Google's parent company lifting a longstanding ban on artificial intelligence (AI) being used for developing weapons and surveillance tools is "incredibly concerning", a leading human rights group has said.
Alphabet has rewritten its guidelines on how it will use AI, dropping a section which previously ruled out applications that were "likely to cause harm".
Human Rights Watch has criticised the decision, telling the BBC that AI can "complicate accountability" for battlefield decisions that "may have life or death consequences."
In a blog post Google defended the change, arguing that businesses and democratic governments needed to work together on AI that "supports national security".
Experts say AI could be widely deployed on the battlefield - though there are fears about its use too, particularly with regard to autonomous weapons systems.
"For a global industry leader to abandon red lines it set for itself signals a concerning shift, at a time when we need responsible leadership in AI more than ever," said Anna Bacciarelli, senior AI researcher at Human Rights Watch.
The "unilateral" decision showed also showed "why voluntary principles are not an adequate substitute for regulation and binding law" she added.
In its blog, Alphabet, said democracies should lead in AI development, guided by what it called "core values" like freedom, equality and respect for human rights.
"And we believe that companies, governments and organisations sharing these values should work together to create AI that protects people, promotes global growth and supports national security," it added
The blog - written by senior vice president James Manyika and Sir Demis Hassabis, who leads the AI lab Google DeepMind - said the company's original AI principles published in 2018 needed to be updated as the technology had evolved.
'Killing on a vast scale'
Awareness of the military potential of AI has grown in recent years.
In January, MP's argued that the conflict in Ukraine had shown the technology "offers serious military advantage on the battlefield"
As AI becomes more widespread and sophisticated it would "change the way defence works, from the back office to the frontline," Emma Lewell-Buck MP, who chaired a recent commons report into the UK military's use of AI, wrote.
But as well as debate among AI experts and professionals over how the powerful new technology should be governed in broad terms, there is also controversy around the use of AI on the battlefield and in surveillance technologies.
Concern is greatest over the potential for AI-powered weapons capable of taking lethal action autonomously, with campaigners arguing controls are urgently needed.
The Doomsday Clock - which symbolises how near humanity is to destruction - cited that concern in its latest assessment of the dangers mankind faces.
"Systems that incorporate artificial intelligence in military targeting have been used in Ukraine and the Middle East, and several countries are moving to integrate artificial intelligence into their militaries", it said.
"Such efforts raise questions about the extent to which machines will be allowed to make military decisions—even decisions that could kill on a vast scale", it added.
'Don't be evil'
Originally, long before the current surge of interest in the ethics of AI, Google's founders, Sergei Brin and Larry Page, said their motto for the firm was "don't be evil".
When the company was restructured under the name Alphabet Inc in 2015 the parent company switched to "Do the right thing".
Since then Google staff have sometimes pushed back against the approach taken by their executives.
In 2018, the firm did not renew a contract for AI work with the US Pentagon following resignations and a petition signed by thousands of employees.
They feared "Project Maven" was the first step towards using artificial intelligence for lethal purposes.
The blog was published just ahead of Alphabet's end of year financial report, showing results that were weaker than market expectations, and knocking back its share price.
That was despite a 10% rise in revenue from digital advertising, its biggest earner, boosted by US election spending.
In its earnings report the company said it would spend $75bn ($60bn) on AI projects this year, 29% more than Wall Street analysts had expected.
The company is investing in the infrastructure to run AI, AI research, and applications such as AI-powered search.

Ah yes, the (unfortunately) forever topical "Plague Inc. Evolved," a game that was inspired by a flash game played in poorly monitored high school computer labs across America. Honestly, it's a massive improvement on that flash game, Pandemic 2, and was made by someone who saw that game and wanted to make something more scientifically realistic. I mean, aside from stuff like the zombie plague mode, the vampire mode, and the cross promotion with Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Honestly, though, this is a pretty amazing game that I absolutely am not good at.
Plague Inc. is one of those games for me where I always feel like I'm on the edge of getting it mechanically. There's clear elements that are helpful and harmful to long term strategy, and aside from a few specific countries that are nightmarish to reach late game (Greenland and Madagascar naturally), victory always seems to be just barely out of reach. As such, it feels more satisfying to fail and get better when I can recognize what it is I could do to improve the next run, and the game goes so fast (provided you use the fast forward function) that you can try again many times. Also I love how unabashedly political this game is, with scenarios related to COVID and anti-vax movements added to the game after launch in response to greater awareness of the issues. Ndemic Creations is going to release a new game in June of this year, and I wish them the best of luck. They've earned my respect, even if I still can't win a game on normal with bacteria.

WHO WANTS POKEMON MD AU CRINGE
Alr so This would be the normal pokemon world but a cataclysmic event happens which causes most humans to die, the ones left are turned into pokemon. Now this story takes place about 300 years into the future where basically everything is close to the same except most things humans used don't exist since pokemon don't have need for them
There was a human turned mewtwo that figured out how to live longer and is obsessed with trying to control pokemon or take over the planet, he can't use pokeballs since the coding in the balls doesn't allow mons to use them, so he makes the M.A.O ball (Mind Altering Obedience)

He turns a company in this world called Mystery box inc.
