Welcome to Neb's TED Talk! I buried Ted out back so it's just me today <3
It helps, for this lecture, to have your handy dandy farmer's almanac!!! Or—wait, Poet's Almanac!!
This is a short read btw^ barely over 100 pages for those who are interested. I'll only be covering the relevant topics though.
Anyways
It will also help if you have three years' worth of understanding on how the brain works, neuropsychology, perceptual psychology, and cognitive psychology! ... yeah, some of this may fly over heads. Which is why I'll try to keep it simple! Promise <3. I'll focus on poetry mostly and just touch on some of the psychological theory
Carrying on!
Let's go over some Poetry Terminology
Diction! This, lovely people putting up with my annoying Teacher's style prose, is what we use to refer to your Word Choice. That's it. Important concept nonetheless.
Voice! This is the Speaker. The "I" in the poem. It can have it's own unique qualities, but not what we're focusing on.
Tone! This is the emotional or evocatuve effect that Diction creates when combined with other elements of a poem. Kinda like how a reader feels when reading it.
We'll mostly be focusing on how Diction, and particularly Sound, affects Tone and Imagery.
Next, Imagery! You might be able to guess, but Imagery is how a poet paints a picture with words. The scene one describes, but to get a little more complex. An element of Poetry is the intermingling of the Concrete and the Abstract.
You can not visualize the Abstract. There is no visual for "Love."
You can, however, visualize the Concrete. A yellow ranunculus viewed through pink-tinted lenses, thus mistaken for a rose.
A Poet uses Imagery to tie the Abstract to Concrete.
She fell hard for it
Though it was not there
A tangle of petals
Joyfully yellow
Viewed through rose lenses
She thought it love
Next, some psychology basics!
Striate Cortex! This is a handy part of your Visual Cortex used in the processing of visual information. There's some distinguishers with the Primary, Secondary, etc. Visual Association Areas. The Ventral & Dorsal Pathways... I'll get into detail as we go along.
The Thalamus! This is sort of a relay center for information in your brain. A minor note, but with things like the Lateral Geniculate Nucleus causing responses in visual processing based on sound... maybe this will be important? Idk. I'm rambling as I go.
Wernicke's Area! This is the part of your brain that decodes speech.
Limbic system! Emotions, learning, memory. This does a lot.
A Brodmann area! This is just another way of marking different regions of the brain, but particularly the cerebral cortex. It's like a map! We'll bring up... prolly 17, 19, & 40? Idk.
Uh...
Cognition! A form of thinking. The act of manipulating information and processing it in your brain. Perception, language, and memory all fall under this.
Concepts! One of the theorized ways our brain categorizes and processes linguistic information, images, ideas, memories, experiences, etc. Some stuff with Semantic Memory is important here. This will be more important once I talk about associations.
Conditioning, a fancy dancy term for learning!
And... y'know I can't think of any more broad ones for before hand, so I'm gonna start rambling and just adress the vocabulary as I go.
every time a trans girl infodumps me abt something they're passionate about i cant help but i fall in love a little bit
