What Self Storage Means?
The term “Self Storage” is a shorthand for “Self Service Storage,” which is also popularly known as mini storage (minilager Oslo). It is a facility where tenants receive storage spaces or storage unites like lockers, containers, rooms, and outdoor spaces for generally shorter periods. The tenants can be anyone, companies as well as individuals. Renters often hire self-storage units from self-storage service providers on a month-to-month basis.
Tumblr media
Now, as we know what self-storage is, let’s move on to the benefits you can receive by renting a self-storage unit while you are set for a new start.

2.Storing Personal Stuff  Away Enhances House Selling Potential
If you are trying to sell your house, and expecting potential buyers, you should place your personal belongings away before they arrive. The reason being, on arrival, they can expediently see all the nooks and corners of your house without any visual impediments. That is when they can be conveniently decisive about buying the house, which enhances the chances of selling.
3. A Space for Belongings When You Search for Fresh Residence
In a condition when you have already sell your house and still looking for a new home, acquiring a self-storage unit is essential. If your necessary stuff are stored in a secure space, you can continue your search conveniently and without any mental headache.

Then you can think about what should be the best corner for your deluxe couch, what lamp would look good in which walls and more on. Marie Høeg (15 April 1866 – 22 February 1949) was a Norwegian photographer and suffragist. Høeg's published work was traditional in nature, while her private photography, including images of and created with her partner, Bolette Berg, challenged ideas of gender. She was the founder of the Horten Discussion Association, which is still active today. Høeg also started the Horten Branch of the National Association for Women's Right to Vote, the Horten Women's Council and the Horten Tuberculosis Association.
Høeg was born in Langesund on 15 April 1866. She was a photography student in Brevik and completed her photography apprenticeship in 1890.
From 1890 to 1895, Høeg lived in Finland, working as a photographer in Ekenäs and Hanko. Here, she was greatly influenced by the Finnish women's rights movement.
Høeg moved from Finland to Horten in 1895 together with Bolette Berg. Berg was five years younger than Høeg and had trained as a photographer, probably while living in Finland. Høeg and Berg set up and ran their own photography studio, which was named Berg & Høeg. Høeg used their studio not only for photography, but also as a meeting place for women interested in feminism and women's suffrage.
Høeg and Berg moved to Kristiania (present-day Oslo) in 1903 and continued working as professional photographers there, mostly producing scenic and portrait post cards.
The two founded the publishing company Berg og Høghs Kunstforlag A.S., publishing books such as the three-volume Norske Kvinder, which concerns the topic of the history of Norwegian women.
Marie Høeg died in Oslo on 22 February 1949.
Many of her glass negatives were discovered after her death inside a barn in the 1980s. The barn was on the property of a farm where Berg and Høeg lived at the end of their lives. A series of negatives in a box labelled "private" contained photographs of Berg and Høeg dressed in men's clothes, smoking, and wearing mustaches. These 440 glass negatives are now in the collection of the Preus Museum in Horten, Norway.

Interview in Dagbladet 18/09/2020
We have come home from the US on March 12th and took the second to last plane flying from New York to Norway. I was sitting in the plane seat, reading that everything is closing down at home on my phone, reveals Vegard Ylvisåker (41). - Yes, that was lucky, adds Bård Ylvisåker (38).
The two brothers, who eventually became world-famous as the comedy duo Ylvis, are sitting in a meeting room at Concorde TV in Oslo. Behinds them is a huge board with post-it notes with ideas for their new show „Ylvis på Holmen with Calle and Magnus“. They have just started filming the comedy programme which premieres September 20th on TV Norge. But it wasn’t actually På Holmen the brothers were supposed to be working on this autumn.
-          We were working on something completely different, but then corona came and we had to close the taps, says Bård.
-          We turned around and came up with something different. There are so many summer shows on TV right now. We wanted one too, that’s why we showcase our summer place on the islet, continues the big brother.
-          Yes, we walk around in summer clothes and white pirate breeches and film outside right up until Christmas, smiles the younger brother.
Became superstars
Ylvis became, as most people know, global stars after The Fox became a viral hit in 2013. The song climbed to the top of the charts all over the world, and currently has almost one billion views on YouTube. Ylvis have since received a number of job offers from the other side of the Atlantic, but the brothers who both live family life with children and dogs rather wanted to work in Norway.
