Day tripping to check out campsites

Yesterday we took advantage of the beautiful fall weather by taking a road trip to the Delaware Water Gap to check out some not yet visited campsites.  We also checked out an oldie but goodie.  This is the day, in review...

1st Stop: Camp Kittatinny (Milford, PA)

Pros: You can’t help but notice the stately Main Office/General Store upon entering the main entrance of the campground.  We didn’t get a chance to look around, but it was clean and seemed to hold an adequate inventory of camp necessities.  The campsites are located in two areas – one of which is walking distance from the Main office in a section they call “The Beach,” but it’s really just the Delaware River.  Stacked along The Beach are several kayaks and canoes (for water activities), and I imagine waking up and having the river as the first thing you see, is very peaceful.  The second area of campsites is accessed via a separate entrance about a quarter-mile from the main.  The tall, canvassing trees offered significant shade, and there was a short walking trail that led to a bridge that connected back to the Main Beach area.   Each site included a table and a freestanding standard fire ring that could be positioned anywhere.  Finally, the bathhouse, although a tad outdated, was spacious, clean, and had several bathroom stalls and 3 showers. 

Cons:  The staff at the General Store wasn’t exactly rude, but they weren’t exactly the warmest welcome committee we’ve come across while camping.  The campsite is small, so we were able to quickly surveil The Beach before hopping back in the car and driving to the secondary entrance.  The first thing I noticed was how open the sites were.  It was difficult to discern where some sites started and ended, but it was easy to see that there would be little to no privacy from campers pitching on either side of you.  And if that wasn’t enough of noise control concerns, the proximity of these sites to the main road made it so you could clearly hear the passing traffic.  Earplugs anyone?

2nd Stop: Dingman’s Ferry Campground (Dingman’s Ferry, PA)

Since we were in the area, I drove by our favorite campsite to give my traveling partner an idea of what I thought made for a great campground. 

Pros: This is our go-to site and for many reasons.  The staff is friendly, the campgrounds and sites are a nice size, the bathhouses are nice and have been updated in the last 5 years, there’s access to the Delaware River, and our number one reason is that it is a “disconnected” location – meaning you have no access to phone or wifi service. 

Cons:  There’s not really much to be unhappy with at Dingman’s, but if we had to name one thing, it would be that their camping season ends in early October.     

3rd Stop: Stokes State Forest – Lake Ocquittunk Camping Area

Pros:  There’s so much goodness to this location that it could easily be a contender to our fave.  Nestled deep within Stokes State Forest, it is vast and offers a combination of lakeside cabins and tent camping sites that center around, or very close to, the lake.   This set-up means there’s plenty of opportunity for fishing and that hiking trails are built into the landscape of the campgrounds.   Each heavily canvassed campsite features a table,  a grated firepit, a pretty nice amount of privacy, and enough space to accommodate larger groups.  There’s very little noise disturbance from vehicles which allows the sounds of nature to prevail.  Depending on your phone carrier, you may get a signal, but you won’t have wifi access, making it easier to disconnect. 

Cons:  The Main Office is currently closed due to COVID, so there’s a good chance we’ll have to visit a nearby convenience store to refill our ice supply.  There only seems to be one bath house located in the tent camping area. 

4th Stop: Lake Harmony Campground (Branchville, NJ)

Pros: …

Cons:  The Confederate flag hanging outside of an RV says just about all that needs to be said here.  We couldn’t get off this campsite fast enough.

 5th (and final) Stop: Campgaw Mountain Campground

Pros:  It’s a quaint and secluded campground area located behind the Campgaw ski area.  Several cute lean-to-esque structures are perched on some sites, and there appeared to be hiking trails located throughout the site.  It’s open year-round (weather permitting) so if you want to include a day of skiing or snow tubing into your camping weekend, it’s within walking distance to do so.    

Cons: Although the campsite is literally down the road from the Ski area, it wasn’t clearly marked, and there isn’t a General’s Store or Camp Office onsite.  If we weren’t super explorers, we probably wouldn’t have found it.  The bathhouse is currently closed due to COVID, but they have several port-a-potties located on the premises.  I also didn’t see a store onsite from which you could buy wood or ice.

Union County, NJ – July 26, 2022 — Union County residents can help fight back against the spotted lanternfly by destroying the destructive pest while it is still in the early stages of growth. The spotted lanternfly is an invasive species that can weaken trees, damage ornamental plants and destroy fruit trees, hops, grape vines and other crops. They also excrete a whitish “honeydew” that can grow moldy and foul outdoor spaces including patios and yard furniture. Each fall the adult spotted lanternfly lays eggs on outdoor surfaces including tree trunks, lawn furniture and vehicles. In early summer, the eggs hatch into nymphs that look like small black or bright red beetles speckled with white spots. Residents who spot the nymphs can use a variety of approved pesticides to kill them. Crushing or swatting them is another option, though they are quick to hop away. “Union County residents and property managers can take action against this destructive pest now, by inspecting yards, gardens and landscaping for the nymphs, and destroying them before they mature,” said Commissioner Chair Rebecca Williams. The nymphs can be seen on many different kinds of plants and trees. They are especially likely to be found clustering on the stems of the common ailanthus tree, or “tree of heaven.” The nymphs mature into large, moth-like adults that can be easily identified by their papery white wings and brightly colored red, black and white underwings and body. Let’s look at some problematic tree issues and see which trees to avoid to keep problems out of your yard.

