Clarice Beckett (Australian painter) 1887 - 1935
Bowl of Calendula, s.d.
oil on composition board
Clarice Majoribanks Beckett was an Australian Tonalist painter whose works are featured in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria and the Art Gallery of South Australia.
Beckett was born in Casterton, Victoria, the daughter of Joseph Clifden Beckett (ca. 1852-1936), a bank manager, and his wife Elizabeth Kate, née Brown (ca. 1855-1934). Her grandfather was John Brown, a Scottish master builder who had designed and built Como House and its gardens in South Yarra, Victoria.
Clarice was a boarder at Queen's College, Ballarat until 1903, before spending a year at Melbourne Church of England Girls' Grammar School. She showed artistic ability, and after leaving school took private lessons in charcoal drawing at Ballarat. In 1914 she went to Melbourne's National Gallery School, completing three years of study under Frederick McCubbin before continuing her studies under Max Meldrum, whose controversial theories became a pivotal factor in her own art practice.
In 1919 her parents moved from Bendigo to the Melbourne bayside suburb of Beaumaris and, with their health failing, Beckett assumed household responsibilities that virtually dictated the structure of the rest of her life, severely limiting her artistic endeavour. Beckett could only go out during the dawn and dusk to paint as most of her day was spent caring for them.
Beckett is recognised as one of Australia's most important modernist artists. Despite a talent for portraiture and a keen public appreciation for her still lifes, Beckett preferred the solo, outdoor process of painting landscapes. She relentlessly painted sea and beachscapes, rural and suburban scenes, often enveloped in the atmospheric effects of early mornings or evening. Her subjects were often drawn from the Beaumaris area, where she lived for the latter part of her life. She was one of the first of her group to use a painting trolley, or mobile easel to make it easier to paint outdoors in different locations.
Max Meldrum once stated, "There would never be a great woman artist and there never had been. Woman had not the capacity to be alone". It is believed this reflects the overall opinion of the period; Beckett was continually put down by the critics and sold little in her lifetime.
While painting the wild sea off Beaumaris during a big storm in 1935, Beckett developed pneumonia and died four days later in a hospital at Sandringham. She was buried in the Cheltenham Memorial Park (Wangara Road) not far from another noted female artist, Mary Vale. She was only 48 when she died, the year after her mother's death.

Trusted Experts for Soil Testing and Site Classification in Bass Coast & Melbourne
Understanding the condition of the soil is crucial for any construction or development project. Whether you’re building a new home, planning a commercial structure, or working on infrastructure, soil testing and site classification provide the foundation for safe and sustainable construction. At The 4 Spheres, we specialise in offering reliable and accurate Soil Testing in Bass Coast and Site Classifications in Melbourne to support builders, developers, and homeowners.
Tumblr media
Why Soil Testing Matters
Soil testing is a vital part of pre-construction planning. It determines the physical and chemical composition of the soil, ensuring that the land is suitable for building. Without this step, developers may face future problems like foundation failure, structural cracks, or drainage issues. Here's why soil testing should never be overlooked:
Assesses Soil Bearing Capacity: Determines how much load the soil can bear.
Identifies Soil Reactivity: Helps to know if the soil expands, shrinks, or shifts with moisture.
Improves Safety: Prevents structural issues by ensuring the soil is stable.
Ensures Compliance: Fulfils local council and regulatory requirements.
At The 4 Spheres, we perform comprehensive soil assessments in accordance with Australian standards, delivering timely and detailed reports.
Soil Testing in Bass Coast – Precision Meets Professionalism
Bass Coast is a unique region with diverse soil profiles. Whether you're developing in Wonthaggi, Inverloch, or Cowes, understanding your land's characteristics is critical. Our Soil Testing in Bass Coast includes:
Borehole Sampling
Moisture Content Analysis
Soil Reactivity Testing (AS 2870)
Percolation Tests for Septic Systems
We use advanced field equipment and laboratory methods to assess soil strength, composition, and moisture behaviour. Our geotechnical experts tailor each test based on your property’s location and your project’s scope.
Benefits of Our Soil Testing Services:
Fast turnaround time
On-site and laboratory-based testing
Fully certified and insured experts
Reports suitable for building permits and council submissions
Site Classifications in Melbourne – Know Before You Build
Site classification is the process of categorising a construction site based on the soil’s movement potential, particularly in relation to clay content and moisture. In Melbourne, where clay-rich soils are common, understanding site class is essential for correct foundation design.
