It was quiet, too quiet.
The sounds of talking, playing and a child’s loud laughter had died down half an hour ago. ( y/n ) peeped through the window above the kitchen sink, seeing the worn-out pirate crew lying across the grass, trying to catch their breaths. Standing in the middle of the exhausted crew was ( d/n ), her daughter with a small pout, not even sweating.
It seems she was the cause of all of it.
( y/n ) had shaken her head before returning to the task at hand, cleaning, and reorganizing the home with the help of Law, who was now fully embracing his new labels, boyfriend, and more recently, a parental figure ( d/n ).
He wasn’t perfect, far from it. He was still...technically a wanted criminal. But ( d/n ) had come around to like him and accept him and the rest of his crew as part of her family.
More importantly, she had begun to view Law as the father figure she never had. He may not have been like the other fathers on the island or even been her real father. But neither of those things mattered to her, she liked Law for who he was.
Which is why she wanted to give him a present in order to celebrate him officially becoming part of the family. After a short time of pondering, she decided on a flower that only grows in the grove just down the stream from her home.
It’s not just any flower. To the citizens of this island, a flower of its kind is said to symbolize love and soothe the soul, as well as bring good luck. Her plan was to turn the flower into a resin pendant with the help of her mother. When he would have to take to the seas again, she wished for him to have a charm to watch over him and keep him safe, as well as something to remind him of the family he has waiting for him at home.
Her plan was perfect. She knew he would love it.
The only problem was the grove the flower had bloomed wasn’t the safest, especially not for a young girl. Not only that, but the flower had grown on tall trees, meaning she would have to climb her way up to them. The playful girl wasn’t worried about either, as she sneaked away from the Heart Pirates who were now asleep on the grass before skipping down the stream.
Not even five minutes after she had slipped away, Law had noticed it was too quiet.
“You okay there?” ( y/n ) questioned, dusting the furniture.
“Something isn’t right,” He answered, walking over to the window above the kitchen sink, looking across the lawn, and seeing his crew sound asleep. He had looked to Bepo, knowing normally ( d/n ) would use the mink as a pillow and blanket in one.
However, she was nowhere to be seen. Instead wrapped in Bepo’s arms was one of her toys. Panic instantly set in. He looked around again, hopefully, maybe he had just missed her.
There was just no sign of her. Not even a trace of where she could have possibly disappeared off to.
( y/n ) had immediately noticed how tense he had become, putting down her duster, “Law, what’s wrong?”
“( d/n )’s missing.”
The woman blinked, unsure if she even heard him correctly. It almost sounded like he said-
“She’s not in the yard, ( y/n ).” He bolted out of the front door, already screaming at his crew. ( y/n ) was not far behind him, trying to think of any place her daughter would have run off to by herself.
The Heart Pirates were quickly on their feet, confused about just what their captain was screaming about. That was until Bepo himself had screamed, seeing the toy wrapped in his hands was in fact not ( d/n ). The mink looked left and right, high and low, but the young girl was nowhere to be found. “WHERE IS ( d/n )?!”
It was then that the feeling of pure panic spread through the rest of the members. “HOW COULD YOU ALL LET HER OUT OF YOUR SIGHT?!”
“SORRY CAPTAIN!”
“CAPTAIN?! DON’T APOLOGIZE TO ME! APOLOGIZE TO ( y/n )!”
The pirates bowed lowly to her, ashamed, “WE’RE SO SORRY ( y/n )!”
“Hey, you guys it’s okay, really. We’re going to find ( d/n ), okay? She wouldn’t go that far. Let’s just find her together,” ( y/n ) reassured them, wanting to bring some kind of hope.
( d/n ) never wandered too far from the stream. It was the only way she remembered how to get home. And that’s what ( y/n ) had told the pirates, as they searched up and down the stream in search of the young girl for what felt like forever.
Until they had come to the grove. Bepo was the first to see her, letting out a loud cry of her name that gathered everyone’s attention. However, she didn’t respond, she didn’t even look in their direction.
