Amor Culebras: Blood Pt.1
*I do not own the characters and thus this is a work of fiction*
After the explosion we all peeked over the table we were hiding behind. Now, I noticed the dead people from earlier were either more dead or were impaled by the stakes. Making this almost foolproof plan slightly harder. I wasn’t expecting the dead to turn into the enemy. However, the stake bomb slowed them down considerably. They were crawling slowly towards us which made killing them easier by far.
The original three were still intact. Not an ideal result, but the stake did impale them, just not in the place that would kill them. Daddy full went to into rage mode since now he was down to one child. Kate tried to get a hold him but she wasn’t even able to get close. I shifted my focus to the one currently crawling towards me. I went for the stake and stomped it further into its chest. I wasn’t sure I hit the heart. A few seconds later it hissed weakly and disintegrated into dust. P
Daddy Fuller was being pinned by one of the girls as I turned back to Kate. Only I didn’t see her. I whipped around and saw her standing behind the snake girl with an electric saw in her hands. I froze, not sure what to do. I didn’t think Kate knew how to use it or if she could stomach using it. That’s she pulled the chain and it started up. I smiled, the worst time to smile, but Kate looked ready. So, I had a pseudo-proud mom moment. It only lasted a few seconds, because she cut through snake lady and then I noticed the biker chick turned snake thing crawling in her direction. Saw Richie’s knife and grabbed it off the floor. I wasn’t even sure if I was aiming in the right area but I went over and stabbed her in the back closest to where the heart should be. The ear-shattering cry let me know that I hit the right spot. I looked up and saw the look on Riches’ face.
Daddy Fuller was checking on Kate. She looked horrified and confused. They both turned and look at me. I just nodded so that I didn’t get distracted by Richie. Seth and Richie both walked up to where we were. Having taken care of the bartender dude they looked super tired. Richie put his hand out and looked at me. I handed him the knife. I figured that’s what he wanted. I guessed right. He seemed a little infatuated with it for a second.
“Thank you,” he said.
He looked at me with a quick smile. I rolled my eyes. I wanted to take a very long shower with any form of acid that would get rid of the skin cells that he touched; just the crazy parts. All of the rest of him that’s wasn’t crazy was fine.
I felt like someone was watching this and suddenly noticed Santanico standing behind Richie and Seth. I guess my facial expression gave them an indication that someone was behind them and they both turned around.
“You can’t leave, Richard,” she said. “Not yet.”
I wanted with all of my being for her to just not exist in real life. However, considering this was actually happening I was more concerned about how exactly she needed him. And what for? He was a bank robber and apparently a safecracker. She was a demon/snake/vampire thing with a strip bar. I was confused about what she could possibly need him for.
She started on her speech and it was really convincing and Richie was doing his best to say no to her, but I seriously doubted this “lady” was going to take no for an answer.
“I’m in your soul Richard,” I heard her say.
I looked at Seth. The level terrified and pissed that he was couldn’t have been more apparent.
“I asked you to trust me, but I didn’t tell you what was coming,” she said.
I seriously wanted to interject, but I remember what happened the last time someone tried to interrupt this conversation.
“I wanted to show you who I was. The world is much more complicated than you know,” she said.
Richie seemed to have a really hard time with this.
“Richie, listen to me. Don’t listen to this. Don’t listen to this!” Seth said.
Now he decided to speak up. This whole time I was wondering what was the point of getting her for Seth. I was so lady obsessed with Richie that I forgot that they both wanted to come here for different reasons. Richie was still listening to Santanico and it looked like Seth had other ideas.
He was reaching for the stake on the table less than a foot to his right.
“Something’s coming,” she said.
“Let them go,” Richie said.
That’s when I heard a shot ring out. Richie’s body jerked forward and I looked back to see the Ranger, surprisingly, in one piece. With a gunpoint directly at Richie. I looked back at Richie and saw the large red spot on his upper chest. He staggered and fell forward. The blood was all over Santanico’s face and she shifted, mad as all hell. Richie dropped the knife and she pushed Seth hard sending him into the Ranger not far behind him. And they both slid and hit the wall.