Tumblr media
At The 4 Spheres, we provide Site Classifications in Melbourne that align with the AS 2870 standard, classifying your site as:
Class A – Stable, mostly sand or rock
Class S – Slightly reactive clay
Class M – Moderately reactive clay
Class H – Highly reactive clay (H1/H2)
Class E – Extremely reactive clay
Class P – Problematic site, may include uncontrolled fill or landslip risk
Our detailed classification reports help engineers and architects choose the right type of foundation system, ensuring long-term structural integrity.

Simplifying Waste Management with Industrial Waste Bins
Tumblr media
Most industries generate substantial amounts of waste and the type of waste varies as per the industry hence industrial waste bins are very important for safe disposal and recycling of wastes. Construction, hospitality, retail, manufacturers and distributors, traders and builders, etc all generate waste. The waste bins can be used to dispose of many different types of waste like metals, bricks, concrete, plastics, timber, rocks, plaster, etc most of these wastes are recycled.
The companies offering to skip bin hire in Melbourne try to recycle as much waste as possible so that the impact on the environment is minimal. However, there are some items that are not accepted by the companies offering skip bins for hire. Some of the items that cannot be thrown away in skip bins are asbestos, hazardous waste, fibro-cement sheeting, chemicals, fire extinguishers, glass bottles, etc. Most businesses nowadays want to focus on sustainability as even customers and clients are attracted to such companies that focus on sustainability.
Understanding Council Permits and the Size of Skip Bins
One can choose to hire skip bins based on the amount of waste generated and also if there is a requirement the companies offering skip bin rentals also offer hook bins. Skip bin of size 9m3 has a length of 4.5m, a width of 1.6m, and a height of 1.5m. When it comes to the size of hook bins, one with 10m3 size has a length of 5.4m and a width of 2.2m along with a height of 1.2m.
One can place these bins as per their requirements while it is private property but when it comes to public property one requires permissions since it is council land. One must get help from professional companies offering skip bin hire services to complete the paperwork beforehand so that there are no issues when it comes to placing the bin. Along with the paperwork placing the skip bin on public property does result in some additional costs that depend on the council area.
Get in touch with the company offering skip bin rentals either through call or mail and get a quotation for hiring bins to appropriately dispose of the waste produced on the premises.

Why Hiring Industrial Cleaners in Melbourne Is Essential for Your Industrial Premises?
Due to the high volume of customers or people working inside, commercial spaces and industrial buildings need to be kept spotless at all times to guarantee that people are happy with sanitation. Industrial cleaners in Melbourne offer knowledgeable staff members who can effectively clean large areas and leave them looking spotless. Professional teams can efficiently do general cleaning, mopping, vacuuming, window cleaning, toilet cleaning, wiping, dusting, sink cleaning, sanitisation, and other jobs.
Tumblr media
In Melbourne, cleaning workplace and school windows is crucial, as is cleaning reception areas, private offices, desks and other workstations, and key entrances. School cleaning experts use top-notch tools along with expert personnel, and some other spaces that require cleaning include lobbies, conference rooms, staff lunchrooms, kitchens, bathrooms, etc.
Why Do Offices and Commercial Spaces Need Well-Maintained Gardens?
Commercial garden care services are required for areas that have plants and vegetation. For a more appealing appearance that attracts customers, a garden's trees, bushes, and other elements need to be kept current. While gardening adds aesthetic appeal and makes spaces inviting, fertilising soil promotes plant health and guarantees luxuriant development. Hedging and trimming give plants a polished look, while routine garden clean-ups maintain the garden neat. In addition, weeding is required to stop undesired development, and lawn mowing keeps the grass consistently tidy.
Other Services Offered by Companies That Offer Cleaning Services
Builders: These experts can design the most visually beautiful and functional place for a customer, whether they are building a home or a company. By taking into account their clients' opinions and attempting to integrate their recommendations into the construction of the house, builders provide a great deal of peace of mind.

Why is Reverse Living Gaining Popularity for Modern Homes?
