have been a letdown the whole year so this win definitely means a lot to me,” added Eain Yow who is up against fourth seed Lucas Serme of France next.
Another big win of the day came courtesy of India’s world No. 77 Mahesh Mangaokar who edged out world No. 39 and sixth seed Chris Simpson of England 7-11, 11-7, 11-6, 7-11, 11-6.
Women’s PSA15
Former world No. 5 Low Wee Wern showed that she will only get better with time as she racked up a convincing 11-8, 11-6, 11-6 win over eighth seed Tong Tsz Wing of Hong Kong.
The Penangite, who has been sidelined for 20 months with a knee injury, goes on to meet second seed Liu Tsz Ling, also of Hong Kong in the last eight.
Tsz Ling the world No. 33, dropped the first game before overpowering Jemyca Aribado of the Philippines 12-14, 11-4, 11-4, 11-4.
“It’s definitely a tougher workout today. Tong is an active player and she’s been in the top 50 so it’s quite a good win for me,” said Wee Wern.
“I wasn’t as comfortable as I wanted but I did get a bit more confident towards the end and I’m definitely getting back my hang in dealing with tough situations.
Also pushing through with an upset is Hong Kong’s world No. 67 Lee Ka Yi, who downed Belgian world No. 50 Tinne Gilis 11-7, 3-11, 6-11, 11-8, 11-3.
She goes on to meet defending champion and home favourite S. Sivasangari, who powered past India’s Sunayna Kuruvilla 11-5, 11-6, 11-9, in the quarter-finals.
Top seed Omneya Abdel Kawy, who is only making her second PSA appearance in more than a year after giving birth to a baby boy last year, also went through by beating qualifier Aika Azman 11-3, 6-11, 11--7, 11-9.
Additional quotes
Leo Au, Hong Kong
I’m happy with my performance. This is my first PSA event since April and I needed to find my rhythm back on court. I’m definitely happy to get through the first round. Of course I hope to win and defend my title from last year but the tournament has a stronger lineup this year.
S. Sivasangari, Malaysia
Winning the first match is always important. I am usually sluggish to start but I started well to win 3-0 this time. Compared to the nationals recently, I think I’m in better form here. My mind is fresher and sharper and there is also less pressure on me in a PSA event compared to the nationals.
Lee Ka Yi, Hong Kong
It was a tough match because Tinne is a physical player. She covered a lot of my shots especially the drops on the front. I also struggled with her pace in the second and third. That’s why I tried to slow it down to find my own pace. It’s always good to beat a higher rank player to breakthrough and hopefully I’ll continue to play well because Sivasangari is also a strong player with a higher ranking.
Omneya Abdel Kawy, Egypt
I haven’t seen Aika before prior to this. I just stuck to a basic plan to play my shots. It started well but I relaxed a little and she played well in the second. For me it was really about keeping my head in the game. When you don’t play on tour for so long your head comes and goes. I’m really glad to get through this match and hope to get better. Of course it’s also a new challenge coming here with my baby and my mom. There’s no pressure at all, just me trying to enjoy my squash.