I moved back because the only thing between Santanico and the rest of us was me. There was literally no way I was going to even try to deal with that. I looked back at her as she steps back and grabbed Richie pulling him into the back and the metal grate closing behind her. Seth yelled for Richie. Like calling after him was going to change anything.
Seth picked up the very bloody and not snake/vampire Ranger. And pushed him into the bar. Now, considering what happened the last time these tried to resolve anything I knew it would come to blows and 0 talking. I was going to attempt help. Then Daddy Fuller put a shotgun to Seth’s head.
“Whoa, let’s all just relax and put all weapons down,” I announced.
“He didn’t die, he lived,” Kate pointed out. “He might know something.”
I know a way out, but you're too stupid to listen,” he said pointedly.
“This guy thinks he’s Dirty Harry. That’s good because you’re are going to die bloody,” said Seth.
I was about to say something. However, I refrained because Daddy Fuller was pointing out how it was Seth’s fault Scott was now missing and/or dead.
“I second that,” I piped up. “Now, the Mexican standoff isn’t working. So, why don’t we ask the Ranger what hole he popped out of. Before we all become lunch.”
Daddy Fuller seemed to all of sudden remember I existed again. And turned around to look at me. I looked him back. He nodded and went back to poking Seth in the head with the shotgun.
“By your scripture, you raise that blade, I can splatter that melon of yours all over the room,” said Daddy Fuller.
Seth turned back while turning the Rangers head.
“You see this?! Huh! Looks like this little piggy already had a close encounter,” said Seth.
“I’m fine, there’s nothing wrong with me,” said the Ranger.
“Nothing was wrong with those bikers, either, until they got up and started chomping,” said Seth.
“I know a way out, it’s down that trap door over there through a hole,” said the Ranger.
It sounded like a last-ditch effort to keep himself alive. Not that I blamed him. I was basically doing the same with the deal I made with Richie. I wasn’t even sure that was still a legit deal.
“Down to where?” Asked Daddy Fuller.
“It’s a grinder...for flesh,” said the Ranger. “Get past, there might be an exit.”
“Thanks for the tip, but it’s the end of the line for you,” said Seth.
“Leaving him behind is like pulling the trigger. I say we vote on it,” said Daddy Fuller.
I hadn’t considered voting a thing as of now, but killing anyone at this moment would defeat the purpose of making it out of here. Strength in numbers.
“Does this look like a parish hall to you?” Seth shouted.”Huh?”
“All in favor of leaving the Ranger, raise your hand!” Daddy Fuller shouted.
Seth was first to raise his hand not that that surprised me. Kate, however, did next. He father shifted back and looked at her.
“Sorry, daddy, but you saw what happened to those bikers, he could turn on us,” she said.
Kate was a good girl she was just scared. Logically she definitely made the right choice. Morally however I could tell she didn’t want to leave him behind. Seth and the Ranger looked at the Professor.
“Professor?” the Ranger said.
He raised the wooden stake, in favor.
“Come on man, give me a break,” he said.
“I’m sorry, sheriff. It’s purely academic,” he said.
“What about you, Precious?” asked Seth.
“I’m not deciding. I’m neutral,” I said.
Seth seemed rather surprised and so did everyone else. I just shrugged and went into a crouch position. The alcohol to adrenaline ratio was resetting back to alcohol winning. Seth pulled the ranger off the bar and tied him to a pole on the bar.
“This ain’t over,” said the Ranger.
“Yeah, I’m pretty sure it is,” said Seth.