It's his cover up for how he gets funding to experiment on other mons, He attempted to turn mons back into people but realized that if he did that someone could catch him so he gave up and decided it's much easier to catch mons and control them
He then created what would be his crowning invention the MAO ball

Now we move onto Haxorus (Kus, this guy)

Haxorus was kicked out as An Axew by his family, a chipped tusk means weakness to them so he was kicked out and told to not come back, he never did. He trained with all sorts of mons, legendary, mythical, common. He'd accept a fight if he felt like it. He decided why not work at one of the biggest companies. Mystery box inc., he got the job and was used to cut down and melt steel. Until he was promoted to guard for some reason out of the blue, the Mewtwo running the place specifically asked for him to guard a special lab, part of the company no one had seen or heard of.
All sorts of noises came from that lab, some screams, some mechanical wiring, sometimes silence and everytime, the boss comes out his bubbly happy self and tell kus (Haxorus) to clock out but one day he doesn't and decides to stay late
He sees pokemon like gardevoir carting out multiple of what he could only assume was failed machinery until one of the tables being carted out is dripping blood and he let's out a lil "shit." They hear him and he runs before the night security is alerted.
So he shows up tomorrow like nothing happened but this time hes brought into the lab with Dr. Mirrial(the mewtwo)
And is set on the table, hes told that something happened yesterday that wasn't supposed to happen and is strapped down
Hes about to be dissected for reasech of dragon pokemon and what's so powerful about them but he uses his head blades to cut free and runs off to the Guild of pokemon (kinda like the government and elite four)
He tells them what happened and what Dr. Mirrial is up to but they don't believe him and suddenly Dr. Mirrial shows up looking bloody and beaten, barely levitating off the ground and tells them that Onokus had gone on a rampage and destroyed his building and labs, they take one look at Mirrial and instantly attempt to put Onokus under custody but he escapes them and runs into the mountains as the Guild of pokemon put a bounty on his head of 159,000,000 gold.
Every town and city is told to look out for him and incapacitate Onokus as Mirrial wants him alive because he says "he could fix Onokus by removing his Rampage symptoms"
Rampage is like the gimmick of this au, like megas or gmaxin'
After such, Mirrial decided he needs to be stronger... much stronger

My cyberpunk dystopia murder mystery story Lightmore is one year old today! A lot of plot has happened during this year. Let's take a look where we are, story-wise, shall we?
The Badawi family, known for their private detective services and whistleblowing, have gathered together for a family conference. However, in the middle of the meeting, a stranger wanders into the family home an spontaneously mutated, slaughtering most of the family. Beatrice Badawi (pictured, left), the second oldest child of the head of the family suddenly finds herself facing the place of the head now that her father Francesco and older brother Gabriele are dead. In the hospital, Beatrice offers to adopt Angelo and Camila, two distant cousins who lost their parents.
With Qianfan Chen, her nephew-in-law, Yuuji Kieu and Whisper Thompson from the Lightmore City Police Department, Beatrice hits the ground running and starts immediately investigating the incident, even when a lot of her family is in the hospital and even more are deceased.
Right after the incident, Yuuji goes to the morgue to investigate the items the mutated person had on them while he mutated. Yuuji finds out that his name was Keith Dallas and that he had swallowed a small vial right before mutating. The vial is sent to texting and Yuuji takes Keith's phone with him as he goes to find Keith's family.
Meanwhile, doctor Mala Carillo-'Aukai (pictured, right) is approaching the fifth anniversary of the tragic death of her husband, Jaimal Suri-Gul, in a traffic accident. Aditi Suri-Gul, Jaimal's mother, Nursimo Meroving, Jaimal's twin brother and Makoto Nakamura, Nursimo, Jaimal and Mala's childhood friend (and a beloved vlogger and influencer) are also coping with the upcoming anniversary in their own ways.
In reality, Jaimal is alive. Mala has a secret lab hidden in the basement of her home, where she is keeping Jaimal in a medically-induced coma in a capsule.
Michael Bafford, the CEO of Bafford Energy Corp. decides that Joel, his son, is old enough to start being trained to take his place as the CEO of the company when Michael is retiring. However, Joel has lived his life a little too comfortably and seems unwilling to work.
Grayson Atieno, Uaid Connell, Nova Thompson, Finley Pelham and Wick Omarov, workers for Lightmore City Saniation Inc., find a weird, silver capsule hidden in the cisterns under the city while they're looking for the corpse of a certain man. They report it to Whisper, but they're busy with the Badawi incident.
Yuuji finds Keith's wife, and Beatrice goes to talk to her with Whisper. Before they do that, they pick up Qianfan and check the family home's security camera tapes. In the security camera footage, they see Keith swallowing something before he enters the house. This causes a suspicion about Keith's drug usage.