Tumblr media
Reverse living has become a popular architectural trend in recent years, appealing to homeowners looking for creative design ideas. By putting living areas on upper floors and saving bedrooms for the first floor, this method reverses conventional living patterns. Its popularity is growing as a result of congested urban areas and the growing need for distinctive home designs. More contemporary homes are adopting reverse living for the following reasons.
Better Views & More Natural Light
The chance to enjoy stunning views is among the main benefits of reverse living. Homeowners can optimise their sightlines by placing living areas on upper floors, ensuring attractive views of their surroundings. The entire ambiance of the house is greatly improved by this elevation, which also allows more natural light to enter the living areas, making them lighter and cosier.
2. Improved Space Utilisation
Reverse living makes the most of the space that is available, particularly in places with limited land. Families can benefit from outdoor living spaces like decks and balconies by placing the living room on the top floor. In addition to offering more useful outside areas, this configuration seamlessly blends indoor and outdoor living, making it ideal for hosting visitors or spending quality time with family.
3. Reduced Noise and More Privacy
Additionally, having bedrooms on the ground floor provides seclusion by separating private areas from the activities taking place in the general areas. By reducing noise disturbance, this design from a passive house builder in Melbourne can create a tranquil haven for rest and relaxation.
4. Climate Adaptability
Finally, homes with reverse living tend to be more climate resilient. Elevated living areas can lessen their susceptibility to floods, which makes them better suited for regions where such natural disasters are common. This feature improves comfort in all seasons when paired with better ventilation and air circulation.
Thus, reverse living is a cutting-edge architectural movement that promotes contemporary lifestyles by highlighting the value of vistas, effective use of available space, privacy, and climatic flexibility.

Builders Cleaning Hoppers Crossing
Builders cleaning Hoppers crossing is a service that helps make your home or business presentable after renovations. The cleaners use high quality equipment and products to clean your home or office.
The suburb is served by the Hoppers Crossing railway station. It is located south of the suburb, on the Werribee line. The station is named after a local railway crossing. The station has several amenities.
1. Softening
A person can soften his stance on a certain issue by taking a different approach. For example, he can change his tone of voice and use less harsh language when speaking about the issue. He can also soften his position by changing how he presents it to others.
Hoppers Crossing is a suburb of Melbourne, Australia, located south-west of the Melbourne central business district and within the Wyndham City local government area. The suburb lies on the urban fringe and extends north to the suburbs of Tarneit and Truganina. It is serviced by a railway station on the Werribee line, which opened in 1970.
The local shopping centre is the Werribee Plaza, which contains a Target store and other shops. The suburb has several gyms and sports grounds with facilities for tennis, soccer, Australian rules football, basketball, and netball.
2. Buffering
Buffering is a protective agent that separates two services that are rubbing up against each other. For example, buffering protects the floor from being scratched by furniture legs as it is moved around.
The suburb is served by the Hoppers Crossing railway station, on the Werribee line, at Old Geelong Road level crossing. The station was formerly known as Hopper’s Hill, an expression that referred to the steep gradient from Skeleton Creek which goods locomotive drivers had to climb.
Bus services link the suburb with Hoppers Crossing station, Werribee Plaza and the surrounding townships of Woodville Park, Tarneit, Truganina, and Williams Landing. Recreational spaces are found along drainage reserves and beside the Skeleton Creek. There are three local State primary schools and a secondary college.
3. Emulsifying
Emulsifiers are one of the most commonly-used additives in industrial foods, owing to their thickening properties. They also play unique roles in certain types of foods, such as preventing large ice crystals from forming in ice cream or allowing chocolate to stay smooth and velvety.3 Added lecithin is responsible for the former function, and guar gum and carrageenan do the latter.
Hoppers Crossing is a suburb on the urban fringe of Melbourne, extending northwards from the Princes Highway to the growing suburbs of Tarneit and Truganina. The suburb has three State primary schools, a secondary college and a P-12 school. Private education is provided by Heathhill Christian College and two Catholic primary schools.
It is home to the Hoppers Crossing Football Club, nicknamed the Warriors, which competes in the Western Region Football League first division. The club plays at Hogans Road Reserve and has senior, junior and reserve sides.
4. Sequestration
The indiscriminate budget cuts known as sequestration are expected to continue to have a major impact on the nation's economy and on federal programs. These cuts were triggered as part of the Budget Control Act (BCA) when the congressional super committee failed to agree on deficit reduction targets.
