#10 happened to someone I know who bought a used backpack and then a few months later tried to travel with it. TSA stopped them bc the drug sniffer dogs went apeshit. They got very thoroughly searched :| Do you know how hard it is to explain that it really honest to gods "isn't mine man!" to the TSA?
Least fun parts of thrift shopping:
This thrift shop used to have jeans for like $3 and now everything is priced like it's new
Hear about a cool new thrift shop in town and you check it out and it's actually "vintage upcycling and consignment" so the shredded jorts are $250 on sale
This place used to get cool stuff but the tiktok haul resale people found it and now anything decent is snapped up and immediately resold for like $500 online
"Ooh this is cute" and then you check and it's shein
"Ooh this is cute" and then you check and it's Harry P*tter
The jacket of your dreams is in your price range but it's 3 sizes too small
Your absolute FAVOURITE thrifted item finally wears out beyond salvation and when you do research to maybe find a replacement it's been discontinued since 1983
Check the pockets and find used kleenex
STICKY THING
This was exactly what I was looking for but I can't get the weed remnants out
"This is obviously broken but I know how to fix it" (never fixes it)

The "Nubbin bug" lives - A Star Trek prop resurrection with 3D Printing 🐛🖖🎥
Tumblr media
Star Trek: The Next Generation, Season 1, Episode 25 (May 1988), "Conspiracy", was one of my favorites. It featured a mind-controlling alien parasite referred to as the "Nubbin bug", or at least by The Greatest Generation Star Trek podcast.
Tumblr media
Back in 1998, there was not a lot of computer CGI, so it was a stop-motion prop. Years later, the co-hosts of The Greatest Generation, a fun Star Trek podcast, stumbled upon the original silicone molds used to create the Nubbin bug while a listener found in a warehouse clearance sale in Van Nuys, California.
Tumblr media
The podcasters acquired the mold. Shortly after, a listener from Atlanta who works at a prop studio offered to help preserve the prop since the original rubber material would decay over time. This led to the creation of archival-quality plaster casts to preserve the iconic alien for generations to come.
Tumblr media
And they did some more, using 3D scanners - the Nubbin bug was recreated as a 3D model, allowing for exact replicas to be printed. Over 100 of these replicas were made, each one hand-painted and assembled to match the original as closely as possible. Their handmade / 3D-printed versions look almost identical to the bugs that appeared in the episode.
Tumblr media
They also designed a Playschool-style retail packaging box to package the bugs. Fans of the podcast can purchase the limited-edition replicas. I don't know if they will post the 3D files, but I'll email and ask.
Tumblr media
This is a really cool project from one of the weirdest/best episodes, and I am thrilled that someone was able to preserve this piece of Sci-Fi history in such a cool way - the entire story is on this TikTok video.
No word where this cutie is though.

ID: A cropped screenshot from Ingram Spark showing various distribution regions. The highlighted ones are the US and the UK. The price shows 17.99 with a red exclamation mark next to it.
The next drop-down box prompts the author to set the wholesale discount to 55% trade, noting that this is the "retailer preference."
The author compensation, aka the amount the author will get paid for their work after wholesale discount and printing costs have been taken out of the $17.99 price tag, is shown as 0.61 cents in the US and 0.04 pence in the UK.
----
So this is a thing that I saw today when I logged into Ingram to confirm some metadata.
They used to list "retailer preference" at 40%, which is what they have made into their new wholesale distribution standard. You will not be able to distribute your books for global wholesale anymore after October 30th if you don't have your rates sent to 40%.
I don't doubt retailers would prefer if we sold to them at 55%. But considering myself and several others already have doubts over whether or not Ingram is actually showing our discounts to retailers (they've been caught showing mine as 5% even though they've been listed at 35% for three years), I'm just sort of sitting here, well, I can't accuse them of fraud, but let's just say I am not not thinking it.
Also, just a fun little tidbit, I tried to use my old ISBNs with d2d which legally I am allowed to do. They are mine. I own them. Anyway, d2d sent me a warning about how it would require me to work with them and Ingram Spark over several weeks to transfer the ISBN, and ahaha. Hahahahaha.
I'd say, "How do we think this is going to turn out?" But I think we all know.
We know.