AU where Riko is the leader of The Elite Four
The Pokemon League Officials have started discussing the idea of a “final boss” after the Elite Four, the Pokemon Champion
And whether or not Kevin Day (Grass Type master) is more suited to the title than Riko (Water Type master)
Riko breaks Kevin’s Pokeball-throwing hand, and Kevin leaves, assumed to be unable to aim properly to catch a wild Pokemon ever again
(Kayleigh Day and Tetsuji Moriyama are the first two people to ever start making up rules for having Pokemon fights, before that Pokemon were either just wild or taken in as pets or taught work skills like Machokes)
Riko wants the attention of his father, Kengo Moriyama, who on the outside is just a businessman but actually is the leader of a criminal force called Team Rocket
Riko’s Perfect Court is the Perfect Elite Four, and Nathaniel Wesninski is supposed to be Number Four, taking after his father “The Butcher”’s proficiency for being a Steel Type gym leader
Neil Josten has been on the run for years, leaving his father’s Steel Pokemon behind him. He and his mother avoided battles and stayed out of Pokemon centers and hospitals, treating themselves and her Fighting type Pokemon to avoid being tracked through Pokemon ID numbers. When she died he released his mother’s Pokemon into the wild when he burned her remains on the beach, and settled in a tiny town no one’s heard of
He eventually joins the Trainer school there, desperate for Pokemon interaction, but the school is so tiny that they don’t teach all the Types, just the elementals, so Neil takes what he can get and accepts a Ponyta as his “starter” Pokemon
Fiery personality and good at running, they’re a great pair
Hernandez, the leader of the school, sends battle videos of Neil to his old friend Wymack
There are little street groups of friends that band together to train and try and get good enough to take the Pokemon League challenge
The “Foxes” are one of these, a bunch of misfits under the tutelage of Professor “Coach” Wymack, who has Fire Blast tattoos up his arms and whose partner Vulpix gives the Foxes their nickname
(When Seth is murdered and they’re down to nine trainers, Wymack uses a fire stone to evolve his Vulpix into Ninetails)
He only takes in the “worst of the worst”, people who he feels could use Pokemon training to get their lives back on track, who need the second chance. So they’re not a bunch of ten-year-olds, they’re older teens
They get in so much trouble that they have a Nurse Abby traveling with them instead of going to Nurse Abbys at Pokemon Centers
And Coach’s good friend and former Psychic Trainer Betsy Dobson, whose current partner Combee earns her the nickname Bee herself. Combee makes lots of honey and she loves to share sweets in her therapy sessions
Some trainer-pokemon pairings (I’m completely ignoring Regions and Generations for this):
You’d think Andrew would go for things with knives on them (Scyther, Beedrill, Skarmory), but no, he doesn’t need a Pokemon to physically protect him, he carries his own knives, which is why people are afraid of him and think he’s psychotic. He has Dark type Pokemon, chief of which are Murkrow and Mismagius. He has an eidetic memory and can easily memorize the base stats of all Pokemon types, the potential moves they can learn, and all the known caught Pokemon and commonly used battle items of a trainer they’re facing, and that’s why he’s such a great trainer
Nicky has a Feebas and he loudly proclaims to everyone who will listen that someday it will be the most gorg Milotic belonging to the most gorg gay trainer there is (Eric his fiance is a Hiker with Rock pokemon who lives in a different Region)
Aaron I’m-gonna-be-a-doctor Minyard has a Chancey
Katelyn is Abby’s assistant and has a yellow PomPom style Oricorio, she believes that cheerfulness and support are just as important to healing as medicine. Aaron is gaga for her, Andrew thinks she’s a perky waste of space
Half joking but not really, Kevin caught a Bellsprout right-handed and power-evolved it into a Victreebell that holds a fuckton of vodka in its pitcher to drown its food in instead of acid, so Kevin has an unending supply. (He had a Celebi but he has to earn its respect back by overcoming his injury and facing Riko again)
The girls, hoo fuck, Dan and her super tough Nidorina, Allison and Dragonite (her parents wanted her to have Beauty Contest Pokemon and not evolve her Dragonair but she Gave No Fucks), and Renee and her sweet-looking Mawile that can Fuck You Up if need be
Seth has uhhhh a Pidgeotto, Pidgeottos are assholes.
