Cross Guild Love Prompt:

Buggy has an impressive collection of red lip tint products. And considering that commercial makeup is relatively new, there's a lot of things to choose for someone as flashy as Buggy.

From satin, to matte, to shimmer, to glossy. From every possible shade of red to some edding onto black. Some Buggy would collect solely for the capsule they've been sealed in. (One was a compact, and another opens like a switchblade).

Some more favorable than others, but his favorite one always leaves traces and marks everywhere. On glass rims, to napkins, his own gloves, hell even the his pens if he's found nibbling on the tips.

At first, it annoyed Crocodile and Mihawk to hell and back, constantly spotting these stains and by how often Buggy had to re-apply it. But along the path of their growth together, they sometimes would catch the shape of the mark, notice how the bottom lip always looked wider than the top lip. Or catch how gently Buggy applied his lipstick, slow and methodical, almost akin to a ritual. And how he looked at peace when satisfied with the results. (They won't admit how pretty the clown looks in these moments).

Then, one day, in the middle of a meeting, Mihawk saw Buggy put down his glass after a drink, only to find no mark! He immediately points it out, Crocodile asks why the change, and Buggy sheepishly answers that his favorite tube is on its last legs, so he's saving it for special occasions. In the meanwhile, it's just matte from then on. (Buggy's curious as to how the fuck they notice that but he'd rather not know).

But this does not bode well with Crocodile nor Mihawk, not only cuz they find themselves miffed at the change instead of feeling relief, but rather unsettled by the use of the term "special occasions".

Time passes, they grow closer and fonder by their own means, and cue said special occasion arrives, their first date together.

They dress in their best, and they see Buggy (aside from wearing something absolutely smashing [Buggy, the Fran Fine of One Piece, my beloved]), he's got his lips painted as always but the large red smile is missing. It's just his natural lip line this time. Crocodile took note how Buggy's smile reached the eyes. He didn't want to admit the flips in his chest... at least not yet.

Their private dinner was a hit, dessert was decadent, and the three were immersed in conversation. But alas, they had to end it there, Cross Guild still had work in the morning, and Buggy needed to finalize an acrobatic routine for an upcoming show.

Mihawk was going to offer to walk Buggy back to his tent, he was cut-off by a pair of lips. "I can walk just fine by myself.~" Buggy answered cheekily before giving Crocodile a kiss as well.

Buggy got up and just before he left the room, "by the way," he look back and sends them a cheeky grin, "red is nice color on you two." A wink and he was out of there.

The two warlords were a bit confused on that statement but as soon as they looked at eachother, they knew.

Each man had a red mark on their lips like a stamp.... and they loved it.

Love that Buggy’s hording makeup, the clown probably cleans out the used makeup product containers that he’s interested by what they look like and at least one of each container of his most favorite makeup to keep. Got a small treasure box or two filled with them because he likes trying different types of makeup. Holy stars I can see Buggy just shaking his hand with that lipstick that opens like a switchblade with a happiest and goofiest grin as it flips open, looking like he’s ready to stab someone with it before he carefully puts it on.

Not Mihawk and Crocodile asking (or probably demanding actually) about the reason why Buggy doesn't have his normal lipstick on. That’s gonna be one hell of a awkward conversation because why do you say to that? Buggy being like, “Oh.. yeah, my favorite tub from Chroma Charm is on it’s last legs, hopefully the package of the lipstick is coming soon… Wait how do you know?!.. Wait again, nevermind, pay no heed of my questions.” Poor Buggy he has no idea why Crocodile and Mihawk are miffed, only that it might have to do with him, but he has no idea why.

Love the date scene! All of them are sad it had to end so soon, if there wasn’t much work to do, then I’m sure that first date would of ended a lot later. Also Buggy was smooth with that!

I have a headcanon that somewhere along the line Mulder started giving Scully massages after long days on her feet. I think we can all agree he would be very good at it.

“Don’t even think about discussing this case with me until I have a hot shower,” she said as she arrived to the hotel room in a bluster of irritable energy that crackled in the air.

He was sitting at the desk, parsing through a sizable stack of criminal profiles. He took off his glasses and turned around to watch his partner as she tossed her heels across the room and dropped her blazer on the corner of the motel bed.

“I’m exhausted,” she went on, “my feet ache. Hell, my whole body aches. And that might take the award for most disgusting autopsy I’ve ever done. I know I need food but I would estimate my appetite is gone for the rest of the week.” Knowing her laudable lack of squeamishness, it must have been bad.

She shut the bathroom door behind her. Shut, not slammed, he noted with relief. When she emerged 15 minutes later, her hair was wrapped in a towel and she was bundled in her pajamas under a white terrycloth robe.

“Okay, so what did you find?” She seemed to be in better spirits now.

“Nothing yet,” he groaned, pushing the stack of profiles away. “Why don’t you take a breather for the evening? I’ll order in. Maybe your appetite will come back if you have a warm meal in front of you.”