Wtf is with my stupid ass manager's aversion to pricing?
We work in a RETAIL STORE that sells products for MONEY. If customers aren't able to find a price, they will not buy things. And/or they will take stuff halfway through the store and then decide it's not worth the effort to ask the cashier for a price check and leave the product(s) in some random wrong place.
And printing out price tags is just about the easiest thing to do. You go into the handheld, go to the "price tags" app, scan the product and the tag automatically prints from the mobile printer. And as a bonus, it's a sticker, so you just fucking stick it on the product. A baby could do it. It could not possibly be easier.
ALSO when we are shipped new products from the warehouse, inside the box is a page of sticker price tags that go with the products in said box. Just fucking tag as you stock. It could not possibly be easier.
But no, management separates the new stock from the tags and does who knows what with the tags (probably throw them away) and stock products with no prices.

We are having a rough 2023 and it's about to get rougher.
Our attempt to buy a home fell through, our attempt to move to a cheaper apartment fell through, my car needed over 1k$ in emergency repairs, stuff keeps breaking, and this month (july) our roommates are moving into their own house, which means my rent is doubled until my fiancée can find a job and/or we can get a roommate to replace them. I can make just barely enough to cover rent at my job, but it leaves very little room for food and utilities. I'm looking into subsistence programs.
Roommates were the owners of a lot of the furniture, kitchen gadgets, electronics, etc. We're getting a lot of furniture from relatives, garage sales, and buy nothing groups, but there's a handful of items that will be difficult to obtain or that are little things that add up.
Here's how you can help.
We have an Amazon wishlist, which is mostly kitchen things that we need, plus a few things that would be nice to have. We will be adding some things to the list as our roommates pack their stuff and we take inventory of our shared spaces.
I have written a lot of things. Here's a book about pretending to be a god in rural Appalachia for money, and its sequel about how many ways a wedding can go awry. Or are you nostalgic for pre-covid problems? The Glue Famine chronicles my journey through a retail trend that baffled everyone involved. Buying a book encourages authors to write more books and that is a threat!
I have two excellent cartomancy decks. The Sweeney Tarot is 10 years old and it's still a fan favorite. I just released a 10 year anniversary edition with better quality print and a nicer box.
There is also my new, experimental oracle: The Motif Deck. You can read more about this deck and what sets it apart from other decks here.
Here is my etsy, which is where you can get some cool iron on patches.
Here is my redbubble where you can get some cool stickers and other stuff, especially if you like moths or weird animals. Lots of queer things there, too! Redbubble stickers are strong enough to hold up as bumper stickers- I have noticed, if that sweetens the deal.
Here's where you can order prints of my erasure art paintings.
Also if you like some of my photos from @photo-critter some of the nature and animal ones are available for prints as well.
And if you just want to help out without getting anything in return, there is always sending a donation via Kofi.
There is absolutely no obligation to contribute, but if you've enjoyed my stories or seen something you like and needed an excuse to buy it, or if you just want to help, really we appreciate anything that comes our way.
Thank you, once again, to everyone that has offered to help. Even if its just the tiniest bit of a commission from a sticker- it helps.

