Chapter 13:
Dream sequence **
The final door opens to a familiar room.
“Is this... my room at the Marina Blanca Motel?” Nicky replied.
And on the bed, writhing in sexual ecstasy...
“Oh my God, that’s me!”
But it isn’t the wanton moans escaping her dreaming self’s lips that make the blood drain from her face...it’s the sight of Chris sitting beside her, a look of deep concentration on his face as his hands over over her body.
“It’s the safest to feed while humans dream.” Chris answered.
The Nicky in the bed sighs blissfully- dreaming, she knows, of a lover on a twilight beach.
“And erotic dreams yield the most energy.” Chris replied.
She staggered back, her heart in her throat.
“It’s was Chris! I thought they were just dreams, but the whole time it was him! I feel so...confused. How is this happening?”
The Chris at the sleeping Nicky’s side lowers his forehead to hers, an unearthly golden glow suffusing his body as she comes. Sated, he rises from the bed.
“Do you understand now?” Chris replied.
“You...you fed on me...” Nicky answered.
“I didn’t seek you out, but I sensed the strength of your life force the night we met.” Chris answered.
“You fed on me!” Nicky answered angrily.
“Only because I knew it wouldn’t harm you.” Chris replied.
He reaches for her, but she shoved him away with all her might.
“That doesn’t make it better, Chris! I didn’t consent to it! To any of it! Nicky yelled.
“I know, Nicky, and I’m sorry. Please believe that I never meant for it to go this far.” Chris replied sadly.
“I do believe you.” Nicky answered. “And we’re finished here.”
Dream sequence end.
She breaks free of the dream, waking abruptly in Chris’s library. Chris is crouched before her, concerned blue eyes boring into her. She rises unsteadily from her chair. The room spins.
“Carful, now-“ Chris answered.
He reaches out, as if to help her up.
Sighing, she let him reach out to steady her. His strong arms are careful, almost delicate as he touches her.
“Are you all right?” Chris answered.
She leans against him as her visions swims.
“I...I’m fine.” Nicky answered.
Gently, she breaks away from him.
“Chris, I need to think.” Nicky answered. “No matter how you look at it, this is a betrayal of trust. I can’t believe I thought... I can’t believe I wanted...”
“Nicky...” Chris answered sadly.
“Don’t.” Nicky replied. She sighs. “I’m sorry, Chris, but I need space. I don’t want to see you right now. Maybe not ever.”
She turns on her heels, fleeing into the safety of the bright morning sun.
A car pulls up just as she reaches the street. Judith rolls down the window.
“Need a lift?” Judith answers.
Somehow, she’s not surprised to see her. She clamber silently into the passenger’s side, and Judith pulls away from the curb.
“You know, don’t you? What he is.” Nicky answered.
“I did. He texted a while ago for me to pick you up.” Judith answered. “He thought you might need to talk to someone...human.”
“Oh my God...” Nicky replied sadly.
Nicky scrubbed her hands over her face. “I’m so overwhelmed, all I can do is...cry.”
Huge, soul-shattering sobs tear from her throat. Judith says nothing, only hands her a pack of tissues.
“Let it all out, honey. That’s the only thing for it.” Judith replied.
Nicky sniffles into the tissue as Judith parks near a park.
“How long have you know about him?” Nicky answered.
“Why...since about 1942.” Judith answered.
Her jaw drops.
“But...you’d have been-“ Nicky answered.
“A little girl?” Judith answered. “I was. In occupied France. My parents died in the resistance. When the Allied forces arrived, Chris found me hiding in what remained of our village. He took me in. Not long after that, I walked in on him...”
“Feeding?” Nicky answered.
“I was trying to think of a nicer word for it, but yes.” Judith replied.
“And... you weren’t afraid?” Nicky replied.
Judith shrugs.
“I was a child of war, honey. By that age, I’d seen humans do worse.” Judith replied. “ Chris’s unique needs were easy enough for me to accept.”
Judith takes in the scenery, than looks back at Nicky.
“How about a walk? I think some fresh air might do us both some good.” Judith answered.
Nicky nods, following her lead.
“What I don’t know is why Chris decided to tell you about all this now.” Judith answered.
“I...might have forced his hand a little.” Nicky answered awkwardly.
She giver her a quick recap of her confrontation with Chris , and her expression grows steadily sadder.
“I had no idea about your sister I’m so sorry.” Judith replied.
“Did you know about Adrian?” Nicky replied.
“Only that he existed and Chris hadn’t seen him over a hundred years.” Judith answered. “If I’d suspected that bastard was the one who took my Denise...”
Despite herself, she smile. “Judith...I’m pretty sure you’d have kicked his ass. You’re a tough old broad.”
“And don’t you forget it!” Judith smiled.
Nicky lapse into easy silence as she walked, watching the boats drift along the clam water.
“Judith? Did Chris ever feed on you?” Nicky answered.
Judith shakes her head.
“Never. He makes a paint of never feeding on people he knows personally.” Judith replied.
“Until now.” Nicky answered.
“Until now.” Judith replied. “So you can see, then, why I suspect you’re so special.”
“I don’t feel special. Just used. Manipulated.” Nicky answered sadly.
“Well. I do see why.” Judith replied.
Judith inclines her head toward the car. “Come on. Let’s head back.” Judith answered.
When Nicky returns, Judith pauses.
“I brought something to show you, if you’ll let me. To shed some light on who Chris really is.” Judith replied.
“Show me. Please.” Nicky replied.
Judith pops the trunk, producing a shoebox full of photos. She hands her one.
“This was taken the day he found me.” Judith replied.
Nicky heart aches for the little girl in her ruined village.
“Oh, Judith...” Nicky replied sadly.
“It gets better from here, I promise.” Judith answered.
Judith shows her 15th birthday. Her high school graduation. Her wedding. And ever present in the background....
“Chris. He was with her every step of the way. No wonder she loves him so much.”
Nicky’s eyes begin to well as Judith hands her a portrait of herself in her 20s.
“You were so beautiful.” Nicky answered. “Thank you for sharing this with me, Judith.”
“Do you understand now? Who he is?” Judith replied.
“I think I’m starting to.” Nicky replied.
Nicky sighs.
“Chris didn’t ask to be what he is,Nicky. He’d be something else in a heartbeat if he could.” Judith answered. “But he is a good man. And he is crazy about you.”
“Judith-“ Nicky replied.
Judith waves her hand.
“You have every right to be furious with him, I know. But I also think it may be worth giving him a second chance.” Judith replied. “Just promise me you’ll think about it.”
“I....will.” Nicky answered. “I have a lot of thinking to do.”
“Thank you, honey.” Judith replied.
Judith drops you off at home, and Nicky goes about her day as if her entire world hadn’t just changed forever. Her final client of the day is an exhausted-looking woman. She wrings her hands nervously as she sits on Nicky’s couch.
“Can you tell me a little about what brings you here,Mrs. Sahir?” Nicky replied.
She frowns down at her hands.
“I...I’m afraid to go to sleep.” Mrs. Sahir replied.
“ And why is that? Nicky replied.
“It’s ridiculous.” Mrs. Sahir replied.
“Not if it’s negatively impacting your life, it isn’t.” Nicky replied.
She breathes a heavy sigh.
“Every time I close my eyes... I see monsters lying in wait to attack me.” Mrs. Sahir replied sadly. She clenches her fists.
“But I’m sick of being afraid! I’m ready to take control of my life.” Mrs. Sahir replied angrily.
And in that moment, Nicky realize it’s time for her to do the same.
That night, Nicky returned to Chris’s house to find him watching the stars through a telescope. The stars above look like small crystals, the moon like a beacon. Yet, somehow, Chris out shines it all.
“You... look like you have a lot on your mind. Anything I can do to help?” Nicky answered.
Chris whips around at the sound of her voice.
“Nicky!” Chris yelled. “ I didn’t think I would ever see you again.”
“Yeah, well. That makes two of us.” Nicky replied.
“What changed?” Chris answered.
“Nothing. Everything.” Nicky answered. “Chris, I ...”
But her words fail her.
Nicky takes his face in her hands and kiss him. He stiffens in surprise....
“Nicky!” Chris answered.
...then kisses up her back passionately, clutching her to him as though her never wants to let her go.
“Nicky...” Chris answered blushing.
“Mmmm...”Nicky replied.
She wind her arms around his neck, parting her lips to admit his questing tongue.
“I’m taking control of my life. And I know I want Chris to be part of it.”
He holds Nicky close, and she feels as though she could conquer the world. But then he steps away, his blue eyes pained.
“You should go.” Chris replied sadly.
“...why?” Nicky answered.
“Isn’t it obvious, Nicky?” Chris answered.
He lets out a long sigh.
“You know what I am, Nicky. What I’ve done. What I’ll continue to do.” Chris replied sadly. “I’m... I’m a monster.”
Something in her heart feels like it breaks as he says that.
“Chris... you’re not a monster.”Nicky replied.
“Hah.” Chris replied.
His smile is bitter, but she shakes her head.
“You’re not. And I mean that.” Nicky answered. “I’m not going to stand here and tell you what you did was okay because it wasn’t. But I understand. And I forgive you.”
Nicky cups his cheek, looking deeply into his eyes.
“You mean so much to me, Chris.” Nicky replied. “I know that makes no sense because I just met you, but I’ve never felt this way before. It’s new, and it’s terrifying, and I don’t know which way is up anymore, but...I do know I’d regret it forever if I let you go. So I forgive you. Chris. I forgive you completely.”
He swallows hard, averting his eyes.
“And Adrian? Do you for him, too?” Chris answered. “ I preyed on you, just as he preyed on Clare and Denise.”
“Chris, you’re nothing like your brother!” Nicky answered.
“I’m exactly like him, Nicky. Right down to our DNA.” Chris answered sadly.
“Chris, that’s ... silly. Our actions make us who we are, not our genetics. You’re not like Adrian, Chris. You’re not even close, and I’m pretty sure you know it. I think what you may actually be struggling with is a fear of emotional vulnerability.” Nicky replied.
Chris laughs.
“Ever the therapist.” Chris replied.
“You have to admit you kind of need one.” Nicky replied with a smirk.
“You have no idea.” Chris replied with a smile.
Then, he pulls her into his arms, kissing her as though his life depends on it. But when she reaches to undo his belt, he stops her.
“We can’t. Nicky.” Chris answered.
“It sort of... feels like we can.” Nicky replied.
He steps away, putting some distance between his erection and her misbehaving hands.
“Not in the physical world. It’s would be too dangerous for you.” Chris replied. “It’s too easy to lose control at the moment of climax. To take too much.”
“Chris...I trust you.” Nicky answered.
“But I don’t trust myself.” Chris replied.
Disappointed though she is, she can understand his concern.
“What do you propose, then?” Nicky replied.
“Perhaps you should take control.” Chris replied.
With a smile that makes her shiver, he takes her hand and leads her into one of the bedrooms. He lays her on the bed and draws her down into sleep.
**somewhat dream sequence **
Nicky awakes nude in a familiar study.
“No fair.” Nicky answered.
Chris grins wickedly.
“Maybe I need to be taught some manners. What do you think, doctor?” Chris answered.
“Get on the couch.” Nicky answered.
“You didn’t say “please” Chris replied.
Nicky seized his chin on her hand.
“And I won’t.” Nicky answered.
“Yes, Doctor.” Chris replied.
He stretches out, grinning as she straddles his hips. He reaches out for her, but she swats his hands away.
“No. Hands behind your head.” Nicky replied.
He obeys, his eyes sparkling with mischief.
“Oh, Dr. Ransom, what do you have in mind?” Chris replied.
“I don’t recall giving you permission to speak, Mr. Evans.” Nicky answered.
She catches his lower lip between her teeth, and he groans. She trails her hands lovingly down his body.
“Ahh...” Chris yelled.
Nicky giggles, pressing wet kisses down his abdomen. Chris draws in a sharp breath as she presses her lips to the head of his cock.
“Let’s see what other sounds I ca get you to make.” Nicky answered with a smirk.
He gasps as she licks a long stripe along the underside of cock...holds his breath as she flicks her tongue against the knot at the base of head...and moans loudly when she’s taken him in her mouth.
“Fuck...” Chris yelled.
She hums around him, her lips sliding wetly up and down his shaft.
“He even tastes good.”
She relaxes her throat, taking him deeper. Soon she feels his fingers in her hair, tugging her away.
“Not if you want this to last much longer.” Chris replied blushing red.
She drags her tongue back up his body and position herself over his hard cock.
“Say “please.” Nicky replied.
“Please.” Chris answered.
But then, Nicky feels a great sadness.
“I want to be with him in real life. I wan to be with him...”
Nicky closes her eyes, imagining that you’re being pulled from the dream.
“Wake up....”
She and Chris groan in unison...and she wakes suddenly with him Inside her.

Summary: Desire and temptation take over like never before. Is it too much to handle, or not enough?
Warning ⚠️: 18+ adults only
Word count: over 1k
Characters: Dr.Nicky Ransom (female reader, you, etc.)x Chris Evans,Denise Ames (Cousin), Tim ( Denise boyfriend), clones, evil twin look-a-like (aka Adrian pretending to be Chris)
Chapter 11:
*dream sequence *
You look between Chris and his copy.
“This is...weird. I know this is a dream, but Whoa.” Nicky answered in shock.
They both chuckle.
“I can make more, Nicky.” Chris answered.
“You...you can?” Nicky answered startled.
“I can.” Chris answered.
He draws nearer to you, placing a soft, promising kiss on your lips. His clone comes up behind you and plants a soft kiss on the back of your neck.
“H-how many can you make?” Nicky answered blushing.
“To start, how about this.” Chris answered.
Three more mirror images of Chris appear. Their taut muscles gleam in the low light, and 10 brilliant blue eyes fall on you.
“What do you say,Nicky? We can date on you. Treat you like the princess you are.” Chris answered. “What do you want?”
“I could go for a cup of tea.” Nicky answered.
Quickly, you’re settled in at a round table with Chris and all his clones in a lovely bedroom. A tea kettle is being passed around. Cucumber sandwiches rest on fine, china plates.
“This is delicious. What’s in the tea?” Nicky answered.
“It’s a mix of cloves and honey.” Chris answered.
“It’s wonderful.” Nicky answered.
“Pass the sugar,please?”Clone 1 answered.
“Of course,Chris .” Clone 2 answered.
“Thank you, Chris.” Clone 1 answered.
“Does anyone else ever get a horrible itch after shaving their face?” Clone 3 answered.
“That means you’re cutting it too close to the grain. Ease up, Chris.” Clone 4 answered chuckling.
The six of you chatter amiably until all the tea has been consumed.
*end of dream sequence *
When you wake up, you feel yourself blushing bright red.
“Well, that was the wildest dream yet...”
Saturday evening finds you buzzing with excitement as you prepare for your date.
“Is it silly to be this stoked about a double date? No. So what if Denise and Tim will be there, too? It’s still a date. It’s normal to be excited.”
Nicky rifles through her closet.
“Hmm. What should I wear for a museum date?”
Nicky smooth’s the dress over her hips and admires herself in the mirror.
“Pretty damn stylish if I say so myself.”
Nicky gives herself one last appraising look and heads out the door.
You arrive at the museum just as the sun sets to find Denise and Tim waiting outside.
“Ooh, look at you, sexy mama!” Denise answered. “Chris won’t know what hit him!”
“Oh, stop...”Nicky answered blushing.
“Haha!” Tim answered laughing.
Tim’s arm rests loosely around Denise’s waist, and you smile.
“Never in a million years did I expect to se Denise this happy with a normal guy. There’s no way Tim would never... break into a Arby’s drive-through. I get Steve was hungry, but it was 11AM. I still don’t understand why he couldn’t just use the front door.”
Your musings are cut short by Chris’s arrival. He greets you with a warm hug, that makes your heart flutter.
“You look beautiful, Nicky.” Chris answered.
“So do you.” Nicky answered. “I mean, thank you.”
“All right, come on! We only have three hours before the museum closes!” Denise answered with excitement.
“Denise....that sounds like plenty of time.” Nicky answered.
“For lesser souls, maybe!” Denise answered.
“Okay, okay!” Nicky answered smiling.
Denise grabs Tim’s hand, practically skipping as she drags him toward the entrance.
“I hope everyone’s excited for art lectures! I have some very serious thoughts about Millais’s brushwork!” Denise yelled from the distance.
Nicky grins at Tim.
“Are you excited for art lectures?” Nicky answered.
“Of course! A teacher should always be eager to learn!” Time answered.
Beside you, Chris chuckles. He moves closer to your side, his hand brushing deliberately against yours.
“He wants to hold my hand.”
You turn your palm out, smiling encouragingly at Chris as he entwines his fingers with yours.
“You are entirely too cute sometimes.” Nicky answered.
“Part of my overall charm, I hope.” Chris answered.
“Very much so.” Nicky answered.
You walk hand in hand through the gallery as Denise waxes poetic about composition, lighting, and negative space.
“She could put the museum tour guides out of a job!”
Gradually you split off into pairs, you and Chris continuing on as Tim listens raptly to Denise’s highlights on Thomas Lawrence. You set a leisurely pace, commenting now and then on pieces or details that stand out to you before slipping g back into comfortable silence.
