Mr Pradip Burman Shares His View On Overpopulation

The birth rate is at an all-time higher in India as compared to the death rate. India is in the second position globally for the highest population and is said to step up to the first position by 2025. Also, its landmass is much smaller to accommodate a higher population. Such issues have been noticed by social leaders like Mr Pradip Burman and are making valuable efforts to eradicate overpopulation.

Mr Pradip Burman, chairman of Dabur, Nepal and a board member of Aviva Life Insurance, is a philanthropist, sworn environmentalist and a crusader of sustainability. He has been the director of his ancestral FMCG company Dabur India. He has also founded Ayurvet, a company manufacturing herbal products for animals.

According to Mr Pradip Burman, overpopulation has led to the two biggest sustainability challenges, i.e. climate change and air pollution. Due to air pollution, our children are suffering. They have asthma, lung ailments and other respiratory problems from a young age. Pollution is also the leading cause of climate change. It is happening through overpopulation because the greater the population, the higher the emission of gases.

Mr Pradip Burman further says,” Overpopulation is the most significant challenge faced by many countries today. As the global population grows towards 10 billion, consumption of water, food and energy is increasing, which results in the depletion of non-renewable resources. But these challenges can be overcome through solutions like recycling and 100% consumption of renewable energy. We have to recycle everything and consume resources that will come from renewable energy. If we can execute these two things, I think the problem will be solved”.

Being around philanthropists and environmentalists all his life, Mr Pradip Burman is determined towards protecting the environment and is currently working for various social causes. One of them is population stabilization through Project Aakar.

Project Aakar is an initiative that focuses on curbing overpopulation in India. Setting up the project in 2 districts in Uttar Pradesh, namely Barabanki and Bahraich, they educate the people in rural areas on the importance of family planning, reproduction, and the usage of contraceptives. The reason behind starting this initiative in these regions is due to its high fertility rate. They are also creating awareness among newly married and young unmarried people. There are primary health centres where they make contraceptives and distribute them to young couples. Their short film, namely ‘Dampatti No 1’, depicts the importance of family planning and has won an award for the best film towards family planning.

Project Akar is an initiative through the Mobius Foundation, a non-profit organization founded by Mr Pradip Burman that works towards environmental protection. Pradip Burman's Story of Grit and Determination

Ketto is an online crowd funding space for social causes and is based in Mumbai, India. It was founded on 15 August 2012 by Varun Sheth along with film and theatre actor Kunal Kapoor. In its first year, Ketto raised INR 4.5 million for 18 campaigns. Their causes ranged from education to women’s empowerment.

Kunal Kapoor: 

Kunal was born in Mumbai to a Punjabi family whose origins are in Amritsar. They’re literally making the world a sweet place to live in, aren’t they?

2. Anita Ahuja:

Anita wanted to do something about the waste crisis of Delhi; she came up with an ingenious idea that ended up creating employment opportunities and source of income for around 300 unskilled workers.

With her NGO Conserve, she creates bags, diaries, raincoats, umbrellas out of plastic waste through a process that she invented herself. She also patented this innovative process that “up-cycles” waste plastic to Handmade Recycled Plastic, known as HRP.

Anita sure knows how to club the principles of enterprise and social service.

3. Karishma Mehta

What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when we say ‘a well captured picture with warm stories of dreams, failures, and hopes on Facebook? Yes, you’re right! We’re talking about the wonderful Humans of Bombay page founded by Karishma Mehta.

Not just that, she started her NGO Aakanksha at the age of 18, to make an attempt to maximize the potential of children belonging to low-income families. 5. Mahita Fernandez

One night Mahita woke up because of her grumbling belly and this precise incident is how she came up with the brilliant “Feed Your Neighbour”. She realized how there are many out there who don’t have the privilege of just walking into their kitchens and opening the fridge when they experience a hunger pang.

Sometimes even the smallest of the insights can lead to a movement.

With “Feed Your Neighbour” on Facebook, during the festive period of Dusshera, Mahita invites people in Benguluru to cook 5 extra meals which are later picked and distributed by a fleet of enthusiastic volunteers. This simple concept has pulled off a logistical miracle by managing to feed 1,22,937 meals to the hungry.

6. Amla Ruia

She’s rightly called the “Water Mother” of the formerly known dry state of Rajasthan. While the government was helping them with water tanks, Amla started researching and planning on how she could build a sustainable solution to help people. And because of her idea of building check dams, Rajasthan is a different place altogether today.