Matt and his Salazzle (listen this boy’s type and also Type is Strong Badass Black Females okay)
Jeremy has a Mudsdale named Trojan, which his group of trainers are nicknamed after, and he’s the most sporting and sunny gym leader you ever did meet
Riko has a Tentacruel that he likes to use to restrain and/or whip or poison his victims, he’s a fucking jackass. He also has a Sharpedo for cutting people with
I’m getting way too deep into this AU but I’m going to leave off with Andrew telling Neil at some point “You’re more like a Mimikyu than a Vulpix, trying to blend in with the Pokemon that trainers go for so you can have battles, and changing your disguise any time someone gets close enough to see the clawed ghost underneath. I don’t trust you.”
(But clearly Andrew finds Mimikyu fascinating lol)
(Andrew also obviously thinks Neil’s natural auburn is much more suited to his personality and trainer type than brown hair. Neil’s eventual burns suit him too, make him look like a seasoned Fire trainer.)
(Ponyta trusts Andrew enough to pet him without burning him with his mane, because Neil so clearly trusts and needs this man)
And also “Nathaniel...you were supposed to be an Elite Steel master” “I’m NEIL, I’m a Fire trainer now” “Your Ponyta isn’t strong enough to face Riko, you’re at a type disadvantage. He has to evolve into Rapidash, and quickly” “Will you still train me?” “Every night”
Bonus: Riko telling Neil “That name means ‘Champion’, you will never refer to yourself by it again, your name is Nathaniel” and Neil responding with a grin, teeth red from a bloody nose, “I knew there was a reason I picked it.”

Bifidus
Elaine writes: Bifidis is normally the only gut bacteria present in breast fed babies. Early researchers felt that when bifidis persists into early childhood and beyond, it correlated with celiac disease. I, personally, do not believe in using bifidis in a probiotic or in a yoghurt culture.
The use of different strains of probiotics has been a subject of much discussion. I do not pretend to know the answers for most of them and have told the list that spending one year doing library research convinced me that there is more ambiguity than black and white answers.
To further the confusion, very smart people are advising some very dumb things. Companies have jumped on the band wagon proposing oral administration of various types of Lactobacillus strains along with things like bifidis and have given absolutely no attention to the fact that these bacteria will mutate depending upon what is in the colon for them "to eat."
Seth on healing crow referenced a wonderful article which was a chapter in a book written by his former professor of bacteriology at the University of Wisconsin. (copyright 2000 Kenneth Todar. Bacteriology pg 303. I have it in front of me.
"The normal flora of humans is exceedingly complex and consists of more than 200 species of bacteria. The makeup of the normal flora depends upon various factors including genetics, age, sex, stress, nutrition and diet of the individual......The distribution of the bacterial flora of humans is shown in the following table. This table lists only a fraction of the total bacterial species that occur as normal flora of humans and does not express the total number or concentration of bacteria at any site."
It then goes on to list many species including Bacteroides sp and Bifidobacterium bifidum. I understand that these two are closely related. Others include Enterobacteriaceae (E. coli) and Lactobacillus, etc.
Then comes the confusing part: "The greatest number of bacteria are found in the lower intestinal tract, specifically the colon and the most prevalent bacteria are the Bacteroides, a group of Gram-negative, anaerobic, non-sporeforming bacteria. They have been implicated in the initiation of colitis and colon cancer. Bifidobacterium bifidum is the Gram-positive counterpart to the Bacteroides in the colon. They are anaerobic, non-sporeforming, lactic acid bacteria. They are the "friendly" bacteria in the intestine. Bacteroides predominate in the intestine of meat-eaters, bifidobacteria and other lactic acid bacteria predominate in the intestine of vegetarians."