“This is nice.”
You smile down at your joined hands. As if noticing your gaze, chis raises your hand to his lips, grinning when you blush.
“Yeah. He’s way too cute.”
A certain painting catches your eye, stopping you in your tracks.
“The Nightmare “ by Fuseli.”
The painting is one you’ve seen before, and it sends a prickle of unease down your spine.
“The Nightmare “ again?”
“Why is “The Nightmare” here? Isn’t it in your house?” Nicky answered with shock.
“Ah, well. The one hanging in my home is of course a print. This appears to be the original.” Chris answered.
You shudder.
“Is everything all right?” Chris answered with concern.
“No. It’s just this painting. It’s...unsettling.” Nicky answered. “It’s so uncomfortable to look at. Fuseli clearly had a deep understanding of dreams and the unconscious mind.”
“All great artist do, I think.” Chris answered.
“Hmmm. You may be right.” Nicky answered.
“What are you guys looking at?” Denise answered. “Oh , “The Nightmare.” Yeah, this one always gives me the creeps. I wonder what inspired Fuseli to paint it?”.
You shrug.
“In the old days, people thought dreams were the result of supernatural forces.” Nicky answered. “Now we know they’re just what your brain does while you’re sleeping.”
“Which is comforting and way less exciting at the same time!” Denise answered.
Denise, Tim, and Chris begin to move on, but your eyes are drawn once again, to “The Nightmare.” The fine hair on your arms stands on ends.
“Nicky? Is everything all right?” Chris answered with concern.
You swallow hard.
“Yeah. Yeah, I’m just...A little spooked.” Nicky answered. “I guess “The Nightmare “ kind of got to me.”
“Do you think some fresh air might help?” Chris answered.
You nod, following him out onto the veranda.
The two of you sit down on a marble bench overlooking the ornamental gardens. You breathe in the crisp November air.
“It’s starting to feel like fall.” Nicky answered.
You shiver on cue.
“Okay, that one was because I was cold!” Nicky answered.
“That’s easily remedied.” Chris answered.
He holds out his arm to you.
“Chris is so precious...and I am so freaking cold!”
You slide under Chris’s arm, and he wraps you up in his warmth.
“Much better.” Nicky answered.
He kisses the top of your head.
“I’m really happy to be here tonight. With you.” Nicky answered.
“Me too.” Chris answered.
You gasp.
“I almost forgot! Look what I found in my storage room the other day!” Nicky squealed.
You pull out a photograph.
“This is my sister,Clare.” Nicky answered. “Wasn’t she...beautiful. She had the most soulful eyes.”
But Chris doesn’t speak. His eyes widen, and he pales.
“Chris? Are you okay?” Nicky answered with concern.
“Ah- yes. Yes, just... taken off- guard.” Chris answered. “Your sister strongly resembles a...very old friend.”
His tone tells you all you need to know about that friends fate.
“I’m sorry, Chris.” Nicky answered sadly.
He shakes his head.
“Don’t apologize. I’m the one who made the situation awkward.” Chris answered.
He gives your hand a gentle squeeze.
“Clare was lovely. And I’m honored that you shared this with me.” Chris answered.
He kisses your cheek just as Denise and Time bounding over.
“Emergency change of plans!” Denise yells. “The new molecular gastronomy place down the street is holding a soft opening tonight, and my friend can totally get us in!”
“Let’s go eat some food that doesn’t even look like food anymore!” Tim answered smiling.
“That sounds...cool,but, I’m not quite in the mood for it tonight. You guys go ahead, though.” Nicky answered.
“You’re sure?” Tim answered.
“Positive. You two have fun.” Nicky answered.
They bid you goodnight and scamper off, talking excitedly about foam. You smile at Chris.
“Well, what now? Should we...go back to my place?” Nicky answered. “Netflix and takeout sounds pretty great right about now.”
“I...need to get going, actually.” Chris answered. “I’m sorry to cut the evening short, but I have some work to attend to.”
“Oh. Okay.” Nicky answered sadly.
“Raincheck, thought?” Chris answered.
“Sure.” Nicky answered.
Chris rises from the bench, leaving you colder in his absence. You stand up after him.
“Nicky.” Chris answered.
“Yes?” Nicky answered.
He leans down, moving as if to kiss you. You stare at his lips.
“He’s going to kiss me.”
You take Chris in your arms, kissing him back softly.
“I had a good time tonight , Chris.” Nicky answered.
“So did I.” Chris answered.
He hugs you tightly, seemingly reluctant to let you go.
“I don’t want I let him go, either.”
You kiss him again, more deeply this time, earning a low moan that makes heat pool between your legs. You’re both breathing heavily when you finally part. You reach for him once more, but he steps away.
“Tempting as you are, Nicky, I really do have work to do.” Chris answered.
The saucy grin doesn’t quite reach his eyes, though.
“Well. Goodnight, then.” Nicky answered.
“Goodnight, Nicky. Sweet dreams.” Chris answered.
After spending the rest of the night in a sexually frustrates funk, however, you suspect your dreams will be far from sweet.
“I’m really not looking forward to whatever my brain comes up with tonight.”
“The Nightmare “ creeps into your mind again, and you shudder.
“Ugh. Here’s hoping I don’t dream at all.”
*dream sequence *
But dream you do.
You dream of Chris who treats you cruelly, his touch brushing your skin, his kisses leaving your lips bitten and bloody.
“Chris...you’re hurting me!” Nicky yelled.
“Am I?” Chris answered.
He laughs coldly, pinning you against his chest.
“But this is what you want, isn’t it?” Chris answered. “You’re just as weak as Clare was.”
You struggle, but he holds you fast.
“She was never meant to live in this world. You’ve tired to survive by denying what you are.” Chris answered.” How is that working out for you, Nicky? Always running away?”
With one last burst of energy you break free and escape into the darkness, his mocking laughter echoing after you.
“I need to get out of here! There! Maybe that’s a way out...”
You follow the light...into a place you, know all too well.
The creature crouches over the young woman, poised for the kill.
“I need to save her! “
You try to move, to fling yourself at him. But no matter how hard you struggle, your feet are rooted to the spot.
“No! Not this again!” Nicky yelled.
The creature lifts it misshapen head, staring directly into your eyes. It’s bares it teeth at you in a ghostly smile.
“Yes...” the creature answered.
It dissolves into the vampire from your nightmare, hovering above Clare’s bloodless corpse as it beckons you near.
“Yes, Nicky. Come closer.” The creature answered.
And though every instinct tells you to run, your feet begin moving toward him.
“That’s it. You are curious, aren’t you? Come, then. Look upon my face at last.” The creature answered.
He removes his cloak with a flourish...and your heart drops into your stomach.
“No....”Nicky yelled.
“Yes. You know now, don’t you? But then, perhaps you e always known.”Chris answered.
You shake your head furiously back away.
“No. I don’t believe it.” Nicky answered in shock.
“Oh, but you do believe it, Nicky. It makes perfect sense, doesn’t it?” Chris answered.
“No. Chris.... this isn’t you, I know it!” Nicky answered.”I’m just having a nightmare! You- the real you-you’d never hurt me. Chris is a good man!”
He throws his head back and laughs.
“You are a loyal little creature, aren’t you?” Chris answered. “Pity the one of your affection is so woefully undeserving.”
“No. No, this isn’t real.” Nicky answered. “It’s just a bad dream...”
“Ah, but it isn’t! “ Chris answered. “Search your feelings, Nicky. You know what I am. What I really am.”
You shake your head again, but something about his words rings true.
“Chris... recognized Clare...”
Horror chills you to the core, and Chris laughs. He closes the distance stern you. Before you can blink.
“Yes, you, know!” Chris answered with a devilishly smile. “ you, know I’m not human, and still you want me. How very deviant of you.”
He lifts a hand toward you.
“Fuck that! I’m going to... slap his hand away.”
You smack his hand sharply. He takes a step back, staring at his hand as though he’s never seen it before.
“You’re...fighting me?” Chris answered startled.”Here?”
A lascivious grin stretches over his features.
“Oh, you are an interesting creature, Nicky.” Chris answered. “But how much strength do you have left, I wonder?”
You’re in no mood to find out.
You turn your heel, sprinting into the blackness.
“You can’t run forever, Nicky!” Chris yelled.
*end of dream sequence *
You wake in a cold sweat, your heart pounding.
“It was a dream. It was just a dream.” Nicky answered.
The image of Clare’s lifeless body swims in front of your eyes.
“No wonder my brain shut me off my lucid dreams when she died. It must have been protecting itself. I need to clear my head.”
You sit up, selecting one of Clare’s old sketchbooks from the bedside table to distract yourself. But the sketchbook is Clare’s last before her death, and the images grow progressively darker and more twisted as you turn the pages.
“This.. isn’t working as well as I’d hoped. Imagine living with all of this emotional turmoil inside you. Poor Clare...”
You turn to the final sketch, and your blood runs cold. Staring up at you is a photorealistic portrait of a familiar face.
“Oh no...this is.. this is a drawing of Chris.”

Chapter 14:
Nicky awoken in the physical world with Chris buried inside her, and she remain very much alive.
“What happened?” Nicky replied.
“You pulled us from the dream.” Chris replied.
You blink rapidly, shocked that you were able to do so.
“I... wanted to be with you. Here. In person, I mean.” Nicky answered.
Nicky laughs.
“But hey! Looks like I didn’t die.” Nicky replied.
Chris, however, does not share your enthusiasm.
“That was a dirty trick, Nicky.” Chris replied.
“Chris...it was an accident. I didn’t mean to pull us from the dream! I guess I just wanted to be with you so badly that it kind of... happened.” Nicky replied. “But look!”
You wiggle your hips, wrenching a groan from his chest.
“It’s fine!” Nicky replied with a smile.
“It won’t stay fine.” Chris answered sadly.
You sigh defeatedly as he rolls you off him. Something occurs to you, and you frown.
“Chris... are you a virgin?” Nicky replied.
He heaves a heavy sigh.
“No. I’m not a virgin.” Chris replied. “That’s how I know I’ll hurt you.”
“Because it’s happened before?” Nicky replied.
He nods.
“Chris... what happened, exactly?” Nicky answered.
He lets out a bitter laugh.
“Not exactly the kind of pillow talk I had in mind.” Chris answered. “But you deserve to know. I was untouched until I was 20 or so. Adrain decided to remedy that by taking me to a local brothel. Everything was fine until I... finished.”
He stares morosely up at the ceiling.
“Something about me... that level of physical intimacy is dangerous. It brought her unspeakable pain.” Chris replied.
His eyes darken with self-loathing.
“I reacted quickly enough to spare her life, but I didn’t leave her with much of one. She lost her ability to move, to even speak. She could no longer take care of herself.” Chris answered.
“Oh my God, Chris...” Nicky replied sadly.
Nicky curls yourself around him, lost for any better way to soothe his hurt. He seems surprised by your reaction, but quickly returns the embrace, wrapping you tightly in his arms.
“That wasn’t your fault, Chris.” Nicky replied. “You didn’t know what would happen. How could you have?”
“Funny you should ask.” Chris replied. “Because when I told Adrian what I’d done, he laughed.”
He takes a breath, pulling Nicky closer to him.
“He’d known exactly what would happen to that poor woman.” Chris answered.
Despite his warmth, Nicky feels a great sadness radiating off of him.
“He’d wanted me to drain her.” Chris replied angrily. “Completely. He was hoping I’d murder her.”
“What? Why?” Nicky replied. “What was he hoping to accomplish.”
Chris lets out a hollow laugh.
“He honestly thought he was helping me, if you can believe it.” Chris answered. “It was the best way for our kind to feed, he told me. It made us stronger. More powerful. He’d been doing it for years. And he thought it was high time I started “embracing our full potential,” as he puts it.”
“Wait, so he just ran around England killing people? No one cared? Nicky answered.
“I’m sure the women’s loved ones did, but what could they do?” Chris answered. “He method of killing left no wounds, no evidence. Even if the authorities were called, what could they have done?”
He turns haunted blue eyes on Nicky.
“Now you see, Nicky, why we can never be together physically. What I did to that woman... I can’t risk it happening to you, too.” Chris replied.
And yet, some indefinable instinct tells Nicky that it won’t happen. Nicky bites her lips, collecting her thoughts.
“You told me your mind can sense humans with strong life forces. Was the woman in the brothel one of them?” Nicky replied.
Chris shakes his head.
“But I am, you said.” Nicky answered. “So... it won’t hurt me.”
Nicky kisses him, consciously pouring her energy into it.
“Nicky!” Chris yelled.
As if a switch had been flipped, he gets hard again, and Nicky stifles a giggle.
“Does it feel different in the waking world?” Nicky replied.
Chris nods, color rising in his cheeks.
“Does...everything feel different?” Nicky replied.
He shudders as Nicky sucks his earlobe between her lips.
“Yes.” Chris replied.
Nicky nips lightly at his throat.
“Different in a good way?” Nicky answered.
He nods, and she works her way down, lavishing hisnflushed skin with sweet kisses and gentle bites.
“Nicky...” Chris replied.
He moans as her tongue teases his nipples... and gasps when it dips into his navel.
“Do you want more, Chris?” Nicky replied.
Nicky scrapes her teeth along his hip bone.
“If I start to lose control...” Chris replied.
“Then you’ll stop” Nicky replied.
She kisses the tip of his cock.
“I trust you.” Nicky answered.
Nicky helps in surprise as he rolls her beneath him, pinning her wrists loosely above her head.
“Has anyone ever told you you’re an incredibly stubborn woman?” Chris replied with a smirk.
“But...one who makes a persuasive argument?” Nicky replied smiling.
He chuckles, nibbling your earlobe.
“A very persuasive argument.” Chris answered.
“Prove it.” Nicky replied.
“And how shall I prove it, Nicky?” Chris replied smirking.
He smiles wickedly, and you flush.
“Prove it by.. making love to me. Right here, right now.” Nicky replied.
Nicky parts her thighs for him, and he drives into her in one smooth motion.
“Ah!” Nicky squealed. “Ah...”
“God, you’re wet.” Chris answered heavily.
And Nicky was so wet that you can hear every slick movement he makes inside her body.
“Chris... harder!” Nicky yelled.
He moves, pounding into her with intense force. He shifts his position slightly, and the new angle makes her moan.
“Oh, right there!” Nicky yelled.
“Here?” Chris replied.
She moans his name, clutching tightly to him.
“Do you want more, Nicky?” Chris answered.
“Chris... yes, more. Just like that.” Nicky replied.
He obeys, moving into that sweet spot over and over again.
“Like this?” Chris replied.
“Mmmm..yes.” Nicky replied breathless.
He chuckles, nuzzling her neck.
“You’d rice me crazy, Nicky.” Chris replied.
He slides a hand down to play with her clit.
“Ah...” Nicky moaned.
“Nicky..”Chris whispers.
He circles his fingers faster in time with his thrusts, making her whimper.
“Chris!” Nicky squealed loudly.
She come hard, her toes curling as orgasm washes over her.
“Oh...” Nicky replied.
For a moment, all she could do is lie panting beneath him. Then the haze of satisfaction clears, and she frowns at the still-hard cock he with draws from her.
“You didn’t come?” Nicky answered.
“I, ah...couldn’t. I’m sorry.” Chris replied blushing.
“Chris... did I do something wrong?” Nicky answered.
He shakes his head, kissing her tenderly.
“It’s nothing to do with you. Nicky.” Chris replied. “I think I just...got into my own head a little.”
Nicky rubs his back soothingly.
“Why don’t you put us to sleep and let me fix that?” Nicky replied.
“And you’ll keep us there?” Chris answered.
Nicky licks her lips deliberately and crosses her heart, drawing his hot blue gaze to her breasts.
“Promise.” Nicky answered smiling.
He shivers.
“You’ll be the death of me, Dr. Ransom.” Chris replied.
“It’ll only be a little death, though.” Nicky answered.
*sleep dream sex sequence *
Chris makes a delighted noise, and the waking world dissolves into a dream.
“This is starting to feel pretty...natural. Like I was meant for this, somehow.”
Nicky presses him back onto the fainting couch, and he moans loudly as she sinks onto his cock.
“Nicky...” Chris answered.
She rides him, relishing the mindless pleasure writ plainly on his beautiful face.
“God, your breast are amazing.” Chris replied.
Nicky throws her head back and laughs.
“That’s really where your mind is right now?” Nicky replied laughing.
“They’re right there, and they are perfect.” Chris replied.
Nicky giggles, kissing him soundly.
“You are adorable, Chris Evans.” Nicky replied. “And you’re going to come for me now.”
She quickens her pace and he groans, his head falling back against the couch.
“That’s it. Come for me, baby.” Nicky answers.
“Ah!” Chris yelled out.
You both gasp as he pulses within you... but when the dream fades you’re lying chastely side by side. *dream sequence ends**
“So, what does your weekend look like?” Chris replied.
“Pillow talk, Chris ?”Nicky answered smiling.
“Is that an issue?” Chris answered smiling.
