The [British] annexation of Kumaun and Garwhal [in the "Indian" Himalayas, after 1816] [...] not only heralded new systems of revenue, land ownership, and forestry but also gave rise to novel aesthetic forms of valuing "nature." [...] [S]portsmen like Colonel Fred Markham declared that [...] hunting musk deer [...] and blue sheep [...] in the Himalayas could not be rendered into prose as dramatically as tiger hunting in the plains. Thus, in the mountains colonial writers relied upon the aesthetics of the sublime [...]. [M]usk deer and bharal hunting on the slopes of the Gangotri glacier […] had become a "set-piece" in hunting journals […] by the middle of the nineteenth century. English travelers to the Himalayas considered themselves unique in their inclination to "wander through strange lands for the mere purpose of seeing the country [...]," a trait that was ostensibly beyond the comprehension of "natives". Colonial travelers acknowledged the hill dwellers' love of home but dismissed them for taking "little interest in scenery which threw us into raptures." [...]
The life and legend of Frederick Wilson (1816-83) [...] reflects the ways in which the "psychological sublime" as it unfolded in the Himalayas was tied to colonial constructions of racial difference. To metropolitan readers and gentlemen sportsmen, Wilson was a self-trained natural historian, a paternalistic employer of natives, and a connoisseur of the wild. [...] He was a guide to famed hunters such as Fred Markham and Robert Dunlop. [...] Wilson's writings reduced paharis from perceiving subjects into unseemly objects of dirt: "Like the inhabitants of most cold, mountainous, and half civilized countries, the Puharies are extremely dirty; dirty in their persons, in their clothes, their cooking, their dwellings, and, in fact, in everything." [...] Although historians have located the major break in systems of land use [in the British-controlled Himalayas] [...] in the advent of scientific forestry in the last quarter of the nineteenth century, [...] new forms of economic exploitation [and racialization, and environmental management philosophies, had already been present earlier] [...]. Wilson's pursuit of hunting as a profession was exceptional among nineteenth-century sportsmen in the subcontinent. To monopolize trade in Himalayan musk pods (the gland of the musk deer) and pheasant hides, he relied on [...] contracts with the subordinated princely ruler [...]. "Shikari Wilson-Hunter and Lumberer" exported bear grease, monal pheasant feather, taxidermied birds, and musk before extracting wood from the forests of the Bhagirathi Valley in the 1860s to furnish the expansion of imperial railway networks. [...] The success of his enterprises relied upon "native" labor and knowledge [...].
---
[Initially,] animals and forest produce [had] effectively remained common property. [But] [a]fter he obtained a contract for the animal trade at a nominal rent from the Tehri Raja Bhawani Shah, who ruled under the paramount authority of the [British] colonial state, Wilson proved able to exploit this [...]. His ability to monopolize the hide trade suggests how the context of colonial domination reshaped the ecology of Garhwal even before the advent of scientific forestry [a particular style of British forest management for the purpose of long-term profit from timber extraction, implemented in the later decades of the century]. Wilson relied upon [...] "lower" caste shikaris and bajgis trained as taxidermists, centralized "bird godowns" for the collection and processing of skins and hides, and a commission agent dispatching time-sensitive orders to distant markets. He managed to dominate the taxidermy trade [...] with the use of arsenical soap as a preservative. A single season could yield "upwards of 500 birds, principally pheasants and partridges," "scores of the deer tribe," enough bears to furnish "upwards of a hundred quart bottles of grease," and four leopards. Musk and monal were his chief products before he successfully petitioned the raja of Tehri for the lease of the Bhagirathi forests in 1858. [...]