From Elaine: That said, it appears that bifidis could replace bacteroides and the implication of the latter in initiating cancer and colitis could be overcome. However, that is not certain and considering that our paleolithic diet was high in meat, I would doubt if meat is the real suspicious element in the diet. The research has indicated to me that any work done to support this thesis was not done without many other variables in the diet including high starch. Seth provides the following information:
"Intestinal Floras of Populations That Have a High Risk of Colon Cancer
APPLIED AND ENVIRONMENTAL MICROBIOLOGY, Sept. 1995, p. 3202-3207 Vol. 61, No. 9
The study finds that populations with the highest colon cancer risk have a higher number of bifido bacteria than populations with the lowest risk. The authors were very surprised at this result since bifido bacteria is a "good" bacteria. Of course this is an epidemiology study (which always have flaws) but combined with Elaine's knowledge on the subject sends a powerful warning in my mind.
t writes: In the case of bifidus, it has a tendency to overgrow. Each type of bacteria has different properties, different byproducts... I usually think of it in terms of different levels of tenacity and agression. Your gut is truly a multicultural society - some member are more altuistic, and others are criminal. Some are interested in improving the neighbourhood, and some are only out for themselves.
L. Acidophilus is about as community-minded a bacterial strain as you will find, with S.Thermophilus and L.Bulgaricus running a close second. The others are either less friendly, or are unknown quantities. It gets even more complicated if you consider soil based strains.
So we stick with Acidophilus in our supplements, and Acidophilus, Thermophilus and Bulgaricus in our yoghurt, because they are good neighbours.
Julie writes: I am one who had used yoghurt containing Bifidus as my starter the first eight months on the diet and after a few back to back flares where nothing helped, Lucy clued me in that the Bifidus may have overgrown in my colon and therefore caused my endless flare. Sure enough, after I switched to the powdered yogourmet starter I literally came out of the flare overnight! I am a big proponent

Brain scans have revealed the first evidence for what appears to be a heightened state of consciousness in people who took psychedelic drugs in the name of science.
Healthy volunteers who received LSD, ketamine or psilocybin, a compound found in magic mushrooms, were found to have more random brain activity than normal while under the influence, according to a study into the effects of the drugs.
Analysis What does an LSD-style drug-induced 'higher state of consciousness' feel like?
Rosalind Stone Read more
The shift in brain activity accompanied a host of peculiar sensations that the participants said ranged from floating and finding inner peace, to distortions in time and a conviction that the self was disintegrating.
Researchers at the University of Sussex and Imperial College, London, measured the activity of neurons in people’s brains as the drugs took hold. Similar measurements have shown that when people are asleep or under anaesthetic, their neurons tend to fire in a more predictable way than when they are awake.
“What we find is that under each of these psychedelic compounds, this specific measure of global conscious level goes up, so it moves in the other direction. The neural activity becomes more unpredictable,” said Anil Seth, a professor of neuroscience at the University of Sussex. “Until now, we’ve only ever seen decreases compared to the baseline of the normal waking state.”
LSD's impact on the brain revealed in groundbreaking images
Read more
The research, published in the journal Scientific Reports, appears 74 years to the day after the Swiss chemist Albert Hoffman went on the world’s first LSD trip. In one of the most terrifying examples of self experimentation in the annals of science, Hoffman ingested 250 micrograms of lysergic acid and had to be helped home on his bicycle by his lab assistant. After a local doctor reassured Hoffman that he was not about to die, the scientist began to enjoy himself, writing later about fantastic images surging in on him and “exploding in coloured fountains.”
The scans found the most notable effects in parts of the brain that are known to be important for perceptions, rather than other roles such as language and movement. And while it is unclear how the change in brain activity affects consciousness, the result is what the scientists expected.
“I think people would have the intuitive idea that their experience on psychedelic compounds is a bit more random, a bit less constrained, that there’s a mixing of the senses, and all kinds of connections that are experienced between things that are previously unconnected,” Seth said.
Robin Carhart-Harris, a researcher at Imperial College who took part in the study, said the sudden increase in randomness in brain activity appeared to reflect a deeper and richer conscious state.