“In a bit. Right now I just need to get off my feet.” She threw herself down on the bed with a heavy sigh.

“Want me to leave?”

“No, it’s okay.”

He didn’t want to leave back to his own room but he felt like he was intruding on her private time, even though she had invited him to stay. Sort of. When he glanced over at her again, she was bent over on the bed rubbing her foot.

“Need a, uh, hand?” he ventured.

She gave him a long look. “You could get my foot cream from my toiletries bag,” she finally answered, tilting her head to the bathroom.

He moved to the bathroom and unzipped the vinyl bag that held all her magic potions. He recognized the expensive makeup brands from past relationships and had a peculiar feeling in his stomach at this moment of intimacy. He smiled as he read the bottom of a lipstick—“Cinnamon Toast.”

He had always been fascinated by the mysterious rituals of womanhood. Diana kicked him out of the bathroom when he tried to watch her put on her makeup and do her hair in the morning. "A woman has to have her secrets, Fox," she had told him with a sly smile.

“You get lost in there, Mulder?” she called from the bed.

“Sorry,” he called back. “Is this it?” He held up a small green tube.

“That’s face cream. Look for the foot cream.”

He held up a larger tube.

“No, Mulder, that's regular lotion. It says foot cream on the package.”

He returned to the bag, pushing aside a variety of cosmetic tubes and a couple tampons.

"A-ha!" he exclaimed. "Soothing for extra-dry skin," he read from the label. "With shea butter and camomile."

She had an amused look on her face when he returned to the bed and handed it to her.

"Are you sure you don't want me to?" he ventured. "I've been told I'm good at that."

She froze and he wished he could take it back. But then she said, voice cracking just a little, "Okay."

"Okay then." He tried to sound flippant, paired it with a glib grin. His own voice sounded strange to him.

He unscrewed the cap on the cream and scooped out a dollop, rubbing it between his palms until it was warm. Her eyebrow was raised at him and he felt paralyzed by her gaze.

"Well, come on then." She waggled her bare foot at him, shiny pink toenails catching in the overhead light. He hitched up his slacks and sat cross-legged on the end of the bed, pulling her foot into his lap. He heard her breath hitch as he started with slow circles on her arch. He froze.

"It feels good, Mulder. Keep going." He pushed his thumbs up the ball of her foot, rubbing the little crooks under her toes in succession while she gave happy little moans. The callouses on her heel felt like leather and greedily soaked up the cream. When he reached her achilles tendon, she gave an "ow!" then asked him to go harder.

He willed his blood to go anywhere but his crotch, thinking of anything he could to reverse the inevitable effects of those three words: "Go harder, Mulder." Flukemen, autopsies, Skinner naked and lounging in a "draw me like your French girls" pose. Crisis averted.

As he switched to the other foot, he noticed her rolling her head to stretch her neck.

"I can do your shoulders after," he offered.

"That would be nice." Her eyes were warm and alight with pleasure.

When he finished the other foot, she sat up and turned away from him, untying her robe and tugging it off her shoulders. His jaw dropped when he realized she had she started unbuttoning her pajama top.

"If you're going to do it, do it right," she chided.

"Um, should I get the non-foot lotion?"

She nodded.

He went back to the bathroom, shutting the door behind him to give her privacy. He splashed cold water on his face and scrubbed it with the hand towel, counting his breath to slow his heart rate. Five count on inhale, five count on exhale. He opened the door slowly, giving her plenty of time, before he realized he hadn't even remembered to grab the lotion.

When he returned, she was laying on her stomach with her back exposed and the robe bunched under her to hide the sides of her breasts. He settled on his knees to her side. He was used to straddling a partner when giving her a back rub but then again, it usually it ended up leading to something more.

He was timid at first, starting with giving her shoulder slow, deliberate squeezes.

"Jesus, you're tense."

"Does that surprise you?" She twisted her neck to peer at him out of the corner of her eye.

"Guess not."

Her bones felt delicate under his hands, which seemed much too rough to be touching her. Her skin was hot and softer than he could have imagined, her muscles taught.

"You are good with your hands," she mumbled into the pillow. Was she referring to what he said earlier? Or did she think about his hands? Touching her?

"So I've been told," he muttered. He could have sworn he saw her thighs clench in her pajama bottoms.

As he worked his way down her arm, she turned her head to face him, loosing her body from the robe just a bit so he could see the shadow of the side of one breast. He debated moving the robe back but didn't want to call attention to it. It wouldn't take much to make her shut down. And this...this was the best thing to happen to him in a long while.

"Mmm, yes, right there," she moaned as he worked his thumbs over her palms and down her fingers. Her hands were the roughest part of her body. Regular manicures couldn’t undo the damage of her job, all the tools she handled and the constant hand washing.

As he threaded his fingers through hers to push back her fingers, she closed her eyes with a smile.

"I can't believe I found a whole other use for you, Mulder. You've been holding out on me."