The approach to Hoppers Crossing from the Princes Highway has warehouses and factory buildings, while the approach from Old Geelong Road has big-box retail outlets. Local buses connect the suburb to the Hoppers Crossing station, Werribee Plaza and Werribee.
If Congress lets sequestration continue, it will mean even deeper cuts to the education, infrastructure and other vital services that we all depend on – in addition to more pay cuts and furloughs for federal workers. If you want to change this, we need you to take action now.
5. Precipitation
Precipitation is water falling from the atmosphere to Earth. It comes in many forms, including rain, snow, hail, sleet and ice pellets. It is the driving force behind all hydrologic processes, such as infiltration, surface runoff and baseflow.
Most precipitation begins as tiny droplets of water in clouds. These droplets form around microscopic cloud condensation nuclei, such as dust or pollution particles.
Then the droplets collide, and they may grow larger until they are heavy enough to fall to the ground. Sometimes different types of precipitation occur at the same time, such as sleet and rain or snow and rain. Precipitation also affects the chemistry of soil water and stream water, removing some chemicals. It adds others, such as dissolved carbon dioxide, and changes the chemistry of some nutrients.

Swimming Pools in Melbourne
For many Australians, the image of a backyard swimming pool conjures up visions of sun-drenched summers, family gatherings, and refreshing dips on hot days. In Melbourne, where summers can be intense, having a swimming pool is often considered a desirable addition to any home. But with so many options available, navigating the world of swimming pools in Melbourne has to offer can feel overwhelming. This guide aims to provide a clear overview of the key considerations for anyone looking to buy swimming pools in the city.
Tumblr media
Understanding the Types of Swimming Pools
Before diving into specific retailers or installers, it's essential to understand the different types of swimming pools available. This will help you narrow down your options based on your budget, space constraints, and desired aesthetic. The most common types include:
In Ground Pools Melbourne: These are the classic, permanent pool option, constructed directly into the ground. They offer the most customization in terms of shape, size, and materials.
Above-Ground Pools: A more affordable and often temporary option, these pools are installed on the surface of the ground. They are generally easier and faster to install than In Ground Pools Melbourne.
Fibreglass Pools: These pools are manufactured off-site as a single unit and then installed into the ground. They offer a smooth, non-porous surface and are relatively quick to install.
Concrete Pools: These pools are built on-site using concrete and reinforced steel. They offer the greatest flexibility in design but are typically the most expensive and time-consuming to construct.
Considerations When Planning to Buy Swimming Pools
Several factors should be considered before deciding to buy swimming pools in Melbourne:
Budget: Establishing a realistic budget is crucial. The cost of a swimming pool can vary significantly depending on the type, size, materials, and installation complexity.
Space: Assess the available space in your backyard. Consider setbacks, easements, and other regulations that may restrict the size and placement of your pool.
Council Regulations: Research local council regulations regarding pool fencing, safety requirements, and planning permits.
Maintenance: Factor in the ongoing maintenance costs, including chemicals, cleaning, and equipment upkeep.
Lifestyle: Consider how you plan to use the pool. Is it primarily for relaxation, exercise, or entertaining? This will influence the size and features you choose.
Navigating the Swimming Pools Melbourne Market
Melbourne offers a wide array of pool builders, retailers, and installers. When exploring your options, consider these points:
Reputation and Experience: Look for established companies with a proven track record. Check online reviews and ask for references.
Licensing and Insurance: Ensure the company is properly licensed and insured to carry out the work.
Quotes and Contracts: Obtain detailed written quotes from multiple companies and carefully review the terms and conditions of any contracts.
Warranty and After-Sales Service: Inquire about warranties on the pool structure, equipment, and installation.
The Appeal of In Ground Pools Melbourne
For many homeowners, In Ground Pools Melbourne represent the ultimate backyard upgrade. They offer a permanent and aesthetically pleasing addition to the property, enhancing its value and providing a private oasis for relaxation and recreation. While they require a larger investment than other pool types, they offer greater customization and a more luxurious swimming experience.