Messy Trees:

If you purchase a fruit tree, or a tree with seed pods, they will be messy. Ask yourself if you want to clean up their mess all year.

The answer could be yes if you truly love the tree species. But some trees are definitely hard to love.

The Sweetgum Tree:

Many people think the sweetgum tree is quite beautiful, especially in the fall. It’s found in many parts of the US, including the Northeast. However, the sweetgum tree is exceptionally messy.

The tree’s annoying seed pods are round, hard, and spikey, making them difficult to clean up. But you will need to clean up after this tree if you don’t want to be stepping on and tripping over these pods all fall and winter.

Tree’s With Water Seeking and Otherwise Destructive Roots:

Some tree roots will naturally seek out water to keep the tree healthy. But if you have a septic system or sewer lines, this tree activity can cause a costly problem.

Also, some tree root systems are so strong, they can damage your home’s foundation or property walkways.

The Weeping Willow:

The Weeping Willow is a beautiful tree commonly found in NJ gardens. However, this tree is thirsty. Its roots will seek water everywhere. If you have sewer pipes or a septic system nearby, your tree will eventually find them—and damage them.

The Weeping Willows roots are also strong and can damage sidewalks, patios, and other structures. There are things you can do to best deal with aggressive tree roots.

Trees That Invite Pests into Your Garden:

Some trees invite pests into your garden that otherwise wouldn’t think of visiting. This is also true for certain tree diseases.

The Lombardy Poplar:

The Lombardy Poplar thrives in most US growing zones. It’s fast growing and is popular for creating privacy hedges.

Unfortunately, this tree is also known to develop diseases and attract pests.

The tree is extremely susceptible to canker, a bacterial tree disease. This causes most of these trees to die within 10 to 15 years unless they’re treated and pruned routinely.

The tree is also susceptible to other diseases, including leaf spots, mildews, and honey fungus. If a tree gets honey fungus, remove and destroy it to keep infection from spreading to nearby trees.

And, the Lombardy Poplar attracts plant pests, including caterpillars, aphids, and willow beetles. Regular tree maintenance is required to prevent this.

This tree is also messy, with many dropping leaves and breaking twigs. Still, some homeowners love the privacy it quickly provides.

Weak Trees:

Some trees may cause you distress when they act stressed during a cold winter. If a tree has a reputation for being weak, it will need extra care in the fall and winter. You will need to protect it from the cold, snow, and ice.

The Silver Maple:

The Silver Maple is a fast-growing tree that can grow to heights of 50’ to 80’ at maturity. Many people enjoy its shade. However, this tree’s wood is weak and will break during storms or heavy winds.

Additionally, the tree has problems resisting decay and this can cause hazards on the ground from falling branches.

Its shallow root system seeks water and can disrupt your yard and plumbing.

Trees That Don’t Play Well with Others:

Some trees are highly invasive and will crowd out other tree species. This is a problem not only in yards-but when you want to maintain a good ecological balance.

Shade on a hot summer day can be a joy. Shade that makes it impossible to grow grass or other yard plants is downright annoying. If a tree overgrows and creates too much shade, your garden may end up looking unkept or become barren in spots.

Other trees can affect the soil and hurt growing conditions for other plants. For example, dropped pine tree needles can change the pH of soil, hurting other plants.

The Bradford Pear Tree:

The Bradford pear tree was first brought from China to the US in the 1960s. Initially, people adored the tree for its showy white blooms and rapid growth.

However, in recent years, the tree has fallen out of favor and is now known as one of the worst trees to plant in your yard.

The blossoms have an awful scent, and its weak branches easily break in winds or storms. This is a dangerous problem since the trees reach 30’ tall.

But their worst problem is that they are extremely invasive and eventually crowd out other plants. Many native species can’t get the light, water, or space they need, and eventually die.

In fact, The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has started phasing in a ban on selling the Bradford pear tree because of the environmental damage they cause.

Trees That Make You Sneeze:

If you are allergic to pollen, you should avoid certain trees. Many flowering trees create an excess of pollen in the spring and can keep you from enjoying your outdoor living space.

No one enjoys endless sneezing and watery eyes while relaxing outside.

The Red Oak:

The red oak is a beloved but messy tree. It’s known for its unique large leaves and acorns that will hurt if they fall on you. And the flowers of the red oak make a mess in the spring.

However, a bigger problem with the red oak is that it sheds many pollen-intense flowers in the spring. If you suffer from allergies, a nearby red oak can make your life miserable.

Ginkgo Biloba:

The female variety of Gingko Biloba has messy and truly horrid smelling fruits.

White Pine:

The white pine’s pitch falls on cars and clothing and is almost impossible to remove.