He chuckled and worked back through the tendons in her forearms. He forced himself to shut down a mad impulse to kiss the tender skin in her wrists.

They both jumped as her phone started ringing from the nightstand. It took them both a second to process that she had sat up. Even though he looked away immediately, he couldn't help but have seen her full breasts, the rosy pink of her aureolas, her nipples small and hard and exactly how he had pictured them. She scrambled to pull the robe over her chest and turned away from him to pick up the phone. 

"Scully," she snapped at the phone, tucking it between her her cheek and her shoulder as she fastened the robe around her.

She nodded as she listened to the person on the other line and moved over to the desk where she jotted down a couple hasty notes.

"There's been another body," she explained when she hung up. "We have to go."

She was all business now, disappearing into the bathroom and emerging fully dressed except for the blazer she picked up from the bed. As she slipped on her heels, she paused.

"Mulder?"

"Yeah?"

"I feel better now. Thank you."

He would warm himself by the thought of those six words for weeks to come.

Calum had approached you for the first time outside a bar in New York city. You were wearing some sort of modelesque outfit, tattoos on display, cigarette in hand. It was a scene straight out of an aesthetic blog; brick wall and dim but beautiful lighting framing the image in Calum’s mind.

He took notice of every curve, especially that of your lips, in an instant. Maybe he could write a song about you someday-- your black jeans, black boots, black tube top patterned with cherries, and red lipstick to pair was perfect. You were perfect.

You, of course, took notice of him too. Just like you had hundred of times before, when 5 Seconds of Summer played shows in the city and their posters were plastered all about, or your roommate freshman year would blast them during parties, and when you found yourself listening to his band even though you rarely admitted it. You had a thing for Calum, not that it counted until that moment he spotted you outside of the club. You were one student in the middle of a massive city. Dust.

Calum didn’t know how much time he would have before a fan would spot him and blow his cover, or a security guard would track him down and bring him back to some crappy VIP lounge. The poor guy just wanted a breather. Yet, there you were, taking his breath away in the best possible way. So he approached you, sweaty palms and high hopes.

“Do you have a light?” he asked you, keeping some distance.

You took note of the way his eyes twinkled, and how his breath hitched just a little before he let his words out. You almost thought he was nervous.

“‘Course.” You pulled a white lighter from your purse, fingering it towards Calum. “But I should warn you. Smoking kills.”

“And white lighters are bad luck,” he laughed, lighting his cigarette and falling against the brick of the club. “Especially for musicians.”

“Who needs luck,” you countered, cracking a smile and dropping the end of your smoke on the ground and crushing it beneath your boot. “When there’s fate in your corner.”

“Fate in my corner?” Calum let out a laugh, cocking an eyebrow at you. “Maybe, but I’m feeling pretty lucky, Cherry.”

“Maybe I need some luck.” You were trying to flirt, but Calum was out of his element. He was literally from a different world than yours, which lead you to question your decision to even attempt to flirt. But that didn’t matter. Not if luck, or fate even, had anything to do with it.

“It’s your lucky night, then,” he flashed a smile, finishing his cigarette too. “I’m Calum.”

“Y/N.” You stuck your hand out to shake his, noticing the twinkle in his eye as he smiled. “But I like Cherry better.”

You winked at him, and from that moment forward, the relationship that blossomed was inevitable. You and Calum would get lucky often, only ever in private, where you had every piece of him to yourself. There weren’t labels, or expectations, just the two of you.

Calum became your best friend— benefits implied, of course. He was the hottest fuck you’d ever had. It was like he knew your body better than you did. You had convinced yourself that Calum was some form of art, and your mission was to learn every detail. Before you even realized, you had memorized what made Calum tick.

But better than the sexual chemistry that bloomed, was the bond that you formed. The way you could coexist with Calum was beautiful. You spent countless hours together; smoking, or drinking, or listening to music, or your favorite, listening to Calum play you music. Your time with Calum was precious, and he was absolutely your favorite person. Arguments rarely happened. It’s like you both knew how lucky you were to be in each other’s lives.

When Calum was gone, however, things were different. He would be photographed with women regularly, and he dated a bit. You did too, of course. Calum wasn’t your boyfriend. He was your best friend. And while he could make your knees weak with the bat of eyelash, he didn’t own you. He wasn’t even around most of the time.

That’s what made your relationship work. At least, that’s what you told yourself. You were better on your own. You always had been. Your independence took ages to achieve. You worked so hard to be your own person; confident and striking, kind yet honest. You knew that being alone was working just fine. This was how things should be.

Especially because every time he came to town, he rocked your world in so many ways. Not only was the sex magical, but the way he held you made you feel safe. You loved every second you spent with him, and there was never a dull moment. He felt the same way about his time with you.

It was selfish, in the best and worst ways. You loved each other more and more every time you met. Which was also selfish, because it was something that you’d never admit. You were selfish. It was better this way. You were taking what you could get.