The Rise of Recycled Bricks in Melbourne: Sustainable Building Solutions for the Future
In recent years, sustainability has become a key focus in construction and architecture. As the demand for eco-friendly materials rises, recycled bricks have emerged as a popular solution, especially in Melbourne. Not only do recycled bricks contribute to reducing waste, but they also offer a range of practical benefits such as durability, aesthetic appeal, and cost-effectiveness. This article explores the growing trend of using recycled bricks in Melbourne, highlighting their environmental impact, advantages, and the best sources for obtaining them.
Recycled Bricks Melbourne
1. What Are Recycled Bricks? Recycled bricks are salvaged from old buildings, demolished structures, or leftover stock that has been cleaned, processed, and reused for new construction projects. Unlike new bricks, recycled ones have a unique character, often showing signs of wear, texture, and color variations that give them an authentic, timeless look. In Melbourne, many construction companies and DIY enthusiasts are turning to these bricks for their sustainable qualities and distinct aesthetic.
2. Benefits of Using Recycled Bricks in Melbourne
Environmental Impact: The most obvious advantage of recycled bricks is their contribution to sustainability. By reusing bricks that would otherwise end up in landfills, builders can significantly reduce construction waste and the environmental footprint of their projects.
Durability and Strength: Recycled bricks are known for their longevity and resilience. These bricks have already undergone the test of time and extreme weather conditions, making them even more reliable for future use.
Aesthetic Appeal: Recycled bricks have a distinctive, vintage look that can add character to any building or renovation project. They can give structures a rustic, earthy charm, especially in heritage and modern designs.
Cost-Effective: Recycled bricks are often cheaper than brand-new ones, making them an affordable option for construction projects. This can be particularly beneficial for those working on a budget, such as homeowners or small businesses.
3. Where to Find Recycled Bricks in Melbourne There are several places in Melbourne where you can source high-quality recycled bricks, including:
Reclaimed Building Material Suppliers: Several businesses in Melbourne specialize in reclaimed materials, including recycled bricks. These suppliers offer a range of options, from standard brick types to more unique, hard-to-find bricks.
Demolition and Salvage Yards: Another option is visiting demolition yards where old buildings are being dismantled. Many of these yards sell bricks and other construction materials from demolished properties.
Online Marketplaces: Websites such as Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace often list recycled bricks for sale by private sellers or businesses, providing an easy way to find affordable bricks for your project.
Local Brickworks and Manufacturers: Some brick manufacturers in Melbourne may also offer recycled bricks or custom-made bricks from recycled materials.
4. How to Incorporate Recycled Bricks in Your Project
Exterior Walls: Recycled bricks are perfect for creating feature walls or cladding in both residential and commercial properties. They can provide a rustic or industrial look, depending on the project.
Landscaping: These bricks can be used in outdoor spaces, such as for garden paths, retaining walls, or fire pits, adding a natural and eco-friendly element to the landscape.
Heritage Restorations: For projects aiming to preserve the heritage and character of old buildings, recycled bricks provide an authentic solution that blends with the original materials while reducing the need for new resources.
5. Considerations When Using Recycled Bricks While recycled bricks offer numerous benefits, there are a few things to keep in mind:
Quality Control: It's important to inspect recycled bricks for any structural damage, cracks, or weaknesses before use. Quality control checks are crucial to ensure the bricks will perform well in construction.
Matching and Color Variations: Recycled bricks come in a wide variety of colors and textures, so it’s important to choose bricks that will match your aesthetic requirements.
Availability: The availability of recycled bricks can vary, and you may need to visit several suppliers or yards to find the right quantity and style for your project.
6. The Future of Recycled Bricks in Melbourne As Melbourne continues to prioritize sustainability and green building practices, the demand for recycled bricks is expected to grow. Builders, architects, and homeowners alike are increasingly recognizing the value of using recycled materials to reduce waste and conserve natural resources. In addition, advancements in recycling technology may lead to even more efficient methods of brick reuse, making recycled bricks an even more attractive option for the future.
Recycled Bricks Melbourne
Conclusion Recycled bricks are playing a significant role in Melbourne’s shift toward sustainable construction practices. Not only do they offer environmental and economic benefits, but they also bring a unique, historical charm to modern projects. Whether you’re building a new home, renovating an old one, or simply looking for eco-friendly options for your landscaping, recycled bricks provide a versatile and responsible choice for Melbourne's growing building market.