The farmer incomes have increased and become steady because they are now able to grow 3 crops in a year as opposed to 1, larger incomes have led to purchase of transport amenities like 1 to 2 motorbikes per family and 4-5 tractors per village, migration to cities has reduced and believe it or not, it has also affected the marriage pattern, people are willing to marry their daughters there.

With her Aakar Charitable Trust, she wishes to take this to other states as well.

7. Ria Sharma

During her final semester in Leeds College of Arts, she watched a movie called Saving Face and that moved her so much she decided to do something about the heinous crime of acid attacks by helping the survivors.

On receiving immense support from her professors, she travelled to Bangalore to meet some of the victims as a part of her project that required creating a documentary. Soon this project evolved into a massive revolution called Make Love Not Scars.

Under her leadership, the NGO has now spread awareness, raised funds for the treatment of victims, and even made attempts at implementation and amendments of laws with respect to acid attacks.

It’s great to see how many lives these women impacted with their ability to identify a problem, think of a solution, believe in it and most importantly ACT on it!

7 Initiatives by Pradip Burman to Save the Environment

 At 80, Mr Pradip Burman is an entrepreneur, philanthropist, environmentalist & prolific businessman, founded Mobius Foundation. It is a non-profit organisation that works towards sustainable development & spreading awareness among people about why we need to walk on this path.

 The founder strongly believes that we must sprout sustainability awareness in society and showcase the irresponsible activity we do without thinking about our environment for petty gains. 

For a sustainable lifestyle, we must educate children & make some profound decisions so that they can be soft and friendly towards nature because running behind materialistic comfort only takes us towards our end. 

Therefore, Pradip Burman began his initiative to save the environment. 

The Initiatives by Pradip Burman 

1.    Mission Sustainability: Population V/s Planet 

Human population growth is the root of all environmental-related problems. However, this is often left out of the conversation. We can fight to lessen climate change, clean up pollution & stop habitat loss of biodiversity. But these all cannot be achieved until we address or control unsustainable population growth. The first thing that we can do is talk about it with the people. 

To achieve this goal, Mobius Foundation began its journey by partnering with Zee Media and WION Channel to start conversations nationwide to explain how population growth is destroying natural resources and greenery. 

2.            Project Aakar

Project Aakar is another initiative by the Mobius Foundation and a part of the Sustainability Solution program that works to promote awareness among women for family planning. 

As the Earth is burdened with the growing population, they require more natural resources to consume, such as water, food, energy. This growing demand is depleting the planet’s resources. 

Through this initiative, Mobius Foundation is supporting the Government of India’s commitment to stabilize the population. It is a crucial step to reduce global issues, extinction of species & carbon footprint. 

3. Gyan Anant Vidyalaya 

Pradip Burman has established a sustainable school called Gyan Anant Vidyalaya to teach young children about experiential learning by planting trees, and to live a sustainable life through curriculum activities. 

The school gives knowledge through activities like conservation management, forestry, organic farming, etc. 

4. Project Sanjeevani 

To increase green cover in the states, Mobius Foundation, under Project Sanjeevani, began a mass tree plantation drive in 2018 and has planted 5000 saplings in Haryana.

The growth of greenery will not just reduce the greenhouse gases & other carbon footprints, but it will also help restore the ecological conservation projects for plantation drive. 

Many local schools, students, farmers, Kisan club members and NGOs join the plantation drive to improve our Earth’s health. 

5 .ICSE India

The International Conference on Sustainability Education (ICSE) was jointly established by Mobius Foundation and ‘The Climate Reality Project’ in partnership with the UNESCO New Delhi office. The initiative addresses the challenges that are halting the path of sustainable education. 

It is empowering learners with new values, skills and attitudes that take the entire society towards sustainability. The leaders, educators, practitioners and policymakers are sharing innovative ideas, practices, case studies and policies to make a better decision for ‘Education for Sustainable Development, Environmental Education and Climate Change Education.’ 

6 .Training of Trainers on Circular Economy (ToTCE): The Educational Institutions

ToTCE is an empowering education programme that brings change to education with circular economy knowledge. In this initiative, Mobius Foundation invites collaborative efforts from practitioners, educational institutions and leaders to strengthen the education system and practices to provide knowledge beyond formal education. The programme is also designed to induce core circular thinking and values for teachers, lecturers, and academicians to teach future generations. 

7. Khushal Parivar Diwas

Mobius Foundation began Khushal Parivar Diwas in sync with the UP government’s initiative, family planning. It organises camps at Trivendigani CHC and Kaisarganj CHC in Barabanki and Bahraich district to spread awareness and showcase how contraceptive methods can help them in planning a family. 

It will increase the awareness among couples, help them plan a family & reduce the birth rates so that they can live a fulfilling and happy life.