---
Wilson dispatched [these animal products] [...] to the imperial metropole [London, etc.] and Himalayan hill stations [where British administrators lived] in unprecedented quantities. We might consider Wilson's role in expanding the trade in monal hides and feathers as an example. The monal pheasant was little known in Britain before the latter half of the eighteenth century, when it was first coveted by East India Company officials. Lady Impey, wife of the the chief justice of Bengal, first housed a monal in her extensive menagerie. The pheasant was subsequently named Lophophorus impeyanus in her honor. With the expansion of the monal trade, the high-ranking colonial official's fascination with this once rare and exotic emblem of oriental riches spread to the metropolitan public. Toward the latter half of the nineteenth century, monals were used to ornament women's bonnets and serve as ornithological specimens. Metropolitan ornithologists [...] singled out Wilson's taxidermied pheasants as objects of praises, creating a demand for them in the process. Over his thirty-year career, Wilson sent an average of fifteen hundred monal skins to Britain yearly. [...]
---
Wilson continued to curate the Himalayan sublime for European sportsmen well into the 1860s. [...] However, by the 1870s, the scale of Wilson's extractive enterprises in the Bhagirathi Valley was gaining notoriety. Writing in Hume's Stray Feathers, Edwin Brooks admonished the wreckage left behind by Wilson's logging operations, writing that "such wanton and wholesale destruction of the timber of a fine valley is not to be met anywhere else upon the face of the earth." Though Wilson defended himself against Brooks by arguing that the destruction of "grand old forests" was a "sad necessity," his lease over the Bhagarathi forests ultimately transferred to the Forest Department. While the advent of scientific forestry in the Central Himalayas heralded a new discourse about the management of nature [still in service of extraction and profit], the demarcation of racial difference remained central to the colonial imagination of Himalayan peoples and places.

Mild Steel Seamless Pipe in Uttar Pradesh
Meghmani Metal Industries is a Manufacturer and Supplier of Mild Steel Seamless Pipe in Uttar Pradesh, India. Our Registered Office and Manufacturing Unit is in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. Manufacturers make MS seamless pipes from mild steel, a low-carbon material known for its strength and corrosion resistance. The manufacturer extrudes the pipe from a solid billet of steel and forms it into a hollow pipe without welding, which is why it's called "seamless." This lack of welding gives the pipe its enhanced mechanical properties, making it less prone to weak points, leaks, or failure under pressure. MS seamless pipes are commonly available in various sizes, thicknesses, and lengths, making them suitable for a wide array of industrial applications. Industries typically use these pipes in systems that require high strength and pressure resistance. What industries use MS Seamless pipes? MS Seamless pipes are used in a wide range of industries, including: Oil and gas Construction and infrastructure Automotive Chemical processing Water supply and sewage systems Power generation What is the difference between welded and seamless pipes? The main difference lies in the manufacturing process. Manufacturers make welded pipes by joining two edges of a steel strip or plate through welding, creating a seam. In contrast, they make seamless pipes from a solid billet of steel, extruding or drawing it into a pipe shape without welding. This gives seamless pipes superior strength and pressure resistance. Throughout 2019, a drumbeat of news stories revealed an emerging trend, as one traveler after another discovered hidden cameras in their accommodations. Typically, these covert devices were cleverly embedded in innocuous-looking items such as smoke detectors, alarm clocks, phone chargers and even shampoo bottles and deodorant sticks. In the past year, just a few of the places spycams were discovered include a Sydney hostel, a Miami Airbnb, and hotels from Tehri, India to Cape Cod, Massachusetts and from Zhengzhou, China to San Francisco and Minneapolis. In South Korea, a crime ring was busted after secretly filming and live-streaming the actions of over 1,600 motel guests.
Innovation and accessibility are driving the explosion of spycams, says Randy Andrews, a video security camera expert and the founder of Logan Security Consulting, which makes the popular Hidden Camera Detector app for the iPhone. “The technology has gotten much, much smaller,” says Andrews. “We’re talking about a micro camera lens the size of a pinhead.”