Custom Boxes Work in Favor of Your Products
Tumblr media
Are you looking for an efficient way to box and store your products? Look no further than these boxes! Custom Boxes are designed to keep your products secure and organized. They come in various sizes and styles, making them an excellent option for any business. One of the significant advantages of using these boxes for your products is that they can be customized. They allow you to ensure that your products will ship in a way that reflects your company's brand. You can customize the boxes with your logo, colors, and text. They will help ensure that your product stands out and leaves a lasting impression on your customers.
Advanced Custom Boxes Help with Branding
Using boxes for your products is a great way to help with branding. Branding creates a unique look and feel for your company, product, or service. Custom Boxes can be printed with logos, patterns, or other images that can help create that look and feel. You can also use them as a part of larger boxes, such as a gift box that further enhances the branding efforts. They can also advertise special offers or promotions, which will help spread the word about your business. In short, boxes can be an essential part of your branding strategy. They’re visually appealing and memorable, making it easier for customers to recognize you when browsing in-store or online.
Usage of Custom Packaging for Safe Shipping
Shipping products can be daunting, but using boxes can make it much more straightforward. With Custom Packaging, you can easily store and transport your items without worrying about them getting damaged. You can also mark the boxes with information such as the item’s destination and other essential details. Furthermore, boxes are an excellent way to save on shipping costs by allowing you to ship multiple items simultaneously. Additionally, they can ensure that fragile items arrive safely at their destination. Therefore, using boxes for shipping is essential for any business that needs to transport goods.
Reclaimed Retail Boxes after Proper Usage
One of the best things about these boxes is that they can be reused. They mean you can use them to send out multiple orders instead of buying new boxes for each order. On the other hand, by reusing your Retail Boxes, you can also save on shipping costs since you don’t have to pay for the additional weight of a new box. Furthermore, reusing boxes helps reduce waste and can be a great way to show customers that you’re committed to sustainability. Reusing these boxes is a great way to get the most out of your boxes and save on costs in the long run.
Soap Boxes Will Hold Heavy Items
Boxes designed for your products are an excellent way to ensure your items will be safely transported. Soap Boxes can be made with various materials, allowing you to choose the strength and durability best suited for your product. Whether you need something light-duty or heavy-duty, these boxes can easily carry whatever weight you need. Not only do they protect your product from damage, but they also make it easier to move large items. Many of these boxes are designed with a reinforced bottom to support the weight of even the heaviest items. If you need to transport heavy items, you can trust that these boxes will keep them secure and safe during transport.
Soap Packaging Can Protect Your Products
Boxes are essential for shipping and storage but can also protect your products. The correct boxes will provide a secure environment that prevents your items from getting damaged in transit. Soap Packaging can also provide extra cushioning to help absorb shock and vibration. They also offer a layer of insulation to help keep your items cool or warm as necessary. You can use bubble wrap, packing peanuts, and other materials to protect your items. By using boxes for marketing, you can reach more customers and create a better brand presence.
Boxes for Soaps Can Be a Marketing Tool
Using boxes as a marketing tool can be an effective way to build a brand. Boxes for Soaps can print with logos, slogans, and product images. They help to create a strong brand identity. Furthermore, the boxes themselves can be used as a marketing tool. Companies can include flyers, coupons, or discounts in the boxes to draw customers back to their website. They allow customers to identify your company and your products quickly. Boxes are also an ideal way to announce new products or promotions. You can print the boxes with your message and send them directly to your customers.

Now that it's been gifted, I can share the horrible thing I included in @iamtheshriekingguineapig's Christmas gift. 🤣
I was picking up some last-minute items at Menards when I saw these ugly little plastic lantern ornaments on clearance:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(retail site image, they don't look that good in real life)
So I bought one, painted it gold (ultimately had to use a paint Sharpie because nothing else would stick to the PVC), then made burning Zhao Yunlan art in Photoshop, printed it, and stuck it inside. Assembled the whole thing the night before our gift exchange. Put it inside her gift box. Waited for the outraged screaming when she found it.
(I was not disappointed.)
Tumblr media
If anyone else wants to make themselves a cursed Guardian Lantern ornament, here's the art:
Tumblr media
The specific ornament I used is here, but I'm sure there are better quality ones out there.
And even though this whole thing is extremely cursed, I'm still claiming it for my @guardianbingo square "holiday," because it IS technically a Christmas ornament. 🎄