Calum was a rockstar, sure. And he toured the world. But to you, he was more than a rockstar. He was a confidant, a friend, a companion, and so, so much more. He was easily your favorite person, and if you could have had him just as he was— no money, no fame, nothing— you’d have done it in a heartbeat. Calum was someone that made you feel amazing all the time, no matter who he was or what he did. He was your Calum.

Like clockwork, though, Calum was forced to retreat back to his world. Tours, groupies, parties. His lifestyle didn’t match yours. Of course, you had a life, too. It just didn’t match up to that of a rockstar. But when Calum was with you, he didn’t have to be a rockstar. He was content being just Calum, which would’ve broken your heart to find out.

With album releases and press tours, not to mention world tours, he had very little time to come back to a place that felt like home. He was too busy, too famous, and too selfish for a relationship. That was the rule, especially after his failed attempts at relationships. But this time, he’d been away from you for longer than usual. And he missed you an awful lot more than he’d missed anyone in a long time. Touring had a way of making people forget just what home really felt like.

When you starting appearing in Calum’s dreams, he realized that it was time to take a step in a new direction. Things were starting to calm down. It was now or never, Calum. thought. And just like that, his plans for at least the next six months changed.

You were just making it home from your two morning classes when you noticed the sunflowers on the counter. Granted, as soon as you walked in, you could see the kitchen. Your apartment was tiny, so there wasn’t anywhere to hide them. Plus, these flowers weren’t meant to be hidden. They were meant for you to see; standing proudly on display in a beautiful vase.

“Cal?” You called out his name. No one else had a spare key to your apartment, and no one else would buy you flowers like that. It had to be him.

“The one and only.” He came out of your bedroom, Adidas track pants hung low on his hips, completely shirtless.

You ran to him, throwing your arms around his neck. This time, it had been more than three months since you’d last seen him. With the drop of their first new single in over a year and all of the touring and promo that came along with it, Calum was on the road more than ever before. You kept in contact pretty well, but it was hard. You missed him more than you would admit.

“You’re here,” you pulled back a bit, smoothing your hand to the side of his face. “And you bought me flowers.”

He pressed a kiss to your lips, smiling almost immediately. Then, he pulled back and shrugged, saying, “I hope you like them… I know you’re not like, super into romantic gestures but some guy was selling them and they made me think of you.”

“Because I’m so bright and beautiful, right?” you joked, pulling him into your embrace again. “But really, they’re beautiful. I love them. Thank you.”

You pressed a kiss to the base of his neck, holding him a little longer than usual. You’d seen each other naked many times, but this felt more intimate. Different.

He kissed the top of your head in response, holding you in his arms. “Something like that.”

Something was different about this encounter. It wasn’t heavy or anything, but the atmosphere was different. It was almost like meeting him for the first time all over again, like the slate was somehow clean. Despite the intimacy that you two shared, and the way you fit into him. He was so familiar, yet a stranger all at once. Maybe the distance made him feel farther away than you noted. Maybe this was supposed to feel different.

He could’ve held you just like that forever, so when you pulled away, Calum wanted to cling onto you again. It was like he couldn’t grasp that he was really back home after being away for so long. And, fuck, it hadn’t even been that long. He’d spent years touring nonstop, thousands of miles away from anything resembling home for months at a time. Now, he was trying to get back to a place that felt like home again. Not Australia, or even SoCal, but here. With you.

Selfish, selfish, selfish.

“Calum…” You couldn’t believe how handsome he looked. All beautiful, smooth bronze skin and black tattoos. “I can’t believe you’re here.”

Calum had never done anything like this before. He had never brought his bags to your apartment. He’d never given you flowers or showed up unannounced. Calum was like clockwork; you always knew when he would be back in New York. You’d even traveled to his shows a few times when he was upstate.

“Me neither,” Calum confessed. “I don’t know what I’m doing, Cherry.”

He used the nickname that he coined the first time you ever met him. He didn’t call you Cherry much, except for when you were under him… Calum cleared his throat, bringing your eyes back to his own; making his honesty feel like a burning in your throat. He didn’t do relationships. You didn’t do relationships. This right here? This felt like a relationship.

It was never like this. Your hookups before always started with a smoke sesh, maybe, and if not, a phone call at the very least. This wasn’t like that. This was meticulous, thoughtful. This was beautiful. It felt like you spent forever staring at Calum, a dazed smile plastered across your face.

You shrugged your jacket off, finally, and slipped off the same black boots you were wearing the night the two of you met. With butterflies in your stomach and a flush spreading across your skin, you pulled your top off, then stripped the jeans from your legs.

“How long are you in town?” Time was moving slowly as you walked around Calum, grabbing his hand and tugging him into your bedroom.

“I don’t know,” He pressed himself against you, bringing his lips to your own and stealing a chaste kiss. “The European tour starts in October.”