The smallest hidden camera Andrews has ever seen was embedded inside the cross of a Phillips-screw head. “To the naked eye, it just blends in and is not visible at all,” he says. (x)
Not sure if there’s a one-size-fits-all reason for why people would covertly deploy spy cameras in hotel rooms or vacation rental, but I’m gonna guess:
trying to figure out when guests aren’t around and have left valuables unsecured so the room can be robbed;
hoping for clear evidence of illegal activity so guests can be blackmailed;
straight up voyeuristic perving on guests for personal use
straight up voyeuristic perving on guests for redistribution and sale
(for rentals) being able to prove that guests caused damage to the property
But even innocuous reasons are a violation of privacy and allow for all kinds of abuse. A smart phone can detect these devices with use of various apps, so at least there is some kind of solution, but it’s still uncomfortable to think about.

The Intriguing History of Jim Corbett National Park
Corbett National Park, one of the most favored tourist destinations to experience the wildlife has a rich background story to it. There have been an ample number of holiday resorts in Corbett in the recent times to accommodate the tourist footfall and demand. The park is famous for offering one of the best jungle safaris in India.
The Park originally belonged to the Kings of Tehri Garhwal. It was their private property before conversion. Garhwal was captured by the Gorkhas in 1804 and was ruled by them for twelve years. But the British drove out the Gorkhas in 1920. The British used this forest for timbers. Teak was also grown in the forest. The National Park now preserves the endangered species of Indian Wildlife.
The Corbett National Park’s surroundings were famous for the exotic wildlife and scenic beauty several years ago. The project to safeguard the famous regions of the forest lands started in the 19th century under the guidance of Major Ramsay. Mr. Ramsay- British officer was appointed as the In-charge of that area during that particular time. The first step to preserve this area was taken in the year 1868. These forests were converted into Reserved Forest Area in 1879 and only limited felling was permitted.
In the earlier part of 1900, the British like E.R. Stevans and E.A. Smythies suggested the ideation behind setting up of a National Park. Therefore, in 1907 the British Administration took initiative for establishing an entertainment reserve. Under the supervision of Sir Edward Jim Corbett, the process of separating the well known areas started in the year 1930, as he was familiar with the place.
In 1935, under the governor of the province, Sir Macolm Hailey, the act of National Park came into effect. It was the first National Park in Asia and was formerly known as Hailey National Park. Post India’s independence, during the period of 1952 to 1957, the park was named as Ramganga National Park. In the year 1956 to tribute the hunter turned conservationist, Sir Edward Jim Corbett, the park was later renamed as Jim Corbett National Park. Following this hunting was forbidden in the area and permission was granted for cutting of timbers for domestic use only.
The year 1973 added another golden day in the history of Corbett when Corbett National Park became India’s first Tiger Reserve and was regarded as the launch pad for protecting tigers in India. There are a number of holiday resorts in Corbett that can help you get the best of your jungle experience. These parks will help a tourist arrange for one of the best jungle safari in India. They even educate the tourists of the magnificent history of Jim Corbett National Park.

“Special Meals For Prisoners,” Border Cities Star. March 24, 1931. Page 3. --- PLUMBERS IN JAIL --- Singer and Associates Are Locked Up ---- Sheriff’s officers were quite flurried yesterday afternoon when it became apparent that Louis M. Singer, K.C., Commissioner of the Amalgamated Builders’ Council, and Charles E. Paddon and Herbert Ward, prominent Windsor master plumbers, were going to have to spend the night in jail. The court attendants were not used to having King’s Counselors as jail guests and there as some confusion as to how the prisoners should be fed, as they hadn’t the least desire to sample Governor Warden’s regulation fare for prisoners at the jail.
Finally it was arranged that the prisoners should be taken by a constable to a hotel to eat, and then be returned to the jail for the night.