“Nope. It’s...sweet. Actually, I’m insanely busy this weekend. I’m going to a medical conference. I should pack as soon as I get home, actually.” Nicky replied.
“Will other psychologists be there?” Chris answered.
“Yeah! Psychologists, cardiologists. Kind of bunch of people across the board.”Nicky answered.
“You’re an incredible woman, Nicky. Did you know that?” Chris replied.
“...thank you.” Nicky answered blushing.
“You’re very welcome.” Chris replied. “What do you do outside of psychology?”
“Not much, honestly.” Nicky replied. “What about you? Do you do anything outside Dreamseekers Foundation?”
His chuckle reverberates through his chest.
“I do, but it’s... ah,it’s boring.” Chris replied.
“Why do you say that? Do you...collect stamps?” Nicky answered. “Is there a boom of all the different stamps for the past hundred years?”
“Well, nothing that boring?” Chris answered smiling. “Still.. I’m sure you don’t want to hear about.”
You frown at the resignation in his voice.
“He really believes that, doesn’t he?”
“Chris... of course I want to learn more about you.” Nicky replied.
“Is that so?” Chris replied in shock.
“Is that an issue?” Nicky answered.
Nicky repeats his words back to him, and he laughs quietly.
“So, what’s your mysterious hobby?” Nicky replied.
“It’s hardly mysterious.” Chris answered smiling. “Painting. When I have time that is.”
“Chris, that’s amazing! Why didn’t you tell me?” Nicky answers.
“Oh, I hardly have the skill to warrant anything of great merit.” Chris replied.
“What kind of things do you paint?” Nicky replied.
“Portraiture, mostly. I live so long, you see, so I like to remember the faces of those who are important to me.” Chris answered. “I paint a picture of anyone who holds any significance in my heart.”
“I see.” Nicky replied.
Nicky blushes and wonders if he’ll ever paint her.
“I should get some new colors actually. I have someone new to paint.” Chris replied.
“You do?” Nicky answered shocked.
He rolls his eyes and gives her a pointed look.
“Oh...” Nicky replied blushing.
Nicky cuddles up beside him, the late hour- and encroaching sex coma- beginning to take its toll on her.
“Goodnight, Chris.” Nicky answered.
He kisses her hair.
“Goodnight, Nicky.” Chris replied.
Nicky drift into a deep, dreamless sleep...and awaken to bright sunlight streaming in from the window.
“Chris?” Nicky replied.
But the other side of the bed is empty.
So, she finds, is the rest of the house.
“Admittedly weird, but...I’ve seen Chris out in daylight before. Maybe there was a daytime meeting he couldn’t miss.”
And so she text Chris, then head home to pack for the weekend’s medical conference.
It isn’t until you’re in your hotel, hours later, that you begin to grow worried.
“Chris usually texts me back pretty quickly, but it’s been hours.”
Nicky calls him, but his phone goes straight to voicemail. Anxiety prickling at the back of her neck, she calls Judith, who answers on the first ring.
Phone call**
“I thought you might be calling.” Judith answers.
She reads you a text Chris sent her shortly before dawn.
“I don’t know how long I’ll be gone. Please look after Nicky.” Judith read aloud.
“I don’t understand.” Judith answers.
“I think I might.” Nicky answered.
“He...needs some time. He’s probably a little overwhelmed right now.”
Nicky hang up with Judith, and falls into a fitful sleep in the hotel bed.
*dream sequence *
The first thing you see when you begin to dream is..
“Chris!” Nicky yelled.
“Nicky. How lovely to see you.” Chris replied. (Aka it’s Adrian)
His cruel tone makes her heart sink, Nicky feels herself freeze on the spot.
“No. Not Chris.”
“Adrian.” Nicky replied.
“Ready to play, Nicky ?” Adrian replied.

Summary: it’s heating up between Dr.Nicky Ransom and Chris,Judith questions Nicky about Chris,Denise is finally home resting. Halloween party ?....
Word count: over 1k
Warning ⚠️: 18+ adults only.
Characters: Dr.Nicky Ransom x Chris Evans,Denise Ames (cousin),Judith (landlord,volunteer)
Chapter 6:
“Now, about you and Chris...”Judith answered.
You feel yourself blush.
Judith is way more perceptive than she has any right to be.
“Judith...there’s nothing going on between us.” Nicky answered. “He’s just helping me with Denise. That’s all.”
“Is it? What a shame. He seems very taken with you.” Judith answered with a smile.
“He does?... I mean- I don’t care.” Nicky answered.
Judith chuckles, shaking her head.
“Anyway, I have no idea what you’re talking about.” Nicky answered blushing.
“Cone on, honey. I’ve known you for some time now, and I wasn’t born yesterday!” Judith answered laughing. “You like him. I can tell.”
She doesn’t know the half of it. Especially since I’ve been having wild sex dreams about him lately...
“He’s quite a catch, isn’t he?” Judith answered smiling.
“Chris...really is a catch. I mean, I barely know him, but he seems pretty great.” Nicky answered blushing.
Judith grins wide, and you can’t help but blush.
“He is.” Judith answered with a smile. “So, are you going to ask him out?”
“Judith!” Nicky answered with shock.
“What? Denise is safe and sound now, and I know for a fact that you’re single.” Judith answered.
“Like I said, we barely know each other.” Nicky answered.
“So?” Judith answered.
Her smile softens into something kinder. “I’ve worked with Chris for some time now, and I can tell you that he’s a great man” Judith answered. “And it’s obvious that he likes you, too.”
You duck your head bashfully.
“I just can’t believe it’s taken us so long to meet.” Nicky answered. “Given the shared connection with you and Denise, I’d have expected our paths to cross much sooner.”
“He’s a private man. Keeps to himself quite a bit, bless him.” Judith answered.
As if on cue, Chris joins you and Judith in the kitchen, a frown marring his handsome face.
“She’s sleeping now.” Chris answered.
“What about her kidnapper? Did she remember...his name?” Nicky answered with shock. “We could look him up.”
He shakes his head sadly, sinking into the chair across from you.
“Nothing.” Chris answered sadly.
“This is all my fault. When she told me she was dating this guy, all I did was question her life choices.” Nicky answered sadly. “If I’d just been supportive, maybe she wouldn’t have-“
“No, Nicky. No part of this is your fault.” Chris answered with concern.
He takes your hand in his. Your heart clenches painfully...
Chris really is a sweetheart.
You lace your fingers through his. You breathe deeply, focusing on Chris’s warm, supportive presence.
“That’s very kind of you to say.” Nicky answered.
“I’m not being kind, Nicky, just honest.” Chris answered.
The tenderness in his blue eyes makes you own begin to water.
“Nicky...”Chris answered with concern.
He cups your cheek softly, wiping an errant tear away with his thumb. You let out a watery laugh.
“Thank you, Chris. I guess sometimes I forget that I can’t live Denise’s life for her.” Nicky answered.
“Lord, if that isn’t the truth.”Judith answered.
Judith pats Chris’s shoulder fondly. “All right, you two. Get on out of here and let my girl sleep.” Judith answered.
“Of course. Come on, Nicky. I’ll take you home.” Chris answered warmly.
Denise sleeping peacefully under a crocheted blanket on the couch as you file out of the kitchen. You feel a powerful urge to take her home with you so you can watch over her, but you tamp down.
She’ll recover faster in a familiar environment, Nicky. You know this.
You pull the blanket up to her chin and tuck it snugly around her.
“Please get better, Denise.” Nicky answered softly.
I can’t lose you,too.
Chris touches your shoulder softly.
“Ready to go?” Chris answered warmly.
His eyes look exhausted, and you feel a fresh pang of sympathy for him as you nod.
“As ready as I’ll ever be, I think.” Nicky answered.
“Judith will take good care of her, Nicky.” Chris answered.
“I know she will.”Nicky answered with a smile.
You follow him outside, praying that Judith’s care will be enough. Chris reaches the SUV first and opens your door for you. Despite your worries, you can’t help smiling.
Okay, no guy’s ever opened my car door for me.
“Why, Mr. Evans, I’m beginning to believe you may just be too good to be true.” Nicky answered with a smile.
Chris laughs, and your heart flutters as he takes your hand, helping you up into the SUV.
“I’m also beginning to suspect you consume as many historical romances as I do.” Nicky answered smiling.
Chris places a hand over his heart.
“You discovered my shameful secret!” Chris answered with his brow raised. “I’ve had a terrible crush on Lizzie Bennet from Pride and Prejudice. It’s consumed my life since I was a boy.”
“Nerd.” Nicky answered smiling.
“Says the woman with a Ph.D.” Chris answered smiling.
“Oh, shits fired!” Nicky answered laughing.
You both laugh together. Chris slides into the driver’s seat, and you’re off.
“So. Why didn’t you mention you knew Judith before?” Nicky answered.
Chris shrugs.
“It didn’t seems relevant at the time.” Chris answered.
“Fair enough.” Nicky answered. “How long have you known..Denise?”
“Two, almost three years? We met back when she applied for the Dreamseekers Foundation. She needed an apartment.” Chris answered. “I got her in contact, with Judith, and we’ve been friends ever since.”
“Wow. I had no idea.” Nicky answered.
It wasn’t just luck, then, that had gotten Denise’s life turned in the right direction. It was Chris.
Affection swells inside you.
“I can’t believe Denise never mentioned you. Well, no- I can believe it, actually.” Nicky answered. “Denise always been reserved. She’s never been super comfortable letting anyone know all the details of her life. Me included.”
“She’s not alone in that. We all have things we’d rather hide.”Chris answered.
There’s a melancholy note in his voice. You lean back in your seat, gazing out the window in contemplation.
“Now that I think of it, I’m pretty sure you’re the only person I’ve ever told about my sister. It’s funny, isn’t it? There are things you’ll tell a stranger that you’d never admit to a friend.” Nicky answered.
“Are we strangers?” Chris answered.
The question catches you off- guard. You consider it.
We’ve only known each other briefly, but... Chris is so easy to be around. I fell like I’ve known him forever.
“No. I guess we aren’t, are we?” Nicky answered.
“Then, are we friends?” Chris answered.
“I think we just might be.” Nicky answered smiling.
A dazzling smile lights Chris’s face, so genuine and open that you’re taken by surprise.
“That’s good.” Chris answered warmly.
You remember what Judith said about him keeping to himself.
It sounds like Chris doesn’t have many friends. He such a charming guy, I’d have expected him to be popular. But then, I’ve treated my fair share of lovely people who have trouble making friends.
“I’m glad to have you as a friend, then, Nicky.” Chris answered warmly.
“Right back at you.” Nicky answered with a smile.
You give his right hand a squeeze where it rests on his thigh.
“To hear Judith tell it, you make a pretty great one.” Nicky answered.
“Well, even Judith has her blind spots.” Chris answered.
His expression is playful, and yet...
There’s that hint of sadness again.
“...why do you say that?” Nicky answered.
“Hm?”Chris hummed.
“You just said Judith has a blind spot regarding you.” Nicky answered. “ you said it jokingly, but on some level, that’s how you really feel, isn’t it?”
Chris laughs. “Dr. Ransom, are you shrinking me?”
“ I am, aren’t I?” Nicky answered “...sorry, force of habit.”
“No, go ahead.” Chris answered with a smile. “Tell me about yourself.”
“Wait, you want me to whip off a psychological analysis of you?” Nicky answered with shock.
“Why not? Call it morbid curiosity.” Chris answered with a smile.
“Chris, that would be...way too awkward. I know you personally, not as patient.” Nicky answered. “I couldn’t possibly be objective.”
“Oh, come on.. Just for fun.” Chris answered. “Humor me.”
You mull it over for a moment.
“And you swear you’ll take it with a grain of salt?” Nicky answered.
“Cross my heart.” Chris answered.
You sigh, then consider him.
“You need to be in control. Not of other people, but of yourself and whatever situation you’re in.” Nicky answered. “When you aren’t, you find it uncomfortable, which I suspect is why you were so adamant about taking the lead on finding Denise. This is likely informed at least in part by resentment of your medical condition, which you can’t control.”
Chris’s mouth twitches, but he remains silent. You press on.
“You’re incredibly handsome, and you know it, but you spend your nights at a coffeehouse, so I don’t imagine you date much.” Nicky answered.
“Ah...no. I don’t.” Chris answered.
“Chris, do you want me to... stop?, I know you thought this would be fun, but if it’s making you uncomfortable...”Nicky answered.
Chris shakes his head.
“No, you’re fine. Please , go on.” Chris answered.
“You’re friendly-“ Nicky paused.
Chris chuckles.
“Let me finish!” Nicky answered with a smile. “You’re friendly, but you have more acquaintances and business associates than actual friends. And something tells me it’s possible you feel that’s all you deserve.”
An unreadable expression comes over Chris’s face.
However, he quickly exchanges it for a cavalier grin as he parks outside your house.
“I guess you have me all figured out, don’t you?” Chris answered.
He’s deflecting.
“..maybe a little. But there’s a lot more to uncover.” Nicky answered. “You’re a complicated man, Chris Evans. Though I must say, you do wear that sexy air of mystery well.”
“Really?”Chris answered.
He leans in, draping his arm over the back of your seat.
“Do you find me sexy,Dr. Ransom?”Chris answered with a raised brow.
His eyes sparkle with mischief. You remember your dreams, then. Each and every vivid detail. You shift in your seat, your skin suddenly feeling too tight for your body.
“Chris...yes, I think you’re sexy. You have...a certain appeal.” Nicky answered blushing.
“Do I,now?” Chris answered with a grin.
Your breath quickens as he leans closer. Your eyes drop to his lips. You redirect your gaze, but not quickly enough.
“Nicky...”Chris answered.
He runs his knuckles along your jaw.
“Chris...” Nicky answered blushing.
You part your lips, your eyes fluttering shut as he closes the distance between you...just as a car alarm wails, scaring you half to death. You spring away from Chris , who looks flustered as you feel.
“I, um. I should get inside.” Nicky answered blushing.
“Right. Of course.” Chris answered.
“Chris..I’m glad you helped me.” Nicky answered.
“I’m glad I could be of help,Nicky.” Chris answered.
You thank him for the ride and shoot out of the car, practically sprinting into the house.
Once inside, you fall back against the door, your cheeks blazing.
Yeah. This is going to be SUPER inconvenient.
You shake your head and walk into your home office.
All right, Nicky. Get it together. Your first patient will be here in an hour. Thankfully, that’s plenty of time to get a cold shower in...
When Judith calls at the end of your workday, it’s a welcome distraction.
“Judith! How’s Denise?” Nicky answered .
“Perking back up by the minute.” Judith answers. “She ate an entire pizza an hour ago! Now she’s sleeping it off.”
Tears of relief prickle behind your eyes.
My sister stopped eating..before she died. But Denise... Denise is going to be okay.
“Judith, you’re seriously my hero.” Nicky answered.
“Oh, I don’t know about all that, honey.” Judith answered.” I am glad she gave me your number, though. The Dreamseekers Foundation’s annual Halloween ball is right around the corner, and I’d love you to attend.”
“Oh! I’ve never been to a masquerade ball before, but I’d love to...get all dressed up. I never do anything fun on Halloween any, ore. A masquerade sounds amazing.” Nicky answered.
“Oh, it is. It’s spectacular every year.” Judith answers. “And it’ll be a perfect opportunity for you and Chris to spend more time together.”
Your pulse quickens.
Down, girl.
“He’ll be there?” Nicky answered.
“Oh, of course. He’s on the board, and he’s a trustee.” Judith answers. “And I know he’d just love to see you there.”
She gets your mailing address for the formal invitation, and you say goodbyes.
Apparently, I’m going to a ball.

Summary: Chris wants an official date with you. Will you say yes? And what happens during your newest dream with him?
Word count:over 1k
Warning ⚠️: 18+only smut,sex,group action,etc.
Characters: Dr.Nicky Ransom x Chris Evans , Denise Ames (cousin),Tim,Judith.
Chapter 10:
You wake in an unfamiliar room, and it takes you a moment to get your bearings.
Right. I fell asleep at Chris’s house. He must have put me to bed. It’s no surprise a house this size has a guest room.
You cast your eyes around the elegantly furnished room.
This is.. gorgeous. My interior design skills place in comparison!
Images from last nights dream flood your mind , and a fresh pang of arousal makes you gasp. You stare up at the ceiling, your body throbbing with frustrated desire.
I’m in Chris’s house. In Chris’s bed.
You slide a hand down your body, your skin tingling deliciously in its wake.
It wouldn’t be so wrong to give myself a little relief, would it? I should... pick up where my dream left off.
You slip your fingers between your legs, finding yourself slick and swollen.
That was a hell of a dream...
You close your eyes, remembering the feel of Chris’s mouth on you.
“Mmm...” Nicky moaned.
You circle your fingers faster, plucking at a nipple with your other hand.
So close...so close..
You piston two fingers inside yourself, then a third, imagining Chris’s hard cockiness their place.
“Oh!” Nicky squealed.
Climax surges through your body like an electrical current. Fully spent, you lay back against the pillows, panting.
And I’ll totally be thinking about that next time I see Chris. Great idea, self.
You slip out bed with a sigh. Your legs warble as you stand, your head swimming dizzily.