there’s something so bittersweet and lovely about fanfic, at it’s core. it’s so impermeable, because it’s so individual. fics don’t get finished. fics get lost because they were typed out and sent to friends, in the 70s, and somewhere along the way someone packed it up in a cardboard box and their kids shuffled it to the attic. websites go down. archives get built, but then people lose faith in the story or the canon or the creator and delete them. you read it at like, 3am, and can’t remember the title months later when you look for it again.
the tiktok these comments are from was lamenting about the loss of a favourite fic—it (the tiktok) had 85k+ likes, and over 700 comments, mostly similar to these. people talking about downloading fics to read on a tablet only for them to disappear the next day. using the wayback machine and combing through results, just to find something they loved. i think it’s sweet because it’s so human—how easily we love something, and how easily we lose it. i used to print out my favourite fics, as a kid—i still have a binder of them, buried under yearbooks and the old journals i kept during those topsy turvy preteen years. i could tell you the overarching plot to a Cardcaptor Sakura fantasy AU i read (and loved; it became my personality for months afterwards) but i can’t remember how it ended, or if it even did. i finally broke down and signed up for an account on AO3 specifically to bookmark an old, old fic that i had read somewhere else, years and years and years ago and found again on AO3 only because i accidentally stumbled on the author here on tumblr (i had only found the fic in the first place all those years ago because of a playlist). i used the same shade of lipstick for years purely because a fic i really liked had the main character apply it (it was a limited edition one at the time; i bought my first one from a ebay seller in the UK at double the retail price, lmao) while the love interest watched them, but i can’t remember the name of it, only how it made me feel (and how, for years afterwards, i would wear that shade whenever i felt like the day had something promising to it).
one of the first anon’s i ever got, in the early days of this tumblr, was someone who asked me if it was okay if they downloaded surrender—and of course it was. of course it is. there was a point, during the final stretch when i was trying to write the last chapter, that i almost lost the entirety of what i had written for that fic—and i mean, it was on AO3 by that stage so it would’ve only set me back a chapter or so, but it goes to show how fragile things can be. how sometimes fics only last in tiny ways—because of the unfinished PDF file someone downloads. The patchy memory of someone’s who’s jumbling it and three other fics together. Because someone wore the same shade of lipstick you mentioned, off-hand, for years afterwards.
(this is a love letter to the silent readers; the silent savers. the lurkers. fandom and the internet at large is made of lurkers (eighty-five thousand likes. seven hundred comments). people who saved fics and waybacked them and will reread them, even uncompleted. telling each other we did a good job, that we liked this or we liked that is wonderful, and fun, and a great (and important) way to build a community and has also given me my current friends—but sometimes something you make will matter and live on in a way you will never, ever know. and it’s just how it is. it’s part of the fun and it’s part of the charm. it’s just how we work as people.)

I'll be real here and say I have not watched the Netflix Wednesday doll. Not because of any dislike towards it, but because I've gotten so invested in multiple Netflix shows that literally get cancelled on a cliffhanger and I feel like I waste my time getting invested in something with no ending. I find it incredibly difficult to even revisit them because there's no payoff to it so I just avoid Netflix shows nowadays.
But, like every annoying Millennial who's a bit quirky, I love the 90s Addams Family movies and have a fondness for other iterations of them whenever they get rebooted, so I was excited for a Wednesday Addams doll.
I'm honestly surprised by the rollout of the dolls in the UK because ever since moving to the UK I think the toy distribution is absolute bollocks, and it's really blunted my enthusiasm for new dolls.
But I saw these dolls in person, and it really ignited that passion I had for G1 doll hunting being able to handpick the doll in person. I'm really glad I did as the quality control was really bad in person. Out of the 10 dolls I saw there, three had severe lip rubs against their packaging, a lot had wonk eye and the outfits had sewing issues.
In the end, I picked out the one whose eyes were printed slightly lower and wider, as it reminded me of early Indonesian made G1 doll screenings, and she had a passable outfit from what I saw.
I'm honestly surprised at how thin the packaging feels in hand, and almost flimsy. I'm not shocked how common lip rub is as I feel like even when I holding the box it kept pressing up against her face.
While I do like the little Monster High nods like the spiderwebs and Isi Dawndancer's diary on the packaging, I'm kinda underwhelmed at how much this doll is being charged for at retail price. It's passable but definitely requires some careful consideration.
