coolest thing to me about machines is that they don’t /see/. they can see. but they can’t /see/
there was a case awhile ago where i think the family of a man who was killed by a machine sued the parent company for murder.
not sure what to cw this for, so discussing the case of a man killed by a machine with a small description of the moments leading up to his death and his cause of death as well as an overall view of the case itself <3
anyways the details of the case go: Robert Nicholas Williams was 25 years old and working in the Ford Motor Company’s casting center in michigan they had a large machine responsible for transporting metal pipes and retrieving them. that day, the machines were slow due to an undiagnosed fault that would in time cost the company money, Robert was asked to climb into the shelves and to retrieve some parts himself, he did so. the machine was already near silent as it worked and eventually it silently moved into the area where Robert was, as a result it’s likely he never heard it. it happened to swing a pipe up behind him obliterating the back of his skull. cause of death being blunt force trauma, he died on impact. his coworkers, who were in the control room didn’t realize he was dead for about 30 minutes, until one of them discovered his body in the shelves, with the machine still doing its assigned and programmed job in the same area, completely oblivious to the life it just took. Police were called in to deal with the first murder case executed by a machine.
The family of Robert sued the parent company for 15 million for the manslaughter of Robert Nicholas Williams.
anyways references for anybody curious::