-          We can’t live better than here, have an office 20 minutes from the house and family, make what we feel like making and get paid for it. We can dream of big things abroad, but it isn’t always more fun, Bård admits.
-          We still get offers but they would have to be made of gold before we would tear down existing plans and move on to something else, Vegard adds.
Challenging
The brothers don’t want to reveal what they were doing in the US when the first wave of coronavirus hit. But since Norway closed down they have used a lot of the time to work with ideas for Ylvis på Holmen, a show which they are hosting with former partners from „I kveld med Ylvis“ Magnus Devold and Calle Hellevang-Larsen.
-          Us four take turns in being the main host, and when I have the position, the others don’t know what is going to happen. They just have to improvise and go along as good as they can. It’s fun to see the anxiety in others‘ eyes, Bård admits.
-          It’s also fun to sit down in my chair and be open for everything, adds his brother.
On the board behind them there is a scribble of ideas full of notes with guest or secret written on them, but nothing about who is coming or what is to be done. The planning has therefore been challenging.
-          It is logistically challenging. We sit in our respective rooms and plan. There are many e-mails we had to hide from each other and it required tons of brainpower to work like this, Bård admits.
Played with a fox
Those who follow the brothers on social media may have seen that one of the fox artists utilized corona-time to play with an actually fox. There are many fox dens on Ormøya in Oslo where Vegard lives.
-          Some of the foxes have become very approachable and receive food from the neighbours. They have almost become tame. One day when I was standing outside a fox came. When I threw a ball the fox ran after it, picked it up and dropped it again to play. It was fun, says Vegard, but adds that the fox didn’t make particularly many sounds.
-          He said nothing, but we have found out that what foxes say sounds like cats being beaten to death.
Neither of the brothers is actually interested in foxes, even though Ylvis will always be associated with the song (and children’s book) which made everybody wonder about what the fox actually say. But now the brothers consider the experience of playing „What does the fox say“ on stages all over the world absurd.
-          It‘s quite funny when you can live off being an artist as a joke, says Bård while Vegard tells how strange it felt when the duo was on MTV award show in Amsterdam. They sat next to Ariana Grande, among numerous celebrities, but nobody knew who they were before they were supposed to go on stage and had to put on fox costumes.
-          Then suddenly everyone was looking at us and Miley Cyrus came and jumped on my back, Vegard laughs.
-          It is a bit nice that one can put on and off celebrity status, continues Bård. It was at its worst for a year, and that is exactly the right amount of time. We got to see how surreal and in many ways idiotic the circus is. It’s quite nice for things to be as they are now.
Received a porn offer
After the foxy success the duo also got an offer from more shady sources and Dagbladet has earlier written that Ylvis got an offer to make a comedy porn for the biggest porn company in Europe and USA, xHamster.
-          Yes, we received an e-mail from xHamster but we didn’t not make contact. But it’s flattering, Bård smiles.
-          Yeah, porn grows quickly these days. It has become mainstream, so maybe that is where we will go, his brother jokes.
Award in Cannes
The brothers have become comedy veterans and can celebrate 30 years as a comedy duo in October, when they received their professional breakthrough with „Ylvis – a cabaret“ in Bergen already in October 2000. They both think that the IKMY has been one of the highlights of their projects, but they still left the programme in favour of making new things in 2016.
-          We are a bit spoiled by being in a industry where there often is a connection between how much fun we have at work and how good the concept becomes. We have always shifted the course when we begun to get bored, and after 5 seasons of IKMY became a bit too safe, Bård admits.
After IKMY the duo found success with their peculiar musical-documentary project „Stories from Norway“, a concept which was awarded the best comedy programme at Gullruten 2018 and received the awaed for best comedy concept at the International format awards (MIPTV) in Cannes in 2019. Next time the brothers sit on an international plane might be in order to make a version of this programme in another country. But the comedians keep their cards close to my chest, both in regards to an international version or if it would be something new in Norwegian.
-          Such projects také long time to work out and it isn’t easy to get started with season two, says Bård.
-          We are hoping to také the concept to new places but so fat it is a side-project that we have, says Vegard.
The duo has no plans to celebrate the 20th anniversary and they aren’t much concerned that they are in or nearing their 40s.
-          We have always found joy in throwing ourselfs into deep water and therefore we don’t feel so sat (?), says the younger one.
-        Yes, we always come up with something new. And we don’t have an idea what the next thing might be, says the big brother.