“That’s six months, Cal,” You were stunned. He couldn’t be serious. “You…”

“Six months.” He started placing kisses along your jawline, then your neck, then down to your shoulder. “I’m gonna be in town for six months.”

You brought his face level with yours, staring him down for a few seconds before connecting your lips. Your hands were in his hair and down his chest. His tongue was dancing with yours, his hands unhooking your bra and pulling his pants off. It was fast and messy, not quite as soft and beautiful as it could have been. This reunion was everything you needed— the perfect shift in your routine. You desperately needed to feel Calum close to you, his mouth devouring your skin, his fingers brushing over your body.

Six months. Chills spread across your warm skin at the thought. It didn’t even occur to you at the time that you had never spent more than a few weeks with Calum at a time. Six months sounded like an eternity after spending so long stealing moments with him so sporadically for over a year now.

He brought you to the edge of the bed, sitting so you could stand between his legs. He left wet kisses along your collar bones, leaving small bruises where he nipped at your delicate skin. He worked down your chest, drawing one of your small, sensitive nipples into his mouth. You moaned out, pushing your body closer to Calum’s.

“I want you.” You pushed Calum back, allowing him to scootch back a little before climbing over him. You straddled his waist, letting yourself grind against him through his boxers. “I want you so bad right now.”

He rolled so you were pinned beneath him on the bed. I am so in love with you, he wanted to say. You are a goddess.

But he didn’t say those things. Instead, he shook his head and smiled at you, his lips finding yours in a heated kiss once again. So many thoughts swirled through his head as he worked hour panties down your legs, then broke the kiss to remove his boxers.

“You are so beautiful,” he stood in front of you, his eyes examining your entirety. “I am so lucky.”

“I-“ you started to say, then shook your head. “It’s not luck.”

“It’s fate, then, yeah?” Calum hovered over you again, not giving you time to answer before he was greedily kissing your mouth, trailing down to your breasts, then stopping above your heat.

“Cal,” you moaned, yet he wasn’t even touching you. “Please.”

“I want to take my time with you.” His breath was hot on your pussy, his calloused hands rubbing the smooth skin on your thighs. “I’ve been dreaming about this.”

Before you could start begging, his lips started peppering long, sweet kisses to your sensitive skin. Still, he avoided kissing the one place that you were so desperate to have kissed. His mouth was so busy sucking at your skin that it almost didn’t matter; you could come undone if he just kept at what he was doing a little bit longer.

It was close to midnight when Calum finally woke up again. You were still asleep, your body intertwined with Calum’s limbs and your soft white sheets. Calum’s throat was scratchy and dry, and truth be told, he was itching for some nicotine. He hadn’t slept that well in months. Maybe even years, really.

Removing your arms from his his torso and your legs from his own as gently as possible, Calum eased himself out of your bed and sauntered towards the bathroom. He peed, then made his way towards the kitchen. In a way, Calum felt high. He was absolutely buzzing, and his cheeks were sore because his smile couldn’t seem to disappear.

In the kitchen, Calum made sure to pick up your jacket and move your boots, tidying up a tiny bit. Grabbing a glass from one of your cabinets and filling it with water, he sat on one of the stools at your counter and checked through the messages on his phone. He even tweeted a smiley face.

Just when he was ready to head back into the bedroom (hoping for a round two of whatever earlier was), he heard your phone ding. He wasn’t snooping. Not on purpose anyway. But the texts that lit your screen also lit a fire in Calum’s chest.

There were a storm of messages, all from the same guy. Nate. Who even was Nate?

You ditched on our date earlier and didn’t even give me a heads up? The first one read. Then, You know how good I make you feel, why are you playing so hard to get all the sudden?

There were probably twenty more, but the more Calum read, the more upset he felt. It was clear that there was some history between this Nate tool and you. His girl. But not his girl.

He didn’t even bother to grab the luggage from your room before he was out the door, calling an Uber and heading anywhere other than there. Betrayal weighed him down, and he even felt tears stinging his eyes. He didn’t realize that you were really dating other men. He didn’t realize that you weren’t really his. He should have followed his gut instinct and stuck to the rules. He should have let you remain an arms length away. He should have never overstepped the boundaries you clearly concocted.

But when you woke up no more than five minutes late to an empty apartment, your heart started to break in your chest. He couldn’t leave. He wouldn’t leave. By the time you thought to call him, minutes had passed. You saw the messages from Nate, a douchey guy in a few of your classes that you’d went out with twice (study dates, really) and planned to get coffee with that afternoon. With a plan to break things off, you made the plans last minute, knowing that Cal was coming home within the next few weeks (as if you could’ve even guessed that he would surprise you that day). You wanted to let Nate down in person, because you weren’t the type of person to ghost someone or leave questions unanswered. But clearly, he thought there was something deeper going on. You knew Calum was probably thinking that, too.

You tried calling Calum, texting him that you didn’t know what he read, or what he thought he knew, but he had to come back. You didn’t want to explain over text, or over a voicemail. There was too much to say, and your shaking hands and ugly crying wasn’t going to let you do that. You just wanted him to come back so much that it hurt, literally, in your chest and head and stomach.