Ugh. Guess that’s what I get for staying up late. I’d do it all over again, though.
You look down at yourself and laugh.
And it’s no wonder my brain conjured a ball as I slept!
You straighten yourself up as a best you can, and you see a pair of shorts, and a man’s shirt laid out for you.
Chris is really thoughtful, huh.
After you change ,you head out into the hallway.
All right. Let’s see...
Doors lead off on either side of the hall. You try each in turn, revealing a series of rooms that look to have been rarely if ever used. You head back into the study.
We had a drink, we danced, I fell asleep, and he put me to bed. Nothing else happened between us last night. Certainly nothing sexual.
Your ears pick up the faint strains of music, and you follow it into an elegant parlor. Chris sits at a grand piano, his fingers moving gracefully over the keys. He looks up as you enter.
“Good morning.” Chris answered warmly.
“Good morning to you, too.” Nicky answered.
You watch him play for a moment.
“Wow, you’re .. very talented.” Nicky answered.
“Thank you.” Chris answered.
He chuckles, his fingers effortlessly gliding over the keys even as he speaks to you.
The song he’s playing sounds familiar.
“Apologies. I know classical music isn’t always everyone’s favorite.” Chris answered.
“No, it’s beautiful. You play so well.” Nicky answered.
“You’re too kind. Many don’t particularly appreciate this music nowadays.” Chris answered.
Chris smiles sadly as he plays.
Wait, the song is on the tip of my tongue.
“Well, Mozart is pretty palatable for anyone.” Nicky answered.
Chris smiles, his eyes alight with surprise and happiness.
“You know the piece?” Chris answered.
“Yeah. That’s his Sonata in B-flat major, right?” Nicky answered.
“It is.” Chris answered.
His lifting, hypnotic voice lets out a quiet chuckle.
“Very impressive.” Chris answered with a smile.
You feel your cheeks heat up at the compliment, but you smile back.
“Not as impressive as your playing.” Nicky answered.
“I take it you like classical music?” Chris answers.
“Doesn’t everyone?” Nicky answered. “So... who’s your favorite classical composer?”.
“Chopin. Definitely.” Chris answered.
Chris smiles, his eyes sparkling in the dim light. It’s the same smile Chris of you dream wore as he pushed your skirt up around your hips. Your pulse races.
“Ah. You slept well, I hope?” Chris answered.
“Um.”Nicky answered. Focus, Nicky! I have to...keep my cool.
You take a calming breath.
“I slept great. The bed was crazy comfortable.” Nicky answered. “Your guest room is beautiful, by the way.”
“Thank you. I’m glad you had a restful sleep.” Chris answered.
You have no idea.
“I did.” Nicky answered.
Chris nods.
“I’m glad. I’m afraid that room doesn’t see much use. And I’m sorry about your costume.” Chris answered. “I can’t imagine it was comfortable to sleep in, but I thought it best to- ah- leave it on you. I hope that was the right decision.”
An unwelcome tingle of arousal makes you shiver.
“Definitely the right decision.” Nicky answered.
Is the man trying to kill me?
You clear you throat , shaking the sexy thoughts from your mind.
“Sorry I just kind of ... fell asleep on you last night.” Nicky answered.
Chris laughs.
“You clearly have no head for drink.” Chris answered.
“It’s more a factor of usually being in bed well before midnight!” Nicky answered.
“Ah. I fear I can’t relate. I’ve always been a bit of an insomniac myself.” Chris answered.
“Have you spoken to your primary physician about that?” Nicky answered.
Chris arches an elegant brow.
“Right. None of my doctory beeswax.” Nicky answered.
“No. But I’m touched that you care.” Chris answered.
“I’m....glad you think so. Because I know it can be kind of annoying.”Nicky answered.
“It’s not.” Chris answered. “It’s nice having you here. I don’t usually have company in the mornings.”
Your eyes flick over to the heavy drapes blocking out the morning sun.
Poor Chris . I hate that I have to rush out on him.
“Thank you for having me, but...I should get going. It’s a workday for me. I need to get home and get ready for my appointments.” Nicky answered.
Chris raises from the piano.
“Won’t you stay just a bit longer?” Chris answered.
“Chris...”Nicky answered.
“Just a cup of coffee. What do you say?” Chris answered.
You go over your morning schedule in your head.
Coffee wouldn’t take long. I could spend a little more time with Chris and still get ready in time for work.
“I have time for coffee.” Nicky answered.
You let out a laugh of surprise as Chris pulls you into abrupt hug and then follow him into the kitchen.
The room is just as dim grey as it was before, but it seems less gloomy with Chris inside. He bypasses the coffee pot and pulls a French press out of an otherwise empty cabinet.
“You would be that bougie!” Nicky answered with a smile.
“A man needs to have standards.” Chris answered.
You drink your coffee slowly, talking about nothing in particular and enjoying each other’s company.
Is this what dating Chris would be like? Spending every morning with a sweet, gorgeous man who makes me fancy coffee? That doesn’t sound bad at all.
The time passes quickly, and soon you really do have to go.
You summon a ride, and Chris escorts you to the front door as the driver approaches.
“Thank you for spending the morning with me, Nicky.” Chris answered.
“We should do it again sometime.” Nicky answers.
You press a soft kiss to Chris’s cheek.
“Goodbye, Chris . I’ll see you around.” Nicky answers.
He takes your hand before you can open the door.
“Can we do it again?” Chris answered. “After spending last night chasing donations, I feel like I owe you a real date. Only if you’d be interested, of course. I wouldn’t want to presume-“.
“Chris... I’d love to go on a real date with you.” Nicky answered. “Later this week?”.
He smiles , and you feel a rush of lightheadedness that has nothing to do with your lack of sleep.
“That would be perfect.” Chris answered with a smile.
You reach for the door again,
“Wait!” Chris answered.
“Chris, I really have to-“ Nicky answered. The words are muffled as Chris presses his lips to yours. His kiss is chaste, but desire courses through your veins all the same. You wind you arms around his neck, kissing him fervently. His tongue plays at the seam of your lips, and you part them eagerly for him, greeting his tongue with your own.
“Mmm..”Nicky moaned.
He holds you close, his body flush against yours as he kisses you hungrily. You moan, content for the moment to stretch on forever... and jump as a horn blast communicates your ride’s impatience. You step out of Chris’s arms, your cheeks burning.
“You make it hard to leave, I’ll give you that.” Nicky answered.
“Then don’t leave.” Chris answered.
“I have to. See you soon?”Nicky answered.
Chris nods resignedly, and you give him one last kiss before slipping out the door.
After your final appointment that afternoon, a sudden burst of motivation carries you to your storage room.
This is where I’ve kept all of Clare’s things since she died. It hurts too much to look at them.
Now you unpack box after box, examining the priceless treasures within.
Clare’s sketchbooks. Her paintings . Her high school yearbooks....
You open a photo album to a shot of you, Clare, and Denise looking happy and carefree, and you smile wistfully.
If only .... I’d been old enough to help Clare. I didn’t understand at the time just how vulnerable she was. If I had , maybe I could have saved her from Adrian.
And you think of the man who ruined at all. Clare’s boyfriend . The love of her life, supposedly.
Adrian. His name was Adrian.
For a man you never met, Adrian has cast a long shadow over your life.
He took Clare from us, and he became my symbol for everything to avoid in life: dependency, need, lack of control... it’s why all my relationships have been so superficial. But now, with Chris...
Your cheeks warm as you remember the kiss this morning.
He’s not like anyone else I’ve ever met. Clare’s art should never have been gathering dust in here. It should be displayed all through the house to honor her memory.
You select a dozen canvases, and set them aside to take to a framer. Your phone vibrates with a text from Denise .
*text messages*
“Huge portrait exhibit at the museum this weekend! Wanna come with me and Tim?” Denise text.
“That sounds...fun.” Nicky text.
“I haven’t been to the museum in ages. Count me in.” Nicky text.
“YAAAAYY! Denise text.
“You should invite Chris, too. Art museums can be romantic..;). “ Denise text.
It sounds like Denise been spending too much time with Judith.
“You know what? That sounds like a great idea.” Nicky text.
*end of text messages*
You agree on a time and shoot a message to Chris.
It’s time to focus on the future.
A future that might just include a relationship with Chris Evans.
When you’re done with work on Friday, you feel utterly exhausted.
I’m excited to go to a museum with everyone..especially Chris.
That thought clings to you as drift off to sleep.
*dream sequence **
You’re in a museum, full of statues depicting knights in shining armor in battle.
I’m lucid dreaming again.
You walk up to one of the suits of armor.
“Hello there.” Nicky answered.
The knight tilts his head at you in acknowledgment.
“Oh, wow.” Nicky answered in shock.
Then, you notice all the knights shift to look at you.
“This is strange... but I’m not frightened.” Nicky answered.
“Is that wise.” Chris answered.
With a gasp, you whirl around to face the voice.
“Chris! What are you doing here? Our date isn’t until tomorrow.” Nicky answered in shock.
He steps closer to you and reaches out, stroking your cheek.
Then, everything shifts.
“A battlefield?”Nicky answered.
You turn around and see Chris dressed in knight’s clothing. Shadows of the knights close in on you, and Chris draws a sword.
“Give us the girl.” Knight answered.
“Never.” Chris answers.
Chris swings his sword and fights them off, moving smoothly and gracefully, almost like a dance.
“Chris! Watch out!” Nicky yelled.
He heads your warning, easily dodging around the knights. The battle stills, and Chris turns back to you.
“Are you frightened, Nicky?” Chris answered.
You barely need to think about the question.
“No.” Nicky answered. “I’m not afraid of you.”
He drops his sword and strides over to you. The defeated knights circle in, keeping their distance as they watch you both.
“You should be.” Chris answered.
Chris strokes your face with his hand, smearing mud across your cheek.
“Too bad for you.” Nicky answered.
He growls, wrapping an arm around your waist and hugging you close to his body. The force of it sends a thrill through you. Then, he claims your mouth in a heated, possessive kiss. You surrender to him easily, melting into his touch.
“Nicky...” Chris answered.
You feel the muddied ground on your feet, but you don’t care. You tug him closer, and he begins to lower you to the ground. Dirt and mud surround you as he claims your mouth with an animalistic want.
“The knights are still watching us.” Nicky answered.
“Does that bother you, Nicky?” Chris answered. “Does it bother you that I want to take you here, for all of them to see?”
“...yes.” Nicky answered blushing. “It... it does. It’s embarrassing.
Chris smiles fondly.
“Adorable.” Chris answered.
He pushes you further into the mud and you feel it cushion you, wet and filthy.
“I want you, Nicky.” Chris answered. “I want them all to see us.”
Desire courses through you, filling every inch of your body.
“What do you want, Nicky?” Chris answered.
You swallow, feeling the mud in hair, dirtying your clothes. The knights look on.
“Chris...I want you to fuck me here for all to see.” Nicky answered.
Chris growls, crashing his mouth to yours. You moan into him, and he takes advantage of your open mouth to plunge his tongue inside you. He explores your mouth like a man starved.
“Too many clothes..” Nicky answered.
He grunts and tears your clothes off as if they were made of paper. You gasp, your nipples hardening as they meet the cold air.
“C-Chris....” Nicky whispers.
“Are they watching, Nicky?” Chris answered.
You look to the side and see the knights are even closer than before, watching every move.
“Y-yes.” Nicky answered.
“Good.” Chris answered.
Chris takes his cock out and rubs it over your exposed, wet entrance.
“Oh, God.” Nicky squealed.
“So wet, Nicky.” Chris answered.
Then, without ceremony, he plunges into you. Groaning, he takes you roughly, his thrusts fast and hard as he pumps his cock in and out of you. Frantically, you move your hips to meet his hard thrusts, desperate for more friction.
“God, Nicky.” Chris answered
You moan, looking around to see the knights around you, their cocks hard in their trousers.
“They’re watching, Chris.” Nicky answered.
“I want them to see more of you.” Chris answered.
He pulls out of you and you whimper.
“I want you on your hands and knees, Nicky. I want them to see your face as I take you.” Chris answered.
“Chris...take me from behind.” Nicky answers.
Chris flips you over easily, exposing your ass to him. Mud is everywhere, wet and squelching. You look up, seeing the knights stroking their cocks as they watch.
“Look how beautiful you are, Nicky. They can’t help themselves.” Chris answered.
He pushes you into the mud so your ass is up in air, his thrusts just as merciless as before. Then he plunges into you again, and you scream in pleasure. The knights watch as they stroke themselves, faster and faster.
“Are you going to come, Nicky?”Chris answered.
“Y-yes. Oh, God, yes.” Nicky answered.
“Come, then.” Chris answered.
He thrusts harder, faster , until all you can do is scream his name.
“Chris...Chris!” Nicky answered.
And just like that, you come undone.
“Nicky....” Chris answered.
The knights around you all finished just as Chris comes inside you, spilling his hot seed everywhere. You collapse on the ground, and he lays himself on top of you. You’re both panting, exhausted and sated. You both lay there in the mud, filthy and sated.
“You did beautifully, Nicky.” Chris answered.
Chris kisses your neck gently, and you moan.
“You deserve to be treated like a princess after that.” Chris answered.”which is exactly what we’ll do.”
“What do you mean?” Nicky answered.
And just like that, the mud and dirty battleground disappear. You find yourself pristine, dressed like royalty.
“What?” Nicky answered in shock.
And then Chris appears, dressed like a gentleman.
“Hello, your highness.” Chris answered.
He gives you a bow, and then you see them. A second Chris, identically gorgeous.
“Are you ready to be treated like a princess?” Chris answered.

Note: I’m not sure if I missed a paragraph in the beginning of this part. Forgive me I was copying and pasting this so...I may lost a small section in the story I’m not sure.
Summary: when Nicky and Chris open up to each other a strange dream befalls her...
Word count: over 1k
Warning ⚠️: 18+ only ; smut, oral, sex.
Characters:Dr.Nicky Ransom x Chris Evans, Judith, Denise Ames (cousin), Tim
Chapter 9:
when you and Chris open up to each other strange dream befalls you . Stranger still is the desire that consumes you, and the sense of great danger. I think I’m ...falling for him. It’s early still, but I’m falling hard. It’s scary. But also kind of exciting.
The song ends. You stop dancing it remain in each other’s arms, each loathe to ruin the moment.
It’s so late, though. I should get going.
You open your mouth to say as much, but yawn comes out instead.
“Sorry. It’s way past my bedtime.” Nicky answered.
As if your body has suddenly remembered what time it is, you sway where you stand, and Chris guides you back into your chair.
“Maybe you should get some sleep.” Chris answered.
And as determined as you’d just been to head home, your body seems to want nothing more. You yawn again, struggling in vain to keep your eyes open.
“Mmm. Maybe. Just for a few minutes.” Nicky answered.
*dream sequence *
You’re vaguely aware of a blanket draped over you,and then you’re out.
You wake shortly to a beautiful room. You’re greeted at once by Judith,Denise, and Tim in their best formal attire.
“Nicky! Oh, we’d so hoped you could make it this evening!” Judith answered.
“We were terribly worried you wouldn’t be able to attend. Weren’t we,dearest?” Denise answered.
“Terribly worried. But here you are!” Tim answered.
“Forgive my lateness. I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.”Nicky answered.
I should remark upon..the beauty of the ballroom.
“I’ve never seen such a lovely ballroom.” Nicky answered.
“Isn’t it just divine?” Denise answered.
A hush false over the room as the crowd parts to admit a newcomer in a golden mask.
Your eyes meet, and he smiles. His progress across the polished floor is impeded by a guest in a garishly bright gown. You blush as he lifts your hand to his lips.
I should greet him...politely.
You bow your head graciously.
“Good evening, sir.” Nicky answered.
He looks pleased with you.
“Good evening, Miss Ransom. I believe I’ve been promised this dance.” Ball guest answered.
He inclines his head toward a small card attached to your wrist by a fine ribbon.
Upon each line is written the same name, it’s letters unintelligible. You frown.
“Is this...a prank?” Nicky answered in shock.
“Not at all.” Ball guest answered.
He takes your hand, leading you onto the dance floor. A girl calls out to you...
“Oh,Miss Ransom! Miss Ransom, don’t you know what he is?” Ball guest/ girl answered.
...but you pay her no mind as the gentleman pulls you into his arms.
“I fear you forget yourself, sir. This is far closer than decency permits.” Nicky answered.
“Then shall we be daring, Nicky, and fly in the face of convention?” Ball guest answered.
The familiar words strike a chord within you, and it’s as though a veil is lifted from your eyes.
“...Chris?” Nicky answered.
And, just like that, the mask from his face disappears. Realization dawns on you.
The ballroom dissolves, melting into Chris’s study.
It’s looks so real,but...I know I’m still dreaming. I know I am.
“Chris!” Nicky answered.
“You...recognize me? That’s impossible.” Chris answered in shock.
“No it isn’t! I’m obviously dreaming about you because...I just saw you.”Nicky answered. “I fell asleep while we were talking. It makes perfect sense! I’m just surprised you’re you this time and not some ethereal dream creature!”