• Max Manus
Maximo Guillermo "Max" Manus DSO, MC & Bar was a Norwegian resistance fighter during World War II, specialising in sabotage in occupied Norway. After the war he wrote several books about his adventures and started the successful office supply company Max Manus AS.
Born on December 9th, 1914 in Bergen, Norway His father's name was originally Johan Magnussen, but he changed his name to Juan Manus after living several years in foreign (mainly Spanish-speaking) countries. After many years of extensive travelling, Manus returned to Scandinavia before the outbreak of World War II, upon which he soon joined up with the Norwegian Army and went to fight in a volunteer detachment with the Finns against the Russians. Manus returned to Norway upon hearing the news of the German invasion on April 9th, 1940. He fought during the Norwegian campaign, after which he decided to return to Oslo and work underground against the occupiers, both organising a resistance movement, illegal public propaganda and the manufacture of weaponry.
His work was effective, and he soon became a wanted man by the Gestapo. He was eventually captured and was injured trying to escape. He had to be treated in the main Oslo hospital. The doctor at the hospital lied to the Gestapo officers, saying Manus needed treatment for a broken back, an injured shoulder and a serious concussion. The truth, however, was that he was only bruised and had a light concussion. After 27 days, with the aid of a nurse, he managed to escape through a second-floor window using a rope. In a dramatic escape, he crossed the border into Sweden. By then, the Soviet Union had entered the war against Nazi Germany, so Manus travelled through the Soviet Union, Turkey, Arabia, by ship via Cape Town to the US, to eventually return to fight in Europe.
He reconnected with the Norwegian military in the US and went on to further training in Canada, before crossing the Atlantic again to Belfast, then England. There, and in Scotland, he trained further and developed professional skills in sabotage and undercover work. He was then required to learn parachuting and was dropped in the forests near Oslo with a sabotage team. In Norway, he resumed his organizational work and made various sabotage attempts on ships in the Oslofjord with home-designed limpet mines and even 'swimmer-assisted torpedoes'. The former were the more successful, sinking and damaging some vessels. It was a long but intense learning process of great practical difficulty and danger. He made numerous hazardous trips back and forth across the border to Sweden, where he was able to get a respite from the constant mental and physical pressures of being undercover. Many of his comrades-in-arms were killed, captured and tortured, but Manus managed to survive through a combination of determination and luck, with some very narrow escapes.
Shortly after the end of the war, Manus wrote two books about himself. The first, Det vil helst gå godt ("It Usually Ends Well"), describes some of his enterprising and event-filled wandering and working in the jungles of South America and Latin America. Manus' second book was Det blir alvor (It Gets Serious), in which he continues the saga of his resistance work and personal successes in the 1945 sinking of two large vessels of great importance to the German war machine. When peace was declared, Manus found himself chosen to be the personal protection officer of the then Crown Prince of Norway on his triumphal parade in Oslo, and then also with King Haakon VII. This was a great honour, and he was lauded as one of Norway's most resilient and successful fighters, aged only 30 at the time.
Manus went into the office supply business after the war: in the fall of 1945, he and Sophus Claussen went to the United States to set up contracts for office machines. Together they started the company Clausen og Manus. In the years after the war, Manus also hired people who had been convicted for collaborating with Nazi Germany. Manus did this after internal discussions and was motivated by a wish for reconciliation, as well as professional considerations. In 1952, the company was split into Sophus Clausen AS and Max Manus AS which now distributed Olivetti and Philips office machines. The company still exists today. After retirement, Max moved to Spain with his wife Ida Nikoline. Max died there in 1996 aged 81.

What Is a Cortado?
A customer walks into your coffee shop and orders a cortado. Depending on your perspective or where you are in the world, you could give them many drinks. For some, a cortado is a certain ratio of coffee to steamed milk. For others, it’s a small flat white or latte. Some even say it’s up to the customer.
With so many opinions on what a cortado is, there’s plenty of room for miscommunication – whether you want to order one, or serve it to customers. Despite this, it remains a coffee menu staple – but due to a variety of factors, it might not be for long.
Keep reading to explore the many existing variations of the cortado, and what the future could hold for them all.
You may also like How to Adjust Espresso Extraction & Create New Recipes
Many serving sizes, ratios, and presentation styles exist for the Cortado.
Not much is known about the cortado’s origins, apart from the fact that it comes from Spain’s Basque Country. The term cortado, or cut, refers to the milk cutting through the intensity of the espresso, toning down its acidity while retaining the coffee’s flavour.