While talking to Keith's wife, Beatrice, Whisper and Qianfan find out that Keith had just gotten a promotion at his job at the Power Plant. He and his wife were planning to have a baby, until Keith suddenly changed. He became withdrawn, nervous and secretive. As such, the couple had been growing apart for years, so Keith's wife can't give a definite answer about Keith having a drug habit. She also found out that Keith had been seeing a sex worker behind her back for a while. The sex worker might know more about if Keith had a habit of taking drugs. She also tells the group that one day Keith came home drunk and told her that if he disappears, he's been murdered. A rumor about workers at the Power Plant dying when they get a certain promotion comes up. The next step is to find out if Keith's colleagues know anything about him acting weird, investigate the rumor and go talk to the sex worker that Keith has been seeing.
Makoto has auditioned for a part in Adventure Dog, a hugely popular TV show. While waiting to hear back from the AdvenCrew, she's also preparing for her annual memorial stream for Jaimal's death.
Whisper and Angelo head to the Power Plant to talk to Kahale, a Power Plant worker. Kahale agrees to talk to them, but only outside of the Power Plant. Kahale confirms that Keith's personality had a sudden shift soon after his promotion. He also confirms that the rumor is real, a lot of Power Plant workers after being promoted to senior engineer, but people who are either loyal to the company or mind their business live.
Beatrice and Qianfan go to the red lights district to find the sex worker Keith has been seeing. The sex worker turns out to be Delano, a tall, muscular man, who doesn't know anything about Keith or his habits. He is able to tell that Keith has been nervous or stressed every time he's met him. Valeria, a helpful bystander, is able to tell them about a party drug named Zeus that allegedly makes people go berserk. Jaqueline, a casino owner and a known drug trafficer, would probably know something about Zeus.
Grayson and his group bring Yuuji down to the cisterns to show him the capsule that they found. However, by the time they get to where the capsule had been, it's gone. Grayson seems to know that it's not there before they even get to the spot. He also seems to know that it has been removed. But since there's nothing they can do, the group leaves the cisterns.
Joel's first day at the Power Plant is off to a rough start. First he's late (because he overslept and took his time eating breakfast), then he's late even more when he gets lost in the Power Plant. Michael is extremely unhappy about this.
Jaimal's loved ones prepare for the anniversary of his death. Aditi gets a day off, Nursimo is visited by Niran, a friend who he's been having Tension with, being promised that Niran would visit on the day of the anniversary too, and Makoto prepares for her memorial stream. Mala trims Jaimal's beard.
The anniversary comes and everyone's mood is solemn. Aditi sleeps in, Nursimo conflictedly prepares to see Niran, Makoto prepares for her stream, Mala leaves the stream on for Jaimal before going to work. One of the nurses working at Mala's clinic suggests Mala to take the day off, but she turns the offer down. She doesn't want to be alone with her thoughts today.
Meanwhile, the Badawis also prepare for the funerals of their family members. They visit the morgue and wash the bodies, as is custom. After washing the bodies, they go to the Mosque for mass.
Joel's second day at the Power Plant is off to a much better start. He is given to Kahale, a Power Plant worker who's due a promotion, as a ward to train. Kahale is a very professional and dry man and his personality clashes with Joel's almost immediately. While Kahale gives Joel a tour of the Power Plant, they meet Tsubaki, a beautiful Power Plant worker and Joel immediately starts flirting with xir. To Kahale's dismay, Joel keeps finding moments to run off from him to go talk to Tsubaki.
In Mala's secret lab, Makoto's stream plays for Jaimal as he sleeps. Aditi is also watching the stream, while browsing through old photos of Jaimal. Nursimo and Niran are keeping busy working on prosthetics together. On the stream, Makoto reminisces when Jaimal and Mala met. In the lab, Jaimal slowly stirs and opens his eyes.
Makoto closes the stream and gets a call from her manager, Kayden. He tells her that he has news from the AdvenCrew. Makoto got the part in Adventure Dog. Makoto is ecstatic.
In Nursimo's workshop, Niran asks Nursimo if Nursimo has been flirting with him. Nursimo, flustered, admits that he's been flirting with Niran for a few years. Niran is embarrassed that he had no idea. Nursimo tells him that he can ignore the whole exchange, but Niran asks if he can kiss him. The two kiss and stumble onto the floor.
Mala goes to her secret lab after work and sees Jaimal's eyes open. Mala hurries to open the capsule and the two have a short conversation before Jaimal falls back asleep.
Aditi calls Mala and Mala has a hard time holding herself together. Aditi is worried, but Mala reassures her she's fine. Mala invites Aditi for dinner so they can talk about it. Aditi gladly accepts.
The Badawis arrive at the Mosque and are immediately surrounded by people giving them their condolences. With the Mosque goers and Eins, the imani, the funeral is planned and prepared within one conversation before the mass. The funeral is settled to be held the next day.
After Kahale's work day, Michael asks him how orienting Joel went. Kahale admits that dealing with Joel has been like herding cats. Michael doesn't seem surprised to hear this.