The young girl had sat at the foot of one of the trees, with her head down. Law and ( y/n ) had rushed over, getting a closer look at her. Law was the first to see it.
She was hurt.
Her knees and arms were all scratched and cut up, blood seeping out of the small cuts. Even on her face flooded with tears, were a few scratches. The two had quickly kneeled next to her. ( y/n ) saw the flower in her daughter’s hand, that she clung to dear life. As she scaled the tree ( d/n ) was leaning against, seeing many more flowers of its kind.
She already knew how this happened.
Before either of the adults could speak, ( d/n ) had immediately apologized, jumping into her mother’s embrace. ( y/n ) rubbed soothing circles into ( d/n )’s back, “Hey, it’s okay. You’re safe.”
“I meant...I meant to come right back! I wanted to get this flower for Law as part of a present. But I fell and it really hurt,” She tried to explain through her tears. “Can we go home now?”
“Of course, ( d/n ).”
The walk back home was tense, at least for the Heart Pirates. While ( y/n ) and ( d/n ) were singing traveling songs, Law still couldn’t believe his crew let this happen. He tried to force a smile so ( d/n ) wouldn’t see just how furious he was, he didn’t want her to think he was upset with her. She had gotten herself hurt because she wanted to give him a present. He couldn’t help but feel a bit of guilt himself, which made him even more frustrated.
After arriving home, Law had swiftly taken care of her wounds and patched her up. She was no longer crying or in any pain. She was all smiles and giggles. Before long, she was up and playing with the others again, as if nothing had happened.
That didn’t keep Law from pacing back and forth inside of the house, ranting about the possible what-ifs to ( y/n ).
“I can’t believe they would be so irresponsible! She’s just a kid! They should have known better!” Law ranted.
“Law, it’s not their fault. It was an accident, and we found her before there was any real danger. Don’t be too hard on them,” ( y/n ) had attempted to defend them.
Though he wasn’t having any of it. “They are my crew and ( d/n ) was playing with them. So their watch is MY watch. Therefore everything that happened today was on my watch. And she hurt herself trying to give me a gift, I can’t help but feel responsible. And then seeing her tears, I felt...I couldn’t even describe what I felt. I just wanted to hold her and let her know she was safe.”
( y/n ) watched him carefully, lovingly, clinging to every word he spoke. Never had she heard anyone utter such words about her daughter. Never had she heard anyone care so much. It brought tears to her eyes.
He stopped his rant, seeing her teary-eyed, “Did I say something wrong?”
Anyone who had cared about her daughter this much was worth keeping around. She knew what she had wanted, and she knew she wanted him forever. There was only one question left to ask.
“Law, will you marry me?”
He blinked, “What?”
“I remember how scared I was to bring you here, to let you meet ( d/n ). I was scared you would judge me, or that you would run away when you finally realized what you were getting yourself into. But you...didn’t. You never even look back, even in the worst moments. No one has ever cared as much as you have. And now I know what I want.”
“And what you want is to marry me?” He questioned, sitting across from her at the table.
“Yes, I do. I know, I probably should have planned this better or maybe done it at a different time. But I had to let you know how I feel. So…Law, will you marry me?” She asked again.
“Yes, I will.”
Before either of two could get further, a few breaths of relief sounded from below the open kitchen window, followed by a few whisper-yells of:
“He said yes!”
“Let’s go!”
“Of course, he said yes. Were you guys doubting him?”
“A spring wedding would look so pretty!”
“Boring! Mom and I have lived on this spring island forever. My parents should go all out for their wedding, not some plain spring wedding. I vote winter wedding!” ( d/n ) wasn’t even whispering anymore.
Normally he would be furious, having been spied on during such an intimate moment. However, he focused on the words ( d/n ) had said.
‘My parents’
And there he sat grinning like an idiot.
Seeing the look of pure glee on his face, ( y/n ) couldn’t help but chuckle, “Seems like someone has gotten a pretty big promotion.”