Traditionally it’s served with little froth and a 1:1 milk to espresso ratio. The milk is steamed until a very light foam is created before being added to the espresso, and is served in a small glass with a metal ring base and a metal wire handle. Based on its appearance, it’s often confused with an Australian/New Zealand flat white, macchiato, or piccolo latte.
Nino Tusell is the Owner of Tusell Tostadores, a roastery in Barcelona, Spain. He says, “In Spain, a cortado is one shot of espresso plus a little milk. [It] could be a ratio of 1:1 or 1:0.5, [with] less milk than coffee most of the time.” Visit Spain and you’re likely to be presented with this traditional form and ratio. However, venture further abroad, and you’ll encounter other versions of the drink.
The recipe for a cortado always starts with fresh shots of espresso. Credit: Rea Café
The Cortado Around the World
A Specialty Coffee Association article on milk-based drinks admits that “While the idea of standardisation is attractive – we all want a standard to work from – it’s important to understand that [drinks] are a product of culture.” For the cortado, this is especially applicable.
Often, its ingredients depend on what the customer requests. Camilo Cárdenas is a barista at Brew92, a café and roastery in Saudi Arabia. He says, “Traditionally [the cortado] was just black coffee and a small dash of milk, hot or cold. Then, when people asked for it in coffee shops, it got adapted as an espresso with a small quantity of steamed milk. In my workplace, we serve it with a double shot and steamed milk. [It’s] a bit smaller than a flat white”.
Adrian Valentine Yong is a roaster at Malaysia’s Mountain Coffee Roasters and says, “I’ve met a few people who order cortados, and each of them interprets it differently… It’s how we make an espresso macchiato (double espresso with a dash of milk). Another type… would be similar to a flat white (double espresso and warm milk). I’ve also experienced people who request half-and-half (equal parts heavy cream and milk) with a double espresso, [and] some ask for ristretto shots.”
For others, it’s all about the ratio. Paula Chaverri Echandi, the owner of Café Sikëwa in Costa Rica, says “[The] cortado as I know it is one espresso plus one ounce of hot milk.” Bruno Danese is the owner of Japan’s Hoccino Coffees, and says it’s “1:1 espresso and steamed milk… a cortado can be as small as three ounces or as big as 16 ounces, as long the coffee to milk ratio remains the same.”
Other baristas and coffee professionals have different ideas. Frederik Westborg Schiøtz, an Educator at True Intent Coffee in Denmark, says it’s a “Double-shot [with a] minimal amount of foam, preferably with no latte art.” Lanz Castillo, owner of Candid Coffee in the Philippines, says it’s a one-ounce double ristretto with two and a half ounces of steamed milk, while Melaleuca Head Barista Johnsy La Jessica Sartiani says that in Italy, it’s called a macchiatone and consists of a single espresso shot with milk, served in a 50 ml cup.

Significant Variations
As the cortado spread from Spain to cafés around the world, its recipe evolved to meet the needs of local consumers. A significant change it underwent occurred when it reached the USA. Here, serving sizes for coffee beverages have steadily crept up over the past half-century, and it’s not uncommon to find 20-ounce beverages on offer at US coffee shops.
A famous variation of the cortado is the Gibraltar, which Time Out USA says was invented by the Blue Bottle Coffee Company in San Francisco in 2005. This variation is served in a four and a half ounce Libbey Gibraltar glass tumbler, and features two shots of espresso and two shots of steamed milk. For this reason, many third-wave coffee shops find the Cortado synonymous with this glass.
Rodolfo Ruffatti Batlle is Managing Director of a green coffee import business in Berlin, and says that many popular versions of the Cortado exist, including the Cuban cortadito. This version is popular in Cuba and Cuban immigrant communities. Translated as “little cut”, it starts with Cuban espresso, which is a dark roast espresso whipped with spoonfuls of sugar to create a caramel coloured shot with a thick foam. To this, frothed milk is added, with the option to thicken the drink by replacing the milk with evaporated milk for a treat or in place of dessert.

Mainstream Adoption of The Cortado & Its Future
As the cortado made its way to major coffee chains such as Starbucks, Costa Coffee, and Café each one developed their own take on it. The Starbucks cortado is made with two ristretto shots topped with milk, while Costa Coffee (the world’s second-largest coffee chain) describes their cortado as “small and luxurious”. Café Nero, the fourth largest chain in Europe, prepares theirs with 1:2 parts espresso to milk and 0.5 cm of micro-foam.
