What the fuck is Higurashi

I have second hand knowledge from being online but have never actually played or watched Higurashi. Here is my perception of it. Correct me if I'm wrong

I know theres more characters than this. I dont know shit about them. Theres a girl with purple hair and horns i think. And the main protagonist guy who's generic as all shit. Is it a harem or not?

Plot wise, they all kill each other. I think. I think. I might be wrong. Why do they do that? Because they must cry. Or something. Also i vaguely recall seeing a fingernail scene where there's like. Torture and shit. And people say that Rika walked so that Yuri DDLC could run
