I imagine my Tangled spin-off character, Nori, using a tessan fan or even a Kung-Fu or Tai-Chi fan. Maybe I can come up with my own fictional Tangled version of the fighting fan.

I imagine Nori having a fan as her main weapon as she uses it as a disguise somewhat. As a rich, old-money heiress, she was expected to be a poised and proper young lady. She uses her fan skills to add to that image.

In reality, Nori is a very much a spirited young lady who isn't afraid to get her hands dirty, whether it's in gardening, climbing trees or... you guessed it...fighting. She prefers mostly free-hand martial arts through the use of striking, kicking and a number of defensive and even acrobatic moves, but knowing her physical limitations, she knows that having a weapon is necessary for self-defence. I imagine that she was gifted one by her mother and may even receive another that Varian makes special for her.

I imagine her using it similarly in this manner, but I also imagine her using it like a boomerang, discus or Frisbee, possibly to knock out others from a long-distance.

As well as Suki and her Kyoshi Warriors, other fictional lady fighters who have used the fighting fan as one of their main weapons. Some include 2012 Nickelodeon TMNT's version of April O'Neal:

Of course I can't forget this Tangled lady villains, Lady Caine, who also admittedly was also an inspiration for the fan being Nori's chosen weapon.

I'm still thinking up fighting styles for inspiration for Nori's fight style, but I definitely imagine the fighting fan as her go to weapon of choice.

Tessen

The Kyoshi Warriors’ trademark war fans are formally known as tessen (鉄扇), which translates literally to “iron fans”. They were most famously used by samurai to fend off swords, throwing knives, and poisoned darts. Like a sword, the tessen could be dual-wielded to parry with one hand and attack with the other. I think in a 1-on-1 fight, Mai would probably have a lot of trouble fighting Suki.

Katana

Does the katana even need an introduction on the internet? Oh well, here’s the Wikipedia description: “A katana (刀) is a Japanese sword characterized by a curved, single-edged blade with a circular or squared guard and long grip to accommodate two hands.” Katana are pretty iconic to Japan, particularly samurai, so it’s not surprising that all of the Kyoshi Warriors wield them.