But Calum didn’t respond, or even look at the messages, for that matter. He felt numb. Knowing you might show up at his apartment, he went the bar where he first met you, ordering whiskey and letting the liquor numb him even more. Calum wanted to erase you from his heart in that moment, so he settled on erasing you from his thoughts. Alcohol burned his throat and formed a pit in his stomach, and when he heard Youngblood playing in the bar, he was only even sadder.

It isn’t love unless it hurts, right?

Facing Our Making, Part 3: Makeup and Gender

Welcome to Part 3 of my makeup blog series! This week we’re going to poke at gender and makeup. But before I begin, let’s review parts 1 & 2, and check in about where we’re at:

1. Beauty standards are impossibly harsh and cause a lot of unnecessary pain.

2. Let womxn decide what they want to do with their own damn bodies and stay out of it. Unless they hire you for a consultation.

3. Wearing makeup is awesome

4. Not wearing makeup is awesome

5. Your gender presentation and basically any presentation of your body and behavior do not determine who you are and aren’t attracted to sexually. And no one is the (*^*^%^$#%$#&*&^&%% authority to determine that for you. If they try, remember that they’re judging and labeling you in relation to their own internal gender/sexuality struggles. More on this in today’s blog below.

6. How toxic masculinity ruins the day in relationship to makeup or not makeup needs to die, and YES womxn also support and host this behavior (internalized misogyny). Just because a person has a vagina or presents as femme does not mean they are exempt.

7. Womxn who wear makeup are not whores unless they are, in fact, professional whores. Professional whores keep the world turning, and bless em for it. The problem isn’t sex work. It’s violence against sex workers. Consider your complicity.  

8. Womxn are reclaiming the hell out of the word “Slut”, so don’t get caught being a dumb idiot who uses the outdated, violent, misogynist definition. 1000 years vagina dentata upon your entire household.

9. If you want sexual attention because you enjoy sex, then FUCK YEAH GIT IT!!!

10. “Pretty girls are dumb” is a myth that our society desperately seeks to nurture and maintain. This is rooted in dominance, power, control, and whorephobia. Stop it.

11. “Ugly girls are smart” makes no damn sense. Okay, yes I can see the backwards logic, but also if you listen to flat-earthers long enough you could even be like, “ok, I see where you’re coming from with that”.  

It is not lost on me that certain beauty trends and habits can trigger and enable body image problems, ranging in severity. After attending a panel discussion that featured a speaker from Media Girls Boston, I learned that girls as young as 9 are learning that they essentially need to brand themselves through social media so that they can merely exist. Saying this is a problem is an understatement.

I support makeup and rituals of adornment. I support a lot of things that, if used improperly with dangerous motivations, can result in severe consequences.

Understand that there’s a lot of nuance in subjects like this, and utilize your critical thinking brain when exploring such topics. Continue your personal research if you’re curious about any subcategory in this series that I have not addressed.

Okay! Let’s talk about this super important element of the art and ritual of beauty:

Gender!

To Marie Kondo this: This subject does not bring me joy, and I do not want to write about it, but I feel that I have a responsibility to not play floor-is-lava about it. It does not even bring me the type of righteous rage that fuels me to furiously complete a post. It fills me with doubt, insecurity, self loathing, trust issues, and a desire to disappear.

I need to say this because I know I am not alone in my feelings and experience. But I will keep it very brief because I’d like to move on.

I have experienced a lifetime of pain from the bullshit pressure the heteropatriarchy puts on female bodies. I never anticipated the heartache I would experience as a result of being judged and denied by fellow queers.

I am too butch, too unfeminine to be accepted as the right kind of woman in heteropatriarchal society. I make men question their sexuality, and I am the one made to suffer for it. I am too feminine for queers to believe and accept me when I tell them I’m genderfluid (which I have been, quietly and privately, my entire life). I am not feminine enough to be femme.

Too much woman. Not enough woman. Not woman. Not human. Once again, my body and my soul are everyone else’s to judge, determine, and own. Not mine. 

And no one wants to listen when we say the world hates women.

For the record, I still use she/her pronouns. I stand by my allegiance to the fullness and diversity of womxnhood in a deeply ferocious way. My reasoning for that is both very simple and very complicated. So I guess that just makes it very complicated. Ask me how.

Anyway, makeup.

About a month ago, I had wrapped a film shoot with some friends who flew up from Mexico. It was an incredible weekend that filled me up with so much bliss. On the drive back to Boston, I was chatting with my beloved friends and fellow Scarlet Tongue artists, Creature and Cass, about how much I enjoy the company of Mexican men. A large part of that is because it is refreshing to be around men who so easily embrace and express feminine qualities of articulating their emotions, accessing their emotions, gentleness and nurturing. Creature presented the important argument that such qualities don’t need to be classified as feminine or masculine; they’re simply personality and behavioral traits that anybody can have.