“People tend to associate phrases like ‘a higher state of consciousness’ with hippy speak and mystical nonsense. This is potentially the beginning of the demystification, showing its physiological and biological underpinnings,” he said. “Maybe this is a neural signature of the mind opening.”
A puke bucket and an ancient drug: is ayahuasca the future of PTSD treatment?
Beyond confirming what scores of hippies learned more than 40 years ago, the research could help scientists to understand what neural activity corresponds to different levels of consciousness in humans. Another hope is that by understanding how people respond to the drugs, doctors can more accurately predict which patients might benefit from having psychedelic drugs to treat mental disorders, such as depression.
Carhart-Harris was among researchers who published a small trial last year into the use of psilocybin to treat serious depression. The results were promising, but more studies are needed before the compound can be considered for treatment, and the scientists warned people off picking magic mushrooms to treat their condition.
“The evidence is becoming clear that there is a clinical efficacy with these drugs,” said Seth. “We might be able to measure the effects of LSD in an individual way to predict how someone might respond to it as treatment.”

Widening metal tolerance for hydrogels
Researchers seeking to develop self-healing hydrogels have long sought to mimic the natural ability of mussels to generate strong, flexible threads underwater that allow the mussels to stick to rocks.
The natural process that gives these mussel threads, which are called byssal, the ability to break apart and re-form is a purely chemical process, not a biological one, MIT graduate student Seth Cazzell noted in a presentation to the Materials Research Society fall meeting in Boston on Dec. 5.
The critical step in the process is the chemical binding of polymer chains to a metal atom (a protein-to-metal bond in the case of the mussel). These links are called cross-linked metal coordination bonds. Their greatest strength occurs when each metal atom binds to three polymer chains, and they form a network that results in a strong hydrogel.
In a recently published PNAS paper, Cazzell and associate professor of materials science and engineering Niels Holten-Andersen demonstrated a method to create a self-healing hydrogel in a wider range of metal concentrations through the use of competition controlled by the pH, or acidity and alkalinity, of the environment. Cazzell is a former National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellow.
In their model computational system, Cazzell showed that in the absence of pH-controlled competition, excess metal — typically iron, aluminum, or nickel — overwhelms the ability of the polymer to form strong cross-links. In the presence of too much metal, the polymers will bind singly to metal atoms instead of forming cross-linked complexes, and the material remains a liquid.
One commonly studied mussel-inspired metal coordinating ligand is catechol. In this study, a modified catechol, nitrocatechol, was attached to polyethylene glycol. By studying the nitrocatechol system coordinated with iron, as well as a second model hydrogel system (histidine coordinated with nickel), Cazzell experimentally confirmed that the formation of strong cross-links could be induced under excess metal concentrations, supporting their computational evidence of the competitive role of hydroxide ions (negatively charged hydrogen-oxygen pairs), which act as a competitor to the polymer for binding to metal.
In these solutions, polymers can bind to metal atoms in ones, twos, or threes. When more metal atoms bind to the hydroxide ions, there are fewer metal atoms available to bind to polymer atoms, which increases the likelihood that the polymer atoms will bind to the metal atoms in strong triple cross-links that produce the desired putty-like gel.
“What we really like about this study is we’re not looking at biology directly, but we think it’s giving us nice evidence of something that might be happening in biology. So it’s an example of materials science informing what we think the organism is actually using to build these materials,” Cazzell says.
In simulations, Cazzell plotted the effect of the hydroxide competitor on strong hydrogel formation and found that as competitor strength increases, “we can enter into a range where we can form a gel almost anywhere.” But, he says, “Eventually the competitor gets too strong, and you lose the ability to form a gel at all.”
These results have potential for use in advanced 3D printing of synthetic tissues and other biomedical applications.
This work was supported by the National Science Foundation through the MIT Materials Research Laboratory’s Materials Research Science and Engineering Center program, and by the U.S. Office of Naval Research.