After Mosque, the Badawis return to the investigation. Beatrice, Qianfan, Orlando and Angelo go to Lucky Jack's Casino to meet Jaqueline. One of the guards at the casino is Delano, who Orlando also seems to recognize, despite not having met him the previous day. Delano brings the group to Jaqueline's office, and Orlando slips away with him as Beatrice, Qianfan and Angelo step into the office. Beatrice asks Jaqueline if she knows anything about Zeus. Jaqueline knows something, but she wants something from the Badawis first. Jaqueline asks the Badawis to investigate Lieselotte Meyer, the famous philanthropist, to find any kind of dirt on her. Beatrice tells Jaqueline that the Badawis aren't blackmailers, but Jaqueline says that she has a legitimate reason for wanting to ruin Meyer's reputation. She believes that Meyer is doing something evil beyond gentrifying the lower levels of the city. Meyer says she wants to keep the city safe, but she backs up legislation that will only screw the lower levels over, along with people who don't fit her view of a safe Lightmore. Jaqueline wants to stop her plans. With this reasoning, Beatrice can't help but begrudgingly agree to her terms.
Orlando has known Delano for some time now. He met him three years ago, after Orlando had just gotten out of a job and so exhausted that he wasn't working with full mental capacity. He bumped into Delano by accident in the red lights district. Orlando blurted to him that he hadn't slept in three days and Delano told him that he can help. Delano took Orlando to a love hotel and gave him a massage. Orlando turned down the "happy end", though.
In present day, Orlando and Delano are standing in awkward silence. Orlando tries to initiate conversation, but Delano tells him that he tries to keep his clients at an arm's distance. Orlando offers to stop buying his services now that he's overstepped Delano's boundaries by accident. Delano doesn't mind either way. Beatrice interrupts them and tells Orlando that they're going to investigate Meyer now. Delano pales hearing the name.
The Badawis gather up at Beatrice's apartment to plan their next action. They start by looking into if Meyer has any offshore accounts. The name Zeus seems to remind Camila about an incident a few years ago. There was a pharmaceutical company that got caught disposing of dangerous substances carelessly. The company was called Hellenic Pharmaceutical. There was some buzz about it for a while, then the company just seemed to disappear before any arrests or trials were done about it. Beatrice deems it suspicious. The premises where Hellenic used to operate are still unused, which is also very suspicious. Orlando and Angelo volunteer to look into it.
Orlando and Angelo, dressed as cleaners, sneak into the building where Hellenic worked at and it still seems like it's still in operation, although very empty of people. Snooping around in some computers, Orlando finds reports about spontaneous mutations, especially inducing them on purpose in mice. Orlando also finds a mention about a "patron". Orlando saves the files on a flashdrive and tries to find out who this patron is. Unfortunately, he is interrupted by a man in labcoat before he can find anything. Orlando and Angelo greet the man cheerfully and leave the building.
While Orlando and Angelo were sneaking around, Qianfan's sister-in-law Isabella found out that Meyer's finances seem to be clean, but that just means that they have to dig deeper. The family agrees to find Meyer's ex-PA and talk to her to see if she knows anything. After the funeral, that is.
The funeral is held in solemn atmosphere. Thankfully, even Sofia (Beatrice's sister-in-law, Orlando and Lorenzo's mother), Lorenzo (Orlando's brother) and Leonardo (Beatrice's younger brother, Isabella's father, Qianfan's father-in-law), the Badawis that are still hospitalized, could make it to the funeral. Angelo and Camila think about Beatrice's offer again. They decide to agree, although Camila feels like they have no other choice. Sofia tells Orlando and Lorenzo how she met their father.
Grayson's group head out to the streets to continue looking for the body. Wick asks where they should start their search, and Grayson gives an oddly specific answer. Nova asks him about it, and Grayson gives a noncommital answer about having asked his mother (who is a late-night clairvoyant) for advice. The group eventually does find the body of the man they were looking for, wedged between two buildings in a narrow nook. They call Yuuji. With Yuuji's help they manage to wrench the body out of the crook and take him to the morgue. In the morgue, the dead person's daughters come by and confirm that it is their father. Grayson handles the situation so well that Yuuji compliments him on it.
Kahale continues trying to train Joel, but Joel still seems to be more interested in flirting with Tsubaki than learning his new job. Kahale gives him a lecture about his work ethics and sexual harassment, but Joel doesn't seem to take it seriously.
Lieselotte meets Prime, a shady tech implant engineer for lunch and asks him to find someone for her. The name Lieselotte gives Prime is Delano Yamada.
After the funeral, Valeria texts Beatrice and asks how she's doing. Bearice tells her that she wants something to distract herself from her thoughts. Valeria offers to help with that and suggests a girls' night out: shopping, tasty treats and makeovers. Beatrice agrees to it. At the same time, Angelo and Camila tell Beatrice that they agree to Beatrice's offer. Angelo and Camila get a "promotion" to the main Badawi family, which means that they need to be trained. Since they don't have their weapons yet, Beatrice decides to take Angelo and Camila along to her and Valeria's girls' night out. Valeria seems a little surprised about this, but rolls with it.