Such a point is absolutely crucial in untangling the oppressive nature of the gender binary.

Exercise:

The following traits have been classically designated as “masculine” or “feminine” behavior, but I’ve jumbled them together in the list below. Which traits do you believe belong to whom?

Hahahahah, I’m not going to give you the answer. It doesn’t matter.

Yes, hormones do impact some behavior. And YES, how we’re socially conditioned impacts which traits are more dominant. But the point is, there is an imaginary line between the two categories. The saddest reality is that, even though any human is capable of any of these traits on the list, society has determined that consequence and punishment must befall anyone who strays from their category. An enforced gender binary is dangerous.

Enter makeup.

Makeup has served infinite purposes throughout the course of history. It’s an incredible vehicle for expression, as well as radical social and political rebellion. Makeup has shaped entire movements of art, social justice, philosophy, and construction/deconstruction of body politics.

Your lipstick is more than patriarchal pigment in a tube. It is a tool for revolution.

Most people assume that makeup is only for clowns and cisgender women, and anyone else who uses it is simply a deviant who has “stolen” it.

This probably won’t come as a shock to most of you, but yes-- Christianity also temporarily ruined makeup. Once upon a time, it was quite normal for men to wear makeup. Then the Jesus toe-suckers made up a whole bunch of arbitrary rules about what we currently observe masculinity and femininity to be, and here we are in this stinky pile of crap rules.

Who wears makeup and how people wear makeup has shifted so much throughout history, and the struggles we experience around this today have only been relevant for a hundred years or so. One of the most common forms of rebellion we hear of is when women reject traditional femininity. Whether “burning our bras”, shaving our heads, or growing out our armpit hair, this is not an uncommon experience for a lot of women. The scandal!! The pet has escaped her cage!! So many women I know have experienced an anti-femininity phase at least once in their lives. Sometimes this “phase” transitions into a permanent rejection of gender norms, but it really varies from person to person. Often it’s set off by an overwhelming awareness of how much women are defined by superficial characteristics, traditionally determined and enforced by men. So we attempt to take ourselves out of the system by wearing neutral and aggressive clothing, switching up which parts of our bodies are hairy and which aren’t, and avoiding anything “girlie”. Revisiting my conversation with Aepril, my high-glam friend who inspired this blog and was mentioned in Part 1, she made a good point about honoring such an experience: “I went through a miserable phase in my feminist youth where I thought I was being uber feminist by not shaving or wearing makeup or wearing heels, etc, because to do so was giving into the patriarchy. I was miserable of course. It took my drag queen friends to wake me up to that, as I realized that they were willing to give up family, social status...their safety and even their lives for the privilege of expressing themselves in a glamorous, feminine way. While I had that privilege because I was born in a female body. I might be criticised by both men and women, but I wouldn’t be beaten in the street for transgressing gender roles. I realized how much it meant to me through seeing how much it meant to them. Why should I give that up either? Why should anyone have to?” In Aepril’s situation, she found that her place of authenticity was through femininity. In a world that is so divided between the shoulds and should-nots of who we’re supposed to be, I find it important to squeeze ourselves through and experience all sides so we can settle on what’s true for us. Then it’s no longer conformity; it’s an outlet.

In the 20th and 21st centuries, the use of makeup norms has been subverted to amplify voices that demand human rights and fair treatment. Its application has been largely linked to LGBTQ+ visibility and gay rights movements. The anti-Vietnam movement in the late 60s and 70s utilized makeup to display over-feminization and homosexuality as a way to avoid being drafted. The glam rock movement gave us icons like David Bowie, exposing and exploding restrictive gender norms through outrageous clothing and makeup, utilizing pop culture to spread ideas and acceptance of androgyny. “Female impersonation” has origins dating back to the 19th century in Europe, and the art of Drag Queens & Kings is alive and well today, celebrating, mocking, questioning, and expanding gender in clubs and theaters, in film, and right in our homes through TV favorites like Ru Paul’s Drag Race.

For our trans-sisters, the decision to wear makeup could have life or death consequences. As a transwoman friend of mine disclosed a few months back, when she’s walking down the street and hears a man call after her, her immediate thoughts turn to, “will I experience violence because I’m a woman? Or will I experience violence because he thinks I’m a faggot?” There is a lot of discussion in the trans community about the privilege of “passing”, and I believe these conversations have further supported the struggles womxn generally face-- does wearing makeup make you more or less of a woman? As writer Lux Alptraum points out, “the idea that external appearance is what makes someone a “real” woman is the very thing that many trans women have committed themselves to fighting. Makeup is incredibly powerful. It can be used for protest, and it can be used for comfort. It’s daily wear, and it’s political. It’s an expression of freedom, and a bold face confronting restriction. It’s transformative, giving people the opportunity to live in the bodies and images that feel right and true for them. Makeup is art, an embracing of life and physicality, a way to show up, be counted, and be present. It’s an act of defiance, and an act of love.

