Arrived at Refugio Piltriquitron and the tent is up. 30-40cm snow but not overly much. The trek up was tricky at times with an iced trail and a heavy backpack. Totally worth it!! Trekking Peninsula Mitre [460km, 60-days] Day 21 (187km from Ushuaia): Arrived here with 2 hours of light left and had just over 2km to go down to Puerto Español. Problem was that most of that was dense forest which was already dark, so trying to do it after sunset was not an option. I found a spot sheltered by some thick shrubs from the wind, on the turba (bog) which meant I also had access to water. The next morning (when this photo was taken), I headed down. It took me over 3 hours just to get to the forest and then still had to cross the Rio Bonpland. A lake with no name, north of Porvenir and the 3 large lakes - Laguna de Los Cisnes, Laguna Verde and Laguna Serrano. I spent a night and a full day here where over 200 Coscoroba Swans were on the lake. A couple of foxes went about their business not bothered about me. Late afternoon gaucho Eduardo Ojeda invited me to stay in his rancho for the night. With a fire roaring in the wood stove, we chatted over some maté (a traditional type of tea) and then coffee. A massive dinner with lambs meat was up next, Eduardo treating me all the time like an old friend. Showing off some of his handiwork, he pulled over the stirrups he’s finishing off. Once again, I was treated to the extreme friendliness and hospitality of the gauchos living out in the remote places. Day 26: following the Rio Sudamérica towards its source from Bahía Valentin, I had impressively managed to progress 13km that day; a day consisting mainly of chest-high marsh grass and water/mud up to upper thighs at times.