“Wait,Nicky. You shouldn’t be able to-“ Chris answered in shock.
“Back to the ball!” Nicky answered.
You shift the dream back to the ballroom.
“This is seriously the coolest! Come on, Chris, dance with me!” Nicky answered.
“I-“ Chris answered.
You pull him into a waltz before he can finish.
“Ooh, I bet we could float if we wanted!” Nicky answered.
You focus your mind, and the two of you begin to levitate. You laugh out loud in victory.
“It’s nice to dream again.” Nicky answered.
And, possibly despite himself, your dream Chris laughs.
“You are a unique woman, Nicky Ransom.” Chris answered.
“And you don’t you forget it, you sexy figment of my imagination.” Nicky answered.
Hmm. The only thing that could make this moment better would be...make out with Chris while we’re dancing. I might not be gutsy enough to be so bold with the real Chris, but in my dream one? Where’s the harm?
You seize Chris’s face and pull him into a searing kiss. He seems momentarily stunned, but soon returns the kiss with gusto. You moan loudly as his tongue plunders your mouth.
“Chris...”Nicky answered softly.
You tug him closer, pressing your body fully against him. You feel him growing hard against you, and reach down to palm his erection.
“Nicky...”Chris answered softly.
You giggle, feeling elated.
“This is amazing.” Nicky answered.
You bring the pair of you down to the floor, where the rest of the guests look on, scandalized by your indecent display. A delicious thrill courses through you.
“Nicky. Come with me.” Chris answered.
He grabs your hand, pulling you into a dark hallway away from the crowd and into a nearby hall. In no time, he presses you against the wall, kissing you deeply.
Chris... well, kind of. But the real Chris never has to know.
“Oh, Nicky...”Chris answered softly.
You kiss him hard, pouring all your frustrated lust behind it. He moans.
“Nicky...”Chris answered.
He seizes you’re hand once more, tugging you into the fire lit study and locking the door. Your heart beats thunderously in your chest as he fixes blazing blue eyes upon you.
“Are you nervous,Nicky?” Chris answered softly.
“Why would I be? You wouldn’t harm me. Not in a million years. But I bet you’d like to do something else to me.” Nicky answered.
He kneels on the ground before you, grinning saucily as he hitches up your skirt. Your cheeks heat as he pushes your thighs apart.
“I’m hungry, Nicky. Won’t you have mercy on me?” Chris answered.
You spread your legs wider, arching an eyebrow.
“When you put it like that, how could a lady refuse?” Nicky answered.
He sighs delightedly, burying his face between your thighs. The slick strokes of his tongue spark fire in your veins.
“Oh!” Nicky squealed.
“Mmmh..”Chris answers.
You sink your fingers into his hair, rocking your hips against his face...and scowling when he brings you to the brink of orgasm twice, only to stop just shy of pushing you over the edge.
He’s a little willful for a figment of my imagination...
“Stop teasing me.” Nicky answered.
You tighten your grip on his hair and tug him on top of you, and vanishing the clothing between you with a thought.
“I don’t have all night, Chris.” Nicky answered.
He smirks , pulling you in for another searing hot kiss. Then you feel it. You feel like something is being pulled from you with every kiss, with every touch. It’s almost as if you feel tired.
“And what do you want,Nicky ?” Chris answered.
“I want...You. Inside me. Now.” Nicky answered.
“As you wish.” Chris answered.
You don’t need to tell him twice.
He pushes past you with ease, and begins pumping himself in and out of your wet center. He thrust into you and you gasp, your nails scrubbing at his shoulders for purchase.
“Chris...” Nicky answered softly.
“God,Nicky..” Chris answered.
You arch your hips to meet him, and as each thrust rocks your body, it feels as though so,etching innate is being drawn from you.
It’s so good.
“Don’t stop...”Nicky answers.
With each thrust, he takes you higher and higher. Until, finally, you come undone in his arms.
“Ah...” Nicky answers.
However, quick as lightning, you begin to feel tired again. Like your energy is being drawn from you.
“Nicky, I- “ Chris answered.
Chris still abruptly, a look of sadness coming across his face.
“I can’t do this.” Chris answered sadly.
You reach for him as he withdraws, but your fingers close on empty air.

Summary: Chris betrayed you..didn’t he? Nicky is determined to find out the truth. But can you handle the secrets of his past?
Word count: over 1-2k count
Warning ⚠️: 18+ adults only. No smut in this chapter. Dream sequence’s , paranormal. Mentioning of vampirism, etc.
Characters: Dr.Nicky Ransom x Chris Evans, Denise Ames (cousin to Nicky), Adrian (evil identical twin to Chris), Viscount Cloverdale (stepfather), Elizabeth (mother), Clare (Nicky’s dead sister)
Chapter 12:
A portrait of Chris stares up at you from the final page of Clare’s sketchbook.
“Oh no...”
Scrawled beneath it, confirming you’re worst suspicions, is a name: Adrian.
“What...what is Chris doing in my sister’s drawing? Unless.. Oh,God. Her boyfriend. The one who ruined her, the one who left her to take her own life.”
Nicky remember it as she see’s the name scrawled there.
“Clare’s love..his name was Adrian.”
It’s hard to breathe, and you don’t. Know what to do.
“Chris was...Chris was the one who killed my sister! He was her boyfriend.” That lying bastard! I’m so...pissed! How dare he? Is this some kind of sick game to him? The fucking nerve!”
Belatedly, another realization hits Nicky.
“Wait...Clare drew this 15 years ago, but this is exactly what Chris looks like today. But that’s impossible! Someone who looked his age 15 years ago would be middle-aged now, unless....unless he doesn’t age.”
Bile rises in her throat. She remembers The Nightmare. She remembers the vampires of her nightmares. She remembers the book she saw when she first entered Chris’s home. The word she saw.
“Incubus..”
“Fuck!” Nicky yelled.
A blur of seething, white-hot rage delivers her to Chris’s house just as sawn breaks.
She storm’s in, not sure what she intends to do- or even could do- but too furious to think that far ahead.
“Where the hell is he?”
She checks room to room, finally finding him sitting in a dimly lit room. He looks up as she enters, an expression of mild surprise on his face.
“Nicky?” Chris answered.
“This fucking guy.”
“It was you. All along, it was you.” Nicky yelled. “I can’t believe I trusted you!”
“Nicky, I don’t know what you’re-“ Chris answered confused.
“Save it, Chris!” Nicky yelled. “I know you were the one who killed Clare. God, you’re the one who took Denise, too, aren’t you? And then you made this big show of helping me find her so you could...what? What was your endgame?”
“Nicky, what are you talking about?” Chris answered in shock.
“Was this all some kind of twisted joke to you?” Nicky yelled. “Am I a joke to you?”
Chris rises from the floor. Nicky steps away as he moves closer.
“Nicky-“ Chris answered.
“Don’t. Every word out of your mouth has been a lie, and I won’t take it anymore, Chris! Or should I call you Adrian?” Nicky yelled.
Chris reels back as if you’d slapped him.
“Adrian?” Chris answered with surprise.
“That’s the name you used with Clare, isn’t it? My dead sister, who you recognized the second I showed you her picture?” Nicky yelled.
“Nicky,no. You have to believe-“ Chris answered still in shock.
“Do I? Maybe you’d like to explain this, then.” Nicky replied in angry.
Nicky thrust the sketch in his face. He takes it from her with wide eyes and trembling hands.
“No...oh, no....”Chris answered with sadness.
“Go on, then. Explain. I fucking dare you.” Nicky yelled. “And while you’re at it, maybe you’d care to explain...why you haven’t aged in 15 years. It’s because you don’t, do you? Because what you told me in my dream last night was true, wasn’t it? You’re not human.”
Chris blanches.
“What the hell are you?” Nicky answered.
He closes his eyes, his shoulders drooping as he lets out a heavy sigh. His eyes, when he reopens them, look exhausted.
“You..don’t have the details quite right, I’m afraid.” Chris sadly answered. “I never met Clare, and I didn’t visit your dreams last night.”
He lifts those tired eyes to meet her own.
“But I know who did. And no, we’re not human.” Chris sadly answered.
“We”? Nicky answered in shock.
Chris laughs humorlessly.
“Yes, Nicky. You guessed it before, didn’t you?” Chris answered. “As a matter of fact, I do have an identical twin.”
“He looks sincere, but he always does. I should... hear him out.”
“You have exactly one minute. Talk. Now.” Nicky answered angrily.
Chris visibly relaxes.
“Thank you, Nicky.” Chris answered warmly.
“Explain,Chris.” Nicky angrily answers.
He takes his fingers through his hair, looking agitated.
“Right. Right....” Chris replied.
He crosses to the antique armoire and returns with a sepia-toned photo.
“And this is?”Nicky replied.
“Proof.” Chris answered.
He hands her the photo, and she gasps.
“That’s me. And that’s my brother, Adrian.” Chris replied. “The picture was shortly before I saw him last. Over 120 years ago.”
She staggers backwards.
“No....” Nicky answered in shock.
“Nicky, I didn’t mean for you to find out like this.” Chris answered sadly.
“Did you mean for me to find out at all?”Nicky replied in shock. “When we’re you planning to tell me..that you’re not human? Didn’t you think that was information I could have used?”
“And I’d have dropped that into the conversation how, exactly? “By the way, I’m an immortal being?” Chris replied. “In what universe would you have believed me?”
He has her there. Her fury deflates, leaving a deep weariness in its wake.
“You’re right. I wouldn’t have believed you in a million years.” Nicky answered. “So, what are you, then, if not human?”
“That’s...a very good question.” Chris sadly replied.
He indicates for her to follow, and leads her into a library.
“Oh my God, are you going to show me..an ancient genealogical tome?” Nicky replied in shock. “Does it follow your bloodline for thousands of years?”
Chris raises an eyebrow. The he laughs.
“No. I just needed a drink.” Chris answered with a smile.
He pours himself a generous serving of brandy, then raises the bottle toward you.
“I... could definitely use a drink about now. It’s not every day you find out that...what,vampires are a thing?” Nicky replied.
“I’m not a vampire.” Chris answered.
He hands her a glass.
“Well...not exactly, anyway. I suppose vampirism is a decent analogy.” Chris replied.
He stands and walks to a bookshelf, taking out a familiar book.
“This best describes us.” Chris answered.
It was the same page that she saw when she first came to Chris’s home. Incubus: An immortal demon that feeds off the energy of sleeping women.
“It isn’t blood that sustains is, but energy.” Chris answers.
He frowns, tapping his fingers against his glass.
“You aren’t sleeping, but this...might work best if I show you. Give me your hand?” Chris replied. “It won’t hurt, I promise.”
Hesitantly, she places her hand in his. An odd, smoothing warmth comes over her, as though she’s been submerged in a hot bath.
“Oh!” Nicky replied.
He releases her hand.
“We can feed harmlessly, you see, by skimming off just what we need to survive.” Chris answered. “Adrian... was never overly concerned with that, though.”
“He takes too much.” Nicky answered.
Chris nods.
“And that’s what he did too...Clare? That’s why she was too broken to go on living?” Nicky replied.
“I’m afraid so,yes.” Chris answered sadly. “Once a human’s life force is depleted... there’s nothing to be done for them.”
She collapse into a chair, her mind reeling.
“I don’t...I’m so...” Nicky sadly answered.
Chris kneels before her, pulling her into a hug.
“I’m sorry, Nicky . I’m so sorry.” Chris sadly replied.
His arms are strong and warm, and she feels a small tremor in his muscles.
“You have to believe me when I say I never wanted to hurt you.” Chris replied.
He takes a long , shuddering breath.
“Does he really mean that?”
She falls into his arms, burying her face in his neck. He strokes her hair.
“I’m sorry, Nicky, I know this is...a lot to take in.” Chris answered. “And I know you must feel-“
“Like you’ve been lying to me since the moment we met? “ Nicky replied.
Chris sighs, his breath rustling through her hair.
“Yes. And I’m sorry about that, too.” Chris sadly replied. “But surely you can understand why I did.”
Slowly, she nods.
“You had no real choice in the matter. I know that.” Nicky answered. “But I still feel like I’m looking at a complete stranger.”
Chris flinches.
“Yes. I suppose you would.” Chris sadly answered. “Let me...explain from the beginning.”
He looks deeply into her eyes, and her kids grow heavy.
“Wh-what are you...?” Nicky replied confusingly.
“A change of venue, that’s all. Sleep.” Chris answered softly.
-somewhat dream sequence or vision-
She closes her eyes... and reopen them in a library nearly identical to the one she was just sitting in.
“Welcome,Nicky, to Cloverdale Hall. My childhood home.” Chris answered.
Chris sweeps back the curtains, and she gasps.
“Whoa...” Nicky replied in shock.
She gapes out the window at the sprawling green countryside.
“This is...incredible!” Nicky answered in awe. “We’re in your dream right now?”
“No. We’re in yours.” Chris replied. “My kind aren’t capable of dreaming. Of sleep at all, in fact. We can merely shape the dreams of humans. Somewhat imperfectly, I might add.”
He pulls a book off nearby shelf, flipping through the pages unintelligible print to demonstrate.
“But if this is my dream, then....” Nicky answered.
She takes the book from him and focus her mind.
“I want to...change it.”
The heavy leather-bound volume shifts into a modern paperback in her hands.
“Awesome!” Nicky replied smiling.
She glances down at the dress Chris put her in.
“And I think I’d rather wear something...normal.”
Her gown dissolves into a tailored blouse and pants. Chris frowns at the mundane modern attire.
“Really? With no limit but your own imagination, this is what you chose?” Chris answered.
“Business casual is my comfort zone.” Nicky answered blushing.
Chris’s smile turns wistful.
“Well. Come with me, then.” Chris replied.
Chris provides a brief historical background of Cloverdale Hall as he leads her down a dim hall...and up to a second hallway that seems to stretch on indefinitely.
“This is...spooky. Couldn’t he have chosen to deliver exposition somewhere less creepy? Wait...what’s that sounds?”
The cry sounds as Chris opens the first door, releasing an elegantly appointed bedroom. A beautiful woman lies in the enormous bed, her golden hair lank with sweat as she grits her teeth through a contraction.
“My mother, Elizabeth.” Chris replied.
“Oh...” Elizabeth answered.
A kind-looking man sits beside Elizabeth, holding her hand as the midwife mops a damp cloth over her forehead.
“Elizabeth, darling, you are so strong. I know you can do this.” The man answered.
“And her husband, Vicount Cloverdale. My stepfather.” Chris replied.
“Stepfather?” Nicky answered in shock.
“Yes. My mother was pregnant when they met. All I know of my biological father is that he was one of our kind.” Chris answered.
“You don’t even know.what he looked like?” Nicky answered.
“I assume he looked something like me.” Chris replied. “But no. My mother never spoke of him.”
Elizabeth lets out another wail.
Chris closes the door and continues down the hall. Shortly thereafter, a baby cries.
“I was Elizabeth’s firstborn, so Viscount Cloverdale named me his heir.” Chris answered.
He opens the next door, revealing a cozy candlelit room decorated in pastel colors. Two angelically beautiful boys sit at opposite sides of a low table, eyes glued to playing cards in their hands.
“Me...” Chris replied.
“Hmm...” young Chris answers.
“...and Adrian.” Chris replied.
“....”young Adrian responses with a smirk on his face.
“You...really are identical!” Nicky replied looking on. “ I couldn’t even begin to tell you apart! I’m so sorry I doubted you!”
“Apology accepted.” Chris replied.
“Hah! I win again!” Young Adrian squealed.
“Drat..” young Chris replied.
“Adrian, my love. Are you cheating?”Elizabeth answered.
Adrian gives his mother a cherubic smile.
“Of course not, Mama.” Young Adrian replied.
Elizabeth sighs, a frown marring her perfect face.
“Darling, you know how it grieves me when you lie.” Elizabeth sadly answered.
“I’m not lying! Chris, tell her! “ young Adrain replied.
The young Chris’s eyes flicker from Adrian to Elizabeth.
“I have no complaints,Mama.” Young Chris answered.
“You... covered for him.” Nicky replied looking on.
“I did. More often than I should have.” Chris replied. “More often than was good for him.”
Centuries removed, Elizabeth looks just as troubled as her adult son.
“Your loyalty does you credit, Chris, but you will not be able to protect your brother forever.” Elizabeth replied. “You must understand, my loves, that there are rules and laws that even our kind must obey to survive. To keep our sanity. If we cheat- if we a,way look for the easy way- we must pay the price in the end.”
“Boring!” Young Adrian replied angrily. “ I’m going to find Papa! He said he’d take me riding after sunset.”
Elizabeth shakes her head wearily as Adrain darts from the room. She strokes a fond hand over Chris’s hair.
“Go on, then. I know you want to join him.” Elizabeth replied.
The young Chris kisses his mother’s cheek and runs after his brother, and the adult Chris closes the door.
“The Viscount knew what you were, didn’t he?” Nicky answered.
“He did. Though for all intents and purposes, we were normal children apart from our sensitivity to sunlight.” Chris replied. “The need to consume human energy doesn’t develop until late adolescence.”
“This is wild. I want to ask him...how many of your kind are there?”