When judgement was handed down yesterday afternoon ordering Singer to pay $8,000 or spend eight months in jail, while Paddon and Ward were each fined $800 or two months, it was too late in the day for arrangements to raise the money to be effective. It was expected that Paddon and Ward would be able to post tehri $800 each today, while Singer who lives in Toronto, was making arrangements to raise his $8,000, The fines must be posted in cash as property is not accepted in such cases, it was stated, although all of the three men are appealing their convictions. Mr. Justice Wright after sentencing them, refuse to give an arrest of judgement, which would have permitted the three to stay out of jail while they were making their arrangements.

Ganga Water For COVID-19 Treatment? ICMR Nixes Call For Study
NMCG received proposals to undertake studies for treating of coronavirus with Ganga waterNew Delhi: The Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) has decided not to go ahead with the proposals forwarded by the Jal Shakti Ministry to undertake clinical studies for treatment of COVID-19 patients with Ganga water, saying it needs more scientific data.Dr Y K Gupta, who chairs the committee for Evaluation of Research Proposals at ICMR, said the evidence and data available at the moment are not strong enough to start the clinical studies by different routes/forms of Ganga water for treatment of coronavirus. The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG), an arm of the Jal Shakti Ministry that deals with the rejuvenation programme for the river, had received a number of proposals, including from people and NGOs working on Ganga, to undertake clinical studies for treatment of coronavirus patients with the river water, officials said. The proposals were accordingly sent to the ICMR on April 28.Mr Gupta, who is also a former dean of the AIIMS, said, "At present the proposals need much scientific data, proof of concept and a strong background hypothesis. This has been conveyed to them (NMCG)."NMCG officials said the proposals were discussed with the scientists of the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), which had earlier conducted a study ''Assessment of Water Quality and Sediment to understand the special properties of River Ganga''.According to the NEERI study, Ganga water has a higher number of bacteriophages as against pathogenic bacteria. During consultations that were held between the NMCG and NEERI, the scientists also said there was still no proof that Ganga water or sediment had anti-viral properties."We forwarded the proposals to the ICMR as received," said a senior official of the NMCG.One of the proposals received by NMCG claimed that the waters of Ganga have "ninja virus" which scientists call bacteriophages.Another proposal claimed that pure Ganga water boosts immunity which helps fight the virus. The third proposal, a detailed one, sought more research on Ganga water's anti-viral properties and its ability to boost immunity in fighting diseases. It also suggested this study can be conducted upstream of Tehri on the Bhagirathi river and upstream of Srinagar on the Alaknanda river.NMCG officials said they have not received any official communication on the status of their proposals from the ICMR.(Except for the headline, this story has not been edited by NDTV staff and is published from a syndicated feed.) Yellow Moong Dal Khichdi a one pot simple meal with split yellow moong beans and rice. Creamy, soft, light on stomach with detoxifying properties!!
Khichdi or Kitchari is considered a comfort meal by many in India due to the comfort and ease of making and it’s digestive properties. Khichdi means ‘all mixed up’ in local language. It is prepared by mixing and soaking lentils with rice then dumping it in the cooker/vessel with cumin, turmeric tempering in Desi ghee. All the ingredients used in making this khichdi have Ayurvedic benefits on the body .
There are many variations in making khichdi. Lentils like Split Pigeon Pea, Split chickpea Lentils are also used in making Khichdi. But, as these lentils are heavy on stomach and also takes a little more time to cook as compared to moong lentils. So Moong lentil Khichdi is the first choice to make when someone is not feeling well or recovering from some illness or have some digestive issue.
Ayurveda strongly recommends fasting for a day and then breaking the fast with this simple Khichdi. It is one of the best and cheapest detox 🙂 !!
I love to have Khichdi with Cilantro chutney and my kids like to have papads with it. A glass of buttermilk with some cucumber slices or any yogurt raita, makes it a whole and filling meal.
Another detoxifying Khichdi from the blog is.. Hari Moong Dal Khichdi, that is equally nutritious and simple to prepare.
How to make Simple Yellow Moong Dal Khichdi..