Increasing prices may be why the relatively smaller Cortado remains on menus today, as some businesses move to cut costs by hiking prices and shrinking sizes. Costa Coffee recently reworked its serving sizes and prices in certain stores, based on industry trends and consumer feedback – possibly indicating a move towards smaller drink sizes with a premium price tag.
Mike Chapman owns the 1914 Coffee Company in Canada, and acknowledges that inconsistency over serving sizes, ratios, and volumes can get frustrating for coffee shop owners. He says, “Some days I want to rename my café The Metric Café where it would be up to [the customer] to detail specifically what [they] want… and be charged accordingly.” Talor Brown, the Owner of Talormade Oslo in Norway, says that “[A cortado] can be anything from a macchiato to a latte, and it’s maddening to cost.”
If dairy consumption continues to plummet as it’s been doing for the past few years, it may fall out of favour with customers and coffee shops alike. Cargill, an international company in the food, agriculture, nutrition, and risk management sector, released a White Paper in 2018 stating, “Consumer attitudes about dairy are changing around the world… usage… has been in decline over the past two decades as consumers – particularly in dairy’s most prominent markets – act in response to worries over allergens, hormone usage and perceived unhealthfulness of some dairy products.” Steamed dairy milk gives the cortado its silky texture, low viscosity, and creamy mouthfeel, which means that cortados made with alternative milk could fall short.
With so much confusion surrounding what a cortado is, coffee shops might decide to remove titles altogether. Research indicates that many customers are confused over the number and complexity of coffee drink options presented to them. To simplify orders and pricing, coffee shops might move towards asking customers to describe their desired drink instead.
Two cortados served in Libbey Gibraltar glasses.
It’s apparent that the Cortado has many distinct variations, and that what you order (or serve customers) will depend on where you are in the world. Use this exploration of what the Cortado is to create a personal recipe that suits your unique tastes – or that of your customers.

Making future transport more climate friendly
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Trøndelag County transport company AtB introduced 36 electric buses to the Trondheim bus system in August. This is one of the projects that researchers will be collecting data on and analysing. Credit: Idun Haugan/NTNU
The world’s transportation network is constantly growing. “Green asphalt” and sustainable bus transportation will ease the environmental impact of future transport routes.
The EU has greenlighted two major transport projects for the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and SINTEF, Scandinavia’s largest independent research institution, in cooperation with Chinese and European universities. “Green asphalt” and sustainable bus transportation will help make future transport routes more climate friendly.
Norway’s largest current road project is the E39 Coastal Highway Route, which stretches from Kristiansand to Trondheim. The ongoing project will make the route ferry-free and shorten the driving time between locations along this route.
China’s giant investment in transport and infrastructure is referred to as the “New Silk Road” and extends transport routes across several continents. We will return to this in more detail later.
These major transport initiatives raise the question of how they will affect both the climate and the environment.
“It’s challenging to facilitate more transportation and reduce climate emissions simultaneously, but transport and trade are bound to increase in the future. What is important now is to make the transport systems as smart and climate-friendly as possible,” says Carl Christian Thodesen.
He has headed the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at NTNU for the past six years and has been central to the collaboration with Chinese research groups. He was also instrumental in developing two major EU projects that received the green light from the EU just before the summer.
“We recognize that the world’s infrastructure is growing extremely fast and that we have to think smart and be climate smart. The construction and transport sectors account for 40 percent of CO2 emissions and energy consumption today. We have to drastically lower this rate,” says Thodesen.
“Thinking sustainably also gives us a competitive edge. Climate-smart solutions will be prioritized and preferred in the future,” he says. Thodesen took a position as dean of the Oslo Metropolitan University this autumn.
Cooperation strong in transport sector
The collaboration between Chinese universities, NTNU and SINTEF began in 2017, and took a solid step further during a visit by Norwegian researchers and educators in April 2018.
We had long thought about doing something with China. What’s happening in China when it comes to transport and construction is enormous, and the universities have incredibly good lab facilities,” says Thodesen.
SINTEF Bygg and NTNU transport researchers have now established collaborative efforts with Chinese researchers at universities in Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing and Wuhan.