Chris shrugs helplessly.
“I only know of a handful of us. How many more there are, I can’t say.” Chris answered.
He leads her further down the hall.
“My mother didn’t know much about our kind, either, it’s possible we’ve always been rare.” Chris replied. “She’d heard a legend , though, that our kind could become human.”
“How?” Nicky answered.
“Ah, now that she was unclear on. But it was what she desired above all.” Chris replied.” She was fond of Viscount Cloverdale, and in time she grew resentful of the need to feed on him, however willingly he allowed it. And so, when Adrian and I were 14, she took matters into her own hands. She imprisoned herself in her room, and starved herself. It... ended poorly. She went mad with hunger. My stepfather, fearing for her life, broke her quarantine to check on her , and she drained him. My mother overcome with guilt. She ended her life the only way she knew how: by severing her spinal cord.”
He opens another door, and she gasps. She stares in horror at the guillotine looming above the bloodstained floor.
“Oh my God...poor Chris , having to see this as a child.”
She pulls Chris into her arms.
“I’m sorry, Chris.” Nicky answered. “ I had no idea you’d gone through...this.”
He hugs her back, burying his face in her hair.
“It’s all right. I endured.” Chris answered.
“But you shouldn’t have had to.” Nicky replied.
He pulls away with a heavy sigh.
“As a child? No. But as a man I fear Ive earned far worse.” Chris sadly answered.
Chris shuts the door and continues down the hall.
“Adrian and I carried on by ourselves for a time. But as we matured, we found that there was inadequate prey in Yorkshire to sustain two of our kind. We’re drawn to humans with especially strong life forces. Creative types, usually. Artists,writers,performers...” Chris replied.
“Like Denise. And Clare.” Nicky answered.
Chris nods solemnly, opening a door that provides a glimpse out of a window. Beyond the glass, Adrain saddles a horse as Chris looks on.
“Rather than compete for strong dreamers out in the countryside, Adrian left for London while I remained to run the estate.” Chris answered.
He closes the door as Adrian gallops off into the distance.
“And that was the last time you saw him?” Nicky answered.
“For a time, yes, though our paths would cross periodically through the decades.” Chris answered.
He comes to a final door, incongruously modern against the darkly paneled hallways, and pauses.
“What’s through here?” Nicky answered.
“Something for which I pray you can forgive me.” Chris replied sadly.
A terrible sense of foreboding fills you.
“Am I ready to see what’s beyond this door? Yes. Whatever it is, I can handle it.”
She turns the bright brass handle, revealing a familiar room.
“Is this...my room at the Marina Blanca Motel?” Nicky replied in shock.
......end of dream sequence...?

Summary: the Halloween masquerade ball is turning into something interesting...
Word count: over 1k
Characters: Dr.Nicky Ransom x Chris Evans ,Judith,Denise Ames (cousin), Tim (hot high school teacher/neighbor)
Warning ⚠️: 18+ adults only.
Chapter 7:
Between your patient load and spending every free moment monitoring Denise’s recovery, the next two weeks pass in a blur. In no time at all, Halloween is upon you. You look at your masquerade invitation again, nervous excitement bubbling up inside you.
I never expected to set foot in a place as fancy as the venue they booked, much less attend a ball there! I hope everyone there is.. super creative. Which mean I can’t show up in something uninspired. I need to look absolute best for this masquerade!
Though admittedly, the swanky venue isn’t your only motivation.
I haven’t seen Chris since we almost kissed the other week. The way he looked at me.. just thinking about it makes my skin tingle.
And you have been thinking about it. A lot.
I want Chris to see me in a costume that makes me look...like modern princess.
You slip into the gown and smile at yourself in the mirror. You turn this way and that, admiring the way you sparkle with each movement.
Perfect.
You grab your purse and head outside to meet your date.
“Happy Halloween,Nicky!” Tim answered.
“Happy Halloween,Tim!” Nicky answered.
Tim is your neighbor, and he’s had a crush on Denise for years.
What can I say? Judith inspired me to do some well- intentioned meddling of my own now that Denise is better. Time couldn’t buy his ticket fast enough once I told him Denise would be there!
“Let me guess. You’re ...The Dread Pirate Roberts?” Nicky answered.
“Aw, man he does have a similar costume, doesn’t he? No, I’m Zorro. “ Tim answers.
“Oh! I totally see it now.” Nicky answered.
You laugh, linking arms with Tim.
Soon, you’re at the Barbary Towers Hotel just as the bulk of the guest are arriving.
“This place is wild! I feel like I’m walking into “The Great Gatsby.” Tim answered with shock.
“Do I need to give you and the Gilded Age Hotel a moment alone? Nicky answered.
“No, I’ll be okay.” Tim answered laughing.
You and Tim enter the hotel and ascend a vast marble staircase. Your jaw goes slack as you step into the room.
I’ve never seen anything so glamorous in my life!
Then, you see him across the room.
Chris’s bright blue eyes pierce you even for a distance. It’s hard to even notice the crowd around you with him right there.
You expertly navigate the shallow stairs leading into the ballroom and step gracefully onto the brightly polished floor. Chris smirks at you in approval, and you feel yourself flush.
“I feel like I’ve stepped into a fairytale.” Nicky answered blushing.
A guest nearby hears you.
“It’s magnificent, isn’t it? Did you know these are all the original fixtures from 1901?” Party guest answers.
“Oh man really?” Tim answers in amazement.
You survey the gleaming ballroom with newfound wonder.
“So in a way, we really are stepping into the past.” Nicky answers.
“Exactly!” Party guest answered. “Pardon my enthusiasm. I’m a historian.”
“No explanation necessary. This place is amazing.” Nicky answered.
They grin at you before then making a beeline for a cluster of other guests nearby. You overhear him speak.
“I was just speaking to the most beautiful and elegant young woman. She’s quite extraordinary.” Party guest answered.
Is he talking about me?
Your eyes find Chris again. His eyes are still on you.
“Nicky!” Judith squeals.
Judith intercepts you, her voluminous gown, rustling across the floor.
“Judith... you look amazing!, Queen Elizabeth I, right?” Nicky answered.
“I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to be a queen for an evening!” Judith answers. “And you, Nicky! You look absolutely divine! I love this modern look on you. I dare say a certain someone won’t be able to keep his eyes off you.”
“Thank you.” Nicky answered.
Judith’s eyes land on Tim.
“And who is this handsome young man?” Judith answered.
“Judith, this is my neighbor Tim Reynolds. Tim, this is Judith Fortier. She’s Denise’s landlord.” Nicky answered. “Judith, Tim is...an English teacher. He works at the high school by my house.”
“Oh, isn’t that lovely . Good teachers really are worth their weight in gold.” Judith answers smiling.
“I believe the children are our future.” Tim answers.
“If you break into song right now, I’m pretending not to know you.” Nicky answers.
“Yeah, nothing to worry about there!” Tim answered smiling.
Denise bounds you to the three of you, smiling brightly.
“Nicky! Judith!” Denise squeals.
With keen eyes, flushed cheeks, and glossy hair,Denise is once again the picture of youthful good health.
I can’t believe how quickly she bounced back. It’s almost as though the last few weeks never happened.
“And Tim! I didn’t know you’d be here! Are you Zorro? Denise answered.
“Good eye! And you’re female Robin Hood?” Tim answered smiling.
“You’re the only person who’s guessed right!” Denise answered smiling.
“Well, Ms. Hood , shall we rob from the rich and give to the poor?” Tim answered with a grin.
“Or we could just dance.” Denise answered with a smile.
They walk off arm in arm, leaving you gaping in disbelief.
Wow. That was a a lot easier than I thought.
“You knew exactly what you were doing, didn’t you, you sly little fox?” Judith answered with a smirk.
“I....learned from the best. You’re inspiration to would-be matchmakers everywhere.” Nicky answered.
Judith throws her head back and laughs.
“Just doing my part, honey!” Judith answered smiling.
Seeing Denise so healthy and carefree makes you feel lighter than you have in weeks.
“This is shaping up to be a good night, Judith.” Nicky answered smiling.
“Come on! Let’s work the room a little.” Judith answers.
Judith takes your hand and leads you around the ballroom. Within 20 minutes, she’s introduced you to a wide array of donors, artists, and other members of the Dreamseekers Foundation.
Gorgeous ballroom, great catering, and Denise totally hitting if off with a good guy? Can a night get any better?
It can, you realize with a jolt.
But where did Chris go?
You crane your neck, trying to catch a glimpse of his tall, lean figure amid the sea of bright costumes.
“Looking for someone?” Judith answers.
“Yeah, where’s...Chris? I was expecting to see him.” Nicky answered.
“I got here fashionably late, I’m afraid.” Chris answers.
“Chris!” Nicky answered in shock.
“Oh, and would you listen to that! I swear I hear someone calling my name.” Judith answers pretending to be surprised.
She winks at you before melting into the crowd.
Subtle.
You turn back to Chris and you feel yourself flush.
No one man should be allowed to be that handsome.
“I didn’t know you’d be here tonight.” Chris answered.
“Judith invited me. I don’t usually attend things like this.” Nicky answered.
“Did she mention I’d be here?” Chris answered with a raise brow.
“She did.” Nicky answered blushing.
“Hm.” Chris answered.
Chris steps closer to you, a charming smirk on his face.
“And why did you decide to attend this particular event, Nicky?” Chris answered.
You shallow as he draws nearer. Something about him is so intoxicating tonight.
“Chris, I came tonight....to see you.” Nicky answered blushing. I know it’s silly, since we barely know each other. But I’ve missed you.”
He gives you a smile that makes your heart race.
“I’ve missed you, too.” Chris answered. “And thank you for all the updates on Denise’s recovery. I’m touched that you thought of me.”
“Well, I figured she wasn’t going to do it.” Nicky answered.
“You figured correctly! After the third “I’m fine,” I learned to stop asking.” Chris answered.
“She likes her independence that one.” Nicky answered “ thank you again for...everything.”
“The feeling is mutual.” Chris answered.
He gives your hand a squeeze.
“You look .... absolutely stunning.” Chris answered.
“Thank you.” Nicky answered.
You blush, almost giddy with happiness as the band strikes up a waltz.
“And you look...handsome.” Nicky answered.
“Thank you.” Chris answered with a smile.
Chris smiles, holding out his hand to you.
“May I have this dance, Nicky?” Chris answered.
“Chris... I’d be delighted.” Nicky answered.
You take his hand and he leads you onto the dance floor. Your heart flutters as he positions himself with one arm around your waist and the opposite hand in yours.
“Full disclosure: I have no idea how to waltz.” Nicky answers blushing.
“Just follow my lead.” Chris answered.
He guides you into a surprisingly simple step pattern, quietly counting out the steps for you as he leads.
“One...two..three. One...two...three...” Chris answered.
I still feel so stiff and awkward, but Chris? He’s so light on his feet, like he’s been dancing forever.
“You know how to waltz? When did you learn?” Nicky answers.
“As a boy. My mother insisted.” Chris answers.
“Not the extracurricular most parents stress nowadays.” Nicky answered.
“Ah, well. She was a little old- fashioned.” Chris answered.
You laugh as he twirls you.
“You seem to take after her in that way.” Nicky answered with smile.
“Yes. I guess I do. She always...”Chris answered.
Something odd flickers in his blue eyes. He trails off and shakes his head.
“She was always what?” Nicky answered.
“Never mind. I don’t want to waste your time with my reminiscing.” Chris answers sadly.
You look into his bright blue eyes, noticing a hint of openness and vulnerability that isn’t usually there.
“Chris...you could never bore me. I want to know more about you.” Nicky answers.
“You do.” Chris answered.
“I do.” Nicky answered.
You feel his grip on your waist tighten a fraction as you glide around the dance floor.
“You’re far too generous,Nicky.” Chris answered warmly.
“I’m not. If anything, I’m selfish.” Nicky answered smiling. You’re an amazing man, Chris. I want to get to know you better. So, why don’t you tell me about your mother, if you want. You said, “she always...”?
He shakes his head in disbelief, but the smile on his face is genuine.
“You continue to amaze me, Nicky. “ Chris answered. “I meant to say that she always has us practice dancing, even though we hated it. We much preferred playing outside or even reading to dancing.”
“We?” Nicky answered.
For a fraction of a moment, Chris freezes, his steps faltering for a breath before he continues to lead you.
“Ah. My brother and I.” Chris answered.
“You have a brother?” Nicky answered with shock.
Grief flashes across Chris’s eyes.
“As I said when we first met, Nicky. Amy family I have is dead.” Chris answered sadly.
“Oh. Chris .... I’m sorry.” Nicky answered sadly. “I didn’t mean to overstep.”
“You didn’t. Don’t worry.” Chris answered. “Still want to know about me?”
“More than ever, honestly.” Nicky answered.
He smile softens. Then, his eyes glint mischievously.
“You know, at the time our costumes were in fashion, the waltz was considered a scandalous dance.” Chris answered with a smile.
“Chris...are you coming on to me?” Nicky answered. “Because that sounded like coming on to me.”
Chris laughs. Then, the music stops, and he gives you a deep bow. Then, another song comes on, darker and more mysterious.
“Care for another dance, Nicky?” Chris answered. “I can teach you more about the more...salacious points of the waltz.” Chris answered with a smirk. “What do you say?”
“Teach me everything you know.” Nicky answered.
Chris smirks wide and pulls you flush against him as he begins to lead you in the dance once more.
“You see, at the time, couple’s dances were still very new thing. A gentlemen had to take a great care to keep his partner at a respectable distance.”
You flush, acutely aware of the warm press of his body against yours.
“I notice you don’t seem to be trying very hard on that front.” Nicky answered.
“Nor are you resisting me as a lady should.” Chris answered.
“I... can’t help it.” Nicky answered blushing. “You’re too irresistible, I guess.”
His grip tightens around you, strong and almost possessive.
“Shall we be daring, Nicky , and fly in the face of convention?” Chris answered with a smile.
“Who needs propriety?” Nicky answers.
“My thoughts exactly.” Chris answered.
He holds you closer, his body flush against you.
Best. Halloween. Ever.
A big, goofy grin creeps onto your face, and you lay your head against his chest to hide it. The shift in position seems no deterrent to Chris, who continues to lead you gracefully across the floor.
I could stay like this all night.
But all too soon the song ends, and with it your dance. You mourn Chris’s warmth as he steps away.
“Thank you, Nicky.” Chris answered.
He presses a soft kiss on your cheek. Just as he looks about to say something else, you feel a tap on your shoulder. You turn around to see...
“Mind if I cut in?” Mystery guest answered.

Summary: Nicky and Chris finally find Denise . But something is not right with Denise ...
Word count: over 1k
Warning ⚠️: 18 + adult only
Characters: Dr.Nicky Ransom (female reader) x Chris Evans, Judith (landlord), Denise Ames (cousin).
Chapter 5:
“She’s alive? Oh, I’m.... So relieved I could cry!, I- I thought she was... I thought the worst and...” Nicky answered. You sag against the door jamb as relief floods your body. Then, before you can even help it, tears sting your eyes.
“Nicky? Are you okay? Chris answered with concern.
“Y-yes. I’m just- I’m so relieved.” Nicky answered. A sob wracks your body.
Chris steps forward, reaching his arms out to you.
“Hey, it’s okay.” Chris answered with concern.
Gently, he pulls you into his warm, strong arms. “Everything’s going to be okay. You’re fine.” Chris answered.
He’s being so sweet. You feel his warmth, and you find yourself sinking into him. He holds you close to him.
“Oh, thank God!, when did she get back? Is she okay?”,Nicky answered surprised.
Chris rubs your back soothingly.
“She’s not hurt.” Chris answered warmly. “It seems she returned very early this morning. I called the front desk to ask when she checked out, but apparently she didn’t.”
“I guess we’re pretty lousy at surveillance, huh?”,Nicky answered with a smile.
He chuckles, giving you one last squeeze.
“We’re not exactly P.I. material, no.” Chris answered laughing.
Belatedly, you notice Chris’s attire. His sleeves are rolled all the way down and he’s wearing gloves.
“Is it really that cold out?” Nicky said.
“Ah. No, it isn’t...for most people.”Chris answered awkwardly. “I have a condition that causes extreme sensitive to sunlight.”
“Oh. That’s....surprising.” Nicky answered.
Chris looks so healthy! But then, so have some of my most severely ill patients.
“I guess we never do know what other people are struggling with, do we?”,Nicky answered.
“Now you know the window to it isn’t just to make the SUV look cool.” Chris answered warmly.
He shifts uncomfortably, belying his lighthearted tone.
It’s hard being vulnerable, particularly when that vulnerability is something you have no control over. I want to support him.
You give Chris’s hand a reassuring squeeze.
“It must be frustrating, living with such strict limitations. But we’re more than just the sum of our parts. Our limitations don’t define us unless we allow them to.”Nicky answered.
“I bet you say that to all the guys with weird medical conditions.”Chris answered.
“Some variation of it, yes.” Nicky answered with a smile.
Chris’s teasing grin softens. He give your hand an answering squeeze.
“They’re lucky to have a therapist as caring as you.” Chris answered with a smile. “ I mean it.”