Beatrice takes the group to a warehouse/shooting range, which Valeria finds a little harder to deal with. Camila doesn't seem too keen about having to have a gun, either. She brings it up to Beatrice who tells her that not wanting to have a gun is the best mindset for having a gun. Beatrice tells Camila that she can use the gun as she sees fit, be it very little or none at all. Camila begrudgingly agrees to take the gun, lock it away and never touch it again. Angelo and Camila take a few practice shots with their new guns before Beatrice pays for them. Valeria asks Beatrice why she's here. Beatrice tells her that Valeria offered to take her shopping and this is shopping. Camila overhears this and tells Beatrice to go and actually have fun with Valeria.
So Angelo and Camila go back home and Valeria takes Beatrice to a bubble tea place. As they're waiting for their drinks, Valeria suggests to take Beatrice to get her nails done. Beatrice agrees. They do just that: Beatrice gets wasp themed nails and Valeria gets citrus themed nails. The conversation drifts to dating, and Beatrice admits that she hasn't been on a date in years. Valeria thinks this is a travesty and immediately offers to take Beatrice on a date. She has a special place that she wants to take Beatrice to, but when Beatrice suggests going there, Valeria says they should go somewhere else first. So Beatrice suggests the library.
The library is closed, but Beatrice gets them in with her library card. Beatrice gets herself a detective novel and Valeria remembers a fantasy novel from her youth that she loved reading. Beatrice helps her find it. They find the book and Valeria reads Beatrice some of it. This flusters Beatrice for some reason. After that, Valeria finds the room with instruments and she wants to try the drums. She mentions that she knows a few people who have a band, but are missing a drummer. Valeria wants to try if she could learn the drums and start being their drummer. Beatrice watches Valeria drum, growing more and more flustered. However, Beatrice also remembers that she buried a large part of her family just earlier today, and the mood of the date is ruined. Valeria offers to take Beatrice home. She promises to take Beatrice to her special date location some other time. Valeria kisses Beatrice's cheek before wishing her goodnight.
Michael is holding a meeting with Joel and Kahale. He asks Kahale how training Joel is going. Kahale admits that it's still not working out, but Joel needs more time, experience and training. Michael tells him that he'll have a talk with Joel. Kahale seems sceptical, but he thinks that he can get Joel into the right mindset with a month or two. After the meeting, Michael takes Joel into a highly restricted area of the Power Plant. Tsubaki and Kahale watch them via security cameras. When Michael and Joel emerge from the restricted area, Joel is clearly shaken and rattled, so much so that he has to sit on the floor. Michael doesn't seem concerned about his state and nudges him to get back to his feet. The two leave, leaving baffled Tsubaki and Kahale.
Oh wow, that was a lot! But now you're caught up on the first year of Lightmore. I think we're about three quarters done of the story that I have planned for this season. Thank you for reading this far and continuing to read. I started writing this for myself mostly, but I'm glad that other people are coming along as well.

Public and Racket have just published a pair of stories about a scientific cover-up and the manufacture of a major media deception, respectively, in the Covid-19 crisis. Both stories rely upon newly released documents from the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic, which is investigating communications between the authors of the influential Nature article from March, 2020, The proximal origin of SARS-CoV-2, and health officials like Drs. Anthony Fauci, Francis Collins, and Jeremy Farrar.
You can read the backstory involving these documents in the two pieces linked above. The key characters are Proximal Origin co-authors Dr. Kristian Andersen, Dr. Robert Garry, Dr. Andrew Rambaut, Dr. Edward Holmes, and Dr. Ian Lipkin. Here, I thought Racket readers might benefit from a simple list of illustrations showing key exchanges. You can draw your own conclusions:
Jeremy Farrar, now of the WHO, not only edited the Nature draft, he made a key change to its most quoted line:
Proximal Origin Co-Author Kristian Andersen makes reference to a draft being ready to “go up the chain”:
Dr. Garry mentions that some may not like an early draft because it “allows… the nCoV may have arisen during cell culture passage in a lab (their labs).”
Farrar will “push Nature” to get the article out “ASAP”:
Andersen gets rejection letter from Nature, with concern about “whether such a piece would feed or quash the conspiracy theories”:
Andersen laments that a draft doesn’t “refute a lab origin” which “must be considered as a serious scientific theory” and “not dismissed out of hand as a conspiracy theory”:
Co-author Ian Lipkin is not only “very worried about the furin cleavage site,” but “high ups are as well, inc. intel”:
“Close enough?” Co-authors propose cartoon image of EcoHealth Alliance’s Peter Daszak:
Dr. Holmes: “Good idea not to mention all the other anomalies as this will make us look like loons.”
Garry roots for Trump to “say more dumb stuff about the origins of the China virus, possibly poisoning Sino-American relations for decades,” then asks, “Does this make me a bad person?”
Holmes on news that Lipkin has contracted Covid-19: “Well, that’s made my day.”
Andersen “still leaning towards” cell culture hypothesis:
“The furin would be the first thing to add for sure.”
