Got in just under the wore for our last sitting at @vancouveralpenclub before it closes until 2025 for a complete rebuild! There, me and @beecee7280 had tge tried-and-true Jägerschnitzel (mit Rotkohl und Spätzle), and starters of sauerkraut balls (mit Bier und Käse Senft) and fresh-baked pretzel (auch mit dem Senft), and all chased with a stein of @krombacher Pils! 1983 German Spätlese, Weingut St. Bonifatius in Rheinland-Pfalz

Hi, there!

I live in Germany, and was walking through the street and saw a box of old booze "zu verschenken" ("to give away") in the street, and one of the bottles was this 1983 Spätlese "Maikammerer Mandelhöhe" from Weingut St. Bonifatius in Rüdesheim, Rheinland-Pfalz.

I'm a wine fan, but no expert, and especially not on aged German wines. I have a few questions.

Based on the fact that I found it on the street, I doubt it's been stored especially well! But I wonder if people might know about the specific wine, or what I might expect from opening up a 38 year old Spätlese. I've read that 1983 was a solid year (93/100), but supposedly now "past peak" (https://www.winespectator.com/vintage-charts/region/germany).

Is it correct to assume it's Riesling? Is it surely OK to drink? Would it need to be a top-class wine in order to last 38 years, or should a decent Spätlese be at least drinkable? Any other thoughts or suggestions are warmly welcome.

Had a mini Oktoberfest celebration at @vancouveralpenclub Deutsches Haus Restaurant, where I raised a pint of @hofbraeumuenchen Original, and its crisp bready malt, subtle citrus hop and effervescent head. Enjoyed it with a fresh-baked pretzel (with two types of mustard!) and the main spread of Paprikaschnitzel with fresh-made spaetzle and gartensalat. Und alles war gut! It's Schnitzel Sunday at @bestiewurst! Ma and I enjoyed healthy-sized pork Schnitzels with stylin' sides of Spätzle and Sauerkraut-style mixed veggies.