Your heart flutters.
“I do what I can.” Nicky answered with a smile. “And if it makes you feel any better, I confess to being a grown woman with a crippling fear of the dark.”
Chris feigns shock. “No!” Chris answered.
“Yes! I...have to sleep with a night light. I’m up all night imagining monsters lurking in every corner if I don’t have one!” Nicky answered blushing. “It’s stupid, I know.”
“Not at all. Everyone has things they’re afraid of.”Chris answered warmly.
A memory of the dark mine in a deep wood tugs at your mind. You shake it off.
“Anyway. Now we’re even. Let’s go.”Nicky answered.
You and Chris arrive at Denise’s apartment by late morning.
You give the door a firm knock, and it opens to reveal someone.
“Oh!”, Judith answers.
It’s Denise’s landlord, Judith.
“Judith, what-“ Nicky answered with shock.
Then, your heart nearly burst when you see your cousin sitting on the couch , alive.
“Denise!” Nicky screamed.
You race to her side, pulling her into a fierce hug.
“Nicky...” Denise answered.
She’s buries her tear- stained face in your neck, sniffling pitifully.
“Oh, Denise...”Nicky answered. I was afraid I’d never see Denise again! I should...comfort her.
You rock Denise back and forth, letting her sob into your shirt.
“I was so scared, Nicky. I don’t even know what happened...I know you must have been so worried and I’m so s-s-sorry!” Denise answered sadly.
“Don’t worry about that, baby girl. You’re home now. Everything’s gonna be okay.” Nicky answered warmly.
“You listen to Nicky, honey. Nobody is upset with you.” Judith answered.
“We’re just glad you’re safe.” Chris answered.
Denise cries harder. You hold her as her sobs fade into hiccups, thanking every god you can think of that she’s alive.
“Thanks for taking such good care of her, Judith.” Nicky answered.
“You have always been indispensable.” Chris answered.
“Wait, you two know each other?” Nicky answered with shock.
“Of course. I was the one who told him Denise was back, after all.” Judith answered.
“But.. how? Nicky answered.
“Simple.”Chris answered.
“I volunteer for the Dreamseekers Foundation with Chris. He and I interact quite a bit.” Judith answered.
“Oh.” Nicky answered still shock.
I guess that checks out.
But you shake your head, turning back to your cousin.
“Denise...I know it’s going to be hard, but I need you to tell us as much as you can about what happened to you this past week.” Nicky answered.
Denise’s tired eyes go as wide as saucers.
“A week? No, I- I couldn’t have been gone more than a day or two.” Denise answered with shock.
“It’s been a week, honey.” Judith answered.
“Think, Denise. What do you remember?” Chris answered.
“Do you remember...sending this postcard.” Nicky answered. You hand her the postcard, watching for a spark of recognition. None comes.
“No. I’ve never seen this before.” Denise answered.
“And the quote?” Nicky answered.
Denise shrugs helplessly, shaking her head.
“I don’t understand.” Denise answered.
She buries her face in her hands.
“I can’t remember. I don’t know where I went , what I did- I’m not back on drugs, Nicky. You have to believe me!” Denise answered.
“Denise...I believe you.” Nicky answered. You squeeze her hands. “I know, Denise. You worked hard to get clean, and I’m so proud of you. You’re an extremely strong woman.”
“I didn’t relapse.” Denise answered.
“I know that. But something clearly did happen, and we need to figure out what it was.” Nicky answered.
Denise let’s out a deep breath, burying her face in her hands.
“I remember...I remember....” Denise answered. She grimaces, as if reaching for the memories pains her. “I remember...meeting a guy. A hot guy. I remember...”.
She turns a bright pink, and it’s not hard to guess why she’s remembering.
Chris and Judith, carefully feigning ignorance, seem to have drawn the same conclusion.
“I remember being at the beach. And a car. A red car.” Denise answered.
“What about the guy’s...name? Do you remember?” Nicky answered. “Even just his first name.”
Denise screws up her face. She let’s out a wail of frustration.
“No. I don’t remember anything.” Denise yelled. “But how? How do I not know?”
Chris kneels in front of her. He takes her hand gently.
“Think, Denise. Is there anything else?” Chris answered.
Denise sighs heavily. She shakes her head.
“I’m sorry, guys. After the art show, it’s just... jumbled.” Denise answers.
She turns her watery eyes towards you.
“Nicky, what’s happening to me?” Denise answered sadly.
“I don’t know, Denise. But... we’re going to find out.” Nicky answered. “No matter what it takes.”
Denise sets her jaw. She nods. Then she yawns.
“Oh, honey, you must be exhausted!” Judith answers.
And understand-statement if ever you’ve heard one.
Denise looks like she hasn’t slept in weeks. How is that even possible ?
“That’s enough, now, you two. She needs some rest.” Judith answers.
“Judith... You’re right. We should go.” Nicky answered.
Chris is undeterred.
“I know you’re tired, Denise, but I need you to focus.” Chris answered with concern. “The man. Can you tell us anything else about him?”
I know he’s only pushing because he cares, but Denise is totally wiped. This isn’t productive...
You place a hand on his forearm.
“Chris... give her time.” Nicky answered. “She just went through a pretty harrowing ordeal. Her brain may be repressing those memories for a reason. All we can do is wait.”
Chris shakes his head. He looks into Denise’s eyes almost desperately.
“Please, Denise. Anything at all? Even the smallest detail.” Chris answered.
Denise takes her fingers through her disheveled hair. She takes a long, shaky breath.
“He...” Denise answered. She frowns thoughtfully. “His voice. There something about it. I felt...compelled by it. “
“A compelling voice? You mean like...Dracula?” Nicky answered.
Denise’s eyes widen. “Oh my God! Exactly like Dracula.” Denise answered in shock. “I couldn’t break the compulsion. I felt like I needed to do what he said.”
She blanches in horror. “What if he made me do something horrible?” Denise answered. “What if he made me hurt or someone, or- or kill someone?”
“Then it would not be your fault. Whatever happened, Denise, you are blameless.” Chris answered.
Chris is a good friend. I’m glad Denise has someone like him in her life.
Your heart does a funny somersault. I’m glad we both do.
“Chris... Thank you for all that you’ve done for us.” Nicky answered.
“All I’ve done?” Chris answered confused. He smiles ruefully.
“I’ve hardly done anything. Nicky” Chris answered.
“You’re wrong. You’ve been so supportive, and and you’re so caring and helpful, and...” Nicky answered. You trail off, clearing your throat.
“Just- thank you.” Nicky answered with a smile.
“I hardly deserve that thank you, but...you’re welcome, Nicky.” Chris answered with a smile.
His blue eyes sparkle with affection as he looks at you.
“Denise is lucky to have someone like you here for her.” Chris answered.
“She’s lucky to have you.” Nicky answered.
“I’m lucky to have both of you. Now stop before you make me cry.” Denise laughed.
The three of you laugh. You lay a ah d on his shoulder .
“Chris. I think we should let her rest now.”Nicky answered.
He looks up at you pleadingly, covering your hand with his.
“A few minutes more,Nicky. That’s all I ask.” Chris answered with concern.
“It’s okay, Nicky. I’m okay.” Denise answered.
“You’re sure?” Nicky answered.
“I’m sure.” Denise answered.
You give Chris’s shoulder a squeeze.
“All right. It’s her call.” Nicky answered.
“I’m going to make you some tea, Denise, honey.” Judith answered.
Judith catches your eye.
“Nicky, would you come help me in the kitchen, please?” Judith asked.
“... of course.” Nicky answered. “Anything you need.”
You follow her into the kitchen. She putters around a bit, putting the kettle on and digging some tea out of the cabinet. Then...
“She’ll be okay”. Judith answered. “Won’t she?”
You want to say “yes,” but... Denise looks so much like my sister did right before she died.
You sink into the chair with a sigh.
“I hope so.” Nicky answered. “Memory loss isn’t uncommon, especially after trauma, but it’s not my area of expertise, either. I’ll make Denise an appointment with a specialist as soon as she’s feeling better.”
“Good”. Judith answered. She pats your shoulder. “We’ll have her sorted out in no time. You’ll see.”
Her smile turns sly. “Now, about you and Chris...”

Summary: Dr.Nicky Ransom still searching for her cousin Denise Ames, along the way this mystery man she’s got herself into...
Word count: over 1,000 ..I think lol
Warning ⚠️: 18+ only, smut,dreams,etc.
Characters: Dr.Nicky Ransom(female reader)x Chris Evans
Chapter3:
I have to get out of here.
A human skull grins gruesomely up at you from the cave floor.
“Oh my God! Nicky shrieks.
Chris turns , his eyes wide as he see you. “Nicky?”
The shock of everything is too much. You let out a brief yell of fear. You lurch backward.
“Oh my God.. “ Nicky shrieked again.
“Nicky, stop.” Chris catches you, pinning you to his chest before you can run.
How did he get here to me so fast? He was on the other side of the cave.
Your body slackens in defeat.
It’s over...
“Really, Nicky? You think a strange man may have hurt your cousin...so you follow into an abandoned mine in the middle of nowhere, miles away from any cell reception?”Chris answered angrily.
“Let me go! Nicky yelling scared.
“This mineshaft is unstable, Nicky! You could bring the whole thing down on us if you panic! Chris yelled angrily.
Chris... What’s going on?, what are you doing here? Whose skull is that? Nicky answered ,confused. “ what is this place?
“Somewhere no mortal should ever have ventured... Chris answered with a stern look.
“That is the weirdest answer! Nicky spoke with shockingly and confusion.
“I- okay, fair enough.” He sighs, his strong arms loosening on you just slightly. “All right, Nicky. I’m going to let you go, but I need you too promise me you’ll remain calm. No sudden movements. These support beams are over a hundred years old. It isn’t safe in here.”
“Okay, I promise. Nicky answered. Chris releases his hold on you...and you sprint for the mouth of the cave, your ankle throbbing in protest.
“Nicky, no!”Chris yelled.
You stumble over a piece of debris, bracing your hand on a support beam to catch your fall. You only touch the rotting wood for a second. But a second is all it takes. The beam splits clean in half.
“Ahh!”Nicky screamed.
Bits of rock and splintered wood rain down as the mineshaft collapses around you.
“Nicky! Look out! “Chris yelled.
Chris shoves you out of the way as a large section of tunnel crashes down on top of him.
Oh, God. Chris! He just got crushed.
“Chris! Say something! Anything”...Nicky yelled.
A dry cough rises from the debris.
“Chris!”, Nicky screams.
Nicky? Are you hurt? Chris asked warmly.
“No. No, I’m fine. But you just got crushed! It’s a miracle you’re alive. Are you okay?”Nicky answered with concern.
“I’ve been better.” Chris answered with slight smile. He coughs again, and you begin to panic.
He... he just saved my life. It’s my fault that this happened. Now he’s hurt and we’re trapped.
“Oh, Chris... I’m sorry. This is all my fault. I should have listened to you, but I panicked. I could have gotten us both killed.” Nicky sobbingly answered.
Nicky slump, feeling her shoulders hunch in defeat.
“Nicky, it’s okay.” Chris’s voice strangely calm despite the situation. “I’m just glad you’re all right. That was a close call, hm?”.
“You should be furious! I literally caused a mine to collapse. And I followed you in here like an idiot. All you’ve done since we met was act kind and offer to help me.” Nicky answered sadly.
It’s not your fault. I shouldn’t have frightened you. I... handled the situation badly.” Chris answered calmly.
“Well....it happens to the best of us. Are you hurt? “Nicky answered worried.
He shifts slightly under the rubble and winces.
“My left arm is broken. Right leg...might be. A few ribs are cracked, too, from the feel of it.” Chris answered in slight pain.
“How are you so calm about all that? Nicky answered with a worried look.
“Would panicking improve my situation? “Chris answered.
“No. I guess it wouldn’t. But maybe I can! Nicky answered. You clear away as much of the debris trapping Chris as you can, but.... “Damn it!, If I love these last pieces, it may cause another cave-in.”
“Okay. So, what you need to do now is go for help.” Chris answered.
“What? I can’t just leave you here!” Nicky answered freaking out.
“You’re going to have to, Nicky. It’s the only way.” Chris answered.
He’s right. He’s totally pinned and I can’t free him alone, not without risking both our lives again.
“All right. I’ll find a way out and call 9-1-1 the second I have a signal again. I’ll bring the EMTs back for you.” Nicky answered with concern.
Damn, I dropped my flashlight in all the commotion.
Nicky finds the flashlight amid a pile of human bones.
I guess this is who the skull belongs to...
“Hang in there, Chris . I’ll be back before you know it.” Nicky answered.
But the severity of the collapse means your rescue mission is over before it has a chance to begin.
“It’s no use. There’s no way out.” Nicky answered sadly.
“That’s... not ideal.” Chris answered.
You sink down onto the ground next to Chris. “I don’t know how we’re going to get out of this.” Nicky answered sadly.
“I don’t either. But we’ll worry about that in the morning. For now, you should try to get some sleep.”Chris answered.
“Sleep? But this cave is....creepy! Who knows what wild animals might be living in here? Plus, it’s... dark.”Nicky answered shockingly.
“You’re afraid of the dark?” Chris answered with a smirk.
“I know it’s stupid.” Nicky answered.
“It isn’t stupid at all. Everyone has things they’re afraid of. What matters is how we deal with the things that frighten us.”Chris answered.
You lean back, supporting your weight on your hands. Your hand brushes Chris’s.
I can’t believe he risked his life for me. I should thank him for saving my life.
You interlace you’re fingers with his.
“Thank you. For saving my life. I’m sorry I got you into this.”Nicky spoken softly.
Chris squeezes your hand warmly. “I’ve...well, no, I can’t honestly say I’ve had worse. But for what it’s worth, Dr. Nicky Ransom, I cant think of anyone I’d rather be trapped in a collapsed mine with.” Chris answered warmly.
“Oh yeah? Not even someone strong enough to get you both out of here?” Nicky answered.
“Oh, obviously I’d prefer to be stuck with that person. I didn’t realize that was an option.” Chris answered.
Despite the situation, you burst into giggles. You stroke your thumb softly over his knuckles.
“I’m glad I’m in here with you, too. But let’s remember to bring Superman with us the next time we go spelunking.” Nicky answered.
Chris smiles wryly. “Not to make this all about me, but I hope this is adequate cause to take me off your suspect list. I would never dream of hurting you or Denise, Nicky. Never.” Chris answered warmly.
“That’s not what we need to be thinking about right now, Chris. Nicky answered.
“But it’s what I’m thinking about. Please, Nicky. I need you to believe me. Chris answered.
“I...believe you. I really do. I’m sorry it took me so long.” Nicky answered.
Chris nods solemnly. “Get some sleep, Nicky.” Chris answered.
As if on cue, your eyelids grow heavy. You stifle a yawn. Chris holds out his free arm.
“Here , we’ll stay warmer if we lie close together.” Chris answered warmly.
I am really feeling the cold now that the adrenaline’s starting to wear off. And Chris must be In so much pain. He could use any physical comfort I can provide right now. I think I’ll.... get close to him.
You snuggle up to Chris as best you can, and he wraps his arm around you.
“Don’t get any ideas, mister.” Nicky answered.
“I couldn’t act on them even if I did.” Chris answered warmly.
You bury your nose in his neck, inhaling his warm, comforting scent. You’re getting sleepier by the second.
I shouldn’t be getting this tired this fast. What’s...what’s happening?
You yawn widely.
“Sleep, Nicky.” Chris answered.
You feel him press a soft kiss to the top of your head, and you feel strangely warm, like a strange spell has fallen over you.
“Everything will be better in the morning.” Chris answered.
Yes. Yes, everything will be better in the morning...
You drift off to sleep, snug against Chris’s warm body.
You wake alone and naked in the dark.
“Chris!, Where are you? “ Nicky answered in shock.
The echo of you own voice is the only response. Then it dawns on you...
I’m dreaming. This isn’t real. But...it feels so real. How am I so aware?
Just how aware am I in this dream? Maybe I can....see in the dark.
You wish for the light, and suddenly, just like that...
Oh. I’m lucid dreaming. Wow.
You move through the cave, trying to find a way out.
I think I see the exit up ahead. But...wait. Something’s out there.
You can’t see the predators outside the cave, but you sense them. You hear their faint footfalls. You smell their rank breath.
They’re waiting for me. If I set foot outside, I wrong be safe. But if I stay here, I’ll. Be trapped forever. I know it. Am I brave enough to face what’s outside? Yes. I’m sick of hiding.
You tell yourself and step outside the cave...only to find yourself falling.
“Ahh!” Nicky screamed.
You plummet downwards screaming in terror. A gaping void rushes up to meet you.
Wait, this my dream! Maybe I can control it! I’m going to.. fly!
You spread your arms and soar!
This is amazing!
Suddenly you’re in a beautiful open field, watching everything around below
I wonder if I can fly to the moon!
You zoom toward the moon’s bright, glowing face.
“Nicky...” The voice comes from somewhere beneath you.
Who’s calling for me? It’s coming from that fire down below. I should check it out.