They are working on issues such as:
The circular economy in the transport sector. For example, industrial waste materials are used for filling potholes in roads
Materials and road surface. How asphalt can be optimized to withstand wear and harsh climate conditions
Bridge structures, including floating bridges and fixed bridges
Tunnels, both through mountains and under water (fjords in Norway and rivers in China)
Driverless vehicles
Electricity transport
Rail transport
Through the eye of the EU needle
SMUrTS and HERMES are acronyms for the two EU projects for which NTNU and SINTEF have won EU research funding. They are being led by NTNU and SINTEF respectively, and are part of The Sustainable and Liveable Cities and Urban Areas call.
Electrifying the transportation sector is an important step towards making transport more environmentally friendly. Several countries are starting to electrify buses in urban areas. In Norway, the largest cities have started the transition to e-buses.
The SMUrTS project aims to help authorities in different countries develop an approach to improving the electrification of public transport systems and making the transition from conventional buses to electric buses as smooth as possible.
SMUrTS stands for Sustainable Mixed Urban Transit System with electric and conventional buses.
Plenty of obstacles ahead
However, replacing conventional buses with electric buses is no quick fix. As of today, electric buses still face numerous challenges, including:
range limitations
loss of battery capacity
battery charge time
SMUrTS is working to find solutions for electric buses in extreme conditions, such as in the tough Nordic climate and in extremely large cities.
Tumblr media
Beijing’s streets are congested with everything that moves — mopeds, bicycles, cars and rickshaws, to name a few —  and distances are great. Credit: Idun Haugan/NTNU
“In Norway, the cold climate is a challenge in terms of battery capacity. Tests on Tesla cars in the United States show that battery capacity is reduced by 40 percent in the winter,” says Chaoru Lu at NTNU. Lu is a postdoc at NTNU and was educated at Beijing Jiatong Universtity and Iowa State University. Lu and NTNU associate professor Trude Tørset are the SMUrTS project managers.
In megacities like Beijing, long distances are a challenge in terms of battery capacity.
“During this transitional period, until we overcome the limitations of e-buses, it’s more realistic to develop a city transportation system with a mix of conventional and electric buses. That way you can maintain the service standard of the transportation network,” says Lu.
Research needs to be useful for relevant actors
Since electric buses are relatively new, data collection and information is needed on how e-buses are working and how the transition from conventional buses to electric buses is going.
The researchers will be collecting a variety of data from the public transport company AtB in Trondheim, which this autumn inaugurated 36 electric buses in the transport network.
“Our goal with the research is to make a difference for the actors who are working on public transportation. This means that our research and our analyses need to provide useful information that ATB can use in transitioning to electric buses,” says Lu.
AtB finding research valuable
AtB, the transport company in Trøndelag County, where NTNU is located, thinks that the transition to electric buses has gone well so far.
“Clearly, challenges inevitably come up that you haven’t foreseen or planned for when undertaking something new. But we haven’t faced more challenges than you’d expect when making these kinds of changes,” says Tom Nørbech, division manager of technology and mobility services at AtB.
One challenge of switching over to electric buses, according to Nørbech, is that you no longer get your energy from filling stations but from charging stations, so you have to build a new and completely different type of infrastructure.
He thinks access to the SMUrTS analyses of what AtB does is important in this transition. The project is being conducted at “a high professional level, by people who are at the forefront of this type of research. It’s clear that both the analyses and access to the expertise of the collaborating partners are very valuable to us,” he says.
Models adapted to different cities and countries
This research project plans to collect data on environmental benefits, costs, efficiency, energy consumption on electric buses and on conventional buses, and the influence of the weather and climate on energy consumption.
“We’re looking at the big picture, and data from multiple fields gives us a bigger picture of how best to plan. Based on the data we collect, we’ll create models that we can customize for public transit companies to help solve their challenges,” says Lu.
The researchers also have access to data from Beijing, where large distances are a challenge in terms of battery capacity. For megacities like Beijing, the researchers are developing specific models based on the data and challenges that such cities have.
“We’re finding that the interest and need for electricity-based transport are strong around the world. Technology is evolving rapidly and transportation systems are changing really quickly. That’s why we need a new green transportation policy soon,” he says.
The research will run for three years and has a budget of almost NOK 9 million (€ 877,000). NTNU is leading the project, and the collaborating partners are from China, Sweden and Norway.
Green asphalt
HERMES is the second research project to come through the eye of the EU needle, led by SINTEF.
In Europe alone, more than 275 million tonnes of asphalt are produced each year for road maintenance and rehabilitation. This results in high resource consumption and the release of large amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.