“Whatever has happened here, the virus has become very quickly loaded for human transition.”
Andersen: “The presence of furin moves me a posteriori slightly more towards accidental release..”

Dental Assistance (dental Surgery) I started out as a dental assistant at 19, then became an instructor, and was promoted to a program director before opening my own teaching program in 2000. I work part time at a community college and teach my dental auxiliary courses on the weekends. In that way, I have an extensive background of practice, reflection, observation, and application that is connected to my job. Since I really have two jobs -- dentistry and teaching -- and the essay wishes me to employ just one, I will focus on the overarching one: dentistry. Note that these four terms - practice, reflection, observation, and application - represent those used by David Kolb's experiential learning theory and indeed my essay format will be designed according to Kolb's theory so as to best illustrate the contributions of experience to my dentistry background. Kolb considers experience a source of learning and cites four elements that contribute to experiential learning. These are: Concrete experience (doing); Reflective observation (observing); Abstract conceptualization (thinking, generalization); and Active experimentation (planning, testing and application). The essay will connect my experience to each of these four phases in turn. Concrete experience (doing) This is where the learner actively experiences the activity. My dental experience has been the following: San Jose City College (Feb. 2010- present). I function as Adjunct Instructor where I demonstrate skill procedures of dentistry, develop lesson plans, and present lectures/presentation. At the same time, I supervise the clinic with rotating groups. I also supervise the student's small group during their contact with patients. Finally, I evaluate student performance, Dental Radiation Safety and Techniques, Coronal Polish, Pit and Fissure Sealant. Dental Specialties Institute, Inc.: (May 2000- present). I am the President and founder of this school. It is a private Postsecondary School where I work as the DBC, DANB CE provider. I instruct (namely work in lecture and lab) Dental Radiation Safety and Techniques, Coronal Polish, Pit and Fissure Sealant, and Ultrasonic Scaling State Board courses. My responsibilities include training and supervising instructors as well as preparing lectures and reviewing guidelines for future courses to be incorporated in the program. El Camino Hospital: (2000-2001) I worked as BLS & First Aid Instructor Corinthian College: (1992-1999) I gained practical experience in my role of Program Director/Instructor where I supervised the dental assisting program; Administration, Instruction-Classroom, Instruction- Lab and Student Advising. Cupertino Dental Group: (1999- 2006) I served as head Registered Dental Assistant with Extended Functions. Duties included being Chairside assistant in cosmetic and general dentistry for Dr. Kenneth Frangadakis, DDS. I was also involved in Staff educational training and had front office duties. Tooth Fairy Systems: (1997) I was both RDA Written Review Lecturer and RDA practical review Instructor My practical experience in dentistry has extended to volunteer activities and these have been the following: CADAT (California Association of Dental Assisting Teachers) where I officiated on the CADAT Board of Directors Panel ( 2010 -- 2012); stood on the Corporate Relations Council (2011-2012) as well as on the Communications Council (2010-2011) and was involved in the Publications & Website Committee (2010-2011) . Dental Board of California Task force -- I helped formulate the written exam project: RDAEF-II (2009) for dentistry. In the same year I volunteered in the Dental Specialties Institute Inc. -- where I helped create the California state auxiliary certification course structure, content, updates and COMDA / dental board documentation submission for approval of radiation health and safety, coronal polishing, pit and fissure sealant, and ultrasonic scaling courses. I am involved in this work voluntarily still today. Finally, I worked and still work in the American Red Cross as volunteer for the Santa Clara Valley Chapter Reflective observation (observing) This is Kolb's second stage where the learner consciously reflects back on that experience. Dentistry has always been a part of my life. Even when involved in the work of today I see how it can contribute to the heath and, in a certain way, to the esteem of people. Reflecting on my learning experience, I realize how important it is that people be made to feel at ease first before they have their teeth seen to. So many people think dentistry a dull job and have to be cajoled to have their teeth serviced. Yet, dentistry is every bit as important as medical work. People have told me that I am courageous for entering the field. I don't see it as such. I find it an enduring learning experience that can give much too many people. I have learned a lot in my years as practicing dentist. One of the things that I have learned is that hygiene in all aspects of my work is excruciatingly important. Germs can get passed around through deficient dental hygiene too -- through the work that I do, through what I touch, through patients transmitting their germs to another simply because I fail to take optimum preventions. This aspect of dental hygiene is insufficiently known. I think that we should be more aware of it. When first entering dental school, I was surprised at the requirement that students possess social skills. However, the more time that elapses in my business, the more necessary I see it to be that I possess people skills. In this way (as pointed out later), dental vocation extends to so much more than teeth. People are petrified of the dentist -- some may equate him with he gladiators of the old. There is not a day that does not pass that I learn some sort of technique about how to pacify the squirming patient in the dentist chair. And this is not just the child. I have learned to enter the patient's frame of reference as best as I can. Imagining myself to be the patient who is having an invader enter an intimate parte of her body helped me better emphasize with her. I try to keep this image in mind much of the time, and I find that it helps me work better with people as well as become more patient. Another aspect of the work that I would not have realized at one time is the business skills that I learn. I have learned many things, but to me lean management is the most important. This is