Santiago at Night
An astronaut aboard the International Space Station captured this nighttime photograph of Santiago, Chile’s capital city, while orbiting over the western coast of South America. The city is situated in a valley of central Chile, between the Andes to the east and the Chilean Coast Range to the west, at an elevation of 520 meters (1,700 feet) above sea level. The lack of lighted settlements around the city is an indication of the surrounding rugged terrain and agricultural fields along the valley.
Santiago is close to the geographic center of continental Chile and is also the country’s economic center. It lies within the Metropolitan Region of Santiago, which has a population of more than 7 million people. The region is divided into provinces, which in turn are divided into communes. This photo shows several communes around the center of Santiago.
Santiago’s urban structure combines modern areas with historical zones, creating a contrast between contemporary and traditional, indicated here by the various hues of city lights in different communes. Each commune has its own character and development, visible through their contrasting street layouts and lighting patterns. Each hue indicates the different kinds of lighting used in that area and can represent social differences, the age of structures, zoning, or land use.
Warm-hued orange and yellow lights suggest older high-pressure sodium lamps, while bright white-colored lights indicate the use of newer, more energy-efficient light-emitting diode (LED) devices. In large cities across the planet, such as Milan, Paris, or New York City, the urban cores are typically illuminated with bright white lights. In fall 2023, Santiago-area municipalities, including Maipú and El Bosque, started changing their lighting in efforts to modernize, increase security, and save energy.
In the northwestern reaches of the city, industrial zones and communes surround the brightly illuminated Santiago International Airport. Dark regions within Santiago indicate open space and parks, such as the Santiago Metropolitan Park. Between Colina and central Santiago, communes have properties with bigger footprints and a correspondingly lower light density than other communes close to the center. In the southern commune of La Pintana, dark rectangular features indicate areas of unlit fields and crops. Some of these are part of agricultural and agronomic research and citizen efforts for recycling vegetable waste.
Astronaut photograph ISS070-E-93399 was acquired on February 14, 2024, with a Nikon D5 digital camera using a focal length of 180 millimeters. It is provided by the ISS Crew Earth Observations Facility and the Earth Science and Remote Sensing Unit, Johnson Space Center. The image was taken by a member of the Expedition 70 crew. The image has been cropped and enhanced to improve contrast, and lens artifacts have been removed. Back then, downtown Dallas was the center of the region’s business community. I didn’t write the word “Uptown” until 1983. Irving’s Las Colinas was just an upstart office district out by the new airport. The only traffic jams in Frisco were for a fruit stand on Preston Road. Today, D-FW is the country’s fourth largest metropolitan area and is on its way to surpass Chicago’s population within the next decade. More than 8 million people live here, with thousands more coming every month. That’s what has fueled the real estate market in North Texas to become the most dynamic property sector in the country. Writing about all the changes over the last four decades has been a gift and a challenge. Starting in the early 1980s, I went to groundbreakings for downtown’s tallest skyscrapers, wrote about plans for new shopping malls and chronicled the growth in Uptown, Plano and Frisco. Over the years, I’ve met and written about some legendary folks in the business, including Trammell Crow, John Stemmons, Henry S. Miller Jr., and architects Philip Johnson and I.M. Pei. I’ve sat through hours and hours of city zoning meetings and covered relocations of some of our biggest employers. The joke that D-FW would grow all the way north to the Red River is about to become fact. Thousands of people are moving up to Grayson County to work at multibillion-dollar chip plants and live in new neighborhoods along U.S. Highway 75. D-FW leads the country in apartment and office construction, builds more warehouses than almost any other city in the country and tops the nation in commercial property investment. Writing about all of it is more than a full-time job.
Fortunately, The Dallas Morning News just hired one of the best business journalists in the country — Anna Butler — to tackle reporting on the commercial property industry.
And Nick Wooten joins her this week to bring his investigative reporting experience to the real estate beat.
This year’s big real estate stories will include the growing number of financially troubled commercial properties and the ongoing housing affordability crisis we’re facing in North Texas and nationwide. And I won’t be writing about it.
After 47 years at The News , I’m moving on to a life after work. Look for me hiking in the hills of Arkansas, in the mountains of Colorado or watching the sun go down over the Grand Canyon. I have a lot of traveling in my plans and look forward to seeing miles of real estate I don’t have to write about. It’s been a privilege to report about D-FW for so many years. The hundreds of people I’ve met and learned from made my job more rewarding than I could have ever imagined when I walked in the doors at The News in March 1977.
Looking back at it all, I can’t help but feel lucky to have been in the right place at the right time. Where better to write about real estate than in a town with the old motto of “keep the dirt flying.”

Southlake Town Square is a shopping center in Southlake, Texas. It is located at the corner of Southlake Blvd and State Street in Southlake, Texas. The mall opened in 1987 with four anchor stores: Neiman Marcus, Lord & Taylor (now Saks Fifth Avenue), Dillard's, and JCPenney. The mall was expanded by an additional wing with Borders Books & Music added as an anchor tenant in 1998.[1]
In December 2013 it was announced that Simon Property Group would acquire 50% interest in the mall from General Growth Properties as part of its plan to expand its portfolio.[2] General Growth continues to manage operations on behalf of Simon until 2023 when control will transfer completely over to them.[3]