“HERMES is developing a new methodology in order to reduce the climate impact of road maintenance and rehabilitation. The goal is to find and choose the best available technology and strategy with the lowest cost to the environment and society,” says Terje Kristiansen of SINTEF, who is leading the project.
To develop the new method, researchers will study and analyse infrastructure in selected locations in Norway, China and Austria. The project partners come from these three countries.
Analysing the life cycle of asphalt
Tumblr media

HERMES aims to develop a practical method for grading “green asphalt,” based on the Principles of Life Cycle Assessments (LCA).
LCA is a life cycle analysis method and a technique for mapping environmental impacts associated with all stages of a product’s life: from raw material extraction through materials, production, use, maintenance and disposal or recycling. The method is used to analyse and assess what can then be done to reduce the environmental impact.
“The new method we’re developing will make it much easier to see how the different elements of road construction contribute to pollution from a life cycle perspective. This insight will enable us to gain a better understanding of the reduction potential by implementing various measures on the material, construction and operation sides,” says Kristensen.
Creating a climate account for asphalt and road maintenance will make it easier to see where environmental benefits can be obtained.
“Being able to have an impact on climate reductions in China will make a big difference worldwide,” Kristensen says.
EU and China
“China has a high level of expertise in technology and research and is a growth market. We’re seeing that China is increasingly important for the EU and that research cooperation between the EU and China is becoming more active. That is why it’s also important to build up our China expertise,” says Kristensen.
Such expertise is created through collaborative projects like HERMES and SMUrTS.
The research project has a budget of just over NOK 11 million (€ 1,117 263) and will also run for three years. The project emphasizes the exchange of personnel between the EU and Chinese partners.
The Silk Road—China’s major transportation project
The Silk Road has its origins many centuries back in time. This was the name for a number of trade routes that ran between Europe, China / Asia and the Middle East. The route network stretched across 6,000 km and derived its name from the lucrative trade in Chinese silk. The trade route was established during the Chinese Han Dynasty (206 BC—220 AD).
In addition to trade, the Silk Road led to widespread cultural exchange between different countries and continents.
Business traveler and explorer Marco Polo from Venice contributed greatly to making the Silk Road and the East known to Europeans. In the 13th century, he embarked on a lengthy expedition to the Middle East, Mongolia and China with his father and uncle.
After about 20 years abroad, and bearing many experiences and new knowledge, they finally returned home. The East was mysterious and unfamiliar to Europeans at that time, and Marco Polo’s journey along the Silk Road became widely known through the travelogue Livre des merveilles du monde (Book of the marvels of the world, commonly called The Travels of Marco Polo in English), which became very popular.
The new Silk Road
European countries’ desire to trade directly with China was the main motivator for discovering a sea route to China. In the year 1480, Portuguese ships rounded the Horn of Africa for the first time. The Netherlands and the United Kingdom followed in the 17th century.
Until the beginning of the 19th century, China was regarded as the richest and most sophisticated of all civilizations on earth.
Trade and goods transport are also the main reason for China’s new giant transportation concept called “The New Silk Road.” It consists of several routes, on both land and water. The ambition is to create a continuous transport connection—by road, train and ship—between China and the rest of the world.
The project goes by the names One Belt, One Road (OBOR) and Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
The transportation network will consist of:
a continuous transportation route across China from east to west
a tie-in to the original Silk Road route through Central Asia and the Middle East
a link to the Trans-Siberian transportation route through Russia and to the Baltic States
a water way via the Indian Ocean that strengthens the transport route from China to the coast of Africa, where China is starting to establish itself in a big way
a water route via the Suez Canal to the Mediterranean countries and Europe
This is being called the world’s largest infrastructure project. China’s powerful leader Xi Jinping launched the worldwide project in 2013, and many steps have already happened since then.

Tumblr media
Hi guys! I’m a Norwegian creator based in Trondheim - soon moving to Oslo - with a passion for creating creative confidence. I’m also the founder of the company Clash Of Colour which is a creative production company with that exact goal! ^^
I’m actually new to tumblr , so please be nice, and I’m really looking forward to posting and sharing my journey here as a creator. I want to be transparent to help others get a more realistic view of how it is to be an artist.
The niches i work in are quite a few. I find it hard to choose one thing to call myself, so my colleague said that the title multi visual artist would suit me. I feel this post makes me look a bit stiff, I promise I’m not. I’m a dork. My main fields are art as in painting and drawing, as well as photography and writing. Which is why I start this blog. My second blog actually.