something that I have learned on the job: to be organized and to focus on that which is most crucial to my work., In this way, I learn to organize my time in a way that each and every component of it is strictly related to my work. I equip my inventory with items that are referential to the work and attempt to ensure that least wastage occurs not only in expense items but also in terms of time and in the duties that I do. As elaboration, I have learned to refer work that another can do to another person whilst I focus only on the work that moves me closer to my goal, that promotes my career, and that acts as my specialization. Principals of lean management have proved invaluable to me in my work; they prohibit me form distraction. Critical thinking too is a great part of dentistry. I have to be on the go the whole time as to which mode of teaching is best for my students; how to best attract them and patients; whether this style of learning or practice is best or whether I should assume another. Dentistry is a far more complex field than I ever imagined it to be. Much of my learning comes from patients and colleagues, but much too comes from my membership in related associations such as in the Santa Clara Dental Society and as Continuing Educational Provider where I am certified as both Dental Board of California CE Provider (#3794) and Dental Assisting National Board CE provider. Abstract conceptualization (thinking, generalization) The best model that I can give for my learning experience is that of Feigenbaum's system where he addresses each and every one of the steps of quality management; it is otherwise called Total Quality Control or Total Quality Management and I choose that as my model of what I have earned / am learning since I realize that in order to succeed I need to have the principles of TQM absorb every aspect of my practice / teaching / management control. The principles of TQM integrate economics, management, and organizational principles that culminate in sound leadership and management techniques. This is a manifestation of systems effects -- in other words, that all components of the business are linked and need to be equitably managed for each to seamlessly link together and flow smoothly. I wear so many different 'hat's (or dental aprons) that I have to ensure that I am organized and effective in each part of them. This is another influential concept of TQM relevant to my work which is economic accountability which stresses that poor performance has a poor cost impact. I have learned that thorough and diligent organizational planning and economic results are linked. Efficient management principles results in smart economic reasoning and outcomes, and, therefore, I am (as said before) a proponent of lean management since lean organization in all aspects of my work tie in to my not only improving my brand name and teaching as well as dentistry and volunteer work, but to also improving my own organization. I have learned that humans affect quality; that it applies to all products and services; that quality is a total life-cycle consideration; that total quality system involves the entire company-wide operating work structure; that to ensure optimum quality I have to be a facilitator of change not a cop; and that I need to strive for continuous commitment. In other words, never to relax and fall into lethargy but, rather, to move forward in the momentum of conscious improvement. I find TQM invaluable particularly since I intend that my business / teaching / volunteer work promote a philosophy of quality as the driving force behind leadership, design, planning, and initiatives with the focus on consumer / patient satisfaction. Reflecting on my dental experience and learning, it seems to me that the principles of TQM not only guide me but also manifest themselves through each of my occupations and activities. They serve as my all-encompassing and directing model. Active experimentation The accumulation of forming my work philosophy and generating my regimen and learning as well as my learning model has been ongoing. They were primarily acquired in my schools which consisted of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Anesthesia Assistants Program (OMAAP),( 2003); University of California, San Francisco, CA (1999) where I took a course as Registered Dental Assistant in Extended Functions (AEF No: 690); the Dental Board of California 91991) where I studied to be Registered Dental Assistant (RDA No: 34591) and gained my Radiation Safety (license No: 101270); Corinthian College, San Jose (1984) where I enrolled in the Registered Dental Assisting program; and on the Dental Assisting National Board, Inc., (1984) where I received my first license as Certified Dental Assistant (CDA No: 124804). This was the theoretical learning. The practical learning has taught me different kinds of experience and is ongoing. It relates to experiences that far transcended and bleed out of my work in dentistry. Valuable consequences of my work connect to teaching and health. As note from my vocational experiences, I integrate dentistry with extensive teaching experience. This involves leadership skills -- the preparing of the lessons for class and aims to make the lesson (naturally tedious and dull to some as well as off-putting) as attractive and interesting as possible. Difficult to do this when you're talking about teeth. In that way then, my dentistry feeds on to so many different topics. Not only does it give me greater occupation with and appreciation for health, but it makes me think about the other -- who I can best put her at her ease and make the subject less intimidating to her. Other skills that I have had to gain include social and professional skills as a working team member. I have learned to develop my interpersonal skills while not only working with patients but also with employees, instructors, and colleagues. In this way, I have acquired a modicum of Social psychology training- an understanding of the psychology involved in working with dental patients, and the art of patient management. As dental assistant, one has to be friendly, outgoing, enjoy working with people, and be comfortable caring for the patient's needs. These are skills that I have largely (although innate) also acquired on the job. I have learned to be not only empathetic, but also objective and acquire critical thinking skills. Critical thinking includes the necessity to make logical and professional decisions regarding patient care. In another way, I have learned to take initiative and make professionally sound decisions while working under the direct