I recently read that Facebook now has 56 gender identities one can choose from. Facebook blows, but wow that’s actually really awesome! Within that list, some of the more frequently used terms include:

RETHINK (INGREDIENTS)

The fine print on beauty labels tells us next to nothing about how responsibly sourced ingredients are. To muddy matters, calculating a product’s eco-footprint is far trickier than checking if the formula is all-natural or organic.

For starters, natural ingredients can still cause environmental havoc—take, for instance, palm oil and its derivatives. Widely used in beauty products, they can be found in everything from shampoo to lipstick. They are largely produced in Indonesia and Malaysia, and the destruction of rainforests to clear the way for palm oil plantations is rampant. “A lot of companies are coming in and bulldozing and forcing communities out,” says Lindsay Dahl, senior vice-president of social mission at Beautycounter. Although the brand initially wanted to eschew palm oil, it realized that palm derivatives are still the best choice for many of its products.

As cosmetics ingredients, palm oil derivatives are safe and non-toxic, explains Dahl. Plus, palm oil is the most efficient vegetable oil to grow, so switching to less efficient crops that demand more land could be more environmentally damaging. Beauty companies are therefore working to change how it’s produced: 100 per cent of L’Oréal Paris’s palm oil supply is certified by the non-profit authority Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), and Beautycounter is currently pushing for all of its products to be RSPO-certified, too.

But sometimes there’s no way to harvest something in a sustainable way, so rethinking ingredients means taking to the science lab. A 2012 study by the ocean conservation non-profit BLOOM found that the cosmetics industry was the world’s biggest buyer of animal squalane, a moisturizer largely sourced from the livers of endangered sharks. So when Biossance got into the sustainable-skincare game, it opted to bioengineer 100 per cent plant-derived squalane—from renewable sugar cane—instead.

REVAMP (THROWAWAY PACKAGING)

Mixing non-recyclables with recyclables in the blue bin—something waste management experts have dubbed “wish-cycling”—can result in the whole batch getting trashed. Beauty products are extra-tricky: “If you look at a lipstick or a compact, it’s usually made from different kinds of material, and then there’s the size,” says Anthony Rossi, vice-president of global business development at Loop, a TerraCycle company. (Small-format items, generally anything less than eight centimetres by eight centimetres, often can’t be properly sorted.)

Plus, it’s not always obvious what can or can’t be recycled (a PET plastic shampoo bottle is OK but not the cap) and too often leftover goop hasn’t been rinsed off. “When something is contaminated with residual liquid, not only can you not recycle it but it ruins other recyclables,” says Calvin Lakhan, PhD, co-investigator for York University’s Waste Wiki project. A study done for Environment and Climate Change Canada reports that in Canada, we throw away 87 per cent of plastics.

But even if we only recycle what we should, the system is plagued by another problem: plummeting demand. “The big challenge with recycling today is that the cost of crude oil to make virgin plastics is so cheap,” says Rossi. “The incentive for companies to use recycled plastics is diminishing by the day.”

There’s no fast fix to throwaway packaging, but beauty companies of all stripes are making headway. Recently, Unilever switched to 100 per cent recycled-plastic bottles for all three of Dove’s ranges in North America and Europe in an effort to slash its use of virgin plastics. Last year, Beautycounter got rid of 800,000 unnecessary plastic parts—think inner lids and spatulas otherwise doomed to become landfill fodder.

Over at Burt’s Bees, prioritizing post-consumer recycled (PCR) materials has been a longtime goal, with some items now up to 80 per cent PCR content. Through its TerraCycle partnership, the brand also ensures that people have a free way to recycle items that can’t go in a blue bin, like lip balms and mascara.

In the haute-beauty space, Hermès’s answer to disposable consumer culture includes the new Rouge Hermès lipsticks, encased in colour-blocked lacquered, brushed and polished metal. Designed by Pierre Hardy, best known for his shoes and baubles, the plastic-free tubes are refillable keepsake objets—like all luxury items, they’re made to last.

REINVENT (THE SYSTEM)

“Reduce, reuse, recycle—it’s not just a catchy phrase,” says Lakhan. “It’s actually the order we’re supposed to do things, but we as consumers and policy planners neglect those first two steps.” Why jettison perfectly functional packaging, for example, when it could be refilled? That’s the question being posed by a growing number of manufacturers and retailers. In Vancouver, The Body Shop’s newly revamped CF Pacific Centre store has refill stations where you can buy your favourite shower gel in replenishable aluminum bottles.

Local indie shops focused on refillables are popping up across Canada, too. Offering door-to-door service, Saponetti in Toronto will bring glass Mason jars with made-in-Canada soaps, shampoos and conditioners right to you and take away your empties for reuse.

Similarly, TerraCycle’s circular shopping platform, Loop, is a spin on the milkman delivery model, partnering with some major players in beauty, including P&G and Unilever.