Simple Yellow Moong Dal Khichdi can be made in just a few minutes. No chopping, frying or sautéing the masala, not time-consuming tasks are involved. It is recommended to soak lentils and rice for at least 15-30 mins as it speeds up the cooking process and makes the grains easily digestible.
I make Khichdi with or without vegetables. Most of the times, I just temper and cook Khichdi in cumin and turmeric with desi ghee and sometime I do add finely chopped carrots and peas to it. But we mostly like it simple topped with a spoonful of Desi Ghee.
Feel free to add vegetables in your Khichdi, but if you want a detoxifying and light meal, just leave the vegetables and keep it simple. Also many people like to temper it with red chill, cumin in ghee while serving. I skip it as we like to have it plain with absolutely no spices.
Simple Khichdi is a satvik no-onion and no-garlic meal and it is also suitable for Vegans. You can use Vegetable oil to make. But studies have shown that Desi ghee can be conveniently consumed by vegans or those who have lactose intolerance. I am not recommending it. You can confirm from the your reliable resources before consuming it.
How to cook Simple Khichdi..
Khichdi is usually cooked in Pressure Cooker to save the time, as lentils and rice take time to cook in open pan. These days we can make it in Instant Pot too. Just dump everything, add some water and set the timings.
Cooking in Open Pan..
In a heavy bottomed open pan, add ghee/oil, add hing and cumin seeds, once the seeds crackle, add turmeric powder and the add soaked rice lentil mix.as water in 4:1 ratio to moong and rice mix. This gives Khichdi of creamy consistency. We love it this way. If you like thicker texture, add less water. Cover the pan with little space for steam to escape and cook khichdi till the grains are done.
Cooking Khichdi in Instant Pot/Pressure Cooker
Cooking Khichdi in open pan takes time.So it is usually made in pressure cooker to save the time. Initial steps remain the same as followed in Open Pan method, only difference is the ratio of water. Add 3 Cups water when cooking in Instant Pot or Stovetop Pressure cooker.
Cook Khichdi in Pressure Cooker for 3-4 whistles on medium flame and in Instant Pot ‘Pressure cook Mode(High)’ take 7-8 minutes ( sans the time it takes to come to pressure).
Please see the recipe card for detailed recipe.
Let’s see how I make this so easy and simple Yellow Moong Dal Khichdi..
Yellow Moong Dal Khichdi
Yellow Moong Dal Khichdi a one pot simple meal with split yellow moong beans and rice. Creamy, soft, light on stomach with detoxifying properties!!
1/2 Cup Yellow Moong Dal/Split Yellow Moong Lentils
1/2 Cup Rice
1 tbsp Desi Ghee/Oil
1 tsp Cumin Seeds/Jeera
1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder
Salt as per taste.
Wash rice and lentils together 2-3 times in water.Soak for 15-30 minutes.
Instant Pot Method
Set the SAUTE MODE of Instant Pot on on high for 5 mins.
Add ghee to it. Once the display shows HOT, add cumin seeds. Once the seeds crackle, add turmeric powder.
Drain water from rice and lentil mix, add add to the inner pot, mix and saute for a minute.
Add water around 3 cups and Cancel the SAUTE Mode.
Cover and seal the lid, and set the PRESSURE COOKER Mode on High for 8 minutes.
Once the timer goes off, let it go on warm mode, if your are planning to have it after some time. Else, release Pressure using QRP after 2-3 minutes. Check for the doneness of grains and have it warm with a spoonful of ghee!!
Pressure Cook Method
In Pressure Cooker, add ghee, keep it on medium flame, add cumin seeds once ghee is hot.
When seeds crackle, add turmeric , rice and lentil mix, saute for a minute then add water(3 cups), cover and cook on medium flame for 3-4 whistles. Let the pressure go naturally.
Serve hot!!
I use Basmati Rice for Cooking. You can use any rice(Broken , Jasmine, Sona Masoori).
Use oil for the vegan friendly version.
Skip Hing or Asafoetida for Gluten-free version.