For four years I dreamed about having something, a company that was mine, that I could use to help other people overcome what I have struggled with in the creative parts of life. If you are creative, which in my opinion every one are, you might have felt the imposter syndrome. Comparing your art, your painting, music, photo etc with professionals that are way better than you. Feels like shit doesn’t it? I felt like shit at least. A big bag of shit. This led to extremely toxic and destructive thinking about my art. I hated it. I wished I was better, faster and thought I had no talent what so ever.
I was stuck in this mindset for many years. The society made me feel even worse because if I tried sharing my art, even family would criticise and judge when I, as a fragile creator, could need some positive feedback. SO i hid. I hid, and didn’t touch any artistic stuff for so long.
BUT a sunny day I moved to Trondheim, applied for a drama bachelor and got accepted. The first time I met my class it was full of vastly different people. You could sense by a mile away that this room was filled with creative minds almost bursting, and I didn’t feel like i belonged. At the end of the introduction, we did an exercise. We should present ourselves to another person and take their name in the next presentation and if we fucked up we were told to raise our hand and yell I MADE A MISTAKE! Because of my past experiences with how people reacted to failure, I was expecting booing or silence. But to my surprise they APPLAUDED and cheered! I was so shocked. And confused. They were happy that we made a mistake? Why? Am I joining a the crazy bunch?
Turned out that yeah, I did join the crazy bunch. At least if crazy is embracing failure as a part of a creative prosess, or any prosess. Acknowledging that failure was a step to success. I have never felt so safe as I felt in that room. And through learning about creativity and how every individual has different perspectives on the subject made me realize a need for more communities like that.
SO I hope you will be a part of this community where we elevate each other, creating creative confidence and encourage people to be creative.

Addressing the Current Talent Crisis in Shipping and Logistics
The transportation and logistics industry has seen an exponential increase in demand as the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic continue to shift consumer behavior. Unfortunately, global organizations still suffer from a lack of skilled labor to fill open roles. Logistics management teams are facing immense pressure to optimize their operations and deliver on customer promises while navigating a number of unprecedented obstacles.
All hope is not lost, however. Leaders and mid-level managers simply must adopt a creative approach towards solving problems in order to outperform competitors.
Adapt to Technology of the Future
Technology is driving changes to the way goods and services are moved, stored, and delivered from organization to end consumer. The digital evolution of the logistics sector is only beginning. Blockchain, automation, and artificial intelligence are all making waves through the industry because of their ability to save businesses a significant amount of time and capital.
Carriers and shippers are adopting these digital tools at peak levels to support their operations. According to a recent study, 87.5 percent of organizations indicated that embracing new technologies were necessary to compete in the workplace. The coronavirus pandemic has been an awakening to many legacy supply chains, forcing logistics professionals to strategize new ways to complete operational tasks and avoid disruption.
Establish Formal Training Programs
Change management should be a key consideration as logistics companies continue to improve their technology stack. Employees must get acclimated to new equipment in order to effectively incorporate it into their workflow.
Training is often only viewed as a benefit to workers, which is why these programs are the first to go in times of economic distress. Treating formal training as an investment, however, creates a greater incentive to align these programs with critical business objectives and will lead to better equipped, more efficient employees.
Stimulating a culture of continual learning is a positive externality of establishing these programs as well. Formal training presents a valuable opportunity to inspire young talent and provide a clear development path for new hires. Despite this, nearly 1 in 4 organizations indicate that education is missing from their employee engagement strategy.
Utilize Data to Improve Employee Retention
Global organizations have suffered from massive rounds of employee resignation since the onset of the pandemic. The key question business leaders should ask themselves is: why? Taking a data-driven approach towards answering this query allows companies to quantify the problem and accurately identify root causes.
After clarifying the specific issues that are driving employee turnover, companies can then develop a customized approach focused on rectifying the negative trend. For example, if leaders discover that new hires are most at risk of resigning within the first six months of their start date, pairing them with a senior employee may reduce turnover by providing extra support throughout the onboarding and transition phases.
The challenges facing many companies in the logistics and transportation industry will likely remain for the foreseeable future. Mitigating the harmful effects of these issues will not be simple, but is possible with a shift in mindset among business leaders and managers. Organizations that analyze the market consistently and are best able to pivot with evolving conditions are certain to succeed in 2022 and beyond.