You glide back down, your feet landing softly on warm earth.
“Nicky...come closer. “
“Who are you? What do you want? Nicky answered.
“Don’t be afraid, Nicky.”
The voice is deep and velvety seeming to caress your bare skin. You shiver despite the warmth of the flames.
A fry? No, I’m not afraid. I feel.. intrigued. I wonder who’s waiting for me in the shadows...
“Yes...Come to me”.
You step forward, into the flames.
They don’t burn. Somehow I knew they wouldn’t...
“Yes. That’s the way.” The flames swirl up abruptly coalescing before your eyes into the shape of a man. “Nicky..”
No...not a man. A god.
The fire god spreads his arms wide. “Embrace me, Nicky.”
You move back, afraid. You remember the painting in Chris’s house. You remember the book you saw. “Nicky..”
Then the flames disappear reveal...
“Chris?”
“Come to me, Nicky.” Chris answered.
Well, why not? It’s just a dream, right?
You obey and float over to him. As soon as you do, his lips capture yours in a searing kiss, and the fire envelopes him again. Each expert stroke of his tongue stokes the flame of you lust higher.
Oh..
“Yes. Feel me...”Chris answered deeply.
Flames rise up to lick at your body, circling your nipples and delving between your legs.
“Oh!” Nicky squealed.
It isn’t enough. Desire courses through every inch of your body.
“Please...I need more.” Nicky answered deeply.
“I know what you need.” Chris answered.
The flames lick inside you like tongues, circling every part of you. Then, you feel him. His hard member against your entrance.
“Here, Nicky.” Chris whispers deeply.
You gasp as he plunges inside you, his white-hot flesh burning deliciously.
“Yes..” Chris whispers in your ear.
Molten pleasure courses through your body.
“Oh God, I think I’m going to...”Nicky whimpered.
“Go on, Nicky. Come.”. Chris answered.
Climax wracks your body.
“Ah!” Nicky screamed.
“Yes, Nicky...Nicky....”Chris answered.
Gouts of flame engulf you, enveloping your body. You Burt front from the fire wreathed in the brilliant plumage of a Phoenix.
“Oh!” Nicky yelled in excitement.
You surge up out of the darkness into the brilliant blue sky above.
“The sun! I bet I can reach it!” Nicky yelled out.
You careen toward the blazing star, but as soon as you come within reach...
My wings! They’re melting! No!
Your body plummets down, down, down.... until you’re swallowed up by the darkness.

Summary:Halloween masquerade is turning up the heat...is there another ? Denise run off with Tim?
Word count: over 1k
Warning ⚠️: 18+ only
Characters: Dr.Nicky Ransom x Chris Evans , Judith, Denise Ames (cousin), Tim (hot high school teacher) , mystery guest (possibly the twin)?? Pretending to be Chris!???....
Chapter 8:
“Mind if I cut in?” Mystery guest answered.
“Oh”,Nicky answered in shock.
“I’ve been watching you since you arrived, and I have to admit that I’m captivated.” Guest answered.
He’s been...watching me? That’s a little creepy.
“So how about a dance?” Guest answered.
You blink rapidly at the stranger, then turn to Chris. He watching the newcomer with a raised eyebrow.
“Oh...no thanks.” Nicky answered. “I’m a little tired.”
“Come on. Just one little dance?” Guest answered.
“No. No, thank you.” Nicky answered.
“Just one.” Guest answered.
The man steps closer, his polite smile becoming a little more insincere.
He’s not backing off. What should I do?
You step closer to the man with a glare.
“I said no. So back off.” Nicky answered angrily.
The man’s eyes flash angrily, and only then do you smell the alcohol on his breath.
“What’s your deal? I just want a dance.” Guest answered.
Then, he reaches out as if to grab you.
“That’s enough.” Chris answered.
Chris steps between you both, catching the man’s wrist before he can touch you.
“What the hell?” Guest answered. “Ow! Hey, back off, man.”
“No.” Chris answered.
You Chris’s hand tighten on the man’s wrist, making him wince. Then, Chris turns to you, his grip still on the other man’s wrist.
“Nicky,I’m sorry for my rude behavior. I’ll stop if you’d rather dance with man.” Chris answered.
“Hah. Yeah, that’s right.” Guest answered.
“No. I’d much rather be with you, Chris.” Nicky answered.
Chris offers you a small smile. Then, he turns sharp blue eyes back to the man.
“You heard her.” Chris answered. “The lady has made it perfectly clear that she’s to interested. She’s taken, so back off.”
His grip tightens yet again, and the man let’s out a small cry of pain.
“Fine. Fine! Just let go of me. That bitch isn’t worth it.” Guest answered.
“What did you say?” Chris answered.
“Chris...it’s okay.” Nicky answered in shock. “He’s the one who isn’t worth it.”
Chris sighs.
“You’re right. My apologies Nicky.” Chris answered.
Reluctantly, he releases the man.
“Leave. Now. Before I have you removed.” Chris answered.
“Tch. Whatever.” Guest answered.
And with that, the man leaves.
“Are you all right?” Chris answered with concern.
Chris faces you, his eyes shining with concern.
“I’m...fine.” Nicky answered. “That guy was a jerk, but he was harmless.”
“Let’s hope so, anyway.” Chris answered.
“Chris, darling!” Female guest sequels.
Just then, a beautiful woman sweeps up to the two of you.
Now what?
“I just saw the whole thing. Is everything all right? Would you like to have that man evicted from the building?” Female guest answered.
“No, it’s fine, Carla.” Chris answers.
“If you’re sure.” Carla answers.
The woman puts her hand on Chris’s arm and leans close to him.
I guess they know each other.
“Um...who is this?” Nicky answered.
Chris clears his throat.
“Ah, how rude of me.” Chris answered. “Nicky, this is Carla, one of the Dreamseekers Foundation’s most generous donors. Carla, this is Nicky.”
“Oh, I didn’t see you there.” Carla answers.
She gives you a smile that seems almost a little too wide.
“And how do you know each other?” Carla answers.
“Nicky and I are friends.” Chris answered.
“Oh, is that right?” Carla answers in shock.
They both turn to you.
“Chris is...right. We’re friends.” Nicky answered.
“Indeed we are.” Chris answered.
Chris’s smile widens into something open and genuine. He moves closer to you, placing a hand on the small of your back.
“Goodness.” Carla answers in shock. “ oh, I see. You’re “friends.”
She gives a knowing smile and steps back.
“Well, I won’t intrude any longer. I’m glad you’re both all right after that horrible display.” Carla answers.
“Oh. Thank you. “ Nicky answered.
She’s not so bad, I guess.
“Thank you, Carla. And thank you for coming tonight.” Chris answered.
“Anything for you, Chris.” Carla answers with a smile.
She turns to you with a sweeter smile than before.
“It’s was lovely meeting you, Nicky. Hold on to him.”Carla answered.
And, with a smile and a wink, she leaves.
“Well, that was interesting.” Nicky answered.
“Quite a sequence of events.” Chris answered. “Ah, but now I have to leave you.”
“Oh. You do?” Nicky answered sadly.
“I’m on the board, remember? I have to ensure the donors are happy.” Chris answered.
Then, gently, he takes your hand in his, leans down, and kisses your knuckles.
“Thank you for the dance, Nicky. I’ll see you soon.” Chris answered with a smile.
Another guest swoops in after Chris leaves, politely asking you to dance. You accept.
You make polite conversation as you try to subtly keep your eye on Chris.
Where did he get off too?
At one point you think you see him at opposite ends of the ballroom, but you shrug it off.
Chris and I hardly the only people wearing Regency- era costumes.
The song ends, and you’re left on your own.
I think I’ll look for...refreshments.
You head over to the buffet table.
Hmm.. what am I craving?
You bite into a plump, juicy strawberry enrobed in decadent dark chocolate.
Yeah, this place is basically heaven.
But then you find yourself at a loss once more.
I wish I could find-
You feel a light touch at the small of your back.
“There you are.” Chris answered.
He gives you a small kiss on the cheek.
“Chris!” Nicky squealed. “Eck!”
You step away from him, your heart pounding.
“Whoa there.” Nicky answered.
“Did I frighten you?” Chris answered.
You lay a hand over your pounding heart.
“What do you think?” Nicky answered.
“My sincerest apologies. Please. Allow me to make it up to you.” Chris answered
He extends his hand.
“May I have this dance?” Chris answered.
“Of course.” Nicky answered.
He leads you onto the dance floor and sweeps you into a waltz. He steps are quicker than they were before, and find yourself struggling to keep up.
“Chris! Have you forgotten you’re dealing with an extreme novice here?” Nicky answered.
“I’m afraid I did. Forgive me.” Chris answered.
“You’re forgiven, but please slow down before I fall!” Nicky answers.
He slows to a manageable pace, and you’re able to match his steps once more.
“Much better. Thank you.” Nicky answered.
“You’re welcome.” Chris answered.
He smiles, his bright eyes sparkling, his hair falling in his eyes.
Huh. His hair is longer. That’s...weird. Am I remembering wrong?
“You look distracted. Is something the matter?” Chris answered.
“No, it’s just...your hair. Did you style it differently in the past hour?”Nicky answered.
“Ah, all the excitement must have messed it up a little.” Chris answered.
“That must be it.” Nicky answered.
You relax into the waltz, savoring the feel of Chris’s arm at your waist, his hand in yours. A strange sadness comes over you as the song draws to a finish.
I don’t want this to end.
And deep down, you wonder if is has too.
“Chris, I-“ Nicky answers.
He steps away, his eyes glittering with mirth.
“You truly are something special, Nicky.” Chris answered.
Your cheeks warm as he raises your, knuckles to his lips.
“If you’ll excuse me.” Chris answered.
And then he’s gone, leaving you with a faint, nagging sense of wrongness. You don’t , however, have long to dwell on it.
“Nicky! Come on! Time for tequila shots! “Denise yells over.
“Shots? I’m in ! “ Nicky answered with a smile. “Just one, though.”
“Ugh, you are such an adult.” Denise answers with a smile.
“Yeah, that’s what happens when you’re careening toward 30!” Nicky answers.
She grabs your arm and drags you to the bar, where Tim is waiting.
“Nicky! Are you doing shots with us?” Tim answers with a big smile.
“A shot. Singular.” Nicky answered.
“You’re such an adult.” Tim answered.
“That’s what i said! Nicky!, tell him that’s exactly what I said!” Denise answers.
The three of you laugh as the bartender sets salt, lime wedges, and three shots of Patron in front of you. You lick salt from your hand, toss back the shot, and suck the juice from the lime wedge.
Denise cheers.
“Woo! You’re a wild woman, Nicky!” Denise answers.
You laugh, wiping your mouth.
“Don’t get used to it. I’ll be boring and responsible again tomorrow.” Nicky answered.
The merriment carries on well into the night. By the time the ball ends at 3 AM, you’re one of the few guests left.
I haven’t seen much of Chris since our second dance, but I guess it only makes sense that a trustee would have to work the room.
You sink into a chair next to Judith near the lobby, stifling a yawn.
“Man, when you guys throw a party, you go hard. I haven’t stayed up this late since grad school” Nicky answered.
“We hold this ball every year, and I feel like sleeping for a week after each and every one!” Judith answered. “Worth it, though.”
“No kidding. I’m exhausted, but this is the most fun I’ve had in ages.” Nicky answered.
Judith glances around the emptying ballroom.
“Where did Denise get to?” Judith answers.
“She left a couple hours ago. With Tim.” Nicky answers.
Judith laughs.
“You little scamp!” Judith answers. “Oh, but Tim drove you here! You’ve lost your ride!”
“Honestly...I’m completely cool with that.” Nicky answered. “All the cab fare in the world couldn’t make me regret the way this night played out! I can’t believe how well they hit it off.”
“I noticed! I don’t think they left each other’s side all night.” Judith answered. “And Tim does seem like such a nice boy.”
She squeezes your hand.
“It’s good of you to look out for Denise the way you do.” Judith answered.
“Denise and I are all the family we have left. She means the world to me.” Nicky answered.
“She’s lucky to have you, honey.” Judith answered.
“And you. And Chris.” Nicky answered.
“We do make a good team, don’t we?” Judith answers.
“The best.” Nicky answered smiling.
Chris approaches you through the dwindling crowd, rolling his shoulders stiffly.
“Ladies.” Chris answered.
“You look dog tired.” Judith answered.
“I am, but wealthy donors aren’t going to butter themselves up.” Chris answered.
He smiles at you.
“I confess, Nicky, I didn’t expect to still see you here at this hour.”Chris answered.
“I might have tapped out sooner, but my cousin seems to have absconded with my ride.” Nicky answered.
Judith pipes up immediately.
“You two could share a cab! You’re headed to the same side of town. Why don’t you go flag one down, Chris?” Judith answered. “My Uber is about five minutes away, so I’m headed out soon, too.”
Chris blinks. Then he laughs.
“How do you adjust to new technology so much faster than I do?” Chris answered with a smile.
“Grit and determination. Now shoo!” Judith answered.
“Yes, ma’am. At once.” Chris answered.
Chris heads outside and you shoot Judith a sidelong look.
“That was...masterful.” Nicky answered.”You truly are an artist.”
“I like to think so.” Judith answered.
Then she sobers.
“You know, I wasn’t completely honest with you before when I told you Chris was a trustee of the Dreamseekers Foundation.” Judith answered. “The truth is, he founded it. From the ground up.”
“Seriously?” Nicky answered.
Judith nods.
“It was a passion project. Well, is a passion project.” Judith answered.
Wow. That must have been...hard.
“ I can’t imagine how much work must’ve gone into building this entire charity from scratch!” Nicky answers.”He must be super invested in the arts.”
“He is. I don’t think there’s anything he’s prouder of than his charity work.” Judith answered.
She sighs.
“Unfortunately, he doesn’t let himself have much of a life outside of it. Sometimes I worry that I’m the closest friend he has.” Judith answered.
“Why is that, do you think ?” Nicky answered.
“He has hard time opening up to people, and it makes home lonely.” Judith answers. “But you...you’re different. I’ve never seen him take to someone so quickly. I think you might just be the special woman who can get past his defenses.”
“Judith...that’s a a lot of pressure to put on me.” Nicky answers. “I barely know Chris. I certainly don’t know whether I can do...whatever is that he needs.”
“All I’m asking is for you to give me a chance.” Judith answers. “Can you, Nicky? Give him a chance? He’s a good man. He deserves so much more than he thinks he does.”
“I... would like to give Chris a chance.” Nicky answered.
“ I’m glad to hear that,Nicky!” Judith answered.
“Yeah.” Nicky answered. “I mean, after we get to know each other. Sometimes he still feels a little bit like a stranger to me.”
“How so?” Judith answered.
You think to your last dance with Chris with a frown.
“I don’t know. He just. Does.” Nicky answered. “But...I like him a lot, and I-I would like to give him a chance.”
Judith smiles and lays a hand on your shoulder.
“You’re a good person, Nicky.” Judith answers with a smile. “And I’m rooting for you kids.”
“Judith-“ Nicky answered surprised.
“One taxi at your service,Dr. Ransom! Judith, I believe your driver is out there, too.”Chris answered.
How much of our conversation did he overhear?
Judith glances at her phone.
“So he is!” Judith answered.
The three of you exit the Barbary Towers Hotel and say your goodbyes as the cars idle at the curb.
You give a casual wave of your hand to say goodbye.
“Have a safe drive, Nicky.” Judith answers.
Judith ducks into the Uber, and you and Chris climb into the taxi.
“Where to?” Cab driver answered.
After determining between you that Chris’s house is closer, he gives the driver his address, and you’re on your way.
“I’m glad I came tonight. I’m totally wiped, but I can’t remember the last time I had so much fun.” Nicky answered.
“I’m glad you came, too. And I’m sorry we weren’t able to spend more time together.” Chris answers.
“It’s all right. Duty called.” Nicky answered.
A huge yawn escapes before you can say any more.
“Excuse me.” Nicky answered blushing.
“Why don’t you try to get a nap in? It’s a good half hour to my house from here. I’ll wake you when we get there.” Chris answers.
Oh my God, nap sounds amazing right now. And Chris’s shoulder looks so warm and comfortable.
You snuggle into Chris’s side, resting your head on his shoulder.
“Comfortable?” Chris answers.
“Mmmmhmm...” Nicky answered.
He wraps his arm around you, enveloping you in his warmth.
Safe. This is what being safe feels like.
And as Chris lays his cheek against your hair, you think it’s a feeling you could get used to.
“Sleep, Nicky. I’ll wake you when we’re near.” Chris answered.
“Okay.” Nicky answered.
You nod off, lulled to sleep by the steady motion of the car and the comfort of Chris’s presence. You’re awakened a short time later by Chris calling you name shortly.
“Nicky? Nicky, it’s time to wake up.” Chris answered softly.
You blink groggily, lifting your head from his shoulder.
“We’re here.” Chris answered.
The cab is parked outside the wrought- iron gate of the magnificent Neoclassical mansion. Recognition hits you like a bolt of lightning. Chris pays the driver and slides out of the car. Then he hesitates.
“Nicky...would you like to come in?” Chris answered.