supervision of the dentist. I have also had to learn technical writing skills by translating notes in patient files and familiarity with intermediate Microsoft word as well as knowledge of the ABEL-Dent dental software system. . As regards personal qualities, training in dentistry really 'pulls one up' since I have learned to become more independent and assume a greater degree of responsibility particularly since I have had to carry out many tasks independently and keep patient files confidential. As a part of my learning I also covered seemingly unrelated subjects such as Business Communications which helped me enormously to later starting my own business. This subject has prepared me for communication challenges in the workplace (that are particularly rife in a stress-filled environment where consumers are reluctant to come to you! -- and workers may have a challenging time dealing with these reluctant consumers). Incidentally and inadvertently, this course has also improved my writing and speaking skills. In a particular way, dental training focuses on skeletal anatomy and physiology, and more specifically, on dental anatomy and histology, but -- as see from my involvement with health in general -- my training has involved all aspects of health not only microbiology and oral pathology. The subject includes knowledge of disease transmission as well as development of skills necessary for infection control. In a similar way, I have learned to specialize in nutrition and oral hygiene which are essential to maintaining optimum dental health. In a related way, I have also achieved a basic knowledge of pharmacology as it applies to the practice of dentistry and have learned the response to the various emergencies; some of these may arise in the dental office and I have learned to be aware of their complications. My dental learning, therefore, has extended too many areas of life and health outside of the strict discipline. My training -- both practical and theoretical -- and indeed my whole life learning related to this job has taught me importance and practical skills of learning as diverse as time management, appointment scheduling, insurance and social assistance forms and patient billing. (This is another demonstration of how TQM connects cost efficacy with organizational outcome). In summary, therefore, my work as dental assistant / lecturer / manager is directed along the principles of TQM that affect every aspect of my learning experience both theoretical and practical. I have learned to focus on quality and daring, critical learning with the patient being the fundamentals of my work. Dentistry has given me an insight into so many areas of life from social skills to health to leadership qualities and beyond. When starting out on the field, I entered it because I enjoyed dentistry and wanted to help others in terms of their oral hygiene but had no idea that oral hygiene would extend to so much more. Now that I have reviewed my work and learning history, I am amazed at the progress that I have perpetrated and the amount of work and learning that I have done in relatively so short a time that has far progressed beyond my work. I am also amazed at the amount of 'hats' (namely dental aprons) that I am able to wear. Attribute that to my adherence to TQM and to my commitment to being a continuous learner who is resolved to making persistent improvement in her field and learning experience. North America Urinary Tract Infection Testing Market: A Continent of Diverse Needs and Testing Trends
North America Urinary Tract Infection Testing Market Growth & Trends
The North America Urinary Tract Infection Testing Market size is expected to reach USD 269.16 million by 2030, according to a new study by Grand View Research, Inc. The market is expected to expand at a CAGR of 4.0% from 2023 to 2030. The regional UTI testing market is growing due to increasing government initiatives regarding UTI control in the region, technological advancements in UTI testing, and highly developed healthcare infrastructure & improved access to healthcare facilities. For instance, an article published by The New York Times in July 2019 mentioned that the New York City Department of Health launched a mobile app to address drug-resistant urinary tract infections (UTIs). The app provides doctors and nurses with a list of infection strains and their resistance to specific drugs.
Research conducted by this department revealed that many of the UTIs caused by E. coli, the most common type, were resistant to widely used drugs like Bactrim. This growing concern over drug-resistant UTIs drives the demand for advanced UTI testing solutions in North America, as healthcare providers seek more accurate and targeted therapies to combat the rising issue of antibiotic resistance. As a result, the UTI testing market in the region is experiencing significant growth.
Incorporating innovative diagnostic technologies can significantly enhance patient care and management while promoting antibiotic stewardship through faster result delivery, thereby driving market growth. For instance, a team of engineers and molecular biologists in the U.S. has developed a cost-effective point-of-care diagnostic test for rapidly detecting microbial pathogens in urine. Using a simple lab kit, LED lights, a hot plate, and a smartphone, the device shows promising potential for quick and low-cost diagnosis of urinary tract infections (UTIs) in resource-limited settings.
Furthermore, a pilot study published in eBioMedicine compared the smartphone-based real-time loop-mediated isothermal amplification (smaRT-LAMP) system to the more expensive rapid diagnostic technologies and standard hospital tests. The results demonstrated that the smaRT-LAMP system matched the accuracy of hospital diagnostics while significantly reducing costs and testing time.
Key players in the regional urinary tract infection testing market, such as F. Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd., bioMérieux SA, T2 Biosystems, Abbott, Siemens Healthcare GmbH, etc., are implementing strategic initiatives such as mergers, acquisitions, and collaborations to enhance product capabilities and promote their offerings. For instance, in November 2022, Illumina, a global leader in DNA sequencing and array-based technologies, introduced the Illumina Urinary Pathogen Infectious Disease/Antimicrobial Resistance (ID/AMR) Panel (UPIP). This research test utilizes precision metagenomics to identify and measure genitourinary pathogens, including drug-resistant ones that lead to complicated and recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs).
